From behind Bars
is a fanfic based off of Disney's The Lion King (1994). It was written by ArizonaSivy.
The premise of the story is that Scar and Mufasa are captured and sent to a zoo under the mistake that they're nomadic. The two brothers must adjust to their new life while hoping to find their way back to the Pridelands.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Alternate Universe Fic: Prior to Mufasa's death, both Mufasa and Scar are captured by humans and sent to a zoo.
- Disappeared Dad: After his youngest cub Mheetu died, Scar distanced himself from his daughter Nala. He doesn't even like to think of her as his daughter.
- Hollywood Atheist: Most animals believe that you become a star upon dying. Scar is one of the few exceptions. The death of his son turned him bitter and atheistic. He believes that when you die, that's it.
- Kissing Cousins: Scar is Nala's father, making Simba and Nala first cousins. The two are betrothed to one another.
- Mating Season Mayhem: The zookeepers introduce a female in heat to Mufasa and Scar in hopes that they'll have cubs. This annoys Mufasa because he has difficulties staying faithful to his mate Sarabi, who is still back home in Africa.
- Oh, My Gods!: The characters use the Great Kings in this manner.Mufasa: What, in the name of the Great Kings, happened?
- Related in the Adaptation: Scar is Nala and Mheetu's father.
- Royal Inbreeding: Nala and Simba are royal first cousins who are in an Arranged Marriage.
- Sapient Eat Sapient:
- After escaping their enclosure, Scar and Mufasa head over to the zebra exhibit first to eat a member of the group who insulted them behind their backs previously. Later, recapping the night's events, the zoo staff list several other animals eaten, including a flock of ducks.
- Angry at being lied to, Mufasa barely misses biting Moses in half.
- Lalia is a captive-bred lion who has never hunted before. One day, the zookeepers put a live sheep into her enclosure. Laila reluctantly attacks the sheep. She feels bad about killing it and almost lets it go, but she kills it after it calls her a "mockery of a feline". She still feels bad afterwards.
- Scavengers Are Scum: Scar hates being lowered to the point where he eats carrion (that is, the meat that humans give them). He thinks that scavenging is beneath him.
- Son of an Ape: Scar derides humans as "hairless monkeys".
- Stars Are Souls: Most animals believe that you become a star upon dying.
