    Recurring Notable NPCs

Fala Jin

  • Changing of the Guard: She is the daughter of a prominent NPC from the Violet Arc, Kalla'Jin, and a yet-to-be-confirmed player character.
  • Church Militant: As a Cleric of Fate and Inquisitor.
  • Combat Medic: When she fights alongside the party of "The Final Toll", she largely defaults to buffing and healing the party, though she has also been shown to be quite capable at fighting directly as well.
  • Deal with the Devil: A minor and indirect example. In "The Final Toll", she provides Londis Le Strange, a representative of the Gambler Black, with information on Brewbad Stormfinger's whereabouts in exchange for Londis opening the Fable that the party needed access to.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: She's a cleric, but is shown to be in full plate armor, minus a helmet.
  • Mr. Exposition: Her presence often involves her providing the party of the current campaign with information on important matters.
  • Spirited Competitor: In "Into the Mists", she's shown eagerly taking on Wild Wanda in arm wrestling.

    Garlic Crouton

Garlic

Art by Kenha604

Player: PeachJars
Race: Centaur
Class: Fighter
——

  • Cross Player: The female PeachJars plays the male Garlic.
  • The Ditz: He's not especially bright; when in dangerous areas, the rest of the party occasionally has to work to keep his impulsiveness in check.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: After his experience at the brothel (which he left a virgin), Garlic frequently, and awkwardly, lies about how he had sex, fooling no one.
  • Momma's Boy: Garlic frequently references his mother, and follows what she says very dutifully. Among her rules are "Don't talk to promiscuous women" and "Don't drink alcohol".
  • No Social Skills: Garlic has difficulty interacting with new people and gets nervous easily.
  • The Teetotaler: Very explicit about not drinking alcohol.

    Talis

Race: Dragonborn
Class: Paladin (Oathbreaker)

    Yukina

Art by wenzuki

Player Seviria
Race: Kitsune
Class: Wizard (Enchantment)
——

  • Disney Villain Death: She very narrowly avoids one when attempting to cross an icy bridge, and a whole string of bad rolls results in her slipping and falling off of it. Fortunately, she had the Feather Fall spell handy, which allowed her to slow her descent enough for Obu to snatch her from midair and return her to safety.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Well, Hypnotic Gaze actually, but same idea.
  • Little Bit Beastly: As a Kitsune, she has the ears, fangs, and tails.
  • Magic Missile Storm: Magic Missile is one of her go-to attacking spells.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Flirtatious and wears revealing clothing.
  • Not a Morning Person: Sevira specifically describes her as this.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Yukina is 169 years old.
  • The Smart Guy: Any information that requires an Arcana check usually falls to her to uncover, given her +5 to such checks and her tendency to roll high with them. While the party is exploring the mountain facility, she spends much of that time working alongside Minshi Sho to work out what was being done there.
  • Squishy Wizard: Her prowess and squishiness (no, not that kind) are both shown in the party's first combat encounter, when she promptly One Hit Kills one enemy in her first turn, but then is brought down herself by a different enemy's first attack on her.

    Kiliwen Joy

Kiliwen

Player: Pokket
Race: Dhampir
Class: Warlock (Evil Eye)
Deity: The Evil Eye later Babylon
——

    Baeth Wellington

Baeth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baeth___low_quality_temp.png

Player: Meowri
Race: Minotaur
Class: Barbarian (Berserker)
Deity: Cassius
——

  • The Berserker: Naturally, as a Berserker Barbarian, especially in his frequent use of his Rage and Reckless Attacks.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: A shameless flirt, but is the first to go to the front lines in combat.
  • Cross Player: The female Meowri plays the very male Baeth.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His clan was wiped out by a curse, one which forced him in particular to devour his family.
  • Does Not Like Magic: Thanks to the curse he and his clan faced in his backstory. While it doesn't affect his treatment of people of utilize magic all that much, he is particularly wary of unknown objects that are clearly magical in nature.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: He has shades of this. Played for Laughs in one case where a particularly bad Investigation check is played off in-character as him getting distracted by a mirror.
  • Kick the Dog / Kick The Son Of A Bitch: His mugging Minshi Sho for just about everything he had and then tying him up while the party explored the dungeon they found him in straddles the line on this. On the one hand, he works for the Eclipse, and he's most likely the reason that they had been able to travel through the Mists when no one else could, allowing them to pose a threat to western Glies. On the other, it's not clear how much he supports or is even aware of how his research is being used by them; he also posed no threat to the party at the time and was even actively trying to help them.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Hot and he knows it.
  • The Navigator: As a Minotaur, he has a supernatural sense that allows him to easily find his way through mazes. This comes in very handy when the party ends up in one leading up to the Final Boss.
  • Punny Name: Beef wellington.
  • There Was a Door: He has a bit of a habit of entering seemingly abandoned buildings by breaking in through a window. This is usually followed by his party members simply using a nearby door to do the same.

    Vasily

Vasily

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vasily_0.jpg

Player: Bluejay
Race: Siren (Medusa)
Class: Cleric (Redemption)
Deity: Vavren
——

  • Combat Medic: Is the source of much of the party's healing, but is also quick to put herself on the front lines.
  • Emotion Eater: Vasily feeds off of peoples' despair.
  • Gorgeous Gorgon: As a Medusa Siren who receives her share of attention.
  • Human Notepad: Following her successfully sealing away an outbreak of Otikata's power emanating from a piece of parchment, the words that had been on that parchment get branded onto her left arm, which turns out to be an agreement that had previously been made between Otikata and the Pale Emperor.
  • In the Hood: Is stated to wear one when she's not yet certain that she's in an area accepting of her kind.
  • Kick the Dog: While she is normally a very kind and empathetic person, she does still need despair to sustain herself, and so when coming across someone in the throes of such feelings, she's not above prodding them to deepen those emotions further to provide herself more to feed on.
  • Official Couple: With Talis
  • Only Sane Man: Generally acts as the straight woman to most of the party's shenanigans.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Her Spirit Weapon takes the form of a large snake.
  • Support Party Member: She has a variety of buffs and heals that she uses to bolster the party.
  • Team Mom: She serves as a sensible and caring voice for the party.
  • Tunnel King: As a Medusa, she has this ability.

     Notable NPCs

Captain Rembarand

  • Mr. Exposition: When the party returns him to Alexandria, he provides information on the cult going into the mists that the party would then be tasked with investigating.
  • Paper Talisman: He uses these to keep the building that he, and later the party, hides out in safe from the creatures in the mist.
  • Sole Survivor: The only one still alive in the outpost that the party initially set out to find.

Koka and Yoka

  • The Corruption: As Yokai who have transformed into Akuma, which is notable given how Obu points out that Bao-Bao are usually particularly resistant to that. Given that picking up one of their horns caused Kiliwen to come into contact with Babylon, it's implied that he was somehow involved.
  • Dual Boss: They are fought together, and effectively share the same hit pool.
  • Fire/Ice Duo: Koka being the fire one, and Yoka being the ice one.
  • Smug Snake: Literally, being rather smug snake-like beings. Less so after a particularly nasty smite-infused javelin throw from Talis.
  • Snake People: They are both Bao-Bao Akuma, and so have a Naga-esque look.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Their Apex Blast.

Minshi Sho

  • Bat People: As a Tearn.
  • Enemy Scan: He provides advice on enemies to the party in battle, represented mechanically by his presence granting them advantage on Martial Checks.
  • Helpful Mook: He's working for the Eclipse, which have been largely an antagonistic force, but he himself is friendly and helpful to the party.
  • Mr. Exposition: When the party brings him along as they explore the dungeon where they found him, he provides a great deal of additional information on the things that they find.
  • Non-Action Guy: He admits that he's not a fighter, which was why most of the dungeon where the party finds him had gone unexplored before their arrival. When Baeth mugs him, there's not much he can do about it.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Out of the overall story, he has only appeared in a small part of the "Into the Mists" campaign thus far, but he is most likely the one who found a path through the Mists for the Eclipse, an act which has resulted in a considerable amount of conflict in the overarching Glies storyline.

Obu Uzuki

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Not him, but when Baeth makes a crack about the numerous eyes across his arms, his Yokai mother found it amusing and high-fives him.
  • The Cameo: He also makes a brief appearance in "Shrine of Sin", during which he provides Kenji with some background information on both Onimetsu and Yozai, as well as oversees a power-up that Kenji receives through his Yozai heritage. This appearance ends with him being dispatched by Iho Sukata to locate the "Into the Mists" party.
  • Combat Medic: He seems to be primarily focused on his martial prowess, but also proves capable of very effectively patching up Garlic after he takes a few bad hits.
  • Declaration of Protection: Agrees to Yukina's request to act as her meat shield. During the battle against the Mistbirths and Mistcallers in particular, he devotes a considerable portion of his efforts specifically towards keeping her safe.
  • Demon Slaying: He turns out to be an Onimetsu, which ends up coming in handy when the party comes across a pair of boss-level Akuma shortly after meeting him.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: He is a travelling samurai when party first meets him.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: As a Yozai, he has spirit arms, which in his specific case are covered in red eyes. There are even eyes on his sword.
  • Flash Step: He does this to demonstrate to the group what he's capable of bringing should they hire him, which is successful in convincing them to do so.
  • Flying Face: His Yokai mother, who has Prehensile Hair that allows her to interact with things, though she leaves that kind of thing to Obu most of the time.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: The party hires him to join them in their quest.
  • Paper Talisman: As an Onimetsu, he makes use of these.
  • Parent-Child Team: He travels with his Yokai mother, who hasn't been named.
  • Praetorian Guard: He mentioned having previously served as the personal guard for the Daimyo of the Fruit Fly Clan.
  • Prehensile Hair: His Yokai mother's hair is quite adept at this, proving capable of a variety of applications.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Fish. He's first drawn to the party when they're cooking some, and Baeth convinces him to lower his cost for his services by offering to make him more.

The Purging One

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: It's an advanced alien artificial intelligence tasked with producing and controlling the mist, but has become corrupted due to the Depthar, which it wasn't designed to deal with.
  • Big Bad: Of "Into the Mists".
  • Cannot Tell a Lie: As a computer, it has no ability for deception.
  • Failed a Spot Check: It doesn't seem to notice at first that the human crew assigned to it, who were kept in cryostasis pods around it, are all long dead.
  • Machine Speak: Naturally, an artificial intelligence would communicate like this.
  • Oculothorax: It's a giant eyeball with arms behind it and a face for its pupil.
  • Turned Against Their Masters: It killed off its human crew, presumably due to being corrupted.
  • Turns Red: When the party exposes its inner core. However, Kiliwen was able to use a device to engage it in a Clash that destroys said core and immediately disables it before it can do anything further.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Its Purge attack.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Its main directive is to cleanse "the infection" and doesn't care too much about local wildlife that might be affected in the process. Especially when it begins to activate "Phase 2", intended to be a full culling of Glies.

SIMP

  • Aloof Ally: He's not really happy about getting dragged into the party's shenanigans. As Arcadum put it:
Arcadum: This creature is not trying to deceive anyone. It does not mean you any harm, but it doesn't give a shit about you.
  • Berserk Button: He really doesn't like it when people do not speak of Babylon, his master, with what he feels is proper respect.
  • Eyeless Face: His horns are where his eyes would be.
  • Familiar: He is Kiliwen's.
  • Fun with Acronyms: SIMP is short for Silly IMP.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His actual name is Menzanbozakar, but Kiliwen decided that was too long, so she just calls him SIMP.
  • Pocket Dimension: He's capable of summoning an entrance to one set up like a comfortable cabin.
  • Servile Snarker: He is absolutely done with Kiliwen pretty much the moment he's summoned, and he does not hesitate to make that clear.
  • Supreme Chef: He proves surprisingly capable of cooking for the party.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: He's capable of transforming into a handbag, to allow for being transported by Kiliwen more easily.

Lost at Sea

    Coots Robin

Coots

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coots_1.png
Art by KhangAFK

Player: Ludwig
Race: Halfling
Class: Monk
Deity: Sekelcuse
——

  • Achievements in Ignorance: For a character whose greatest dream is to become capable of flight, it's rather fortuitous that he chose to travel to Glies of all places, despite not being aware that kites are the primary mode of transportation there.
  • All-Loving Hero: Is an especially friendly person, and quickly establishes bonds with the rest of the party, with Stinkler through the fact that he was raised by Goliaths, with Dirst through their shared short statures, and with Mori through his admiration of the latter's ability to fly. He's more confused by the Goker, but is friendly with him as well.
  • Cherry Tapping: Coots finishes off the Steward of Rot with one well-placed Dart to the head, after the Goker brought it down to a single hit point by throwing his guitar at it.
  • Flight: One of his greatest dreams is to become capable of this. He naturally idolizes Mori as a result, who informs him about kites being the primary mode of travel in Glies, and would later train him in how to use them.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His main weapon outside of his bare hands.
  • Mercy Kill: He delivers a sneak attack to Afalia, unaware that she was a noncombatant until he One Hit Kills her with it. Given the state that she was implied to be in, it's arguable that his actions could count as this, and Mori consoles him by pointing out that likelihood after the fact.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: He attempts to Trash Talk the Steward of Rot throughout the battle with it, though his shakiness undermines the effect a bit. He eventually manages to get a confident line off just before delivering the attack that finishes it.
Coots: Hey, Steward of Rot! Go fuck yourself!
  • Raised by Natives: Possibly. He was raised by Goliaths, though his backstory has yet to go into detail as to how exactly this came to happen.
  • Stealth Expert: Upon gaining his Way of the Shadow Monastic Tradition, he's able to cloak himself and his party.
  • Swiss-Army Weapon: When the party returns pieces of the Splittree to Greenbramble to have items crafted from them, Coots has his turned into a staff that can convert into a kite.
  • Throwing the Distraction: When the party first arrives at the Geckoi village, he throws a rock behind Bright-Eyes when Goker randomly prompts him to do so. He would later use this trick to allow the party to get past the Sactified Hydra.
    That's just distracting!
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: A very trusting person, probably best shown when he gives a potion to The Goker... immediately after he had just drank one of his own for no reason other than liking the taste.

    Dirst the First

Dirst

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dirst_1.png

Player: Takahata101
Race: Goblin
Class: Cleric of the Coin
Deity: Nero
——

  • Con Man: At the least has aspirations to be one. When a group of Geckoi show the party paper talismans that they use to ward off corruption, his first thought is to create counterfeits of them to sell.
  • Designated Point Man: When a situation comes up where someone needs to scout ahead, he's usually the one who gets pushed into doing it.
  • Expy: Has been stated to be one to Quark, though Takahata101 is also prone to making the occasional reference to the goblins of WarCraft.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his occasional abrasiveness and Only in It for the Money attitude, he takes no issue when the party opts to take an additional risk in the effort to do the right thing, and will often put himself on the line to help his party, even if he usually scurries back to a safe distance afterward.
  • Only in It for the Money: Is on the voyage in the first place in search of money-making opportunities, and introduces himself as a healer for hire.
  • Power is Sexy: He seems to think so, as brought up in one conversation when he mentioned being attracted to dragons, not due to anything about their physical appearances, but just because they're powerful.
  • Prone to Vomiting: Had already thrown up multiple times before characters introductions were even over. This was presumably due to seasickness, as it doesn't come up again after the shipwreck, with the remainder of the campaign taking place on dry land.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: When the party is faced with the chamber containing the Big Bad of the campaign, Durst tries to turn around and leave, only to slip on a rock and fall backwards into it anyway.note
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Decked out in a nice suit.
  • Support Party Member: While he has a few means of attack, he's mostly set up for healing and support.
  • Turn Undead: He has this spell. Given many of the enemy encounters that the Lost at Sea party deals with, he turns the tide of battle on more than one occasion with this alone.

    The Goker

Goker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goker_1.jpg
Art by mariah_art

Player: videogamedunkey
Race: Geckoi
Class: Jester Bard
——

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Is much more amiable than the character he takes after, taking no issue when Captain Keena Stoneheart puts him to work in the kitchen, and going out of his way to help out his group in combat when they're in trouble.
  • Compulsive Liar: Goker lies frequently, often to make himself seem more impressive.
  • Expy: of The Joker.
  • Finger Gun: The act of him granting Bardic Inspiration to another member of the party is portrayed as him giving them this gesture.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: Goker often attempts to take items for himself.
  • Nausea Fuel: His drinking two potions despite not actually needing them turns out to not be a problem when he demonstrates the ability to regurgitate them back up, with the potions retaining full effectiveness. In one case, directly into Mori's mouth.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: As a Geckoi, he has an especially long, prehensile one.
  • Power Born of Madness: At one point in battle against The Steward of Rot, he was knocked unconscious, but managed to recover on his own through a natural 20 on a Death Save, which is played in-character as invoking this. Then subverted when he's knocked out again shortly afterward.
Madness gave you life, but the body is weak.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Being who he is, he's naturally clad in a nice tux.
  • Shock and Awe: With his Thunder Wave spell.
  • Signature Instrument: A guitar that he had gotten made from a piece of the Splittree when the party returned them to Greenbramble. Until he throws it at the Steward of Rot as his last attack against it before Coots finishes it off.
  • Sizeshifter: He's capable of invoking this with his Enlarge spell, usually on Mori.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: With his 'Speak with Animals' spell. It sees a fair bit of use, such as completely bypassing combat with a massive snakelike creature by determining that it was simply hungry and convincing it to eat most of the party's rations instead of trying to hunt them, or convincing a bunch of leeches to detach from him.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Potions. As the party gets ahold of increasingly valuable varieties, they explicitly note that they have to keep them away from Goker.
He has a taste for it now!
  • Trash Talk: Weaponized with 'Vicious Mockery'.
  • Wild Card: Will often do odd or ill-advised things, such as drinking two potions when he wasn't even damaged or in any immediate danger, leaping into a deep well just after being saved from falling into it, or attempting to finish a battle by performing a Fastball Special with Coots, only to accidentally drop him into the hole where they had most of the enemies trapped instead. To his credit, whenever he causes a mess with his antics, he's typically quick to help clean things back up again.

    Mori Suzuki

Mori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mori_5.png

Player: Edward Bosco
Race: Tearn
Class: Fighter/Samurai
——

  • Baritone of Strength: Decidedly badass, with a deep voice to match.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: Definitely leans into this look.
  • Flight: Is capable of it as a Tearn, though at the start of the campaign, wind conditions in the area meant that he had to take special precautions in order to make use of it.
  • Informed Ability: Poked fun at in the first battle of the campaign, where his status as a skilled, badass samurai was marred by his utter inability to land a hit on a zombienote . While he continues to get the occasional string of bad luck later, he also gets more impressive showings to balance them out.
  • Keep the Reward: When the party returns pieces of the Splittree to Greenbramble to have items crafted from them, Mori had intended to use his to have an item made for Coots. When Coots renders that unnecessary by getting the idea of requesting a staff capable of converting to a kite, Mori opts to do this with his piece instead.
  • The Mentor: Throughout the campaign, he plays this role to Coots in particular.
  • Phrase Catcher: "He's so cool!"
  • Team Dad: Will prod the party to get back on track on the odd occasion where it's called for. This also extends to his player to some extent, as he already had significant D&D experience prior to this campaign, and so would often provide advice to his fellow players.
  • The Stoic: Says as little as possible, and spends most of the character introductions leaning against a wall in an extremely cool fashion.

    Stinkler Smelgore

Stinkler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stinkler_1_3.jpg
Art by biorange

Player: MoistCr1TiKaL
Race: Goliath
Class: Wild Magic Sorcerer
——

  • Bad Liar: When he is being held by the Black Silver Syndicate and questioned by Bota Freezefingers, his attempts to bluff are undermined by his poor Deception rolls. Funnily enough, when he decides to simply be completely honest instead, that manages to win the Yozai over.
Bota Freezefingers: You have told the truth about one thing; you are a terrible liar.
  • The Big Guy: Literally, as a Goliath, and is also one of the most consistently effective members of the party in combat, between his creative use of the environment and his bursts of Wild Magic.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Obtains a hefty mace following the battle with Whitefury.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: His Earth Molding spell.
  • Extreme Omnivore: In keeping with his garbage aesthetic, he tends to default to eating moldy or rotten food. Being around him seems to have resulted in this extending to the rest of the party as well; just after the shipwreck, Stinkler tries to feed them such food to help them recover, and it doesn't bother them much.
  • Gentle Giant: Is a Goliath, and generally comes off as a friendly and helpful, if unhygienic, guy.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Manages to invoke this on the Steward of Rot when he discovered that he could absorb the power of the Rotgates it had been placing to use for himself, allowing him to heal, recover spell slots, and unlock the ability to clash with it.
  • Kick the Dog: While he's overall a Nice Guy, he has a few moments of this, such as withholding several pieces of the Splittree when the Treant at Greenbramble asks for what they recovered, as he wanted to have them crafted into items (though this almost comes back to bite him when it turns out that the Treant was planning to do exactly that anyway), and making some jabs at Coots over killing Afalia when he was clearly already guilty over it.
  • Meaningful Name: See The Pigpen below.
  • Mirror Match: To the Steward of Rot to an extent, due to both being casters that represent filth of some kind. Invoked when Stinkler engages in a clash with it.
  • Oil Slick: His 'Grease' spell is effectively this, and is flammable, to boot..
  • The Pigpen: Given his fixation on and constant collecting of trash, this is a given.
  • Poisonous Person: Has number of poison-related spells, and can augment his Catapult spells with poison damage after taking a rest.
  • Power Fist: When the party returns pieces of the Splittree to Greenbramble to have items crafted from them, Stinkler has his made into a Foci with this form.
  • Power Source: A rather unexpected one in his case, as he derives his power from garbage.
  • Random Effect Spell: His bursts of Wild Magic are effectively this, especially given that the Lost at Sea party took to actively trying to trigger them, due to generally having fairly good luck with the resulting effects.
  • The Strategist: When it comes time for a battle, he tends to be quick to look for some way to gain an advantage for himself and his party, most often with some creative usage of his 'Earth Molding' and/or 'Grease' spells.

Pride of the Nightwolf

     Aero "Hex" Lant'hanum

Hex

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hex_0.png
Art by Deviljno

Player: JoeFudge
Race: Changeling
Class: Warlock (Hexblade)
——

  • Cool Mask: An Oni mask that she normally keeps on her belt, but wears over the lower half of her face while she's in her true form.
  • Cross Player: Zigzagged. The male JoeFudge plays a Changeling, which are by definition all female, but Hex spends most of her time in a male form.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: She likes to present herself as one, even though she obviously isn't.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Many of her plans involve her getting naked for some reason. This would result in some comparisons to Terryn Zabi, another Changeling who spent much of her time pantsless.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form: Primarily takes on the appearance of a male human, despite how Changelings are an all-female race.
  • Sword Beam: Portrays her Eldritch Blast as launching from a swing of her Hexblade.
  • Two-Faced: A variant. Her official character art shows that on the face of her Shapeshifter Default Form, the area around her right eye allows her true Changeling form to show through note .

     Haruko

Haruko

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/haruko_17.png
Art by JoCat

Player: JoCat
Race: Rabbitfolk
Class: Monk (Shinobi)
——

  • Cool Mask: Has an Oni mask that he wears over the lower half of his face.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: He defeated Kang Peon by hurling a bowman at him.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: His main weapon outside of his fists.
  • Righteous Rabbit: Is a member of the Rabbitfolk, and generally acts with honor and empathy.
  • The Stoic: Is generally more calm and reserved than the rest of his party.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Will tend to show empathy toward his enemies, especially Kang Peon when he brought his body along when escaping the Engorged One so that he could give it a proper burial.
  • Warrior Poet: Will sometimes uses poetic statements to provide advice or commentary. Though at least one of these statements he admitted to having learned from a fortune cookie.

     Ryn Lostone

Ryn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryn_lostone.jpg
Art by Magikfire

Player: BrettUltimus
Race: Kobold
Class: Cleric (Twilight)
——

  • Combat Pragmatist: Has no problem suggesting tactics like using the "Hold Person" spell on a dangerous-looking opponent and dropping them into water to drown them while they're immobilized. As it's pointed out, there's a reason he's managed to live so long.
  • Cool Old Guy: Between his shows of wisdom, his array of magic, and his surprising effectiveness with a mace, he more than qualifies.
  • Cower Power: Has this as a Kobold. Funnily, this was first used against a teammate. Following a particularly bad Leeroy Jenkins moment from Sunder, he pretends to cry at the thought of him dying to put him off-guard before walloping him with his mace.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: Very much averted as far as he's concerned. While he wears the armor of one, he hates samurai and their warrior codes, though he makes exceptions for his party members.
  • Innate Night Vision: Not only does he have this himself as a Kobold, but he can grant it to fellow party members via "Eyes of Night".
  • Lunacy: As a Twilight Cleric, his powers are drawn from the moon, and he is particularly enthusiastic about that fact.
    Ryn: I love the moon!
  • Mellow Fellow: Frequently deals with ignorance from others about his being a Kobold, but takes it all in stride, showing little more than the slightest hint of annoyance. There are things that do get to him, though.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: He had a son at one point, who was killed by a samurai. Ryn killed said samurai in response and took his armor and sword.
  • Parental Substitute: Sunder comes to see him as one.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes glow red when he casts offensive spells.
  • Stroke the Beard: Brett portrays him has doing this whenever he does an Enemy Scan or is otherwise in deep thought.
  • Support Party Member: While he's more than happy to drop an attack here and there, his biggest contributions to the party are his considerable array of buffs, debuffs, and heals.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives Sunder a royal earfull after he charges into an overwhelming force despite the fact that the party was trying to run, nearly ruining their attempt to escape.

Sunder

Art by Lunkastry

Player: SciFri
Race: Yozai (Tengu)
Class: Glien Samurai
——

  • Cool Sword: Rogukurībā, and later Wolf Fang.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: SciFri notes at a couple of points that Sunder's character build was geared specifically towards dealing massive burst damage, albeit with a few tricks like Blade Ward as a nod to things like survivability. This actually comes to serve him quite well, especially in the latter half of the campaign, where he deals a significant portion of the party's overall damage.
  • Flaming Sword: With Green-Flame Blade.
  • Honor Before Reason: This is to some extent the reason for his early Leeroy Jenkins tendencies. Even after he gets over that, though, he still holds to this to some degree, such as unfailingly going in for any attack of opportunity presented to him, even when it's likely to be a ploy.
  • In the Hood: Wears a cloak with a hood.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Has a tendency to charge into battle, even when it's ill-advised or there are likely to be better options. He gets better about this after one example of him doing this nearly resulted in disaster and he got a heavy dressing-down from his party about it.
  • Playing with Fire: As a Yozai, he has spirit arms, which in his case are made of fire.
  • Red Baron: Following the events of "Pride of the Nightwolf", the Nightwolf.
  • With Catlike Tread: When the party is attempting to run from an Engorged One while caught in the Mist, Sunder attempts to use Burning Hands on the nearby water to create a concealing cloud of steam to help throw it off. While this technically works, it involved Sunder slinging a very easily-visible sheet of fire around. Several lucky Perception checks from Arcadum later...
Arcadum: Now all of China knows you're here.

     Tori Hayden

Tori

Player: Monty Glu
Race: Human
Class: Ranger
——

  • Badass Bookworm: She's mentioned that she's a travelling Zoologist, and is frequently seeing writing down notes of her observations.
  • Bee-Bee Gun: Her Infestation is represented by a device that launches a swarm of bees at her target.
  • Constantly Curious: Is frequently scribbling observations into a notepad.
  • Cool Mask: Is almost always seen wearing one.
  • Designated Point Man: Will usually be the one scouting ahead via her animal companions.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: With her Shiba Inu, Hiro.
  • Kill Tally: She keeps one throughout the campaign.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Engages in a clash with Ikai Azu to avenge Hiro. She succeeds, but it's subverted when she reveals that he was actually a familiar that she could simply resummon afterward.
  • Support Party Member: A significant part of her contributions in battle is using her various beast companions to use Assist actions for the other party members, allowing them to attack with advantage. At the end of the campaign, she reveals that in addition to the Kill Tally she had been keeping, she was keeping a hidden tally of when party members used an Assist action or a targeted heal to help another party member, which she won by a massive margin..
  • Two-Faced: Is this under her mask. Apparently, something took a pretty nasty claw to half of her face at some point in the past.

    Notable NPCs

Bandit Group

  • Bratty Half-Pint: Kang Peon is described as "a little shit".
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Ocholla died off-screen by being impaled on a pike during the bandit attack on Okogi.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: Wu Tong is a disgraced one, with Ocholla in training under her.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Wu Tong has one.
  • The Generation Gap: The most antagonistic dynamic between this group and the party is between Kang Peon and Ryn. Ryn is the most insistent on killing Kang when he appears during the attack on Okogi, and when one of Ryn's spells misses, Kang refers to it derisively as "old man magic".
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Ocholla was apparently exiled from her clan over a minor white lie meant to spare someone's feelings.
  • Ragtag Band of Misfits: Most, if not all, of their members are there due to being dishonored, exiled, or otherwise having nowhere else to go.
  • Smug Snake: Kang Peon is decribed as a competent caster, but nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. Despite his attitude, he doesn't pose much of a threat when the party fights him.
  • Statuesque Stunner: As a female Ho'Ask, Ocholla certainly qualifies, which does not go unnoticed.
  • Those Were Only Their Scouts: The Nightwolf reveals that they are working with the Eclipse to test various strategic targets in western Glies like Okogi to determine their defenses and ability to call on reinforcements, allowing the Eclipse to prepare their invasion forces.
  • Tragic Villain: Some of them, at least. See Ragtag Band of Misfits and No Good Deed Goes Unpunished above.

Lemondrop

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Has his sights set on Opa Blackhorn, despite how Opa is by all indications completely straight, and a still-grieving widower.
  • Lover, Not a Fighter: Describes himself as this. The truth is a little different.
  • Mr. Exposition: Is the one to explain to the "Pride of the Nightwolf" party their initial task.
  • Sad Clown: His goofy, relaxed demeanor is basically his way of running from his past.
  • Theme Naming: As a member of the Fruit Fly Clan, he has a fruit-based name.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He has a shirt tied around his waist, but has not been shown to ever wear it.

Limedrop

  • The Cameo: Makes an appearance in "Lost at Sea" as a part of the Eclipse patrol that the party is tasked with defeating.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In his appearance in "Lost at Sea", he decides that staying alive to deliver his message for the Eclipse is more important than continuing his duel with Mori, and beats a hasty retreat.
  • Noble Demon: When the party defeats Uzak Gyo, some of the Eclipse soldiers move to attack them, which he promptly stops, reminding them of the importance in upholding the agreement to their honor.
  • Theme Naming: As a member of the Fruit Fly Clan, he has a fruit-based name.

The Nightwolf

  • Badass in Distress: The first thing that the party has to do is locate and rescue him.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Courtesy of the Engorged One. He survives, though the injury puts him out of commission for the rest of the campaign. Later, the lasting damage resulting from it is enough to lead him to hand off his title and sword to Sunder.
  • I Work Alone: Downplayed. This doesn't stop him from working with the party or the Okogi townsfolk, but he does admit that the fact that he usually operates this way leaves him ill-prepared for the task of Training the Peaceful Villagers, necessitating Lemondrop's help.
  • Mr. Exposition: Explains to the party the role of the Eclipse in the events that they've become embroiled in, and the real danger that Okogi and west Glies are truly in.
  • One-Man Army: The Eclipse was cautious in their expansion efforts into the west due to his presence alone. When he's first released, he had been starved, beaten, and is in many other ways in bad shape, but it doesn't stop him from One Hit Killing a group of soldiers that he runs into on his way out.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Is only ever referred to as "The Nightwolf", until he gives up the title to Sunder, and reveals his real name to be Atlas Lance.
  • Take Up My Sword: Near the start of the battle with the Engorged One, he throws his signature sword to Sunder, and would later let him use it in the battle against Uzak Gyo. Afterward, he relinquishes both the sword and his title of Nightwolf to Sunder for good.

Richard Freeheart

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Is pretty much always laughing, hamming it up, and happily offers his help to the party in the hopes of getting to challenge Nightwolf afterward.
  • Cat Folk: As a Lion Tabaxi.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Gets half-eaten and hurled away by an Engorged One. From Arcadum's description, it's not a pretty sight.
  • Not So Invincible After All: He's introduced shortly after the party defeated Ikai Azu, and Arcadum makes clear that he's far stronger than the Eclipse Lieutenant was. Later, when the party is defending Okogi, he's able to hold the docks by himself, and when the Mist rolls in, he's actually having a blast fighting the creatures that come with it. However, this doesn't help him against the Engorged One, even when fighting alongside the Nightwolf.
  • Spirited Competitor: His whole purpose seems to be finding challenging fights. When the party gets caught in the Mists while trying to defend Okogi, he actually finds it fun.
  • Walking the Earth: When the party comes across him, he had been wandering through Glies in search of strong opponents, without any particular direction in mind.

Uzak Gyo

  • Big Bad: Of "Pride of the Nightwolf".
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: With the 'Merciful' trait, he specifically endeavored to avoid killing members of the party that he deemed potentially useful to the Eclipse alive, though it also prevented those players from being revived if they were knocked unconscious.
  • Honor Before Reason: After the party kills Ikai Azu, his priorities promptly go to wanting to personally recover from that dishonor by dueling the party himself, rather than trying to overrun the Okogi with the entirety of his forces. It's pretty much stated that he's not thinking too clearly.
  • The Last Dance: When he reaches the point of using his Last Stand.
  • Magic Knight: He's adept in both Martial and Magic combat.
  • Noble Demon: He offered to fight the party five-on-one rather than attack the village with the entirety of his forces, and made preparations to ensure that neither side could easily back out of it.

Shrine of Sin

    Kenji

Kenji

Art by Luca

Player: Gmart
Race: Yozai (Twilight)
Class: Monk (Way of Mercy)
Path: Titan's Mark of Light
——

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: His fighting style mostly boils down to "punch it".
  • Blood Knight: Not as much of one as Worgh, but still enjoys combat.
  • Butt-Monkey: Kenji's status as "goblin" and astonishing miss rate hasn't left him with much respect among the party.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Most of the party acts as this to Verp, but Kenji in particular gets paired up with the Grippli in order to keep him out of trouble.
  • Designated Point Man: His status as "goblin", which mostly consists of opening doors and taking the brunt of damage when a trap inevitably goes off. He's learning to carry things to open doors from afar to save himself some grief.
  • Healing Hands: Possesses both Hand of Healing and Lay on Hands.
  • Not So Above It All: While he's often trying to keep the likes of Verp and Worgh in check, he's also prone to joining in on the wyrdness sometimes.
    • He berates Wallace Pho for his Porn Stash before leaving his home, but then steals some of it for himself on the way out.
    • He considers buying some Black Silver from Honest-Affirmations, and only doesn't because he's not willing to pay that much.
    • He joins Worgh in asking Kazakori for mushrooms that can increase their power, only to end up in a Mushroom Samba instead.
  • Power Tattoo: Gains one on his chest. It lets him use Lay on Hands, despite being a monk.
  • Slap Yourself Awake: He sometimes uses his 'Hands of Healing' on himself this way.

    Verp

Verp

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/verp_1.png
Art by mariah_art

Player: Tomato
Race: Grippli
Class: Cleric (Faithless Domain)
——

  • Badass Adorable: Very cute looking, but capable of a frightening amount of damage with Inflict Wounds.
  • Boring, but Practical: When the party meets up with the Night Cross and agrees to help them, they are provided with a variety of weapons and training. Verp, by contrast, obtains knowledge on Obake and Rokurokubi Yokai and their Akuma variants, allowing him advantage on Martial checks while in battle against such opponents. As Criken, a veteran of Arcadum's campaigns, notes, this kind of thing tends to come in very handy.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Verp is constantly spaced out and insists on doing things that only make sense to him, and his lack of awareness regarding everything from social tact to common sense causes him to do bizarre, self-destructive things in polite company. In particular, Verp is completely oblivious as to why the innkeeper hates him so much, despite stealing ramen from him twice and spitting it out on the desk he works at (albeit in a poor effort to apologize to him).
  • Cuckoosnarker: Verp has a surprisingly savage wit to him that contrasts with his weirdness. In particular, he snidely refers to religious texts as lies, and in another instance starts roasting Akakai when she seemingly forgets that they're inside of a sawmill.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Despite his simplemindedness, Verp makes some very good points when calling out the incompetence of the Night Cross, as their misplaced trust of Sinning Simon gave him access to the materials he needed to go through with his plans and endanger Glies. When Iho tries to counter by saying that they had no idea of what he had planned, similar to how the party didn't know the seemingly abandoned base was still active, Verp immediately points out that "accidentally walking into someone's poorly-maintained home" and "keeping a lunatic around for months and possibly dooming everyone" is not a one-to-one comparison.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Verp eats most things he can get his hands on, eating books, gold, and other things. His player even explicitly advises against giving Verp the Bag of Holding as he would have eaten it pretty much immediately.
  • Functional Addict: Addicted to Black Silver, but it doesn't really interfere much.
  • Hates Being Touched: He has no issue initiating touching people, but he's very jumpy and averse to being touched himself.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Verp has a bit of trouble reading people and understanding social politeness, which has a tendency to earn people's ire.
  • Medium Awareness: Verp is seemingly aware of the fact that he's a DnD character, at one point pulling up his own stat sheet to explain that he's out of spell slots and isn't of much use at the moment. Later, while tripping balls, he starts hallucinating and begins to see Arcadum's avatar talking away in the corner of the screen.
  • Mundane Solution: When Akakai is watching the grief-stricken Daask Breeze and notices that he's in danger of being possessed by an Akuma, she spends some time deliberating about how to best approach him to stop it... when Verp simply wanders up and offers him a hug, which comforts him enough to stop the process. Though Akakai's pep talk to Daask afterwards probably helped to ensure that it would stick.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Verp's lack of knowledge of Glies and its culture means that he needs some of its peculiarities explained to him. Unfortunately, most of the people he asks aren't that great at explaining things.
  • Nay-Theist: Verp doesn't disbelieve in the existence of spiritual things, but doesn't find any good reason to put faith in those things, and holds active disdain for them.
  • Hat of Power: Picks up a fedora to fuel his detective persona. It grants +2 False Intelligence.
  • Odd Friendship: With Worgh, as while Verp is much more naive and out there than his fearsome orc companion, their similar oddball nature has them naturally drawn towards each other in the team's dynamics.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: He is a frog. It sees a lot of use, both for grabbing things and activating touch spells at a greater distance.
  • Science Hero: Not quite yet, but he is on the path to becoming a Tech Priest upon discovering what is effectively a modern-day tablet.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Verp is so clueless and stuck in his own little world that he constantly puts his own life at risk, at one point refusing to spit out some cursed sand, despite knowing that the same sand had melted Worgh's face. His player, Tomato, is so committed to Verp's suicidal idiocy that he made a game out of rolling a dice at the start of his streams to determine whether Verp died offscreen after "Shrine of Sin" wrapped up, noting that, without someone around to keep him in check (like Kenji), Verp would absolutely get himself killed.

In full Onimetsu Regalia and with Zerazai
Art by firescribe

Player: Red
Race: Tearn
Class: Ranger (Onimetsu)

  • Berserk Button: She does not like being compared to a vampire. Unfortunately for her, being a Tearn who wears dark clothing and hails from the Blood Clan, it's kind of inevitable.
  • Bookworm: Akakai loves books and never passes up a chance to read. She's always delighted to find a library and gets grumpy when pulled away from her reading.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Wields a longsword and a longbow.
  • Cool Mask: The Mask of Iron, which boosts the damage from her Hunter's Mark, though she's promised to hand it off to Worgh once he's able to learn spells that would allow him to make better use of it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She wears dark clothing, hails from the Blood Clan, and her Yokai companion's true form is of a giant snake, but she's a very honorable and compassionate person, and is more horrified than anyone of the atrocities that the party discovers had been committed in Sinning Simon's lair.
  • Demon Slaying: Her status as an onimetsu means she is very adept at facing down and destroying akuma.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Akakai has pale skin and dark hair.
  • Flight: She can fly thanks to her wings. It's incredibly helpful in navigating treacherous areas, scouting around for enemies, and remaining out of harm's way.
  • The Gift: She's noted to be an especially talented Onimetsu. The fact that she was able to perform a successful cleansing of an Akuma corruption despite being self-taught up to that point in particular gets Iho Sukata's attention.
  • I Just Want to Be Badass: Played for Laughs; Akakai is actually a badass already, but she cares a lot about her self-image and deliberately tries to act stoic and "cool", which makes it funnier when the façade cracks and she starts doing something silly.
  • No Social Skills: Has trouble talking to anyone not named Joey.
  • Not So Above It All: She likes to present herself as a serious, badass hunter of akuma, but in reality she's every bit as quirky and silly as Verp and Worgh - she's just better at hiding it.
    • When Joey first appears in the campaign, Akakai drops the no-nonsense act and starts bouncing around in excitement, happily going along with all of Joey's silliness. Up to this point she's largely been completely straight-faced, but here she gets so enthusiastic and loud that she wakes Kenji up from his sleep.
    • Akakai is completely fuming the entire time she has to deal with Wallace Pho (who, for reference, is an unflattering caricature of a stereotypical internet nerd). His interest in her causes her to seriously consider killing him, frantically asking Joey if Wallace is an Akuma so that she has an excuse to take him out.
    • Akakai is at least partially the reason why the coin toss on how to trail Sinning Simon went so badly - namely, not unlike Verp, she actively tried sabotaging the coin flip to force it to land heads so that they could go through the swamp, all while acting very bratty about it.
    • She gets extremely flustered when Worgh compares the customs of Akakai's clan to vampires, getting increasingly embarrassed as he keeps pushing the point.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The one woman of the party.

    Worgh the Wyrd

Worgh

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/worgh_1.png
Art by Burdrehnar

Player: Criken
Race: Blue Orc
Class: Fighter/Wizard (Void Mage)
Path: Keeper of Storms, Refractions
——

  • Affably Evil: Worgh is power hungry and solidly Neutral Evil, but his goofiness and respect for the other members of his party keeps him allied with his Good to Neutral friends.
  • Berserk Button: Denying him power. After getting tricked by Dexin Volnarus into giving up Sinning Simon's soul for free, Worgh is silently fuming until Kenji touches him, after which he goes ballistic, knocking Kenji out with one punch and proceeding to rampage across the room.
  • Blood Knight: Loves fighting and frequently challenges others to fights.
  • Carved Mark: He's been seen carving marks into his skin after gaining power of some kind. He claims that they're runes, though Criken makes clear that they're not actually magical in any way.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: True to his title, Worgh is weird.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: With his Mold Earth spell.
  • Dumb Muscle: Very powerful, both physically and magically, but struggles in common sense.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: In one memorable instance, Worgh tries playing a prank on Verp by tricking him into reaching into a jar of eyeballs with his eyes closed, saying that they're just grapes, only calling off the joke when Verp is about to eat one of them. Verp is actually quite disturbed by this, and Worgh's terrible attempt at a joke is lampshaded by him proper:
Worgh: This was Worgh's attempt at humor. It will not happen again.
  • An Ice Person: As a Blue Orc, he has the Black Ice ability, which allows him to start combat with the effects of Armor of Agathys, which deals cold damage to enemies that strike him with a melee attack.
  • Large Ham: He wants power, and he wants it loudly and hammily.
  • Life Drain: An effect he can utilize from wielding the 'Fist of Feasting'.
  • Living Weapon: The 'Fist of Feasting', a Tsukimogami Amalgamation given to him by the Night Cross.
  • Magic Knight: Worgh supplements his physical prowess with magical power, making him a force to be reckoned with.
  • Odd Friendship: With Verp, as while Worgh is much more bloodthirsty and boisterous than his little grippli friend, their similar oddball nature has them naturally drawn towards each other in the team's dynamics.
  • Sword and Fist: Fights with a longsword and his Fist of Feasting.
  • Too Many Mouths: Fittingly for a weapon called the 'Fist of Feasting', it has a mouth in its palm.
  • Xtreme Kool Letterz: Wyrd. It's unknown if this is to accentuate his weirdness or if Worgh doesn't really know how to spell "weird".
  • You No Take Candle: His speech occasionally slips into this.

    Zhan Ren

Zhan

Art by Luca

Player: Lawlman
Race: Ho'Ask
Class: Glien Samurai (Azuma)
——

     Notable NPCs

Joey / Zerazai

  • Dramatic Pause: He's fond of this, and coaches Akakai to use them in order to sound more badass.
  • Fairy Companion: As Akakai's Yokai partner.
  • The Mentor: As Akakai's partner, he serves as this, helping her brush up on information about Akuma that she doesn't quite have down yet, as well as coaching her on interacting with people.
  • Mysterious Past: He seems to have one with the Onimetsu and the Night Cross in particular, as Iho Sukata immediately recognizes him and is aware of his true name and form. Joey doesn't seem too enthusiastic about divulging the details though, not even to Akakai.
  • Scaled Up: His true form is that of an enormous snake.

Kazakori Otaku

  • Beneath the Earth: He typically lives in the Underworld, a network of caverns far beneath Glies. Apparently, it's so deep down that it's a month's travel to reach it from the surface.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's initially brusque with the party when they first meet him, but once he gets an opportunity to start talking about some of his old battle stories, he warms up to them quickly.
  • Eye Scream: His right eye has a sizable scar over it.
  • Higher Understanding Through Drugs: He uses mushrooms to give himself a vision though which he obtains information to help direct the party to Sinning Simon.
  • Mushroom Man: As a Mycanoid.
  • Mushroom Samba: When Worgh and Kenji ask him for mushrooms that will increase their power, he points at a couple of random ones and claims that they would do that. Said mushrooms just put them both into one of these.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a number of them, including a cursed scar that he received from an Akuma.
  • Real Men Get Shot: He's very proud of his scars, to the point that he doesn't bother trying to get his cursed one healed. According to him, "Mycanoid ladies, they like a man with a lot of holes".
  • Use Your Head: When conversing with Zhan, one of his stories involves him defeating an Umberhulk this way.

Wallace Pho

  • Ascended Extra: He briefly appeared in the first session when Verp wandered into his house believing it to be the tavern, at the time being an inconsequential citizen who didn't even warrant a token. Later, Verp gets the idea to visit him again, by which point Arcadum had fleshed out the character more thoroughly, though he still receives only one scene (albeit a memorable one).
  • Casanova Wannabe: Very much tries to be this when he notices Akakai. Obviously, she's having none of it, not that he notices.
  • Fat Bastard: Not a pleasant guy, and he's also quite hefty, with Verp being in danger of being crushed by the "Ass of Annihilation" at one point.
  • Has a Type: He has a very clear interest in Tearn women in particular. Unfortunately for Akakai, she is both of those things.
  • Nerd Glasses: He has a pair of bifocals.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Some of the many drawings of scantily-clad women he owns include some depicting Akuma.
  • Otaku: He's an obvious sterotype of one.
  • Perverted Sniffing: When Akakai destroys several of his Tearn drawings just before leaving, he is seen doing this with the scrolls she damaged as she goes.
  • The Pigpen: His beard is stated to be heavily unkempt, and his home is very messy and foul-smelling.
  • Porn Stash: He has an extensive one, to say the least.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: As the conversation with him continues, Akakai tries to threaten him, but he's too excited at the attention he's receiving from her to care.
  • Wisdom from the Gutter: As disgusting as he is, the information that he gives the party regarding Akuma is, in fact, accurate.

Main Story Campaigns

Otikata's Curse

     Mei

Mei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mei_7.jpg
The Woman with Two Lives
Player: Froot
Race: Whitewood Elf
Class: Rogue (Assassin)
——

  • Berserk Button: Referring to her branches as antlers, or stealing from her stand.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Primarily wields a shortbow and rapier.
  • Hyper-Awareness: She has a +5 bonus to Perception checks, and she's generally tended towards getting fairly high rolls when performing such checks.
  • Living a Double Life: Fruit stand owner by day, assassin by night. She has been shown to get noticeably flustered when she believes that someone has caught on to this.
  • Mystical White Hair: Goes so far as to explicitly point hers out when listing her advantages in salesmanship over Kyse's.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Breaks these out on occasion.
  • Plant Person: As a Glien Elf, she has plant features, specifically the branches growing from her head.
  • Precision F-Strike: Delivers one when Kyse wins over Nia as a customer, which gets attention just from how posh it sounds in Froot's accent.note
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Delivers one to the Mistwalker Gorger before delivering a slash with her rapier. Unfortunately, the attack doesn't quite finish it, and Mei gets beaten down shortly afterward.
Mei: I have killed many. You... are just a number!
  • Professional Killer: She is an assassin, after all. This even comes into play in the campaign, with her receiving a contract from her clan via crow during the night in the fourth session, with the implication that this will be a recurring event.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Kyse, the owner of a meat stand that rivals Mei's fruit stand, though they go back to being Friendly Enemies when the day is over.
  • Stealth Expert: She has a +7 bonus to Stealth checks, and very often fares well in such rolls, especially in one instance where she managed a 27 when scouting out the presence of a Mistwalker Gorger, and did so again once in the actual fight with it.
  • Transformation Sequence: Her switching to her assassin's guise tends to be treated like one of these.
  • Tsundere: Has a tendency to act like this sometimes, especially towards Kyse and River.

     Lucine Lavendel

Lucine

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucine_lavendel_1.jpg
The World Weary Soldier
Art by cazanami
Player: Nyanners
Race: Tearn
Class: Warlock (Celestial)
Deity: Zvaigždė and Verza
Path: The Gazer
——

  • Affectionate Nickname: River coins the nickname "Luci" for her, which initially causes her some level of confusion due to never being referred to by anything beyond her rank in the military or her name.
  • Combat Medic: Has some healing spells in addition to her offensive ones.
  • The Comically Serious: She maintains her calm, mysterious tone even when delivering the occasional odd statement or smoking a blunt.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Has one over her left eye. It was emblazoned with a rose symbol when Lucine gained the Path of the Gazer, with a focus on Verza.
  • Flying Firepower: Shaping up to be one of her go-to combat strategies. She later took Eldritch Spear to improve her range specifically to become better capable of it. Added to in the battle against the Mistwalker Gorger, when she airlifts Nia for the occasion, allowing her to attack and heal from the air as well.
  • Innate Night Vision: As a Tearn, she has an enhanced ability to see in the dark.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Certainly projects the air of one. In combat, she mostly defaults to hurling spells from above; when the sitation gets dire, she uses her flight to dart around the battlefield providing aid to her allies and pulling them out of immediate danger when needed.
  • Magical Girl: As part of her service to Verza and the Red Pantheon, she ended up the first player character to become a Star Maiden, which is effectively one of these.
  • The Mentor: Had served this role to Captain Chei in her backstory.
  • Mysterious Past: Seems particularly invested in keeping this the case with her. When Moe Kowbull explains the ability of his third eye to discern the past, present, and future of those he looks at closely with it, she keeps a wide berth from him as much as possible for the rest of the session.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite her youthful appearance, Lucine has a very long lifespan as a Tearn and it's apparent that she's been a soldier for a long time.
  • Playing Against Type: Nyanners has stated that she had specifically conceived of her character to be serious and stoic to step away from her usual goofy and chaotic persona.
  • Screw Destiny: Has memorably had a particularly... unique take on this. note
Lusine: You can shit yourself whenever you want to. Fate is in your hands.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Has shown some shades of this, as she seems to have come across her share of unpleasant sights during her time as a soldier.
  • The Sleepless: No longer needs to sleep, thanks to taking Aspect of the Moon.
  • The Stoic: Even when drunk or stoned, she maintains her serious and calm tone.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When River notices the rather unnecessarily brutal manner by which the Mistwalker's heart was extracted, Lucine insists that it was absolutely necessary and not her losing control at all.
  • Transformation Sequence: Having become A Star Maiden, this is pretty much a given.
  • Warrior Poet: Has shades of this in how she describes things going on around her or provides advice for her friends. Given how she's played by Nyanners, sometimes these poetic statements can be a little odd.

Player: Haruka Karibu
Race: Geckoi
Class: Fighter (Dancing Blade)
Path: The Spirit Walker
——

  • Ambiguous Gender: As a Geckoi, she has few outward indications of her gender other than her feathery hair.
  • Back from the Dead: Being killed by the Mistwalker Gorger in a Heroic Sacrifice was enough to allow her admittance to the Hall of Heroes, where she gained the opportunity to fight for the right to return to life, and ultimately succeeds.
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: See above.
  • Came Back Strong: After River died facing the Mistwalker Gorger, she took the first step on the Path of the Spirit Dancer while dueling for the right to return to the Waking Realm.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Or her liquor in this case. It doesn't take long for River to fall into a fit of drunken stupor after sitting down with Lucine and Captain Chei in the tavern.
  • Captain Crash: She's introduced crashing her kite into a tree. Apparently, this is a regular occurrence for her, though it has yet to come into play in the campaign itself.
  • Combat Hand Fan: She gets a pair of these from Naus Gaki as part of the group's starting gear.
  • The Drifter: She seems to have been this prior to the campaign, mentioning in conversation that she frequently sleeps wherever she can manage to find shelter, such as in trees or caves.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: After River dies and goes to the Hall of Heroes, she's given the choice to stay in what is effectively Valhalla, or try and fight to return to life to continue travelling with the party; notably, it's pointed out that the next time she dies, it may very well not be in a way that will allow her to return. Naturally, she chooses to fight for her life.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Intentionally draws the attention of the Mistwalker Gorger to take the heat off her allies, which ultimately resulted in her death.
  • Heroic Second Wind: As a Fighter, she can use the Second Wind ability to perform a self-heal.
  • Informed Ability: Despite being presented as a dancer, she has no proficiencies in the Performance skill. This, combined with her typically poor rolls, resulted in her attempt to take part in a dancing competition ending in her barely making it through the first round (and then only because her competition passed out first), and soundly losing the second round. Though this is chalked up to River being drunk and unused to performing in front of crowds.
  • It Only Works Once: While River is able to return to life by fighting in the Hall of Heroes to earn it, Arcadum also makes clear that she is only able to do this the one time.
  • Me's a Crowd: Her 'Spirit Dance' allows her to temporarily act as two separate characters.
  • Nerves of Steel: In the battle against the Mistwalker Gorger, she utterly brushed off every one of its attempts to use Frightening Roar on her.
  • The Nicknamer: Has shown a penchant for giving her comrades nicknames, with Mei being referred to as "Princess" for her prim and prissy demeanor, and Lucine gaining the nickname "Luci".
  • Noodle Incident: She somehow managed to get a hit put out on her at one point, resulting in a second such incident where Mei tried to collect on it, but obviously failed to do so.
  • Ping Pong Naïveté: Of a sort. On a few occasions when River encountered a character that she felt was lying in some way, she performed an Insight check to attempt to detect any deception. In keeping with her poor luck with rolls, every attempt at this has failed miserably, resulting in River playing to this result in-game by promptly declaring that she completely trusts the character that she suspected of dishonesty only moments earlier.
  • Prehensile Tail: As is natural for a Geckoi.
  • Tail Slap: She's able to use her tail as a whip, thanks to a knife at its end.
  • Talking to the Dead: Following her own death and return to life, River has begun doing this in areas in which there are (or were) a lot of dead.
  • Unluckily Lucky: River was the only one who failed her initial wisdom save to fend off the Hate Plague, leaving her briefly Brainwashed and Crazy. Fortunately, though, her infamously poor luck with rolls continued when she was forced to attack Bomba, causing her to miss and giving her second chance at a wisdom save, which did turn out successful, allowing her to return to normal.

     Tomoe

Tomoe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tomoe_3.jpg
The Inquisitive Sorcerer
Art by TheArtGun
Player: Snuffy
Race: Ho'Ask
Class: Wild Magic Sorcerer
Path: Previously, The Grey One
——

  • Bag of Holding: Is the one in charge of the one gifted to the party.
  • Cross Player: The female Snuffy plays the male Tomoe. Downplayed in that he is a "femboy".
  • Death Seeker: As confirmed in one of Snuffy's streams, for all his general affablness and mild chaos, Tomoe carries a lot of guilt over his magic and the harm it can cause. This has led to him placing very little value on his own life and taking high risk actions, as he thinks if he dies people will be safer than if he stayed alive.
  • Demonic Possession: His magic comes from having been possessed by The Grey One from a young age. Tomoe ended up getting rid of him by drinking a random experimental potion. Unfortunately, this also resulted in him getting this from Tyre instead.
  • Does Not Like Magic: Does not very much appreciate his magic and tries to avoid using it wherever possible. Turns out there's a very good reason for this.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: As a "femboy", he's a male with feminine features. This shows in both in his face and his horns, which extend slightly to the sides and upward (Its usually upward for females or to the sides for males). It's later revealed that his horns at least have nothing to do with his femine features, but were twisted into their current form when his possessing demon took temporary control of his body to prevent him committing suicide.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Despite being a Sorcerer, he seems to primarily fight using conventional weapons when possible, though the gloves come off when it's clear that the enemy at hand is really nasty.
  • Gag Penis: Even taking into account his Ho'ask ancestry, Tomoe is quite gifted in that aspect. His party is noticeably intimidated by his size, but it's mostly Played for Laughs.
  • Hearing Voices: Following learning about the Grey One's presence in his mind, Tomoe has become able to speak with him. At least, until he ended up losing the Grey One and getting Tyre instead.
  • Horned Humanoid: Naturally has horns given that he's a Ho'Ask. His are somewhat unique in that they jut out just slightly to the sides before extending vertically while being coal-grey. His horns aren't actually natural, they changed shape after a demon named The Grey One took over his body.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Following accidentally killing his parents and being exiled from his clan, he attempted to drown himself in a river. However, The Grey One possessing him took over and swam back out.
    • According to Snuffy, randomly drinking the potion that would end up making Tomoe an apprentice of Tyre was, at least on some level, another shot at it. Under most conditions, he would've succeeded handily. Under his circumstances, however, something very different happened instead.
  • Kill It with Ice: His Ray of Frost, which in particular comes in handy against the Mistwalker Gorger, as scoring a hit with it revealed that cold-based attacks reduce its rage.
  • The One Guy: As the only male player character in an otherwise all-female main cast.
  • Power Incontinence: Something of a part of being a Wild Magic Sorcerer, but especially so in his case, given where that magic came from and how it first manifested.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Very much unintentionally; his magic first manifested when he was frightened by a tumble and incinerated his parents.
  • Straight Man: He tended to commonly play this role early on, such as in his reactions to things like Jilly's efforts to interview him or Mei and Kyse's rivalry.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: As a Ho'Ask, he doesn't lie as a part of his culture. However, after a Nightmare Sequence from Otikata that's implied to draw from his past, he claimed that it was a more general horror-style sequence like what Mei had at about the same time. It was later revealed he was exiled from his home as a child after an awful accident, which has likely led to him being less strictly adherent to that trait of their culture.

     Nia Ebonheart

Nia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nia_6.jpg
The Mischievous Huntress
Player: Veibae
Race: Tabaxi/Human
Class: Druid
——

  • The Ditz: Is a bit of an airhead, especially in how she ended up broke at the campaign's start. When the party is preparing for a fight she shows a more serious and calm demeanor, but it's implied that this is a result of Lune having greater influence over her actions while in scythe mode.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Apparently, given that Lune warns the party against letting her fly via kite. While this could be chalked up to her not being native to Glies and thus unused to that mode of travel, Lune makes clear that this tendency extends to land vehicles as well. Fortunately, she's light enough that Lucine can fly while carrying her.
  • Greed: Nia is very loot-happy. She was the most insistent on scavenging the Mistwalker Gorger for absolutely everything useful the party could possibly carve off of it, and when the party comes across a graveyard, River has to practically beg her to not try to dig up the graves.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Due to originally hailing from Steton. She specializes in Bulettes.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Possibly. When Kyse offers her the choice of any meat from his stand, Nia tries asking for Kyse himself.
  • In the Hood: Wears one when first entering the tavern upon realizing that Mei and Kyse, who she had stolen from earlier, are also there. Mei sees through it, though.
  • Kill It with Ice: Her Ice Knife spell, which even comes with some Area of Effect damage.
  • Lethal Chef: The first time the party makes camp, she makes an attempt to cook her ration, but fails the roll and burns it to charcoal instead. According to Lune, it's apparently the best one she's made to date.
  • Miracle Food: She has a spell that allows her to conjure Goodberries. It's been suggested that this is the cause of her Lethal Chef tendencies, as thanks to having it, she doesn't really have to cook.
  • Playing Against Type: Vei specifically conceived the character to be more innocently cute in order to step away from her usual sexually-charged persona.
  • Royal Blood: She's actually a potential princess of the Shadowfell. Lune directly uses the trope name to describe her.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her familiar, Lune, is capable of transforming into a blade for her scythe. Played with in that she's not exactly sinister (though she is prone to stealing or cheating), but Lune himself is something of The Trickster.
  • Sole Survivor: The battle with the Mistwalker Gorger ends with her as the only one left standing, though downplayed in that the rest of the party is severely injured and Not Quite Dead. Except for one.
  • Sticky Fingers: Steals some food from Kyse and Mei's respective stands while they're busy arguing with each other.
  • Token Mini-Moe: As the smallest and seemingly youngest member of the group.
  • Tunnel King: As a hunter of Bulettes, she has this ability.
  • Two-Faced: She's forced to take enough cursed actions in the battle against the Mistwalker Gorger that the curse has left her this way by the end of it. However, thanks to the party obtaining a heart from a greater Mistwalker, this is undone when the party receives their treatment from Naus and everyone's curse levels are reset.
  • Wild Child: She started off as one in her background. She has largely grown out of it by the time the campaign starts, though she's still naive and not the most observant of social norms.

    Notable NPCs

Galdor the Iron Lord

  • BFS: Primarily wields a massive greatsword.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: He connects the hilts of two his greatswords into a twinblade at one point.
  • The Cameo: His first appearance was actually back in "Silent Knights", but he didn't get a chance to do much there, so "The Spirit Dance" is where he recieved most of his characterization.
  • Compressed Hair: Has a mane of long, lustrous blonde hair under his helmet.
  • Gracious Loser: He happily accepts his loss to River, expressing hope that her comrades treat her well after she returns to life before he fades from the arena.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Being completely clad in full plate armor until he drops his helmet in his duel with River, this is his overall look.
  • The Lost Lenore: Inverted in that he's the one who died, though the effect is there in that this still separated him from his wife. Motivated by the chance to reunite with her, he tried to gain the right to return to life himself at one point, but failed.
  • Mighty Glacier: Touts his strong, armored form as having an advantage over River's relative Fragile Speedster in their duel. She ultimately wins, though.
  • Spirited Competitor: Is quite pleased when River turns out to be more than capable of matching him in their duel.
  • Walking Armory: In addition to his pair of greatswords, he also has an iron whip and a spear. Justified in that fighting in the Hall of Heroes allows him to summon whatever weaponry he needs, just as River can.
  • Walking Spoiler: Knowing just about anything about him beyond his basic appearance reveals that River died at one point, as she meets him in the afterlife, and has to duel him for the chance to return to the Waking Realm.

Kyse

  • Bird People: As a Kenku.
  • Friend in the Black Market: He serves as this for the party once the Inquisitor's temple is set up as their base of operations.
  • Gone Horribly Right: When he beats Mei to getting Nia as a customer, only for Nia to ask for him.
Kyse: (To Mei) YOU CAN HAVE HER!
  • Retired Badass: Possibly. It's not clear exactly how good he was at the fighting part, but he was a rogue before becoming a meat vendor, which is where he got his black market connections.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Mei, being the owner of a meat stand that rivals her fruit stand, though they go back to being Friendly Enemies when the day is over.
  • The Stoner: Has a considerable stash on him when the party gets to the tavern at the end of the day.

Lune

  • Con Man: Has apparently had a fairly long history of being one prior to the campaign.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: He seems to see himself as one to Nia.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's rude, crude and has committed numerous petty crimes. He's also the only stable element in Nia's life since her childhood and despite only being with her on orders from the Shadowfell queen, clearly cares for her a great deal.
  • The Mentor: His true role toward Nia is more like this.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: He's got a maw full of big, pointy teeth.
  • Secret-Keeper: Is aware of Nia's true origins, but is keeping those details from her until he feels she's ready.
  • Sticky Fingers: When Nia starts stealing meat from Kyse's stand, he's quick to join in.
  • Talking Animal: As Nia's familiar.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: When Mei catches up to him for his part in Nia stealing from her stand, he's all too enthusiastic about the punishments she has lined up for him.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Has some level of this. He mainly switches between his cat form and the form of a scythe's blade, but has been shown to be able to take other forms, such as a bed for Nia.

Naus Gaki

  • Bat People: As a Tearn.
  • The Cassandra: He mentions that he had been trying to warn others about Otikata for some time, only to be ostracized and eventually lose pretty much everything he had for his troubles.
  • Mission Control: As mentioned below, he's the one with the information on everything that's going on, and the party maintains contact with him via a magical seashell-like device, but only for ten minutes a week.
  • Mr. Exposition: Is the one to fill the party in on what's going on and what can be done about it.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has major burns on the right side of his face and right wing from a failed attempt to delay Otikata's return.

Otikata

  • Big Bad: The main threat of the campaign.
  • Eldritch Abomination: An otherworldly creature spreading a curse of hatred throughout Glies.
  • Hate Plague: His curse. It's capable of turning even small annoyances into burning, violent rage. What makes his curse so dangerous is that it spreads. What starts as one violent act can turn into a full riot of hate. And given that yokai turn into akuma in the presence of negative emotions...
  • Leaking Can of Evil: Currently unable to fully access the Material Plane, but he can still access people's dreams and spread his curse.
  • Man Behind the Man: He was this to Sinning Simon of "Shrine of Sin".
  • Our Demons Are Different: An incredibly powerful akuma, dwarfing every corrupted yokai seen so far. Notably, while most akuma resemble normal yokai with a bit of Body Horror, Otikata is a full on Eldritch Abomination with no inkling as to whatever his original form was.
  • Outside-Context Problem: He's basically this to the heroes of Kalkatesh. When Moe Kowbull and Derok Dranf meet with the "Otikata's Curse" party, they can barely make heads or tails of the titular curse, and can ultimately do little more to cure them of it than to help prepare them for the quest from Naus Gaki that they're already on.
  • The Power of Hate: Basically runs on it.
  • Was Once a Man: Presumably, he was once just a regular yokai like any other. Now he... isn't.

Scrolls of Not'Chek / The Divine Wind

    Schmeg the Sorcerer

Shmeg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/schmeg_the_sorcerer.png
Bippity Boppity...
Art by Aresvalto
Player: MiltonTPike
Race: Sprite (Iron Wing)
Class: Warlock (Undying)
Deity: Oloken'hai
——

  • Ambiguously Human: He's a sprite... statwise. Shmeg's body has a mass of tentacles on it and he claims to be much older than a sprite's standard lifespan. It's unknown if he's actually a sprite or if his pact with Oloken'hai has simply altered his body past the point of resembling a member of his species.
  • Berserk Button: Calling his hands small. A trait shared by his player.
  • Catchphrase: Always begins his rhymes with "Bippity boppity".
  • Chaotic Neutral: His alignment at the start. Shifts to Chaotic Good after his Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Combat Tentacles: Frequently uses the Arms of Hadar spell. Some tentacles also sprout out of his body while channeling Oloken'hai.
  • Counter-Attack: His Hellish Rebuke.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Frequently makes jabs and quips at his fellow party members.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Claims to be this. His patron, Oloken'hai, fits the bill much better.
  • Evil Laugh: Breaks out an impressive one when his final attempt to call on Oloken'hai during the battle with Not'Chek succeeds. Ironically, this is also the act that most firmly pushes him towards good.
  • Expressive Mask: The eyes of his mask narrow on his talking sprite whenever he speaks.
  • The Gadfly: Shmeg enjoys teasing, pranking, and seems to take the most joy in berating and insulting Scribbles.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: During a very low point in the battle with Not'Chek, Shmeg begs Oloken'hai to trade his life for the ones of his fallen party members. After channeling his patron, Shmeg ends up alive and with his party revived, although very exhausted from the experience.
  • In the Hood: Is in a full body, hooded cloak by default.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For all of his jabs, sarcasm, and claims of being a great, terrible being, it is surprisingly common for him to offer help to or show concern for his party, to say nothing of his actions during the battle against Not'Chek.
  • Large Ham: Incredibly dramatic and fond of rhymes before casting spells.
  • Master of Illusion: With Misty Visions.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Consistently chants an expressive spell in order to...open doors. Doubles as a running joke in game where he's completely unaware that his party members (mainly Brewbad) opens the door for him.
    • Though in the last episode of Scrolls of Not'chek this is somewhat slightly subverted when he opens a door outside of view from his party.
  • The Napoleon: The smallest party member with a huge ego and a short temper.
  • Omniglot: A variation. Shmeg can read any language after picking up Eyes of the Runekeeper.
  • Poke the Poodle: Despite his claims of being a great, terrible being, this is generally what Shmeg's standard level of "evil" amounts to.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He claims to be very old, but the veracity of this has yet to be confirmed.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Shmeg is very boastful and self-important, but rarely gets much respect.
  • Support Party Member: Milton notes during the battle with Not'Chek that most of his spells are for support or RP purposes. His main damage-dealing option is Toll the Dead, which Not'Chek's high Wisdom modifier made it difficult to fail the saving throw for, meaning Schmeg couldn't do much of anything directly until the option to Clash became available to him.

    Mataal Ika

Mataal Ika

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mataal_ika.png
Yeah, whatever dude
Art by Hirona
Divine Wind appearance
Art by Hirona
Player: Hirona
Race: Human (Illithari)
Class: Bard
Deity: Lorita (formerly)
——

  • Cross Player: The female Hirona plays the male Mataal Ika.
  • The Ditz: He's dumb as fuck.
  • Eyeless Face: Turns out, an ability obtained from creatures called 'Eyeless Ones' that is referred to as 'Sight Without Sight' isn't all just for dramatics. When Mataal Ika uses this ability, skin actually grows over his eyes to result in this look for the duration.
  • Giftedly Bad: His playing is... not the best. Fittingly, he only has 10 Charisma.
    • Subverted in the Divine Wind after returning from "Bard Camp".
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: Kind of. At a point some time after an Eyeless One imbeds itself in him, Brewbad calls on his patron, unaware that earlier events had switched it to Jhasa, a member of the Red Pantheon, who is very much in opposition with the Eyeless Ones. She was set to promptly Mercy Kill Mataal, but after a plea from Brewbad, instead opted to task Mataal with hunting down Eyeless ones wherever possible.
  • Manchild: Acts like an immature, standoffish teenager. Sometimes even younger.
  • Neutral Good: His alignment.
  • Odd Friendship: With Anaalius.
  • The Power of Rock: Uses music to cast spells as a Bard, which is only elevated by the audio clips of Santino's playing to accompany the casting.
  • Punny Name: Metallica.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: Gender flipped. Mataal ends up getting a crush on Anaalius during their adventure. It's as hilarious as it is surprisingly sweet.
  • Take That!: Began existence as one towards Metallica, given that Hirona, Mataal's player, is not a fan of them, and intentionally gave him only 10 Charisma as a dig toward the band. Humorously, Milton (Shmeg's player) is a Metallica fan, so every jab at the band leads to outrage on his part (which was completely intended on Hirona's).
  • Theme Music Power-Up: After meeting with Madd Morc in the Dream Realm, he gains the ability to play "The Ballad of Madd Morc", which can grant his allies advantage on their next attack.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Ends up gaining psionic powers from an interaction with the Eyeless Ones.

    Brewbad Stormfinger

Brewbad

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brewbad.png
The Stormfinger
Art by mishacuse
Divine Wind appearance
Player: Sock
Race: Dwarf (Mountain)
Class: Warlock (Celestial)
Deity: Regalia, later Jhasa, previously The Gambler Black
——

  • Bargain with Heaven: As a Celestial Warlock, he's in a pact with a heavenly being. His patron is Regalia and later Jhasa.
  • Combat Medic: Is probably the closest the party has to a healer, but is generally up close and personal slugging it out with the enemy during combat.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Brewbad had a partner that he couldn't protect in the past, so he made a contract with The Gambler Black. It went worse, so he turned to Regalia to try and cleanse himself of the deal.
  • Deal with the Devil: Brewbad was once a follower of The Gambler Black. The deal seems to have mostly fallen through after his contract with Regalia, but the Gambler still seems to have his eye on Brewbad.
  • Greed: Enjoys finding things that are potentially valuable to sell later.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: The events of "Scrolls of Not'Chek" has certainly led to this for him, as he spent a good portion of the month-long Time Skip between Scrolls and "The Divine Wind" campaigns drinking heavily.
  • The Leader: While Scribbles and Schmeg can also be voices of reason depending on the situation, the former's neuroticism and the latter's Large Ham tendencies mean that Brewbad tends to be the most consistently level-headed member of the party. Plus, the party frequently refers to him as the "main protagonist" of the group due to the several plot-important events that have happened to or involved him, such as going to the Dream Realm and meeting Madd Morc, obtaining the Lorekeeper Scepter, becoming associated with the Red Pantheon and being inducted as a shaper-in-training, and landing the killing blow against Not'Chek.
  • Neutral Good: His alignment.
  • Our Dwarves Are All the Same: Subverted. Brewbad doesn't know much about stones, doesn't like caves, and prefers water to ale.
  • Papa Wolf: Is easily the most protective of the young emperor.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Brewbad walks away from Regalia while the latter is monologuing.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Or He absolutely despises flying, which makes it unfortunate that the main form of transport in Glies is flying by kite.

Wake the Fuck Up Samurai
Art by Viridea1
Divine Wind appearance
Art by nnichhe
Player: Burn
Race: Aasimar (Protector)
Class: Samurai
——

  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: The childish side seems to retain no memories from his actions as his protector. It's yet to be determined if the reverse is true.
  • Ass Shove: The long and short of what "boofing" is. Among the objects he inserts into his butt are magic crystals and a gold piece.
  • Catchphrase: His shift to Serious!Anaalius is often heralded by the words: "Wake the fuck up, Samurai."
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Anaalius is an... odd fellow, even at the best of times.
  • Cool Sword: Tomorrow, and Now.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Anaalius is a useless goofball most of the time, but when his serious side comes out, he's a force to be reckoned with.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Serious!Anaalius brings out some in one of his clashes against Not'Chek.
  • The Load: Silly!Anaalius is completely useless in combat, spending most of his time playing around, unaware of any battle happening around him.
  • Manchild: Silly!Anaalius is cheery and goofy, and spends time in combat smelling flowers and making sandcastles.
  • Meaningful Name: A man who loves to stick stuff up his ass named Anaalius Penetratius
  • Naked People Are Funny: Spends a lot of Episode 4 pantsless due to needing to boof crystals to gain more information.
  • Non-Action Guy: Silly!Anaalius is basically a non-combatant.
  • Oblivious to Love: He is hilariously unaware of Mataal Ika's crush on him.
  • Odd Friendship: With Mataal Ika.
  • Rule of Three: Engages in three separate Clashes against Not'Chek. Unfortunately, he failed all of them, outright dying as a result of the first, though a handy Revivify Potion brought him back.
  • Split Personality: Has two identities; a childlike goofball who copes with day to day life and a serious protector to defend against threats.
  • The Stoner: Oh yes. Anaalius is a big fan of drugs, and his boofing is a way to trip. His love of dope is so great that it takes coercion and a lot of restraint to not leave a drug-addled Brewbad to drown in favor of getting high on Black Silver. His character art even has a little weed symbol on it.
  • True Neutral: An odd example. Silly!Anaalius is solidly Chaotic Neutral, while Serious!Anaalius is Lawful Neutral, which shakes him out to neutrality as a whole.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Boofing.
  • Warrior Poet: Serious!Anaalius is a skilled samurai who enjoys drinking tea, having philosophical discussions with his fellow swordsmen, and shoving things into his butt.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Anaalius doesn't wear a shirt.
  • Winged Humanoid: In Scrolls they were just sticks on his back, but by the time of The Divine Wind, they've upgraded to full wings, most likely to represent the upgrade to Level 3 giving him access to his Radiant Soul.

    Scrya "Scribbles" Bleu

Scribbles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiwo_scribbles_web.png
Nothing is Forbidden
Art by Leon Cino
Divine Wind appearance
Art by bl00dbite
Player: Kiwo
Race: Tiefling
Class: Sorcerer (Wild Mage)
——

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Scribbles ends up becoming an Apprentice to Tyre by writing a passage into the Scroll of Not'Chek without knowing a lot of the ramifications.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While she's generally a quiet and somewhat anxious girl, her party's antics have gotten her to snap more than once, to the point where they are properly wary of making her angry. Especially when she's holding her crossbow.
  • Butt-Monkey: Even among a very hapless party, Scribbles stands out as getting absolutely no respect from anyone.
  • Control Freak: According to the player. Scribbles is determined to learn how to control her volatile magic and has spent most of her time prior to her adventures in Scrolls of Not'Chek in the library searching for a way to get a hold of the font of power within her. Considering that she's now the Apprentice of Tyre, only time will tell where her ambitions will lead her.
  • Couldn't Find a Pen: When she gets the idea to write passages of her own into the scroll, she has to resort to using a crossbow bolt with the tip soaked in her own blood to do so. Doing it this way specifically leads to her becoming an apprentice of Tyre.
  • Cute Bookworm: A quiet and somewhat shy and clumsy girl who practically lived in the library in her Master's mansion, but tends to get swept along for the ride due to the chaos her party members cause. She is rarely seen without her personal 'Wizard' book that she uses as either a diary more often than not. She has her limits though, and her party is justifiably wary of pissing her off.
  • Depending on the Artist: Kiwo, Scribbles's player, changes her character's token art frequently to showcase the talent of the community's artists. As such, Scribbles has had a variety of changes to her appearance, including skin color, horn length, and bust size.
  • Hearing Voices: During the month timeskip that lead into the Divine Wind, Scribbles heard whispers from an unknown source every night while she slept. It was made clear after a discussion with the Archmage of Gleis Azolon that the source of these whispers was the Mad Wizard Tyre.
  • Image Song: Aren't you tired of being nice?
  • Lawful Good: Her alignment at the start of the adventure, although it shifts to Lawful Neutral after her harrowing experience in the scroll.
  • Nervous Wreck: Her anxiety, combined with the antics of her very chaotic party, causes her to be panicky and easily overwhelmed.
  • No-Respect Guy: No one really gives Scribbles a break.
  • Power Tattoo: Had tattoos of silver moonlight and a symbol of the moon grafted on her forehead and skin after becoming an Apprentice. In Divine Wind this is shown to have formed into three different moon symbols.
  • The Smart Guy: Pegged as the most intelligent party member.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only girl of the party, and the only girl for most of Scrolls of Not'Chek
  • Squishy Wizard: The most fragile party member, but with the firepower to back it up. Most evident in the fight with Norubaga, where she does massive damage to the boss with Burning Hands, but knocks herself out with her own Wild Magic surge.
  • Took A Level In Cynicism: Scribbles' time in the Scroll of Not'Chek does not do much for her optimism, and her alignment shifts to Lawful Neutral at the end of it.

     Notable NPCs

Old Man Sai

  • Cool Sword: Tomorrow, which he passes on to Anaalius when he proves himself worthy of it.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When the party sees his last moments of life, it's clear he went out this way.
  • The Mentor: Was this to Not'Chek.
  • Off with His Head!: Outside of the scroll, this was his fate at the hands of Not'Chek.
  • Old Master: A clear example of this.
  • Plant Person: As a Reedwood Elf. Notably, he has several bamboo shoots growing from his left shoulder.

Not'Chek

  • Badass Boast: He gets a couple of good ones.
    • The first is before the fight with him, in response to Schmeg.
Schmeg(voice gradually growing deeper): And who are you to be the arbiter of where we should and shouldn't be?
Not'Chek: The one who is strong enough to deem it so.
    • He gets another after killing Anaalius and bringing down Mataal Ika in quick succession.
      Not'Chek: THIS IS MY STORY!
  • Big Bad: Of the "Scrolls of Not'Chek" campaign.
  • Blood Magic: He can damage himself to produce Blood Shards, which can independently cast spells similar to Eldritch Blast at opponents.
  • Cool Sword: Yesterday, a slightly corrupted version of Tomorrow. After Anaalius recovers it, he merges its remains with those of Tomorrow to form a new sword, dubbed Now.
  • Eyeless Face: Though it is mostly kept hidden under his hat, when he lifts it, his face is revealed to be like this by the point where he confronts the party.
  • Horned Humanoid: Has a single long horn jutting out through his hat.
  • Life Drain: A number of his abilities allow him to heal himself for part of the damage dealt.
  • Might Makes Right: Given the events of his life, he has come to firmly believe this.
  • Mook Maker: Some of his abilities potentially allowed him to summon Fading Warriors, though he never actually managed to make it happen.
  • Red Baron: The Fablewalker.
  • Red Right Hand: Figuratively and literally, as his right arm is shown to be covered in red, demonic-looking spikes.
  • Screw Destiny: He enters this mode when Scribbles adds her own passages to the scroll to try and force him to surrender. He's put at a considerable disadvantage by this, but still manages to put up a hell of a fight, though he's ultimately defeated.

Chapter 1 Campaigns

Ink and Blood

    Kouki Subeuroko

Kouki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kouki_full.png

Player: Tom Fawkes
Race: Gekoi
Class: Cleric (Undead)
Deity: Crowley
——

  • Bad Powers, Good People: Kouki is not a big fan of his powers over undeath, and tries to avoid using them unless absolutely necessary.
  • First Friend: Implied to be this to Elliot which makes their falling out all the more tragic.
  • I Owe You My Life: A rather literal example, as Kouki literally owes Crowley his life. At one point in his past, Kouki was on the verge of death, and in his desperation pleaded for help to literally anyone who would listen. Unfortunately, he got Crowley, who saved him in exchange for service as his cleric. The only reason he continues to serve the Lord of Undeath is because he's terrified that if Crowley ever stops seeing him as useful, he'll drop dead on the spot. And if that wasn't bad enough, he's also terrified that if he dies for any reason before he can find a way out from under Crowley's thumb, then his soul will belong to Crowley forever.
  • Nice Guy: Friendly, kind, and doesn't make assumptions of people. Notably the only one who holds no ire towards Jerry after his numerous shenanigans.
  • Third-Person Person: Kouki always speaks in the third person, and not just when referring to himself either. He avoids using pronouns altogether, essentially speaking a more intelligent version of Hulk Speak.
    Kouki: Kouki is Kouki.

    Tiri Anand

Tiri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tirianand.jpg

Player: Zeke
Race: Elf (Shar'kai)
Class: Paladin (Time Warden)
Deity: Raquel
——

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Patient and forthright with people most of the time, but he has limits that should not be pushed. Tiri was very close to killing Jerry for using the loom to alter fate.
  • Poke in the Third Eye: Gets a pretty nasty one when the loom handle shows him a vision of the future battle between the "Otikata's Curse" party and the titular Big Bad. Otikata does not take kindly to the interruption. Unfortunately, this renders him catatonic for a little while, which is long enough for Jerry to grab the loom handle and actually use it.
  • Time Police: Part of his duty as per the Oath of the Time Warden. He takes significant issue with the loom handle and symbol of the Seven and their potential to alter fate, which usually leads to semantics arguments with his other party members (read: Jerry) about messing with fate vs. messing with time and whether or not the former falls under his jurisdiction, since fate and time are handled by different goddesses. Apparently it does, since after Jerry alters fate to insert himself into a party, Tiri must prevent him from attending any parties for about one year (the approximate time frame the loom handle could affect) so that his changes don't come to pass, otherwise Raquel will demand that Jerry be killed.

    Ral'Sazesh

    Jerry

Jerry

Art by Sarinjin

Player: Chilled Chaos
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Rogue (Gregorian)
Deity: Black Pantheon
——

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Treated as a rambunctious and hard-to-control child by the rest of the party... and their players.
Ellohime: Oh my God, I just realized we gave him grades!
Arcadum: [cracking up] You gave him grades! You gave him grades!
Ellohime: We gave him gra— He is our child! He is our kid! Cosmically or not, this is our kid!
Tom Fawkes: [also cracking up] The four of us have a child. Jerry and his four dads.
  • Big Brother Worship: Downplayed, as they aren't related, but it's very obvious how much Jerry looks up to Ral. He always defaults to Ral when he needs to share information or opinions with the party, happily lets Ral cast Charm Person on him without even trying to resist it, and even calls Ral his dad at one point.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Jerry's weird and impulsive behaviour means that nobody, not even his own player, can tell what his moral alignment is. They just know that whatever it is, it's definitely Chaotic.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Tends to be off in his own little world most of the time.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Jerry's inexperience and lack of forethought tends to get him in trouble with his fellow party members.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: Part and parcel for a rogue. When Ral revealed his tentacle arms to the party, Jerry's immediate thought was of how good they'd be at stealing things, which is probably why he cozied up to Ral in the first place.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Tends to act without thinking of the consequences, a habit that causes his party a lot of grief.
  • Mundane Utility: When he picks up the loom handle, he immediately sees every vision Tiri had seen regarding potential fates that could be changed. Given the option of saving Tiri from his catatonic state or averting any number of potential bad endings to other campaigns, he chooses... to insert himself into a Mataal Ika concert sometime in the future.
  • No Indoor Voice: Has significant issues being quiet.
  • No-Sell: Again, when he picks up the loom handle, he sees everything Tiri saw, including Otikata, who tries to give him a Poke in the Third Eye like he gave Tiri. He somehow succeeds the Wisdom saving throw Tiri failed and it has no effect. He was just as confused by this as anyone else.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Uses a magical loom handle and a symbol of the Seven to alter fate... by inserting himself into a party/concert in the future, with the intention of making it a rager.

    Elliot Mylic

Elliot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elliotmylic.jpg
Art by Tombag

Player: Ellohime
Race: Human
Class: Monk (Way of Mercy)
Deity: Lorn
——

  • Berserk Button: As a follower of Lorn, he hates the undead. Learning of Kouki's status as an Undead Cleric of Crowley immediately puts a strain on their relationship, and possibly destroys their growing friendship.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Very kind, but it's a bad idea to piss him off. Jerry learns this quickly, as does Kouki. Notably, after witnessing Kouki summoning undead, there was a very real chance that he was going to attack the Gekoi rather than the akuma they were fighting.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Has his own set of morals as a devout follower of Lorn that occasionally conflicts with the party's. Notably when Jerry is describing everyone's alignment, Elliot's is simply ranked as "Elliot".
  • Cool Old Guy: Quite old, and just as combat capable as his party.
  • Creepy Good: Elliot's an unsettling person, but despite his quirks, he's generally the kind and helpful sort.
  • Creepy Monotone: Always speaks very slowly and without much emotion, even when delighted or furious. His voice is often compared to that of the G-Man.
  • Friendless Background: Implied to not have had many friends in life, given how taken aback he is by Kouki's kindness.
  • Odd Friendship: Starts to form one with Jerry, having recognized the rogue as an uncontrollable agent of chaos and decides to go along for the ride rather than attempt to stop him (mostly because he recognizes that any such attempts would be futile).
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Accidentally catches his party by surprise once or twice after scouting ahead.
  • Tranquil Fury: Enters this after Kouki summons undead in front of him.

Among the Reeds/Servants of the Spire

    Kaju Magi

Kaju

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kajumagi_1.png
Who the fuck is Frank?

Player: Aleks
Race: Kobold
Class: Warlock
Patron: The Death That Lives
——

  • Compelling Voice: His "Suggestion" is probably the one skill that he's really had much effectiveness with. In the battle against the bandits, he convinced one to be too frightened of Rattacus to attack him, and when Block hears about their plan to swindle Dozo and goes to try to warn him, Kaju convinces him to return to the tavern instead.
  • Inept Mage: He previously attended a magic school but flunked out.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: In the battle against the bandits, when one catches up to him and deals a minor hit, he calls out to the others in panic about being in danger... while the rest of the party was already incapacitated or very nearly so by that point. Naturally, no one's amused.
  • Sanity Ball: Kaju is the only one with any reservations about performing rituals for Crowley. He's also the only one with any good ideas about how to deal with Machio's depression: namely, an emotional support animal. Then, when meeting with Azolon, Kaju is probably closest to actually treating the situation appropriately (though partially because Machio could not do or say anything at the time, as Willneff could not be present for the session).
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Opts to leave Dik Cok to die rather than rescue him from the Black Silver Bandits, alongside Rattacus.
  • The Stoner: Kaju enjoys all manner of recreational drugs. Pretty much the very first thing he does after his introduction is find a secluded area so he can smoke a blunt, and later he eagerly buys out a shady merchant's entire supply of Black Silver.
  • Too Dumb to Live: After making too much noise in the Depthar nest, everyone else gets to hiding when they realise they attracted attention. What does Kaju do? Just stand there as the bat Depthar make their appearance and spot him, leading to him getting KO’ed by half of them immediately when it’s their turn and before he could even have his own, placed in a cocoon with Dik Cok suffering the same for being too close and trying to save him, both of them then suffering a level of infection.

    Rattacus

Rattacus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rattacus_1.png
I am the funniest person I know.

Player: Penta
Race: Ratfolk
Class: Jester Bard
——

  • Absurd Phobia: Gains a fear of pants after drinking a mixture of random potions that had spilled onto the ground. Presumably it wore off along with the other effects listed below.
  • Blob Monster: Another effect of the potion mixture he drank caused his body to turn into gelatin, though rather than becoming a formless blob he kept his own shape and could still move and attack normally. However, combined with the third effect of the mixture, which caused his fur to turn white, this unfortunately made him look like a sentient, rat-shaped blob of semen. It wears off by the next session.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The deadpannest, and the snarkiest.
  • Death Seeker: Rattacus is suicidal, and often begs for death. In "Servants of the Spire", he's completely on board with letting the Depthar take over and consume everything, since he thinks it means he'll finally get his wish. When it's explained to him that getting zombified actually means he'll exist forever and never be able to truly die, he's horrified and immediately agrees to help stop them.
  • Dirty Coward: He not only tried to run away near the end of the group’s first battle, he’s also attempted to get out of dodge twice at the end of Among the Reeds and during his conversation with Azolon. Both times, the Vizier has caught him. This is coupled with the fact that he’s the one who’s tried to convince the group to scam Dozo, just so they didn’t have to do the work of finding his daughter.
  • The Eeyore: Rattacus is very depressed and speaks in the same flat, emotionless way as the Trope Namer.
  • Fair-Weather Friend: Best shown in the battle against the bandits, when his support would shift repeatedly based on whoever happened to be doing well at the moment. At one point, he tried to ditch the battle altogether (though he did at least heal Machio on his way out), only to come back when the party regained the upper hand.
  • Jerkass: Even Azolon will tell you he is the most thoroughly insufferable member of the party. And in this party, that's really saying something. One of the most notable showing of this is when he uses a spell to convince Machio to embrace the killer in him that everyone believes he has, something of which the Skinwalker likes to remind him constantly and then when Kaju tries to summon a familiar to help Machio feel better? Rattacus readies a spell to make Machio fearful of the creature (though that ends up not being necessary, since the familiar Kaju gets is Mouth, who is creepy enough on his own).
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Especially in "Servants of the Spire", where the party has to undertake a combat-heavy mission that they can't just squirm out of, something clearly well out of his wheelhouse. He insists that the enchanted rope that the party is offered note  is useless, despite both Arcadum and Willneff trying to point out what it does, and how it's actually invaluable given the situation that they're about to be thrust into, and pushes the party to ask for a single magic weapon instead(which he ends up getting). When they're in the Depthar nest, he constantly second-guesses Machio's suggestions, trying to counter Machio's actually-respectable knowledge of both the Depthar and combat in general with the very few bits and pieces he bothered to remember, most of which he seems to have misinterpreted.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Is arguably the most responsible for the group's descent into insanity, all while neatly tossing all blame for it off of himself. Fittingly, he also has a bonus to Persuasion.
  • Master of Disguise: Has the Disguise Self spell, which leads to the party coming up with a plan to have him disguise as a woman and deliberately get kidnapped by the traffickers so they can track down Dozo's daughter. Later he proposes a different plan: He disguises himself as the daughter and the party turns him into Dozo to collect the reward without doing any work. They try the first plan first, which doesn't work. Then he and Kaju split from the party to go try the second plan, which does work... until the rest of the party shows up to try the same plan with Eli disguised as the daughter.
  • Never My Fault: Always redirects blame off of himself to his fellow party members.
  • Sad Clown: Rattacus is very depressed and often wishes for death, despite his goofy jester outfit.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Opts to leave Dik Cok to die rather than rescue him from the Black Silver Bandits, alongside Kaju.
  • Stock Animal Diet: As a rat-man, he really likes cheese.

    Eli Bloodbane

Eli

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elibloodbane.png
I didn't pay attention in my classes, all right? I mean, I really mean it. I was at the back of the classroom, like, throwin' pencils at the ceilin'.

Player: Cyr
Race: Human
Class: Cleric (Blood)
Deity: Crowley
——

  • The Big Easy: Has the voice of a fire-and-brimstone preacher straight out of N'awlins.
  • Book Dumb: Doesn't actually know the first thing about the god he's supposed to be a cleric of, claiming to have never actually studied or paid attention in any of his classes. He still manages to successfully perform rituals to Crowley on pure faith alone, however the second time he performs a ritual, his lack of basic knowledge backfires on him spectacularly and he accidentally starts a Zombie Apocalypse that he has no control over, even slates to die, had he not got a boost from the first ritual being successful. He vows to actually start studying after that.
  • Explosive Leash: The Spire is fully aware of his role in summoning the Depthar; when they place marks on every member of the party before their mission in "Servants of the Spire", they specifically set his to immediately kill him if he tries anything like that again.
  • Functional Addict: Gets addicted to Black Silver after one dose.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Eli personally summoned the Depthar to Glies and gave Crowley a foothold in the region, but it was mainly the result of raw, undiluted incompetence on his part rather than any kind of malice.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: He very quickly realizes that summoning the Depthar was a massive mistake. For most of the first session of "Servants of the Spire"note , he's pretty much the only one completely on board with trying to stop them.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When the party splits, he, Machio, and Dik Cok try the fake daughter plan with him disguised as the daughter since Rattacus isn't around, and since he can't magically disguise himself like Rattacus, he has to do it the old fashioned way. Said disguise consists of gluing cut-off pieces of Machio's hair to his own to make it longer, and possibly putting on a dress. No attempt is made to disguise his glowing white eyes or full beard, or to give him horns to look more like a Ho'ask. It still works, and the only reason they run into problems at all is because Kaju and Rattacus had already done the fake daughter plan themselves, and were still at Dozo's house.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Sheepishly admits that the only reason he managed to become a cleric at all is due to his family's connections, as he put absolutely no effort into his studies, and it shows.

    Machio Manis

Machio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/machiomanis.jpg
...Are we the bad guys?

Player: Willneff
Race: Aasimar (Titan)
Class: Barbarian (Scarseeker)
——

  • Apologetic Attacker: When the rest of the party makes him kill Block, he is profusely and tearfully apologizing to his victim, very much not wanting to go through with it.
  • Barbarian Hero: He tries to be one, but the antics of rest of his party sadly make it impossible for him to be a good guy.
  • BFS: As a Barbarian, his weapon is a two-handed greatsword.
  • The Big Guy: One of the most battle-capable members of the party, doing much of the heavy lifting in the one combat encounter.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: There is nothing sweeter to him than the milk of a Ho'ask woman, to the point that he would gladly accept it instead of money as a reward for rescuing Dozo's daughter.
  • Bound and Gagged: Spends the entire first episode of "Servants of the Spire" this way, because Willneff was busy and unable to attend the session.
  • Canon Foreigner: "Titan Aasimar" is not a real subrace in any edition of Dungeons & Dragons - it's a homebrew subrace made up specifically for Machio to justify his size shifting.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: The "Bush Plan". He gathered the party into a wagon that they had found and piled bushes on top of them so that he could travel the forest posing as a "bush-seller". When confronted by bandits intent on stealing his wares, he managed to convince them to fix his wagon wheel first, perfectly positioning them for the hidden party members to attack. This actually succeeds in catching the entire group of bandits off-guard, allowing the party to kill two of them before they even have a chance to retaliate, which Arcadum makes clear is in large part due to how utterly ludicrous the plan was.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Machio has a crisis after killing Block for basically no reason. This isn't helped by the fact that his party members constantly harass him for this after the fact, and place the blame entirely on him when they were the ones who forced him to do it.
  • Expy: An extremely blatant one of "Macho Man" Randy Savage. OOOOH YEEEAUH!
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Once he really got going in the battle against the bandits, the bandits he killed generally ended up this way.
  • Only Sane Man: Yes, the Large Ham barbarian who talks like "Macho Man" Randy Savage is head and shoulders above the rest of the party regarding competence and sense. Especially the case in "Servants of the Spire", where he's the only one who seems to have any inkling of the danger that the party has found themselves in, and is the only one who makes a genuine effort to take in the information on the Depthar that Alice offers them. He tries to take on a leadership role to improve the party's unity and coordination, aware that they're pretty much guaranteed to fail without that.
  • Overly Pre-Prepared Gag: His Pre-Asskicking One-Liner before the first battle of the campaign, which is the culmination of the "Bush Plan" outlined above:
Machio: I got bad news. We only have one type of bush for sale.
    Bandit: What's that?
    Machio: IT'S AN AM-BUSH!
  • Retirony: Nonlethal variant. Machio comes to the conclusion that the group is terrible at adventuring, and plan on settling down at a bar and forgetting the whole escapade after it ends... right before the group gets caught for their actions.
  • Sizeshifter: As a Titan Aasimar, he has the ability to temporarily double in size.
  • Supreme Chef: His goal at the start was to become one of these, but that goal is increasingly unlikely to be achieved as the campaign spirals further and further into insanity. He does later come closer to it by taking the 'Chef' feat when the party attains Level 4.
  • Token Good Teammate: The only member with any sort of moral compass, although it quickly gets smashed and pissed on by his party. Notably the only member who finds any issue with the plan to return a fake daughter to Dozo to collect the reward without doing any work.
  • Urine Trouble: Getting pissed on is apparently the punishment for stealing where he comes from, as Dik Cok finds out the hard way.

    Dik Cok

Dik Cok

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dikcok_1.jpg
So, little Rattacus here was twitchin' and foamin' at the mouth. For all intents and purposes, we thought he might have been dying. So, we stripped him down, I made a dress out of a tablecloth and stapled it to his fucking shoulders, and you're asking me "Are we the bad guys?!"

Player: Spaceboy
Race: Goblin
Class: Rogue (Gregorian)
Deity: Black Pantheon
——

  • Accidental Misnaming: Cannot for the life of him remember names of people not in his party, even right after they say it. It's unclear if it's intentional or if he's just that stupid. Presumably the latter, given what's listed under The Ditz below.
  • Affably Evil: He's an idiotic kleptomaniac and probably the second nastiest member of the party after Rattacus, but he's a pretty chummy guy towards the people he likes and is even shown to be rather protective of his "friends".
  • Butt-Monkey: Gets peed on, gets his eyepatch used as a thong, gets hurled into a river and goes over a waterfall, gets repeatedly sent to the Dream Realm over and over, gets trapped in the midst of a Depthar/Mistwalker clash, gets turned to stone... the list goes on.
  • The Ditz: Directly stated to be such by his player. When Dik Cok tries to pickpocket an illusion he's being shown of a prisoner who, in addition to not being real, clearly would have nothing of value on him even if he was, Arcadum points out how obviously impossible that is, to which Spaceboy retorts that Dik Cok really is dumb enough to try it.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears it to look cool. After the pants-phobic Rattacus convinces the rest of the party to ditch their pants, Machio takes it and fashions it into a thong to cover himself. He tries to return it a couple episodes later but needless to say, Dik Cok doesn't really want it back after where it's been… Until he finds it’s not so bad.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Calling him a friend at all is a stretch. Dik Cok is brought back from petrification against the rest of his party's wishes, despite his attachment to them.
  • Full-Name Basis: Rarely, if ever, addressed by anything other than his full name.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: Calling him (or anyone in the party) a hero is a huge stretch, but he tries to pickpocket pretty much everyone he encounters, to varying levels of success. When Azolon conjures up an illusion of the prison the party would be sent to if they don't do what he says, he tries to pickpocket one of the illusory prisoners.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Is quite capable in combat, singlehandedly taking out nearly as many bandits as Machio, and scared off their leader to boot. However, since this is the only real combat encounter the party ends up in, this doesn't help him much after that, and by the time of "Servants of the Spire", it's been pretty much forgotten by everyone save Dik Cok himself.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Is capable of sewing, which he justifies by likening it to stabbing repeatedly with very tiny blades.
  • Screaming Warrior: Every attack he unleashes is accompanied by a slew of profanity.
  • Stealth-Based Mission: Ends up in one after being captured and knocked out, then waking up right in the middle of the Zombie Apocalypse that Eli had mistakenly brought about, leaving him with little choice but to try and sneak out of the situation undetected. Fortunately for him, he succeeds.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: After getting pissed on by everyone else as punishment for constant stealing, he admits that it wasn’t so bad. And he finds himself not too bothered by Machio putting his eyepatch back on him after the latter worn it as a makeshift thong for a while.
  • Unfortunate Names: His name is Dik Cok, pronounced exactly how you think it is, which gets the expected reaction whenever he introduces himself.

    Notable NPCs

Block

  • He Knows Too Much: The party discuss their plan to return an imposter in place of Dozo's daughter right in front of him.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: A standard bartender NPC, until Machio being forced to kill him effectively ends his attempts at remaining a heroic character.
  • Supreme Chef: According to Machio, he is a culinary master.
  • Walking Spoiler: As a fairly nondescript NPC, there's not much reason for him to have an individual entry here, other than that the party forces Machio to murder him.

Dozo Gourd

  • Cannot Tell a Lie: As a Ho'Ask, he refuses to lie as a part of his culture. As you might expect, this results in him getting extra pissed when he realizes that that the party tried to get out of rescuing his daughter by bringing him an imposter instead.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Let's just say that entrusting this party with getting his daughter back wasn't the wisest move.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When the party returns from their initial task pretty much empty-handed save for news that the caravan was destroyed and his daughter was kidnapped, he recognizes that they did accomplish what he asked and pays them with no further complaint. He treats his request for them to recover his daughter as a separate task.

Elwreath

  • Author Avatar: There's a brief moment of this with him when he's torturing Dik Cok for information, when he chastises Dik Cok for not bothering to remember any details of the campaign he was taking part in. Though Arcadum makes clear that this is just good-natured ribbing and not meant to be taken too seriously.
  • Good Powers, Bad People: His healing abilities are put to use to torture Dik Cok by repeatedly knocking him out to send him to the Dream Realm, healing him just enough to rouse him, and then knock him out again the next time he's caught lying. He continues this until he runs out of healing spells, at which point he leaves Dik Cok in the Dream Realm until he wakes up on his own.
  • Living Lie Detector: Has a spell that allows him to sense lies, and punishes Dik Cok every time the Goblin tries to lie to him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His camp was overrun by the Deptharian corruption unleashed by Eli, and one of his lieutenants is shown being killed by the Fleshcrimes that came about as a result of it, but his own fate is currently uncertain.

Mouth

  • Eyeless Face: His face consists of nothing more than an oversized, toothy maw.
  • Familiar: He's Kaju's familiar. Note that Kaju is not happy about this, since he's just as creeped out by Mouth as everyone else and desired something else like a Succubus, but he's stuck with him whether he likes it or not.
  • Hold Your Hippogriffs: He uses "I'll be saved" in place of "I'll be damned", since as a demon he presumably considers being damned to be a good thing. Arcadum is subsequently disappointed that nobody got the joke.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Kaju's intent was to summon an emotional support animal to help Machio get over his trauma from killing Block. He got Mouth instead. To Mouth's credit, he does help Machio... kind of.
  • Obviously Evil: When Kaju tries to present a disguised Rattacus to Dozo with Mouth in tow, Arcadum doesn't bother with a Deception check for him because, as he put it, there's absolutely no chance that the Ho'Ask will trust anything he has to say.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Tends to get uncomfortably close when speaking to someone.
  • Not Helping Your Case: At the start of "Servants of the Spire" when meeting with Azolon, the rest of the party pushes Kaju to summon him so he can vouch for their side of the story. His presence... doesn't help, to say the least.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: The hyper-cheery Ho'Ask who looks like a walking sundae is also a dedicated follower of Crowley, as shown when she gleefully desecrates a Glien shrine in his name.
  • Brutal Honesty: As a Ho'Ask, she's against lying by default, but she in particular doesn't mince words about what she thinks.
  • Combat Medic: Being a cleric of Crowley gives her some extra weapon attacks through "War Priest". Even beyond that, though, she's often in the thick of any fighting that's going on.
  • Eyes Always Shut: LilyPichu has mentioned that she portrays Aisu this way, and she is depicted that way in her character art.
  • Genki Girl: A very energetic and cheerful woman, almost aggressively so.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: As her first ability from her Path of The Singing Blade, she can have one melee strike hit all enemies within twenty feet of her for Thunder damage.
  • Meaningful Name: Aisu Kurimu really likes ice cream.
  • Nothing Nice About Sugar and Spice: She's frillied up in a dress and bows, but she's in dedicated service to Crowley, and has little trouble fighting on the front lines. As one Bad Future uncovered by the "Ink and Blood" party suggests, she's potentially willing to butcher her own party if her service to Crowley calls for it.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Will occasionally comment on her party members in a way that sounds much like this. When called out on it, she points out that, as a Ho'Ask, she wouldn't use sarcasm, as it would be dishonesty. Though this takes on a bit of a new light when it becomes clear that she actually has no problem with lying at all.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: If it wasn't immediately obvious from her looks and name, ice cream. She'll even settle for something that looks vaguely like ice cream in a pinch.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: Comes part and parcel of being a Ho'Ask. Except not so much in her case, as she proves willing to try to cover for desecrating a shrine right in front of her party, despite their warnings and attempts to stop her, by claiming that she was possessed into doing it. During her interactions with Lord Soma, it becomes clear that she has no problems with lying at all, and it's implied that she was exiled from her original clan over it.

    Buroken

Buroken

Art by datsean

Player: Brodin
Race: Yokai (Kappa)
Class: Rogue (Thief)
Path: The Deep Blade
——

  • Blade on a Rope: His signature weapon, a hook crafted from bone and affixed to the end of a line.
  • Chained by Fashion: He has fleshy, water-logged chains around his neck after becoming cursed by the book of The Deep Blade.
  • Combat Tentacles: The spirit arms he possesses as a Yokai take this form.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: The very first thing that happens in the campaign is him going into a shop and stealing a bag. Later, when the party is with Svelt, Buroken swipes a magic ring from his shelves. Fittingly, he chose Thief as his subclass.
  • Pirate: His profession prior to the campaign.
  • Salt Solution: In the party's first combat encounter, he gets the idea to hurl some salt he had picked up earlier at a spectral enemy, which purifies it for a One-Hit Kill. Taken almost to the point of parody for the remainder of the session, where he throws salt on just about everything he comes across, to the point of becoming Your Answer For Everything.

    Mungus

Mungus

Player: Disguised Toast
Race: Human (Illithari)
Class: Wizard (Void Mage)
Patron: The Gambler Black
Path: The Bane Blade
——

  • Aloof Ally: Tends to do his own thing for the most part.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Is just a touch too open-ended when he makes a pact with The Gambler Black for power, and in the process loses his familiar and the three winged serpents he had hatched earlier when they merge to form The Smiling Saint.
  • Classy Cane: Gains one when he makes a pact with The Gambler Black, which merges with the winged serpents that he had hatched earlier to form The Smiling Saint.
  • Cool Crown: As an Illithari, he has a series of gemstones growing from his head to give the appearance of one.
  • Deal with the Devil: After playing around with magic scrolls, he ended up making a pact with The Gambler Black.
  • The Empath: As an Illithari, he is shown to be this to some extent.
  • Smoke Out: His 'Fog Cloud' spell.
  • The Stoic: To the point that getting attacked elicits little more than an unenthusiastic "Ow" from him.
  • Unluckily Lucky: In the party's first combat encounter, Mungus gets stuck dealing with two Dishonored Warriors pretty much the whole time, and every one of his attacks miss. However nearly all of the attacks that the warriors throw at him miss as well, allowing him to survive until Buroken can step in.

    Mamo Socko

Socko

Player: Fuslie
Race: Tiefling
Class: Bard (College of Swords)
Path: The Shining Blade
——

  • Blinded by the Light: Her first ability gained through the Path of the Shining Blade allows her to try and inflict this on enemies that she strikes in melee.
  • The Ditz: Certainly has her moments of this, especially when she continued attempting to negotiate with Lord Soma in the middle of combat with him, despite it being brazenly obvious that the party had driven him long past his Rage Breaking Point by then, and how she didn't even have any intention of returning the item they stole from his shrine, the one thing that might've had a chance at placating him.
  • Giver of Lame Names: Both Mungus and Romulus criticize her owlbear's name of Sock.
  • Holy Halo: Gained one upon reading the book of The Shining Blade.
  • Sizeshifter: She can invoke this with her Enlarge and Reduce spells.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Can understand Owlbears specifically, resulting in her being the only one able to communicate with her companion Sock.
  • Trash Talk: Weaponized with Vicious Mockery.

    Sus'ke

Art by datsean

Player: Ryan Higa
Race: Changeling
Class: Rogue (Swashbuckler)
Path: The Immortal Blade of Tyre
——

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: When in the scroll room, she searches for one with information on Immortality. What she got was a locked scroll that, once opened, cursed her to follow the Way of the Immortal Blade, and so must regularly kill enemies in combat or be overcome by a killing frenzy.
  • Chained by Fashion: She has spectral chains around her wrists after becoming cursed by the book of The Immortal Blade.
  • Cross Player: Zigzagged. The male Ryan Higa plays a Changeling, which are by definition all female, but Sus'ke spends most of her time in a male form.
  • Expy: Her name and preferred look are clearly drawn from Sasuke Uchiha.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: The very first thing she does in the campaign is hunt down a mirror. After all, she comes from the Yang Clan, who more or less have this as their hat.
  • Twinkle Smile: She invokes this by having Mungus cast "Light" on her teeth while exploring a cave.
  • Whip Sword: Gained a whip made of sword shards and her own blood.

    Notable NPCs

Romulus

The Smiling Saint

Sock

  • Author Avatar: Arcadum occasionally voices his own interjections through him, such as questioning why everyone more or less brushed off Aisu desecrating a shrine for Crowley, pointing out that they just walked right through a room filled with scrolls when a significant part of why they were there was to gather information, then regretting doing this when the party used said scrolls to casually inflict curses on themselves.
  • Blow You Away: Can do this with his wingbeats while Mamo Socko is boosting his size.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's scared of just about everything, but does what Mamo Socko asks of him regardless.
  • Flight: He's capable of it, but he's also scared of flying, so he doesn't go very high.
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: Arcadum occasionally speaks through him to refresh Mamo's memory on what her character is capable of doing in combat.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: As an Owlbear.
  • Sapient Steed: The party uses him to get around and he can understand what they're saying, though only Mamo Socko can understand him in return.

The Final Toll

    Al'Tael

Al'Tael

Player: Zizaran
Race: Aasimar
Class: Paladin (Redemption)

  • BFS: He has a Greatsword as his weapon.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: His Cool Sword is made of Jade, which also happens to be the main currency of Glies, basically resulting in this effect.
  • Combat Medic: As a Paladin, he has healing spells in addition to his attacking prowess.
  • Cool Sword: "Tok's Investment", a jade BFS that allows him to provide a buff to his party that temporarily grants advantage on saving throws.
  • Terror Hero: During the battle with the highwaymen, he mostly tries to intimidate them into surrender. When he delivers a Badass Boast after managing to recover from defeat on his own via a natural 20 on a Death Save, that successfully convinces them to get the hell out of there.
  • Winged Humanoid: As an Aasimar.

  • Oblivious to Love: He generally doesn't seem to notice the NPCs that show attraction to him.
  • Support Party Member: In combat, he largely focuses on healing and making use of his buffs like Aid and Bless.

Player: Devin Nash
Race: Yozai (Yurei)
Class: Wizard (Onmyoji)
——

  • Emotion Bomb: With his 'Tasha's Hideous Laughter' spell.
  • Genius Ditz: Though he is certainly senile, he is also a Scholar from the Sejong Clan. In-game, a good deal of lore the party uncovers comes from his high rolls in History, Religion, and the like.
  • Ghost Memory: Upon reading the Fable, he spontaneously gains memories of the Taladoni from his refraction, Wisp of the "Tearing Veil" party.
  • I Meant to Do That: During the battle with the highwaymen, everything he tried to do missed, with Arcadum mentioning that the stray Eldritch Blasts ended up hitting some nearby squirrels. After the battle was over, Rinzai claimed that the squirrels were a threat to the party and he was targeting them on purpose.
  • Paper Talisman: He is an Onmyoji Wizard, which are primarily known as tag-makers.
  • Playing with Fire: With his Scorching Ray and Flaming Sphere.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Very forgetful and goofy, sometimes forgetting important details about the adventure and himself.
  • Shock and Awe: During the Time Skip, he spent his time researching spells, resulting in him learning both the Lightning Bolt spell and the ability to, to some extent, avoid causing Friendly Fire he might otherwise deal with Lightning damage.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Claims to be the most powerful wizard in Glies... when he remembers he's a wizard at all.

    Tok

Tok

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tok.png

Player: Pestily
Race: Hobgoblin
Class: Rogue (Thief)
——

  • Combat Pragmatist: When the party comes across the group of highwaymen that they're looking for, he's quick to suggest simply killing them all while they're sleeping.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: He tries, but starts off rather unsuccessful. He has considerably better luck during the Time Skip though, as mentioned below.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: During the Time Skip between episodes three and four, he succeeds at stealing the family blade from Tokichiro Banakai's estate.
  • Plague Doctor: His overall look, shared with his player's logo.
  • Uncle Pennybags: Has far and away the most Jade of the party after his heists during the Time Skip, and readily provides Al'Tael the Jade he needed to forge his Cool Sword (which is named for him as a result).
  • Vocal Dissonance: A grim looking plague doctor-esque rogue... who has the voice of a goofy falsetto.

    Yuka Lyptus

Yuka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuka_7.jpg

Player: ZiggyD
Race: Whitewood Elf
Class: Ranger (Onimetsu)
——

  • Demon Slaying: As an Onimetsu Ranger, he specializes in hunting Akuma.
  • Exact Words: When Tokichiro Banakai catches the party in battle with Eclipse soldiers in the theater, he demands that they explain themselves, specifically in concise, short sentences. Yuka succeeds, perhaps a little better than Tokichiro had in mind.
Yuka: Legacy... scroll... open... fate... save everyone.
    Tokichiro: Alright, perhaps medium-length sentences.
  • In a Single Bound: With his 'Jump' spell.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: During the Time Skip between episodes three and four, he spent his time cleansing a long-time haunting at the docks of Bal'Lok.
  • Paper Talisman: As an Onimetsu Ranger, he makes use of these to cast his spells.

  • Punny Name: He's a Plant Person named Yuka Lyptus.
  • Weaponized Headgear: An Ajirogasa, from which the tags that he uses for casting are hanging on strings.
