In the Manga

  • Action Girl: All three girls are very capable of kicking ass, whether on their own or in a team.
  • Badass Family: Towa and Setsuna are twin sisters while Moroha is their cousin. Plus they are all action girls with demon powers, thanks to being the granddaughters of Toga, the Great Dog Demon himself.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Setsuna's demon hunter abilities and training makes her the fighter, Towa's Laser Blade and her manipulation of it makes her the Mage, and Moroha's agility, ranged attacks, and sneaky tactics makes her the thief.
  • Furry Reminder: They will from time to time do things that will remind the audience they are part Dog Demon, such as run on all fours.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Towa and Setsuna are both half-demons and Moroha is quarter-demon.
  • The Hecate Sisters: All three girls are the same age, but otherwise fit the trope well. Towa is the Maiden; she's the kindest and most optimistic, but also the least willing to fight and her naivety is often exploited by enemies. Moroha is the Mother; she's rather brash and headstrong, but also intelligent, fiercely loyal, and caring in a rough way. Setsuna is the Crone; Quiet, sharp-witted and stoic, yet wise and noble with a hidden soft side.
  • Hot-Blooded: The girls are as equally hot-blooded or more than their fathers. They even share this trait from their long-dead grandfather.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: All of them go around killing the demons they encounter even thought they themselves are part-demon. Setsuna ,in particular, embodies this trope to a T considering how she is an actual Demon Slayer and is fully aware of her demon heritage.
  • Instant Expert: All three girls have shades of this.
    • Towa after only using her demonic powers for the first time to make a Laser Blade, quickly figures out how to do so at will and just a few days later, upgrades to a powerful Sword Beam.
    • Setsuna and Moroha quickly acclimate to the modern day. Setsuna manages to become adept with the violin with just a few days instruction from Sota's wife, and Moroha managed to figure out how to use Sota's credit card to go shopping.
  • Irony: Inuyasha and Sesshomaru had a Sibling Rivalry that slowly toned down as the series went on. Meanwhile Sesshomaru's daughters, Towa and Setsuna, avoid that trope instead becoming a Long-Lost Relative to one another, and they work alongside Inuyasha's daughter, Moroha, with whom they get along just fine.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Outright telling Osamu Kirin that Rion died hundreds of years ago causes him to go from wanting to destroy the True Grim Comet to taking it into the past to destroy all demons with it, and he was unaware that she died years ago.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: Towa, being the kindest and most sensitive of the bunch, is the the Nice. Setsuna, being rather quite stern and serious is the Mean. Moroha, being more sensitive than Setsuna, but less so than Towa, and also tending to have episodes of Greed is the In-Between.
  • Shared Family Quirks: With the exception of Setsuna, Towa and Moroha inherit some dog-like attributes. They tend to run on all fours and growl; in Towa's case, she also shakes her head when it's covered with water.
  • Tangled Family Tree: Hoo-boy. First off, Towa and Setsuna are twin sisters, Moroha is their half-cousin. Towa has an adopted sister named Mei, who is Moroha's first cousin, and whose father is the blood sibling of Moroha's mother. Notably, this actually makes Towa her own adoptive half-cousin-in-law.
  • Total Eclipse of the Plot: Towa and Setsuna were born during a lunar eclipse.
  • Town Girls: Tomboy with Boyish Short Hair Towa is the Butch, Lady of War Setsuna is the Femme, and Moroha is the Neither as she isn't as tomboyish as Towa nor as feminine as Setsuna.

    Towa Higurashi

Voiced by: Sara Matsumoto (Japanese), Erica Mendez (English), Luciana Mauri (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/towa_higurashi.png

The older child of Sesshomaru and a human mother along with her twin sister, Setsuna. Circumstances would befall the twins as Towa is sent into the Reiwa era of Japan, and becomes adopted by Sota, Kagome's little brother, now an adult man. Despite her situation, she becomes Happily Adopted, and gives herself the Higurashi family name.

  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the manga adaptation, Towa openly flirts with women. In the anime she only shows attraction to Riku.
  • Always Identical Twins: Averted with her and Setsuna being fraternal twins. The only part of their appearance they have in common are red streaks in their hair.
  • Apathetic Student: She doesn't seem to view school as important and her only concern when she gets into trouble for fighting is that Sota will scold her. Even the anime opening shows her in class with a bored expression and not trying to listen to the teacher.
  • The Atoner: She feels responsible for Setsuna's situation, thinking that they wouldn't have been separated, and that Setsuna wouldn't have lost her memories had she not let go of her hand during the forest fire years ago.
  • Back from the Dead: As a rule of thumb if you are part of Sesshomaru's family or associated with him, she dies a spiritual death after trying to save her father. The result destroys her soul, and Akuru brings her back to life by reversing her death.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: She wears a white suit as her main outfit and has no problem kicking ass while wearing it. Apparently part of the reason why she wears it is that she feels that it's easier to kick said ass in it than in girl clothes.
  • Badass in Distress: The opening of episode one has her hands tied, though it's implied she was captured by choice.
  • Battle Aura: Her aura is a light blue energy which forms when she is angry. Her Super Mode forms the dog demon in the manifestation of her father's true form.
  • Bifauxnen: Her Boyish Short Hair and tendency to wear masculine clothing makes her look very androgynous.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Towa is arguably the nicest and most pure hearted of the three Yashahimes, with her kindness being stated to be as a result of the Reiwa Era making her "soft". But, she's probably the most powerful of them too. Most of the time she is happy and relaxed, but when she meets Homura, who started the forest fire in which she and her sister almost perished, she becomes berserk.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Whether it's her adopted sister Mei or her younger twin Setsuna, if she sees them in danger she'll jump right in to help them.
  • Blood Knight: In the manga, she loves a good fight, which bleeds through in both time periods.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has short hair as part of her Bifauxnen appearance.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Like her uncle, Inuyasha, on the new moon she becomes completely human. Interestingly this didn't affect her until she returned to the Feudal Era, causing her to be caught off-guard when it first happened and she nearly ends up killed by an enemy because she can't use her powers suddenly.
  • Bully Hunter: Her fights in the modern age started with her fighting some bullies in elementary school.
  • Bullying a Dragon: She's the dragon in this case where she frequently gets into fights with delinquents in the modern day.
  • Bully Magnet: Justified. More bullies started to come after her ever since she managed to beat one up back in elementary school.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Justified as she was raised by Sota at 4 years old and she calls him Sota Papa. She also refers her real father by his name after having heard of it from Moroha and the Tree of Ages. The latter changes as she gets to get closer to her biological parents near the end.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Averted, with Towa never calling out her Sōryūha when she uses it. Though it's most likely she doesn't know the name of the attack, having simply inherited it from her father.
  • Changed My Jumper: Similar to Kagome before her, nobody in the Feudal Era comments on her modern clothing.
  • Characterization Marches On: The early episodes had her being a No-Nonsense Nemesis when she engages in a fist-fight with modern day delinquents, and was far informal and more masculine. When she returned to the Feudal Era, she starts being very formal, something she did not do in the Reiwa Era. In fact, she acts more feminine even though she has no intention of being feminine.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To Kagome and Inuyasha.
    • While both are time travelers, their backgrounds and personality are different. Kagome was born as an Ordinary High-School Student from the present day who was unaware of the existence of the supernatural until she ended up on the other side of the Bone Eater's Well before deciding to stay in the Feudal Era permanently to marry Inuyasha. Towa is a Half-Human Hybrid who ends up stuck in the future as a child and adopted by the Higurashi's before discovering a way to travel back to her home time. Kagome fought from afar with Sacred Bow and Arrows, Towa fights up close in melee with either her fists or a katana. While Kagome was feminine, hated fighting, and was constantly worried about her school life, Towa is a tomboyish Fight Magnet who is rather apathetic towards school.
    • By ending up in the Modern Era and being Happily Adopted by the Higurashis, she managed to avoid most of the Half-Breed Discrimination Inuyasha suffered for most of his life and growing up to be much more well-mannered and less abrasive without developing the same self-loathing that defined him. Whereas Inuyasha hated Sesshomaru at the start, Towa is nothing but loving to both Mei and Setsuna, even despite the latter's cold disposition towards her.
  • Cool Big Sis: For Mei and Setsuna (though less so in the present in the case of the latter). She's also great with kids in general.
  • Daddy's Girl: She and her adopted father Sota are very close and she clearly loves and considers him as her true father even though they aren't blood-related. She subverts this with her actual father, Sesshomaru, whom she has never met before in her life and only recently heard of him.
  • Death Is Cheap: At the end of season 2, she gives up her life to save Rion and allow her to inhabit her body. However, Rion then departs with Kirinmaru and uses her power to resuscitate Towa.
  • Energy Absorption: Has the ability to absorb yoki.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The camera doing a brief scan over her room shows her room filled with trophies in many different sports, showing she is physically athletic as well as several kendo swords, showing she knows how to fight with a sword. She then reveals the main reason she is a Fight Magnet is due to an incident when she protected someone who was getting bullied in first grade, showing she has a strong desire for justice and cares about protecting others.
  • Expelled from Every Other School: She gets into so many fights, she ends up having to transfer schools a lot. This is mostly due to delinquents she's fought regularly when Sota wants her to have at least a normal day without fighting.
  • Face of a Thug: In the manga, she tends to get very tense and as a result, she ends up looking like a delinquent when it's unintentional on her part.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her reliance on Setsuna and inability to run are this for her. Kohaku states she refuses to run when she needs to. She also tends to attack head-on rather than dodge, which everyone else notices.
  • Fight Magnet: It started when she first fought a bully, then she starts fighting delinquents her age and over.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Ended up centuries into the future and lived there for 10 years, meaning she's this to both eras.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: In episode 5, she is unusually polite once she lands in the Feudal Era on contrast to how she normally acts in the Reiwa Eranote . The fact she uses Keigo and Japanese Honorifics at all are yet another difference between her and her father.
  • Friend to All Children: Being an older sister herself, she's nothing but doting and friendly towards kids. This is also a trope she shares with her father which is after all how he met her mother.
  • Genre Savvy: At the very least, knows enough about time travel and the consequences of leaving stuff from the future in the past, unlike her aunt.
  • Guilt Complex: Develops this after reuniting with Setsuna. Even Setsuna thinks she needs to chill whenever the forest fire is brought up.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Both her and her sister Setsuna are half-demon from their father Sesshomaru and their human mother Rin.
  • Happily Adopted: She was adopted by her paternal aunt Kagome's younger brother Sota in the modern era, and thus names herself Towa Higurashi. Even after meeting her blood parents, this does not change.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: She's the main heroine of the sequel and has an affinity for swords.
  • Hidden Buxom: Despite being 14, she's already shown to have a decent-sized chest. However, she looks flat or at least small-chested due to her choice of clothes.
  • Hot-Blooded: It runs In the Blood after all. Unlike her father's hot-bloodedness, she is far more expressive at it than his quiet version.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Is unaware of her powers from being a half-demon besides her enhanced strength and senses, and when she creates a Laser Blade from the hilt of her broken sword, she's completely clueless about how she did it.
    • Averted with other skills related to her dog demon heritage. She's shown as still having trouble using her sense of smell and detecting demon energy at first.
  • It's All My Fault: She feels this way about Setsuna's current demeanour, blaming herself for having let go of her in the forest fire as kids. Also feels this way about the delinquents holding the Higurashi family hostage, as well as Mei's temporary Demonic Possession
  • Japanese Delinquents: Doesn't have the looks or attitude, but her Fight Magnet tendencies resulting in her in being Expelled from Every Other School, and general apathy to school qualify enough.
  • Jumped at the Call: She quickly decides to leave the modern era where her adoptive family is to go back to the feudal era in order to find the Dream Butterfly and free Setsuna from the curse that makes her unable to sleep.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Uses a katana as her main weapon.
  • The Kirk: She keeps the emotional balance between The Stoic Setsuna and Hot-Blooded Moroha.
  • Lamarck Was Right: Inherited her father's Sōryūha attack.
  • Laser Blade: Summons one made from her demonic energy out of the remains of her broken katana.
    • In Season 2, she does this with the broken Tenseiga, when she brings Setsuna back to life. Totosai takes the blade to repair it afterwards though.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Unlike the anime, it's Towa who forgot her sister Setsuna while the latter still remembers her. But like Setsuna in the anime, she eventually remembers her.
  • Leitmotif: She has her own theme simplely called "Towa's theme". At full power, she shares her theme with her father's.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: She's quite different from her father, being shown to be much more expressive than Sesshomaru ever was, before and after his Character Development. And while Sesshomaru was an Aloof Big Brother who started off hating Inuyasha and held his half-human blood with contempt, Towa absolutely adores both her younger twin Setsuna and adopted human sister Mei which she makes no secret of.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Although she may be more badass and tomboy, Towa has more similarities in her personality to that of her mother Rin. She has a lively personality, is energetic and playable, has a gentle and loving heart, a strong free spirit and a desire to help loved ones, especially with Setsuna, not even minding her attitude just to ask if she was okay.
  • Magical Eye: Her silver Rainbow Pearl is in her left eye.
  • Minor Living Alone: Before she was sucked into the future, she and her sister were living, seemingly by themselves, in the forest. Jaken was watching them, but he kept himself hidden.
  • My Greatest Failure: She has never forgiven herself for letting go of Setsuna's hand and losing sight of her in the forest fire that separated them. She feels terribly guilty when she learns Setsuna got cursed to never sleep in the time they were apart.
  • Mystical White Hair: As a Half-Human Hybrid, Towa got the silver hair from her youkai father.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Setsuna and Moroha's assessment of her. When she first arrives, she was unusually polite around others, including villains. Setsuna even tells her she shouldn't be polite to enemies, especially those that are already dead, like a skeleton army.
  • New Transfer Student: Episode 2 shows her transferring to St. Gabriel's Academy, an all-girls school. Apparently, she's transferred through quite a few schools due to her tendencies to get into fights.
  • The Nose Knows: Has a strong sense of smell just like her father, uncle, and cousin. She can actually smell emotions from that scent.
  • No-Sell: Is immune to demonic venom-type poisons.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Towa is a half-demon who has silver hair and red eyes. However, throughout Inuyasha and Yashahime, half-demons have been consistently shown to have both the hair and eye colors of their demon parent in their normal forms while resembling their human parent during the time they lose their demon powers and traits, so Towa should logically have both silver hair and golden eyes like her father Sesshomaru and like her uncle Inuyasha, a half-demon who is also of dog demon blood. It's likely that Rule of Cool is responsible for Towa's appearance.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Wears her white suit and trousers to school rather than the standard Sailor Fuku uniform. The manga version however has her wear a standard uniform.
  • Only One Name: Like her father and her sister, she only had one name. However, when she was sent to Reiwa Era Japan, she becomes adopted by Sota Higurashi, and thus her name becomes Towa Higurashi.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Towa finds out Homura was responsible for the forest fire that separated her and Setsuna, she loses her shit to the point that even Setsuna is concerned.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Based on the multiple trophies shown in her room, Towa has an interest in sports and has been victorious in many competitions.
  • Phlebotinum-Handling Requirements: Totosai states her original sword is incompatible with with her demonic energy, which requires her to find a suitable sword that can handle it well.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Setsuna. Towa is more emotional, friendly, and easygoing than the serious and aloof Setsuna.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Zig-zagged. When de-powered, her hair grows a little bit and when giving into her demonic rage, her hair grows past her shoulders.
  • Power Parasite: In episode 6, she manages to free the monk Juan from his Demonic Possession by draining the demonic energy of the dead ghost cat out of him via her Laser Blade.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Under the New Moon, Towa gains this appearance as her hair turns black, while she retains her father's pale complexion.
  • Red Baron: Princess Half-Demon.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: She has red eyes, and is someone you would not want to mess with.
  • Refusal of the Call: Refuses the Sacred Tree's request to slay Kirinmaru, balking at the explanation that doing so would also require killing Sesshomaru, her father.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Her being Setsuna's sister and is a lot more obvious when she becomes fully human aa her hair turns black and grows a few inches longer.
    • Towa being Rin's daughter is also more obvious when she's human and when she awakens her full power as they share a similar hair texture, which is more visible when Towa doesn't have it short. Kaede even lampshades Towa's resemblance to her mother in Episode 21 when she sees the former's appearance under the New Moon.
  • Super-Hearing: From what can be shown, Towa has really good hearing as demonstrated in episode one where her sister and cousin charge in to rescue her while beating up the local lord's warriors effortlessly.
  • Super Mode: Her full power form makes her look like a female version of Sesshomaru with long hair and the crescent moon forming on her forehead while using Twin Souryuha, a more powerful version of her first version as well as a powerful Battle Aura in a form of her her father's true dog youkai form. She attains this form when Setsuna is killed by Kirinmaru.
  • Sword Beam: She can generate her own, dragon-shaped one similar to Moroha's, but colored blue. Clearly a nod to her father's Souryuha/Dragon Strike. She has a more powerful twin version once she awakens her Super Mode
  • Sympathy for the Devil: She feels sorry for the demons her sister and cousin slay, which Setsuna disapproves of.
  • Tell Me About My Father: In the manga, Towa wanted to know about her parents after her return to the Feudal Era. Kaede obliges, and goes into detail over the history of their family.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Towa's name means "eternity", which is meant to complement Setsuna's name which means "moment". This is because their names together mean "eternal moment". As in making the moment that is Rin's life, for someone like Sesshomaru, become eternal.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: Towa has a hard time finishing her opponents off, even at her most angry she just can't bring herself to kill them. The more human the demon looks and acts the worst it is. The one demon she absolutely wanted dead is Homura, who was responsible for the forest fire when she was 4. She was so angry, she was out for his blood, and her personal hatred made her very reckless as a result.
  • Tomboy: She grows up choosing to be masculine, as shown with her choice of clothing, Boyish Short Hair, various sports trophies, and workout equipment in her room. Sota and Mei however do want her to at least be a bit more feminine.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Mei's girly girl. This becomes a problem when Towa prefers to be masculine, but Mei wants her to be more girly.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite her tough front and appearance, she seems to adore stuffed animals. She also enjoys listening to idols and even fangirls when she sees a monk who looks like a bald version of an idol from the Reiwa Era.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Episode 7 shows that she's come a long way from where she was at the beginning of the series.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She loves apples.
  • Trapped in the Past: Inverted as she ended up stuck in the future when she got separated from her sister.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Her full power is unleashed when Setsuna is killed by Kirinmaru.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Although she improves rapidly, at the start of the series she has no idea how to use her demonic powers, and some moments, like destroying Root Head and draining the ghost cat's demonic energy, imply she might be the most powerful of the main trio.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Goes through this when fighting Homura after the latter admits to being responsible for starting the forest fire that resulted in her and Setsuna being separated 10 years ago.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Whenever she faces a demon, she develops this mindset whenever she faces one that's capable of emotions and tries to sympathize with them. Setsuna and Moroha however do get agitated by this due to the "kill or be killed" nature of the Feudal Era, with Setsuna trying to get her to get over it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She stupidly relinquishes her silver Rainbow Pearl to Riku after learning he works for Kirinmaru but decided to do so because she thought of him as her friend. Setsuna and Moroha criticize her for her dumb move before she goes Oh, Crap! for it.
  • Willfully Weak: She deliberately holds back most of her real strength when she gets into fights. Not that she wants to be weak, but that she is a half-demon, and going all-out could cripple her would-be attackers or worse.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Her Laser Blade is formed from the broken hilt of her sword, which snapped when she tried to attack Mistress Three-Eyes with it.
  • Younger Than They Look: She is 14, but looks 17 or 18 years old. This is further reinforced by her being 160 cm.

    Setsuna

Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (Japanese), Kira Buckland (English), Constanza Faraggi (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/setsuna_3.png

The second daughter of Sesshomaru and a human mother, and Towa's younger twin sister. The girls grew up in a forest alone until a forest fire would separate the two, with Towa being sent into Reiwa Era Japan and leaving her alone. Years pass and she grows up fighting demons under the tutalege of Kohaku, her father's former traveling companion. She is soon reunited with her long-lost older sister, but doesn't remember who she is, making Towa's goal to recover her childhood memories.

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade:
    • The manga version still remembers Towa but the latter forgot about her. Then it's revealed the Dream Butterfly makes her feel sadness and anger, and takes away her joy.
    • In the manga, Setsuna as a child, while growing up with Moroha as company, was a timid child who feared her own nature as a half-demon and wished she could be a human. This puts a new feeling of self-doubt and shame that Setsuna in the anime, even as a child, didn't hold.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Setsuna gains white hair in the manga whenever her demon blood is fully unleashed.
  • Adaptational Wimp: In the manga, Setsuna is revealed to have been very timid as a child and needing Moroha's help to fend off bullies and the like. This was not the case in the anime, in which Setsuna wasn't particularly shy or timid as a child.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Inverted. She refuses to acknowledge Towa as her older twin sister since she can't even remember her, acting very cold and antagonistic towards her despite Towa being very protective of her. Eventually starts to warm up to her, though.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Tall, beautiful, dark-haired, dark clothing and stoic. She fits.
  • Always Identical Twins: Averted with her and Towa being fraternal twins. The only part of their appearance they have in common are red streaks in their hair.
  • Back from the Dead: In Season 2, after being killed off by Kirinmaru.
  • The Berserker: Similar to her uncle, when her demon blood riles up inside of her, she goes absolutely berserk, unable to tell friend from foe. This necessitated in Miroku in sealing her higher demonic powers to prevent her from harming anyone else.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: After having gone full-demon, her arm creates an energy blade out of her blood. She is able to use her armblade at will in combat.
  • Bloody Murder: Her armblade is made by her own blood.
  • Blow You Away: Her Senpujin/Cyclone Burst which has her create a small cyclone.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Her demon slayer armor is blue and she's one of the main heroes in the sequel.
  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Is shown in this pose in the series' main poster.
  • Broken Bird: She was a Cheerful Child in Towa's memories. When they meet again, Setsuna has become cold and unapproachable after she had to grow up without her sister.
  • Brutal Honesty: Her honesty can be very harsh.
  • Cheerful Child: She was a lot happier and more emotive as a child, justified as she was 4 at the time.
  • Childhood Friends: Implied to be one with Hisui, having been raised by Kohaku and the two both joining the Demon Slayer corp. She is considerably, "nicer" to Hisui than she is to Towa and Moroha.
  • Comically Serious: While noticably stoic like her father, Setsuna has moments where her serious attitude is used for comedy, sometimes being the straight woman to Moroha's Genki Girl or in some more comedic moments.
    • When her demon powers are sealed during the new moon, she with complete seriousness arranges for the demon slayers to set up traps for the demons that will come after her...that wouldn't look out of place in a Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner episode. Except that they all work perfectly.
  • Cultured Badass: A trained Demon Slayer with demonic powers who quickly learned how to play the violin after a few days in the modern age.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Doesn't really mind her status as The Insomniac due to the Dream Butterfly, since she can't be put to sleep with drugs or demon powers, and it allows her to keep awake and alert all times in a dangerous world. It also prevents her losing her demon powers and reverting to human on new moons like other half-demons.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Her wit is as dry as her father's.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Her interactions with Towa and Moroha slowly melt away her cold exterior.
  • Demon Slaying: Setsuna was raised by Kohaku as a demon slayer.
  • Disability Immunity: Due to having her dreams eaten by the Dream Butterfly, Yotsume's dream inducing attack had no effect on her. She's also immune to the effects of the new moon on half-demons, which she wasn't even aware of until it affected Towa. Later subverted in season 2.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: Masters the violin in just a couple of days and is proclaimed to be a prodigy that comes only once every 500 years by Moe, herself a world-class violinist. Meanwhile, her more reserved, ladylike demeanor, compared to Towa and Moroha (as well as the gorgeous blue dress the Higurashi's give her) fills out the "Elegant" bit.
  • Eye Twitch: Does a brief, very subtle one when Moroha explains her half-demon nature.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Has a single pauldron over her left shoulder while her right shoulder has a mokomoko, similar to her father's.
  • Forced Sleep: She can put people to sleep with the resting moth's powder.
  • Half-Breed Angst: Implied to have this seeing that she immediately attacked Moroha for bringing up her half-demon status, and it's implied to be because of the fact that she's not as strong as a full demon as a result of it.
    • Episode 13 gives more insight into this. Setsuna cannot use the abilities she inherited from her father, such as his poisonous blood, without the risk of losing herself to her demonic side.
    • Episode 20 reveals she finds out about this after coming across Shiori's village.
    • The manga takes the implied and makes the trope outright true when it is shown in a flashback that Setsuna was afraid of her demon side to the point of wanting to be human.
  • Happily Adopted: She was adopted by Kaede along with Moroha in the manga.
  • Heavy Sleeper: In an episode where Setsuna is rendered human for a while, she sleeps while the Demon Slayers protect her from demons that want her dead. The entire time, the Demon Slayers use various traps Setsuna set in place and despite the noise, not once does she wake up.
  • Hidden Depths: In episode 4, Moe notes that she is really good at playing the violin to the point of calling her a once-every five hundred years prodigy.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Is much nicer than her stoic demeanor may beget, just like her father. Shown as early as how she saves Mei from her Demonic Possession, and then her brief rapport with Moe who taught her to play the violin, which she appreciates.
  • The Insomniac: As a result of having her dreams eaten by the Dream Butterfly, she can't sleep. Later subverted in season 2, when her Butterfly is destroyed and she is able to sleep once again.
  • Instant Expert: Becomes very good at playing the violin after only spending a few days in the modern era under Moe's instruction. Moe declares her a prodigy for this. Her mastery of her demon powers is also notable since she was trained by regular humans, who couldn't have possible known how to train her in them.
  • It's All My Fault: Episode 37 reveals that she blamed herself for not being able to keep up with Towa during the forest fire before they were separated.
  • It Was a Gift: Moe gives her a violin to take back to the Feudal Era. Setsuna clearly likes it, declaring that she'll play it at night, since she can't sleep.
  • Lady of War: Her mokomoko, choice of weapon, and skills at the violin all emphasize her grace and deadliness.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia:
    • As a result of having her dreams eaten by the Dream Butterfly, she lost her memories of her childhood and of Towa. It's later revealed that her mother Rin had these memories sealed away in order to spare her from the grief of losing her sister. She gets them back in episode 37.
    • This is inverted in the manga as it's Towa who's forgotten about her, and she still remembers Towa.
  • Leitmotif: She has three: Setsuna's theme, a violin lullably theme, and a shared one with her father's when her demonic blood takes control.
    • The violin theme in particular is the same tune that her mother, Rin, used to sing when she was pregnant with the twins.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Where her father is the older sibling and had an antagonistic relationship with her half-uncle at first, Setsuna at best is a Tsundere, and the younger sibling. While she and Towa do clash, it's more out of duty and Setsuna has no intention of making friends or bond with a sister she doesn't know or remember about, even though Towa wants to re-bond with her sister. She does eventually loosen up more, but still keeps on edge due to literal lack of sleep. The one thing that ultimately separates them both is that Sesshomaru has pride in his abilities as a full-blooded demon whereas Setsuna has Half-Breed Angst due to being half-demon. Luckily, she was able to loosen up once her memories are restored.
  • Long-Lost Relative: She and her twin sister Towa got separated during a fire at the forest they lived in and Towa got transported to the modern era before she could find Setsuna. 10 years later, they meet again when Setsuna gets transported to the present too, but she doesn't recognize Towa as her long-lost sister. Also technically this to her cousin Moroha since the two apparently never met prior to the events of the series and are unaware of their relationship.
  • Luminescent Blush: Does this briefly in episode 4 when Moe praises her skills with a violin.
  • Magical Eye: Her golden Rainbow Pearl is in her right eye.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: Her purple eyes are possibly the only indication of her Half-Human Hybrid status. When she gets depowered during the new moon her eyes turn brown.
  • Minor Living Alone: Like her sister, she was living in the woods, no parents in sight, before the forest fire that separated them. Jaken was watching them, but he kept himself hidden.
  • Naginatas Are Feminine: Being the more feminine twin, she wields a naginata, which also contrasts her with her sister Towa who uses a katana.
  • No-Sell: Whereas her sister has an immunity to venom-based demonic poisons, she has a similar immunity to demonically tainted water.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Setsuna is a half-demon who has dark brown hair and purple eyes. However, throughout Inuyasha and Yashahime, half-demons have been consistently shown to have both the hair and eye colors of their demon parent in their normal forms while resembling their human parent during the time they lose their demon powers and traits, so Setsuna should logically have both silver hair and golden eyes like her father Sesshomaru and like her uncle Inuyasha, a half-demon who is also of dog demon blood. It's likely that Rule of Cool is responsible for Setsuna's appearance.
  • Not So Stoic: Her usually stoic demeanour can break at times and have her make the similar comical expressions as her sister and cousin.
    • In episode 4, where in a matter of minutes she gives a Luminescent Blush when Moe praises her violin skills, gives a comical Death Glare to Moroha with a Cross-Popping Veins appearing on her raised fist, before giving a facial expression that just radiates a Flat "What" at her cousin's antics.
    • Smiles when Moe gives her a violin to take back to the Feudal Era, and when its sucked into the time corridor she gives an Oh, Crap! expression before jumping right into the corridor to get it. When Moroha's huge bag lands on top of her when they get back to te Feudal Era, she gives a brief surprised expression, before noticing her violin on top and picks it up with visible relief.
    • In episode 11, after the girls defeat the titular Man-Eating Swamp, Towa and Moroha high-five each other while saying "Yay!". Towa turns to Setsuna, who puts on a cheerful expression of her own and almost returns the high-five before catching herself, looking embarrassed. She then dismisses Towa as "annoying".
    • She gives a rather comical mixture of surprise and embarrassment when Kohaku points out to her that she had unknowingly cut down an entire field of bamboo in episode 33.
    • In episode 37, when she has her childhood memories restored and fully reconciles with Towa, she openly weeps with her sister as the two embrace. She also sheds happy tears at seeing Moroha reunite with her parents.
  • Oblivious to Love: Is unaware that Hisui likes her, although it's possible she only views him as a teammate/coworker for demon slaying.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Just like her father, Setsuna's default expression is an aloof frown.
  • Poisonous Person: Inherited her father's ability to channel poison through her claws. But as a half demon, she risks being taken over by her demonic side when she uses it, which is why she had Miroku seal her abilities.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Towa. Setsuna is coolheaded, distant, and rarely lets herself show she cares for others while Towa is more friendly, driven by her emotions, and is very open about how much she wants to protect her family.
  • Power Limiter: Had Miroku place a seal on her Poisonous Person abilities to keep from being taken over by her demonic side.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Inverted. After getting her Dream Butterfly cut, thus allowing her to experience the effects of the New Moon for the first time in a decade, her hair grows to down to her feet.
  • Pretty in Mink: Has a large fur over her right shoulder similar to her father Sesshomaru's, though it splits in two tails near the end. Unlike her father and paternal grandfather's, it isn't part of her body.
  • Refusal of the Call: Refuses the Sacred Tree's request to slay Kirinmaru.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: The Sword Beams she fires from her naginata take the form of animals like swallows.
  • Shared Family Quirks:
    • Setsuna inherited her father's traits, such as pride, his deadpan stoic demeanor, No-Nonsense Nemesis tendencies, and having a mokomoko-sama on her right shoulder. When reuniting with Towa, she immediately gets into a fight with her, just as her father and uncle did, though not quite as vitriolic.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely:
    • Dresses in a beautiful blue dress while playing the violin in episode 4, even puts on some heels. Just don't tell her about it.
    • Happens again in season two where she ends up having to take the place of the local daimyo's daughter, requiring her to be dressed up in make-up and a fancy kimono.
  • Sickly Green Glow: When fully consumed by her demonic powers, she emits a bright green aura.
  • The Sleepless: Due to an encounter with the Dream Butterfly, Setsuna is unable to fall asleep or dream. There don't seem to be many side-effects from this, however. Later subverted when she has her butterfly cut, and is able to sleep once more.
  • The Spock: She's the calm and cool-headed one of the main trio.
  • The Stoic: She takes after her father in the lack of facial expressions aspect.
  • The Strategist: Compared to Moroha's straightforward Attack! Attack! Attack! approach, Setsuna takes note of her opponents and tries to form strategies. Most likely a result of her growing up with and being trained by the Demon Slayers. In one episode where she becomes human, she devises several strategies for the Demon Slayers to use while she sleeps in case demons come to attack. Each one works perfectly.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Replace her black hair with white, you got a dead ringer for Sesshomaru, especially when you take their similar personalities into account.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She seems cold and distant on the outside, especially to her estranged twin sister. That said, she's capable of showing outward emotion than her father ever was and allows herself to smile around people she trusts.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Setsuna's name means "moment", which is meant to complement Towa's name which means "eternity". As in making the moment that is Rin's life, for someone like Sesshomaru, become eternal.
  • Think Nothing of It: Says this to the Higurashi family when they thank her for saving them from the three-eyed centipede.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Downplayed; like Sango, Setsuna pulls her long hair back into a ponytail so it doesn't get in the way when fighting and slaying demons, but she's still the most graceful and ladylike of the main trio.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: While she had her moments throughout season 1, the second season is when her kinder side really starts to show, especially after getting her Dream Butterfly severed.
  • True Blue Femininity: The most graceful and ladylike of the trio (aside from her vocabulary in the Japanese version which is mostly masculine aside from her choice of pronoun) and wears blue, both in her demon slayer armor, and the dress Moe gave her.
  • Tsundere: She acts like a Harsh (Tsun) type towards Towa, her long-lost twin sister. Since Setsuna can't remember her, she's instantly hostile to Towa and refuses to believe they're sisters. Even though Towa is trying to be a good sister, Setsuna keeps her distance and gets annoyed by Towa's naivety and insistence to restore her ability to sleep. Still, it's clear Setsuna doesn't hate being around Towa and gets worried when her sister is injured.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She used to be a very sweet and gentle kid. But the 10 years she has been on her own has made her much colder.
  • Winged Humanoid: After the losing the seal on her demon powers courtesy of Zero, she sprouts purple butterfly wings that emit demon energy similar to that of the Dream Butterfly.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: When Mei ends up possessed by the Hitokon, she claims she'll cut it out of her at first, only to instead put her into Forced Sleep then administer an antidote to expel and kill the demon from her body.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Her response in the finale to finding out that Riku revived from a Disney Death thanks to a fragment of him being on Towa when she was revived from her own is absolutely incredulous confusion, and probably one of the only comedic times she breaks her stoicism.
  • Younger Than They Look: Is 14 like Towa and Moroha, but her wardrobe, height (at 160 cm), voice, and stoic disposition could let her pass for a few years older.

    Moroha

Voiced by: Azusa Tadokoro (Japanese), Morgan Berry (English), Agostina Longo (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moroha.png

The daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome. She grew up by herself and the only memento of her parents is her father's cloak of the Fire-Rat and her mother's sacred powers. However, she ends up in debt for reasons that aren't revealed until late in the first season, turning her into a bounty hunter.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Can use her father's Sankon Tessō attack. Usually uses this when in her Beniyasha form when she can one-shot opponents with it. Tokotsu claims it's what she used to sever his body from his head.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the manga, her hair turns white when she turns into Beniyaha, making her look like a female version of her father.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the manga, it's Moroha who has a personal interest in finding the Dream Butterfly, since she was adopted along with Setsuna by Kaede.
  • Age Lift: In the anime, the twins were born when Kagome was a few weeks pregnant. In the manga adaptation, Moroha was already born when Rin was still pregnant.
  • Anti-Hero: Moroha is quite rambunctiously destructive even while being firmly a member of the protagonist trio and is generally quite interested in killing any demon or target she's sent after to pay off the debt she owes.
  • Attack Reflector: Her Crimson Backlash Wave, which is similar to her father's Backlash Wave, but used her Kouryuha instead of the Wind Scar (which she can't do).
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The rouge she uses to turn into her "Beniyasha" form. It gives her a great boost in demonic powers, but only lasts roughly a minute before leaving her so exhausted she ends up passed out for a day. In addition, she can go berserk while in this form, thus prone to attacking her allies if they get too close.
  • Badass Adorable: Very energetic and extremely deadly.
  • Batman Gambit: In Episode 12 she acts like she's going to use her rogue in order to get Myoga, who loves the taste of her blood in that form, to appear so she can ask him what's wrong with Towa.
  • Blessed with Suck: Apparently, overuse of her Beniyasha form will result in her eventually being taken over by her demon blood, which is why Kagome sealed it with the requirement of using her grandmother's rouge.
  • Bloody Murder: She can perform her father's Blades of Blood attack.
  • Bounty Hunter: She makes a living (or at least tries to) by selling parts from demons she slays.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: She uses a demon blade and a bow, both of the signature weapons of her parents.
  • Butt-Monkey: She has the misfortune of having bad luck interfering with her paying her debts or when the twins are off to battle, she is either left behind, at the receiving end of a Curb-Stomp Battle, or her targets have No Body Left Behind. And she gets taunted for it when this happens.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Has no trouble using sneaky tricks in battle, like hiding purification salt in her mouth for when a demon who rips people's skeletons out of their mouths tries to use that trick on her.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Because of the unique properties of her parents, Moroha has her father's demon powers alongside her mother's spiritual power in addition to their respective weapons.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: She undoubtedly contrasts both of her parents, even personalty-wise:
    • Unlike her father, Moroha spent her carefree life by her lonesome by always hunting demons for money. Inuyasha simply spent his life just trying to survive after his mother passed away. Her father became a Jerkass as a result of his Half-Breed Discrimination while Moroha doesn't seem to know or care that she is a quarter demon and three-quarters human. Another is that she remains a Genki Girl after meeting her half-cousins while Inuyasha at his best is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
    • Very unlike her mother, she doesn't possess the teenage angst her mother went through when she was 15. Though this is due to living in Feudal Era Japan, Moroha only cares about living her life while Kagome was worried about her education. Kagome chose to live the rest of her life in the Feudal Era while Moroha shows amazement of Reiwa Era Japan, such as taking a modern bath. She refers to her own era as "the boring era" when realizing she and her cousins will have to return to it.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She has prominent fangs because of her dog demon blood. They also suit her energetic character.
  • Daddy's Girl: Very much so once she and Inuyasha properly reunite. Despite a pretty awkward start where they both have no clue how to approach each other, as soon as Inuyasha hugs her, she breaks down in his arms and spends the rest of her time sleeping either in his lap or draped over his back. He's more than happy to hold her.
  • Earthy Barefoot Character: She goes barefoot like her father, but she does have some wrappings around her lower legs. In the third end credits sequence, Moroha wears era-appropriate clothing, including sneakers. Her lack of footwear can be written off as dressing like the Koga clan which raised her, demons that wear only foot wrappings at most.
  • Exploited Immunity: Since she is part human and has sacred power, she is unaffected by purification salt, allowing her to use it as a weapon against demons.
  • Eye Color Change: Her eye color changes from brown to amber similar to her father and uncle's when she is in her "Beniyasha" demon form.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: She has Kagome's eyes. This is how Kagome's mother can tell Moroha is her granddaughter.
  • Genetic Memory: Her "Beniyasha" form apparently works by awakening the ones she inherited from her paternal grandfather. Myoga even says that her blood tastes just like his did in that form.
  • Genki Girl: She is a very energetic girl.
  • Hates Being Alone: She has been alone pretty much just after she was born, so when she finds her cousins she gets upset when they don't want to travel with her on a bounty hunting mission.
  • Hot-Blooded: A trait she shares with her father and deceased grandfather. She's the one most excited at the time of a fight.
  • Hour of Power: Moroha can awaken her demon blood by putting on the rouge her grandfather gave her grandmother, but doing so will burn away her demon energy quickly and render her unconscious for about a day afterwards. She claims to have surpassed that issue in season 2, but it's all talk.
  • Hybrid Power: Being only 1/4 demon she has less demonic power than her 1/2-demon cousins, but makes up the difference with sacred power inherited from her mother. Also, unlike her father and cousins, she is apparently immune from the new moon that negates their demon powers and turns them fully human once a month.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She casually walks around Towa's apartment with only a towel on her shoulders, unaware that it's a problem especially when her uncle is in the room.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Like her father, most of the physical comedy is aimed at her.
  • Irony:
    • Her half-uncle Sesshomaru often antagonizes her father because of his possession of the Tessaiga, but immediately quits doing so after he acquires a powerful sword of his own. Moroha is interested in getting her half-cousin Setsuna's naginata, the Kanemitsu no Tomoe, but in a more competitive, playful manner than their fathers' former antagonism.
    • Despite being only 1/4th Dog Demon to her cousin's 1/2, she is the most dog-like of the three.
    • She is referred to as "Princess Half-Demon" but is actually just a quarter demon.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she can be pretty crass, she's very friendly and outgoing.
  • Kiddie Kid:
    • For a 14-year-old girl, Moroha often behaves very childish and immature.
  • Large Ham: Very much so when she's hyping up her Beniyasha form.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: As noted by Setsuna, she charges in head-first at her enemies, but would leave herself open for an attack. Just like her father. Somewhat subverted in that she's actually quite intelligent and observant, she just likes getting into the action.
  • Leitmotif: Moroha's theme.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: In episode 3 after taking a bath for the first time then going to sleep.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When the threshold is crossed, Moroha will use her clamshell of rouge to become Beniyasha, which makes her stronger, and uses other abilities she normally doesn't use. Though she will fall asleep for a whole day once it's used up.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son:
    • Where her father is a Tsundere and angsts about his heritage, Moroha is a Genki Girl who doesn't seem to be hung up about her own uneven bloodline. This may be due to the fact that she's not subjected to Half-Breed Discrimination, or at least doesn't care for it.
    • She also had the exact opposite reaction that her mother had when given the mummified kappa paw.
    • While she emerges naked out of the bath just like her dad did, Inuyasha had a horrified reaction to taking a bath while Moroha greatly enjoyed it, likely a trait from her mother instead.
  • Lots of Luggage: After her short visit to the modern era, Moroha goes back to her time period with a huge backpack filled with literally everything she could get her claws on using Sota's credit card, including a bike.
  • The McCoy: She's the most enthusiastic and excitable one of the main trio.
  • Minor Living Alone: No signs of parental supervision, and Kohaku doesn't seem to know who she is, implying that something happened to Kagome and Inuyasha.
  • Ms. Exposition: Explains to Towa that she and Setsuna are half-demons, and who their father is.
  • Mundane Luxury: She takes a bath in Towa's apartment and says it is amazing because she never bathed with hot water before.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: Once she arrives in the modern world, everything amazes her. So much that she bought so much stuff with Sota's credit card and literally jams her purchases, including a bicycle in her overtly stuffed bag.
  • My Greatest Failure: During a fight against a mob, she was far too scared to attack, and thus activated "Beniyasha" to deal with it. However, while going berserk, she scars her master Yawaragi and to protect her after she passes out, Yawaragi puts on a cursed piece of armor known as the Armor of the Iron Rat to save her. She feels very guilty about this afterwards.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She's absolutely overjoyed when her great-grandfather gives her a mummified kappa paw as a good luck charm and is quite possibly the only one in the family who actually would be, her mother sure wasn't.
  • The Nose Knows: She has a good sense of smell (a trait that she shares with her paternal family), which she demonstrates by smelling out the demon owl in disguise. She's even able to tell that Towa and Setsuna are Sesshomaru's daughters, apparently entirely by scent.
    • Despite not having any recollection of her parents, when she's absorbed in the Black Pearl along with her cousins and finally meets Inuyasha and Kagome, she instantly recognizes her mother's scent upon being hugged.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: She inherited her paternal grandmother's rouge seashell. Her mother Kagome gave it to a baby Moroha before sending her away with Hachi before she and Inuyasha faced some enemies and went missing.
  • Paper Talisman: In order to create barriers she has Myoga write shinto talismans while she is the one who actually charges them with spiritual power.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Stands at 150 cm.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Despite being a Bounty Hunter who goes after high bounties, it's a Running Gag that something usually happens that causes her to not get the pay out, such as the body of the target being completely destroyed.
  • Power Limiter: Much like Miroku did for Setsuna, Kagome placed a sacred seal on Moroha when she was a baby that prevents her demon blood from awakening to devour her soul, unlike her cousins however she has her rouge which can forcibly activate her transformation.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: She goes barefoot like her father, but she does have some wrappings around her lower legs. In the third end credits sequence, Moroha wears era-appropriate clothing, including sneakers. Her lack of footwear can be written off as dressing like the Koga clan which raised her, demons that wear only foot wrappings at most.
  • Rain of Arrows: Her Heavenly Arrow Rain has her fire off a single arrow that then transforms into several dozen of sacred arrows before descending on her targets.
  • Raised by Wolves: It's later revealed that Koga's wolf clan took her in as an infant after Inuyasha and Kagome disappeared.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Says this to a group of seniors from the modern era in episode 4, claiming she'd technically count as this since she must be about 450 years older than them since she was born in the Sengoku Era. They just think she's joking.
  • Red Is Heroic: She wears an outfit identical to her father's Red Robe of the Fire-Rat and is one of the main heroes in the sequel. Is also in possession of the red Rainbow Pearl.
  • Sacred Bow and Arrows: She can use spiritual power to purify demons with her bow and arrows, just like her mother.
  • Salt Solution: In keeping with Shinto tradition, Moroha can use salt as a purification agent when fighting yokai due to the spiritual powers she inherited from Kagome.
  • Self-Harm: While Inuyasha generally used his Blades of Blood attack by drawing from an already open wound, Moroha uses hers by straight-up clawing her own arm open.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Like her father, she's a reckless, Hot-Blooded warrior, but like her mother is also a friendly and intelligent Nice Girl.
  • Signature Headgear: Moroha ties her hair with a red ribbon that pokes out from the top of her head, evoking the distinct shape of her fathers' ears.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Moroha is definitely her father's daughter, with the looser restrictions on language letting her get away with remarking "Oh, shit" in surprise at Yotsume's transformation. It's not the only time she uses the word either, in comparison to her cousins who use much lighter profanity and far less frequently.
  • Smarter Than You Look:
    • Moroha seems like your usual carefree Hot-Blooded moron, but she is shown to be quite intuitive, intelligent, and extremely knowledgeable with weapons and demons. She's easily able to tell that Towa and Setsuna are not only powerful half-demons but even who their father is. She is also able to deduce why Setsuna lost her memories and that she is now cursed, and that Towa's sword was a counterfeit just by examining it briefly, and impressively she was able to discover and figure out how to use her uncle's credit card on her own after being in the modern era for just a few days.
    • She is a skilled sword smith.
    • When a Tree Demon who knows all states he won't tell a half demon anything, she gets him to tell her and her friends everything they need to know through a combination of sweet talk and reverse psychology. He didn't even realize he did until after they started to leave.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks exactly like a girl version of her father's human form and with her hair down looks just like a wilder version of her mother.
  • Super Mode: Her Beniyasha form is this when she needs to have a quicker power up. However, it lasts an hour before she falls asleep for a full day. She gains a stronger form when her grandfather forms her Battle Aura.
  • Super-Senses: On top of having an inu youkai's sensitive nose, she apparently also has some measure of telescopic vision, one that also lets her "see" demons through walls when sniping them with her sacred arrows.
  • Sword Beam: Her Kouryuha/Red Dragon Wave, which fires a dragon shaped blast of demonic energy. First used in episode 2 to cancel out Setsuna's Cyclone Burst when fighting the three-eyed centipede yōkai.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Averted. Pretty much every time she breaks out her rouge and goes on a speech about how this will transform into her Beniyasha form, expect the enemy to usually attack her.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She wears her hair in a ponytail held back by a red ribbon. Much like her father, Moroha is a rough and Hot-Blooded fighter.
  • Tomboyish Voice: She has a raspy voice and fittingly, is a Hot-Blooded tomboy.
  • Too Awesome to Use: Averted with her Beniyasha form. Despite only giving her a minute of power and then knocking her out for a day, she seems to look for any opportunity to use it.
  • Uneven Hybrid: Unlike her Half-Human Hybrid cousins, her heritage is more uneven; she's three-quarters human and one-quarter demon, thanks to her father being a half-demon and her mother being fully human.
  • Work Off the Debt: Her bounty hunting is because she was sold by her master. Thus Jyubei has her work to pay it off.

The son of Miroku and Sango and younger brother of Kin’u and Gyokuto.

  • Ancestral Weapon: He inherited Hiraikotsu from his mother. Since he has yet to bond with the weapon as much as his mother, he is not able to use its Anti-Regeneration powers.
  • Badass Bookworm: His father taught him at a young age due to wanting him to be well-educated when he grows up. This allows him to teach Setsuna how to write a poem.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: His family treats him as the baby of the family even though he is almost a full grown adult.
  • Demon Slaying: He follows his parents' footsteps in defeating demons posing a threat to humans under the tutelage of his uncle Kohaku.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father had been out of his life and he had been with his sisters and mother only. His father was off by himself to attain divine power in a 1000-day training regime. This causes resentment between him and his father despite his father feeling weak and useless without his Wind Tunnel since Naraku's defeat. He eventually lets it go when his father cures him of his accidental poisoning.
  • Family Theme Naming: Like his mother Sango and his uncle Kohaku, Hisui has the name of a gemstone. Sango means coral, Kohaku means amber, and Hisui means jade.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Hisui was introduced in the epilogue of the original series where he had just been born.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son:
    • He keeps a serious disposition, especially around with Setsuna, whereas his father often sexually harassed his mother when they were teenagers. Though his father immediately stopped after he got married to her.
    • Unlike his sisters, he does not inherit his father's tendency to manipulate people to get what he wants, as his Nice Guy nature always tries to help those in need.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: Averted, his theme naming matches his mother's and he follows in his maternal uncle's footsteps and uses his mother's weapon, lacking the dharma power of his father.
  • Nice Guy: When he's not on the job, he is a good fellow to hang around. Unfortunately, his sisters can easily manipulate him for this.
  • Oblivious to Love: Setsuna thinks he is when Aiya requests that Setsuna delivers a love letter to him. He actually likes Setsuna better.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He is near identical to his father Miroku, although his hair color is closer to Sango's. He looks even more like his father with his hair down.

Kin'u
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gyokuto27s_official_design.jpg
Gyokuto

The twin daughters of Miroku and Sango and older sisters of Hisui.

  • Always Identical Twins: They have the same faces and hairstyles.
  • The Blacksmith: Gyokuto learned from Sango how to create and maintain the equipment of Demon Slayers, and her skills are well renowned even to senior Demon Slayers from the far north.
  • Cheerful Child: As children, they always look very happy.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Fans have accused Sunrise of being lazy since they don't even bothered to change the twins' hairstyles, Gyokuto even still wears the same outfit design.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Unlike Hisui who followed in the footsteps of their mother to become a Demon Slayer, Kin'u inherited Miroku's dharma power and became a nun, one capable of sealing Setsuna's blood in her father's place.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: As children, they are only differentiated by the color of their kimonos; Kin'u wears a green one and Gyokuto wears a pink one. As adults, Gyokuto wears pink and has a ponytail while Kin'u wears a traditional buddhist nun outfit.
  • In-Series Nickname: They're collectively called "Kin-Gyo" by their family and friends.
  • Jacob and Esau: The twins were each tutored personally by their parents to take over their family businesses, leaving Hisui feeling as though he didn't really have a role until he apprenticed under his uncle.
  • Last Episode, New Character: They were originally introduced in the Distant Finale of the original series.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Kin'u inherits her father's smooth talker ways, something Hisui knows from experience.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Like how their father can be manipulative in his younger days, the twins inherits this trait from Miroku.
  • Master Poisoner: Gyokuto is not a demon slayer, but she learned from her mother how to create the equipment they use including poison powder, which she will happily throw at enemies.
  • Muggle: Gyokuto appears to be fairly ordinary compared to her twin sister who is a Buddhist Nun and her brother who is a Demon Slayer.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: They do this in unison and the sound even causes Hisui to visibly cringe.
  • Paper Talisman: Kin'u can throw paper talismans filled with purification power that can slice through yokai like blades.
  • Single-Minded Twins: As children they would speak and act in unison.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: They look exactly like Sango, but small. Even more so when they are both grown up.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Their names translate to "Golden Crow and Jade Hare." Miroku may have named them according to the Chinese idiom "the golden bird of the sun sets in the west, the jade hare of the moon rises in the east." The idiom originates from a phrase in an ancient text.

    Takechiyo

Voiced by: Fairouz Ai (Japanese), Ryan Bartley (English), Mara Campanelli (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takechiyo.png

A young tanuki who accompanies Moroha.

  • Barefoot Cartoon Animal: His outfit doesn't include shoes.
  • Expy Coexistence: He shares the Shippo's short stature and shape-changing powers. However, his position as Jyubei's assistant means that he doesn't get the same "kid brother" treatment that Shippo did.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "bamboo knowledge". Coincidentally, his name was also the childhood name of a Real Life figure usually given the same animal motif: Tokugawa Ieyasu.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Is actually revealed to be a prince in his clan, but was taken in by Jyubei to take care of him.
  • Tanuki: A young one with the ears and tail.

    Jyubei

Voiced by: Tsuyoshi Koyama (Japanese), Arthur Romeo (English), Sidney Cesar (Portuguese)

An older man who's the one who gives out demon bounty hunting jobs to Moroha. Raised Takechiyo since he was a child at Miroku's request.

    Riku

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama (Japanese), Zach Aguilar (English), Jorge Riveros (Latin Spanish)

A mysterious young pirate who has control over water.

  • Ambiguously Evil: He helps the trio from time to time, but he has a hidden agenda of his own by using them to get what he wants.
  • Ambiguously Human: He initially seems to be human, but later, when he's talking about Homura and Tamano, he makes a couple of comments that seem to indicate that he isn't a human, and has seemingly not aged a day since before Towa and Setsuna were born. He claims to be a "doll" rather then a human or a yokai and Zero later reveals that he was created from Kirinmaru's severed horn.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: He is a detachment of Kirinmaru that was created from the latter's severed horn, yet aids Zero, Towa, and Rion in their motives against the latter.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Supposedly serves Kirinmaru, but he killed Kyuki and is secretly gathering the Rainbow Pearls, with hints at a greater agenda.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Confesses his love for Towa before dying.
  • Exact Words: He never steals from women and children. The Kikujumonji katana sword he gave her is not only real, it belonged to a local male lord, which compromises Towa as the thief.
  • Gentleman Thief: Tells Towa he never steals from women and children. This ends up compromising Towa when she is accused of stealing the real Kikujumonji.
  • Hidden Depths: He was apparently abandoned by his master, Kirinmaru by the way he talks about it.
  • Insane Troll Logic: He thinks loving someone means killing them. Because that makes sense.
  • Magical Accessory: Riku's earring appears to be the source of his magical powers.
  • Magical Gesture: Whenever Riku casts a spell, he flicks his earing.
  • Making a Splash: One of the powers his earring grants.
  • Older Than They Look: A flashback to when Towa and Setsuna were born fourteen years ago has him look no different than he does now. He is at least more than 200 when he saw the burning mansion Izayoi gave birth to Inuyasha in and where Inu no Taisho had perished in battle.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: The audience is told he is a pirate, but we never see him do anything of the sort.
  • Playing Both Sides: He places bounties and collects the Pearl's of the Four Great Pearls, while at the same time being Kirinmaru's most trusted retainer, or at least plays at being so.
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: Not quite a robot, but Riku refers to himself as a doll, and that he's only an imitation of a living being. While he looks, acts and bleeds like a human, six hundred years ago, he behaved very robotically and didn't really express emotions.
  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Anything Riku can see and hear, Kirinmaru can as well. Used to comedic effect when he tells Towa, who proceeds to scream into his face so her threats will reach Kirinmaru.
  • The Power of Creation: Riku seems to be able to conjure things from nothing, such as a sword, miasma-filled insects and even gold.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: He already knows he is a "doll" rather then a true yokai but he later finds out that he was created from Kirinmaru's severed horn and because of that connection Kirinmaru can see and hear everything that Riku can.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: He really doesn't grasp this concept very well. When seems to start having feelings for Towa, he wonders why he hasn't killed her yet, because he believes loving someone means killing them.

    The Tree of Ages

Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Japanese), Willow Johnson (English), Noelia Socolovsky (Latin Spanish)

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: It takes the image of Kikyo to talk with the trio, claiming it's from the spiritual power of her arrow that trapped Inuyasha to it for decades.
  • Ambiguously Evil: It tells the trio that they must kill Sesshomaru and Kirinmaru to stop them from rewriting time. However, it seems to be working with Sesshomaru and it was the one who used the dream butterfly to steal Setsuna's dreams.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: It seems to be up to something behind the scenes. It tried to get the trio to kill Kirinmaru and Sesshomaru, but didn't reveal it was working with Sesshomaru to save Rin who appears to be in an eternal slumber, or the fact it was the one who used the Dream Butterfly on Setsuna.
  • Suddenly Voiced: In the first series it was just a tree. In this series it now talks through the appearance of Kikyo.

    Yawaragi

Voiced by: Ryōko Shiraishi (Japanese), Tiana Camacho (English), María Laura Casaani (Latin Spanish)

Moroha's master, an powerful elder of the wolf demon tribe and the one that raised her after Inuyasha and Kagome went missing. Has a gambling problem which ends up with her selling Moroha to Jyubei.

  • Blessed with Suck: The Armor of the Iron Rat enhances her demon powers, but the armor itself is cursed as the wielder cannot remove the armor without a key to transfer the armor, which will continuously shrink until it crushes her.
  • Blow You Away: Her most powerful attack is a hurricane of wind enhanced yoki called Scattering Winds.
  • The Gambling Addict: One of the reasons she sells Moroha to Jyubei is to pay off her gambling debts.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her less-than-ideal treatment of Moroha, Yawaragi really does care about her.
  • Mama Bear: She's protective of Moroha as her guardian and mentor. A lot of her harsher actions towards Moroha are because she cares for the girl.
  • Parental Substitute: The closest thing to a mother figure for Moroha in her missing parents' absence.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: Like all wolf demons, she goes barefoot save for some loose wrapping and fur shin guards.
  • Scars Are Forever: She has claw marks on her face as a result of one of Moroha's Beniyasha rampages in the past.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: She had Moroha essentially thrown to the crucible of Kodoku, where numerous dangerous demons who kill each other to emerge as the strongest lurk within its caves as a test to Moroha when the latter was still training under her, while preventing her from using her rouge as a power up in the past. When she returns in the present day, she subjects Moroha to a good beating as a final test to her under similar conditions. Moroha emerged victorious both times. Despite her harshness, however, Yawaragi does care for her protege and is proud of her when she succeeds every time.
  • So Proud of You: She tells Moroha how proud she is of her for mastering the Crimson Dragon Wave and that she has nothing left to teach her just before dying, content that her young pupil has grown stronger.

    Rion

Voiced by: Saki Fujita (Japanese), Lisa Reimold (English)

Kirinmaru's daughter who has been sealed away on Mount Musubi.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: She is Kirinmaru's daughter, and seeks to kill him to stop his ambitions.
  • Back from the Dead: With Setsuna's help, Rion is able to come back to life in a Kikyo-like way.
  • Dead All Along: After her debut, she is revealed to have died 600 years before the the main stories. Her soul was trapped by her own father to help her keep living.
  • Hates Their Parent: She wants the half-demon princesses to defeat her father to set her soul free and stop his ambitions. She also spells out that he has "lost her" when he confronts her directly, indicating that he completely alienated her with his ambitions. It's later revealed that she actually still loves him and was happy to see how much he cared for her, even asking Setsuna to sever their threads so they could pass on together.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: Never wears shoes in the series.
  • The Undead: Like Kikyo, she's a specter bound to a clay doll made from her ashes and the soil of her gravesite.
  • Trauma Button: Her death at the hands of Sakasa left a big impact on both her and her father. When Osamu tormented her, he took the form of Sakasa, causing her to run away, clearly terrified and begging someone to help her while he chased her.

Modern Era

    Mei Higurashi

Voiced by: Haruka Terui (Japanese), Xanthe Huynh (English), Noelia Lestani (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mei_higurashi.png

Sota's daughter and Towa's adopted little sister.

  • Big Sister Worship: She adores Towa, and while she initially had her misgivings about her tomboyishness and her penchant for getting into fights, even that quickly went away when she personally witnesses just how cool and badass her adopted older sister is. She also looks up to Setsuna and Moroha to a lesser extent and latches onto them immediately.
  • Cheerful Child: As far as Towa is concerned, she's a shy but cheerful girl.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Brown hair and eyes.
  • Demonic Possession: Briefly possessed by the Hitokon in episode 3 before Setsuna gets rid of it.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: She has Sota's eyes.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Sees Towa as the foolish sibling for always getting into fights.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Her prior misgivings of Towa getting into fights seemingly evaporates and turns into near Big Sister Worship after seeing her help cut down the three-eyed centipede, just like how her father became a Hero-Worshipper of Inuyasha after seeing him in action.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Towa wonders if the reason she cares so much for Mei is because she sees her as a replacement for Setsuna who she was separated from.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • After being rescued by Towa from a bunch of delinquents Mei immediately starts balling her eyes out about wanting Towa to be girlier, much to Towa's embarrassment as she is preparing to fight off said delinquents.
    • She just found out about time travel, demons and was recently possessed. Her main focus? She now has two more older sisters.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Mei looks almost exactly like her mother, except for the eyes which resemble her father.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Towa's tomboy. This is a problem for Towa, since Mei wants her to be girlier while Towa has no personal interest in being so.

    Moe Higurashi

Moe Higurashi

Voiced by: Eriko Matsui (Japanese), Erika Harlacher (English), Vanina García (Latin Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moe_higurashi.png

Sota's wife, and Towa's adopted mother.

  • Elegant Classical Musician: Teaches Setsuna how to play the violin and is also skilled at playing the piano.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She keeps her eyes closed, yet she doesn't have any trouble seeing.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: She seems to take everything Sota told her about the existence of demons really well.
  • Muggle Foster Parents: She and her husband Sota raise Sesshomaru's half-demon daughter.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Moe instantly welcomes Moroha and Setsuna into her household, despite knowing nothing about them. That they both have super-powers and are armed with deadly weapons is not something she has any concerns about.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Like the Higurashi family she married into, Moe has no adverse reactions upon finding out that demons and magic are real things. She just accepts it instantly and without question.

    Osamu Kirin

Osamu Kirin

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English)

Towa's English language teacher from the modern day era.

  • Artificial Human: He is revealed to be created from Kirinmaru's right arm that was severed in a fight with the Great Dog Demon that Riku later disposed of in the Bone Eater's Well, ending up in modern times.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: He still has demon powers, but we see him save Mei and her friends from Carrion Crows.
  • Becoming the Mask: Unlike Kirinmaru, Osamu enjoyed his life in the modern era that he became an Eccentric Mentor.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Hearing about Rion's death causes him to take the True Grim Comet so that he would destroy all demons in the past. The reason for his bigotry is because he believed Rion was killed by the demons in the past and decides to commit Genocide from the Inside.
  • The Call Knows Where You Live: The reason the True Grim Comet appeared after 500 years well into the Reiwa Era was because of his presence, since the True Grim Comet is drawn by powerful demon energy.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Despite his profession, he is actually a reasonable guy with an oddball personality who means well, and he gives Towa a lecture for being late from school. Until he tries to kill her in the last episodes of season 2, that is.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Boy howdy. Once he learns that Rion was killed by Sakasa, a demon, he decides to take the Grim Comet to the Feudal Era, uses her own daughter to create the Grim Butterfly to purify the world from all demons (even the good ones), and is not above tormenting his own daughter to keep the plan going since she's not really alive but expendable dead fodder.
  • Friend to All Children: He adores children, and goes out of his way to keep Mei Higurashi and her friends safe from Carrion Crows.
  • Good Counterpart: Despite being a quirky teacher, he is a lot more mellow and courteous, and wants to save humanity with no ulterior motives aside from saving human lives such as children whereas Kirinmaru wants to be be revered as a hero. Unlike Kirinmaru, he is aware that his presence is drawing danger to the Reiwa Era, and wants to find a way to save hundreds, if not millions of lives, including children, from the True Grim Comet. In fact, just like the other incarnations, he does not want Kirinmaru to go into the Reiwa Era out of his desire to destroy the True Grim Comet to save the humans. Massively subverted in the last episodes when he controls and torments Rion to get rid of all demons, though.
  • Humans Are Special: Living in the modern era taught him that humans are wonderful people who should be protected. On the other hand, he acquires a huge disdain for demons after learning Rion was killed by one.
  • Irony: Osamu is Kirin's severed right arm that formed a new incarnation that wound up in Reiwa Japan, but is connected to Kirinmaru in the Feudal Era. He has no ulterior motives outside of saving lives, and the fact that he doesn't want Kirinmaru to come to the modern era speaks volumes, considering they both share the same voice actors. The fact that he apologizes to the girls due to the current situation speaks volumes of his character.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He was unaware that Rion was killed hundreds of years ago until he was told otherwise. He was saddened when he hears about it from the girls and quietly snaps.
  • Tranquil Fury: Without even dropping his corteous attitude, he takes the Grim Comet to the Feudal Era to exterminate all demons using Rion as revenge for her death at the hands of demons.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just the fact he used to be Kirinmaru's right hand reveals a whole lot.

Villains

Ne No Kubi, aka Root Head

Voiced by: Hiroya Egashira (Japanese), Kellen Goff (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nenokubi.png

A youkai made of roots that absorbs its nutrients from humans. It was sealed by Kikyou but after a landslide broke the seal it went looking for the Shikon Jewel again.

  • Collector of the Strange: Decapitates its victims and takes their heads.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Gets sent to Hell by Inuyasha with Meido Zangetsuha.
  • Energy Absorption: Can absorb demonic energy, or at least gained the ability to during its time fused to the Sacred Tree.
  • Extra Eyes: Has dozens of eyes of various sizes.
  • Life Drinker: It drains its victim's life force and withers them down to skeletons for nourishment.
  • Off with His Head!: Inflicts this on its victims.
  • One-Hit Kill: Kagome utterly obliterates it with only one arrow, showing she has surpassed Kikyo.
    • Towa does this again when she, Setsuna and Moroha face it inside the Sacred Tree. This time, she hits a weakspot identified by Moroha, seemingly destroying it for good.
  • Plant Person: Has roots that act like Combat Tentacles.
  • Red Herring: Is set up to look like the Big Bad of the overarching story. He is immediately dispatched in episode 4.
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: Was one of the yokai that attacked Kikyo looking to claim the Shikon Jewel and was sealed shortly before she met Inuyasha. When the seal wore out it promptly resumed searching for Kikyo and the Shikon Jewel... roughly three and a half years after the former died for reals and Kagome destroyed the latter.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: A (so far) one-off villain that appears only in the extra chapter set after the events of the main story. However, its appearance sets up the events of the sequel.

    Mistress Three-eyes

Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)

Another centipede demon, similar to Mistress Centipede, but with three eyes (hence the name). This time, she's searching for the Rainbow Pearls that Towa, Setsuna and Moroha posses.

    Joka

Voiced by: Sachiko Kojima (Japanese), Wendee Lee (English)

The leader of a race of demons called the Ka. She wants revenge on Sesshomaru.

    Drifting Pond and Venom Serpent

Voiced by: Taro Kiuchi (Japanese), Doug Erholtz (English)

A demon inhabiting the water of a pond, and a serpent demon living in said waters.

  • Poisonous Person: Each of them are highly poisonous, just in different ways.
  • Villainous Friendship: Evil demons they may be, the pond and serpent do seem to care for each other, as they become enraged when the other is attacked, attempt to defend each other and when the pond is killed the snake is clearly upset.

    Nikosen

Voiced by: Hideaki Tezuka (Japanese), Jason Marnocha (English), Luiz Nunes (Portuguese)

A demon that was once a sage. Konton contracts him to take out the heroes.

    Homura

Voiced by: Kosuke Goto (Japanese), Ben Diskin (English), Reinaldo Rodriguez (Portuguese)

An evil fire god in the mountains who is obsessed with Tamano.

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: He kills any man who glances at Tamano. Later she is imprisoned so that she no longer has contact with other men.
  • Man on Fire: He uses his Playing with Fire powers to immolate any man who looks at Tamano. After Tamano rejects him, he crosses the Despair Event Horizon and turns his powers on himself.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Holy shit... When Tamano rejects him, he literally burns with with so much rage that he sets himself on fire, Moroha had to snap Towa back to her senses from killing him, thus denying her of her revenge.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's responsible for burning the forest that separated the twins.
  • Yandere: He is extremely possessive of Tamano. He kidnapped her, locked her away, and he kills any man, even his own servants, simply for looking at her.

     Mahiruma

A God of harvest who seeks revenge of the village that took his Five Crops

  • Anti-Villain: He loved the daughter of the village chief who grew greedy, but believed he was deceived by her.
  • Revenge: What he sought after he thought he was deceived by Oharu.
  • Tragic Mistake: Had he stayed several more days, Oharu would had return his crops, and live together. He wasn't aware that she went to the tree to see him, and did not realized he left.

Kirinmaru and the Four Perils

    Kirinmaru

Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English), Adrián Wowczuk (Latin Spanish)

A powerful daiyokai who ruled the east while Tōga ruled the west. With the latter's passing and his son Sesshomaru's refusal to take up the mantle, he now seeks to control the west as well.

  • The Ace: Like Sesshomaru, because of his immense power, he has no use for the rainbow pearls, and he despises those who relies on them. He prefers his opponents to fight him at their natural full power rather than power that did not belong to them.
  • Action Dad: Season 2 reveals the immensely powerful demon warrior Kirinmaru has a daughter, who he would take into the field and make her watch as he defeated his opponents. Up until he was defeated by Toga the first time, he had never lost a fight with her watching.
  • Affably Evil: He's a gentleman through and through, and will pay his respects to his fallen foes.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He is much more of this than Naraku's surprisingly sudden poignant death. From the beginning, he was already a quite honorable and surprisingly decent Anti Villain who shows regret and some degree of care for others, even enemies, is less of a power-hungry and authority-seeking villain than Naraku in that he at least has genuine well-intentions but the end shows that ultimately he is a very old demon haunted by his losses and failures as a father. He is defeated by Sesshomaru because he was weakened and distracted and ultimately redeems himself by helping Rion move on but all that he could get in the end was a Bittersweet Ending as he and Rion pass away in peace. Even Sesshomaru and the girls pity him and forgive him for all he did, hoping he find peace and the former decently letting him spend his last moments rather than capitalizing on his vulnerability.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The Tree of Ages paints him as a villain who is using time to alter history to his will, and supposedly hates half-demons. However, Myoga doesn't believe Kirinmaru would go this far, especially as he had been content to leave the western lands in peace for so long. Likewise, he shows no interest in hunting down the main trio, and the reason he fight the girls the first time was because they attack him first, nor does he attack them while they are weak and defenseless, letting them fight him at their full potential. He also seems to prefer to perfectly lounge in his boat while reading a book. In fact if it wasn't for the prophecy, he wouldn't even bother with the girls. Not only that, he seems to want to destroy the Grim Comet no matter what and it's possible his so-called efforts to mess with time may be out of well-intentions to stop it from rampaging. He's later revealed to be a true Anti-Villain, in that his goals are indeed to save the future world from the Grim Comet, as even he does not wish to have all of humanity exterminated, though he does relish in the fact that it will make him the strongest and make him revered by all.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: Kirinmaru seems to regret the Great Dog Demon's death and their ongoing rivalry coming to a premature end.
  • Anti-Villain: While the girls oppose him, Kirinmaru will go out of his way to destroy the Grim Comet, even if it means teaming up with his sworn enemies.
  • Bad Boss: Downplayed. He is quite callous towards his subordinates, but considering the fact that they are all jerkasses and dirty and unfair cowards while he is a true gentleman and honorable fighter, he's quite justified. He's also not nearly as ruthless, abusive, and demanding as Naraku was: He is quite willing to discipline them, yes, but he doesn't just kill or threaten them, simply putting them in their places by intimidating them, not really punishing them. He's also indicated to have been nicer to Riku as he was the most competent of his retainers and even after his failure in saving the Great Dog Demon, he still acknowledges his abilities and trusts him.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Downplayed, but it's still there in the end of the first season. Kirinmaru successfully stops Zero's rampage for the time being by scattering the Rainbow Pearls, but he fails to stop her completely as Riku betrays him. Likewise, his second fight with the girls has him killing Setsuna by accident, which he is not too happy about. Still, he comes out victorious at the end and walks away while sparing Towa and Moroha for future encounters with them.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Despite preferring to fight with swords, his fight with Moroha displays like Sesshomaru he is more than capable of beating down enemies with his bare hands.
  • Barrier Warrior: His second fight with the trio has Kirinmaru display several defensive abilities that manifest itself as both hand-held shields and full-scale barriers to protect himself from the girls attacks.
  • Berserk Button: His is the violation of his moral code and honor. Whenever anyone shows dishonorable or going too far in their actions to his liking, Kirinmaru loses his affability and gets pissed. Even his subordinates and sister are handled quite roughly when they did this, and after the girls interrupt his duel with Sesshomaru, he gets mad enough to use a giant fireball to dispose of them.
  • Big Bad: The villain of the series, leader of the Four Perils and plotting to bring the destructive Grim Comet to Earth so he can battle the demons within it. Although killing them would technically save the world, it's an immensely risky gamble and Kirinmaru even admits he doesn't care about being a savior so much as he is elated at the idea of an epic battle.
  • Blood Knight: He enjoys his battle with Towa and Moroha after they unleash their respective full powers and hasn't had a good fight since his battle with Toga.
  • Blow You Away: One of his basic moves entails him using his yoki to release waves of wind, which he can control to either only bother people from their standing place while still forcefully blasting open a door to be strong enough to knock foes back a considerable distance. A wind-related skill that appears to be one of his special moves involves him releasing a tornado by slashing his sword at the air.
  • Broken Ace: While not apparent until the second season, the death of his daughter left Kirinmaru with quite a few issues. Which ultimately come to the surface during the final battle with Sesshomaru.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Kirinmaru is infamous amongst fans for being a far more likeable villain than Naraku due to being significantly different than him.
    • Personality wise, Naraku saw himself as superior to all beings, human and demon alike and especially despised half demons and never considered anyone but Sesshōmaru to be worthy of praise and respect, carrying a Faux Affably Evil attitude. Kirinmaru on the other hand is genuinely Affably Evil, be it towards humans, demons, or even half demons, and is willing to truly respect them if they were exceptional. Additionally, while Naraku is a Bad Boss who cared nothing for his minions and never respected them and regularly threatened and abused them and ended up killing them, Kirinmaru may not give much regard towards his followers, but he does show respect towards their abilities and never abuses them unless they angered him, and is shown to be willing to tolerate failure, as displayed by his dismissal of Totetsu and forgiving of Riku's failure. Finally, while Naraku is utterly without empathy towards others, Kirinmaru is ruthless, but can sympathize with others and even show remorse for his actions when the time called for it, and he does make an effort to leave innocents out of his way.
    • When it comes to combat, in stark contrast to Naraku being a Dirty Coward and constantly employing Villain: Exit, Stage Left, Kirinmaru utterly disdains dishonorable combat and would always fight directly no matter the odds. Additionally, while Naraku sought power in many ways, especially the Shikon Jewel, Kirinmaru hated the very idea of relying on outside power and believed that a warrior's worth must come from the power they have themselves. Their skill-set are also much different with Kirinmaru being heads and shoulders above Naraku in that Naraku is powerful but relies on barriers, energy attacks, and poison, while Kirinmaru is fully capable of physical combat and mixes it with energy attacks.
    • They are capable of creating other demons made from their parts, but were willing to betray them. Unlike Naraku, who was hated so much, his incarnations wanted him dead. Kirinmaru has had loyalty from his own incarnations, but they only betray him because his desire to change time forced their hands.
  • Cool Mask: He sports one shaped like a skull that he routinely wears in his humanoid form.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Knowing that Rion's current body is temporary and rapidly degrading but also knowing that she planned to kill him, he gave her the Zanseiken, but placed a curse on it that would progressively drain its user's kon. He did this reasoning that Rion would give the sword to whoever she believed was capable of killing him. In that sense, his plan entailed eliminating a powerful foe by taking advantage of the curse to drain the chosen user's kon and then transferring Rion's mind to that user's body.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His first fight with the Half-Demon Princesses has him stomping them with ease while holding back the entire time.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Although Towa does manage to briefly go up against him and actually scratch him in the face, he quickly decisively defeats her. His second fight with the Half-Demon Princesses, while still in his advantage, has him take them seriously, using more of his special skills and overall fighting with much more intensity to overwhelm them, showing some actual effort and Towa managing to catch him off-guard and worsen the wound he suffered from Riku while Setsuna was able to break through his hastily-formed barrier with a combination of her weapon and her Blood Blade to injure him close the spot where her sister had once injured him before he delivered the blow that mortally injured her. Once Setsuna dies from her injuries, Towa and Moroha's resulting activation of their Super Modes makes the fight all-out on both side as Kirinmaru also activates his demonic powers to engage them one last time. He still wins but has to struggle visibly in order to get the victory.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments. Typically around the trio and Sesshomaru.
  • Enemy Mine: He joined forces with the Great Dog Demon 500 years before to destroy the Grim Comet, as it posed an existential threat to the entire world.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loved his daughter Rion, and showed her the world when they here flying. Her sudden death forces him to seal her soul in Mount Musubi for 600 years. Aside from traveling to the Reiwa era, his main goal is to also give her a functioning body and take her alongside him. At the end of the series, he remembers how much he loved her, abandoning his quest for conquest to rekindle their relationship before happily going to the afterlife with his daughter.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Being an honorable person through and thorough, Kirinmaru gets to show this numerous times.
    • He believes that any victory over an opponent must be won fairly and squarely, disgusted when his followers ask him to kill Tōga when he was severely injured and even asking Riku to bring him medicinal herbs to save his life.
    • He's disapproving of how low Zero has sunk in her desire to get revenge on Tōga for not reciprocating her love. While he starts out as being detached to her approach of handling the girls, he visibly starts getting more and more against her despicable actions until she breaks Tenseiga callously, by which he has had enough and ends up doing the right thing and stopping his sister before she can continue to act more pitifully and kill the girls by regaining her demonic powers inside the Rainbow Pearls. He would have stopped her by force when she still wants to pursue the Pearls and kill the girls had Riku not stabbed him and forced him into a battle with the girls.
    • He may dislike humanity, but as it turns out, even his distaste of them has limits and having the Grim Comet exterminate humanity would not be what he wants.
  • Evil Redhead: One of the few redheads in the setting and certainly evil.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Particularly in the english dub.
  • Fantastic Racism: Subverted. He reportedly despises humans and half-demons, but it was later revealed that when he did massacre half-demons and humans, he does so because they opposed him rather than the fact that a prophecy from the Shikon Jewel foretelling his demise and he is seen even praising them when they valiantly tried to oppose him. It's only when his daughter Rion is killed by a half-demon and human that he really gained a distaste for them, making him more of a Tragic Bigot. Even then, he never goes out of his way to harm and kill half-demons and humans unless they try to kill him themselves.
  • Flash Step: He is able to do this to easily dodge attacks and get close to his foes.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Kirinmaru and Zero seems to have this kind of relationship most of the time. At first, Zero, being the older sibling, appears to be the more straight-forward one in dealing with the girls while Kirinmaru, the younger, is much more relaxed and apathetic in handling them. By the end of the first season, though, it becomes clear that the younger sibling is actually the responsible one while the older sibling in this case is the foolish one, as Kirinmaru couldn't care less about dealing with the half-demon princesses because he has other matters to concern with, such as his endgame to save the future world that he is working on with his mother, while Zero targets the girls mainly due to her jealousy and cynicism.
  • Going to Give It More Energy: Once he learns of Towa's ability to absorb yoki, he simply blasts her with more of it until it overwhelms her. Later on, when Towa challenges him to absorb his yoki in his final battle, Kirinmaru responds by launching his demonic energy in the form of a black hole until it again overwhelms her, this time to the point of unconsciousness.
  • Hand Blast: He can fire his yoki at his foes from his hands in a concentrated burst.
  • Heartbroken Badass: The loss of his daughter Rion really did a number on Kirinmaru, leaving him with a lot of regrets.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Setsuna in the Season 1 finale. Unlike most examples, he's remorseful for having to done the deed and laments Tenseiga being broken.
  • Honor Before Reason:
    • He prefers to fight Tōga and Sesshomaru when they are at their best, refusing to fight them at their weakest.
    • He was perfectly willing to cut the girls loose, but they chose to fight him instead. After he defeats them again, he clearly has the winning advantage, but retreats instead and fight the girls another day but not before paying respects to Setsuna and laments Tenseiga being broken.
  • Identity Amnesia: When we first meet him, he appears to have not remembered any of his subordinates' names.
  • In Their Own Image: His gameplan according to the Tree of Ages is to alter history to his will. This is the reason The Tree needs the girls to defeat him, but they have other ideas. However, Myoga points out Kirinmaru isn't the type to go this far. By the time of his first appearance onscreen he doesn't remember Tokotsu and is disinterested in going after the girls, likely validating Myoga's claims.
  • Just Toying with Them: His first fight against the trio comprises him doing this, as he easily knocks them around and wins the fight without so much as a scratch without using any of his special skills or spells, which he wastes no time in boasting after knocing out Moroha, only using a glimpse of it just to show off as he soon defeats Setsuna and Towa. Kirinmaru even goes as far as to state that he had been holding back the entire time in their first fight. Of course, with Kirinmaru injured by Riku, their second fight has him pulling off a Once The Gloves Came Off to go all-out to show off several special skills to still win the fight despite their growth.
  • Kirin: From his name, Kirinmaru is at least a kirin-based youkai. He and his subordinates apparently being from China would support this.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Kirinmaru is possibly the topmost of this in the Inuyasha universe along with Sesshomaru, literately having every physical aspect at completely monstrous levels: The strength to casually brush off attacks just by impacting his wrist in the way, nonchalantly dominate blade-locks and catch weapons with 2 fingers, with the attackers being superhumans as well, and even dissipate a tornado and block a barrier-breaking barrage of crystal shards with a few movements of his sword, as well as clash with an equal so strong as to cause shockwaves and make the ocean rise and cause the sky to rumble. The speed and reflexes to create afterimages with casual movements, nonchalantly dodge arrows, and casually fight multiple seasoned superhuman fighters at once. And finally the durability and resilience to survive being impaled with a sword in the mid-section, hit with two super energy dragons, and then a huge flaming phoenix after being weakened, and still keep fighting at peak shape.
  • Master Swordsman: Able to go toe-to-toe with Sesshomaru in this regard.
  • Mind over Matter: Kirinmaru shows at the end of the first season that he can use his demonic energy for telekinetic purposes: He used casual hand gestures to levitate and scatter the Rainbow Pearls controlled by Zero across the land, blast away Towa, and summon his sword when it was buried on the ground, but he shows he can do it just fine with sheer thought when he removes Riku's sword impaled on him without so much of a movement.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He fully intents to use time to travel to the future destroy the True Grim Comet in the Reiwa Era, but his incarnations and daughter Rion fully believes this to be a bad thing, as him coming to the modern era would bring about the Degenerate Age. Even Osamu Kirin, his right arm, doesn't want him to come to the Reiwa Era, speaks volumes of how this specific conquest would bring disaster.
  • Noble Demon: Kirinmaru is easily the nicest villain in the series due to the fact that despite his villainy, he is surprisingly honorable and refuses to break his code of honor no matter what. He also admits that he dislikes harming innocents and offered Takechiyo and Rin to just give up and be spared.
  • No-Sell:
    • Owing to his great strength and power, Towa cannot sense his yoki.
    • Inuyasha and Kagome's attacks can't even make a dent on him as he just deflects the Wind Scar, Adamant Barrage augmented by Kagome's arrow, and even the Backlash Wave with casual swings of his sword.
  • The Omnipresent: He discovers the Grim Comet existing in Reiwa Era Japan under his modern disguise of Osamu Kirin.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Is seemingly content to lounge on his throne all day eating fruit while his subordinates do all the heavy lifting for him. The only reason he intervenes in episode 18 is because he didn't want Totetsu leading the girls to his ship. By the end of the first season, though, this is indicated to be not entirely the case and he is actually quite active in progressing with his unknown plans as he freely leaves his ship to talk with Sesshomaru's mother and doesn't hesitate to stop Zero from killing the girls and going any further personally.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Having your child suddenly die right in front of you is the last thing a father wants, and that's what happened when he fought a human and his half-demon apprentice in which the latter stabs Rion after he was decapitated. While he's likely to have known about Tenseiga, he most likely didn't ask Tōga for help out of his own pride, and sealed her soul in Mount Musubi. It gets to the point he uses a Dream Butterfly to send his own dreams to Rion so she can sleep.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Wears purple clothes, his yoki is purple and he's possibly the most powerful demon in the setting.
  • Rage Breaking Point: He grows frustrated with Zero's interference with girls as well as getting Sesshomaru involved. While Zero claims it was for his own benefit, he doesn't buy it, and tells her things happened because of her wish on the Shikon Jewel, which he calls "a worthless orb". He makes his point by dispersing her Rainbow Pearls, and Zero cuts ties with him.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Kirinmaru is the ruler of the east and was said to be just as strong as Tōga, who is likewise the ruler of the west, as the strongest demons in existence. Out of all the eastern demons the girls faced, he is the only one who proves to be too much for all of them at once, whereas the Four Perils and Zero only gave the girls as much trouble as they did due to confronting them one-on-one and still ultimately ends up on the losing end.
  • Sinister Surveillance: Since Riku was made from his horn, he can see and hear what Riku does.
  • Story-Breaker Power: The main reason why the first season doesn't show him in action much. He's a centuries-years old Daiyokai whose power and prowess rivals that of Toga and even Sesshomaru can't defeat him. His disinterest in the girls and oppositions is the only reason why the protagonists remain alive at that point, as he demonstrates in their first and second fights with them by handily beating them down, even when he is weakened, going as far as to kill Setsuna. He's more active in the second season but is still held back by his necessity to have them around as he needs them to find Akuru. After Sesshomaru is left incapacitated to protect his daughters, the producers have him placed on pitched fights to ensure he doesn't wipe the floor with the heroes and ultimately settle by having him fight Sesshomaru for a final battle, where his issues ends up as the reason for his defeat.
  • Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: When Rion holds her staff to his neck, he challenges her to do this to test her resolve. Upon sensing her hesitation, he grabs the staff and uses it to impale Riku.
  • Strong and Skilled: Whereas Naraku's fighting style resolved around his barrier, appandages, and Miasma, making him somewhat Unskilled, but Strong by default of having many versatile abilities but displaying little skill in fighting, Kirinmaru displays such excellent control over his demonic energy that he can use it for numerous purposes and while he doesn't have Naraku's extra appandages and Miasma, he easily exceeds Naraku's abilities by being both extremely physically powerful AND incredibly skilled in fighting. All this combined means he is easily capable of taking on Inuyasha and Kagome whereas their abilities previously countered and nearly defeated Naraku, and the Skilled aspect shows and is outright stated compared to the Half-Demon Princesses as he easily outclasses them and mocks their lack of skill.
  • Super-Toughness: Before his second fight with the girls, he was already stabbed by Riku through the mid-section. It only makes him slightly wobble over and he goes as far as to walk down casually with it still impaled in him before he removes it and proves it does little to affect his combat performance as he proceeds to once again kick the asses of the girls. Even having Towa stab him at that same place only serves to irritate him, despite him bleeding from the mouth, and being slashed in the face by Setsuna simply makes him agitated enough to accidentally kill Setsuna with a single slash. Finally, he takes a powerful red-dragon energy beam and a two-headed blue dragon energy beam from Moroha and Towa in their Super Modes and simply comments on how it actually damaged him. By the end of the battle, the girls can barely stand while Kirinmaru is still pretty fine and able to walk away from the fight on his own power.
  • Sword Beam: One of Kirinmaru's favorite attacks seems to be launching powerful slashes of purple energy, which isn't even a special move of his, meaning unleashing those attacks happen with no effort from his part. One of his special skills, Blasting Barrage, has him launch several purple blade-like projectiles at the enemy simultaneously.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As the second season shows, Kirinmaru wasn't always the most powerful demon in existence. He had conquered other demons through the globe, yes, but he met his match with Toga and was defeated. He gained that status by continuing his training until he eventually rivaled Toga.
  • Villain Respect:
    • Although his first loss to Toga was a sore shame for him, he still acknowledged his strength. He eventually developed a friendship with Toga and even now he still respects his strength and might. Literately, every one he's shown respect towards in the present are Toga's family members. Sesshomaru's mother is called "Your Ladyship". Even Inuyasha gets some of this as Kirinmaru acknowledged he would have been able to assist Sesshomaru with the Grim Comet.
    • He more prominently shows respect towards Sesshomaru as the pure-blooded demon son of Toga, even letting him act as he wished despite Sesshomaru seeming to not be interested in helping Kirinmaru and going as far as to bow before him when Zero went too far.
    • He complements Towa and Setsuna's strength after being informed of Tokotsu's death at their hands. This changes when he finally faces them and Moroha in a fight, as he expresses disappointment with how easily he defeated them. Their second battle, though, causes Kirinmaru to finally develop a healthy amount of respect for them, as Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha show how they had improved and managed to actually challenge and force him to take them seriously. By the end of the fight, with Setsuna dead and Towa and Moroha defeated after putting up a hell of a fight, Kirinmaru compliments Towa and Moroha for their might, even stating that he had never been able to fight this seriously ever since Inu no Taisho's passing. Stating he would be looking forward to their next meeting, Kirinmaru even acknowledges Setsuna for having injured him close to where his sister had, stating he would never forget her name.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The girls have been defeating Kirinmaru's subordinates and other powerful demons up until they finally face him three-on-one, where he proves why he is Inu No Taisho's equal and currently the world's strongest demon alive by completely destroying them in combat, easily countering their attacks and casually retaliating with simple maneuvers that easily knocks them down many times, with even Moroha's Beniyasha form being unable to make a dent on him and soon being drained of her power to unconsciousness. Even Towa can only leave a single scracth on him. With the trio truly defeated, it takes Sesshomaru's intervention to prevent Kirinmaru from killing them, and he only stops the fight before they go any further just because he wants to maintain their alliance, never showing signs of losing to Sesshomaru, who had previously dominated many powerful opponents before.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: While seeking to transcend the ages and cause the world he is currently on to apparently perish is pretty bad, it's done because he seeks to destroy the full Grim Comet that will exterminate all of humanity 500 years in the future. Indeed, Sesshomaru's mother who knows of this voluntarily works with him. While he does admit to enjoying the fact that it would prove that he is the strongest and that it would allow him to rule over both humanity and demons, he's still the lesser of two evils.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The reason why he lost against Sesshomaru in their final fight. While previously he could perfectly match him, at that time, he had been worn out from repeated fights while Sesshomaru has had plenty time to recover all his strength. This is not even considering the fact that Kirinmaru's issues and regrets are compounded by recent events while Sesshomaru is fully determined and ready to fight to protect his loved ones. This is visibly shown as his attacks are much wilder, discarding the previous refined skills he displayed, and even Sesshomaru admits this, stating that his inner conflict and humanity have dulled his strength and skills to where he can no longer share the title of the strongest. Needless to say, had the fight been when Kirinmaru was fully focused and at full strength, it would have likely only ended in Sesshomaru's victory if he was being manipulative or he was helped by the other heroes.
  • World's Best Warrior: He's not only equal to the Great Dog Demon in terms of raw demonic power, but also has equal combat prowess to him. Indeed, in his fighting scenes, he gets to show off previously unseen levels of control over demonic energy and incredible levels of swordsmanship as he easily wipes the floor with the girls and makes it clear he is perfectly capable of beating them not just in terms of power but also in terms of skill, having centuries of experience above them, going as far as to mock and belittle them for their initial lack of skill. Likewise, Kirinmaru gets to fight Sesshomaru, who was regarded as having become just as great of a warrior as his father was, to a stalemate.
  • World's Strongest Man: An extremely powerful yokai who happens to be Inu no Taisho's equal, Kirinmaru ruling the eastern lands while Inu No Taisho rules the western lands, Kirinmaru thus ranks as the current strongest demon alive. It was their collective presence that maintains the peace between the lands. The Tree of Ages wants the girls to defeat him to keep him from altering history to his will, but they refused. His fights with them subsequently goes on to prove his worth as the current most powerful yokai alive as he is the only one to completely wipe the floor with the three of them and even when they get stronger and Kirinmaru had gotten himself injured, he still defeats them, killing Setsuna. Even Sesshomaru, who back in the original series was the undisputed strongest character with his father dead, can only fight him to a stalemate, their clash being so great that it could shake the ground and skies itself. Not only that, when he is awakened to kill Inuyasha and Kagome, the former being the most powerful half-demon and the latter being the most powerful priestess, rather than let Kirinmaru fight them or fight him himself, Sesshomaru decides to save them by teaming up with him and then sealing them away, making it apparent Kirinmaru could have killed Inuyasha and Kagome and even Sesshomaru is not sure that he can defeat him. When he fights Inuyasha and Kagome, nothing they do can even come close to defeating him and it's noted he can pretty much kill them with a single powerful attack. Ultimately, he is defeated only at the end by Sesshomaru due to not being at full strength.

    Tokotsu

Voiced by: Taro Kiuchi (Japanese), Imari Williams (English)

A boar yokai and one of the Shikyo, or Four Perils working under Kirinmaru. Former owner of the red rainbow pearl before Moroha decapitated him and took it.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Who killed him; Moroha took his body for the bounty, along with his Rainbow Pearl, but she just woke up to his headless body and didn't have any memory of slaying him. Tokotsu also identifies Moroha as his slayer. Considering Moroha tends to rely on her Clamshell of Rouge, and it will occasionally trigger her Superpowered Evil Side and losing her memory of what happens a day before, him getting killed by her while berserk is a possibility.
  • Losing Your Head: Inverted, he lost his body (to Moroha) and is now stuck with only his head (or skull to be more precise).
  • Necromancer: Can summon an army of skeletons to fight for him.
  • Posthumous Character: Played with, his supposed death at Moroha's hands is why his son Jakotsumaru is trying to revive him. Of course, as a youkai, being "dead" doesn't really stop him from interacting with his son and the three half-demon princesses.

    Kyuki

Voiced by: Toa Yukinari (Japanese), Dawn M. Bennett (English)

One of the Four Perils working under Kirinmaru. Possesses the purple rainbow pearl and desires the silver, red and gold ones to increase her power.

  • Animal Motifs: The Tiger.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Uses her rainbow pearl absorb the yoki from the girls. Later gets subjected to this when Towa learns to activate her own energy absorption powers on demand.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: She wants all the Rainbow Pearls and use them to be stronger than Kirinmaru. And then she gets injured in battle and Riku kills her.
  • Energy Absorption: Can absorb yoki through her purple rainbow pearl.
  • Great White Feline: Her true form is a giant white tiger with wings.
  • Lightning Lash: Her preferred weapon in her humanoid form is an energy whip. In her true form, she uses her tail this way.
  • Magicial Barefooter: Kyuki, like most demons, never wears shoes.
  • The Starscream: She desires power for herself to be stronger than Kirinmaru. Unfortunately, her plan to gather all the rainbow pearls is interrupted by Riku.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female Peril.
  • Stripped to the Bone: When she dies thanks to Riku, only her skeleton is left.
  • Winged Humanoid: Takes this form, though her true form is that of a giant winged tiger.

    Konton

Konton

Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (Japanese), Armen Taylor (English), Javier Carbone (Latin Spanish)

One of the Four Perils working under Kirinmaru.
  • Adaptational Attractiveness: He is given a more handsome face with eyebrows whereas in the anime, he was older-looking with no eyebrows.
  • Armor of Invincibility: In his first appearance he wore armor made from the shell of Meioju, a turtle yokai with a nearly impenetrable shell.
  • BFS: His sword is rather large, and he can even extend it further to a significant degree.
  • The Blank: He's based on the Hundun from Chinese Mythology and his true form is hinted as such. His humanoid form, however, has a face.
  • Hate Sink: Konton is a racist, sexist Smug Snake who talks down to his enemies out of a feeling of superiority, callously manipulates people who care about each other to fight and conducts a slaughter of a village of peaceful demons to which he expresses prejudiced indifference. He lacks anything that makes his companions humanized or even impressive as villains.
  • Magic Knight: In addition to his Ofuda-powered magic, he also uses a sword.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Forces Moroha's mentor Yawaragi to try to kill her former pupil, ostensibly promising her the key to releasing her cursed ever-shrinking armor in return.
  • Off with His Head!: How he bites it thanks to Towa redirecting the blue ogre he summoned which wiped his noggin clean off.
  • Ofuda: Uses a version of these as part of his magic. Uses can range from blowing up a fortress to using one as a means of teleportation. In addition, his two familiars are also actually powered be these.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Coupled with Fantastic Racism. Konton expresses disdain for Japanese demons, believing himself superior for being from the mainland. Additionally, he's quite dismissive of the female trio when they come to fight him, commenting they should dance and perform for his entertainment.
  • Slasher Smile: Comes out with a sick grin to face Yawaragi after he slaughtered the village of rat demons.
  • Smug Snake: Konton fancies himself a brilliant mastermind with no equal but when someone gets the drop on him in combat is prone to fury and panic.
  • Verbal Tic: Regularly describes things as "disgraceful" ("distasteful" in the English dub).
  • Vertebrate with Extra Limbs: The art of Konton shown during Myoga's explainer shows him with four wings and six legs, but no head.
  • Villain Teleportation: Can use his magic to teleport.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In addition to combat with the heroines, Konton murders a village of peaceful rat demons, with a baby seen amongst the corpses.

    Totetsu

Totetsu

Voiced by: Hiroki Shirokuma (Japanese), Paul St. Peter (English), Álvaro Pandelo (Latin Spanish)

One of the Four Perils working under Kirinmaru. A gluttonous demon who seeks to consume Buddhist monks with strong spiritual power. Claims to have eaten Sanzo, the legendary monk from the Journey to the West.

  • Eye Scream: In the manga, Moroha shot him in the eyes, turning his face into its familiar form.
  • Flying on a Cloud: Following on his Journey to the West theme, his main form of transport is by flying on a black cloud. Interestingly enough, it seems that he can transform into the same cloud itself when he needs to escape.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: Mainly uses his orange Rainbow Pearl to sense whether a potential target is a particularly virtuous monk or not.
  • Sole Survivor: As of episode 18, he's the last of the Perils left alive.
  • Vacuum Mouth: His main form of offense seems to be by sucking huge amounts of air into a huge vortex into his mount, similar to how Miroku's wind tunnel worked. Like with the latter this also makes him vulnerable to sucking in poisons. But unlike the wind tunnel, Totetsu can also reverse the flow to expel the poison or simply just blow his opponents away.
  • Villainous Glutton: Likes to eat Buddhist monks with strong spiritual power, though Setsuna poisoning him when he went after Miroku seems to have soured him on this for now.

Other allies of Kirinmaru

    Yotsume

Voiced by: Takumi Yamazaki (Japanese), John DeMita (English), Ariel Abadi (Latin Spanish)

A four-eyed owl youkai with a seeming connection to the events that led to Ne No Kubi's release. Is actually a minion of Kyuki.

  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's first seen during the flashback in episode 1, watching Kagome and Sango. At the end of the episode, he's revealed as having taken the form of the local lord's retainer while trying to question Towa. Meanwhile, Moroha's reaction to him indicates he's somewhat well known.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: Isn't apparently much of a fighter. Even a Rainbow Pearl doesn't save him from being stuck helplessly to a cliff face by Moroha's Sacred Arrows, and when Setsuna proves immune to the spell he was using on the others due to her dreamlessness, she quickly kills him.
  • Extra Eyes: He has four eyes. Gains a fifth when Kyuki lends him her rainbow pearl.
  • Meaningful Name: Played with. While the characters for his name mean "Night Nails," phonetically, his name also sounds like the Japanese for "four-eyes."
  • Ominous Owl: His presence and obvious demonic origin in episode 1 signals that all isn't well in the feudal era.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He can take human form, though he still retains his four eyes, requiring that he cover them.

    Jakotsumaru

Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei (Japanese), Marin Miller (English), Martín Gopar (Latin Spanish)

Son of Tokotsu who's going around sucking people's bones out of their bodies in an effort to collect enough to revive his father.

  • Adaptational Badass: In the anime, he goes out like a punk when he fights Moroha in her Beniyasha form. The manga version however is able to keep up with Koga.
  • Call-Back: His situation where he needs to gather bones to revive hus father is the same as that of the Bone Demon and her father in the original series.
  • Combat Hand Fan: His preferred weapon.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Receives this at the hands of Moroha's Beniyasha form.
  • Dem Bones: Not only can he suck people's bones out of their bodies, he can animate the bones into minions.
  • Effeminate Voice: He's a boy with a girly face and a female voice actress.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Just like the Bone Demon from the original series, he's also collecting bones to revive his father.

    Zero

Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese), Carrie Keranen (English), Karin Zavala (Latin Spanish)

The older half-sister of Kirinmaru. In a bid to avert the prophecy that predicts his demise, she is the one who ordered Homura to burn down the forest in which Sesshoumaru secluded his daughters, leading to their separation.

  • Actually a Doombot: She can use paper Skikigami to appear to others remotely.
  • Animal Motifs: Spiders, like Naraku.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: The death of Tōga, the Great Dog Demon, drove her to such despair that she used the Shikon Jewel to separate her powers and despair into the Rainbow Pearls.
  • Berserk Button: Being compared to a human. When Sesshomaru's mother sees her in the underworld, she notices her jealousy right away and calls her human for it.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She takes out Tōga's rejection of her on Sesshomaru and his family after finding out Sesshomaru became a family man of four, and thus links her life with Rin so that if Zero dies, she does too. Sesshomaru's mother correctly guesses that the reason she took out her anger on Sesshomaru's family is because Toga was Happily Married with Izayoi, and was jealous, and does not hesitate telling her how petty it is, and how "human" she was being.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Toga tells her she's better than she thinks she is after he and Kirinmaru deal with the previous Grim Comet. After learning of his death, she casts away her emotions.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • She warns her brother about the prophecy made by the Shikon Jewel fortelling his demise, and attempts to avert it by indirectly causing the fire responsible for separating Towa and Setsuna.
    • A flashback in episode 28 shows that prior to sealing off her emotions, she was quite caring towards her niece Rion, openingly expressing concern for her safety and wellbeing, and chiding Kirinmaru for endangering his daughter.
  • Emotion Suppression: Tōga's death drove her to make a wish on the Shikon Jewel to forever rid herself of her emotions. Her tears were then converted into the Rainbow Pearls. Like every wish granted by the Jewel before, it's a case of Be Careful What You Wish For because Zero is now a remorseless villain determined to make her victims suffer for all they're worth.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Cursed Rin with a silver scale that will spread over her body and make her ugly if she doesn't tell Zero where the twins are, linking their lives so that Sesshomaru can't just kill her. She apparently didn't expect that Rin would rather die than let her daughters be harmed.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Is arguably this after fans have believed that she was the true antagonist of the entire series. While this may be more or less true, it really depends on HOW MUCH of the events she is responsible for.
  • Hate Sink: For a majority of the series, Zero fits this. Not only was she the one to reveal the prophecy of Kirinmaru getting slayed by a half-demon to her younger half-brother, she was even responsible for pretty much a majority of the events! From using a glass-scaled curse on Rin in order for Sesshomaru to join forces with Kirinmaru to indirectly causing Inuyasha and Kagome's 14-year separation from their daughter, Moroha, she is one of the most despicable characters in the entire franchise. She even caused both Towa and Setsuna to be separated as a result of the forest fire for a DECADE. In addition, she eventually shatters Sesshomaru's sword, Tenseiga, ALL BECAUSE SHE WAS JEALOUS OF TOGA'S AFFECTIONS TOWARDS IZAYOI. However, this is sort of downplayed as she does genuinely care about Kirinmaru and that she does show a softer side upon her defeat at the hands of the half-demon princesses.
  • I Can't Sense Their Presence: Because she poured all her demonic power into the Rainbow Pearls, her presence cannot be detected through her aura like other demons.
  • I Have Your Wife: She linked her own life with Rin, so that if she were to die in any point, Rin would die with her. Sesshomaru is trying to figure out how to save Rin so he can reunite with her.
  • Lack of Empathy: Has no qualms about killing innocent civilians or linking her life with theirs if it means getting what she wants.
  • Magic Staff: Zero carries with her a magical staff from which she seems to draw her magical powers from.
  • Manipulative Bitch: In contrast to her brother, Zero prefers to use and manipulate others to do her bidding. Particularly with Miroku and Setsuna.
  • Motive Decay: Initially, it appeared that her actions were simply to prevent the prophecy that would foretell her brother's fate. But it eventually becomes clear that she just wants to make the Half-Demon Princesses, and by extension, everyone around her suffer the same pain and misery she felt when Toga did not reciprocate her feelings.
  • My Hero, Zero: Inverted. Despite her name, she is far from heroic.
  • Rage Breaking Point: She was downright pissed when Sesshomaru used Tenseiga to revive her, to which she finds insulting because Tenseiga was forged from Tōga's fang. She was so angry, it drew Kirinmaru's attention.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Once Setsuna severs her thread that connected to her love for Toga, she realizes that Toga liked her for herself. Once she realizes this, she lifts the silver scales curse off of Rin and tells Riku to kill her, but also tell the twins to save her brother.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: She has several similarities with Naraku: Both of them became bitter and resentful because they couldn't be with the person they loved (Toga and Kikyo); both of them wanted to purge themselves of emotions (human emotions in Naraku's case), but ultimately had to take those emotions back; both made a wish on the Shikon Jewel; and both have a spider motif.
  • Synchronization: Her life is linked to Rin's so that both die if either is killed.
  • The Unfettered: Zero will let nothing stop her from "being who she is". Including sealing away her own emotions, synchronizing her life with Rin's as a safety mechanism...etc.
  • Woman Scorned: She fell in love with Tōga centuries ago and was deeply hurt when he didn't return her feelings. It got worse after Zero learned that Tōga sacrificed his life to save a human lover and their child, resulting in her wishing away her emotions with the help of the Shikon Jewel. Her attempts to harm and murder Tōga's mixed-blood descendants were motivated not just by her desire to save her brother, but also by her wish for Revenge by Proxy on Sesshomaru and his mother, whom Zero saw as living the happy life she herself never had with Tōga.
