East Europan Imperial Alliance: X-0

Lancers in general

  • Continuing is Painful: Due to the inherited lousy accuracy and poor movement potential of the class, it will likely take multiple CPs just to get one in position and open fire... Only to miss that enemy tank's radiator. Needless to say, your average player will probably reach for the "load" button.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: The Lancers' job is to destroy tanks. That's pretty much all they can do. Their lances are too inaccurate to be of any use against infantry, their lack of intercepting fire makes them sitting ducks against enemy soldiers, and they have so little movement range that it's really not worth bringing them in unless you know they'll be needed. All this is handily ignored by the AI, which will happily spend CP on lancers to try and shoot your foot soldiers with relatively greater accuracy than you can.
    • Mortar lances let them take down human targets, but equipping those comes at the cost of the Lancers' tank-busting abilities, losing the one thing they bring to the field in exchange for something that other units can do just as well anyway.
  • Mighty Glacier: They move at a snail's pace due to their massive weapons, and have low AP to begin with. However, few can survive a dead-on shot to the noggin from a lance rocket without the damage reduction of sandbags. The problem is actually getting the shots to hit what you want them to, however, as unless sufficiently upgraded, lances have horrible accuracy when fired at anything smaller than a tank.
    • Their durability does become rather notable, however. Late-game enemy lancers can survive multiple headshots, while your own can eventually survive multiple shocktrooper's machine guns. They also notably acquire anti-blast effects, making them almost immune to the normally-troublesome grenadiers
  • One-Hit Kill: Any Lancer with the Tank Destroyer potential can one-shot a non-boss enemy tank regardless of where they hit it and with what lance Infantry will almost never survive, unless they're behind sandbags.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome:
    • Lancers have one job: take out enemy tanks. Except Grenadiers are much better at it since they have vastly superior range and accuracy, with the added bonus of being able to do it without needing line-of-sight.
    • Eventually, your snipers will gain access to anti-tank sniper rifles which allows them to 1-shot enemy tanks from halfway across field; outclassing the Lancers and Grenadiers by a considerable margin.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun: Almost any female Lancer can have this effect, due to their lithe bodies and the fact that lances grow in size as they are upgraded. At max level, some lances can be ten feet long or more, while their operators barely changed in physique, thus leading to amusing sights like the incredibly skinny Gertrude Albright lugging a massive tube almost twice her height around the battlefield, looking no worse for wear.
  • Situational Sword: As ever, the Lancaar Mortar Lances. They are ostensibly designed for better performance against groups of infantry behind sandbags, whom Snipers may struggle against. The problem arises when one take into consideration that Mortar Lances have very short range, which practically forces the already slow-as-molasses Lancers to trudge their way up to what they're supposed to hit and must have ample line of sight, since Lances as a whole are not very accurate. If it comes to it, Mortar Lances could perform serviceably against tanks, but only the lightest of the bunch and not much else.

  • Fatal Family Photo: He keeps a photo of his family on him, although whether it becomes fatal is up to the player.
  • I'm Cold... So Cold...: At the end of "Unfortunate Souls" just as he, Lily and Odin get back to base, he feels this trope and collapses. Turns out he was just exhausted.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: What his gunshot in the Squad Story turns out to be. It just that the moderate blood loss combined with the gunshot itself, running into and then out of battle is enough to cause him to pass out.
  • Please Wake Up: After he passes out, Odin yells at him to open his eyes before shouting his name. He was just tired from all the action.
  • Retirony: Invoked, mentions how he just needs to complete one last tour before he can go home to his wife and child.
  • Team Dad: Plays the sorely-needed peacemaker between Lily and Odin, as the latter just so happens to been so chuuni to bemuse/annoy even the perpetually pessimistic Lily.
  • Tempting Fate: The man is such a walking collection of Retirony and Red Shirt tropes that even his comrades are aware of it and are afraid to be deployed with him. One example is in "Unfortunate Souls" where he hears a rustling and thinks it's just an animal, only for it to indeed be the Imps. Lily considers him so unlucky that, combined with her bad luck, it wraps around to being very lucky.
  • Two First Names: Both Jimmy and Frank are common male given names, and are rarely ever used as family names. He shares this quirk with his buddy Thomas.
  • Together in Death: Platonic version. He was about ready to die together with Lily in "Unfortunate Souls" when they're caught by a shocktrooper. It's thanks to Odin's rescue that it's subverted.

Likes: Vancey Fioré, Fleuret Valois; Zaiga (after squad story)

  • Character Development: Moves past her prejudices with the help of Zaiga and Vancey and becomes much more accepting. If she survives the war she ends up becoming a civil rights activist.
  • Fantastic Racism: Initially looked down on all Darscen as having "inferior" characters. Fortunately she gets over it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She attempts to pull one during her squad story. Thanks to the efforts of Vancey and Zaiga, and Raz's timely arrival, she didn't bite it.
  • Honor Before Reason: Believes a noble should always keep their head up in the battlefield and refuses to hide from pursuing Imperials even when outnumbered. This makes her one of a small handful of units who shouldn't take cover, as Warzone Etiquette will lower her Defense, making the cover's protection moot. Also the reason why she ends up surrounded multiple times in her Squad Story, as lampshaded by a exasperated Zaiga.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her insults toward Zaiga's heritage have no real ground to stand on, she does have a point in calling him out on his overreliance on Raz. It ultimately pushes him into becoming a better soldier on his own merits. He even even acknowledges this himself later in their squad story, which combined with her apologizing for her racism, helps build a friendship between the two of them.
  • Lady of War: But of course.
  • Mighty Glacier: As if she wasn't slow enough as a Lancer, Gertrude has the lowest Dodge stat in her class, tied with Jean Matrix and Keigel Hohmann.
  • Noble Bigot: In spades, with her sore spot regarding her contempt for the Darcsen, at least at first. Thing is, Gertrude is not a jerk for the sake of being one, she's been conditioned to think like this and never questioned it, taking it as a simple, matter-of-fact truth of their world. The moment Zaiga shows her otherwise she has no problem eating her own words, going so far as to serve as a civil rights activists after the war.
  • Non-Idle Rich: She's the heiress to a wealthy aristocratic family, but joined the Edinburgh Army out of a sense of noble pride. She becomes fully-committed to this cause after the completion of her squad story, due to the newly-gained belief that nobles are obligated to care for the people under them, should lead by example, and be the change that they want to see in the world.
  • Ojou: She's the young heiress to a family of wealthy aristocrats, which (initially) instills a sense of Fantastic Racism towards the Darcsens. Obligatory Hime Cut and Ojou Ringlets are part of the package.
  • One-Hit Kill: Her Tank Destroyer potential virtually guarantees that any non-boss tank she hits is instantly reduced to scrap metal, regardless of where her lance hits or with what weapon. This also applies to any infantry or turret she hits while under Tank Destroyer's effect, despite them not being, well, tanks.
  • Pride: Befitting an aristocrat, Gertrude is very proud of her status as an elite, and will not see herself stooping down to the level of peasants even if her life is on the line. This is presented in her extreme reluctance, if not outright refusal, to crouch down into the dirt to avoid enemy fire. No, she would rather die standing than crawling in the mud. That, and her initial discrimination towards Darcsens, due to her viewing them as lowly and crude.
  • Recurring Element: A secret character who only joins if you have at least one million ducats, like Knute from the first Valkyria Chronicles.
  • Secret Character: Is only recruited if the player has at least one million DCT in their funds.
  • Smart People Speak the Queen's English: Talks in a rather posh, measured manner; she can go toe-to-toe with Minerva in this regard.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Although her squad story (side stories that focus on some of your non-main character units) takes place in the same location that Chapter 4 of VC 4 occurred in, it is more than likely that, with the massive amount of money you need to unlock her (1 million DCT!) you'll unlock her long after her story takes place canonically.
  • The Stoic: It comes with the territory of being an Ojou.
  • Tsundere: Gertrude actually cares a lot more about people than her demeanor lets on, as Vancey notes. In particular, she seems to be rather interested in Zaiga after completing their squad story, but she will deny it if you tell that to her face.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Gertrude really likes tea, and fears the lack of it much more than enemy bullets and bombs. One of her potentials (Teatime) allow her to randomly regain HP during turn, and her Tragic Keepsake item is a posh tea set that boosts Defense of the user.
Gertrude: A lack of tea would kill me more surely than any bullet. You'd understand if you were a noble.

    Jean Matrix

Jean Matrix

Voiced by: Masumi Asano (JP)
Rank: Private
Age: 29
Likes: Stanley Barclay, Ferrier Blancheur, Viola Bryce

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Jean is very physically strong and she is not modest about it at all. She went undefeated in an arm wrestling competition at the field HQ and even bragged about sending some of her opponents to Karen for medical treatment. And Jean uses her bare hands to break the lock on Ferrier's mask, something most people her size can't do.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: How she met her eventual husband.
  • Happily Married: She speaks of her husband quite fondly.
  • The Lad-ette
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Her husband is described as "the opposite of her, quiet and physically slight".
  • Shout-Out: She's a Race Lift and Gender Flip of John Matrix from Commando, down to her name. Some of her quotes are even taken from a couple of Schwarzenegger's most famous movies:
to Stanley in their Squad Story: "Remember when I promised to kill you last, Stanley? I lied."
when assigned as a leader: "Come with me if you want to live."
  • Token Minority: In the Lancer unit, Jean's the only one who comes from an African Expy background.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: One that is made out of dreadlocks.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: She is shown to be unbeatable at Arm Wrestling, and after the war she goes on to win world championship - yet she could never best her wimpy husband. The reason? She was always too flustered about holding his hand.
  • You Never Asked: She accidentally drops a photo of her husband at one point, which Ferrier sees and is surprised to find out she's married and wonders why Jean never revealed this. Nobody ever asked Jean about her personal life before so there was never any need to tell anyone.

Rank: Private
Age: 25
Likes: Aoife, Jascha Alatt, Stanley Barclay

  • Boisterous Bruiser: Energetic and has a tendency to shout even during stealth operations.
  • Eating Solves Everything: Hanna offers to cook for Jascha, whichever his favourite may be, as much as he can have of it, as consolation for his confession to Aoife going nowere.
  • Hooked Up Afterwards: She tries to get Jascha and Aoife together, but fails because Aoife is already engaged. Hanna ends up spending more time with Jascha after being impressed with his smarts and they end up marrying after the war.
  • The Matchmaker: Conspires to bring Jascha and Aoife together once it seems like they have feelings for each other.
  • No Indoor Voice: Or so her personnel files says. In most of her cutscene interactions, she almost never raises her voice. It only becomes an issue during gameplay, where her "Big Mouth" personal Potential has a chance of triggering whenever she's hiding in tall grass. If it does, it gives away her position and lowers her evasion.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: How she reacts when Riley suggests she and Jascha should try dating instead. Both are not amused. They end up married after the war.
  • Opposites Attract: Hanna is lively, enthusiastic, and tends to follow her heart. She ends up falling in love with Jascha and marrying him after the war.
  • Team Chef: Also works as a chef aboard the Centurion.

    Brittany Scarlett

Brittany Scarlett

Voiced by: Reimi (JP), Michelle Ruff (EN)
Rank: Private
Age: 44
Likes: Millennia Hudson, Rita Raywater, Eileen Blackwell

  • Does Not Like Men: After her divorce, she stopped considered dating again and wants to remain a single mother. Her Done with Men potential lowers her accuracy when she is near male soldiers. She starts to grow past this after the war, becoming open to the idea of marrying again.
  • Domestic Abuse: Her husband used to beat her and this is her reason for not liking men.
  • My Girl Back Home: Her only worry in life seems to be her daughter Becky, as she's fighting in the war to ensure she gets to grow up in a peaceful world.
  • Team Mom: She is the oldest female character in the squad and is often turned to by the younger women for life advice. Invoked by her unlockable potential, which is actually named Team Mom.
  • Those Two Guys: She really seems to hit it of with Rita over their respective brands of woes with men.

Rank: Medical Officer
Age: 35

Sergio is the Centurion's Medical Officer, now operating as a Lancer. For tropes related to his character, visit the Federation Navy page.
  • The Medic: His Ragnaid can heal for more than its usual value, owing to Sergio's medical knowledge.
  • No-Sell: Due to his experiences with ailments and his Acquired Poison Immunity, Sergio's Poison Tolerance potential enables him to completely shrug off status effects from enemy weapons for the entire duration of the turn that triggered it.
