Voiced by: Toshiko Fujita (JP), Susan Silo (EN), Valle Acebrón (SP), Joana Brito (LA)

Spell Specialization: Explosions

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zofis.png

A male 14-year-old Mamodo with an androgynous and doll-like appearance, and the first major villain that Zatch faced. He possesses the natural ability to manipulate others’ hearts, and began the battle by turning his partner Koko from selfless and kind to as malicious and ruthless as he. He revived the Ancient Mamodos and brought them under his control in an attempt to become king. Though an imperial sort who would prefer leaving the fighting to others, his ability to fly, genius intellect, and Explosion-based spells make him no pushover if he must dirty his own hands.

  • Arc Villain: Zofis is the main villain of the Ancient Mamodo arc, which concludes with his defeat.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Sherry and Brago. Sherry absolutely despises Zofis for manipulating Koko and refuses to allow anyone else to take him out. And, despite his attempt to kill Sherry when they first met, Zofis actively avoids a confrontation with them, because Brago absolutely terrifies him.
  • Bad Boss: All of his minions, and even Koko, are just tools for him to become king.
  • Big Eater: All Mamodo have big appetite, but in Zofis' case, he prefers huge feasts fit for a king, which mirrors his personality and ambitions. Also, unlike other Mamodo such as Zatch or Brago, Zofis doesn't scarf down his meals like an animal. Quite the opposite, as shown in ep.69.
  • Combat Pragmatist: At one point he announces his arrival by blasting another demon's book before they even knew he was there.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He points out to Sherry that she can't kill him, because then he couldn't erase Koko's memories, meaning she has no choice but to send him back to the Mamodo world. Brago points out that once he gets back, there's nothing stopping Brago from coming after him.
  • Dirty Coward: Hides behind his army of Thousand-Year-Old mamodo, who he keeps in line with the empty threat of returning to stone. When Brago finally confronts him, he spends most of the battle running away, and when he's finally taken down, he's a teary mess.
  • Effeminate Voice: His makeup and dress already make him effeminate enough, but the fact that he's voiced by women in all languages make it really impossible to tell he's male without looking into his pronouns.
  • Evil Sorcerer: Unlike most Mamodo, Zofis has powers that go far beyond his book spells. He can manipulate minds and hearts through hypnosis, extract memories with remarkable precision, and fly unaided.
  • Expy: His look, personality, and even his attacks are very reminiscent of Freeza from Dragon Ball, and in the dub's case he even sounds like Freeza's old dub voice note .
  • Failed a Spot Check: Subverted. Zofis, despite his strong perceptive abilities, somehow completely missed that Brago had intercepted the spell Zofis had shot at Sherry when they first met. Brago flat-out refuses to believe this and comes to the conclusion the Zofis had indeed noticed him and fled out of fear. Zofis' Tears of Fear are all the confirmation he needs.
  • Fangs Are Evil: He has a mouth full of fangs that he shows off when he's making the point of how evil he is.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He usually speaks in a calm, polite tone, even when trying to kill the heroes.
  • Femme Fatalons: He's an utterly evil Sissy Villain with long, red nails.
  • Having a Blast: His powers are centered around explosions.
  • Hellish Pupils: His eyes turn yellow/red with slitted pupils when he's being particularly evil.
  • Hypnotize the Captive: Because Koko refused to be Zofis' partner, he used his power to corrupt her mind and heart so she would enjoy doing evil with him. Sherry is determined to defeat Zofis and free Koko from his control.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: There are hints that he felt inferior back in the mamodo world, but as the Big Bad, he styles himself like the king he intends to be.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The series takes a notably darker turn during his arc, and he's one of the first villains to have absolutely nothing funny about him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Literally; he has the power to manipulate the hearts and mind of humans and Mamodos alike. Even when he has to use mundane methods like against Sherry, he displays a thorough understanding of how to mentally break people.
  • Sissy Villain: His face, lipstick, colored fingernails, dress, and even his voice (to an extent) are all extremely effeminate, which somehow makes him even creepier.
  • Smug Snake: He actually is incredibly powerful and can do things such as fly, teleport, and mentally dominate others without the use of his book. But when faced with someone he knows is his equal or superior, he isn't as smug.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: His ultimate goal is to become king of the Mamodo world and rule with an iron fist. He fails.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He starts losing his composure when Brago and Sherry enter the conflict. Them singlehandedly defeating his army, Brago's spell actually hitting him, and Sherry becoming immune to his manipulations all push him farther into breaking down. By the time Brago threatens to hunt him down in the demon world, he's reduced to a sobbing wreck.

    Koko

Voiced by: Chinami Nishimura (JP), Lara Jill Miller (EN), Elena Palacios (SP), Xóchitl Ugarte (LA)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/koko_gbgm_5.png

An 18-year-old French woman who grew up in poverty. Kind and outgoing, she intended to seize her future with her own hands by attending a university. Shortly after she was accepted, Zofis came into her life and, after she refused to help him, brainwashed her into a cold and malicious individual.

  • Affably Evil: She rarely loses her cute, smiling demeanor even when she's being evil.
  • Bloodbath Villain Origin: After Zofis corrupted her, Koko's first act of evil was to burn her entire hometown and everyone in it to the ground.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Zofis used his mind controlling powers to brainwash Koko and transform her into a sadistic person who enjoys doing evil with him.
  • Childhood Friends: She has been Sherry's Only Friend since childhood.
  • Cuddle Bug: A villainous example: Koko sure likes to hug Zofis from behind. But the fact that she's brainwashed the whole time makes it all look very creepy and squicky.
  • Damsel in Distress: She was kidnapped and brainwashed by Zofis. Sherry's main goal for joining the Mamodo Battle is to rescue Koko from Zofis' control.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Because they were poor, her family was forced to steal in order to gain the little food and comfort they had, and Koko herself was labeled as a thief because of it, even though she was innocent. Realizing that she would never be worthy in their eyes, Koko chose not to give in to despair and focus all of her energy into her work and studying for school. Unfortunately, Zofis forced her to become his partner and corrupted her mind to make her as sadistic as he is.
  • Interclass Friendship: With Sherry. Koko is a poor girl and Sherry is a rich girl, but they have been best friends ever since they can remember.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Zofis removes all memories of her actions while evil. He refuses to do so until Brago tells him that if he doesn't, he will personally make Zofis's life in the demon world a living hell.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Sherry. Koko was Sherry's Only Friend and sole emotional support for most of her life. When her mother's cruel abuse pushed her to the point of suicide, Koko was the one who saved Sherry and motivated her to live on.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Under Zofis' influence, her eyes are blank and inexpressive, a sign that she really is brainwashed and not simply acting on her repressed desires like Zofis claims.
  • Morality Pet: Sherry's friendship with Koko and devotion to freeing her from Zofis are the first indications of her softer side before she starts defrosting.
  • More than Mind Control: Zofis attempts to convince Sherry it's this. It almost works. Zofis also attempts to invoke this: unlike other people whose minds Zofis simply controlled, Zofis created an entirely different personality out of the dark feelings in Koko's heart so that she would be his bookkeeper. Zofis restores her heart to normal after he gets beaten.
  • Put on a Bus: Despite her being Sherry's initial reason for fighting, she totally disappears after Zofis is sent back. Justified, in that she goes off to college and Sherry wouldn't want to remind her of the battle anyway.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Koko, under Zofis' control, tries to break Sherry's spirit by revealing that she actually hates Sherry and is a truly evil person all on her own. In the end, this really is all a trick of Zofis's, and Koko really is the good friend Sherry remembered her being.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Her earrings are styled after some rings she made for Sherry that were supposed to serve as talismans to ward off evil. When Sherry realizes this, that's her proof that the real Koko under Zofis' brainwashing is calling for help.

Zeno and Dufort

    Zeno/Zeon

Voiced by: Urara Takano (JP), Debi Derryberry (EN), Sara Vivas (SP), Gaby Ugarte (LA)

Spell Specialization: Lightning

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0zeon_29.png
A male 6-year-old humanoid Mamodo and a warped doppelganger of Gash's, even having lightning spells of his own, he was responsible for stealing Zatch's memories. He is later revealed to be one of the four prodigies with the moniker 'Thunder Emperor'.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the manga, Zeon does start out rather dickish but as the battle goes on we start to see he does have a noble side and that his actions were purely driven by jealously which he eventually overcomes once he sees Zatch's past. In the anime, no such development exists, he's evil through and through and has nothing but contempt for Zatch to the bitter end, even when he's beaten. This was because the author had broken his hand as he was in the midst of the story arc and the anime rapidly caught up before he could do the battle between Zatch and Zeno. So the animation staff just had to go with anything and just ran with what they had.
  • All-Encompassing Mantle: Zeno's clothes are theoretically exactly the same as Zatch's (albeit a different color), but his always seems to be billowing ominously while Zatch's generally just hangs down loosely like a dress.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Zatch. He's responsible for Zatch's amnesia and his burning hatred of Zatch is his motivation for most of the tournament.
  • Big Bad: For the last half of the Faudo arc, and for most of the series seeing as he's the one who removed Zatch's memories.
  • Blood Knight: Zeno is very ruthless and it was something he inherited from his father. This reason is exactly why King Bell gave Bao to Zatch. Bao consumed so much darkness, the spell became dangerous and Zeno, possessing his father's wrath, would've been consumed by it. Contrast this to Zatch, who not only manage to resist it, but purify Bao.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Zatch's Abel, though they get better.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: His spell selection is similar to Gash's, meaning his feats of extreme strength and speed come from pure physical training.
  • The Dreaded: He's feared as "Thunder Emperor Zeno" due to the Training from Hell that puts him at a far higher level than most mamodo children and being the son of the current king. Riou, who is no slouch himself, is trembling when they come face-to-face.
  • Elemental Weapon: Unique to Zeno is the spell Sorudo Zakeruga, a giant blade made of lightning.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Even at his worst, Zeno genuinely cares about Dufort. The feeling is mutual, as Zeno is probably the only living thing that Dufort cares about at all.
  • Flash Step: Spams this, often to get behind opponents.
  • Freudian Excuse: His grudge against Zatch? He believed that, since Zatch got the incredible power of Bao, and he himself had to go through Training from Hell, that his parents favored Zatch. His Heel Realization hits when he realizes Zatch's bad past yet never wavered from his kind self while also learning Zatch was given Bao to protect Zeno from it.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Part of what drives him. He feels driven to surpass Zatch's Bao Zakeruga with his own power, born from his Training from Hell. If he can do so, he'll prove to himself that the suffering of said training was actually worth something. He actually is stronger than Zatch during their fight, but he loses because Zatch matches his and Dufort's suffering and the power coming from it with the care from his friends, empowering Bao.
  • The Heavy: His actions kickstart the plot, and he's the driving force behind the second major arc of the series.
  • Ignored Epiphany: He sees fragments of Zatch's memories, revealing bits of Zatch's past along with the horrific might of Bao. He seemingly shrugs it off though he eventually realizes he was in the wrong. Furthermore, he confessed that if he did win, he would've destroyed Zatch's book to prevent Bao from consuming him.
  • Kick the Dog: Beating Rops was all part of the competition, but he rubs it in by having Dufort Zeker the already burning book, destroying it instantly so Rops doesn't have the chance to give his bookkeeper a farewell.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Starts undergoing one when he catches a glimpse of Zatch's memories and seeing the corrupted form of Bao. Finally hits it when defeated and sees Zatch's unpleasant past. Sums it up as such: "Forgive me, Zatch. Your brother has been a fool."
  • Pet the Dog: Seeing Rodeaux being willing to risk his life to attack him, Zeon tanks the hit rather than dodge it.
  • The Power of Hate: His suffering along with the hate from Dufort resulted in his ultimate spell. He and Dufort were released from it when Bao ate the spell.
  • Shock and Awe: Just like Zatch, although he's far more competent with it.
  • Slasher Smile: He's very prone to making crazy grins.
  • Smug Super: Fond of using only the bare minimum of force to counter his enemies' spells. This still comes off as him showing off though, since he's beating them with spells that ought to be much weaker than theirs.
  • Tyke Bomb: Trained from when he was three to be a candidate for king.
  • When He Smiles: During the last clash between his ultimate spell and Bao Zakeruga, he witnesses Dufort shedding tears from Zatch taking in his hatred and suffering... and cracks the first genuine, warm smile in the series from his debut up to that point.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His white hair is infamous among the other children, along with his ruthlessness and malevolence.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: Of Baou Zakeruga. Not until he sees Zatch and Kiyo nearly devoured by its power, he doesn't.

    Dufort/Dufaux

Voiced by: Hikaru Midorikawa (JP), Dave Wittenberg (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0dufort.png

Zeno's partner, a mysterious, quiet young man of unknown ethnicity. His stoic demeanor hides incredible intellect and intense hatred.

  • Admiring the Abomination: He admits that Faudo's power fascinates him, and that he doesn't really care about the collateral damage as long as he gets to see it in action.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Given his Answer Talker power, asking him how he knows something causes him to respond with derision.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: His Answer Talker ability; anything he can observe, he can answer any question about as fast as blinking.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: He considers the lives of human beings to have no more importance than the lives of flies. Since no one cares if a fly dies, he figures it doesn't matter if people die. He admits that most people would probably disagree with his assessment. He ends up moving past this, first as a favor to Zeno and later the experience in his travels being shown gratitude moves him.
  • Death-Activated Superpower: Implied. He states that the Answer Talker comes from dying then coming back to life.
  • Death Seeker: He's enough of one that Zeno's parting words to him are a demand that he live on and not just throw his life away because living is too troublesome. Dufort later gives his reason for living being him keeping a promise to friend, indicating this wasn't an unnecessary gesture either.
  • Freudian Excuse: Dufort was raised in a lab environment from childhood, treated cruelly and anyone kind to him was removed. After years of torment and testing, he was given one final battery of tests that opened the path to his release, all while taunted by the scientist who had ruled his life. Turns out that A) His Answer Talker was being used for military application, B) He was being released into the Arctic to die rather than being freed, and, oh, C) His mother sold him for ten thousand dollars. Teaming up with Zeno doesn't seem so far-fetched, considering...
  • Heel–Face Turn: After traveling the world for a little while after Zeno's defeat, he chooses to come back to help Zatch and co. defeat Clear. By using his Answer Talker abilities, he is able to coach each one in what they need to do to get stronger during the 10 month period that Clear was recovering from their previous battle.
  • Humanizing Tears: When Zatch through Bao takes in his hatred and suffering, crying for him, it ends up making him tear up at the first real sign of compassion. After curing a child in an African village and being showered in gratitude, the display of positive emotion and care moves him deeply, causing him to cry again.
  • Mentor Archetype: During the Clear Note arc, he helps the remaining Main Characters bring out their greatest potential via his use of the Answer Talker. He also trains Kiyomaro to stabilize his own Answer Talker ability so that he can use it on demand.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: Implied during his fight with Apollo, and later confirmed when he and Kiyo finally meet. Kiyo attempts to appeal to him to stop Faudo, but Dufort shrugs it off, rather bluntly saying that he sees no value whatsoever in human life.
  • Nerves of Steel: He jumps off a pillar at least three stories tall without flinching, confident Zeno will catch him.
  • No Social Skills: He's very bad at even carrying on a conversation. Justified, seeing as the only human interaction he's had was through a computer screen.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: With Kiyo Takamine, in the Anime when he mind scans the former commenting about his years of jealousy-fueled neglect received both from his peers and his teachers in life, comparing it to his own harsh lab rat days in the asylum he'd been incarcerated in.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • Was angered so much when Apollo asked how much hatred he was hiding to the point where he attempted to finish him and Rops off with Zeno's ultimate spell, until Zeno convinced him otherwise.
    • Is moved to tears when he sees Zatch taking in his suffering to free him from it.
    • He ends up in tears again when the family who's child he cures shows him gratitude. The emotional experience moves him deeply and being shown genuine care makes him weep once more.
  • The Power of Hate: His Answer Talker ability was honed through pure hatred. It's implied his immense amount of heart power comes from this hatred as well. He loses this thanks to Zatch and Bao.
  • Psychic Powers: In the anime, Dufort had vast psychic powers for which he was poked and prodded within an undisclosed facility for most of his life.
  • Shadow Archetype: Dufort is exactly the kind of person that Kiyo would have become had it not been for Zatch. Dufort's nihilism and misanthropy is a darker reflection of Kiyo's Bystander Syndrome and hatred of others before his character development. Dufort's hatred-fueled Answer Talker ability is also a mirror to Kiyo's genius level intellect. And Zeno's influence on him is the polar opposite of Zatch's influence on Kiyo. The anime is a lot more direct about this.
  • Skewed Priorities. He cures a child's fatal disease because the boy's family's wailing was keeping him from getting any sleep.
  • The Stoic: He's rarely seen with so much as a twitch.
  • Super-Intelligence: Dufort possesses a psychic ability known as "Answer Talker", which allows the user to immediately know the answer to any question. This lets him instantly calculate the best winning strategy for any situation.
  • Villainous Friendship: He and Zeno are as close, if not closer, than Zatch and Kiyo. Dufort goes so far as to call Zeno his brother in one of the only genuine displays of warmth he ever shows.
  • Walking the Earth: After Zeno's gone, he decides to wander and look for a new purpose.

    Leo/Riou & Banikis Gigo

Leo is voiced by: Keiko Yamamoto (JP)

Banikis Gigo is voiced by: Satoshi Taki (JP)

Spell Specialization: Beasts

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cha_riou.png

A male Mamodo adolescent resembling a cross between a lion and a centaur, and the second major villain that Zatch faced. Ruthless in his determination to become king, Riou sought to use Faudo to overcome all other demons. His magic shapes his energy into beasts.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: It kills him to say it, but he virtually begs Kiyo to fix his tampering with Faudo's systems. Kiyo is having none of it.
  • Animal Motif: Lions. His spells also have a beast theme.
  • Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: He (tries to) kill Kiyo but is content with burning Zatch's book.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Faudo Arc. At least at first.
  • Arch-Enemy: Comes to view Kiyo as his main enemy out of everyone opposing him. Kiyo in particular draws his ire for successfully outsmarting Leo at every turn and sufficiently tampering with Faudo's system to prevent Leo from using the giant demon the way he intended.
  • Cast from Hit Points: His curse hurts him just as much as it hurts the victims.
  • Clown Car: His partner Banikis is inside the mouth on his chest.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: His final spell turns him into a giant berserk beast, which he avoids using because he can't distinguish friend from foe in the form and is therefore a danger to his bookkeeper. He's still no match for Zeno.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Banikis, in the manga, mostly at Riou's expense.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Having been beaten by Zeno, Leo gloats to him that his goal to take over Faudo is a futile one, as he's armed a failsafe device that will send Faudo back to the Mamodo World. Zeno simply smirks and says he'll just wreck the device then, visibly horrifying Leo - he'd intended to use Faudo to win the tournament, not destroy the world, which leaving him in the human realm would inevitably do. Not that he's in any position to argue, as Zeno immediately sends him back.
  • Evil Is Petty: He sets Faudo to attack Japan, even knowing he has barely enough time to do so before Faudo is sent back to the demon world, just to spite Kiyo.
  • For the Evulz: He attacks Kiyo with repeated small spells rather than hitting him with a big one and killing him instantly, because he wanted to make Kiyo suffer.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Kiyo, temporarily.
  • Hijacked by Ganon Mid-way through the Faudo Arc, Zeno takes over and sends Riou back to the mamodo world
  • Unstoppable Rage: Aforementioned final spell.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: We find out in flashback that everything he did was due to the pressure of representing his family in the tournament, and he was seriously conflicted about some of the things he did.
  • Worf Effect: Defeats Zatch and Kiyo, then is beaten by Zeno to show how dangerous the latter is.

Clear Note and Vino

    Clear Note

Spell Specialization: Annihilation

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clear_note.png

Clear Note is a male humanoid Mamodo adolescent, and the final major villain that Zatch faced. Ruthlessly powerful, he aspired to use the power he would claim as king to kill every demon in existence. He boasts the ability of Annihilation, which allows him to completely nullify all spells and creates pockets of Negative Space Wedgie where he chooses.

  • Adapted Out: He and Vino don't appear in the anime.
  • Anti-Magic: The Supurifo spell family has the ability to completely negate a spell's effect within a given area.
  • Arc Villain: He's the villain of the last arc.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: An Omnicidal Maniac with the power of annhiliation. It's eventually revealed his desire to destroy comes from having those powers. When Shin Clear Seunousu's core is destroyed, Clear is reborn without any of his villainous traits.
  • BFG: The Zarefedōra spell creates a gigantic artillery cannon which doubles as a projectile.
  • Bishōnen Line: Played straight with first, then averted with his One-Winged Angel form.
  • Blood Knight: He likes to fight, expressing satisfaction when Zatch manages to challenge him and lamenting that his rivalry with Ashuron is ending. That he doesn't feel this way during the second battle against him is the first sign that his personality is almost fully overwritten by Shin Kuria.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: At the final battle, everyone acknowledges that Vino appears to be under Clear's control. Whether he was always like that is unclear, but it's worth noting that he goes back to being a regular baby once Clear is defeated. Brago also notes that Clear himself may be subject to this, his personality slowly being warped and destroyed by his own spell, the Shin Kuria.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He's not above using his enemies as human shields and though he admits it's a little lame he's fully willing to simply dodge Ashuron's final all or nothing attack.
  • Creepy Child: All Mamodo are children, but Clear Note looks the most human of them all. That's not even getting to the effect he has on Vino, which makes him one, too, as he has a dull dead-eyed look.
  • Dem Bones: The Bādorerugo spell conjures a giant, white, winged doll, which looks like a dragon skeleton.
  • Diabolus ex Nihilo: Clear gets not a single mention prior to the arc where he's front and center, and promptly shows up to wreak havoc, establishing himself as the strongest demon in the series yet and the final antagonist, with the ultimate goal of erasing all demons from existence - himself included. None of the other demons seem to know anything about him, and no mention is made of his past or reason for being outside of that he is "the power to destroy". Little is said about Vino either, the talking human infant that is his bookmaster.
  • Evilutionary Biologist: He claims his existence and intentions to be the natural result of Mamodo evolution.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: He's an extremist nihilist whose goals are the destruction of the human and Mamodo worlds and then suicide. He's also never so much as mentioned prior to his arc.
  • Invincible Villain: His first appearance; he hands Brago his first and only non-friendly defeat, destroys the full-power Baou Zakeruga, and nobody but Ashuron is able to lay so much as a finger on him (Brago pitched in at one critical moment, but only because Vino was out of energy). Interestingly enough, the fights with his various powered-up forms are much more even thanks to the heroes also getting much stronger.
  • Killing Intent: His murderous intent manifests as a malevolent, demonic aura. It is so potent, he was able to scare both Brago and Sherry.
  • Lack of Empathy: Using Answer Talker, Dufaux in the Gash Cafe identifies Clear as someone who was born without the concept of love, utterly incapable of understanding it now or in the future. Clear only grasps through secondhand knowledge that the reason people don't destroy things is because they love them - Clear himself feels zero qualms about eradicating all demons because he can't comprehend shared positive emotions with anyone else besides himself.
  • Light Is Not Good: Pure white, and pure evil.
  • No-Sell: The Supurifo spell family, as mentioned above. Unlike other defensive spells, they don't stop attacks as much as they directly cancel their effects or make them disappear.
  • Meaningful Name: The name "Clear Note" can refer to his spellbook being a clear note(book), reflecting his complete lack of humanity and empathy, as well as the clarity of his intent, which is free of emotional attachment. "Clear" can also refer to "nuclear" as in nuclear weapons, which he compares himself to. His most powerful spell appropriately has his name in it, being called Shin Kuria(Clear) Seunousu.
  • Nonanswer: After being asked why he's going to kill all the Mamodo, he replies that he wants to kill all the Mamodo. Though he elaborates more, his reason still boil down to him thinking his purpose in life is to kill.
  • Nonstandard Character Design: Though the Mamodo in general have highly varied designs, Clear sticks out for his highly humanoid appearance - being virtually indistinguishable from a human teenager, and dressing the part too. This only serves to emphasize his nature as an eerie, unsettling force, even amongst demons.
  • Noodle Incident: How did Clear get a baby as a bookkeeper is anyone's guess. We don't know what happened to Vino's parents either.
  • One-Winged Angel: Ends up with two such forms, each giving him an ungodly amount of power.
  • Outside-Context Problem: A supremely powerful demon of unknown origin who shows up near the very end of the series, with the stated goal of not just winning the Mamodo battle, but eradicating the entire Demon World. For whatever reason, not even Zeno or any of the Bells were aware of his existence until he actually made himself known.
  • Parental Abandonment: States in the Gash Cafe that he never knew his parents, though whether he killed them or whether they simply left him, he's not sure.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He compares himself to a nuke.
  • Physical God: His final form ends up this way.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: We never find out anything about Vino, the baby who wields Clear Note's spellbook.
  • Pure Is Not Good: It's implied that the reason he's so powerful is that his bookkeeper is a baby and can thus supply completely "pure" heart energy.
  • Recursive Ammo: Bādorerugo can shoot its hands which separate into smaller parts. Every tiny part contains the Annihilation effect of the Radisu spell family.
  • Reincarnation: Baou's ability to erase evil appears to mean this for him. When Clear got ripped apart by Baou, it stripped him of his old memories and personality, and even his appearance, bringing him back as a ditzy young child named White.
  • The Rival: He considers Ashuron this. To the extent that even after being controlled by Shin Kuria, he still recognizes one of Ashuron's spells, to the dragon's surprise.
  • Sensor Character: His ability to sense other demons is unsurpassed as his range goes up to 5,000 km.
  • Shadow Archetype: He is considered one to Zatch. Both of their strongest spells are revealed to have sentience. The main difference is that Zatch was able to overcome the corruption of Baou and even pacify it. Clear Note fell pray to his own power and is being used as a puppet by his most powerful spell. He is basically the kind of person Zatch could’ve become if he were consumed by Baou.
  • So Last Season: Does this to his predecessors as Big Bad by virtue of his methods: he kills his opponents. As nasty as they were, even Zeno and Zofis were simply content to send them back, but not Clear.
  • The Sociopath: The Gash Cafe special implies that Clear is simply incapable of feeling ordinary emotions, and can only derive pleasure from destroying things.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: An aversion. Clear is implied to have gotten stronger between his bouts with Ashuron and explicitly takes the time while recovering from Ashuron's attack to further empower himself.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: His current looks, goal and power level comes from him being controlled by his own spell, Shin Clear Seunousu.
  • The Worf Effect: Delivers Brago the only one of these he ever gets. Brago, after training, returns the favor to his first One-Winged Angel form.

    Vino
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vino_gb.png

Clear Note's human partner, a baby with unthinkable amounts of heart power.

  • Brainy Baby: Vino seems to be pretty smart for baby, considering that babies normally can't read or talk in complete sentences like older kids. It's hard to tell if this is because of Clear's influence or what, though it's implied he's this because of Clear.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: Vino has a large amount of heart power. We can guess this is probably why Clear chose him to be his bookkeeper.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reycom.png

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo and the first (second in the anime) enemy that Zatch faced in the battle. His cool, quiet, and laid-back to the point of fault demeanor hides a malicious core that thrives on abuse and wickedness to become stronger.

  • Blue Means Cold: He has blue hair and his outfit consists of a dark blue shirt with white patches that give the blue a cross design on the front and back and a large silver snowflake in the center of the shirt. His spells allow him to shoot ice out of his mouth.
  • Evil Counterpart: His relationship with Hosokawa is a negative contrast to Zatch and Kiyo's early relationship with each other. Kiyo tends to think of Zatch as an annoyance, but still tries to look out for him. Hosokawa thinks Reycom's the best thing that ever happened to him, but still treats him like dirt. And while Zatch is working to make Kiyo a better person, Reycom encourages Hosokawa's descent into villainy to make himself more powerful. On a related note, Reycom's book is blue to Zatch's red.
  • An Ice Person: Reycom's basic spell, Gikor, shoots massive icicles out of his mouth. His second spell, Freezudo, freezes things in ice.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Almost literally. Reycom's book is burned because Hosokawa sought out Zatch to steal his book and use him as well, something Reycom knows is impossible but apparently never mentioned.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears for a few chapters in the manga, around two episodes in the anime, and is never seen again after his book is burned (except for a cameo in one of the last chapters). However, his actions establish a great deal of the Mamodo Battle and how it works. Kiyo and Zatch had no idea there were more kids like Zatch until confronted by Reycom and Hosokawa in the manga, and it's through fighting them that they learn spellbooks only work for one person, and the Mamodo disappears when their book is burned. The fight also marks the first use of the second spell, Rashield, and when Zatch realizes that the magic is coming from him, as before he thought it was Kiyo's tricks and strategies.
  • Starter Villain: He only knows two spells, freely admits he and Hosokawa are only using each other, doesn't work with him at all and is unrelated to any future characters or story arcs. Reycom and Hosokawa are the only team to attack Zatch for reasons other than to burn his book and become king. But they are the first team Zatch and Kiyo defeat on their path to make Zatch king — even if, at this point, they don't know it yet.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0hosokawa.png

Reycom's human partner. He's a middle-aged man who went mad with power when he discovered Reycom's abilities, using him to do whatever he wanted while treating him as no more than a tool. He never learned, nor did Reycom tell him, of the demon battle and what he was.

  • Adaptation Deviation: In the manga, Hosokawa learns about Zatch when he and Kiyo foil some bank robbers. In the anime adaptation, he is the bank robber.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Hosokawa has no idea what Mamodo are, or of the contest to become king. He didn't even know there were other kids like Reycom until he reads about Zatch in the newspaper — or when he and Kiyo thwart his bank robbery in the anime — and then tries to take Zatch and his spellbook, not knowing only the chosen partner can use it. This despite the fact that he's been working with Reycom for a while now, who ought to know all this. Apparently, Reycom just never bothered to tell him anything.
  • Punch a Wall: He does this after getting fired from his job.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Hosokawa was a poor delivery man who hated his job before meeting Reycom, and used the demon to better himself and take revenge on people he didn't like. Despite that, he sees Reycom as nothing but a tool. When Kiyo furiously points out that Hosokawa is wearing a nice suit while Reycom looks like he just crawled out of a dumpster, Hosokawa just laughs.

Hyde and Eido

    Hyde/Haido

Voiced by: Megumi Urawa (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN), Chelo Vivares (SP), Isabel Martiñón (LA)

Spell Specialization: Wind

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0hyde.png

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo child. Not evil, but ambitious to claim the throne of king and with few regards for the consequences of his actions. He appeared in the anime as the first antagonist that Zatch faced, clashing a couple of times but neither winning or losing.

  • Blow You Away: Hyde's spells are wind-based. Jikir is a strong gust of wind, and Jikirga is a concentrated wind blast.
  • Breakout Character: He and Eido started off as anime-only filler characters with barely two appearances, but apparently were memorable enough that the author ended up including Hyde as one of the Mamodo who helps Zatch in the Final Battle (thereby confirming that he and presumably Eido were part of the battle to become king) and later in a group photo in the Mamodo world school. They even appeared in the official series calendar in 2007 despite being the only non-plot relevant characters to do so.
  • Canon Immigrant: He was created for the anime, but the author later gave him cameos in the manga's final arc.
  • Filler Villain: What he started off as, which was probably a big reason why he and Eido were never seen again shortly after their second appearance. Makoto Raiku would later stealthily include Hyde in the manga through cameos in the last few chapters.
  • Minor Major Character: He's the first villain in the anime and forms one of the few teams which Zatch and Kiyo could not defeat, and also gets an interesting bit of Character Development with Eido in their second and last episode, all of which appeared to set the two as important Foils to the protagonists in the future. However, after a mere cameo in one of Megumi's concerts, they never appear again in the anime.
  • Mirror Character: His character development with Eido mirrors that of Zatch and Kiyo, down to making the same Taking the Bullet moment in their second and last battle.
  • Superpower Lottery: He somehow has powerful wind-related skills that are not spells, such as making himself and Eido fly around or teleport away in a gust of wind.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He and Eido disappear shortly after their second anime-only appearance. He does get cameos in the manga, though.

Hyde's human partner. He's a laid-back playboy who was content to skateboard the day away. He yearned for power to stand up for himself, but was lacking in courage even after he met Hyde. As other demons faced them, however, he slowly built up the strength to stand alongside his partner.

  • Bully Magnet: Hyde first finds Eido when he's being picked on by bullies.
  • Cool Board: Eido likes riding his skateboard while using Hyde's wind spells to fly, though Hyde says it just makes him look like a poser.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Eido kidnaps Zach and Kiyo's friends to force a confrontation with the pair. Unfortunately, he forgot to tell them where to go in the note he sent. His own captives berate him for how stupid that was.
  • Friendless Background: Eido doesn't have any friends.

Gofure and Renji

Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (JP), Steve Blum (EN), Miguel Ángel Leal (LA)

Spell Specialization: Rock

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0gofure.png
Click here to see Gofure transformed

A male 7 year old dog Momodo with the power to transform into a stronger form with spikey rock armor. He fought against Zatch and Kiyo at their house and was ultimately beaten by a surprise attack from Brago and Sherry.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Given Gofure starts trembling and whining when Renji arrived and stopped after a spell was cast, it's likely he also had a forced personality change like Kolulu. The Gash Cafe special contradicts this, suggesting that Gofure has a somewhat sadistic personality even when not transformed.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Gofure specializes in using rocks as armor and weapons.
  • Spikes of Villainy: When entering his transformed state, Gofure grows a thick hide of spiked rocks on his back and tail.

Gofure's human partner.

  • Dirty Coward: He flees in terror when Sherry and Brago beat his Momodo with a single attack.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Renji has a few small scars on his face, which adds to his thuggish appearance and cruelty.
  • Jerkass: He takes delight in fighting what he perceived to be weak opponets.

Sugino and Haru

    Sugino/Sugina

Voiced by: Akemi Misaki (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN), Rossy Aguirre (LA)

Spell Specialization: Plants

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0sugino.png

A male 7 year old Mamodo with the power to control plants that attacked the botanical garden Zatch, Kiyo and Suzy were visiting and captured several of the guests with his tree roots. Afterwards, he fought Zatch and Kiyo and had his book burnt when they reflected his last attack back at him.

  • Elemental Hair Composition: His hair appears to be made of leaves.
  • Green Thumb: Sugino's spells allow him to manipulate plant roots or summon a giant flower that fires projectiles at his enemies.
  • Plant Person: Sugino appears to be one. He can sense others through plants, has a leaf growing out of the top of his head and can use tree roots and flowers to attack people.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He likes fish, shiitake mushrooms and mandarin.
  • Vine Tentacles: Sugino's first spell lets him control tree roots that can be used to entagle or strike at his foes.

    Haru/Haruhiko

Sugino's human partner. He's a young adult man who helped train him and came up with the strategy they used in their battle with Kiyo and Zatch. He is last seen fleeing the gardens after his book is destroyed.

  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Haru quickly discovers that he can only use a certain number of Sugino's spells per day. He assumes this is because spells have a hard limit on how many times they can be cast, not realizing that he's simply drawing from a finite pool of his own emotional energy that he can expand with time.

Fein and Sebe

    Fein

Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (JP), Roger Rose (EN), Gabriel Chávez (LA)

Spell Specialization: Wind

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0fein.png

A male 11 year old Mamodo with the ability to control the wind and move at extreme speeds that encountered Zatch and Kiyo and forced them into a battle in an abandoned building along with his human partner Sebe. This decision would ultimately backfire on the duo however, as choosing an abandoned building filled with metal proves to be just what their foes need to end the battle in their favor. Afterwards, Fein's book is burnt while he is still restrained by Zatch and Kiyo's newest spell.

  • Blow You Away: Fein can manipulate and control wind as his primary form of attack.
  • Fragile Speedster: Fein has a powerful spell that lets him move so fast he at first appears to be teleporting when he uses it. The tradeoff is that because his body is so weak and tiny he ends up getting effortlessly pinned down by heavy metal debris when hit by a single Jikerdor spell, ending the battle in his defeat.
  • Villainous Harlequin: Fein looks like a tiny clown with his outfit and facial design.

    Sebe/Seibei

Fein's human partner.

  • Delinquent Hair: He's a thug with hair in an auburn mohawk and pale yellow buzzcut on the rest of his head.
  • Jerkass: He looks down on everyone around him, blasting civilians without care for being in his way or annoying him, and taunting his opponents at every opportunity.

Eshros and Shin

    Eshros

Voiced by: Yuki Kaida (JP), Scott Menville (EN), Alfredo Leal (LA)

Spell Specialization: Earth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0eshros.png

A male 11-year-old Mamodo with a large arsenal of earth-based spells and his simpleminded but kindhearted partner who battled Zatch and Kiyo in front of his old school. Despite having a poor bond overall they manage to put up a good fight thanks to Eshros large amount of combat spells and raw power.

  • Dishing Out Dirt: All of Eshros spells are earth based.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Eshros uses Shin's dead mother to motivate him to do his bidding, telling him that she'd be disappointed if he didn't do what he said. This comes back to bite him on the ass when Shin gets tired of putting up with his crap.
  • Smug Snake: Eshros boasts that he's an elite Mamodo who can't be beaten. He does have a lot of spells and even some powerful ones, but he's truly nothing special in the overall context of the series.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He likes fish and fried chicken.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Despite having a pretty weak bond overall, Eshros and Shin nearly manage to beat Zatch and Kiyo due to sheer raw power thanks to Eshros large number of offensive spells. (For some reason, he has nearly a dozen avalible at a stage where most other teams only have four or five at the most.)

    Shin/Shinichi
Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (JP), Steve Blum (EN), Ulises Maynardo Zavala (LA)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0akiyama.png

Eshros' human partner. He's a large but kindhearted man.

  • Extreme Doormat: He would never stand up for himself in the past despite his mother urging him to and Eshros' manipulations involve leading him to believe that using the book in battle would be him asserting himself, while following Eshros' instructions, naturally.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite his large physique, Shin is a selfless, kind, gentle, altruistic, and unassertive man.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Eshros' manipuation of Shin causes the latter to soon realize just what a vile and cruel kid he truly is, promising to burn his own book himself to prevent him from hurting anyone else.
  • Nice Guy: Shin is kind to a fault. Sadly, this makes him easy for Eshros to manipulate... at least at first.

    Maruss & Rembrant

Maruss is voiced by: Junko Takeuchi (JP), Joshua Seth (EN), Héctor Emmanuel Gómez (LA)

Rembrant is voiced by: Masayuki Nakata (JP), Roger Rose (EN), Herman López (LA)

Spell Specialization: Metal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maruss_and_rembrant.png
Maruss (left) and Rembrant (right)
A male 10-year-old Mamodo who was a close friend of Tia's back in the Mamodo world but quickly turned against her during their first encounter in the human world. Knowing that she hadn't yet found her human partner and was completely defenseless he attacked her and tried to elimate her from the battle to become king right then and there. Luckily, Tia survived his betrayal and soon partnered up with her friend Megumi and later Kiyo and and Zatch to finish the fight against him once and for all. After an intense battle with the two newly allied teams he got his book burnt with one final Zaker attack that sent him back to the Mamodo world for good. His partner was a middle aged man in a white suit named Rembrant.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: He turns on Tia because, as the contest can only have one winner, every other Mamodo is his enemy. Though only one Mamodo can win, cooperation is vital to gaining an edge and every major player in the battle, even the strongest Mamodo, has at least one or two allies. In fact, the structure of the contest pairing every Mamodo with a human partner suggests that the eventual king being able to team up and collaberate with others was part of the point of the battle.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: His spells allowed him to summon powerful metal weapons like spiked metal balls or even a giant drill.
  • False Friend: Tia considered him to be one of her closest friends while the two were still in the Mamodo world. It isn't long before he shows his true colors though, with a nearly successful attack that leaves her wounded and with severe trust issues. Shocked and deeply hurt by his betrayal, she takes a while to fully recover from the physical and emotional pain he inflicted on her.
  • Foil: He is one to Gash in relation to Tia. While in the Mamodo world he pretended to be nice and friendly to Tia, but he discarded all of that once he contest began and targeted Tia specifically because he thought she would be an easy target. Meanwhile, despite Gash knowing nothing of Tia from before he lost his memories, he immediatly jumps to protect Tia and defend Megumi's concert. Likewhise, despite his amnesia, Tia observes Gash is still the same person in practice, defending others despite the danger, in contrast to how much Maruss changed when arriving in the human world.
  • Kick the Dog: He announces that after defeating Tia, he'll attack and ruin Megumi's concert purely to spite Tia.
  • The Social Darwinist: A firm believer in this, which is why he betrayed Tia. It's also why he's angry when Zatch is able to beat him, since it basically deconstructs his whole philosophy.
  • Sore Loser: Maruss is FURIOUS when Zatch is able to surpass him.
  • This Is a Drill: His ace spell Gigano Garanzu summons a massive spinning drill to attack the opponent with.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Maruss likes fish, korokke, and tulips.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His spells tend to lack subtlety and utility but make up for it with sheer raw power.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Becomes increasingly enraged as Zatch (who he used to bully) not only holds his own, but dominates him during the fight.

    Robnos & Ruku

Ruku is voiced by: Tetsuo Kanao (JP), Wally Wingert (EN)

Spell Specialization: Lasers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robnos_ruku.png
Robnos (left) and Ruku (right)
A male 6 year old Mamodo and his partner who lure Zatch and Kiyo to a giant inductrial freezer by kidnapping Suzy and holding her hostage. It turns out to have been all a clever trap to force Kiyo and Zatch to fight them at a severe disadvantage due to the cold and allow Robnos to make full use of his laser beam and duplication abilities. After temporarily disabling one of the Robnos twins with a Jikerdor spell the two then fuse into their ultimate form for the final stretch of the battle. Seemingly outmatched and outginned against such a powerful opponet a bit of quick thinking from Kiyo saves the day and Robnos is sent packing back to the Mamodo world. As for Suzy... she was never captured by the duo to begin with, just out sick.
  • Cool Helmet: It's actually a huge factor in his defeat. Kiyo was able to correctly guess that his attacks required him to build up power in his helmet before firing and used a metal pole to turn him into a giant lightning rod.
  • Eye Beams: Robnos' most basic spell is a simple laser beam fired from his eye. Unfortunately, the location of the battle allows him to reflect it off of multiple surfaces to hit his target, making for a surprisingly dangerous basic attack.
  • Fusion Dance: There are actually two seperate Robnos at the beginning of the battle that combine their attacks to hit Kiyo and Zatch whenever they try to dodge one of their laser beams. After the second one is captured by Jikerdor, Ruku uses a spell that lets them combine into a single more powerful entity.
  • No-Sell: Subverted. He pretends this happened with Zatch's Zaker spell, but Kiyo realizes that wouldn't have prevented his clothes from being burnt and figures out that he switched himself with another, unburnt copy.
  • Third Eye: His fused form has three eyes which allows him to fire three laser attacks at once.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Robnos prefers fish, menma and piroshki.

Baltro & Steng

Spell Specialization: Manipulation

Click here to see Baltro transformed

A 5-year-old Mamodo that used his power to take over a castle in England and demand tribute from the local townspeople, keeping any would-be heroes at bay with their fearsome army of "Immortal Knights" and several hostages, which included both Kory's parents and Kiyo's father. After their battle with Zatch and Kiyo starts going south, he and his partner decide to make a quick escape and flee while the castle crumbles to the ground around them. Luck isn't on their side however, as Zeno was waiting to prevent them from making a clean getaway and burns their book with a single spell.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Baltro initially appeared to be some sort of towering mecha but was ultimately revealed to be a tiny dog/badger creature with his robot form just being an advanced suit of armor that he could pilot from the inside.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: Zeno hired him and Steng to kidnap Kiyo's father and scattered evidence around his office to pit Kiyo and Zatch against Baltro and Steng.
  • Green Thumb: His spells allowed him to summon and attach special flowers to objects which could then be manipulated by Baltro remotely. This is how he created his army of knights and gigantic armor form.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: After seeing that his true tiny form is about half the size of Zatch, Kiyo decides to mock him for being so puny and weak and immediately starts getting his ass kicked by a very angry Baltro.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Baltro's favorite foods are fish, bread, cactus and crayfish.

A 5-year-old giant Mamodo who was encountered by Zatch and Kiyo during their trip to England. He and his partner are found harassing a young girl named Djem and her partner Yopopo in the hopes of finding and burning their spellbook, even going so far as to attack Djem's family when she doesn't hand over the book to them. After an intense battle between them and a combined team of Zatch, Kiyo, Yopopo and Djem they successfully manage to burn Yopopo's spellbook as intended but are eliminate from the battle themselves immediately afterwards from a combo attack between Zatch and Yopopo.

  • Cyclops: Kikuropu has only one eye.
  • Inhuman Eye Concealers: Kikuropu wears a paper with a picture of two eyes over his one-eye.
  • Made of Iron: Kikuropu has a tough shell-like armor coating. It shrugs off most attacks but the first successful cast of Bao Zakeruga shatters it.

  • Dirty Coward: The British Gentleman goes out of his way to attack a little girl and her family just so he can burn a potential rival's spellbook, but when his own book gets torched he immediately runs off while begging for forgiveness.
  • Faux Affably Evil: The "British Gentleman" attempts to put up a paper-thin air of civility and manners, but it's clear from the moment that he is introduced that this guy is a grade A asshole.
  • Ironic Nickname: His name is never revealed so the man goes by the moniker of "British Gentleman" despite being anything but.

Pokkerio
A minor Mamodo and Human team encountered by Sherry & Brago in South America right after Zatch & Kiyo's England arc in the manga, though they appear much earlier in the anime (episode 12, which is set several episodes before the England arc). They are a cowardly pair with only a few spells who attempt to run at the first sign of strong opponents. Despite having an advantage due to Sherry's extreme exhaustion the two are quickly and soundly defeated when their foes decide to level the surrounding jungle to reveal their hiding place.
  • Dirty Coward: They flee at the first sign of trouple and only attack when they have to.
  • Greed: The human partner refuses to give up his book because it's made him rich.
  • Green Thumb: The Tree Warrior had the power to manipulate vegitation to hide himself and his partner as well as summon several tree monsters to attack his enemies.
  • When Trees Attack: The Mamodo has the power to summon a large swarm of trees to attack foes. He's also a sentient tree himself.
  • Worf Had the Flu: They hold their own against Brago and Sherry for a bit, but only because Sherry in keeling over from exhaustion. Once she rallies the strength for one powerful spell, they are finished.

Zoboron and Hige

    Zoboron

Spell Specialization: Energy Blasts

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0zoboron.png

A 7-year-old lizard Mamodo, originally teamed up with Papipurio and Lupa before their lack of teamwork caused them to go their separate ways. Zoboron is a silent female Mamodo that resembles an iguana and with her partner Hige, they fought against the protagonists at the amusment park and actually had them on the ropes for a bit with their combo attacks before a fight between them ends their partnership. At the end of the battle their spellbook gets burned and Zoboron gets sent back to the Mamodo world, leaving Hige to desperately try to rejoin with Papipurio & Lupa as they make their escape.

  • Killer Rabbit: Zoboron looks like an ordinary harmless iguana and can fire out massive energy blasts that wouldn't be out of place in a series like DBZ.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: A variation; Zoboron's spells are extremely powerful, but just as easy to dodge. Not helping matters is that Hige is remarkably stupid, and therefore incapable of mitigating this handicap with strategy.

    Hige

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0hige.png

Zoboron's human partner. He's a rude and selfish man wearing what appears to be a toga.

  • The Cameo: He has the honor of being the first former human partner who appears in the sequel, not counting Kiyo of course. He starts working at the Egyptian village that Kiyo was taking care of right as the heroes are about to leave, but Kiyo doesn't remember him at all.
  • Dirty Coward: He uses Papipurio as a Human Shield to absorb attacks, which infuriates his partner Lupa.
  • Jerkass: Even with his more antagonistic traits overlooked, Hige is a selfish, childish, rude and whiny jerk who wouldn't even let his Mamodo join him on his ride at the park and drags it around on a leash like a pet.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Hige behaves like a giant selfish kid and is just as dangerous as any other villainous opponent the heroes have faced.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Despite hailing the strength of their combination, Hige is barely able to be civil with Papipurio and Lupa and their poor relationship is contrasted with the genuine friendship of Zatch, Kiyo, Megumi, and Tia.

Papipurio and Lupa

    Papipurio

Voiced by: Michiru Yamazaki (JP), Sam Riegel (EN), Pilar Coronado (SP), Moisés Iván Mora (LA)

Spell Specialization: Chemical

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/purio_golden_memories.png

A male 8-year-old humanoid Mamodo dressed like a prince. A comparatively weak demon who survived by laying low and repeatedly partnering with other demons. Cowardly and something of a spoiled brat, but with a good heart beneath it all. His spells are more disruptive than destructive, but not to be underestimated.

  • Affably Evil: Despite how much he and Lupa antagonized Gash and the others in their past battles and involving themselves in resurrecting Faudo, they were never really evil in the first place, and they eventually lose their selfish attitude after being saved by Kanchome.
  • Born Lucky: Manages to get into the last ten demons despite being absurdly weak.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He and Lupa plan to hide out in a bomb shelter until all the other Mamodo eliminate each other and leave no competition for Papipurio to become king. How they expect to defeat the last Mamodo left, who has defeated all the others, is never explained.
  • Friendless Background: Papipurio making friends with Kanchome has him remark it's the first time he's had a friend.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He and Lupa were never really evil, but they eventually lose their selfish attitude after being saved by Kanchome.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Papipurio is this for Lupa's deceased son, with her outright saying she's his mom at one point.
  • So Last Season: His problem is his spells are always at the level everyone else's were one arc ago.
  • Status Effects: Papipurio's spells are full of things like paralysis, itching, and blinding effects.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Defied. He and Lupa try to do this to set up a hostage exchange with Kyle, but Gash just keeps chasing them until they reach the exchange spot.

    Lupa

Papipurio's human partner. She's a loopy-looking middle-aged woman. After the death of her son, Lupa came to see Papipurio as her son as well. She spoiled him rotten, but also protected him as much as she could, yet at times was as cowardly as he.

  • Foil: She is contrasted with Folgore towards the end of the series, emphasizing how Folgore is a father figure to Kanchome and how Lupa was so afraid of losing Papipurio that she ended up stunting his growth as a fighter.
  • Gonk: Lupa is acknowledged as being "ugly" and sometimes her head comically grows in size to make her seem more weird.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Lupa appears to be modeled after Whoopi Goldberg from her role in Sister Act.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Papipurio met her at the grave of her late son, who died of a heart condition. For further tragedy, she loses Papipurio soon after he acknowledges her as a second mom.

Spell Specialization: Water

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/patie_golden_memories.png

A female 7-year-old humanoid Mamodo and one of Zatch’s friends. She has an obsessive one-sided crush on Zatch, and misplaced anger led her to serve Zofis in the battle. Very vain, but not without conscience. Her spells are Water-based.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the illustrations on the covers of the manga, her hair is a pinkish white color, but in the anime, it is turquoise. Also, her crown hair accessories are blue in the manga, while they're yellow in the anime.
  • Animal Motifs: Her twintails are styled to resemble rabbit ears and her dress has a white ball attached to the back of the waist, mimicking a rabbit's tail.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's extremely cute and sweet at first glance, but beneath that face, she's extremely selfish, vain, and ultimately just unpleasant.
  • Cute and Psycho: At first, she comes off as sweet and nice, if vain. Once she learns Zatch doesn't remember her, however, she turns into a rabid lunatic.
  • Distaff Counterpart: To Zatch. When she cuts off her hair in the Millennial Demon Arc, she looks almost exactly like him. Many of their spells mirror each other as well, most notably "So Giaku" and "Baou Zakeruga."
  • Elemental Barrier: She can create a shield made from water that can also absorb electrical attacks.
  • Elemental Eye Colors: She's a blue-eyed water user.
  • Elemental Hair Colors: The anime gives her blueish hair to match her water element.
  • Entitled to Have You: She's absolutely convinced that Zatch owes her reciprocating her feelings because she has been obsessed with him since the first time she saw him. In her mind, Zatch accepting fish from her is undeniable proof that he's her boyfriend. She finds it extremely insulting that Zatch forgot about her, even though he has amnesia and she never made that much of an impression on him regardless of that.
  • Evil Is Petty: She joins in with Zofis simply because Zatch doesn't remember her in the Demon World despite the fact he lost his memory, finding it unforgivable that he forgot about her regardless of the reason. Kiyo tried to explain this to her, but due to some bad communication from Zatch, it just makes Penny think she's being taken advantage of.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She's a very immature brat with her hair styled in two pigtails pointed upwards.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Her panties have an image of Zatch's face.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In the Ancient Mamodo Arc. After Zatch demands to know if Penny is aware of how awful she's treated the other Ancient Mamodos and their brainwashed human partners, along with all the other terrible things she's done, Penny tries to redeem herself by helping defeat Demolt and destroy the Moonlight Stone with Byonko and Alvin. It's also the first time Uri actively helps her instead of just following orders, as she's doing something noble for once, even giving Penny orders instead of the other way around, to which she agrees.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Catches Demolt's attention so he would attack her instead of Ururu. Zatch and Ponygon keep her from dying, although her book is still burned.
  • Important Haircut: She cuts her pigtails off to use in distracting Demolt, cementing her Heel–Face Turn. The grand finale shows she keeps the shorter hairstyle.
  • It's All About Me: She only cares about what she wants and throws a fit when things don't go her way. During a flashback of their early adventures together, Penny made Uri sound like an Ungrateful Bastard when he was trying to warn her about how selfish her actions were, even outright stating that he was starving for food and work before Penny met him, and is now able to eat three meals a day because of her. It isn't until the battle with Demolt that Uri finally gets through to Penny about how her selfishness won't be enough to either defeat Demolt or destroy the Moonlight Stone, leading Penny to realize that she also needs to follow orders from Uri in order to work together and accomplish their goal.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: She always wears a blue Pimped-Out Dress, even when she goes into battle.
  • Little Miss Badass: In their first battle, the small Penny was actually kicking Zatch's butt for a good portion of the fight.
  • Love at First Sight: She was smitten with Zatch while watching him wrangle a fish from her private beach.
  • Making a Splash: All her spells revolve around the power of Water, which she can use to absorb Gash's Lightning powers and send it right back at him, proving her powers to easily counter his. Of course, after her Heel–Face Turn, she and Gash's powers combine to fight against Demolt in order to help destroy the Moonlight Stone.
  • Nightmare Face: She puts on a pretty nasty face whenever something or someone sets her off.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Anytime Zatch doesn't recall her or rejects her feelings is all she needs to go off the deep end.
  • Pet the Dog: Though she was totally selfish and committed illegal acts in order to do so, her helping provide for Ururu's family was pretty nice of her.
  • Princess Phase: She dresses like a fairy tale princess and dreams of marrying a prince which is why she's so obsessed with Zatch.
  • Puppy Love: She's a 7-year-old kid with a big crush on Zatch, who is only a year younger than her.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: Inside her head, she's Zatch's girlfriend, but in reality, she was just a stalker and had no real interaction with him besides her giving him a fish as a present. Whether or not he had amnesia, asking him to remember her would have probably been pointless.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Her strongest spell creates a huge dragon of water to attack her foe.
  • Spoiled Brat: It's implied that her parents are rich, since she has her own private beach in the Mamodo World, which would help explain why she ended so self-centered and self-entitled.
  • Stalker with a Crush: No matter how much she sugarcoats it to make it seem like she was Zatch's girlfriend, it is pretty obvious in flashbacks that she was just an obsessed stalker who deluded herself into thinking Zatch liked her because he accepted a fish from her.
  • Sweet Tooth: She loves sweets in particular.
  • Third-Person Person: In the original Japanese, she refers to herself in the third person, calling herself "Patie-sama".
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: Her dynamic with Uri is basically her bossing him around and having him fulfill her every whim because she knows he can't say no to the one who is keep him afloat.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She starts as an absolutely selfish, entitled, and petty brat, but becomes nicer after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • True Blue Femininity: She's a very feminine girl who always wears a blue dress.
  • Water Is Womanly: A young girl who likes pretty things, has obsessive romantic feelings for Zatch, and wears a blue dress. She uses water spells, one of which forms a huge dragon made of water.
  • Woman Scorned: She feels scorned by Zatch because he forgot about her, even though that's Zeno's fault, and makes it her main goal to make him pay for hurting her feelings, even joining Zofis' side to get back at him.
  • Yandere: She has an obsessive crush on Zatch and goes livid when he admits he can't remember her (because of his amnesia), swearing to burn his book for forgetting his "true love".

    Uri/Ururu

Voiced by: Kosuke Toriumi (JP), Stephen Apostolina (EN), Alejandro García (SP), Daniel Lacy (LA)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ururu_golden_memories.png

Penny's human partner. He's a poor man whom Penny found trying to find food for his family. He reluctantly went along with the demon's thievery sprees to help provide for them and stood by her even as she allied herself under Zofis. Their bond only truly connected when he found his courage and Penny found her conscience.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: His hat is yellow in the manga, but the anime changed its color to brown.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: He has to put up with a lot because he depends on a selfish brat to support himself financially.
  • Extreme Doormat: He goes along with Penny's whims as he needs her Mamodo powers to support his family. He just doesn't really bother to put his foot down with Penny because he knows there's no point, as she won't listen to him no matter what.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: He has blank white eyes.

Byonko and Alvin

    Byonko

Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (JP), Brian Beacock (EN), Javier Balas (SP)

Spell Specialization: Slime

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/byonko.png

A male 6-year-old Mamodo resembling a frog, he was a loyal servant to Zofis. Childish, naïve, and annoyingly persistent, he wants nothing more than friends to play with.

  • Big Damn Heroes: Double-subverted. He tries to come from out of nowhere to save Patty from Zatch's Baou Zakeruga, but forgot that Alvin wasn't there to actually cast any of his spells and he gets blasted alongside her. Still, there being two targets instead of one diffuses Baou's power enough that they both survive. Played straight after his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Byonko is pretty much a joke. He only ever shows up to get his ass kicked and Alvin doesn't read the spells to help him. But once he does, the first thing Byonko does is knock Demolt on his ass.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Alvin promised to give him a cookie at three o'clock, so Byonko made a fake clock set at that time. It was stupid and cute enough to convince Alvin to participate in the battle to become king.
  • Heel Realization: He eventually turns on Zofis after realizing he'd much rather be friends with the heroes.

    Alvin
Voiced by: Masaaki Tsukada (JP), David Lodge (EN), Fernando Hernández (SP)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alvin_zatch_bell.jpg

Byonko's human partner.

  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: His eyebrows are as thick and bushy as his mustache.
  • The Gloves Come Off: He intentionally removes his false teeth to hinder himself and Byonko. However, once Byonko realizes the true nature of Zofis and switches over with Penny to Zatch's side, he puts on the false teeth, allowing Byonko to fight.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a grumpy, retired old man who initially saw Byonko as an ‘uncool’ hindrance, but after watching some of his efforts grew fond of him and decided to make him into a ‘cool’ guy.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Alvin pretends to forget his dentures so he won't have to support Zofis.
  • Tragic Keepsake: After Byonko is sent back to the Mamodo World, Alvin keeps the same leaf he took from Byonko close by.
  • The Unintelligible: He has an unfortunate habit of not wearing his dentures, leaving him unable to read the spells. Turns out he was doing it on purpose to not fight on Zofis' side.

Rodeaux and Chita

    Rodeaux

Voiced by: Susumu Chiba (JP)

Spell Specialization: Wings

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0rodeaux.png

A male humanoid Mamodo adolescent and one of the Usurpers among the Faudo Cultists. A proud and strong demon who desired nothing more than being the strongest, he has a well-hidden heart of gold beneath the surface. His will is indomitable, and he gives allegiance to nobody but is not above allying with others. His bat-like wings are the medium and focus for his powers.

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Lets his book be burned rather than be torn apart by the Faudo cells inside him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Kiyo woke up, he stood no chance against Zatch's new powers. After a barrage of attacks from Kiyo, he lies on the floor while they turn their attention to Zeno.
  • Do Not Go Gentle: As his own body is destroyed from within, Rodeaux continues his attacks on Zeno not letting his increasing wounds slow him down. This situation also serves as a Rousing Speech for his partner Cheeta who became emotionless from losing an eye.
  • Doomed Moral Victor: He can't resist Zeno and even attempting to causes his body to tear itself apart, with Rodeaux clearly defining his victory as him asserting his independence from Zeno's control rather than actually inflicting damage.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He offers to let Zatch and Kiyo flee from his fight with Rein and is disappointed when they refuse. He happens to love gunning down people who abandon their comrades to save themselves.
  • Go Out with a Smile: He smiled as he was sent back to the demon world on his terms fighting for what he wanted and not as a pawn.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rodeaux was an antagonist towards Zatch and his group, but he formed a bond with his partner that any other heroic demon character had, although subtle.
  • Last Villain Stand: He takes a final opportunity to attack Zeno while Dufaux's heart power is being restored, despite his own body being destroyed from within by Faudo's cells.
  • Made of Iron: Rodeaux is shown to be very resistant to spells at many points, as he survived when he was attacked by Kiyo's constant Zaker attacks after he was defeated in Faudo's brain room.
  • Pet the Dog: The speech that Rodeaux gives to Chita before his book is burned, telling her to find her own willpower.
  • Razor Wings: Rodeaux's spells consist of making his wings into attacks. His most powerful spells create large black blades from his wings to attack.
  • The Starscream: His intent to usurp Faudo's power, but naturally nothing comes of it due to Leo and Zeon severely outclassing him.
  • Villainous Valour: His last stand against Zeno has his body being ripped apart by Faudo's cells, but he continues his assault fighting for himself.
  • Winged Humanoid: Rodeaux has demonic-looking wings.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Rodeaux's last words to Cheeta, despite trying to make it sound like a "The Reason You Suck" Speech. He tells Chita that he's hated her for being so depressed and letting one injury change her life, and leaves her with encouragement.
"Live strong. Believe in yourself... Your wounds mean nothing... Laugh more, stand up straight... fall in love..."

    Chita

Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0chita.png

Rodeaux's human partner.

  • Blemished Beauty: She still looks cute despite having half of her face disfigured.
  • Broken Bird: After losing her eye in an argument with her abusive boyfriend, who left her afterwards, Chita grew to be emotionless and distant from others. Until Rodeaux tells her to stand up for her true feelings before he vanishes.
  • Eye Scream: She lost her right eye as part of her backstory.
  • Masking the Deformity: Chita lost her right eye and wears a mask to cover half of her face because of it.
  • The Stoic: She remains stoic and composed for the most part, reading situations and rationing her Heart Energy appropriately.

    Zaruchim & Raushin Mo

Zaruchim is voiced by: Ryō Horikawa (JP)

Raushin Mo is voiced by: Masami Kikuchi (JP)

Spell Specialization: Shadows

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cha_zaruchim.gif
Zaruchim with his Bookkeeper
A male Mamodo child and the only demon among the Faudo cultists that was loyal to Riou. He has several eyes, which grant him magically enhanced sight, and is clad in dark clothing that covers everything below his eyes. Cool, calculating, and vindictive to those who wrong him, yet despite his enhanced sight, he experienced tunnel vision when it came to his goals. His power over shadows makes him a formidable foe.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: As his book burns, he laments that he wasn't friends with Leo and that after all their hard work, the grand vision they once had was stolen from them with ease by Zeno. His last act is to apologize to his partner for being a handful.
  • Anti-Villain: Despite what he says, he's really only in it to help Leo.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Fango. An omake panel reveals he was absolutely seething despite his apparent composure.
  • Doomed Moral Victor: He rejects Faudo's power, seeing accepting it as a betrayal to Leo, and his fight with Aleshie is so close he probably would have won with it.
  • Enigmatic Minion: His motives remain a mystery, even to himself.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: He has eyes on all sides of his head and on his palms. They emit the light he needs for his shadows.
  • Human Shield: He uses Fango as a shield to survive Aleshie's ultimate attack.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Implied. In defeat, he laments his loss to him and Fango lacking teamwork and even asks himself why he felt misery at seeing Leo be defeated.
  • Living Shadow: His power includes shadow manipulation and creating things made of shadow.
  • Sinister Schnoz: Raushin, especially in the manga, where it's *long* too.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He and Fango are all but attacking each other despite being on the same side.
  • Tragic Villain: After Leo is defeated, all he had left was a pointless grudge against Alishie. Alishie recognized how empty he was and pitied him.
  • Unfriendly Fire: Fango clips him with one of his spells, badly burning Zaruchim's arm.
  • Villainous BSoD: Aleshie sent him into one when they first met. After looking into his eyes Zaruchim was left frozen and trembling. Avenging that humiliation is a major motivator for him.
  • Villainous Friendship: Leo's defeat pretty much kills his drive. He later laments that he wasn't even friends with Leo, but it's unclear if he's in denial or sad that their businesslike relationship wasn't more personal.
  • Worthy Opponent: His treatment of Riya and Aleshie, especially Aleshie, is an odd case. The gist of it is that he considers them to be this trope, but can't bring himself to admit it, and therefore wants to crush and humiliate them to prove he's the better fighter.

    Keith & Berun

Keith is voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (JP)

Berun is voiced by: Satoshi Taki (JP)

Spell Specialization: Lasers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monster_2359.png
Keith (front) with Berun (behind)
Keith is a male 17-year-old Mamodo child and one of the Usurpers among the Faudo cultists. A quirky but undeniably powerful demon who saw himself as equal to the four prodigies until Bari defeated him soundly. He saw Bari as a rival from that time on, and unlike him, he never was able to grasp the true meaning of strength. His spells focus around lasers.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Keith is nuts, changing moods, hobbies, and whims on a moment's notice. His huge cigar and big gloves make him look like a Looney Tunes character.
  • Foil: Keith to Bari. They're both powerful combatants with polar opposite personalities, Keith being boisterous and silly and Bari being stoic and serious. This goes as far as the appearances of their spells: Bari's manifest as spirals while Keith's manifest as straight arrows. Most notably, while Bari matures past his Blood Knight tendencies, Keith loses himself to his desire for more power.
  • I Have to Go Iron My Dog: At the end of his first match with the heroes, they are incapable of fighting back but Keith himself is out of spells and badly injured. So he bails out of the fight without either admitting defeat or pressing his luck by claiming he's going to go get a snack.
  • Jerkass: Keith outshines even the most overtly evil demons, simply because he's a massive asshole.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When they meet again, Bari sees himself before his Character Development in Keith and gives him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech related to his inability to overcome his flaws the way Bari himself has.
  • The Rival: Keith to Bari. When they meet again, Bari has outgrown the rivalry and finds the reminder of who he used to be annoying.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Keith has a preference for cigars.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Keith gets three powerups from Faudo in his fight with Bari. They make no difference.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Initially, Keith seems immune to the personality alteration of Faudo's power beyond it killing his drive to usurp Zeno. After his defeat however, he activates a death trap and admits that he probably wouldn't have done so without Faudo's influence.

    Gorm & Mir

Spell Specialization: "Black Room"/Void

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gorm_and_mir.jpg
Gorm (right) and Mir (left)
A male beetle-like Mamodo child implied to be stunted mentally, and grew up with no friends; due to this, he allied himself with Clear Note in the battle, offering his abilities in exchange for being the only one he would spare. The power of his black hole spells coupled with his almost global demon sense make him nearly unstoppable.
His partner is a young woman implied to have been part of an Russian mafia. She is somewhat conceited and rather snotty and sadistic but cares dearly for her partner.
  • Adapted Out: Doesn't appear in the anime as the story there ends with Zeno as the final opponent.
  • The Aloner: Gorm was alone in the demon world, with no friends or family. His partnership with Clear is based on a lack of attachment with any of the other demons, with Clear being willing to allow him to live so long as Gorm is the only one left. Once Kanchome befriends him, he decides to oppose Clear.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason behind his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Gorm's appearance is similar to a beetle.
  • Dark and Troubled Past:
    • Mir is implied to have been a former moll for the Russian mob. It explains her behavior regarding her sadism and unpleasantness along with her fear in defying Clear Note, as seen with the scars on her backs.
    • Gorm's willingness to allow Clear to kill everyone else is alluded to be because he lived alone at the bottom of a deep hole and so had no friends or family.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: Gorm's ability to teleport makes him this trope on two legs. He's able to catch Earth at his weakest and elminate him from the tournament. And Clear only survives his battle with Ashuron due to Gorm being able to teleport him away before Zatch and Brago can take advantage of the opening.
  • Last of His Kind: This is his plan, to win the battle alongside Clear and let Clear kill all the other Mamodo with the King's Privilege and then kill himself, leaving Gorm the only Mamodo left.
  • Power of the Void: His spell theme. Works slightly different from Clear's and looks drastically different. Seems to work more like a spatial anomaly rather than annhilation.
  • Thinking Up Portals: He has the ability to create wormholes that can be used to warp anywhere in the world or even to alternate planes of reality. And critically, it's simply an ability he naturally has, he doesn't need his spellbook partner to cast anything.
  • The Unintelligible: Gorm, albeit Mir (and arguably Kanchome) can understand what he is saying.
  • Villain Teleportation: His shtick is creating wormholes to travel through. This is extremely dangerous, as it lets him and Clear attack from out of nowhere and instantly retreat to safety whenever they want. And uniquely, he doesn't even need his spellbook to do it, it's simply something he can do at will.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: When he rebels, Clear slices him in half, fully intending to kill him. Zatch is able to send him back before he dies.

Thousand-Year Old Demons/Ancient Mamodos

Goren of the Stone and Maurice

    Goren of the Stone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goren.png

Voiced by: Keijin Okuda (JP)

Spell Specialization: Petrificiation

A demon child resembling a centaur crossed with a gorgon. He boasts the most victories in the previous battle, sealing over 40 mamodos into lithographs, which set the stage for Zofis's plans in the next battle.

  • Combat Pragmatist: Pamoon had the upper hand in their fight, but Goren pretended to have taken a hostage to distract him.
  • The Dreaded: He was considered the most dangerous mamodo of his generation for his power and his ruthlessness. He exploited this to keep anyone from trying to stop him. It failed as four teams, lead by Dauwan Bell and Willy, stopped his reign of terror.
  • One-Man Army: He personally defeated at least 40 Mamodo, nearly half the contestants in his battle to be king.
  • Taken for Granite: His main spell power in Gorogojio. It's devastatingly effective, to the point where he defeated nearly half of his demon competitors with just Maurice.

    Maurice

Voiced by: Hideo Watanabe (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maurice_zatch_bell.png

Goren's human partner.

  • Black Cloak: He's a nervous-looking man wearing a black robe.
  • Bully and Wimp Pairing: While not confirmed regarding personality, given how Goren is a monstrous and tough Mamodo and his partner Maurice is a rather wimpy-looking cultist, it at least resembles this.

Laila and Albert

    Laila

Voiced by: Rumi Shishido (JP), Kate Higgins (EN), Valle Acebrón (SP)

Spell Specialization: Moon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0reira.png

A female 1,007-year-old humanoid Ancient Mamodo and one of Zatch’s friends. Alone among Goren of the Stone’s victims, Laila was staunchly opposed to Zofis’s ambitions and aided Zatch and his friends from the moment she met them. Her spells focus around the crescent moon on the end of the wand she carries, which can fire energy beams, grow gigantic, and even multiply.

  • Horned Humanoid: Laila has small horns on her head.
  • Little Miss Badass: A tiny little girl, and still one of the most powerful demons we see.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Once the stone of moonlight is destroyed, Laila starts smack-talking Demolt like there's no tomorrow.
  • Lunacy: Laila's spell theme is geared towards crescent moons.
  • Not So Above It All: She's shown to be a serious character quite unlike the protagonists. After she properly joins them, the next chapter features her comically forgetting the castle's traps and triggering the kind of hijinks common to the series.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She's small, but still able to throw Demolt around.
  • The Stoic: Laila's facial expression rarely changes, except to occasionally give a rather charming smile.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Despite technically being over 1000 years old, Laila's still just a 7-year-old mentally. Still, she's incredibly intelligent and nearly unflappable.

     Albert

Voiced by: Kishow Taniyama (JP), Crispin Freeman (EN), Cholo Moratalla (SP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0albert.png

Laila's human partner and a college student. He broke through Zofis's brainwashing out of care for Laila and stood alongside her as a true partner when the spell was broken completely. Strong-willed, witty, and intelligent.

Victoream and Mohawk Ace

    Victoream

Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (JP), Quinton Flynn (EN), Miguel Zúñiga (SP)

Spell Specialization: V-shaped lasers

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0victoream.png

A male Ancient Mamodo adolescent with an angular body, pointed feet, wiry arms, and a V-shaped head which he can detach and levitate at will. Proud and easily angered, yet not difficult to bribe and befriend.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's a complete idiot, but his power is no joke.
  • Breakout Character: He appears for only a short time, but remains one of the most popular characters of the series.
  • Charged Attack: His Chaaguru Imisudon spell fires a gigantic V-shaped laser after using the Chaaguru charging spell five times in a row. It can also be fired before all charges are completed, at the cost of its size and power.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Jumps the heroes expressly because he knows they are exhausted.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Apparently. Victoreem is one of the mamodo who lends his spells to Zatch to defeat Clear, even giving him some friendly advice on how to use it properly. Even Zatch is surprised by this.
  • Energy Weapon: He shoots V-shaped lasers.
  • Groin Attack: Tio pelts his 'little gentleman' with rocks.
  • Large Ham: He gives grandiose narration to events even as he accidentally shoots himself with his own spell.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: In the anime, he is given an acute passion for melons after trying the one Folgore gave him, to the point of foregoing his anger at being humiliated and outdone to have more of the fruit.

     Mohawk Ace

Voiced by: Yoshikazu Nagano (JP), Jason Spisak (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0mohawkace.png

  • Numerological Motif: He has a black number 1 tattooed on his forehead and chest.
  • Spikes of Villainy: He's one of Zofis' brainwashed miniond and the shoulders of his coat have numerous foot-long spikes.

    Tsao-lon

Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (JP), Steve Staley (EN)

Spell Specialization: Staff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsao_lon_golden_memories.png

A male 1,018-year-old humanoid Ancient Mamodo, roughly four feet tall, and one of the Four Supreme Demons. Proud of his strength, he desired nothing more than proving his power against worthy opponents.

  • Anime Hair: His hair is full of spikes and appears to defy gravity.
  • Telescoping Staff: His spells all revolve around making her staff longer and stronger.

    Gensou

Voiced by: Nobutoshi Canna (JP), Liam O'Brien (EN)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gensou_golden_memories.png

Tsao-lon's human partner. He's a master martial artist.

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: His strength allows him to match demons with his bare hands.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Gensou was a skilled martial artist, then Zofis empowered him to be able to fight on the level of a Mamodo.
  • Not Brainwashed: Rather than being brainwashed, Gensou joined Zofis willingly for the chance to fight Mamodo.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He always has an intimidating frown on his face.
  • Spirited Competitor: He submitted to Zofis's conditions due to his desire to fight opponents that were stronger than humans, caring nothing for good or evil and only seeking strength.

Belgim E.O. and Dalia

    Belgim E.O.

Voiced by: Shigeru Chiba (JP), Neil Kaplan (EN), Óscar Castellanos (SP)

Spell Specialization: Ghosts

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belgim.png

A male 1,006-year-old Ancient Mamodo a few dozen feet tall, and one of the Four Supreme Demons. He resembles an Egyptian mummy and is almost always sitting in a large stone throne. Not particularly evil, but rather childish; he can be easily appeased with entertainment, but grows angry if tricked or bored. The E. and O. in his name stand for Japanese words that translate to "chair" and "punishment".

  • Ax-Crazy: He's the worst kind of nutcase, the kind with two chair-mounted machine guns and magical powers.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He nearly kills Dr. Riddles and is so strong that Kido is forced to sacrifice himself in order to beat him!
  • Never My Fault: He tries to sing along to Folgore's song but bites his tongue and proceeds to blame him for it, with Folgore protesting it's obviously not his fault.
  • Obfuscating Disability: It's not clear whether he was deliberately pretending to be stuck in his chair, but it still comes as a shock to Professor Riddle that Belgim is capable of standing up and smacking him with the chair.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Subverted. He has the appearance of a mummy and towers over even the adult humans and has a very childish personality, but per the rules of the contest he really is a child.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He could have easily blown away his enemies had he fought them properly, fortunately his antics allowed them a chance at victory.
  • Younger Than He Looks: Despite his appearance, Belgim is actually six years old mentally. It really helps explain his easily-distracted personality and random mood swings.

Belgim's human partner.

  • Cheshire Cat Grin: She sports a disturbing grin from ear to ear.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She's dark-haired, pale-skinned, and looks very creepy, which is made worse by Belgim's ghost magic.
  • Laughing Mad: She's an insane middle-aged woman; the only dialogue she had aside from her spells was mad laughter, though she has enough clarity of mind to cast the spells as needed.
  • Limp and Livid: She's always seen limp and hunched over as she holds her spell book on her hands, all whily sporting a loony grin.
  • Vocal Dissonance: In the anime (moreso the original than the dub), while her laughs are shrill and high-pitched like a witch's, her voice becomes a sudden contralto when chanting spells.

Spell Specialization: Stars

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cha_pamoon.png

A male 1,008-year-old humanoid Ancient Mamodo child clad in armor, one of the Four Supreme Mamodo, and one of Zatch’s friends. Kindhearted in the past, Pamoon fueled his spells with the anger and fear born of 1,000 years of stone when Gash clashed with him. The young king got through to him, however, and established a friendship. Pamoon's spells revolve around the numerous floating five-pointed stars that he controls.

  • Anime Hair: His hair is shaped like a five-pointed star.
  • Anti-Villain: Unlike the other three, all he wants is to not be turned to stone again by Zofis.
  • Brick Joke: Zatch and Kiyo find out that Pamoon was the stone tablet that Kiyo bought when Pamoon asks him if he was the human who did weird stuff to him.
  • Fatal Flaw: He considers it to be his compassion, as back during his war he could have beaten Goren if he hadn't been distracted by an obviously faked hostage.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: After he loses and decides to fight with Zatch, Zofis appears and burns his book.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Is able to accurately attack his enemies just off the sounds they make while an entire floor below them.
  • Star Power: His main ability is manipulating star-shaped drones. They do everything from firing lasers, blocking attacks, and powering Pamoon up.

Pamoon's human partner and a descendant of Pamoon's former book owner, Shelby.

  • Mind-Control Eyes: His eues lack pupild to show that he's one of Zofis' brainwashed puppets.

Spell Specialization: Berserker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0demolt_28229.png
A male Ancient Mamodo, roughly 70 feet tall, and the strongest of the Four Supreme Mamodo. His form is akin to a humanoid dinosaur with large horns, claws, and wings along with metal armor.
  • Blood Knight: He laughs after being hit in the face by Ponygon and Zatch.
  • The Brute: Plays this role much better due to his lack of intelligence. until his master unintentionally activated the spell to boost his intelligence.
  • Catchphrase: Refers to a lot of things as "depressing."
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: His final spell. Not for him, for his master since it makes Demolt intelligent enough to stop taking orders.
  • Discard and Draw: His final spell greatly boosts his power but he doesn't use any other spells during its duration. Whether this is because he's incapable of doing so or because him eating his master prevented any spell calling is unclear.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's supposed to be this. The fact that he's actually fighting strategically is what clues Laila in to the fact that his partner isn't controlled.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: In the Ancient battle, he was known as ‘The Crazed Warrior, Berserker’, a juggernaut that used brute force rather than tact to win his fights; Zofis used him as the guardian of the Stone of Moonlight.

Demolt's human partner.

  • Brilliant, but Lazy: One of the reasons Demolt is able to give Zatch and the others so much trouble is because of his intelligent fighting strategies, but he outright calls himself the type of person who prefers taking the easy way in life and avoid hard work.
  • Broken Tears: Starts shedding these after the Stone of Moonlight is destroyed, lamenting about how the promise of having and using it to do something big with his life was what compelled him to finally work his hardest.
  • Getting Eaten Is Harmless: Floating around in Demolt's stomach acid after being swallowed by him just knocked him out.
  • Not Brainwashed: His mind is not controlled and plans to use the Stone of Moonlight to control the minds of humans after Zofis becomes king.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he realizes Demolt isn't going to let himself get bossed around by him anymore.
  • Sanity Slippage: Once the Stone of Moonlight is destroyed he loses it, and impulsively uses Demolt's Dangerous Forbidden Technique despite Zofis warning him of its immense danger. He comes to regret it not long after.
