The Valerian Liberation Front

Comprised of defectors from the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom, this organization is led by Cerya Phoraena in order to challenge Exarch Brantyn's rule and bring peace back through subversive means. Many of their members supported King Dorgalua's policies for a unified Valeria, though they are generally distrusted by other factions including the Walister Resistance.

    The Warrior Cerya

Cerya Phoraena (Selye Foriner)

Voiced by: Run Sasaki (JP;Sega Saturn), Mayumi Sako (JP;Reborn), Julie Nathanson (EN;Reborn)

The Bakram leader of the Valeria Liberation Front. She's the oldest of the Phoraena sisters, daughters of Archiereus Mreuva Phoraena. She used to be a priestess in the Order of Philaha but got fed up with the politics and once her mother died, she left the Philaha Order and formed the Liberation Front, with Cistina as the vice-leader, to oppose Brantyn. Tough and a realist, she's more than willing to use bloodshed as a means to reach her goal. In the Lawful route she goes down with the rest of the Liberation Front, but she can be recruited in the Chaotic and Neutral route.

  • Adaptational Badass: In the original SNES/PSX version, her Fate Worse than Death ended with an obvious Rape Discretion Shot as she screamed and begged the Dark Knights to unhand her. In the remade PSP/Reborn version, while the scene still ends in a Rape Discretion Shot she acts with a Defiant to the End attitude and gets a "Facing the Bullets" One-Liner of "Go on and try!".
  • Aloof Big Sister: She puts up a distant, tough exterior as the leader of the Liberation Front. When she joins the party, she allows herself to be less guarded and more honest.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the past, she did one, when both Olivya and Denam were about to drown.
  • Black Magician Girl: While she starts out as a Valkyrie with some focus on physical combat, as a Phoraena sister she has access to the unique Shaman class and its unique offensive magic.
  • Defiant to the End: In the Lawful route, Denam never rescues her and in her last scene, some Lodis knights are about to have their way with her. In the PSP translation, her last line before the scene cuts away is to defiantly tell them to even try. Averted in the PlayStation translation where she is last seen begging them to stay away from her. Either way, she isn't seen again after this.
  • Fate Worse than Death: In the Lawful route, Denam isn't there to save her when Oz and Ozma destroy the Liberation Front at Boed. Torture Technician Oz decides to just hand her over to his men, who claim they'll "put her to good use", with the heavy implication that she's going to be raped and/or tortured for their amusement. Unlike Prancet or Lanselot, she's never found again, implying that she either died at some point or was shipped off to Lodis.
  • Fire Is Red: Her elemental affinity is Fire and she has red as her Color Motif.
  • Foreshadowing: If Cistina dies in the PSP version during the battle in chapter one, she calls out Cerya. Denam then says, "Where have I heard that name before?" Because Denam actually knew the four sisters when he was younger.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Played With. She doesn't seem to recognize Denam when they meet in the Chaotic route, but by the time you meet her again, she's already aware of his true identity as Abuna Prancet's son. That said, despite her joining the party at the end of chapter 3 in the Chaotic route, she never tells Denam what she knows of him and Prancet.
  • Hero of Another Story: She has been fighting Bakram forces the entire time Denam is dealing with southern Valeria, and even manages to rescue Abuna Prancet from Heim, disturning the plans of the Dark Knights.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She's actually gentle-hearted but had to put up a tough bitch persona as The Leader of the Liberation Front (she actually asked Denam to take care of Cistina after the latter stormed off in disagreement). And when confronting Sherri, she's the only one who has nothing but rough words.
  • It's Personal: In the Chaotic route, the Lodis Knights decimate her rebellion group, leaving her as the Sole Survivor. When she fights against Oz and Ozma again during the final battle of chapter 3, she proclaims her desire to avenge her comrades and to kill their butchers.
  • Magic Knight: Her starting class is a Valkyrie, skilled in both magical and physical combat.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: She can’t be recruited on the Law route; thus she cannot fight alongside Vyce, Ozma, Ravness, Xapan, Jeunan or Ocionne.
  • Out of Focus: In the Lawful route Denam never even gets the chance to meet her, and she gets a single hidden scene when the Valerian Liberation Front is obliterated, and the Dark Knights capture her.
  • Playing with Fire: Her elemental affinity is Fire and via the Apocrypha sidequest she can become the Oracle of Fire, which unlocks the special Shaman class for her as well as powerful fire-elemental spells. Changing her to the Shaman class in Reborn resets her elemental affinity to Fire if it was changed at any point beforehand.
  • The Remnant: In the Neutral route, after being rescued at Boed, she refuses to join Denam due to him working for the Duke, so she instead rejoins the Front's survivors and went under the guise of pirates, until Denam finds her and recruits her in chapter 4.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Out of all her sisters, she has a special rivalry with Sherri, due to them being on opposite sides of the Valerian civil war.
  • Tough Love: Of the Phoraena sisters, Cerya is the one who takes this approach, refusing to mince words with her sisters whenever she needs to. A particular example involves Sherri's battle in the Banhamoba Shrine, as Cerya just tells her to go back to Heim, so she isn't forced to hurt her.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Mreuva is more old than ugly, but Cerya and all her sisters are knockouts.
  • Weapon Specialization: She comes with a high rank with spear weapons, and some skill with single-handed swords.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's more than willing to stain her hand to achieve her goals. This puts her at odds with the more idealistic member of the front, such as Cistina, Folcurt and Bayin.
  • Weapon Specialization: Defaults to spears on Valkyrie class, and if recruited at Neutral route, comes with a fire-elemental spear and high specialization with spears.

    The Warrior Cistina

Cistina Phoraena (Sisteena Foriner)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cistina_phoraena.png
Voiced by: Maya Okamoto (JP;Sega Saturn), Ayano Hamaguchi (JP;Reborn), Courtenay Taylor (EN;Reborn)

The Bakram vice-leader of the Valeria Liberation Front. She's the second youngest of the Phoraena sisters, daughters of Archiereus Mreuva Phoraena. When Mreuva got ousted and her mother died she left the Order of Philaha alongside Cerya and together they formed the Liberation Front. Stubborn and idealistic, she has trouble coming to terms with betraying her morals to achieve her goals. She can be encountered late in Chapter 1, where she can be rescued by Denam in Rhime. She makes no appearance in the Lawful route but can be recruited in the Chaotic route if Denam rescued her from the pirates that captured her.

  • Badass in Distress: She's a capable warrior but tends to get into trouble and needs to be saved twice in the game: in the first chapter and in the second chapter in the Chaotic route. And she gets Killed Offscreen if you didn't save her.
  • Birds of a Feather: When she agreed to join Denam, she's touched that he shared her idealistic views, goals and same abhorrence of unnecessary bloodshed.
  • Black Magician Girl: While she starts out as an Amazon/Valkyrie with some focus on physical combat, as a Phoraena sister she has access to the unique Shaman class and its unique offensive magic.
  • Blow You Away: Her elemental affinity is Air and via the Apocrypha sidequest she can become the Oracle of Air, which unlocks the special Shaman class for her as well as powerful Air-elemental spells. Changing her to the Shaman class in Reborn resets her elemental affinity to Air if it was changed at any point beforehand.
  • Breast Plate: Her PSP remake portrait seems to have her wear one along with her normal yellow dress.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Appears in chapter one as a near throwaway character... who happens to be a Childhood Friend of Denam.
  • Color-Coded Elements: Her elemental affinity is Air and she has yellow as her Color Motif, which is associated with the air element.
  • Foreshadowing: Only if you let her die in Chapter one, wherein she will call out Cerya's name and Denam says "Where have I heard that name before..." Not that you would want to see this.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Neither she nor Denam are aware that they knew each other as children.
  • Implied Love Interest: The original SNES/PSX version had some Ship Tease between her and Folcurt. It's Downplayed in the PSP/Reborn version, at least on her end.
  • Jack of All Stats: Starting out as a Warrior/Amazon, Cistina can grow into any classes just fine and she's the earliest available Phoraena sister (providing you take the Chaos route in Chapter 2), so regardless of what class route she's taking, she's the most versatile, having the most time to develop her stats. In the remake, however, she's specced as a Valkyrie so she's more of a Magic Knight with a case of Magikarp Power.
  • Killed Offscreen: If not rescued after being captured by the pirates, she's sold off for her bounty and executed offscreen, much to Olivya's horror.
  • Magic Knight: In the PSP/Reborn version, her starting class is a Valkyrie, skilled in both magical and physical combat.
  • Magikarp Power: Since she is a Jack of All Stats and would be the earliest Phoraena sister you get, she has all the time to grow really strong and could outgrow her sisters in strength.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: She can’t be recruited on the Lawful route; thus she cannot fight alongside Vyce, Ozma Ravness, Xapan, Jeunan or Ocionne.
  • Nice Girl: Second to her younger sister Olivya, Cistina is caring to her friends (especially Folcurt), and she abhors unnecessary violence, being a Wide-Eyed Idealist at heart.
  • Number Two: She's the vice-leader of the Liberation Front.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Mreuva is more old than ugly, but Cistina and all her sisters are knockouts.
  • Uncertain Doom: She never appears again in the Lawful route, implying she either got Killed Offscreen, like she is if not rescued in the Chaotic route.
  • Unreliable Illustrator: Her PSP remake artwork features her with a sword, but her actual Weapon Specialization is with spears. However, Valkyries can also specialize in swords as an alternative weapon.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: She may look fine and normal, but you could go out of your way to make her miserable, which includes getting Folcurt killed before he could rescue her or taking the Neutral route and let her see Cerya die. Or not recruiting Sherri and kill her... Or you can just simply just not recruit her in the first place after going through everything to save her, which will have Denam state that her dream was unrealistic even for him. In this case, unlike Folcurt and Bayin that wished you luck, Cistina didn't take it well, stating that she hated Denam for talking down about her dream and never wanted to see him again.
  • Weapon Specialization: In the remake, she's defaulted to the Valkyrie/Rune Fencer class who specializes in spears (although her Warren Report portrait has her wielding a sword).
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite being met near the end of chapter 1, she is not heard of again in the Lawful route is picked. Not even during the scene when Cerya gets killed by the Dark Knights. Could've had an offscreen death with a similar case if you didn't rescue her the second time, despite the pirates that would've captured her was busy gunning down Xapan instead in Lawful route. In Chaotic/Neutral route, it is possible to not even hear of her again if you failed to save Bayin (and considering his situation, it's easy to screw up in saving him), and you were only told about what happened to her if you had Cerya reunite with Olivya: Because you didn't save her from the pirates, she got sold into someone else and was killed.
  • Weapon Specialization: She comes with a high rank with spear weapons.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: She's a righteous and idealistic woman, who doesn't believe the methods justify the means. In Chapter 1 she even expresses outrage when the Walister doesn't sympathize with her cause, as she believes everyone should be fighting as one against tyranny, not realizing each faction has its own issues. In the Chaotic route, she parts way with Cerya due to disagreeing with her methods in leading the Liberation Front. She will join up with a Denam that sympathizes with her idealism but will refuse to do it if he tells her that her idealistic world is unrealistic.

    Sir Folcurt

Folcurt Reeda Lynde (Forcas Lida Rhende)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/folcurt.png
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (JP;Sega Saturn), Takashi Ōhara (JP;Reborn), Ben Diskin (EN;Reborn)

A Bakram member of the Liberation Front that can be found and recruited in the Chaotic route. A former knight disillusioned with Brantyn's rule who joined the Valeria Liberation Front as a result. He seems to be an item together with its vice-leader Cistina. After being rescued by a fugitive Denam in the Chaos route, he offers him a safe route to Rhime through the sea.

  • Badass in Distress: He's first found having been caught by the Walister Resistance Army for scouting and mistaken as one of Denam's men.
  • Defector from Decadence: He does not like Brantyn's ways on running things, so he went to join the Liberation Front. He also ends up defecting from the Liberation Front when he starts to disagree with Cerya's methods.
  • Honor Before Reason: He almost foregoes saving Cistina because he had to pay his debts to Denam first as part of his knight honor, in which Bayin calls him out for. Which is a good thing, because if you agree with Folcurt, Bayin storms off to save Cistina herself and you'll never get to hear them again.
  • Implied Love Interest: The original SNES/PSX version had some Ship Tease between him and Cistina. It's Downplayed in the PSP/Reborn version, at least on her end.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Starts as a Knight and is as chivalrous as ever.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: He can’t be recruited on the Law route; thus he cannot fight alongside Vyce, Ozma, Ravness, Xapan, Jeunan or Ocionne.
  • Uncertain Doom: He never appears in the Lawful route, implying he got killed either by the Walister, the pirates or the Dark Knights.

    The Magus Bayin

Bayin Rosen Orne (Byan Rozen Ohwn)

Voiced by: Yasuo Muramatsu (JP;Sega Saturn), Ikkyu Juku (JP;Reborn), Ian James Corlett (EN;Reborn)

A Bakram member of the Liberation Front that can be found and recruited in the Chaotic route. A talented scholar/wizard that also disliked Brantyn's rule and enlisted to the Valeria Liberation Front. Can be a bit stubborn due to his age, which causes him to have be rescued by Denam when the two meet in Fort Qadriga.

  • Badass in Distress: He's first found surrounded by pirates, ready to kill him. And while he's a poweful mage, he's also a Squishy Mage, so keeping him alive can be difficult.
  • Black Mage: As a Wizard, he specializes in offensive elemental magic.
  • Cool Old Guy: Age 58 and still rocking powerful magic.
  • Defector from Decadence: Along with Folcurt, he's a defector from Brantyn's army. He also ends up defecting from the Liberation Front when he starts to disagree with Cerya's methods.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Bayin is locked with the Earth element in the original version and in the PSP version, he has more mastery in Earth magic. In the Reborn version, this is averted: Bayin's element is randomized, and he can still use charms to change his elemental affinity.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: He can’t be recruited on the Lawful route; thus he cannot fight alongside Vyce, Ozma, Ravness, Xapan, Jeunan or Ocionne.
  • Nintendo Hard: Saving him in Qadriga Fortress, at least in the original version. Unlike Xapan in the Law route, Bayin is much squishier, and his AI is as suicidal as it gets. You can at least lessen this by using the Elemental boost spell since the enemies happen to be all Air Elemental. And if you failed to save him, say goodbye to your chances to save Cistina. The remake made it a little easier because of core gameplay changes, but it's still no walk in the park.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: His portrait has him wearing the classic wizard hat and robe.
  • The Strategist: He's said to be the head strategist of the Liberation Front.
  • Uncertain Doom: He never appears in the Lawful route, implying he got killed either by the pirates or the Dark Knights.
  • Wizard Classic: He has this look, from the Wizard Beard to the wizard hat.

    Captain Ehlrig

Merrik Ehlrig

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ehlrig.png
Voiced by: Yuichi Matsuda (JP)

A Bakram member of the Liberation Front that can be found and recruited in the Neutral route. He escaped the destruction of most of the Front by the Dark Knights due to being at sea, and poses as a pirate captain in order to rebuild the front. He can be recruited alongside Cerya.

  • All There in the Manual: As a semi-generic unit, most of his characterizations comes from his Warren Reports entry.
  • Just Like Robin Hood: Implied. As his "pirate" group only attacks ships belonging to noble or military targets, making it rather obvious they're not just plundering pirates.
  • Late to the Tragedy: He only avoided being killed at Boed because he was away on a mission.
  • The Medic: As a Cleric, most of his spells focus on healing.
  • The Remnant: His "pirate" group is what remains of the Liberation Front after the Dark Knights's attack.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Cleric portrait.
  • Secret Test of Character: His confrontation with Denam as a pirate is merely a front to test Denam's character, since in the Neutral route Cerya has doubts about him. If he passes she and Ehlrig will join, but if not the battle will proceed as normal and Denam never even finds out he was with the Liberation Front.
  • Uncertain Doom: He never appeared in both Lawful and Chaos route, marking him to be one of the casualties of the Dark Knights' attack. In Chaos route, this implies that he is actually present, not away, during the attack at Boed Fortress, further enforced with Cerya's declaration of revenge against the Dark Knights in Phidoch; which implies that Ehlrig didn't survive the Dark Knights' attack there.

The Order of Philaha (Filaha Order)

The Order of Philaha is a religious organization that holds much political sway in Valeria. Though many of its members have went on to join different sides of the conflict, some of them opt to remain neutral until the reappearance of Dorgalua's offspring forces them to take action.

    Abuna Prancet

Prancet Pavel/Morne (Plancy Powell)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/prancet.png
Voiced by: Satoshi Mikami (JP)

The father of Denam and Catiua, an Abuna in the island town of Golyat until the Dark Knights Loslorien assaulted the town and captured him. In reality, his real name is Prancet Morne and he is Exarch Brantyn's younger brother. Before King Dorgalua's disappearance and death, he tasked Prancet with raising his bastard child, Versalia (Catiua), far from the vindictive gaze of his wife Vernotta after his affair was made light.

  • Almost Dead Guy: After enduring Cold-Blooded Torture at the hands of the Dark Knights, they let him go, but he's so mentally and physically injured he can barely hang on even with Olivya's care. The only thing that keeps him alive is wanting to meet his soon again, and once he has his Deathbed Confession, he passes on.
  • Deathbed Confession: On his deathbed, he tells Denam (and the player) the truth about Catiua's heritage.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Played With. When we see him being taken by the Dark Knights in the final CODA chapter, he doesn't panic and stays calm so he won't worry his son.
  • Good Shepherd: He was a well-respected Abuna in both his old life in Heim and at Golyat. Unlike his brother Brantyn, he had no political goals in mind when he got involved with Mannaflora, only caring for the safety of the newly-born Catiua.
  • Secretly Selfish: On his deathbed, Prancet admits that had he revealed Catiua's lineage it could have prevented the war, but he couldn't bring himself to give up the girl who called him father her whole life.

    Sybil Olivya

Olivya Phoraena (Olivia Foriner)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olivya_phoraena.png
Voiced by: Tsumugi Osawa (JP;Sega Saturn), Sumi Shimamoto (JP;Reborn), Madeline Curry (EN;Reborn)

A Bakram Sibyl in the Order of Philaha. She's the youngest of the Phoraena sisters, daughters of Archiereus Mreuva Phoraena. When Mreuva got ousted and her mother died, her sisters abandoned the order, but she remained there as a Sybil. She is encountered early in Chapter 4 at Brigantys and can be recruited in any route.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Her epilogue involves her leaving the Order with her father's blessing to pursue Denam, implying she'll confess her feelings to him. However in a old Q&A Word of God seems to confirm her feelings are one sided.
  • Black Magician Girl: While she starts out as a Cleric with only healing magic, as a Phoraena sister she has access to the unique Shaman class and its unique offensive magic.
  • Childhood Friend: She and Denam were close friends during the time they lived in Heim, due to them being close in age.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: It's implied she has romantic feelings for Denam, which apparently began back when they were kids. Her epilogue even has her father encouraging her to act on her feelings.
  • Daddy's Girl: Unlike her sisters Olivya stayed with her father at the Order and didn't involve herself in the war until Denam came.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: She hit her head when she and Denam nearly drowned and bears a scar on her forehead. It's how Denam is able to remember that they were childhood sweethearts.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: While she remembers it clearly, Denam wasn't even aware that he and Olivya grew up together.
  • Good Shepherd: While she quickly rose in the ranks of the Order thanks partly to her connection to her father, she still remained popular after his disappearance due to her kindness and devotion to the Order's teaching, making her very popular among the congregation and the public.
  • Making a Splash: Her elemental affinity is Water and via the Apocrypha sidequest she can become the Oracle of Water, which unlocks the special Shaman class for her as well as powerful water-elemental spells. Changing her to the Shaman class in Reborn resets her elemental affinity to Water if it was changed at any point beforehand.
  • The Medic: As a Cleric, most of her spells focus on healing, which fits her caring personality.
  • Nice Girl: A genuine sweetheart and Proper Lady, lacking the Hot-Blooded nature of her sisters.
  • Odd Name Out: In the first version of the game, she was the only sister to not have a "S" at the start of her name. In the second version of the game, she is still the only sister to lack a soft consonant at the start of her name.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She didn't get herself involved in the war, to the point she's unaware that her sister Sherri is actually joined Brantyn's side.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: She may be the most gentle-natured of her sisters, but she's not a pushover. Even when Denam is manhandling her in grief she doesn't flinch and calmly talks sense into him.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Despite being a Sybil, her outfit actually has slits at both sides that show off her legs.
  • Token Religious Teammate: The only Phoraena sister that stuck with the religious order while her big sisters all went to non-religious paths.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: A minor version. In the Lawful route, she already knows the location of Mreuva, so she handily reveals it to Denam. In other routes, unless you do not have either Cerya and/or Cistina, Olivya forgets about Mreuva's location, requiring her sisters to reveal Mreuva's location.
  • True Blue Femininity: Also overlapping with Water Is Womanly. She's the kindest, most feminine and delicate of her sisters, focusing on religious activities. And she's drapped with blue robes and possesses the element of water and healing.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Mreuva is more old than ugly, but Olivya and all her sisters are knockouts.
  • Water Is Blue: Her elemental affinity is Water and she has blue as her Color Motif.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Olivya might be the youngest of the Phoraena siblings, but she's definitely the most level-headed, that she never lost faith in religion or her father.

    Archiereus Mreuva

Archiereus Mreuva Phoraena (Moruba Foriner)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mreuva.png
Voiced by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (JP), André Sogliuzzo (EN)

A Bakram from Heim who was once Archiereus of the Order of Philaha in the Kingdom of Valeria. He left Heim after being ousted by Exarch Brantyn, creating a rupture withing his family. He continued to travel the lands spreading the word of Philaha, but went missing at the outbreak of war. Finding him is an early objective for Chapter 4.

  • Big Good: For Chapter 4. As the former Archiereus, he's an immensely popular figure and him joining Denam gives the resistance legitimacy to fight against Brantyn and the Dark Knights after princess Versalia's appearance.
  • Crisis of Faith: After being ousted from the Order by Brantyn he had a crisis of faith that ruptured his family and ended up leaving the order and secluding himself at the Shrine of Ishtar on Banhamuba to try to regain his faith. Olivya claims his crisis was cause by how tied to politics he became.
Olivya: It may seem odd, but as you rise in the ranks of the church, your duties become less of faith and more of politics. Men like Balbatos and Brantyn are such - their power as regent or steward becomes more important than their devotion. I watched as my father dirtied his own hands... full aware of what he did. After Dorgalua passed away, my father lost in a struggle for power with Brantyn, and so lost his rank as Archiereus. But though he could now return to his faith, free from political machinations, he was not pleased. That is when my sisters left. They could not accept that he had changed, that faith and politics are links of a single chain. The teachings of god are a compass needle for the righteous man, a way for all to live in peace and happiness. Throw yourself into the maelstrom that is governance - as long as you follow the teachings, your course will be true. But my father... My father lost his faith. He set out upon the same path as Brantyn before him.
  • Good Shepherd: He is part of the reason the Order of Philaha is so popular in Valeria, as he was a very popular and influential Archiereus for the order during Dorgalua's reign.
  • Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge: He was entrusted with keeping the Apocrypha magic hidden by King Dorgalua. Sherri and the Bakram wanted to kidnap him to acquire the secrets to unlock it. Denam can convince him he's worthy of it, starting the Apocrypha sidequest.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: He's an old and unattractive guy, but has 4 beautiful daughters.

The Bakram-Valerian Kingdom (Bacrum Valeria Country)

Created by Brantyn Morne following the disappearance of King Dorgalua, the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom was established to help the Bakram nobility prosper at the expense of the commons and other races. To neutralize the threat posed by the Kingdom of Galgastan, they forged an alliance with the Holy Lodissian Empire, a move many Valerians found distasteful to say the least.

    In General
  • Animal Motifs: Their coat-of-arms is depicted with Gryphons.
  • Archaeological Arms Race: Late in the game, the Kingdom deploys expedition parties to seek out Precursor magic at Sherri's behest to both bolster the Kingdom's forces and lessen their reliance on the Dark Knights. Their efforts are thwarted once players decide to unlock the game's biggest Bonus Dungeon.
  • Blind Obedience: Similar to their Galgastani counterparts, many knights within the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom refuse to abandon Brantyn even if Catiua, the real heir to the throne, appeals for their surrender.
  • Blue Blood: Out of all the three clans, Bakrams qualify the most due to many of their numbers hailing from the upper class.
  • Broken Pedestal: Some among the Bakram begin to lose faith in Brantyn as more of his incompetence comes to light. It worsens when their former king's offspring is revealed to be alive, with many calling for the Regent to step down.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: While the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom is officially led by a family member of the late queen, it is Brantyn who holds the real power behind the throne.
  • Decapitated Army: Once Brantyn is finally killed, most of the Bakram soldiers surrender to Denam or Catiua. Those loyal to the Regent end up forming the Tigers of Burnham alongside remnants of the Galgastani and Walister who despise the Resistance.
  • Elemental Weapon: In the original game, many of their officers are equipped with rare and powerful weapons not found in shops.
  • Faction Calculus: With backing from the Dark Knights, they are considered the Powerhouse. Without them, they are simply a Balanced faction with a stronger emphasis on magic.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride and an overreliance on the Dark Knights. This causes them to look down and underestimate the other clans much to their own detriment. Distrust is also another issue as growing tensions between them and the Loslorien worsened after their sacking of Rhime.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Mage. Outside of their reliance on the Dark Knights, the Kingdom heavily depends on its mages to make up for their inexperience and lack of numbers. For that purpose, they also have a special detachment dedicated to finding rare and powerful arcana.
  • Home Base: The Royal City of Heim serves as their main headquarters with Phidoch Castle lent to the Dark Knights and Barnicia Castle set aside as a potential back-up base despite its dilapidated condition. Owing to the Kingdom's wealth and prestige, Heim is the largest stronghold within the Valerian Isles.
  • Lensman Arms Race: While it doesn't help them in the long run, the Kingdom makes a desperate attempt to destroy the Resistance by forming a squad full of Fusiliers. This is only shown if the player saves Catiua at Barnicia but lets her die afterwards before invading Heim.
  • Red Is Violent: The Bakram-Valerian Kingdom wears red and serves as one of the main antagonists in Chapter 4.
  • The Remnant: After the Kingdom's downfall, many of Brantyn's loyalists join the Tigers of Burnham to oppose Denam. While unfought in the original game, players have the opportunity to take down their members in certain sidequests.
  • Slobs Versus Snobs: Much of the conflict between the Bakram and the other clans lies in their privileged status especially during King Dorgalua's reign. While the Walister did not suffer as much when he ruled over the isles, the Galgastani were treated like second-class citizens which only drove them closer to radicalized nationalism.

A Bakram who serves as regent to the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom. Following the death of King Dorgalua, he aspired to rule Valeria himself. Though once a mere abuna in the Order of Philaha, he used his growing power in the church to intervene in the power struggle caused by the lack of a successor. He consolidated his political power by courting the favor of the noble and wealthy. Backed by the military might of Lodis to the north, he established the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom and installed himself as regent. The kingdom is headed by the heir of House Eltynaha due to their blood ties with Queen Vernotta, but it is Brantyn who rules.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: He's one of the main antagonists of the game alongside Tartaros Lanselot, as The Leader of the Bakram-Valerian Kingdom. He has little presence in the first 3 chapters, yet his actions are what kickstarted the conflict in Valeria in the first place by hiding Princess Versalia, declaring himself regent and inviting Lodis and the Dark Knights into the continent to help him legitimatize his rule. He is only dealt with at the end of chapter 4 when the Dark Knights abandon him and Denam's forces fight and defeat him and his officers at Heim.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Is often mentioned offhand early in the game a couple times.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Although his defeat ends the war, there is more to be done afterwards.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Or rather, your uncle.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Unlike opposing faction leaders Duke Ronwey and Hierophant Balbatos, Abuna Brantyn is more than capable of defending himself, and wields some of the most powerful spells in the game. Especially in the PSP version where he has more to his arsenal.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Brantyn believes that all he does is for the well-being of Valeria, which would have been outright invaded by Lodis had he not struck a deal with the Loslorien to help them find Dorgalua's tomb.

    The Magus Sherri

Sherri Phoraena (Shelley Foriner)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sherri_phoraena.png
Voiced by: Mami Kingetsu (JP;Sega Saturn), Maria Kawamura (JP;Reborn), Abby Trott (EN;Reborn)

A Bakram who serves as Brantys right-hand woman. She's the second oldest of the Phoraena sisters, daughters of Archiereus Mreuva Phoraena. When her mother died, she lost faith in the Order of Philaha and defected, but instead of joining her sisters with the formation of the Liberation Front, she instead joined Brantyn, her father's enemy. In Chapter 4 she's fought as a boss at Hagia Banhamuba and if she survives she can be recruited shortly after.

  • Ascended Extra: In the original, after being recruited, she's mostly just there and had some small tidbits in the Apocrypha quests. The PSP and Reborn version allows her to have more dialogues when taken into battles against the Bakram Kingdom, with her former colleagues being surprised that she is not dead as they expected, calling her out as a traitor, and Sherri blocking off the accusations with pride. She also provides small tidbits about the Palace of the Dead and Draconic Magic during one such encounters.
  • The Atoner: She breaks down when she's recruited, ashamed of how selfish she's been, and joins Denam's side to try to make up for what she did.
  • Black Magician Girl: She starts out as the Witch class when she's recruited, a class that specializes in offensive magic. As a Phoraena, she also has access to the special Shaman class that also specializes in offensive magic.
  • Death Seeker: Implied to be this on the Balmamusa scene where you recruit her, as she was either going to kill Denam, or get herself killed in that shack.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her elemental affinity is Earth and via the Apocrypha sidequest she can become the Oracle of Earth, which unlocks the special Shaman class for her as well as powerful earth-elemental spells. Changing her to the Shaman class in Reborn resets her elemental affinity to Earth if it was changed at any point beforehand.
  • The Dragon: She's said to be Brantyn's right-hand woman and used her prestige as a Phoraena to help legitimize his rule. Despite this, he's quick to cast her aside once she fails her assignment to capture her father.
  • Yellow Earth, Green Earth: Her elemental affinity is Earth and she has green as her Color Motif.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: She sides with Brantyn because she figured he would win the Valerian civil war.
  • Ironic Echo: During her mission to capture Mreuva, she entrusted LeRozza to slow down Denam. When Denam catches up to her and she realizes LeRozza failed, she states that he was "all breeding and no substance". After the battle, when word of her failure reaches Brantyn, he makes the exact same comment of her.
  • Guide Dang It!: There is no hint that she's hiding in Balmamusa, nor having to go there in bad weather to actually find her. There's also the very specific part of the plot in which she can be recruited.
  • Heel–Face Turn: If spared, she can be found in ruin at Balmamusa, with nowhere to go after Brantyn cast her aside. But Olivya forgives her and with Denam's help convinces her to come home. She breaks down in tears when she realizes how much her family still loves her.
  • I Miss Mom: She was the closest to their mother and grieves her deeply. It's the reason why she loathes her father and decides to work for Brantyn instead, as she blames him for her death.
  • Lady of Black Magic: She's a magus skilled in both magic and politics, and has an elegant feminine demeanor.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Out of all her sisters, she has a special rivalry with Cerya, due to them being on opposite sides of the Valerian civil war.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Mreuva is more old than ugly, but Sherri and all her sisters are knockouts.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of her characterization comes from her Warren Reports entry.

  • Cavalry Betrayal: She begins to panic in the middle of the fight when she realizes the Dark Knights are not coming to her aid.

  • Reused Character Design: She uses the generic female Enchantress portrait.
  • Squishy Mage: Like most magic users, she can dish out damage from a distance, but can't take it.

  • Always Someone Better: He only became aware of his shortcomings as a mage once he meet Sherri, and realized how much more talented she was.
  • Blue Blood: He's from an old noble Bakram family, who served as advisors to the old kings of Barnicia. It was made apparent to him that he only got his position in the army due to his lineage. Sherri explicitly calls him "All breeding, no substance".
  • Just Between You and Me: Upon being killed his final words is to inform Denam that the Bakram are also after Mreuva, apparently for no other reason other than an attempt to taunt him.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Warlock portrait.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: The first thing Sherri does upon learning he died is mock him.
Sherri: I always knew LeRozza was useless. All breeding and no substance, that one.

  • Blue Blood: He's a noble of the Johannsen family, who were close allies to King Dorgalua during his conquest. But despite his status, he enjoys his station as a knight and does not seek to scheme to advance his career.
  • A Father to His Men: He's very benevolent to his men, to the point it's said the garrison he commands is filled with constant applicants. When faced in battle, he even gives a chance to his men flee rather than face the hopeless fight against Denam, but nobody budges, and they all fight to the death alongside him.
  • Honor Before Reason: He's well aware he has no chance against Denam's army, but his honor as a knight still dictates he has to fight to the death to protect his liege.

  • Married to the Job: Due to being a Genocide Survivor, she focused solely on her career, since all of her kin were gone.
  • Optional Boss: Denam can either face her, Vermado or Derain when laying siege to Heim.
  • Reused Character Design: She uses the generic female Beastmaster portrait.
  • Undying Loyalty: Halphas is a Brantyn loyalist due to blaming the Walister and Galgastani for the destruction of Vasque. She gladly gives her life fighting for him, denouncing Catiua as a false princess and taking umbrage at Sherri's betrayal.

  • Bad Boss: Doesn't value the lives of his men, since he's a necromancer and can just raise them back from the dead.
  • Elite Agents Above the Law: He works for the Bakram using necromancy, something that is frowed upon amongst the Bakram due to their close ties to the Order of Philaha, but he gets away with it by being an elite intelligence officer.
  • Mad Scientist: Like Nybeth, he treats necromancy as a science, and also has little morals when it comes to his experiments.
  • Optional Boss: He's only fought if the player decides to investigate Vasque in chapter 4.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Necromancer portrait.
  • Squishy Mage: Like most magic users, he can dish out damage from a distance, but can't take it.

    Cielo the Mercenary

Cielo Segur

A Balboede fusilier encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 4. He's under the employ of the Bakram expedition in Exeter and fights Denam's forces in Vasque.

  • Beleaguered Assistant: He's clearly not thrilled to work for a creepy necromancer like Reymos, being scared of the undead turning on him or that Reymos will eventually just turn him into an undead himself.
  • Lust Object: He lusts after Ocionne, finding her "comely" and asks Reymos if he can "put her to use".
  • Not Me This Time: He's a mercenary who's shameless about his lack of morals, but takes offense when Denam accuses him of being responsible for the state of Vasque, as it's obvious that the village has been destroyed long before Cielo got there.
  • Only in It for the Money: He only got involved in the conflict for the money. His logic being that "there's always coin to be had where Lodis is on the move".
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He lusts after the 15-year-old Occione and asks Reymos if he can "put her to use". Jeunan is openly disgusted by this.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Fusiler portrait.

A Bakram encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 4. She leads the Bakram expedition in Exeter alongside Reymos, her task being to search Draconic Magic in the Palace of The Dead.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of her characterization comes from her Warren Reports entry.
  • Master Poisoner: She's said to be well-versed with toxins and venoms. The original game made this obvious by giving her the unique Hazard skill to both damage and poison units.
  • Optional Boss: She's only fought if the player decides to investigate the Palace of the Dead in chapter 4.
  • Squishy Mage: Like most magic users, she can dish out damage from a distance, but can't take it.

Vepahl Dabran (Vepar Dublan)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vepahl.png

  • Arc Villain: She's the main antagonist for the San Bronsa Ruins dungeon.
  • Light 'em Up: She is a mage who specializes in offensive divine magic. In the original game, she even comes with a special skill that instantly destroys undead units.
  • Light Is Not Good: She discovers this by herself upon reaching the end of the San Bronsa Ruins only to be slain be the angelic beings there. Her final words are a warning of their true nature to Denam.
  • The Remnant: She's a member of the Tigers of Burnham, a group of loyalists to the Bakram-Valerian kingdom even after it fell. She's after the angelic magic of the San Bronsa Ruins so she can use to conquer Valeria for them.
  • Superboss: In both versions she's an Optional Boss that is fought in the Brutal Bonus Level, all that changes is which Brutal Bonus Level she is. In the SNES/PSX version she was found on floor 25th of The Palace of The Dead, while in the PSP/Reborn version she's found in the 3rd and 10th level of the San Bronsa Ruins.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: In the remake, Vepahl has the distinction of being the only character who can use both divine magic and necromancy. From a storyline perspective, this makes sense since her goal is to unearth the divine miracles of San Bronsa by using loyal undead followers as guinea pigs.

The Dynast-King's Court

Consists of select figures who lived during King Dorgalua's reign.

    King Dorgalua

King Dorgalua Oberyth Valeria (King Dolgare Overis)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dorgalua_oberyth_valeria.png
Voiced by: Keythe Farley (EN)

A Bakram who once ruled the Kingdom of Valeria. He united the scattered dominions of Valeria through his great vision and public favor. Upon becoming king, he sought to end hostilities between the various factions. He disappeared suddenly and left no successor, and war soon broke out in Valeria. In truth, he attempted to bring his family back to life by using a Chaos Gate but became trapped there and turned into an Ogre. He's freed by the remnants of the Lodissian Dark Knights and becomes the game's Final Boss.

  • The Ace: He was supposedly an amazing warrior, commander, ruler and diplomat. He is equally remembered as a great conqueror and as a wise king.
  • A God Am I: Given his time in the abyss and the newfound powers it brought him; he seems himself as a deity.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Became king by uniting the Valerian Isles not just through martial prowess but sheer charisma. He shows it during the final boss fight with his ogre form.
  • Cheating with the Milkman: He cheated on his queen with her favorite handmaiden, which inadvertently ended up triggering a series of events that would lead to him getting trapped in the Underworld and cause a Succession Crisis in Valeria.
  • The Conqueror: He was the first man who managed to conquer all of Valerian Isles under a single banner, in what today is known as "Dorgalua's Great War".
  • Despair Event Horizon: The Surprisingly Sudden Death of Mannaflora & Versalia followed by prince Oberyth and Vernotta sent him into despair, to the point he was lured to the Chaos Gates for an Orphean Rescue.
  • Final Boss: He's corrupted form is the final enemy faced in the main story.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: He founded the unified Kingdom of Valeria, by conquering all of the Valerian isles, usurping the thrones of the previous kingdoms and uniting their clans.
  • The Good King: He's regarded as a great and fair ruler, who ruled the realm justly. His rule is remembered as a Golden Age for the Valerian isles.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: An in-universe example, and this is when disregarding his ultimate fate. While Dorgalua is constantly touted for his great deeds and fairness, the cracks show when you really look. For instance, his reign gave the Bakram prestige and influence over the other clans, and the Galgastani (who comprised some 70% of the population after the unification war) were mistreated even by the Walister, breeding unchecked racial tensions that escalated after his death into ultra-nationalism and full-on ethnic cleansing. In his personal life he failed to stay faithful to his wife, courting her favorite handmaiden which deprived her of the only other person she was close to in a cutthroat environment; more importantly, it gave the ambitious Brantyn a means to secure his own power while deposing the more selfless Mreuva and (it’s speculated) arrange for the death of Dorgalua’s son. The subsequent death of his wife after the tragedy saw the Dynast-King fall into his worse traits and abandon morality to regain what he coveted most, and from there his fate would be sealed.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: He tries to embrace the power of the Dark after he lost his wife and his son. It goes awry and he becomes an Ogre.
  • Mirror Boss: He creates replicas of deployed party members at the start of the fight in the PSP version.
  • One-Winged Angel: Becomes a colossal, winged demon after felling his smaller, humanoid Ogre form.
  • Orphean Rescue: In his grief following the loss of his family, he used the Chaos Gate under the Hanging Gardens attempting to get them all back, even Catiua. However, he didn't expect Catiua to be alive, especially as he was supposed to use her as the key to return to the mortal realm.
  • Posthumous Character: Died before the events of the game. Later turned out to be false, he was exploring the underworld in order to find a way to retrieve his family.
  • Rags to Royalty: Was once a commoner who managed to become the King of Valeria.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He was regarded as The Good King who used Realpolitik to keep the peace in the realm. Even Brantyn admits it:
Brantyn: He was a good king, true. Always interceding on behalf of peace. He coaxed the unwilling, and punished those who remained incorrigible. A harmony negotiated by carrot and stick applied in equal measure.
  • The Usurper: He conquered and usurped the five kingdoms that made up the Valerian Isles (Barnicia, Phidoch, Almorica, Coritanae, and Brigantys) and united them all into a single unified Kingdom of Valeria.
  • Walking Spoiler: The truth about his character is this.
  • Was Once a Man: He was trapped in the Underworld for so long that he became an Ogre. His description says he has forgotten much of his human life, and now only bears hatred and envy for the living.

    Queen Vernotta

Queen Vernotta Eltynaha Oberyth (Queen Bernata Eltenaja Overis)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vernotta.png
Voiced by: Sayuri Sadaoka (JP), Abby Trott (EN)

A Bakram who was queen consort to the Dynast-King. She was born into the noble House Eltynaha, and the King took her as his queen upon uniting Valeria under his rule. After learning her handmaiden Mannaflora was with child by the King, Vernotta had her exiled. She later bore the King a son, but the child perished in an accident. The distraught Queen was beset by illness and passed away at the tender age of 30.

  • Arranged Marriage: She married Dorgalua in an arranged marriage to unite the Bakram and "elevate" him from his commoner status.
  • Blue Blood: She's a noble from the Eltynaha family, a supposedly influential noble house among the Bakram, to the point that after Dorgalua's death they were the default rulers of Valeria, though Brantyn uses them as puppets as their regent.
  • Death by Despair: Considered by many to have given up on living after the death of her baby son, as she was son beset by a sudden illness and died just as suddenly at the young age of 30.
  • Posthumous Character: She died before the events of the game, but still shows up in a flashback.
  • Woman Scorned: She was livid upon finding out her favorite handmaiden not only slept with her husband, but got pregnant with his bastard, to the point she considered killing her, but had her exiled instead.

    Prince Oberyth

Prince Oberyth (Prince Overis)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mannaflora.png
Voiced by: Haruka Shibuya (JP)

A Bakram who was Queen Versalia's trusted handmaiden, but caught the eye of King Dorgalua and began an affair with him. She was forced to flee after incurring the wrath of the queen and died after giving birth to Catiua.

  • Death by Childbirth: She dies upon giving birth to Versalia/Catiua. The official story is that they both died, but Brantyn managed to keep the bastard child a secret.
  • The Mistress: She had a long secret affair with her liege-lord, King Dorgalua.
  • Posthumous Character: She died before the events of the game, but still shows up in a flashback.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Mannaflora appears in only a single scene and her only significant contribution to the story is her affair with Dorgalua. Nonetheless, giving birth to Catiua, Dorgalua's only surviving heir after the death of the prince dramatically influences Valeria's state of affairs.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her affair with the king ended up triggering events that would lead to a Succession Crisis in Valeria.
