Characters introduced in Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle

Kei Iwase

  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Kei wears one as a part of his fighting attire.
  • Childhood Friend: To Chiaki since they both trained under Chiaki's father Hagane in his martial arts fighting style when they were young kids.
  • Expy: He has a personality much like Terry Bogard and an appearance that is very similar aside from differences regarding coloring (being that Kei is a brunette who primarily wears blue) and choice of attire (Kei wears a bandana whereas Terry has a cap). Also interesting to note that Kei also has an attack that mimics Terry's Power Geyser.

Chiaki Ichinomiya

Voiced by: Hekiru Shiina

  • Ass Kicks You: She has a butt attack as part of her fighting style.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: The case with her outfit from the first game. Averted with her appearance in Critical Blow.
  • Childhood Friend: To Kei since they both trained under Chiaki's father Hagane in his martial arts fighting style when they were young kids.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Wore her hair in this style in her debut game. She ditches this for a Bob cut-style haircut in her next appearance.

Bobby Loggins

Voiced by: Tetsuya Iwanaga

  • Delinquent: Highlighted with one of his alternate palettes which gives him a more stereotypical punk-ish black leather jacket.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Though it's a stretch to call him evil, as even at worst he's simply a jerk, though regardless he fits this trope. Bobby isn't the nicest guy around, but he also has his young sister Clara whom he genuinely cares for and plans to use the prize money to cover the cost of her medical bills.
  • Set Swords to "Stun": Averted. Bobby has a knife (in Critical Blow at least), and it clearly draws blood whenever he lands hits on opponents.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A guy with platinum blonde hair who is a very rough-around-the-edges delinquent.

Mark Stanford

Voiced by: Koji Tobe

  • Childhood Friend: To Marry since their respective families have a strong friendship when it comes to both personal and business relations.
  • Classy Cravat: Part of his outfit in Critical Blow.
  • Cultured Badass: Particularly in his Critical Blow appearance. In addition to wearing a highly impractical for fighting suit (including the aforementioned cravat), his hair is styled in an aristocratic style, which some may say is in a foppish manner.
  • Dance Battler: A few of his moves resemble ballet maneuvers.
  • Something about a Rose: In his role as a butler for the Phillips family, he diligently works to manage a garden of roses. Also, during battle he can throw out roses as projectiles.
  • The Stoic: He's stone faced to the point of being Comically Serious, especially when considering his fighting style uses some ballet-style leaps. Hence why Marry tends to playfully tease him frequently.

Neil McDaniel

Voiced by: Takashi Nagasako

  • Acrofatic: He may be a heavyset fellow, but he's not that significantly slower than the other fighters.
  • Bald Head of Toughness: Of which makes a purple dragon-face tattoo on his head clearly visible. However, curiously the tattoo is gone in his appearance in Critical Blow.
  • A Fool and His New Money Are Soon Parted: Neil had canonically won the first Power of Solid fighting tournament in Genei Tougi and gained the huge cash prize reward, but thanks to his wasteful habits (particularly drinking), he ended up losing his entire money in no time at all.
  • Mighty Glacier: Strong but slow.

Reymond Norman

Voiced by: Hironori Miyata

  • Cyborg: Becomes one in Critical Blow. Prior to the game's events, Reymond was sent on a secret military mission by his superiors to investigate and infiltrate the Merkuar Conglomerate, but he was seriously injured during the mission that the only option to help save his life was to give him cybernetic implants, thus Reymond became a cyborg and plans to complete his mission once and for all.
  • Shout-Out: His name appears to be a tribute to Norman Schwarzkopf, an American military officer and the commander of coalition forces during Operation Desert Storm.

Han Fei Lan

Voiced by: Reizo Nomoto

  • Old Master: Han is a strong and powerful elderly fighter who enters the first tournament in order to reinvigorate his fighting spirit.
  • Put on a Bus: Han doesn't return in Critical Blow, with no official explanation on what had happened to him.

Harry Hopkins

Voiced by: Mari Maruta

  • Pink Means Feminine: She is a subversion. While she is a young woman and has an appearance that features pink as a prominent coloring, particularly her some of her clothing and pink dyed hair, Harry is very much a Tomboy.
  • Put on a Bus: Harry doesn't return in Critical Blow, with no official explanation on what had happened to her.
  • Tomboyish Name: She is a woman with a traditionally masculine nickname.

Berserker

Voiced by: Go Oami

  • The Dragon: For Marry Phillips, granted neither Marry nor Berserker are malevolent individuals.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Though it is named "Berserker", its fighting style isn't that, well, berserk.
  • Robot Athlete: It's a robot in a martial arts tournament.
  • Secret Character: To unlock Berserker as a playable character in Genei Tougi, a player has to complete arcade mode without using any continues. It is made a default character in Critical Blow.
  • Transforming Mecha: Berserker has two forms. One is its robot form which it is primarily and another is that of a four wheeled motorcycle-like vehicle form which Marry uses as her personal transport.

Marry Phillips

Voiced by: Naoko Ishii

  • Big Bad: Of the first game, granted she is only an opposing fighter rather than a full-on villain.
  • Break the Haughty: Happens to her between the games. The Introductory scenes of her arcade ladder in Critical Blow reveals that she spent so extravagantly on the first Power of Solid fighting tournament that it almost bankrupted the Phillips Konzern (of which the Merkuar Conglomerate exploited this moment of financial difficulty to buy her father's company). As punishment, her father sent her off to work on hard labor to teach her humility.
  • Childhood Friend: To Mark since their respective families have a strong friendship when it comes to both personal and business relations.
  • Final Boss: The default final opponent of Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Her outfits in both games are primarily purple.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Not that she wasn't already pretty in her debut, but when she returns in Critical Blow, her outfit features some more exposed skin, including some of her cleavage and legs.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Mary (and variants across other Western languages) is usually spelled with one r, but hers is spelt with another r.
  • Rich Bitch: She's wealthy and constantly flaunting it to us peasants.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: Let's see, a blonde rich person who is holding a tournament in order to show off to everyone their fighting prowess? She's basically a female version of Rugal Bernstein minus the black-market arms dealing and killing her opponents to make them into macabre trophies.

Hagane Ichinomiya

Voiced by: Ikuya Sawaki

  • Action Dad: He's a dad and a full-time martial artist, potential suitors for Chiaki beware! He is also a crusading widower given that avenging his wife's murder is also something that provides him some extra resolve to be best fighter he can be.
  • Meaningful Name: His name, Hagane, means "steel" in Japanese which reflects his resolve to be the strongest martial artist on earth.
  • Secret Character: In both games.
  • True Final Boss: In Genei Tougi: Shadow Struggle. To fight him, a player will have to complete normal difficulty or higher without using any continues.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: As one to Kazuya Mishima from the Tekken series. Hagane looks similar to Kazuya and they have some similarities in regard to personality, such as a desire to attain martial prowess and to pursue vengeance against someone who had hurt them in the past (Heihachi in Kazuya's case and Merkuar in Hagane's). However, for all of Hagane's Kazuya-like bravado, going so far as proclaiming in his ending in the first game that "The word 'strong' is for ME!", Hagane is someone who still has a loved one he cherishes, his daughter Chiaki, and especially has moral boundaries he will not cross in contrast to Kazuya who made an almost literal Deal with the Devil in Tekken 2 to achieve more power and risked the life of his lover Jun Kazama when it overwhelmed him. In some ways Hagane is sort of Racdym's take on Kazuya had he not fallen into his worst traits and become the villain he has been from the second Tekken game onwards.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Whenever he is in battle, he has his chest on display which also reveals a multitude of scars.
  • When She Smiles: The only time he has an expression other than his usual expression of sternness is in his ending in Critical Blow, when he is seen visiting his late wife's memorial shrine to announce that he has avenged her murder by Merkuar.

    Characters introduced in Critical Blow

Rickey Leon/EX Rickey

Voiced by: Tomokazu Seki

  • Final Boss: When playing as Merkuar in arcade mode, EX Rickey will be the final boss of his arcade ladder.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Rickey has a set of goggles as part of his default outfit. Averted in regard to EX Rickey who ditches both the goggles and hat.
  • Multi-Slot Character: In addition to the regular version of Rickey, there is also another version of him called EX Rickey which can be unlocked. EX Rickey is stronger and faster than his regular self, but as a tradeoff takes more damage from hits.
  • Shock and Awe: His powers manifest in an electrokinetic manner.
  • Shonen Hair: EX Rickey has a hair style which is spiky and sticks straight up. Considering that he has some electrokinetic powers, it is justified in a way.
  • Worthy Opponent: In Critical Blow's theater mode, Rickey gets to engage Hagane Ichinomiya in a battle. After Rickey's victory in defeating Hagane, the highly trained karateka gives his respects to the young fighter.
  • You Killed My Father: His grandmother in this case. He's seeking vengeance for her death and demanding to know why the Merkuar Conglomerate carried out her murder.

Mao Chilling

Voiced by: Kahoru Fujino

Sieguei

  • The Dragon: Serves as this for Merkuar. One particular task he performed for him is murdering Rickey's grandmother.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Berserker. Both of them are automatons of different kinds who serve someone else in some capacity. Though whereas Berserker never does anything malignant to anyone, Sieguei is assigned the task of murdering both opponents and innocent people under Merkuar's orders.
  • Secret Character: He is unlocked by beating the arcade ladder on easy difficulty.

Merkuar

Voiced by: Masaaki Tsukada

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Averted. Even when playing arcade mode as Merkuar, his own ending depicts his body disintegrating into dust. We're sure Merkuar will have plenty of mourners attending his funeral.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: He's a major contrast to Marry. Whereas she was even at her worst a bit prideful and petty, Merkuar is an outright malicious guy who has had some innocent people killed on his orders. Merkuar and Marry also differ in that whereas she is a young woman, by contrast he is an old man who has a body that is gradually decaying beyond repair.
  • Evil Old Folks: His default form when not in battle. Unfortunately for the player, they are not going to have the luxury of an easy fight against an old man as he takes on a monstrous form for fighting.
  • Final Boss: Of Critical Blow.
  • Grand Theft Me: His motivation for holding the second Power of Solid fighting tournament is to find someone to forcefully take their body due to his own becoming old and exhausted.
  • Horned Hairdo: Upon turning into his monster form, his hair turns into literal horns which is befitting his demonic appearance.
  • Monster Modesty: After Merkuar's Hulking Out, the only thing he is wearing is a torn pair of boxers.
