The Morgana | Human Characters

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nation_symbol_us.jpeg

The beating heart of the New World, and the great industrial colossus of the new age. The United States was late into the first World War, proposed the League of Nations but refused to join, and - still crawling out from the debris of the Great Depression - is hesitant to fall into the politics and conflicts of the old, decadent European powers.

But America no longer has the option of abstaining. Her reach extends from the mainland to Hawaii, to Alaska, to Panama, to the Philippines - and there are new enemies coming to threaten all of it.

American Belles in General

  • Animal Theme Naming: Submarines were named after aquatic animals.
  • Location Theme Naming: United States naval conventions during Victory Belles' time were that battleships bore state names (e.g. Nevada), heavy/light cruisers bore city names (e.g. New Orleans)...and everything else became a sort of free-for-all. Aircraft carriers of the time were sometimes named for famous battles (such as Lexington and Yorktown).
  • Named After Somebody Famous: US destroyers of the era were named after USN personnel who had distinguished themselves in some way.

Destroyers (DD)

     Clemson-class

Stewart (DD-224)

Voiced by: Kira Buckland

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/157_big_30.jpeg
Patriotic. Inspirational.
"Hurrah, Captain! What a battle! Come on, crew, give the Captain a hand! Sir, Stewart and her crew thank you for your heroic actions."

Belle of the destroyer Stewart. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named after Rear Admiral Charles Stewart.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: She first made herself known to her crew as a voice delivering a rousing Crowd Chant urging them on to fight on against the Morgana, who had previously seemed nearly invincible. She also dresses in an Asian-inspired take on a relatively modern cheerleading outfit. In her introductory Kickstarter interview, Mahan comments that this is rather odd as cheerleading is (or rather, was at the time) mostly done by men. Detailed in a Kickstarter post, excerpted below:
"They think they beat our Captain, they think they beat this ship,
"So when I ask the question you gotta let it rip,
"I ask are you beaten, you shout 'Hell, no!'"
And a few sailors around the ship - not all, not even most, but some - shouted, "Hell, no!"
"I ask are you beaten, you shout 'Hell, no!'"
More: "Hell, no!"

     Farragut-class

Hull (DD-350)

Voiced by: Victoria Vitti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/143_big_1.jpeg
Sentimental. Reliable. Persevering.
"Captain, you really are the reliable sort, aren't you? I can't thank you enough for your help. My name is Hull. and I'm happy to be in the fleet of someone I can trust."

Belle of the destroyer Hull. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for United States captains.

     Porter-class

McDougal (DD-358)

Voiced by: Michele Knotz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/147_big_8.jpeg
Grumpy. Temperamental.
"Hahaha! You showed them! Every Morgana deserves that sort of beat down, if you ask me. The name's McDougal, by the way."

Belle of the destroyer McDougal. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • More Dakka: McDougal has four 5"/38 Mk 12 Twin Mk 22 Mod 0 turrets, which put together mean she has 8 barrels of anti-surface firepower where most other destroyers have four or five barrels (only the British Tribals and French Mogadors can compete on raw firepower). However, the Mk 22 mount she has lacks the great elevation of most other guns in the 5"/38 Mk 12 family and her guns are thus unable to engage aircraft.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named after Rear Admiral David McDougal.

     Mahan-class

Mahan (DD-364)

Voiced by: Marissa Lenti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/145_big_4.jpeg
Thoughtful. Deliberate.
"Captain, your actions... well, you saved the lives of everyone on board. I can't thank you enough. You and I? I think we're going to make a good team."

Belle of the destroyer Mahan. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for United States captains.

     Gridley-class

Maury (DD-401)

Voiced by: Jād Saxton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/146_big_0.jpeg
Analytical. Idealistic. Inquisitive.
"Captain, I was taking notes during that battle. I would very much like to review them with you, when you have the chance. Oh! And my name is Maury."

Belle of the destroyer Maury. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for United States captains.

     Bagley-class

Henley (DD-391)

Voiced by: Natalie Hoover

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/141_big_7.jpeg
Lucky. Clumsy. Competitive.
"I'm Henley, Captain. What would I have done without you, in that last battle? Here, sit, wait just a moment. I'll make us some sandwiches."

Belle of the destroyer Henley. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game and a starter Belle option for United States captains.

     Somers-class

Somers (DD-381)

Voiced by: Carrie Savage

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/155_big_7.jpeg
Genial. Polished.
"I can tell you what the headline is going to be tomorrow: Heroic Captain saves Somers from certain doom! Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?"

Belle of the destroyer Somers. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • More Dakka: Somers has four 5"/38 Mk 12 Twin Mk 22 Mod 0 turrets, which put together mean she has 8 barrels of anti-surface firepower where most other destroyers have four or five barrels (only the British Tribals and French Mogadors can compete on raw firepower). However, the Mk 22 mount she has lacks the great elevation of most other guns in the 5"/38 Mk 12 family and her guns are thus unable to engage aircraft.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named after Richard Somers, famous for his martyrdom at Tripoli during the First Barbary War.
  • Superior Successor: In terms of weight capacity, to pretty much all other American destroyers circa 1939 except McDougal.
  • Wine Is Classy: Asks "Is it time for wine?" in an hourly line.

Light Cruisers (CL)

     Brooklyn-class
The class as a whole contains examples of:
  • Lightning Bruiser: In addition to their incredible firepower for light cruisers, they're also among the best-armored light cruisers around, with more armor than many heavy cruisers, and they accomplish both of these without sacrificing speed.
  • More Dakka: Brooklyn-class cruisers, along with the St. Louis subclass, carry a staggering 15 6-inch rifles (five triple turrets), which gives them far and away the best firepower of any light cruisers in the 1939 start date.

Nashville (CL-43)

Voiced by: Tia Ballard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/150_big_9.jpeg
Brassy. Independent. Sarcastic.
"Cap, what would I have done without you? The name's Nashville, and I'd be happy to join your fleet - supposing you don't mind my music-playing, of course."

Belle of the light cruiser Nashville. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

Boise (CL-47)

Voiced by: Brittany Lauda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/boise_2.jpeg
Tough. Unstoppable.
"Gosh, Captain, you're something else! Of course, I could've handled the situation with a little more time, but thanks all the same. The name's Boise!"

Belle of the light cruiser Boise. Originally only accessible as a starter Belle to Kickstarter and PayPal backers, but eventually made available for all players as part of the game's first anniversary.

  • Fiery Redhead:
  • Hunter Trapper: Incredibly skilled at hunting, both with a firearm and a bow and arrow.
  • Nemean Skinning: Although implied through the fur trimmings her uniform has in her default design, Boise straight up wears a skinned raccoon for a hat in one of her costumes.

     St. Louis-class

St. Louis (CL-49)

Voiced by: Kristi Rothrock

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/156_big_0.jpeg
Dauntless. Tomboy.
"Captain, Captain! I may be young, but I know a good leader when I see one! I'm St. Louis, and if you're in need of planes, I have them in abundance."

Belle of the light cruiser St. Louis. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • More Dakka: Like her half-sisters in the Brooklyn-class, St. Louis has 15 6-inch rifles, which gives her some of the best firepower of any light cruiser around. On top of this, she has significantly more powerful secondaries, trading the Brooklyns' 5"/25 anti-air guns for 5"/38 rifles in dual-purpose twin mounts.

Heavy Cruisers (CA)

     Pensacola-class

Pensacola (CA-24)

Voiced by: Sabra May

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/185_big_0.jpeg
Cynical. Alert. Drill-Happy.
"So you're the one everybody's talking about, huh? I'm Pensacola, Captain - now let's see what you've got."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Pensacola. Available for rescue in the first half of the 1939 September event.

  • Shown Their Work: Her design and voice actress. Look into the history of the actual city—the original inhabitants of the area were Native Americannote  and the background of her voice actress (Asian/Native American).

Salt Lake City (CA-25)

Voiced by: Michelle Rojas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salt_lake_city_3.jpeg
Scrappy. Tenacious.
"What an incredible fight, Captain! I'm Salt Lake City, and I think, between the two of us, we could show those Morganas a thing or two."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Salt Lake City. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

     Northampton-class
The class as a whole gives examples of:
  • Glass Cannon: The Northampton-class are pretty much the pinnacle of heavy cruisers who are only heavy in armament. They have barely two inches of armor, which is absolutely hopeless against their own guns, or even those of light cruisers.

Houston (CA-30)

Voiced by: Felecia Angelle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/houston_8.jpeg
Tough. Reliable.
"Well, Captain, you really know how to teach those Morganas a lesson, don't you? The name's Houston, and I think we'll get along real well."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Houston. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Everything is Big in Texas: Houston is a walking Texan stereotype. She dresses like a cowgirl, speaks in a Texan drawl, and enjoys drinking beer and shooting guns.

Augusta (CA-31)

Voiced by: Dawn M. Bennett

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/augusta_2.jpeg
Gracious. Charming.
"Captain, this lady will forever be in your debt. My name is Miss Augusta, and if I can be of service to you in any way, just say the word."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Augusta. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • I Hate Past Me: When pressed about her namesake, Augusta admits she considers Princess Augusta a failure whose name only serves to link two kings. Her efforts to bring people together against the Morgana comes largely from a desire to avoid a life as helpless as the princess who never became a queen.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Named after the city of Augusta, Georgia which in turn is named in honor of Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Princess of Wales and mother of King George III.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Augusta expresses dismay at talk of slashing her budget when word of a spy leaking her movements causes her guests to get cold feet. After drowning her sorrows in a little bourbon and some encouragement from the captain, she is determined to find the culprit.
  • Parasol of Pain: Threatens the enemy with the business end of her parasol in battle.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: As befitting a young lady sailing in sunny environs.
  • The Social Expert: Augusta hosts social gatherings aboard her ship in order to drum up international support for the war against the Morgana, bumping shoulders with such dignitaries as ambassadors, Japanese admirals, and an archbishop. When the captain is surprised by her intuitive grasp of tactics, she brushes it off as misdirection and reading the room.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Augusta's insistence on throwing parties for dignitaries aboard, going into battle with said guests aboard, collecting a menagerie, and disappearing from formation without explanation initially causes no shortage of headaches for her more straight-laced captain. In time, Augusta's behavior is explained to not to be out of vanity but her own way of enticing the movers and shakers of the world to see the Morgana War for themselves and get involved.
  • Southern Belle: Augusta is perhaps the only rival to Mississippi in embodying the classic Southern socialite.

     New Orleans-class

New Orleans (CA-32)

Voiced by: Cassie Ewulu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/new_orleans_0.jpeg
Vivacious. Jubilant.
"What a show you put on out there. Captain! And I'm New Orleans - if any Belle knows a show when she sees one, it's me."

Belle of the heavy cruiser New Orleans. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • The Big Easy: Easygoing and always up for a party, she embodies much of the qualities her namesake is well-known for.

     Astoria-class

Astoria (CA-34)

Voiced by: Marissa Lenti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/victory_belles_astoria.png
Vivacious. Charismatic. Merciless.
"Quite the rescue, and it didn't cost me a dime - perfect! I'm Astoria. You want to win this war and get rich doing it?"

Belle of the heavy cruiser Astoria. Available as a bundle-only Belle in the 1940 February event.

Minneapolis (CA-36)

Voiced by: Molly Elizabeth Ring

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/196_big_6.jpeg
Polite. Outdoorsy. Hospitable.
"Uff da! Those Morganas are no joke. You'd better stick with me, Captain. I'm Minneapolis - make yourself at home!"

Belle of the heavy cruiser Minneapolis. Available for rescue in the second half of the 1939 November event.

     Wichita-class

Wichita (CA-45)

Voiced by: Samara Naeymi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wichita_9.jpeg
Tenacious. Attentive.
"And to think, I nearly lost my opportunity to see more of the world. I owe you, Captain. My crew and I both. Call me Wichita."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Wichita. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Born Lucky: Wichita notes that she's always been considered a lucky ship and Leberecht Maas is amazed by her own ability to avoid routine misfortune while aboard Wichita as their good and bad luck seem to cancel each other out.
  • Hot Witch: With her hat, ruby slippers, and broomstick rigging, her design is definitely witch-like, particularly bringing to mind the Wicked Witch of the East from The Wizard of Oz. More than a few characters do make note of that in the Kickstarter interviews.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Wichita actually possesses a reasonable amount of armor relative to the size of her guns, making her one of the few pre-WWII heavy cruisers to avoid being a Glass Cannon.
  • Military Mashup Machine: Downplayed. Describes herself as existing because someone "thought it might be nice to mash up a New Orleans-class cruiser with a Brooklyn-class cruiser." Doing so led to the Lightning Bruiser status above.
  • Shout-Out: Her design takes more than a few cues from The Wizard of Oz, and particularly the Wicked Witch of the East's striped stockings and ruby slippers and extrapolates with features like a witch hat similar to the Wicked Witch of the West's. Her alternate costume instead takes inspiration from Glinda, the Good Witch of the South.
  • Superior Successor: Bigger guns than the Brooklyns (which were classified as light cruisers due to carrying 6"/152mm guns), and actual armor as opposed to the Nonindicative Name "heavy" cruisers of the New Orleans-class.

Training Battleship (TBB)

     Mockup Dreadnought

Recruit

Voiced by: Sandra Espinoza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/183_big_9.jpeg
Charming. Charismatic. Jealous.
"Fine work, Captain - and when I'm done with your crew, they'll be the finest! Recruit's the name. Let's teach the other girls a thing or two."

Belle of the training "ship" Recruit. Given to the player as part of the game's initial tutorial.

  • Berserk Button: Downplayed, but calling her anything other than a battleship (a true battleship, not a training one) puts her in Tranquil Fury at best.
  • Crutch Character: She has some of the biggest guns available at the start of the game, and enough health to tank many early game Morgana. Once you have true cruisers, though, her advantages fall off, and she's likely to be relegated to cruises to get the most out of her Experience Booster nature.
  • Experience Booster: Having her in a fleet boosts experience gains by same-fleet Belles below her level, especially on cruises.
  • Insistent Terminology: Do not call her anything other than a full battleship. She does not take it well.
  • Lethal Joke Character: For reasons that are not entirely apparent her guns, despite being little more than painted logs, fire as if they were real naval rifles.
  • Mighty Glacier: Subverted - she might be a battleship and have the performance characteristics of a New York-class battleship, including their plodding 21 knot pace, and she has 14" rifles, but her armor and rifles are wooden, so she functionally has almost no armor, and her rifles only hit about as hard as light cruiser guns (roughly consistent with the mass of a 14" shell carved out of oak).
  • Paper Tiger: Compared to proper battleships. Recruit has very little armor (being made of wood and all), she is slow, and her guns perform on par with light cruisers despite being 14"/356mm in diameter.
  • Starter Equipment: Regardless of the player's chosen nation, all receive her as part of the game's introductory tutorial.
  • Well Done, Battleship! Gal: She really, really wants to be acknowledged as a real battleship despite originating from a wooden training "land-ship." Her in-game story even references it, saying "Recruit is a true battleship, and she's out to prove it!"

Battleships (BB)

     As a Whole
The following tropes apply to many or all US battleships.
  • Mighty Glacier: The US "standard-type" battleship focused on firepower and protection at the expense of speed. At the 1939 start of the game, all US battleships are "standards" (though later fast battleships became Lightning Bruisers instead).

     New York-class

Texas (BB-35)

Voiced by: Unknown

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/199_big.jpeg
Easygoing. Loyal. Fierce.
"Much obliged, Cap. I reckon I owe you a few. the name's Texas, and the horse is Bluebonnet. Don't let him scare you none."

Belle of the battleshipTexas. Available for rescue in the second half of the 1939 December event.

     Nevada-class

Nevada (BB-36)

Voiced by: Macy Edwards

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/152_big_6.jpeg
Lucky. Cheerful.
"The cards were stacked against me until you showed up, weren't they, Captain? Well, I'm just thankful you showed up when you did. You can call me Nevada."

Belle of the battleship Nevada. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • The Big Race: Proposes an endurance-themed fundraiser in which members of the public chip in for every mile their preferred Belle steams.
  • The Casino: Frequently discussed in her lines which reference luck, cards, chance, and other gambling-related words. This is because...
  • Fall of the House of Cards: Discussed as she challenges her interviewer (Mahan) to a contest of building said houses of cards.
  • The Gambler: In her interview, it's noted she turns almost everything into a betting opportunity.
  • Hard Head: Exploited in her First Look interview.
The point of Baseball Assassin is to bean the other player in the head with a baseball. Not ideal for human players, obviously, but us Belles can get away with it.
  • Las Vegas: For the two people who aren't aware, Las Vegas is in the state of Nevada.
  • Professional Gambler: "Half of the American Belles owe her money. The other half refuse to play her, because they don’t want to owe her money."

     Pennsylvania-class

Arizona (BB-39)

Voiced by: Amber Lee Connors

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/43_big_2.jpeg
Tough. Happy. Dependable.
"Well, I'll be, Captain! If you hadn't come around when you did, I would have been in for it, huh? The name's Arizona - it's a pleasure meeting you."

Belle of the battleship Arizona. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • The Pioneer: Arizona has elements of this in her design. She also calls herself "half pioneer, half Navajo" in her interview.

     New Mexico-class

Mississippi (BB-41)

Voiced by: Alexis Tipton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/148_big_8.jpeg
Graceful. Elegant.
"Dear Captain, to jeopardize your life for that of myself and my crew... well, it speaks very highly of your character. It's an honor meeting you - I'm Mississippi."

Belle of the battleship Mississippi. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Regal Ringlets: She does her blond hair in ringlets, tied up by a blue ribbon, and basically embodies the aristocratic archetype of the Southern Belle.
  • Southern Belle: Puns aside, Mississippi is the very picture of a Southern socialite, with a fondness for parasols, banquets, large dresses, and in case you forget she's a battleship, larger cannons.

Aircraft Carriers (CV)

     Lexington-class

Lexington (CV-2)

Voiced by: Megan Emerick

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/144_big_9.jpeg
Brave. Energetic.
"Captain, you remind me quite a bit of the protagonist in one of my stories. In a good way! I promise. The name's Lexington - it's a pleasure meeting you!"

Belle of the aircraft carrier Lexington. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Lexington has salmon pink hair, tied in twintails, and is quite chipper in general.

     Yorktown-class

Enterprise (CV-6)

Voiced by: Cristina Valenzuela

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/159_big_6.jpeg
Bold. Determined.
"Captain, I'm Enterprise. I think it's in both our best interests that we found each other today - with your leadership and my planes, we'll be unstoppable."

Belle of the aircraft carrier Enterprise. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

Submarines (SS)

     V-class

Argonaut (SM-1)

Voiced by: Alex Moore

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/42_big.jpeg
Self-Indulgent. Glamorous.
"Come, Captain, sit, luxuriate with me. I'm Argonaut, and if there's one thing I know, it's always best to enjoy oneself after a battle."

Belle of the submarine Argonaut. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Fluffy Fashion Feathers: Argonaut wears arm warmers that resemble a golden feathered boa, as fitting with her glamorous personality.

Narwhal (SS-167)

Voiced by: Amanda Lee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/narwhal_4.jpeg
Cheerful. Quirky.
"Captain, oh Captain! I'm Narwhal. What a battle that was! A dazzling display of gunfire, if I do say so myself. Here, would you like a cloudberry?"

Belle of the submarine Narwhal. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Animal Motifs: Has a tusk growing from her head like the animal she's named for.
  • Animal Theme Naming: Narwhals.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: When Narwhal is the Belle of the Day and your fleet enters the Arctic: "Oh yeah, these are Narwhal friendly waters right here! They'd probably freeze the rest of you to death though, so...be careful."
  • Cleavage Window: At the top of her skintight suit.
  • Most Common Superpower: Barely contained, with bonus Cleavage Window.
  • Obsessed with Food: Two lines make it very clear Narwhal is extremely fond of food:
    • If the player navigates to the store while Narwhal is the Belle of the Day, she asks "What are we buying? Is it exotic? Can we eat it?"
    • An hourly line: "The work is done, I'm bored, and I'm hungry. Why is it not dinnertime yet?"
  • Sensual Spandex: Wears a skintight swimsuit.

Nautilus (SS-168)

Voiced by: Morgan Berry

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nautilus_4.jpeg
Well-intentioned. Scatterbrained.
"Oh gosh, I was very nearly sunk back there, wasn't I? Which means, I owe you big time, don't I? Thanks so much, Cap! You can call me Nautilus."

Belle of the submarine Nautilus. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Seashell Bra: An interesting example since she wears what seems to be halved nautilus shells rather than the typical scallop shells.
