Human Characters

Protagonists and Rival

    Viol & Keksandra

Viol
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kekky_sandal.png
Keksandra
The protagonists of the game. Viol (male) is down-to-earth and competitive, while Keksandra (female)... isn't. The character you don't pick will become your secondary rival throughout the game.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Keksandra somehow finds herself at the end of the Victory Road despite not having all eight badges.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The name Viol in French translates to rape.note
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Keksandra, as the rival. She speaks almost entirely in memes, doesn't really care about her journey, and seems very detached from reality.
  • Expy: Viol and Keksandra are based off of 4chan-tans for /vp/ and [s4s].
  • Hat of Flight: Keksandra flies with her helicopter beanie in the end credits slide.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Part of Keksandra's design.
  • Nice Guy: Both of them are relatively friendly people, even the competitive Viol.
  • Only Sane Man: Viol is one of the few characters who acts normal and isn’t a complete idiot, although this is mostly downplayed as he doesn’t seem particularly fazed by the weirdness of Fochan either.
  • Signature Headgear: Viol sports a stylish baseball cap, while Keksandra wears a more silly hat with a propeller on top.
  • Signature Mon: As rivals and aside from their starters, Keksandra's is Flowre and Viol's is Smoxilon.
  • Spirited Competitor: Viol. He even quotes Smogon from time to time.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When you encounter Viol in the Grindhaus Ranch, he notes that he's happy to go to Lake Virgin anymore. He quickly realizes how that could be interpreted and tries to correct himself.

    Edgie
Your primary rival. Edgie is a parody of edgelord characters, and mostly cares about being powerful.

Edgie

Pokémon Professor

    Professor Stump
The Pokémon Professor native to the Fochun region.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_3_269.jpg
"I'M THE TRASHMAN!!!!!!!"

  • Expy: To Frank Reynolds of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Stump shares his looks, his lab theme is the theme song to IASIP, and his pre-fight dialogue is also from the show.
Stump: I'm a wild animal, I'M THE TRASHMAN!
  • Handicapped Badass: In spite of his leg stump and an extent of eyesight problem, he's able to give a challenging battle to the protagonist.
  • Hand Wave: He excuses the need to ask your gender as being "fuckin' blind".
  • Hidden Depths: He seems like a crusty old man. But he's an accomplished trainer, and genuinely enjoys seeing you grow to become an impressive trainer yourself.
  • Meaningful Name: "Stump", as in not only his pegleg, but the rooted remains of a chopped-down tree, tying in to the Theme Naming of other Pokémon professors.
  • Signature Mon: Wantnaut, fitting the Trashman.
  • Secret-Keeper: Specifically, he knows that your mother is the champion of the Fochun region.

Fochun Gym Leaders

    Brock
Gadech City Gym Leader—The Rock-Solid Pokémon Trainer!

The same Gym Leader from the original game. You can skip him, but he will not take kindly to that decision.

  • Berserk Button: He does not like to be skipped over. If you do, he will double down with a team of six with levels comparable to the last Gym Leader's.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Just like in the Kanto games, he specializes in Rock-types.
  • Not His Sledinvoked: When you speak to him after your battle with him, he'll mention that you'll need to fight Tumblrita next, and not Misty.
  • Sequence Breaking: It is possible to skip Brock's gym, but doing so will have him change his team as payback.
  • Signature Mon: Chompest, regardless of when you fight him.
  • Years Too Early: Like in Fire Red, there is a trainer that tells you that you're light years away from beating Brock, only that it can be taken in a literal manner; there is a teleporter that brings you light years into spece, where Brock resides on some meteor.

    Tumblrita
Actuvit City Gym Leader—The warrior of social justice!

  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Her Sjwhale is at a lower level than it can be obtained at.
  • Expy: Tumblrita looks similar to Misty, with the only different being having highlights at the end of her hair, no ponytail and wearing a different type of shorts.
    • She’s also similar to Whitney temperament-wise, both being Sore Losers who throw tantrums after being beaten.
  • Making a Splash: Like her original counterpart, she uses Water-type Pokémon. Her sole exception is her Caroline, which is likely used because the species are exclusively female.
  • Official Couple: With Polk, as revealed the next time you meet her in the Inawoods Lodge.
  • Opposites Attract: It's weird that a feminist and a neo-Nazi are in a romantic relationship, don't ya think? Well that's her and Polk's relationship in a nutshell.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only Gym Leader who is female.
  • Sore Loser: Similar to Whitney, she does not take losing well, and you will need to talk to her to get your badge.
  • Signature Mon: Sjwhale.
  • Straw Feminist: She's based on the stereotypical Tumblr feminist, who constantly accuses anyone who even looks at her of being a rapist.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Averted. When she accuses you of staring at her "Fishnism", while it may sound like she accuses you of staring at something else, turns out she actually has a Pokémon called Fishnism.

    Guy
Triport City Gym Leader—d035n'7 f0r61v3, d035n'7 f0r637 Translation:

    Snoop
Animango City Gym Leader—The sky-high Pokémon Trainer!

    Freddie
Beehive City Gym Leader—The killer Queen!

    Kanye
Esfores City Gym Leader—le dying ebola man

    Polk
Outcast Island Gym Leader—The jet-fueled hothead!

  • Angry White Man: A hot-headed, white Neo-Nazi.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: In his rematch, he has his Fire-type Finasoven, and Water-type Florigrace (which he uses because Tumblrita told him to). His third Pokémon is the Water- and Fire-type Gynuke.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: During his Nazi rally, he claims that Jews are aliens, and are promotion relations between black people and white people, so they can make gray people.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was supposedly kicked out of his hometown by Tumblrita.
  • Graceful Loser: He gives the player no qualms after they defeat him in a battle, and hands them the Aryan Badge without complaint.
  • Noble Bigot with a Badge: Literally. He'll still give you a Badge after you beat him, even if you aren't Aryan.
  • Official Couple: Having a Florigrace as adviced by his GF implies that she has to be a Water- or Grass-type trainer. Your next encounter with him in Innawoods Lodge confirms that he is with Tumblrita.
  • Opposites Attract: It's weird that a feminist and a neo-Nazi are in a romantic relationship, don't ya think? Well that's his and Tumblrita's relationship in a nutshell.
  • Pet the Dog: He uses a Florigrace (a Water/Grass type) in his Gym, because his girlfriend has been encouraging him to accept other ethnic groups.
  • Playing with Fire: Specializes in Fire-types.
  • Rescue Arc: To fight Polk, you will need to free the Jews that he captured in his gym.
  • Signature Mon: Finasoven.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: His ace Pokemon is Finasoven which is based on a Nazi oven, enough said.

    Last Gym Leader (SPOILERS!)
Vitlya City Gym Leader

Darude himself. He is responsible for the Gym Leader Battle theme, which is his famous Sandstorm. Like Giovanni, he appears after fighting the previous Gym Leaders.

Elite Four and Champion

    Bendova
The first member of the Fochun League Elite Four.

    Ginosaji
The second member of the Fochun League Elite Four, based on the titular killer from The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon.
  • Green Thumb: In both battles, Ginosaji has one or two Grass-type Pokémon. Ginosaji initially uses Sprucifix and Phantash, the latter of which is a former Grass-type. In his rematch, he keeps Sprucifix, but drops Phantash for Dedwheat.
  • The Quiet One: Doesnt say a whole lot, preferring to just creepily glare at you.
  • Signature Mon: Spookzilla.
  • Soul Power: Is a Ghost-type specialist.

    Tyrone
The third member of the Fochun League Elite Four, based on Big Man Tyrone.

    Saxton Hale
The final member of the Fochun League Elite Four, based on Saxton Hale from Team Fortress 2.

    Champion (SPOILERS)

Your Mom

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/momsugi.png
Your mother. After you battle any trainer or wild Pokémon, you can go to her to heal off any damage your Pokémon may received. However, after you win against the Elite Four, your mom will challenge you as the Champion of the Fochun Region.

Team Karma

    General

  • Harmless Villain: Hardly anyone in Fochun seem to take them seriously.
  • Infraction Distraction: Their true purpose is to be this for Neo Team Karma, distracting the protagonist with generically evil crimes while Neo Team Karma locates and captures Clovenix.
  • Mooks: Par for the course with the grunts.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Gender inverted. The male grunts wear red-orange, while the female ones wear blue.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Most of the Karma grunts aren't interested in their job, saying that they're only in it to get paid.
  • Would Hurt a Child: A pair of Karma grunts throw the player character and Edgie off the Ruse Cruise when they're discovered after their battle.

    Leon

  • Animal Motifs: Serpents. One's on his coat and all his Pokemon are in the Dragon egg group.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Most of Team Karma's higher-ups don't like him too much due to his incompetence. In fact, a Neo Team Karma Grunt states she's glad she's higher ranking than him and thus doesn't have to take orders from him.
  • General Failure: Despite being an Admin, he's by far the dumbest member of Team Karma. Case in point, he takes a mission to scout out the Gadech City Museum and utterly botches it by trying to steal a Linux device; to make this even worse, Linux is open-source, meaning he tried to steal something he could get online for free, something the museum workers Lampshade.
  • Signature Mon: Cannonance.
  • Snake Talk: Some of his dialogue has shades of this.

    Lil' Bro/Reggie

  • Adorably Precocious Child: A villanous example in that, he's skilled enough to be an admin of a criminal organization despite being a little boy. Despite this, his still clearly a kid; the first time the player beats him, he bursts into tears. In his second fight he also admits that he joined for a rather childish reason: he wanted to be strong like his older brother.
  • Big Brother Worship: He joined Team Karma in a misguided attempt of being as strong as his brother.
  • Enfant Terrible: A young child who happens to be a Team Karma admin. Subverted in that he's not truly malicious, he just wanted to get stronger. He undergoes a Heel–Face Turn near the end of the main story.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After you beat him on the Ruse Cruise, he realizes that joining Team Karma didn't make him stronger; rather, it made people fear him. In the post-game, he runs a gym with his brother Nomel.
  • Long-Lost Relative: He's Nomel's younger brother.
  • Not Allowed to Grow Up: He specializes in Pokémon who don't evolve.
  • Signature Mon: His Baloofang, which was designed by his real-life counterpart.

    Boss (SPOILERS)

Kymmi

The leader of Team Karma. You first meet her early in the game on the Useless Bridge and the Pokémon Fan Club.

  • Battle in the Rain: Her Sadfish summons rain thanks to its Drizzle ability, and she takes advantage of it, such as by teaching her Pokémon Thunder, which always hits in the rain.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Turns out she was being controlled by Vyglass via the Odd Dildo the whole time.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: How the battle between her and you is initiated when you meet her for the second time; after the battle, she drops the Odd Dildo item.
  • Decoy Leader: She's this to Vyglass.
  • Forced into Evil: She was under Vyglass's control thanks to the Odd Dildo.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After the main story, she assists you with defeating her husband Vyglass.
  • Making a Splash: While she doesn't specialize in Water-types, she does use the rain summoned by her Sadfish to her advantage.
  • Shout-Out: Kymmi is based on Know Your Meme's KYM-tan. Her name also comes from the initials of Know Your Meme. Given Vylgass created her by basing Fochun off 4-chan, it's more than a coincidence.
  • Signature Mon: The Knogoat line.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only Team Karma higher-up who's female.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her without spoiling two of the game's biggest plot points.

    Neo Team Karma (SPOILERS)

The true Team Karma, consisting of only the most competent grunts.

    Karma Shadow Council (SPOILERS)

The leading Admins of (Neo) Team Karma, ranking only below Vyglass.

  • Boss Bonanza: Five out of six of them are fought during the finale atop Mt. Clover, with no other Mooks or mini-bosses in-between.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Subverted. They only specialize in Pokémon that excel in a certain stat (for example, the one in Telekino City only uses Pokémon with high HP); however, their teams are otherwise quite varied, and they are widely considered to be the toughest trainers in the game.
  • Omniscient Council of Vagueness: With a title like "Shadow Council", did you really expect anything else?
  • Sophisticated as Hell: After his defeat, the final member you fight before Vyglass gives a short but eloquent speech about how your efforts to stop Team Karma "are the final death throes of this fabricated reality, like one last effort before the lights go out"... only to end it with "seeya fag".

    True Boss (SPOILERS)

Vyglass

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_1_211.jpg
The Mech
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_2_025.jpg
The creator of the world Himself.

The true leader of Team Karma, Kymmi's husband, and the creator of Fochun. He seeks to reunite with Clovenix to reshape the region back into his own image.

  • A God Am I: Has a bit of a God complex. Somewhat justified, given that he helped shape the world of Fochun with Clovenix.
  • Big Bad: His desire to destroy and then re-create Fochun is the true driving force behind the plot.
  • Contractual Boss Immunity: His mech's signature ability is Artificial, which protects him from all status conditions.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Was just a bitter kid who retreated to 4-chan and its memes after he was denied a starter Pokémon when he was the protagonist's age because he wasn't mature enough. Now he's the co-creator of Fochun and leader of a villainous group who seeks to recreate it.
  • Heel Realization: After you beat him in the void, he comes to realize how much of an asshole he's been to those who care about him, including his wife and Clovenix. He decides to head back to his own world to face reality, asking the player to take care of Clovenix and Kymmi.
  • Humongous Mecha: He rides in one to try and defeat you as the first phase of the final fight. Noticeable as you actually fight the mech itself rather than Pokemon it uses.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Rather than arbitarily accept your invitation to a battle, Vyglass first tries to kill you with a Humongous Mecha. He also uses a Master Ball on Clovenix (its exact intended purpose, as he says), thus avoiding the possibility of losing control over it.
  • Non-Standard Game Over: Losing to him in the Void will result in him having Clovenix obliterate you. Upon doing so, the game resets.
  • Olympus Mons: One of the very few trainers to use a Legendary in their team.
  • Pure Is Not Good: He's a purity freak who wants to destroy his own region because he views it as degenerate.
  • Reality Warper: Not him, but his Clovenix, who he used to create the region of Fochun.
  • Signature Mon: His Clovenix, who was originally his imaginary friend until his memes made it come to life.
  • Shout-Out: His name is a corruption of Vaglass, the name of the antagonists from Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters.
  • Start of Darkness: Hailed from another world similar to other Pokémon worlds, but wasn't considered mature enough to be a trainer and get a starter. Bitter, he went on 4-chan, who only made him feel worse about his world, and his memes eventually allowed his imaginary friend Clovenix become real and a legendary Reality Warper Pokémon. Now he's the leader of a dangerous villainous organization who seeks to rewrite the world out of disgust for the world he's made.
  • Villain Ball: While he mostly avoids this, his attempt to control Kymmi through the Odd Dildo falls under this: not only does it end up with the player discovering said dildo and forcing Neo Team Karma to directly confront them, but Kymmi was actually totally fine with Vyglass's plans until she realized he was controlling her in the squickiest way possible, resulting in her Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal.
  • Villain Has a Point: Seeks to recreate the world because the "values" it holds are a mockery to him, and he can't even see half the Pokémon as "Pokémon", only monstrosities.
  • Walking Spoiler: He's impossible to talk about without spoiling the postgame.

Ebin Gym Leaders

    Bavi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bavi_from_pokemon_clover_by_dadonyordel_ddyykc3_fullview.png
The Gym Leader of Dubs Island. Believes that birds are important, and has spread her gospel across Fochun.

    Coldsteel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_194.jpg
Nothing personal kid....

The Gym Leader of Trips Island, who has built his gym atop Devil's Peak. He's also Edgie's father.

  • Archnemesis Dad: To Edgie. He actually invoked this trope to help motivate Edgie to be a better trainer.
  • Casting a Shadow: Is officially a Steel-type specialist.
  • Darker and Edgier: Parodied. His gym is built on a perpetually stormy mountain that rains blood, is full of undead skeletal trainers and metal spikes, and has a heavy metal background track, while he himslef is covered in tatoos, smokes, and wields a Katana. Also subverted, as the edginess is just an act to make his son a better trainer, and he's actually really nice.
  • Expy: Of Coldsteel, the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog fan character. He even teleports behind you right before your battle, and says the original Coldsteel's signature line ("Nothing personnel, kid") after his defeat.
  • Signature Mon: His Grimdak, quite fittingly.
  • So Proud of You: After his son Edgie defeats him, he drops the edgy act and says this to Edgie.
  • Stealth Pun: Has a Glassannon, which is Ice/Steel (cold steel, if you will).

    Broly
Telekino City Gym Leader—His power is maximum!

Literally Broly from Dragon Ball. He specializes in the Dragon type.

  • Crippling Overspecialization: His Pokémon have some of the highest Attack stats among non-legendaries, but they are also riddled with weaknesses. Aside from a shared weakness to Ice-type moves, Mantrake is pitifully slow, Draconius falls prey to Fighting-types, and Frutagon (aside from being 4x weak to Ice) loses its resistance to Fire and gains even more weaknesses.
  • Rule of Three: Only allows for the use of three Pokémon.
  • Signature Mon: Frutagon.
  • SNK Boss: He bans the use of Fairy-types and only allows the player to use a team of three.

    Darkholme

    Nomel

Other Characters

    Carlito
The Tex-Mex hero who is helping his fellow people cross the border to Fochun.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carlitosugi.png

    Terry
Terry is a very religious programmer and a recurring side-character. You first meet him in the Gadech Museum after defeating Team Karma, and you encounter him multiple times throughout your journey.

    Chris-Chan
Christian Weston Chandler, the creator of the infamous web comic Sonichu, amongst other things. He's a virgin with rage that's on a Love Quest for a sweetheart he can build from the ground up to bear his foretold daughter, Crystal, and no 4-cent garbage troll is going stop him. Fights you before you encounter Demiwaifu.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He uses three Ground-types (Mudslacks, Mennopaws and Potarded).
  • Mythology Gag: His battle theme is a version of "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler; given that this is Chris we're talking about, it's more likely that his theme is a reference to his own version of the song produced during the Ivy Saga, "CWC Music Video Holding Out For A Hero".
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Mennopaws and Dragking (two Fairy-types, representing Barb and the Tomgirl Saga, are on his team).
  • Signature Mon: A shiny Mudslacks, representing Sonichu.
