The Normally Overcome Target Class (also called NOT) is one of the two curriculum within Death Weapon Meister Academy. This system of the Academy takes in students incapable of fighting Monsters and Evil Humans and trains them, either to ensure they aren’t a danger to the outside world or for them to become good enough to be promoted to the EAT curriculum. The N.O.T. Class is a curriculum for non-combatants, though there are some capable of fighting or have learned to fight. Ninety percent of the students in the DWMA make up and follow the NOT curriculum. In Soul Eater: Troubled Souls, all NOT students are Zero-Stars to differentiate them from the EAT students and their ranking system. They are usually defined as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors.

Sidney “Sid” Barett is the main overseer of the NOT cirrculum.

Original Characters

The Vanderbilts

     Tropes applying to all three
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The Vanderbilts become one of the many NOT students possessed by Shaula’s poison.
  • Freudian Trio:
    • Ego: Vincent. He’s The Kirk for mediating any instance of in-fighting between other two. Must be quite a lot.
    • Superego: Autumn. She’s The Spock for acting rationally and preferring to do things that sound worthwhile.
    • Id: Damon. He’s The McCoy for being someone who tends to act on emotion and good will.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: They’re not villains (we think), but it’s clear they’re up to something that doesn’t have the goals of the Academy in mind.
  • Made of Iron: They got ran over by a van going at high speeds. Other than some minor dizziness, a headache, and a small flesh wound in Vincent’s case, they got right back up to help complete the mission.
  • The Mole: Heavily implied. Lord Death knows, and Akane and Clay are assigned to keep an eye on them.
  • Nice Mean And In Between
    • Nice: Damon, optimistic and respectful
    • Mean: Autumn, realistic and calmly aggressive
    • In-Between: Vincent, who is more than willing to take action but is a nice guy overall
  • Power Trio: They work as a unit opposed to a meister-weapon trio.
  • Sibling Team: Vincent is the Meister while Autumn and Damon are the Demon Weapons. That said, they’ve yet to do the meister-weapon combination and seem to function better as individuals working together.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: They apparently wear color contacts to hide these for some reason.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In Chapter 12, the Vanderbilts team up with Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme. This trope doesn’t apply to the Damon, Tsugumi, and Meme. It does to Vincent, Autumn, and Anya (the first two especially) who aren’t keen to the idea of doing a dog-catching mission.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Damon and Vincent are guys, while Autumn is the sole chick.

    Vincent Vanderbilt
17-year-old NOT student. He’s the Meister.
  • Alliterative Name: Vincent Vanderbilt.
  • A World Half Full: In contrast to Damon and Autumn, Vincent acknowledges both sides of the spectrum. He understands the world is full of conflict and many wrongs, but Vincent wants to make the world better by preserving life and attempting to right said wrongs.
  • Blood Knight: He expresses the desire to experience the DWMA’s chaotic and over-the-top adventures. So, he can be considered one because this means he loves the thrill of danger and combat. Heck, he bursts out into a Slasher Smile when he finds out their targets in Chapter 12 ran him over and have to turn back.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He actually appeared in Chapter 9 as the waiter serving Maka, Soul, Caius, and Claudia in Deathbucks Café before he was named.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Whenever he’s not doing a Slasher Smile, he’s doing this.
  • Covert Pervert:
Damon: I didn't know you wore blue and white-striped panties, Anya.
    Vincent: (blushes faintly) Striped?
  • General Failure: His inner monologue, sneer, and glare in Chapter 31 suggests he thinks Lord Death is this and dreads the day Death the Kid will take his place.
  • Nature Lover: Why else would he save a caterpillar trying to weave a cocoon in an importune place?
  • Not in the Face!: A damn Running Gag. Vincent gives hit in the face a lot.
    Vincent: OW, MY FACE!
  • Slasher Smile: Liberally.
  • Technicolor Eyes: His color contacts give him wisteria, a shade of purple, eyes.
  • Use Your Head: Not his own, but in Chapter 12, Vincent repeatedly slams the head of the getaway vehicle’s driver on the horn to warn cars ahead. It’s a wonder how the poor poacher didn’t suffer a concussion.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: When the NOT girls tell the Vanderbilts they stopped Shaula and the Traitors, Vincent almost says this word-for-word until Damon disapprovingly throws his paddleball him to stop him.

    Autumn Vanderbilt
17-year-old NOT student. She’s a currently unknown Demon Weapon and the sister of Damon and Vincent.
  • Aloof Ally: Autumn’s general temperament and demeanor gives her vibes of this.
  • Catchphrase: Quite fond of saying “Pointless.”
  • Children Are Innocent: Believes this.
  • The Comically Serious: She swatted a fly buzzing around with a straight face. This happened after the topic of flies being on the walls hearing their conversation was brought up. Such was her justification.
  • The Cynic/The Pessimist: Autumn is a negative person. She believes the world is a factory of misery where there is always trouble and strife. As such, she has a tendency to point out the negative of things and shoot down positive ideas and actions.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She is Marcellus’s only competition in this regard.
  • Foil: To Damon. They’re brother and sister but represent the ends of the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism.
  • Friend to All Children: Despite her cynicism she has a soft spot for kids, even volunteering at Mifune's daycare.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Nowhere near girly in personality though.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While her true alignment is in contention, Autumn still remains one of the iciest characters at the DWMA. Especially to Tsugumi who often gets intimidated by her and needs Anya to get her to ease up.
  • Hard Head: Her head got slammed into a rearview mirror, breaking the entire thing off as well as completely shattering the glass. She’s back in the game after a few seconds of rest.
  • Hidden Depths: She loves children and works part-time at Mifune's daycare.
  • I Am Not Pretty: A child named Tabitha calls Autumn pretty and nice. Autumn completely disagrees.
  • Modesty Shorts: Stated that she wears these to prevent wardrobe malfunctions with her skirt.
  • Pet the Dog: Her occasional playfulness with her brothers are clues that she fundamentally isn’t a bad person.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Holds a scathing worldview.
"This isn't a fairytale. Not all endings are happy."
  • Speech Impediment: When she first appeared in Chapter 12, Autumn has a line that degenerates into a lisp. It is explained that she recently got a tongue piercing, and it gets her every now and then. It’s gone in future dialogue, indicating her tongue has healed.
  • Stunned Silence: She is completely floored when she learns Tsugumi, Meme, and Anya put an end to Shaula’s assault, with some assistance, incapable of saying a single word because she is that much disbelief.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Not evil (maybe), but Autumn has the least pleasant disposition, is more prone to speaking her mind, is more serious, and more apt to declarations of murderous intent.

    Damon Vanderbilt
17-year-old NOT student. He’s a currently unknown Demon Weapon.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He’s got an interesting thought pattern.
  • Foil: To Autumn. They’re brother and sister but represent the ends of the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism.
  • Fun Personified: Damon’s a pretty lively one in every scene he’s in. Not even his moody sister or ambivert of a brother can stop him from enjoying himself and bouncing off everyone around them.
  • Genki Guy: One time, he’s shown skipping in an almost Nayumi-like manner.
  • Gullible Lemmings: Non-villainous example played for comedy. Damon was completely right in calling Spirit out on how misleading the Male Role Models club was. However, Spirit manages to sway him into staying and keeping his mouth shut by appealing to his optimistic personality.
  • The Idealist: Damon is a relentless optimist, always ready to point out the good in a situation and make the most out of something.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Subverted. This isn’t his natural eye color, thanks to navy blue color contacts, but Damon does have the innocent part down.
  • Large Ham: Befitting his energetic personality.
Damon: Yeah! We're going to make the best dog-catching team ever! We're going to do our best, and we're going to accomplish this mission! Cuz we're just that awesome! To Dead Air Road!
Damon: (with grand sweeping motions of his hands) 'Beware, foolish evildoers! Even the lower echelons of the DWMA can smite thee!'
  • Nice Guy: Goes with being an optimist. Damon cares a great deal for the people around him, and just wants to get along with everybody. He also tends to keep his brother and sister in line when they are acting too out-of-line so that nothing out-of-hand is said or done.
  • Squee: His reaction to the Tsugumi, Anya, and Meme’s announcement of Shaula’s defeat at their hands is one akin to a mentor proud of their student’s progression, albeit to an energized degree.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist

Canon Characters

The NOT! Girls

    Tropes applying to them
Tsugumi Harudori, Meme Tatane, and Anya Hepburn are a trio of 14-year-old girls. The latter two are Meister candidates for Tsugumi the Demon Halberd. Eventually, three develop a fighting style that revolves around the two Meisters wielding one Weapon so that they couldn’t be broken up. Tsugumi Harudori is an average girl form Japan who grows more confident. Meme Tatane is a space case with a tendency to forget even the most memorable of details, but was actually once Shaula Gorgon’s best Traitor. Anya Hepburn is high-class and somewhat snobby lady, because she is Princess Anastasia Ygnling of the royal House Ygnling.
  • Almighty Janitor: To the surprise of many, these three 14-year-old girls from the NOT curriculum held their own against Shaula of the Gorgons.
  • Arch-Enemy: Because Shaula lives after her final attack, these three make a pact to put an end to her once and for all, cementing them as this to Shaula.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Triple Soul Resonance: Spring Bird Attack is so powerful that it can leave a giant, gaping hole in a building from front to back, almost completely disintegrating a large scorpion, and leave Shaula Gorgon on the brink of death, all while keeping Meme and Anya completely safe until the attack runs its course.
  • Action Girl: Despite being NOT students, Meme and Anya grow into this role.
  • Limit Break: Triple Soul Resonance: Spring Bird Attack.
  • Lovely Angels: Meme and Anya become this trope by the time they fight Shaula. The two use Tsugumi in virtually perfect synchronization, combining Anya’s grace with Meme’s strength. They know when and where to let the other take the lead and whose skills are better in a situation.

     Tsugumi Harudori

     Anya Hepburn
  • Deadpan Snarker: Anya is a downplayed example. While she has the sharpest tongue of the three girls, she nonetheless remains relatively nice to those who treat her similarly.
  • Lady of War: Befitting a princess, Anya attacks with nothing but precision, poise, and grace.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Gives one in Chapter 12.
Poacher: Oh wow. What good is a weapon without a cutting edge?
Anya: Plenty. (strikes him right across the mouth)

    Meme Tatane
  • Super-Strength: Meme is physically strong enough to stunt a large, summoned scorpion with her blows. The act leaves Anya in awe, which Meme is embarrassed about.
