Severin Family

     In General
  • Animal Motif: Birds.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family: Hoo boy. In the Severin family, issues are passed down like heirlooms. The majority of the family is distant and fractured at best, while the matriarch's direct line suffers from generations of abusive parenting.
  • Blood Magic: The witches in this family specialize in blood magic.
  • Healing Hands: Though not as powerful as the Moreaus, they can use this to a certain extent.
  • Hereditary Twinhood: Severin girls are always born in pairs.
  • Idle Rich: Aside from the matriarch line using their wishes to get rich husbands to fill the family coffers, the rest of the family just use said coffers to go on trips and the like, assuming that they're not doing things for the matriarch line in order to get greater access to said coffers.
  • Summon Magic: Can use this to summon their Familiars, along via a Summoning Ritual for a demon when they're 21 to make a Deal with the Devil.

     Camille Severin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_01_at_112740_am.png
A young depressed witch who's coming to terms with her sexuality and her past.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: One of the many causes for Camille's depression is the loss of her sister Chloe in her childhood.
  • Bookworm: Shown to have quite the love for reading and literature.
  • Changeling Fantasy: While at first Camille is horrified to learn that her father was a Leroux Camille eventually comes to appreciate having extended family that doesn't pressure her into an arranged marriage and encourages her to pursue her own happiness.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While she tends to wear dark clothes and lipstick, she's not evil, just struggling with depression.
  • Disappeared Dad: Much is made of Camille's dead mother, but most witches dismiss father as inconsequential. Camille learns from her paternal grandmother that he died in a car crash soon after she and her sister were born.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Word of God all but states that Camille's discovery of her Leroux heritage is a parallel of a young lesbian discovering that they're gay and hiding it from their family. Nyra even thinks she's trying to come out to her at the end of the party.
  • Dude Magnet: Camille gets more men asking her to dance at a fancy socialite party than her more glamorous cousin, and is the first to get a marriage proposal. Not that it's doing her any favors.
  • Glowing Eyes: Every time Camille's powers are manifesting without restraint, her eyes glow white, indicating that she is losing control. It usually coincides with Camille's emotions getting the better of her, usually her anger.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Subverted, while Camille usually has one iconic outfit that she wears, she will occasionally switch up her wardrobe throughout the comic. It's lampshaded when Nyra and Dendro find an entire closet of nearly identical blouses and skirts.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Camille is a lesbian and she presents very femininely. She gets very flustered when Nyra and Dendro compliment her.
  • Mad Eye: Very briefly sports one as she taunts a defeated Athalie to kill her.
  • Nice Girl: Despite of her depression and trauma, Camille is a genuinely sweet and polite young woman who means no harm to anybody.
  • Power Incontinence: Her mixed heritage grants her blood and plant magic powers, but her mastery of either is sketchy at best. Strong emotions, however, give her a boost in power, at the cost of control, leading her to grow large thorned vines without restraint.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: Gets one when trying to falsely claim she is fine and in control when she hears that Athalie is alive. Her resentment and anger is so strong that her powers go out of control and other people near her also get nosebleeds. Thanksfully, Dendro manages to calm her a little before she could hurt anyone, and Jaquille promptly put her to sleep to prevent further damage.
  • Redheaded Stepchild: Besides the actual red hair she is very much treated as this by her aunt.
  • Soulless Bedroom: When Nyra and Dendro visit a room she uses at one of the Severin estates it's so sterile they say they can't feel her in it at all, reflecting her closed off emotions at the start of the story.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Camille looks exactly like a shorter version of her mother, only with her father's hair color.
  • Unstoppable Rage: After Athalie orders the greenhouse to be burned, with Dendro in it, Camille goes berserk and proclaims that she will kill her. In her blind rage, she doesn't even try to avoid hitting her own familiar, and she sports a very deranged expression all the while, getting sick joy from going after Athalie with murderous intent.

     Avaline Severin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/avaline_muted_webcomic.png
Camille's vivacious and supportive cousin who tries to keep her chin up about her abusive home life.

  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is apparently constantly on trips out of town, ostensibly for business purposes.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The series finale shows that she has entered into a happy relationship with Raum, and as the new Severin Matriarch, is continuing her Aunt Abrielle's legacy in undoing the toxic influence Vanessa had started and is successfully mending relationships with the other families.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Avaline, the daughter of the Severin family matriarch, has her whole room decorated in lavender.
  • Hidden Depths: As much as she loves her cousin, part of her resents Camille for her mother's supposedly more lax treatment of her.
  • Important Haircut: In episode 93, she lets Sylvia cut her hair and help her dye it back to blonde to symbolize breaking free from her mother's control again.
  • Plucky Girl: Despite being under her controlling mother's thumb and knowing that her entire life will be planned out for her, Avaline is still able to find small ways to express herself such as dying her hair blonde (under the pretense it's to honor the family founder) and dressing fashionably (Athalie plans to put the kaibosh on that though). She's also extremely kind and loving to her cousin Camille, despite how coldly her mother treats her.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After her own mother made it absolutely clear that she doesn't love Avaline, nor that she values her as a person for that matter, Avaline fights back by summoning her contracted demon to help her and furiously smashes a vase on Athalie when the latter returns from the trial, knocking her out cold.
  • Traumatic Haircut: More like traumatic dye job. She is forced to go from her fluffy blonde hair to straightened brunette hair, which symbolizes Athalie's increasing control over her.

     Athalie Severin

Matriarch Athalie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_01_at_85755_am.png
Matriach of the Severin
Avaline's mother and Camille's aunt. The current matriarch of the Severin.

  • Absolute Xenophobe: Aside from the LaCour to a degree, she is shown to dislike everyone outside of her own family, even using the Dupre family as The Scapegoat for the greenhouse fire among the Severins as an excuse to cut off the trade between the Severins and the other families that her sister had set up, severely limiting contact with them.
  • Abusive Mom: Athalie is extremely controlling of her niece and daughter. She constantly hurls verbal abuse at her niece and isn't above shattering her daughters self esteem when she fails to nab any suitors. Later chapters reveal that she only gave birth because it was what her family demanded, and she never loved either of them.
  • Appeal to Tradition: Is obsessed with preserving the traditions of the Severin family, even when they make less sense in the modern day or make everyone miserable. For instance, she insisted in giving birth at the mansion instead of the hospital despite modern medicine being just as useful as, or even more so than, Severin blood magic, with her sister pointing out that the reason for that was originally so they'd have aid if something went wrong in the birth. Part of it was so she could do her ritual as part of her plan to kill her sister's family, but still.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Athalie's death, while very much cathartic and deserved, is also surprisingly bittersweet, since despite of her cruelty and crimes she was still just as much of a victim of the Severin generational abuse as Camille and Avaline are, and tragically ended up pushing away the people that did unconditionally love her (Abrielle and Avaline) just to gain the genuine love of a mother that never wanted her.
  • Beneath the Mask: She acts cold, composed and haughty, but once her buttons are pressed she is quick to let her emotions take control, such as her sickly joy when she gets proof that Camille has mixed powers and interprets it as a reason for her to be "Muted", and when she flew into a rage when the court refused to punish Camille. As the LaCour Matriarch justly points out to her, she has been able to escape being put on trial so far because she was able to keep her facade in public, but her outburst led her to be reprimanded and tipped off everyone present on the kind of person she really is, on top on giving credence to the rumors surrounding her.
Babette LaCour: You believe you are beyond reproach. You've avoided a direct trial so far only because you put on a good face. But your mask is slipping. So unless you want the court to judge you... I suggest you put your mask back on. And behave.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: At her execration, she’s given the chance to Face Death with Dignity and go out in a graceful, relatively painless way. But she can’t bring herself to accept defeat and makes one last, borderline suicidal, bid to regain control of the situation, which gets her killed in a much more gruesome fashion.
  • Big Bad: She's the main villian of the story. Made especially appearent when the truth is revealed that she's responsible for summoning Strix to kill her sister and her nieces and was behind the cause of death of her own her oldest daughter via her soul (as payment for the contract). Also doubly so when Atathlie started to eat souls, killing a few Moran family members through their familiars and aimed to kill more, including her own daughter Avaline.
  • Cain and Abel: Athalie hated Abrielle so much that she used her demon wish and the soul of Avaline's older twin to send her summoned demon to murder Abrielle and her daughters.
  • Control Freak: Is obsessed with control and getting her way. Nyra even notes that encouraging Camille and her daughter not to get a license and just get chauffeured around everywhere is just another way to control them.
  • Eaten Alive: Her Karmic Death at the hands of Babette's familiar.
  • Evil Matriarch: Matriarch of the Severin family and will do anything to have the brutal traditions upheld.
  • Freudian Excuse: Athalie was the Un Favorite of an abusive mother who always favored her sister Abrielle, even when berating said sister for flaunting their sacred laws, crushing her sense of self-worth and developing a monstrous sense of envy towards Abrielle. Athalie's error was assuming that their mother could love either of them.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While several people acknowledge that in the end, Athalie is a victim as well, no one even attempts to make that a jusitfication for all the cruelty she's put Avaline and Camille through. And neither is it ever made an excuse for her familicide and her extremely monstrous actions toward the finale, like sacrifcing her own and other witches' familiars.
  • Gold Digger: As she's obsessed with following tradition, she's also focused on her daughter and niece getting money to continue to help the Severin family's tradition.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It is all but stated that Athalie has always been jealous of her sister, which eventually led to a lot of resentment.
  • Hate Sink: Athalie takes away Toben from Camille as a form of punishment, spends most of Camille's life verbally berating her and telling her she's only good for getting married, and gives her own daughter a Breaking Speech at her lowest point. Then she reveals she committed a quadruple-familicide out of envy, shows all the signs of textbook psychopathy, and is maintaining some eldritch power that has devoured her familiar - which she sicced on her own daughter. At this point, the only sympathy to be had for her is that she was too weak to resist being corrupted by her mother, who is somehow an even worse hate sink in-universe. But chances are it'll dry up almost instantly when she starts another greenhouse fire to try to put Camille back in line, along with soul eating, starting with her own familiar as talked about below.
  • Horror Hunger: Ever since she eats her familiar, she wants to eat more souls.
  • Humanoid Abomination: [[spoiler: After eating a few familiars, Athalie looks like as if she fused with Basil through black and red pouring out half of her face, arms and her waist along with her left eye turning red. Even having retractable claws. After taking sap from the tree, Athalie appears human, however she has red eye like shapes on her body and her reflection on the water shows she's anything but. In Episode 116, Raum theorizes with what she's been consuming, she's been quickly turning into a demon.
  • It's All About Me: Claims that her horrendous actions are not what she wants, as she is merely doing her job as a matriarch and keeping her family safe, but it is a thin-veiled excuse to mask her Control Freak tendencies.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Acts a lot like her mother by being cruel, ignorant of other people's feelings towards tradition, treating one of her kids better than the other (and that one is a stretch because she hates children), comparing Avaline to Camille so the former would work harder, generally as toxic as her mother was.
  • Metaphorically True: How Athalie got off scot-free during the trial of the greenhouse fire. She didn't kill her sister and niece or start the fire, which is technically true. Also there were no signs of blood loss from a recent ritual either, due to the fact that Athalie planned this so far in advance.
  • People Puppets: Carves a forbidden sigil into her own daughter so she can't rebel again and do whatever she's told to, "finally being of use to her" as Athalie puts it as.
  • Pet the Dog: Attempted but ultimately aborted. Yes, really. In Episode 122, during a flashback to Sophia and Silvia's birthday she has as she falls to her death into the mouth of Babette's alligator familiar, she and her sister Abrielle have a talk during which their respective husbands get brought up. At first Athalie accuses her sister of lying about her husband's existence since they didn't have a proper wedding, but it is there that Abrielle reveals that Kalen has died by this point in the flashback. Athalie's face surprisingly softens at this reveal and when she sees her sister begin to tear up as she explains she has yet to tell either Camielle or Chloe by this point, Athalie attempts to reach out to her sister's shoulder to comfort her, but ultimately holds back. More talking occurs where during which Athalie shows a small bit of concern for her sister's wellbeing now that she's a single mother as well as the family Matriach. Furthermore, when Abrielle admits that she misses being sisters, Athalie surprisngly agrees with and admits she misses her too, but ultimately tells her that it's too late for their relationship to be repaired, the implications being very heavy that she knows that despite her regrets over the broken bond between her and her sister, she will still go through with her plans to murder her sister and nieces. It's very likely the only time Athalie shows any form of humanity, even if it never actually goes anywhere.
  • Redemption Rejection: Goes through two of these near the end of the series. In Chapter 115, when Alice and Raum summon Alette's spirit to show her firsthand that Athalie will never be good enough to her, and that she's making Avaline go through the same pain Alette made her go through, she just simply says that they're lying and even accuses Avaline of being a "spoiled brat" and she can never "accomplish" what she did. And in Chapter 121, when Camille demands that she should at least apologize to Avaline for her abuse and cruelty before her execution, she actually goes along and seems to be genuinely sorry for hurting her daughter... Only to immediately reveal she was just lying and only did it as no more than a sick joke at Avaline's expense.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Not herself, but after the trial, while she outwardly remains composed with hints of her anger, her familiar, Basil, ostensibly hisses and gains several additional eyes, all of them red. Such a violent reaction scares the Jaquille LaCour enough that she immediately notes that Babette must be informed of this event. Considering how a familiar is linked to their witch's soul, Basil's reaction can be interpretated as Athalie's own. Has this after eating a few familiars, as her left eye turns red. At bit later she has red eye like spots on her body along with her eyes and mouth turning red and demonic when she keeps getting more power.
  • Sanity Slippage: She was never completely sane to begin with, but it's after eating her familiar Basil and acquiring a taste for familiar flesh that she really starts going off the rails.
  • Sibling Murder: Discussed. During the trial, she is asked point-blank if she knows anything about the summoned demon who took the lives of her sister and one of her niece, with the clear underlying accusation that she may have been responsible for it. Athalie is visibly stunned by the question, and coldly refutes it. She was lying.
  • Smug Snake: For her all cruelty and planning, she believes to hold more power than she actually has. When faced with calm and serious threats from the head matriarch of the LaCour family, on LaCour grounds, it is apparent that she is deeply scared of her, and with good reason.
  • The Sociopath: Even her Mask of Sanity is outright sociopathic, with her actively abusing her daughters in public and treating them as things to be used for the family. The real her is even worse: She's incredibly spiteful, uses her own daughters as tools and sacrifices (and in the case of her elder daughter, literally), sees nothing wrong with taking murderous revenge on her sister and nieces for being 'better' than her, and reacts to being outed for all of this by her livid daughter as 'losing'. And that's not even getting into when she decides to embrace what she truly is.
  • The Unfavorite: Was this to her Mother Alette at a horrific degree, as she would constantly praise and dote on Abrielle as the "Golden Child" of the two, while she would constantly ridicule, insult, and neglect Athalie even to the point when on her death bed, even though Athalie was right their for her while Abrielle was not able to come, Alette completely ignored Athalie's presence like she was not even there, and her last words where literally just once again praising the very ground Abrielle stood on. To say it was a strong motivation for her actions would be a complete understatement.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: It's been implied that Athalie was actually much kinder and had a personality similar to Avalines as a child, until her resentment and envy turned her into the Monster she is today.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Athalie and Abrielle were actually the best of friends as children similar to Camille and Avaline, with even Word of God confirming that they named the other's familiar for them. Sadly over the years, Athalie's envy and resentment of Abrielle replaced any love she had for her sister.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: She was completely obsessed with gaining her mother's love and approval. In fact, her current actions can be seen as her still trying to impress Alette, even though, as Silvia herself lampshades, Alette has been dead for 20 years now.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: For all her bravado, Athalie is genuinely distraught when the LaCour Matriarch puts her in her place and makes it abundantly clear that she holds no power inside the LaCour's house.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: After getting a fatal wound from a snapped Camille, Athalie takes Strix's earlier "advice" and acts like the monster she truly is. First by eating her own familiar to get the piece of her soul back and by eating more pieces of souls when a few of the Moran familiars came at the wrong place, wrong time.

     Silvia Severin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/silvia_muted_webcomic_6.png
The caretaker of the Severin mansion in the swampland.
Click to see her as a child

  • Aloof Big Sister: Justified, Silvia is very cold and distant towards her younger twin sister Sophia because Sophia is an abusive Spoiled Brat with absolutely no situational awareness or basic decency.
Silvia: The painting fell. Everyone is fine.
    Sophia: [indignantly] I'm not fine!!
    Silvia: Shut up.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Sophia's Cain.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The creator confirmed that Silvia was one who gave Sophia her scars (she scratched her with her fingernails) because Silvia was upset that Sophia was making fun of her scars.
  • Parental Substitute: Takes on a motherly/sisterly role towards Camille after her mother's death.
  • Scars Are Forever: The marks over her eye are a resulted of her first failed attempt to summon her familiar.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knew about Camille's mixed lineage and didn't tell anyone about it for years.

     Sophia Severin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sophia_muted_webtoon_1.png
The caretaker of Athalie's house and Avaline's nanny. Is Silvia's twin sister.
  • Bad Liar: According to her sister Silvia, Sophia is a horrific liar.
Silvia: There are a lot of good liars in this family. You're not one of them. Plus your eyebrow twitches when you lie.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Silvia's Abel.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much of bitch Sophia is, Silvia wants to believe she isn't as godawful as Athalie.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's implied that Sophia's animosity towards Silvia is out of jealousy for being their Aunt Alette's favorite of the two.
  • Jerkass: Sophia is a jerk, not only abusing Avaline, but generally being an ass due to wanting to stubbornly follow tradition, hoping to be matriarch next even to the point where if Avaline turned up dead after Athalie used her as a puppet, Sophia was hoping she would be matriarch first instead of worrying about her missing family members' well being.
    • Jerkass with a Heart of Gold: And ultimately, Silvia is proven right when Sophia aids Inira by helping her recover blood faster after the latter obtained a nasty neck wound from Athalie. Also even offers to help with the Severin paper work for a time... with a fee but still helps nonetheless.
  • Spoiled Brat: Her own sister calls her this, and not without reason. Sophia only aids Athalie so she can have a chance to become the next Matriarch, and constantly bullied Avaline as a child foe her own amusement. A flashback to the twin's birthday even shows Sophia trying to steal some of Silvia's presents for herself. Also while willing to help continue the paperwork of the Severin family while the others want a break after Athalie was handled, she wants to go on a vacation trip in return for her efforts.

     Abrielle Severin

Abrielle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_10_at_34349_pm.png
Camille's mother. She was chosen as the Severin's matriarch, a position that her twin sister Athalie inherited after her tragic death.
  • Act of True Love: Abrielle used her wish to help her boyfriend Kalen transition completely into a male. It's implied that the reason the demon Abrielle made her wish on didn't ask for a price was because of this trope alone.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Kalen loved to call Abrielle "Ellie" when they were together.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Met and fell in love with Kalen as children.
  • Deal with the Devil: Like everyone else in her family, Abrielle made a pact with a demon in order to get a wish fulfilled. Unlike everyone else, she didn't wish for a rich husband: she gave her wish to her love, Kalen, allowing him to fully transition from female to male.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Flashbacks show Abrielle as an extremely loving and devoted mother towards her children, and her surviving daughter Camille still misses and mourns for her along with her sister Chloe deeply years after their deaths.
  • Nice Girl: Was a very kind and gentle woman in life, while also being an incredibly loving mother towards her daughters.
  • Only Sane Man: Was the only one out of her mother and sister to openly accept modern medicine and hospitals, as she knew that their magic could only do so much for healing, and realized that overusing their blood magic was actually dangerous towards their bodies.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Fell in love with Kalen for his friendly, compassionate nature.

     Alette Severin

Alette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_09_28_at_110356_am.png
Camille's late Maternal Grandmother. She was the Severin's matriarch before her daughter, Abrielle, inherited it after she passed away from her illness.

  • Abusive Mom: She encourages her daughters to fight each other to try hard/be ambitious, and believes that one of her kids is an angel and the other is a devil. In fact, she'd almost make her daughter Athalie look innocent compared to her if Athalie didn't later murder her family and start taking souls.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Alette was very beautiful in an elegant, gothic sense, which didn't hide the fact that she was an abusive tyrant.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: Alette has one bluish-purpleish eye (probably a cataract) and almost makes her daughter Athalie look tame in comparision.
  • Evil Is Petty: Alette's The Reason You Suck Speech in Episode 115 towards Athalie on why she never loved or approved of her basically boils down to simply because she just found Athalie boring.
  • Ironic Death: Died an early death due to her overuse of Blood Magic.
  • For the Evulz: While Athalie at least has the excuse of being a tyrant Matriarch due to her trauma and envy, it's been all but stated Alette was a tyrant simply because it was fun.
  • Parental Favoritism: She clearly liked Abrielle the most out of her two daughters as she always thought that Athalie was lying about her. Ironically, Abrielle liked her the least out of the two and was trying to get away from her toxic mother.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has pure white hair (Word of God says it was due to sickness and stress) and looks to be about 40-50ish. She also abused her daughters, with poor Athalie seeming to bear the brunt of it. This is implied to be a major reason that Athalie abused her own daughter and niece, and Alette rejecting Athalie on her deathbed seems to have been the reason for Athalie's Heel–Face Turn.

LaCour Family

     In General
  • Animal Motif: Alligators and Bullfrogs.
  • Judge, Jury, and Executioner: The LaCour family made the rules and serve as the court family of the witches. And also will follow the "executioner" part if things get that bad.
  • Power Nullifier: Since Babette gave every witch family magic, she, along with the rest of her family can temporarily put a block on it or remove it completely.

     Babette LaCour

Matriarch Babette

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_01_at_85227_am.png
Matriarch of the LaCour
The current matriarch of the LaCour family.

  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Wears golden accessories when she makes her debut, showing her status amongst the witch families. When using her magic in Episode 121 to null Camille's vines latching onto Athalie and summon her familiar to finish the latter off, Babette's eyes glow golden in contrast to the white power glows of Camille and Jaquille's. To show that she's the one on top of the pecking order. Also this is shown when the title of Matriarch gets past on, the new holder gets golden eyes of their own during the power transfer.
  • My Greatest Failure: She regards her failure to examine Athalie further during her trial after Abrielle's death as one of her greatest failures because if she had, Camille and Avaline would likely be in a healthier place mentally as adults.
  • Older Than She Looks: Along with being a grandmother, Episode 98 reveals she is a matriarch for a lot longer than she looks and will admit.
  • Power Nullifier: Implied as that's what her family's magic specializes in along with what being Muted (the permanent type) is about and later confirmed when Jaquille temporarily uses it to stop a fight and that since Babette gave each family their powers, she can just as easily cut them off from it, like the fate of one family beforehand.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As the head of the family in charge of settling differences and issues between witches' families, she shows herself to be level-headed, calm and collected, and not easily swayed by words or emotions. While she firmly disagrees to have Camille "muted", she makes it clear that it is because it would be a misuse of a process designed to protect children from themselves and from people who would use their powers to gain advantage over other families, noting that Camille didn't hurt anyone and that her actions didn't warrant such a terrible punishment (especially since, as an adult with a summoned familiar, being muted would essentially kill her). While she distrusts Athalie, she does remind Camille's grandmother that she didn't forget that she hid Camille's heritage from the court, and that if Camille had injured or killed people through her power outburst, the trial would have taken an entirely different direction. In the end, she wants to uphold the witches' laws and respect the spirit of said laws, thus why she doesn't take immediate further action following the trial despite suspecting Athalie of nefarious actions: her hands are tied. She notes that depending on how events unfold, she may have to change some things regarding the independence of witches' families.
  • The Stoic: She never raises her voice during the trial, and was able to calmly silence and scare Athalie with a few chosen words and a subtle display of power.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: As the head of the family responsible for mediating witches' issues, she has no choice but to uphold the law and act as neutral as possible, though she is not blind to the kind of person Athalie is. She needs someone from the Severin's family to request a formal trial to be able to pursue action against her, despite her own suspicions. However, she keeps a close eye on how the events are unfolding, believing that the situation that led to Camille's trial is far from being over. And she is indeed correct.
  • Seen It All: Babette drops the bombshell onto Jaquille that she's seen Athalie's case before and in fact, it was the family she had to outright remove completely, since they believed eating their familiars was a good idea.

     Jaquille LaCour
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_01_at_94723_am.png
One of the granddaughters of the matriarch, Babette.

  • Handicapped Badass: In Episode 20, she saves Camille from falling into the swamp with the LaCour alligator familiars and In Episode 99, Jaquille shows that she, and by extension the rest of the LaCour, should not be crossed by using Power Nullifier to stop a fight.
  • Power Nullifier: In Episode 99 Jaquille is revealed to have these powers and uses them to stop fighting to learn about the situation at hand. In Episode 100, for a witch who has mixed magic, she has to make physical contact in order to calm down Camille's powers going out of control.
  • Photographic Memory: Has a very good memory, due to that, she makes sure she remembers important people, such as the only living daughter of the late Severin matriarch, Camille.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Wants to stop magic being misused with the Severins and genuinely wants to help Camille but the way of going about stabilizing her magic through a ritual is at the risk of being muted. Thus, it isn't quite the favorable option in case Camille doesn't reconcile with both sides of her magic. Even so, it's more favorable than outright muting her. This trait of hers is exactly why Babette chooses her to be her successor.

Dupre Family

     In General
  • Animal Motif: Foxes and Cats.
  • Playing with Fire: The witches in this family specialize in fire manipulation.
  • The Scapegoat: The Dupre family were accused for causing the Greenhouse fire. When the truth is, the blame is being pinned on them by Athalie who's the true culprit.

     Lilinyra "Nyra" Dupre

Nyra Dupre

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_09_28_at_15721_pm.png
A member of the Dupre family who does trades with Silvia in secret from Athalie.
  • Berserk Button: When Camille and Nyra first meet, Nyra is pretty jovial up until the former brings up the Greenhouse fire and blames her family for it, making Nyra's mood turn from friendly, to pissed off. Later, harming Camille is one as Athalie and Strix soon finds out.
  • Secret-Keeper: Finds out that Camille is a Leroux after a drunken confession and keeps it secret from the LaCour.

Eloi Family

     In General
  • Animal Motif: Snakes.
  • I See Dead People: The witches in this family specialize in seeing spirits. However, due to their sensitive abilities they're very susceptible to possession, so spirits possessing them is common but a True Demon is more rare and like a deadly virus to them as Diana's case shows.
  • Summon Magic: Can use this to summon souls to try to save them from possession.

     Diana Eloi

Diana Eloi

A member of the Eloi family who unfortunately got possessed by a true demon.

  • Deader than Dead: Her family determined there was too little left of her soul to save and put her to rest.
  • Demonic Possession: Strix possessed her to continue their plan a contract with Athalie of killing her sister along with her nieces and it ends up killing Diana as a byproduct of the possession.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Appears several times in missing posters, but has already been possessed by Strix by the time she shows up in person.

     Alice Eloi

Matriarch of the Eloi
The matriarch of the Eloi family.

  • Poisonous Person: Injects Athalie with a large syringe's worth of snake venom during the final fight, forcing Athalie to expend significant amounts of power purging it from her body and leaving her vulnerable.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Saw no point in muting Camille for impaling Diana, due to the fact that she was already dead from the demon possessing her body and her family putting whatever soul that was left of Diana, to rest. In fact, she's thankful that thanks to Camille and Nyra, Diana's body is with her family now, so the demon can no longer use it.

LeRoux Family

     In General
  • Animal Motif: Woodland Creatures.
  • Caring Gardener: All of the LeRoux that are shown are incredibly kind, gentle, and forgiving souls that are always willing to lend a helping hand.
  • Fairy Companion: The LeRoux are unique in that they can also possess fairies and sprites as Familiars as opposed to only animals like the other families.
  • Green Thumb: The witches in this family specialize in plant manipulation.
  • Summon Magic: Can use this via a tree to summon their fairy familiar companions.

     Kalen LeRoux
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_10_01_at_92933_am.png
Camille's father. He died in a car accident prior to the comic's events, when Camille was still a child.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Met and fell in love with Abrielle as children.
  • The Lost Lenore: Sadly became this to Abrielle after his tragic accident.
  • Nice Guy: Flashbacks show him to be very sweet and gentlemanly.
  • Queer Colors: When Kalen appears at the gates in Silvia's flashback with a bouquet for Abrielle, the flowers are the blue, white and pink of the trans flag. It has been all but stated that Kalen was actually a trans man. Abrielle even used her wish to help him fully transition biologically into a male body, even being able to impregnate Abrielle with their daughters Camille and Chloe, something that Harriet said was a happy surprise to everybody involved.

     Harriet LeRoux

Matriarch Harriet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_09_28_at_14054_pm.png
Matriarch of the LeRoux
Camille's Paternal Grandmother. The current matriarch of the LeRoux family.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: She may be an old woman, but she is the LeRoux matriarch for a reason. Once she decides to fight, she transforms her familiar, Lavender, in a gigantic plant monster that promptly grabs and tears meticulously Athalie to shred. The entire chapter in which she attacks Athalie is filled with bright red tearing sounds, highlighting just how violent her familiar is acting on her behalf.
  • Beware of the Nice Ones: She is a text-book example of an old, gentle and loving grandma. She is also fiercely protective of her loved ones, something that Athalie learns the hard way.
  • Cast from Lifespan: While her help against Athalie was pivotal in subjugating her, the strain on her body was too much, and a year after the events she passes on, peacefully and surrounded by her loved ones.
  • Death Glare: Gives one to Athalie throughout the entire debate, hearing that one of her granddaughters is implied to have been abused in her daughter-in-law's custody. Even her familiar gives one to Basil shortly before that.
  • Granny Classic: Harriet loves showing off pictures of her grandchildren, making cookies, and is a great comforter.
  • Secret-Keeper: Knew that her grandkids, Camille and Chloe had a mixed heritage and didn't inform Babette about it, which doesn't go unnoticed by her when the debate meeting ends.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Once she decides to fight Athalie, she uses her oversized familiar, which is an extension of her soul, to crush her thoroughly, with other witches pointing out that such violent acts are only possible thanks to a lifetime's worth of rage and grief that she had left dormant. With Athalie revealed as the reason she lost her daughter-in-law and granddaughter, and after witnessing the demon she become, she finally has an out to let loose. The contrast between her kind exterior and usual persona and the extremely violent actions she takes is staggering.

     Chloe LeRoux
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chloe_muted_webcomic.png
Camille's twin sister, who died at a very young age.

  • Meaningful Name: The name Chloe means blooming, fitting given her lineage.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Camille, since Chloe appears to have been a much more extroverted child compared to her sister.

     Jazmin LeRoux
Camille's cousin, who is another granddaughter of Harriet LeRoux, also a assisant to her.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jasmine_muted_webcomic.png

  • Meaningful Name: The name Jazmin from its roots means "yasamin" the name of a flower baring plant in the olive genus.

     Rowena LeRoux
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rowena_muted_webcomic.png
Is a great granddaughter of Harriet LeRoux.
  • Meaningful Name: Rowen means "red haired", Rowena can also mean "white spear" which is a type of plant.

Demons

     Dendrobium

Dendro

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2021_09_28_at_23312_pm.png
The demon summoned by Camille, who turns out to be a plant demon rather than a bird one, and the catalyst for the events of the story. Her name is shortened to "Dendro" most of the time.

  • Seashell Bra: Denro's body is the upper body of a human female on top of a massive flower, and the only thing she is wearing on her torso is a pair of large flower petals covering her chest.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Dendro looked very shocked and likely concerned when Athalie stomped on a weakened Strix who could barely call her over.

     Raum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raun_muted_webtoon.png
The demon Avaline summoned for her ritual.

  • Our Demons Are Different: Along with having a bird motif, Raum is a truth demon, able to see the past easily by looking at people also while he can also see the present, but it can easily change if certain acts are done and the future but anything can change it at a moment's notice as he mentions in Episode 97. It's easy for him to read humans, hard for him to read demons but not impossible and as for whatever the hell Athalie turned into, it not only hurts, he doesn't even knows what she is, let alone what she wants.
  • Pointy Ears: He has some black on the end of his ears.

     Strix

Spoiler, Click here to see their true form
The demon possessing Diana. They are haunting Camille, and seemingly wants her to suffer a terrible fate.
  • Evil Is Petty: She tortures Camille by forcing her to watch her family die on repeat just because she's pissed Camille survived the demon's initial assassination attempt and trapping the demon on earth for 13 years.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Out of the three demons that have a major role in the comic, she is the only one actively malicious. She fully admits that she enjoys making others suffer and takes sadistic pleasure in forcing Camille to relive her family's death over and over again. Perhaps as a direct result of this, she's the only demon who leaves the main cast for good after season 2.
  • Villain Has a Point: She's a sadistic murderous asshole, but is also completely correct when she calls out Athalie's attempt to justify having her relatives murdered for the pitiful excuse that it is.
