A hundred years ago, the Empire of Japan was isolated and inward-looking - and then Western powers kicked in their door, and they realized they would either have to modernize or to become accustomed to subservience.

They made their choice.

A modern, militarized Japan seized control of Taiwan, Korea, and the nearest chunk of the Sakhalin archipelago - and now Manchuria. They mean to keep Asia in Asian hands, beating foreign imperialists - and Morganas - at their own game.

Voiced by: N/A

     Yūbari-class

Yūbari

Voiced by: Unknown

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/98_big_2.jpeg
Outgoing. Adventurous.

Belle of the light cruiser Yūbari. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Foreign Culture Fetish: She has one for the US, especially for its cowboys. Most of her impressions of the country come from Westerns, and she loves it. This goes to the extent of affecting an American accent most of the time.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Under particularly stressful situations, Yubari drops the American accent and speaks more neutral Japanese.
  • The Wild West: Played with as Yūbari is obviously not American, but loves and holds a heavily romanticized version of that time period, with her wearing a cowboy hat and tasseled chaps in her design.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/93_big_1.jpeg

Adventurous. Inquisitive.
"That's some good looking gear you have there, Kanchou! The name's Aoba, and if ever you'd like to give that gear an update, I'm your girl."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Aoba. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Combat Hand Fan: Her two fans form part of her rigging, and are armed with naval guns.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: Aoba has one for the West in general, to the point in which her sister begins to doubt her loyalty, as mentioned in her interview. She also may or may not have a crush on Flash Gordon.
  • Celeb Crush: Has one on Buster Crabbe, American champion Olympic swimmer and the actor who plays Flash Gordon in the films. In her interview she swoons over his arms and says she wants to measure his biceps "for science" and in her story when she is confronted about it by the captain she becomes flustered and embarrassed.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/186_big.jpeg

Belle of the heavy cruiser Ashigara. Available for rescue in the first half of the 1939 September event.

  • Delinquent Hair: Subverted. Her hair is naturally blonde, not dyed to represent some kind of rebellion (dyed blonde in Japan would be considered such if done intentionally).
  • Japanese Delinquents: Between the blonde hair, her manner of speaking, and literally running a Yakuza organization—she definitely qualifies.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She has what seems to be natural wolf ears and a tail, in line with her nickname of the "Hungry Wolf".
  • Sarashi: She wears one under her kimono to boost her Yakuza-like image.
  • Yakuza: She sports the characteristic tattoos associated with the Yakuza for good reason, being an Ane-san.

     Takao-class

Takao

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/takao_4.jpeg
Stoic. Spiritual.
"I've rarely met a warrior who made such an impression upon me, Kanchou. I am Takao, and together, I believe we will make the Morganas bow to our wills."

     Mogami-class

Kumano

Voiced by: Hitomi Farrell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kumano_3.jpeg
Clever. Crafty.
"Aren't you the clever one, Kanchou? I'm Kumano. I'll stick with you for a while... I'd like to get a better idea of how your mind works."

Belle of the heavy cruiser Kumano. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • Loophole Abuse: The entire reason for her class's existence is to exploit that the London Naval Treaty only limited the number of heavy cruisers each country could have (defined by being armed with guns over 155mm/6.1" in caliber). By building the Mogami-class as "light" cruisers with 155mm guns, Japan planned to functionally exceed its legal cap on heavy cruisers by designing them to have their 155mm guns swapped out for 203mm guns as soon as war began. The game represents them as they were armed in 1939 but classifies them by their true intended role of heavy cruisers rather than their official classification as light cruisers.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Her classification as heavy cruiser suggests she should have larger guns than her 155mm guns. However, as rescued in 1939, Kumano is still in the Loophole Abuse phase of the Mogami-class's lives, but classified as her intended actual role as a heavy cruiser.

     Tone-class

Chikuma

Voiced by: N/A

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chikuma.jpeg

Belle of the seaplane tender Chiyoda. Available for rescue at the 1939 start of the game.

  • "Just So" Story: Shortly after awakening, Chiyoda engaged a Morgana destroyer and set its deck and conning tower on fire before it ran. Some Japanese officers believe this is how the Morgana Fire became Fire.
