This character sheet is about the playable characters in Don't Starve.

Warning: Due to the sheer amount of spoilers, all spoilers are unmarked!

    In General

  • Action Survivor: No matter their age, strength, or intelligence, each character has proven more than able to survive alone in a world full of hostile creatures.
  • Ax-Crazy: Due to the situation, everyone could qualify. Some of them more than others.
  • Badass Crew: You need to be a badass to survive in a world where everything wants you dead.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: A reoccurring theme throughout the Survivors is many of them wanted something and their wish was granted, but said wish also ended up trapping them in the Constant. This is explicit with Wilson, Wendy, Warly, Wigfrid, Winona, Webber, and Maxwell, and implied for some others.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Most of the human male characters have them. Of the female human characters, only Winona and Wickerbottom have them. The only nonhuman character to have them is Wilba, the Pig Princess from Hamlet.
  • Cast Full of Crazy: Many characters seem to have mental issues from the start. Also, insanity is a game mechanic, so even those who would normally be the only sane men will end up qualifying at some point.
  • Characterization Marches On: Some character quotes got changed in Don't Starve Together to reflect both how the survivors are coping with not being alone anymore and their better comprehension of how the Constant works.
  • Determinator: In Don't Starve Together, the Ancient Fuelweaver tells the survivors that they should just let themselves die for good, rather than face whatever the Big Bads have planned for them. Their answer is to beat the crap out of him.
  • Discard and Draw: Some of the character reworks in Don't Starve Together act like this, giving characters new powers and removing their old ones, or changing their stats to compensate for the change in mechanics.
    • Wolfgang prior to his rework had a much simpler Might system that scaled with his hunger and gave him a speed increase, but he grew hungrier than other characters to make up for it. After his rework, Might became a separate stat and his hunger depletion was changed to be normalized, but he no longer gains speed.
    • WX-78 originally had poor stats, but could eat gears to permanently increase them and could be overcharged by getting electrocuted. Post rework, their base stats were increased to be more average, but gears no longer give permanent upgrades, with their main mechanic instead becoming the circuit and charge system. Being struck by lightning also instead gives you charge.
  • Evil Costume Switch: The Triumphant skins depict what would have happened if the characters had become corrupted by the Nightmare Throne. Inverted with Maxwell's Untriumphant skin, which shows him as William Carter.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Don't Starve Together features various characters from the original game and its DLCs joining forces to survive.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Some of the most destructive quotes got changed into milder ones in Don't Starve Together, implying that the worst impulses of some characters were the result of this trope.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: the extent of this trope varies with every character, but the survivors are ultimately flawed but friendly people who easily welcome new survivors into their group, regardless of species.
  • Letter Motif: Every playable character has a name or a surname starting with a "W". Maxwell seemed to be an exception, until it was revealed that his real name is William Carter.
  • Monochrome Casting: Especially prominent before the release of the Shipwrecked DLC. Prior to its release every human character was white. Even still, the cast remains largely this after the few later additions. Before finding a middle ground in Don't Starve Together the first two characters of color had noticably lighter skin, despite being Hawaiian and Black respectively.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Most of the human female characters and the non-human characters have blank white eyes. Of the male characters, Woodie, Warly, Woodlegs, and Walter have them. WX-78 has black eyes instead.
  • Musical Instrument Voice: The player characters (except Wes) are subtitled but their speech is represented by different instrumental notes.
  • One Degree of Separation: Winona's origin cinematic features a pinboard scheme that implies that all the characters trapped in the Constant might be connected to each other from before the events of the game. Wolfgang's cinematic reveals he actually encountered William Carter aka Maxwell during the trainwreck incident that caused him to go missing. And Wilson's shows the house he used to live in once belonged to Wagstaff.
  • Only One Name: Most surnames of the characters remain unknown, with some exceptions such as Wilson Percival Higgsbury.
  • Personality Powers: Played with. Most characters are usually designed around their perks and stats or vice versa. Some seemingly more magical than others.
  • Prophet Eyes: Characters that don't sport Black Bead Eyes usually have these instead.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: All of the characters have unique strengths and weaknesses, but it has nothing to do with their gender.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Don't Starve Together unites several characters from the solo version of the game, it's DLC's, and some fresh new faces to work together to survive. You're survival group could be formed out of a wannebe scientist, a pyromaniac, a cowardly strongman, a depressed girl and her undead twin, a homicidal robot, a magical librarian, a cursed lumberjack, a mime, an ex-magician turned ex-ruler and kidnapper, an insane performance artist, a boy and the spider that ate him, a food obsessed chef, a handywoman, a soul-stealing demon, a sentient mass of vines, a swampchild warrior, a boy scout and his dog friend, and a time traveler, and all are capable of surviving whatever the Constant throws at them.
  • Red Baron: Every character has their own title which reflects their main character perks, backstory, and personality. However, no one ever refers to a character by their title.
  • Significant Birth Date: Most of the survivors have one, and most of the time it matches with a game update about them in the real world:
    • Wilson's birthday is April 23rd, the date the original Don't Starve was officially released.
    • Willow (May 7th) and Woodie (September 12th)'s birthdays are the days they got their character update in Don't Starve Together.
    • Wolfgang's birthday is October 2nd, the date he was added to Don't Starve's beta.
    • Wendy and Abigail's birthday is November 11th (11/11), Veteran's Day, Singles' Day, and Children's Day in Croatia.
    • Wes's birthday is April 16th, World Voice Day, and Charlie Chaplin's birthday.
    • Maxwell's birthday is October 22nd, the day his character's perks were added to Don't Starve back in 2013, and the day the update "Forgotten Knowledge" was implemented to Don't Starve Together in 2020.
    • Webber's birthday is April 30th, the date Reign of Giants was officially released.
    • Winona's birthday is September 13th, the date she was added in Don't Starve Together. Wortox (March 28th), Wormwood (June 6th), and Warly (July 25th) follow the same pattern, and Wurt misses it by a week, as her birthday is October 17th and she was added in Don't Starve Together on October 24th.
    • Wanda's birthday is August 8th (8/8), which could be a nod to the Infinity Symbol (∞) and her situation as a person existing "out of time".
  • Suddenly Voiced: Every character's "voice" is represented by a musical instrument, with dialogue captioned above their heads. This is usually kept up in promotional material, save for a few animated shorts. In Wigfrid's short, she sings along to one of her old opera songs, and in a trailer for the annual Winter's Feast update, Wilson, Willow and Webber sing a winter carol, voiced by some of the game's developers.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Don't Starve Together gave each of the survivors (excluding Warly) a favorite dish. When eating said favorite dish, their hunger is restored more than usual.
  • Unconventional Alignment: Characters with skill trees all have a final branch that unlocks based on which of the two final bosses, the Ancient Fuelweaver and the Celestial Champion, they defeat first. Doing so earns them favour from either Charlie or Wagstaff, and grants them buffs that benefits them based on the side, like greater damage against nightmare or lunar creatures if you picked their opposing side.
  • Vague Age: None of the characters have a definite age. Some characters look like children; but due to the stylized nature of the art design and their in-game models (all player characters have big heads and small bodies of the same proportions), they may actually be much older than they appear. While not exact ages, Word of God has revealed that Wilson is in his early 30s and Willow is in her early 20s, and that Wendy is between 8 and 10 years old.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: When a character's sanity gets low enough, they'll see the world getting darker, shadows that look at them, and some creatures will change their forms. When the sanity gets even lower, the shadows will start to attack them.

Introduced in the base game

    Wilson

The Gentleman Scientist

"I will conquer it all with the power of my MIND!"

"Do you like science?"
Voiced by: a trumpet

Wilson Percival Higgsbury is the only playable character at the beginning of Don't Starve, and the main character of the game.

In Don't Starve, Wilson will slowly grow a beard over several days, which offers increased insulation against the cold, but causes him to overheat faster in the warmer seasons in the DLC expansions. If he chooses, he can shave it off, removing the increased risk of overheating, restoring sanity, and acquiring the resulting beard hair to use as a component in the construction of a Meat Effigy, a meat-filled wooden sculpture of himself, that resurrects him into a new body when he dies.

The Wilson Rework update in Don't Starve Together gives Wilson a skill tree to work with that expands his crafting abilities and gives him buffs, from upgrading torches to be brighter or throwing them to use as temporary light sources, to being able to store food in his beard, to being able to perform more complex crafting.

  • And I Must Scream: Although this can also happen to the other player characters at the end of the game, the Cyclum Puzzles reveals that canonically, Wilson was the one who freed Maxwell and took his place on the Nightmare Throne. Fortunately, Charlie frees him... then subjects him to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Anime Hair: His hair is styled in a peculiar 'W' shape, and (along with his clothing) makes him look like he came from a Tim Burton movie. When a small explosion blows it back, it soon puffs into his earlier hairstyle.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: He says that he doesn't believe in the supernatural, despite being friends with a guy who regularly turns into a beaver/moose/goose, a boy fused with a spider, a sapient plant, an imp and a fish-girl. He also doesn't accept the existence of ghosts even after becoming one himself.
  • Badass Bookworm: He's a well-studied scientist capable of fighting all manner of dangerous monsters.
  • Berserk Button: For some reason, Wilson really hates Maxwell, outright stating "I hate that guy." if you examine him. His origin trailer reveals why...
  • Black Bead Eyes: Has them; look at his page image.
  • Boring, but Practical:
    • His power is being able to grow a beard. Sounds lame compared to things like extra strength, being immune to fire, or having a familiar... yet he comes with no weaknesses at all, unlike the others. The beard itself gives free sanity when shaved and keeps him warm in the winter as well. Wilson has the easiest access to beard hair among the survivors, a key component in creating the Meat Effigy, which will revive a survivor once upon death, without needing to go insane and hunt Beardlings or Beardlords.
    • As of his rework, Wilson's Insight Tree can grant various not-flashy but not-insignificant buffs such as better torches, converting common items into rarer ones (such as the limited quantity/dangerous or tedious to farm ancient gemstones) or simply making his beard grow faster. His affinity tree, unlocked after defeating either the Ancient Fuelweaver or Celestial Champion, simply grants him a 10% damage and defense buff dependent on which side he chooses, along with crafting their rare materials, Pure Horror and Dreadstone, or Pure Brilliance.
  • Broken Pedestal: While we get no details as to whether Wilson knew of Wagstaff before arriving in the Constant (a Freeze-Frame Bonus on the ad he's holding in his rework short shows he bought Wagstaff's house in an auction "for the scientifically inclined"), "Interference" show's he's genuinely excited to help the cryptic inventor with his projects. Finding the blueprints to the radio that would one day bring him into contact with Maxwell, however, seems to make him doubtful of the alliance.
  • Buffy Speak: Scientist he may be, but he tends to use informal, simple sentences to describe things ("It's all piney," "It's cute, in a gross kind of way.") He sometimes uses scientific terms, however; for example, when he gets wet, he says: "Oh, H2O."
  • Butt-Monkey: In the animated segments of various trailers and promotional images. Due to the nature of the game, and him being the mascot/default character of the franchise, Wilson is the one most commonly seen interacting with (or more likely, getting screwed over by) whatever new mob or feature is being introduced. Even when his life isn't directly being threatened, he still has a tendency to sport a surprised (or frightened) expression on his face.
  • Cheerful Child: His unused "Young" skin depicts him as a very happy kid.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Downplayed with Wilson. Much of his dialogue shows him as... rather eccentric. He's obsessed with puns, his ideas as to what science entails can be bizarre, and the stuff he has invented have an unusual thought process put into them. The Gardeneer Hat is essentialy a wearable plant pot, made because Wilson believes that to understand plants, one must wear them. However, most of the other survivors are even more eccentric, making Wilson one of the more grounded ones.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: When examining a rabbit hole, he'll remark that it must lead to "the secret kingdom of the bunnymen." With the addition of underground caves to the game, it turns out he's right.
  • Deal with the Devil: His character intro reveals that he agreed to build a machine for Maxwell in exchange for ultimate scientific knowledge. The machine is what ended up stranding him in the Constant.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite having every reason to despise Maxwell, when Wilson reaches the Nightmare Throne, he ultimately chooses to set Maxwell free.
  • Fatal Flaw: Curiosity. Wilson is normally cautious and grounded, but once something tickles his scientific curiosity, he'll follow the trail regardless of the dangers involved. Maxwell tricks him into building the portal by offering him forbidden knowledge, and the "Interference" short shows him willingly ignoring the find of a dead body under the floorboards in favor of focusing on a key he found.
  • Finger-Tenting: His promo art for his "Shadow" skin has him do this, combined with a maliciously devious expression.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: He doesn't believe in the supernatural because it's "unscientific," despite seeing supernatural creatures and occurrences on a daily basis while in the Constant.
  • For Science!: His primary motivation for some of the things he does.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Not at all to the extent of Winona, but he does like to tinker as a scientist, and a lot of the craftable materials in Don't Starve Together (like all of the boating stuff, for instance) are noted to have been made by him and taught to the other survivors.
  • The Generic Guy: He's well-balanced and has no special ability besides growing a mighty beard, as well as being the default character. Downplayed with the introduction of his tech tree, which gives him additional abilities and buffs.
  • Genius Ditz: Smart enough to build Maxwell's door, dumb enough to listen to a creepy voice in a radio promising him unlimited knowledge. In addition, some of his examination quotes lapse into Buffy Speak or are just plain weird.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: His character title is the "Gentleman Scientist". He is also reasonably emotionally well-adjusted compared to most of the characters, though he also comes off as a geek rather than gentlemanly. And as revealed in the trailer, he was just really, really starved for ideas.
  • Go for the Eye: He yells "Go for the eyes!" as his generic battle cry when attacking most things, even if what he's attacking doesn't have eyes.
  • Hollywood Torches: Whereas normally the game averts this, with enough Insight points Wilson can create them and even gain the ability to toss them on the ground to act as disposable emergency light sources.
  • Implausible Deniability: As a Flat-Earth Atheist, he'll say that he doesn't believe in ghosts or imps directly to Wortox's ghost.
  • Informed Ability: Despite being described as "The Gentleman Scientist," he doesn't have any exclusive crafting recipes or advantages in science like Wickerbottom or Wagstaff. His introduction cinematic shows that he is, in fact, quite a bad scientist. Downplayed in his rework, where he has a skill tree, but even then, he's less of a scientist and more of an alchemist.
  • Jack of All Stats: His attributes are all average (his sanity is higher than hunger or health, but so is that of most other characters'), his only special power is his beard, and he has no special weaknesses. Downplayed slightly as of the rework with the introduction of his skill tree, which diversifies his abilities and can provide him with buffs.
  • Looks Like Cesare: Let's see... Crazy hair? Check. Very pale skin? Check. Dark circles under his eyes? Check. Skinny? Sort of; he has thin limbs and a bean-shaped body.
  • Mad Scientist: Wilson is a downplayed example, in that while he can get rather hyper when anything remotely scientific occurs, and has some very bizzare ideas as to what that entails, he's otherwise reasonably sane. He can play the trope straight however during Hallowed Nights, with one of his costumes making look like a more traditional mad scientist, and his quote for the Mad Scientist Lab show he's fine sacrificing sanity for science.
Sanity is a small price to pay for science!!
  • Manly Facial Hair: Played With. Wilson's sole unique mechanic is to grow a "magnificent" beard, and descriptions of his beard skins show he's quite proud of it, too. At full size it can cover the front of his body completely and provides great insulation against the cold. Its only drawback is that the increased insulation makes him more likely to overheat in the warmer seasons unless it's shaved. Unlike the other survivors with facial hair, he has no issue with shaving his off.
  • The Medic:
    • In the wave survival event, "The Forge", Wilson's new perk of being able to revive teammates three times as quickly with quite a lot of their health restored makes him ideal for keeping the party alive.
    • He apparently knows how to amputate limbs, if his analysis of the Peg Leg in the Shipwrecked DLC is to be believed.
  • Meet My Good Friends Lefty and Righty: Or as he calls them, "Logic" and "Reason".
  • Mirror Character: With Maxwell, in regards to how they ended up in the current world; after experiencing an all-time low in their lives, both started dabbling with unknown forces that they shouldn't have touched. Perhaps that's why Maxwell chose him—because Wilson reminded Maxwell of his old self.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: Some of his newer quotes show that he is quite touchy about his hair. This even gets remarked on in Together (when he kills someone):
Willow: Hey [Wilson]! Your hair is dumb! Raaaugh!
  • Odd Friendship: An eccentric scientist wannabe and a crazed pyromaniac. Promotional materials usually feature him and Willow together, and from what their interactions imply, the two get along and trust each other well.
  • Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Actually justified. His Deal with the Devil with Maxwell gave him ultimate knowledge of everything scientific. In spite of this, it's averted in other ways — for instance, he still doesn't know anything about geology.
  • The Protagonist:
    • He's the first playable character, heavily featured in advertising, the first character to be given an official backstory, and has two shorts dedicated to his connection to the story. He's definitely the most focused character of Don't Starve next to Maxwell, Charlie, Wagstaff, and Winona.
    • He canonically sits on the Nightmare Throne, taking over temporarily before Charlie shows up. And in the Maxwell short Encore, he's the first to notice the rose on Maxwell's jacket to bloom, making him suspicious, and his first short continues the continuity with him studying the roses before being interrupted by Wagstaff's hologram. Safe to say his role in the story has gotten bigger.
  • Pungeon Master: The man has an obsession with puns, given the fact nearly half of his lines are some kind of pun or wordplay based joke.
Wilson: Gives me a net advantage!
    Water you think it's for?
I think tanks are in order.
  • Science Hero: Although it falls into Informed Ability, he certainly carries the attitude. Some of the quotes for new craftable inventions in Together imply that some of them were made by Wilson.
  • Series Mascot: Impossible to miss when researching the game. He's even the icon for both games.
  • Skewed Priorities: His reaction to finding a dead body inside of his new, decrepit home is to first gape in horror... and then, if nervously, cover the body back up and continue searching for a lock to fit the key he found.
  • The Smart Guy: As an amateur scientist among a pyromaniac, strongman, delusional actress and others, he fits this role to a lesser extent than Wickerbottom. However, in some character quotes it implies he occasionally invents some of the tools all players can construct.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: One of his creations, the Gardeneer Hat, a wearable plant pot, was made because of Wilson's belief that one can understand plants by wearing one. Not only does the thing work, it turns out the Ancients had their own version, which you can upgrade the Gardeneer Hat into with Thulecite and a Purple Gem.
  • Stupid Scientist: Though a scientist, Wilson lacks the creativity and further knowledge to pursue any meaningful scientific progress. This is more evident when he's compared to the likes of Wagstaff, Wickerbottom, and Winona, who are far more knowledgeable regarding their work and have the creativity to invent things that no others can. When Wilson attempts such things himself, the shorts show it often goes awry with many mistakes. His pursuit to overcome this and gain more knowledge is a main driving motive for Wilson to accept his Deal with the Devil with Maxwell.
  • Tech Tree: Wilson is the first character to get a skill tree in the Wilson Rework update. You get to make upgrades to certain stats like your torch can broaden in light, to being able to store food in your beard, to more complicated crafting involving nightmare fuel and gems.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Maxwell, whom he dislikes immensely, during the events of the Cyclum Puzzle comics and when working to survive in the Constant with him in Don't Starve Together.
  • The Blade Always Lands Pointy End In: Not a blade per se but Wilson can gain the ability to throw lit torches and have them stick the landing in order to create temporary hands-free light sources.
  • Those Two Guys: Downplayed, but he and Willow are usually paired together in promotional material and are shown to get along fairly well.
  • Time-Passage Beard: His unique gameplay mechanic is to grow an insanely long beard in a short amount of time. It only sounds useless: the beard provides warmth insulation for winter, and it provides one of the key ingredients for the Meat Effigy, one of the few safe ways to cheat death in Don't Starve.
  • Transmutation: Wilson is able to gain this ability as of his rework, being able to convert certain similar items to and fro from each other; this ranges from simply converting twigs into logs to mass producing some of the rarest gems in the game with little of the effort that is usually required to find them.
  • Vague Age: He's stated to be around his 'early thirties'.
  • Waistcoat of Style: Wears a pretty dapper red waistcoat.
  • What You Are in the Dark: While the first game shows him harboring a particular grudge against Maxwell, Maxwell's compendium section shows that when faced with him at the end of Adventure Mode, Wilson chose to free his captor instead of taking any sort of revenge. Maxwell himself is bewildered by the choice.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He's quite the arachnophobe, although he has no trouble getting along with Webber.
    ''"I hate spiders."
    "Ewwww!"
"I'm going to stomp you dead!"
    "Gah! More spiders!"
    "Shoo, you nasty thing!"
    "AHHHHHHHH! That spider is huge!"

    Willow

The Firestarter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/willow_5.png
"All will bathe in the prettiest of flames."

"Hmmm. I wonder if these will burn."
Voiced by: a flute

Willow is the first character to be unlocked via experience. Willow is a pyromaniac.

In Don't Starve, Willow is immune to fire damage, regenerates sanity from standing near fires, and has a lighter that functions as a torch that never runs out of durability. However, she has lower maximum sanity than most other survivors, and will automatically (and randomly) start fires near herself if her sanity gets low.

In Don't Starve Together, her abilities are different. Her lighter runs out but can be crafted and cooked on, she no longer sets random fires when her sanity is low, and she comes with her stuffed bear Bernie which comes to life and attacks every hostile mobs if Willow is insane (he just acts as bait for the Shadow Creatures with other insane characters). Other changes involve her taking longer to overheat with reduced damage and her getting colder more easily with more damage and sanity loss.

In December 19, 2023, Willow received a skill tree that lets her upgrade her lighter to allow for the casting of fire spells, along with the ability to buff Bernie.

  • Abusive Parents: Or rather, the matrons in the orphanage she lived in. Their response to Willow waking them up in the middle night due to a Terrorbeak attacking her was to lock her inside a supply closet and snatching Bernie from her as punishment. Because of this, Willow was forced to take drastic measures to survive the next Terrorbeak attack.
  • Admiring the Abomination: For some reason she really likes the Dragonfly and the Dragoons from Shipwrecked.
  • Ax-Crazy: As if her pyromania wasn't bad enough, Willow has an extremely cavalier attitude towards killing everything on the island. Her cinematic origin and her biography give us some very good Freudian Excuses to justify her mindset.
    "We will be great friends!"
"Now I can be with my friend forever."
  • Badbutt: Even with her slight attitude she doesn't go beyond saying 'Crap!'.
    Examining a Deerclops "Holy crap!"
Examining a Deerclops chesspiece sculpture"We kicked its butt."
  • Born Unlucky: Her biography explicitly calls her this. She lost her family when she was young, and on top of that the Shadow Creatures started to hunt her down. After that last night at the orphanage, she learned that to her there was nothing more comforting than seeing the cause of her troubles burn, and it is implied that she took it as a personal ritual to burn down everything around her and start the cycle again in a new place. How bad was her life before the Constant? It is not stated, but to her being trapped in a hellish landscape where everything is after her blood is an improvement.
  • Break the Cutie: She's undergone a lot of trauma, including her family dying, being raised in an Orphanage of Fear, and forced into a situation that led to her becoming a pyromaniac.
  • Burn the Orphanage: Presuming it was indeed an orphanage that Willow left in "From the Ashes", whatever it was that she did to cause the explosion that saved her from the shadow monster appeared to engulf at least one of the women who looked after the children. As the video ends, we see that the place is filled with a liberal amount of roaring flames that she walks away from into the night. And, given its position of apparent isolation, it can be presumed that unless some other help arrived, there's a good chance that the place was burned down beyond reasonable use. Although it can be presumed that Willow did this entirely by accident and out of fear of the monster, she also didn't seem particularly concerned with any of the other children in the room she had been sleeping in, or really anything besides getting her stuffed bear and leaving.
  • Children Forced to Kill: Her origin cinematic features child Willow in a horrifying kill or be killed scenario. She resolved it by making explode the room she was in causing at least two casualties and turning the place into a blazing inferno.
  • Crutch Character: In the original Don't Starve, her lighter and fire resistance/sanity gain give her a constant light source and an easy way to survive Winter (by burning things near her), but become outclassed later on by superior light sources and warmth items, while her sporadic fires at low sanity remain a problem. Together mitigates this by giving her Bernie and a few other nifty traits, while replacing her low-sanity pyromania with getting colder.
  • Cute and Psycho: Downplayed. She wants to see the world and her enemies burn, but other than that, she's a nice girl... who uses fire to solve all her problems.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She still has a teddy bear, and seems to have a soft spot for cute fluffy animals in general (except for rabbits and beefalos).
Examining a Sharkitten: Hey cutie, where's your mom?
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her origin cinematic reveals that she was an orphan, she was haunted by the Shadow Creatures ever since she was a child and she was forced to burn down the orphanage she lived in to survive one of Their attacks. It is heavily implied that her fire-related abilities and her girl scout training are the reasons why she survived until adulthood.
  • Elemental Powers: In the Forge event, her fire and explosive attacks are increased by 10%. In Don't Starve Together she is immune to fire and the fires she creates take longer to be extinguished, but she is more susceptible to cold and ice attacks as a result. With her skill tree, she graduates to a full blown pyromancer and is able to cast fire spells fueled by ember souls taken from enemies that die while burning.
  • The Gadfly: Her quotes about the other characters in Together really put her in this territory.
  • Girlish Pig Tails: Has a set of long ones. However, she's not actually a child — Word of God pegged her to be in her early twenties.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a teddy bear named Bernie. In Together, Bernie becomes one of her special items, and he can fight for her when she's insane.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Her classic pigtail look has been with her since she was a child, seen in her cinematic's flashback story.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Willow was a cute little orphan girl until the night when a Terrorbeak tried to kill her.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Wickerbottom's refresh video indicates that she was working with Maxwell to induct people into the Constant, but at some point, she ended up going there herself and now simply looks to survive. Nobody bares any ill will against her, either, and she bares none to them.
  • Hidden Depths: According to her quotes, Willow was a girl scout and she earned all of the patches.
  • Hot-Blooded: Definitely. Other than liking fire, Willow is impulsive, impatient, headstrong and she prefers dealing with a menace by killing it rather than go hiding. She likes fire, and she has a temper to match.
  • Immune to Fire: She is immune to fire damage.
  • Incendiary Exponent: Setting fire on trees/grass can increase her sanity, as well as give you coal/ashes. Also, her quote shows that she fully agrees with this trope.
  • Kill It with Fire: She will suggest utilizing this method to kill her enemies in the game. She managed to use it to kill a Terrorbeak when she was a child.
"Maybe I could kill it... with FIRE."
    "DIE IN A FIRE!"
  • Mad Libs Catch Phrase: "Stupid X!"
    "Stupid thing needs poop."
    "Eat poop, stupid plant!"
    "Hurry up, you stupid plant!"
    "Stupid flowers. They're almost useless."
    "Stupid bird. Wake up!"
"Stupid rabbits. Come out so I can eat you."
    "Stupid pig!"
    "Stupid boomerang!"
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Willow is a pyromaniac for sure, but fire immunity aside, it's really difficult to tell if she has some kind of pyrokinetic power that she can't (and doesn't want to) properly control — or if she's insanely quick to use her lighter to set fires out of nowhere. The one scene that would answer the question in her cinematic short happens behind a closed door. Come the addition of her skill tree, and it's outright confirmed to be the former.
  • Odd Friendship: With Wilson. An eccentric scientist wannabee and a crazed pyromaniac. Despite their differences, the two are often paired in promotional materials, and are shown to get along well with each other.
  • Playing with Fire: While Willow was always hinted to have some form of control over flames (she's unharmed by them and could even start them at random), the addition of her skill tree casts away any doubts about it and allows her to graduate to a full blown pyromancer. She can make it so that her flames no longer spread, burn longer and deal more damage. Hungry Tinder lets her absorb flames from objects into her lighter and keep them from burning. Her Ember Tender skill is where things start to go crazy, as it unlocks the Embers she needs to start casting her spells, which includes the ability to set enemies on fire, either a single target or in a radius around her; boost her damage against burning enemies, and even create Dwarf Stars. Finally, her affinity skills allow her to either fire out 5 homing shadow flames to strike at enemies if you spec into the shadow side, or a literal flamethrower of blue fire if you spec into the lunar side.
  • Power Incontinence: When Willow has low sanity. she will light up fires out of nowhere. (In Don't Starve Together, she loses this disadvantage.)
  • Pyromaniac: She likes fire and anything that involves fire. The bigger the flames, the better. Everything else is either uninteresting, worthless, or stupid.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: She tends toward this, and can be a stronger example in the hands of a malicious or careless player. Her dialogues are quite juvenile, she carries a teddy bear around (though we don't see it on her in-game until Don't Starve Together), and has no qualms on burning down an entire village. On the other hand, she says upon examining a catcoon stump that she wouldn't burn it while someone lives there.
    • Her origin cinematic reveals that she burned down the orphanage she lived in when she was a child, but it can be justified as she would have died if she didn't.
  • Required Secondary Powers: She's immune to fire damage and resistant to heat, which is quite useful for a pyromaniac.
  • Sadistic Choice: When she was a child, she had to choose between be killed by a Terrorbeak or burn down an orphanage full of people to destroy it and save herself. She chose the latter.
  • Simple, yet Awesome: Thanks to her fire immunity Willow is one of the easiest characters to survive winter with in Don't Starve. You can use the lighter set ablaze items like twigs or grass in your inventory to provide yourself light, warmth and sanity with little cost.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Under Maxwell's orders, Willow started the fire to Wickerbottom's library, resulting in Wickerbottom's subsequent Deal with the Devil to save the knowledge within it and getting dragged into the Constant.
  • Supreme Chef: A minor example. The introduction of the "chef" traits among the survivors made Willow the second-best cook in the Constant after Warly, as they share the perk to cook faster over an open fire and being able to use a lighter to cook.
"Cooking just means sticking stuff in fire."
  • Sweet Tooth: Despite being something cold, she still likes ice cream.
  • Thermal Dissonance: She is immune to fire and resistant to warmth, but she suffers horribly from the cold as a result. She loses more health and sanity when she is freezing, winter gear is less effective, and she takes fewer hits to get frozen by enemies with ice attacks.
  • Vague Age: Some official art makes her look like a child, perhaps intentionally, but some of her lines don't look like they could come from a little girl ("These pigs have questionable taste in architecture", etc). Word of God is that she's in her 'early twenties'.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: In an attempt to defend herself from a shadow monster, Willow apparently somehow managed to ignite an explosion that set the orphanage that she lived in ablaze. While we don't directly see any casualties, we do see one of the women who seem to be running the place put on an expression of horror just before the blast engulfs her, and the other woman who was previously holding Willow's stuffed bear is nowhere in sight when Willow goes to retrieve it once she exits the storage closet. And given that there's no hint or mention as to what happened to the other children in the orphanage, it can be presumed that unless they did something else offscreen, it's likely that they too were caught in the significant blaze that Willow walked away from as she exited the building.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She shares Wilson's attitude towards spiders. However, she is perfectly fine with Webber.
"That's disgusting! I should kill it."
    "EW, KILL IT!"
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: In Don't Starve Together Willow loses sanity faster when she is cold.

    Wolfgang

The Strongman

"I am mighty! No one is mightier!"

"Mind says no. Muscles say yes!"
Voiced by: a tuba

Wolfgang is the second character to be unlocked via experience.

In Don't Starve, Wolfgang has higher maximum health and hunger values than most other survivors. He grows more powerful, dealing more damage to enemies, if his hunger meter is high, and grows weaker, dealing less damage, if his hunger meter is low. He loses sanity faster than other survivors in the dark and when near monsters.

In July 2023 in Don't Starve Together, Wolfgang received a skill tree, allowing him to improve his training and damage against certain enemies.

Wolfgang: EeeeEEeeEEE!!
  • Barbell Beating: His craftable dumbbells can be thrown at enemies for a little damage. His Dumbbell Developer and Heavy Lifter skill tree branch lets him craft more, including an Icebell and Firebell that unleash a freezing blast or flames where they land, along with doubling their damage when all skills are purchased.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Like most of the human male characters, he has these. Just look at his folder image.
  • Big Eater: Has the largest stomach in the game. He needs to be constantly feed so he can keep his strength. Downplayed in his reworked Together incarnation. He still drains massive amounts of hunger to use his Mighty Gym, which is the most reliable way to fill his Might Meter after it drains, but otherwise only requires a normal amount of food.
  • The Big Guy: Typically has the highest base health in the game, and has his already bulky sprite increase with his Mightiness. Not so much when in his wimpy state, though. Exemplified in his gameplay in Together, as a dedicated fighter who uses his great strength to handle bosses and other enemies, or move heavy objects for his friends.
  • Challenge Seeker: When the enemy doesn't scare him he is glad to show it who is mightier.
  • Cowardly Lion: Downplayed. Wolfgang is scared of many things and his sanity drains more quickly than the other characters, but his mighty form makes him one of the strongest fighters in the game.
  • Critical Hit: Not in combat, but when working in his Mighty Form, Wolfgang has a 1% chance per swing to instantly complete the work. His skill tree can buff that chance up to 15%, essentialy letting him decimate most boulders and trees with ease.
  • Dumb Muscle: His text dialogue implies this, but he is still able to create new scientific inventions like any other character.
  • Emotional Bruiser: Wolfgang is a big, burly strongman for sure, but he's quite open about his emotions, and cares for his fellow survivors.
  • Foil: To Wes. Wes is a fragile French Pretty Boy. Despite all of his phobias, Wolfgang is a manly character whose nationality is still unknown.
  • Funny Foreigner: English doesn't appear to be his first language.
  • Genius Bruiser: While his normal dialogue doesn't exactly paint him as a genius, he starts to shade into this when you start doing research with him in-game, and he has a couple of lines that use a more advanced vocabulary than usual.
  • Hates Being Alone: His sanity loss in DST is greater then others when he is alone, but with a follower or another player at his side, it's reduced to a drain closer to a normal character.
  • Heel: His "Shadow" skin in Together appears to be based on this. Subverted with his "Contender" skin.
    "Mightiest Wolfgang is no heel!"
  • Hulk Speak: A lot of his quotes are like this:
    • Referring to himself in third person:
Examining Lucky Beast Head: "Wolfgang will be mighty beast!"
    • Using cruder names for "long" words (in this case, "mushroom"):
Examining Sporecap: "Tall mushy-room looks very bad!"
    • Referring to someone else (in this case Wigfrid) as "adjective-man/lady":
Examining ghost Wigfrid: "World needs stronglady! Wolfgang will get heart!"'
    • Fixation with strength:
Examining Gem Deer: "You stand no chance in fight with Wolfgang!\\"
Examining Florid Postern: "Why door not crumble under mighty Wolfgang punches?"
  • Lightning Bruiser: A Wolfgang in his Mighty form has one of the highest Health (losing only to a highly upgraded WX-78), is the hardest hitting character of the game, he also has a nice 25% speed boost as well. His rework loses this trait and is more a mix of this and Mighty Glacier, with only normal speed.
  • Manly Facial Hair: The strongest of the team, who's even called "The Strongman". He sports a magnificent mustache but for some reason (besides game balance) it never gets overgrown like Wilson's. If you attempt to shave it using a razor, he'll refuse and tell the player that it's too tough to shave it off. It gets bigger the fuller he is.
  • Mighty Glacier: With his rework, Wolfgang becomes more of this, maintaining the same speed as everyone else, and having a fixed, but relatively high health. In exchange, his damage output is more consistent, his hunger isn't quite as severe an issue, and he can wear and carry heavy things without a movement penalty, allowing him to equip the Marble Suit, and can do manual labor faster through brute strength.
  • Muscles Are Meaningful: He's the strongman. His main perks all revolve around his muscles, even in his cinematic. All others look frail in comparison. At least when he's not in his wimpy state.
  • Non-Specifically Foreign: His name is German, but his quotes are all over the place, sometimes suggesting France, sometimes Russia, sometimes some other place entirely. He has art for an unused skin where he's wearing a military uniform from Austria-Hungary.
  • Papa Wolf: Examining Webber's ghost will have him angrily say he will smash whoever squashed the 'small bug boy'.
  • Simpleton Voice: His unique text dialogues mainly consists of simplistic sentences.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His animation reveals him to be responsible for saving William Carter's life in the train crash, and as a result, makes him indirectly responsible for the events of the entire series.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: His body gets more buff if his Hunger meter is above 230, and it gets scrawnier (and his mustache thinner) if his Hunger meter dips below 100.
  • Third-Person Person: Sometimes he uses first-person pronouns, but often he refers to himself in third person, occasionally as "The Mighty Wolfgang".
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Especially when he's well fed. When he's starving, he becomes a skinny weakling.
  • Turns Red: In "The Forge", Wolfgang's perk allows him to access his "Mighty" form at particularly low health.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His refresh video reveals that his circus troupe caused the train crash while trying to get an elephant off the train tracks. Wolfgang himself saved William Carter, being physically empowered by Carter's shadow magic, and from there Carter would go on to become the Amazing Maxwell, leading to just about every event in Don't Starve consequently.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Wolfgang is afraid of the dark. And ghosts. And monsters. And needles. And Wendy.
  • World's Strongest Man: He's the strongest character in game and dresses like a typical strongman.
  • You No Take Candle: Downplayed, but his accent - whatever it is - is very thick, and often leads to strangely formatted sentences.

    Wendy

The Bereaved

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wendy_84.png
"Abigail? Come back! I'm not done playing with you."

"Not all deaths are the same."
Voiced by: an alto flute

Wendy Carter is the third character to be unlocked via experience. She is quite gloomy, despite her brightly colored appearance compared to the rest of the cast.

In Don't Starve, Wendy can summon the ghost of her dead sister Abigail, at the cost of a hefty amount of sanity, to assist her in combat by placing Abigail's fully bloomed flower on the ground and killing a creature near it. She loses less sanity from darkness and monsters, but has less attack power than most other survivors, requiring more hits to defeat monsters on her own.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Abigail's death has left Wendy very morbid and somber. She'll sometimes compare her heart to cold objects.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: She says things in a deep and cryptic way.
  • Broken Bird: Has significant overtones of this due to whatever killed her twin sister. Her character title, "The Bereaved", further suggests it.
  • Cast from Sanity: Post-Nerf, summoning Abigail costs her 50 sanity. This is inverted after her character refresh in Don't Starve Together, where summoning Abigail restores 15 sanity points.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Her quote for the Moon Stone once the Star Caller's Staff has been placed:
Wendy: Perhaps it thirsts for a sacrifice. Where's Webber...
  • Creepy Child: She's around 8-10 years old and has a morbid and deeply unnerving personality.
  • Cursed with Awesome: She's "cursed" to have Abigail haunt her... which equates to having a summon-able ghost familiar aid her in battle.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Abigail's death. As mentioned above, it turned her into a very morbid and somber kid.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Easily one of the snarkiest available characters.
Wendy: (about Pig King) Live it up while you can, Your Majesty.
  • Death Seeker: A few of her comments suggest this.
  • Disability Immunity: Her grief and depression mean she fears darkness and monsters much less than the other characters.
  • Four Is Death: Wendy is the fourth playable character of the Don't Starve and she is able to bring her sister back from the dead.
  • Girlish Pigtails: From the front her hair looks as if it's simply tucked behind her ears, but her pigtails become visible in motion or from other angles.
  • Hidden Depths: She seems to have a secret love of art.
Wendy: (examining Feather Pencil) M... Maybe I'll doodle something... When nobody's looking.
Wendy: (examining Den Decoration Set) I might ask to borrow some colored pencils...
Wendy: (examining Potter's Wheel) That looks... F-Fun...
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Wendy's ghost form in Don't Starve Together is identical to that of Abigail's appearance except with a yellow flower instead of a red one. Normally Wendy's flower is on the left and Abigail's is on the right, but in-game this isn't an effective way to differentiate the twins when they're both ghosts due to the use of Ambidextrous Sprites.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Whenever she's not being pessimistic and darkly poetic, she can be quite snarky.
Wendy: {examining Bio Data) If I'm lucky, it might just bore me to death.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: She and her sister are strongly implied to be the children of Jack Carter, which would make Maxwell their uncle. Her origin cinematic confirmed the information to be true.
  • Necromancer: Her character perk is to bring her sister back to life as a ghost so that she can help her fight. Not playable ghosts are neutral to her in Don't Starve Together, and she is the only playable character who can communicate and help Pipspooks to find their old toys and trinkets again and find peace.
  • Nerf: The "Strange New Powers" Rebalance update did this to Abigail. Rather than automatically being summoned every night, Wendy must now summon her manually, and every summon hits her with a hefty sanity penalty. However, after the update, Abigail stays with Wendy until she is damaged enough, rather than disappearing each morning.
  • Non-Player Companion: Wendy is a girl no older than ten and thus has no experience whatsoever with fighting; as a result, her hits are weaker than the other characters' unless she is assisted by Abigail.
  • Odd Friendship: With Webber, who is her Foil. She's cute-looking but has a somber personality, while Webber is scary-looking but is innocent and childlike in personality. They probably bonded over being the only children in the camp.
  • Potion-Brewing Mechanic: Her character refresh gave Wendy the ability to create special potions to help Abigail fighting.
  • Straw Nihilist: Has very negative views on life, presumably because of the loss of her sister.
  • Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: Her Supernatural skin is one.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She was the Girly Girl to Abigail's Tomboy.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: Abigail's death left Wendy with a very mature understanding of mortality, at a very young age. It's not totally clear if being trapped in the Constant exacerbated matters or if she was always like this, but many of her quotes lean heavily into her Creepy Child tendencies.
  • Undying Loyalty: Even in death, her sister still lingers as a ghost and protects her from harm.
  • Unfinished Business: Wendy can communicate and help young ghosts called Pipspooks to find Trinkets that used to be important for them to obtain Mourning Glory, the key ingredient for her potions.

    WX-78

The Soulless Automaton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wx_78_0.png
"EMPATHY MODULE NOT RESPONDING."

"LIFE IS INEFFICIENT."
Voiced by: a single synthesizer note

WX-78 is the fourth character to be unlocked via experience.

In Don't Starve, despite being a robot, WX-78 still needs to eat food, but unlike the other survivors, they can eat spoiled food without negative effects. They take damage from standing in the rain without protection in the base game, and when they accumulate wetness in the DLC expansions. Being struck by lightning has a chance to "supercharge" them, regenerating their health and giving them a temporary speed boost and light source at the cost of some sanity. Their base stats are lower than all other survivors' stats, but they can upgrade themself by "eating" gears, increasing their maximum health, hunger, and sanity.

As of their rework in Don't Starve Together, they can now augment themself with circuits obtained by scanning entities, as long as they have enough charge to power them.

  • Achilles' Heel: While their circuits have no weaknesses, they require charge. This charge depletes if WX gets too hungry.
  • And Show It to You: Their animated short ends with WX-78 ripping out their freshly repaired Empathy Module and crushing it for good.
  • Boomerang Bigot: Despite their hatred for all organic life, it turns out they were seemingly a human before transferring their consciousness to WX. This revelation may actually be what prompted them to destroy their Empathy Drive for good, as it contained the memories of their creation and the knowledge that they were once organic, Deconstructing and subsequently Reconstructing this trope in the process.
  • Brain Uploading: This is implied to have been the case. As seen in the animated short Disconnect, the point-of-view of a seemingly human WX-78 can be seen putting on a metal hat connected to a hollow robot vessel on a table. They're then seen waking up in the robot's body.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": Their insult of choice towards organics is "fleshlings". They also often use "meatsacks" and occasionally "meatlings".
  • Clockwork Creature: WX's inner workings mainly consist of turning cogs and gears based on their character profile.
  • Companion Cube: WX-78's examination lines for some items (like Wanda's watches) and various structures (such as the Alchemy Engine, or Warly's crockpot) has WX-78 treating the objects like they're people or at least like another sentient robot like themself. Humorously, they seem to think the Science Machine is their mother.
  • Cyber Cyclops: Both their Victorian and Experimental skins are this.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Shipwrecked shows that despite being an Extreme Omnivore, WX-78 really does not like sweet potatoes for some reason even resorting to calling Warly's sweet potato souffle "offensive". It won't stop them from eating one though.
WX-78: (at a cooked sweet potato) THE STARCH AND SWEET FIGHT FOR DOMINANCE AND WX-78 LOSES.
  • Discard and Draw: They only have 6 slots for circuits, so they'll have to choose between them.
  • Eating Machine: For some reason, they need to eat food to survive and heal their wounds just like their human counterparts instead of just recharging their batteries, refueling their engines, and/or repairing their chassis like a typical robot would, although eating does restore their charge.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: They are overcharged by lightning, but they take damage over time when wet.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: They are described in the update post as having a hatred toward living things.
  • Expressive Mask: Seems to have a hard metal exterior with no visible facial articulation mechanisms, but can make the same expressions as any of the human characters.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Downplayed. They can eat stale and spoiled food with no negative effects but they still can't eat food once it rots away.
WX-78: SPOILED FOOD IS STILL FOOD.
  • Foil: They serve as one to Wormwood. WX-78 is a mechanical construct created through science with a hatred for all organic matter, but Wormwood is a sentient plant life created through magic and desires to be friends with everything.
  • Fragile Speedster: They can move at ridiculous speeds with certain bulbs, but their health doesn't benefit from this directly.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: WX-78's character revamp consist into them being able to install expansion modules with varying effects; by watching their animated short it becomes clear that they are installed where their Emphathy Module used to be.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Their near homicidal hatred towards all living matter is Played for Laughs and largely ends up portrayed as either ineffectual or pettiness on WX's part.
WX-78: HAH, IT DIED. CLASSIC HUMAN MISTAKE.
  • Ignored Epiphany: After Winona repaired their broken Empathy Module they have flashbacks of their past, feeling all sorts of emotions. They promptly destroy the module for good.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Their character description in the Curio Cabinet reads ”One might assume WX’s callous nature hides a sensitive soul. One might assume incorrectly.”
  • Killer Robot: Being a robot in a game where survival depends on killing a lot of creatures invokes this. WX's general personality also fits the trope.
  • Lack of Empathy: Almost. According to their character selection quote, they have an empathy module, but it's not working. Though when examining a collection of gears, WX says "OH NO. WHAT HAVE I DONE TO YOU?", suggesting that while they have no empathy for biological creatures, they still have empathy for others of their kind, i.e. mechanical beings. As of their refresh update and animated short, Disconnected, it was fully revealed they still had it but was not in function. They would then destroy it themself once and for all.
  • Laughably Evil: While a machine with a hatred and desire to destroy all organic life, with a dark backstory and some creepy quotes to support it, the rest of the time WX comes off more as a petty jerk than an evil machine. The other survivors seem to, at most, be annoyed by their antics than feel at all threatened by them.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Wagstaff is confirmed to have played a part in creating WX-78, and they share several thought patterns with him.
    Examining Pine Cone:
Wagstaff: My favorite portable Fibonacci sequence.
    WX-78: A PORTABLE FIBONACCI SEQUENCER
    Examining Broken AAC Device:
Wagstaff: Ah. It needs a DR356X001.
    WX-78: OF COURSE IT'S BROKEN, IT'S MISSING A DR356X001
  • Machine Monotone: Their voice is just an electric beep playing one note. Though not noticeable otherwise, if they sing the Starver's Carol in Don't Starve Together, whereas the other characters will sing the notes in tone, WX-78 will just "sing" the notes in the same note throughout.
  • Magikarp Power: Their starting stats are the lowest overall in the game; even lower than Wes, the explicit Joke Character (although they lack the penalties to damage and hunger drain that Wes has). However, they can upgrade themself by eating gears; at max level their stats are the highest in the game. As of DST, this now applies with their upgrades, as there is no penalty for equipping them. There are even some circuits that are flat out stronger versions of others, but require scanning later or riskier creatures to obtain.
  • Morality Chip: As stated in their profile quote, theirs isn't working properly for some reason, making them what they are now. A heart crossed with a giant X in their character profile makes it more obvious. As it turns out, it seemingly just wasn't connected to the rest of WX properly. In "Disconnected," Winona reconnects their Empathy Drive, but WX, after remembering their past and creation, rips the drive out of their chassis and crushes it.
  • My Greatest Failure: Wagstaff seems to think that something went wrong somewhere along WX's development... But WX would beg to differ.
  • No Biological Sex: Presumably, being a robot. WX-78 is referred to as "it" in the first game's narration and when seen on the Nightmare Throne by another character, although death announcements and all of the other characters instead refer to WX with singular "they" pronouns in Don't Starve Together. However, the developers are prone to referring to WX-78 as "he" in patch notes and other behind-the-scenes comments, and both "he" and "they" in live streams. It was stated that the devs refer to Wx as they/them, it can be assumed that recent slip ups are unintentional.
  • No Indoor Voice: Implied by their comments being in all caps.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Word of God has stated, while not specficially intentional on original release, that WX is non-binary. "So that's who WX-78 is, and the WX we try to preserve..." However, their animated short reveals they may not have been fully nonhuman at first after all.
  • No-Sell: Is immune to Poison 24/7, and to Freezing for the duration of System Overload.
  • No Waterproofing in the Future: For such an advanced automaton that can eat food, WX-78 still takes damage over time from being caught in the rain or being in puddles and tides. In DST they take twice as much damage as any other character if they fall into the ocean.
  • Poke the Poodle: Although perfectly capable of violence, WX-78 is also the type that, among other things, thinks picking flower petals is a genuinely evil action to spite organic life.
  • Power Glows: In System Overload, WX-78 will generate light from their body for a temporary period of time.
  • Pride: Constantly boasts about their superiority and the inferiority of organic life.
  • Revenge: They talk about this whenever they kill a creature.
  • Ridiculously Human Robot: They're even human enough to enjoy picking flowers, be afraid of monsters, go insane, etc. Given they were once a human, this may not be so hard to believe.
  • Robot Names: What their name actually stands for is anyone's guess, though in real life, it's a Shout-Out to the RX-78-2 Gundam.
  • Robotic Psychopath: They are very fond of exterminating the life out of organics. Whatever they may be. Also, while everyone else in Together is irritated by Maxwell doing bad things (i.e. attacking others, murdering another character, lighting things on fire), WX-78 seems relieved that there's still some evil in himnote .
  • Robo Speak: Their unique text dialogue mainly consists of these.
WX-78: (seeing a burnt tent) UNSATISFACTORY CONDITIONS FOR REBOOT.
  • Shock and Awe: WX-78 is able to harness the power of electricity to grow stronger, In "The Forge", they also have a chance of shocking any enemy that attacks them and makes contact. They can also equip circuits that make this happen in the normal game as well.
  • The Soulless: Their character title is literally true, in that if they happen to die near a Wortox player in DST, unlike the other characters a soul won't pop out of the body. They do have a ghost, and they don't appear to be troubled or hindered by their lack of a soul.
  • Support Party Member: They can become this with certain circuits that make them give off a positive sanity aura, glow in the dark to ward off Charlie, or increase or lower the temperature around them to counteract winter or summer weather. Ironic considering their personality.
  • Token Evil Teammate: For all of their flaws, the survivors are all ultimately good people trying to survive, even Maxwell. Not WX-78, though, who makes no secret of their disdain for organic life, has interests in world-domination, and generally delights in the suffering and mayhem of the other survivors.
  • Token Non-Human: They were originally this in the base game, being a robot among human characters. That slowly changed as Webber, Wilbur, Wilba, Wormwood, Wortox and Wurt were added. However, they still remain the Token Robot.
  • Unreliable Narrator: It is heavily implied that WX-78 redacted their own biography in order to keep their past hidden. In particular, the biography says that the falling out with Wagstaff was caused by WX-78 trying to secretly make themself more powerful, while in the animated short WX-78 is shown trying to destroy the research that led to their creation and throwing random items at Wagstaff when he tried to stop them.
  • Was Once a Man: It's implied in their animated short Disconnected that they really were a human seemingly willing to forgo their flesh for superior bolts and gears.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Being that it's their weakness, WX-78 is terrified of water and will vehemently express their dislike for it.
WX-78: (seeing a leak on the boat they're riding on) MY WORST NIGHTMARE IS REALIZED.
  • You Are What You Hate: WX-78's Verdant skin in DST has them trading their metal chassis with a more wooden and plant-like exterior. Ironic, given that their disdain for all organic matter is unchanged.

    Wickerbottom

The Librarian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wickerbottom.png
"Shhhh! No talking!"

"Knowledge is power!"
Voiced by: an oboe

Ms. Wickerbottom is the fifth character to be unlocked via experience.

In Don't Starve, Wickerbottom can craft books that give herself buffs at the cost of sanity. She has access to most crafting recipes from the beginning without needing to build a Science Machine, which means she can acquire a spear, a backpack and some other useful items without needing to collect the materials to build one. However, she can't restore sanity using sleeping items, and takes bigger penalties than other survivors from eating spoiled food.

  • Antiquated Linguistics: Of the intellectual kind.
  • Badass Bookworm: Being a librarian, the old lady can pack some punch.
  • Black Bead Eyes: When she does open her eyes in-game, such as during the insanity animation. Until Winona was added, she was the only female character to have them.
  • Captain Obvious: Most of her quotes are quite obvious just by observing. Not that it's bad; you should always know what is going on.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Her no-nonsense attitude slips when confronted with baby beefalo.
Wickerbottom: Look at its widdle face! *ahem*
  • Deal with the Devil: Exploited by Maxwell, who after directing Willow to burn down her library, uses her desire to save it to trick her into the Constant.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: If dark grey hair counts. Concept art suggests she was a redhead in her youth.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Though her character profile shows her with her eyes open. The only times she will open them in-game are when she exiting a wormhole, when she's going insane, and when forced into sleep status by a mandrake.
  • The Insomniac: As of the Strange New Powers update, Wickerbottom can't sleep to restore Sanity.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: The concept art for the Young Wickerbottom skin in Don't Starve Together. Apparently she was an attractive and fashionable redhead in her youth.
  • Last-Name Basis: Referred to as Wickerbottom, which sounds much like a surname, and nothing else. She is also called "Ms. Wickerbottom" by certain other characters and game descriptions.
  • Magic Librarian: By writing books and referring to them as needed, Wickerbottom is able to spend her Sanity to summon lightning from the heavens or tentacles from below, instantly mature surrounding crops, put surrounding enemies to sleep, and call birds. Her origin short reveals her arcane powers are the result of the deal she made with Maxwell, who stored all the contents of her arcane books into her mind as the library was burning down.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: Wickerbottom, as part of her deal with Maxwell to save her burning library, has all of the contents of her arcane books stored in her mind. The strain causes her to pass out, and is likely the cause of her insomnia in game.
  • Never Mess with Granny: One of the oldest playable characters, but she has just as much attack power and health as the average character.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: She's the only playable character (except maybe Wagstaff behind his goggles) whose eyes have both whites and pupils when fully open.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: Goes with her no-nonsense attitude.
  • Scary Librarian: She can make books that can cause crazy things to happen.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: In contrast to Wilson, she is a bookworm who is fond of using advanced terms to express herself.
  • Team Mom: Being the oldest character (with the possible exception of Woodlegs and Wanda at certain times) has some of her dialogue in Together acting like an overprotective mother to the younger ones. This includes giving Wendy and Webber (both children) lessons, instructing some of the older characters in things like reviving the ghost of another survivor, and (in an art stream) preventing Wolfgang from head-on charging Klaus, a boss who could kill him in a few hits.
  • The Smart Girl: She is very well versed. Most of her quotes consist of descriptions, definitions and such that could've been read from a book. She also used to already know all the basic crafting recipes that would be researched with the Science Machine normally, and be able to learn the rest of them one stage earlier than anyone else. After the "Strange New Powers" update, she is able to "self-publish" books which give her Functional Magic.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Just about every time she opens her eyes, most notably when forced to sleep in-game.

    Woodie

The Lumberjack

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/woodie.png
"That's a nice lookin' tree, eh? Not for long."

"Lucy would want me to chop it down."
Voiced by: a cello

Woodie is the sixth character to be unlocked, and the final base game character to be unlocked via experience points.

In Don't Starve, he starts with a talking axe named Lucy, which has infinite durability and chops down trees faster than a crafted axe but deals less damage in combat. However, during a full moon or if he gets carried away cutting down too many trees in a short span of time, he transforms into a Werebeaver that can't carry items, but can see in the dark and is more resistant to damage than his human form, and cut down trees, kill mobs, and mine rocks at super-speed. However, when reverting back to his human form, Woodie's health, sanity and hunger will be low.

In July 2023 in Don't Starve Together, Woodie received a skill tree so he can use both his curse and his experience as a lumberjack more efficiently.

  • Apologises a Lot: Being Canadian. It's out of politeness more than awkwardness or actual remorse.
  • Anti-Frustration Feature: Putting Insight Points on his Transformation Timer branch greatly extends the length of his wereforms, but standing still will eventually increase the drain to the point of it essentialy matching an un-upgraded timer's drain, meaning you won't end up trapped in a particular form for too long if you don't want to.
  • Companion Cube: His axe, Lucy.
  • Cursed with Awesome: See Super Mode below.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: His character short shows that he does not need his Werebeast forms to take down an enemy, though they can be used to perform some useful tricks.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Constantly chews through wood as the Werebeaver, but he can even eat wood as a human.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Although sometimes it shifts into Black Bead Eyes.
  • Fiery Redhead: Subverted. Only when it comes to birds is he hostile, but otherwise he's laid back and loves his axe Lucy.
  • Ground Pound: With the addition of his skill tree, Woodie's two mutually exclusive skills may grant him such abilities. Learning "Werebeaver Mastery" allows him to smash the ground with his Werebeaver form's tail, creating a circular wave of destruction similar to Bearger's stomp (abeit slightly smaller and less damaging to mobs). Alternatively, picking "Weremoose Mastery" changes every third punch of the Weremoose form to an uninterruptible, double-fisted overhead slam which does an impressive 136 damage to all enemies in a small radius.
  • Guilt-Based Gaming: Leaving Lucy behind will result in some sad dialogue from her part from apologizing for whatever she could have said to Please, Don't Leave Me.
  • I Call It "Vera": His talking axe, Lucy.
  • Imaginary Friend: Possibly - it's left ambiguous whether Lucy actually can talk or if Woodie just thinks she does.
Wanda: "Lucy" was it? Oh botheration, now he's got ME talking to it!
  • Manly Facial Hair: Has a beard, but unlike Wilson, he can't shave his off. If you try, he claims "A true lumberjack never shaves!"
  • Meaningful Name: Woodie, and he loves chopping wood.
  • Mighty Lumberjack: He comes complete with a beard and a possessed axe, affectionately named “Lucy” to cut down trees in no time flat.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: His eyes are small and solid white like Wigfrid's, which is visible in some official art and in the Together emotes.
  • Moose and Maple Syrup: He embodies a lot of Canadian stereotypes and will comment on his Canadian-ness if he meets another Woodie in Don't Starve Together.
  • Nice Guy: Even when all alone in a world where Everything Is Trying to Kill You, he remains polite and calm.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: He can turn into a Werebeaver. As a Werebeaver, Woodie is more powerful and has night vision. In the Return of Them expansion of Don't Starve Together, a part of the Moon falling down from the sky caused his curse to get worse by granting him the new forms of the Weregoose (a goose whose only ability is to run around and walk on water) and the Weremoose (a proper combat form).
  • Summon to Hand: In the Forge, Lucy immediately teleports back into Woodie's hands after he throws it at an enemy.
  • Super Mode: Cursed with Awesome with a side of Blessed with Suck. His Werebeaver form deals extra damage, does not need any tool to cut down trees or mine rocks, has night vision, is immune to freezing and overheating, and cannot actually be 'killed' (any damage simply depletes your Log meter, which can be refilled quite easily). On the other hand, he won't be able to hold any items (no Glommer Flower for you), eats almost anything (including saplings, grass and berry bushes), and he will be quite defenseless when it is over.
    • In Don't Starve Together the Werebeaver is somewhat less this trope, since the werebeaver form inflicts a constant sanity drain, can be prolongued but not maintained indefinitely, and is resistant but not immune to extreme weather.
    • His character rework also gave Woodie two new forms. The Weregoose grants Woodie an insane speed boost and the ability to walk on water, which allows him to cover further distances in a small time period; the Weremoose is slightly slower, but it makes up by having the constant damage of a fresh Ham Bat and a good damage reduction that makes this form an excellent choice for combat. Other than that, the Weremoose can also charge to hit a large number of enemies with one attack, but it will stun Woodie if he happens to hit a structure while he is performing it.
  • Talking Weapon: Lucy, his signature axe, speaks to him when equipped and encourages him to chop down trees. However, she will urge him to stop when he's on the verge of becoming a werebeaver.
  • Unbreakable Weapons: Lucy will never break, but is weaker than a regular axe in combat.
  • Verbal Tic: Has "eh?" at the end of a lot of his sentences.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: His character rework gives him this ability to some extent, as Woodie can now craft special idols to transform himself into a Werebeast of his choice. His animated short plays it straight, as Woodie voluntarily changes between all his Werebeast forms and his human form with no help at all.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He hates birds, for some reason.
Woodie: (examing a bird) What a snotty little jerk.
  • You Are What You Hate: Despite his hatred of birds, one of his transformations in Together is a Weregoose.

    Wes

The Silent

"..."

"..."

Wes can be unlocked if he is rescued during Adventure Mode.

In Don't Starve, he has significantly lower stats compared to the other survivors, as well as penalties to damage and hunger depletion, which makes him a good character for players who are looking for a bit more challenge in the game.

The Roseate: "Wes always felt his rosy cheeks were his best features."
  • Born Unlucky: In his short, all of his well-intentioned attempts at helping those around him lead to him being screwed over, culminating in his accidental one-way trip to the Constant. In-game, he is also more likely to be struck by lightning than other characters.
  • Butt-Monkey: Indicated by the description for his animated short.
"Some people just seem to attract more than their fair share of bad luck... and even those people are grateful they aren't Wes."
  • Contrived Coincidence: His entrance into the Constant was purely accidental, with him knocking over the intended kidnapping victim and taking his place while trying to retrieve a little girl's doll, said girl just so happened to be related to the intended victim.
  • Cute Mute: The fact that he is also the weakest and the most fearful does help.
  • Distressed Dude: He is first seen trapped in a jail and musts be delivered to becomes playable.
  • Dude, Where's My Reward?: Unanimously the worst character to play, but also the hardest to unlock. He has a chance to be found in the third chapter of Adventure Mode and must be delivered by fighting waves of Clockworks Monsters. Of course, if you don't encounter him, you have to restart from the beginning.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Underneath an even whiter face paint (on his character profile at least).
  • Everyone Hates Mimes: The mime character is by far the worst one in the game, and therefore also the most prone to being horribly murdered.
  • Foil:
    • To Wolfgang. Wolfgang is a hulking macho man, while Wes is a weak Pretty Boy. They are both foreigners, but while Wolfgang speaks in broken English and his nationality is a mystery, Wes doesn't speak at all and is confirmed to be French.
    • And to Wigfrid too. They're both performers, but whereas she plays a boisterous valkyrie, he's just a humble mime. As for their perks, Wigfrid is a Jack of All Trades who inflicts more damage, receives less damage and whose health and sanity get restored as she fights; Wes instead is a Joke Character who is a terrible fighter and has less hunger with a faster-draining meter.
  • French Jerk: He's dressed up as a stereotypical one in his Triumphant skin.
  • Heroic Mime: Bonus points for being an actual mime.
  • Joke Character: He has lower health, sanity, and hunger than the other characters, deals less damage in combat, depletes his hunger meter more quickly (in single player), and isn't able to properly examine things (he will just remain silent when you try). Wes was introduced by the developers as a way for players who thought the game was too easy to make things more challenging.
  • Joke Item: He has the ability to craft balloons infinitely at the cost of Sanity, which distract monsters.
  • Lethal Joke Character: In "The Forge", in spite of having low health, his ability to draw the aggro and fire of foes makes him extremely useful for distracting enemies while the rest of the party heals, regroups, or focuses on another enemy.
  • The Millstone: He got "promoted" to this in Together, as the fanbase will note that a Joke Character in a multiplayer game is much more irritating than in a singleplayer game. His rework attempted to ameliorate this, giving him unique helpful items he can craft for other players and making monsters more likely to target him than anyone else, while also giving him several new downsides such as even lower stats and increased vulnerability to bad weather.
  • Nice Guy: Wes is selfless to a fault and really wants everyone to be happy, professing in his career as a mime to make people smile. In his bio, it's stated he sticks with the other survivors simply because he wants to cheer them all up and make them happy during such miserable circumstances. This is even what got him in the Constant in the first place; he tried (and initially failed) to cheer people up around the streets, until he eventually saved a man from being pulled into the Constant by accident.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: In Wes' short, his attempts at doing good follows with a series of mishaps at his expense ending with his accidental abduction into the Constant. In the end, he succeeded in making everyone happier that day even if nobody has noticed that he has disappeared entirely.
  • Noodle Incident: What Wes exactly did for Maxwell to be displeased with him (resulting in him being trapped by Clockwork Monsters) went unexplained for several real-world years and is never elaborated upon in the game itself. His character refresh finally reveals the reason why. In trying to rescue a little girl's doll, the mime ended up interrupting Maxwell's attempt at kidnapping his old creditor, George T. Witherstone, taking his place in being trapped in the Constant by complete accident and ruining Maxwell's attempt at revenge.
  • Not Completely Useless: The fact that the balloons serve as a distraction, regardless of their -5 sanity per use penalty, is a plus considering the setting, and the character. Popping the balloons will also do damage, and if a bunch of balloons are together, they pop all at once. This is expanded upon in Don't Starve Together, where he can now make special balloons that grant sanity increases, speed boosts, or protection from drowning, but they don't last long and pop easily.
  • Pretty Boy: Wes is still the resident Joke Character in Don't Starve Together, but most of his skins look fabulous. He is confirmed to be French after all.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Averted. Everybody else in Don't Starve Together who hailed from the original game got an overhaul to make them stronger and more unique, but all Wes ever got was Balloonomancy.
  • Visible Silence: His character profile's quote in the character select menu.
  • The Voiceless: He never says a wordnote . He just pantomimes.
  • Whatevermancy: His exclusive Balloonomancy crafting tab, which just equates to Wes blowing up balloons and making balloon sculptures.
  • Your Mime Makes It Real: He is first seen trapped in an invisible jail which looks more like a pantomime performance at first. As a playable character, the only item he will mime is the paddle used when riding a boat. In one of the pantomime animations he uses instead of dialogue he floats above the ground briefly while pretending to ride a bicycle.

    Maxwell

The Puppet Master

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxwell_0.png
"Freedom suits me."

"Say, pal, you don't look so good. You better find something to eat before night comes."
Voiced by: a harmonium

A mysterious man who 'welcomes' players into the world of Don't Starve and seems to be in control of it. The last level of Adventure Mode strongly implies that he's an Unwitting Pawn of the shadows; freeing him forces the current character being played to take his place, after which he becomes playable.

In Don't Starve, Maxwell has lower health compared to the rest of the cast (75 hit points, compared to the baseline 150), but regenerates sanity constantly and starts out with some formidable equipment.

His original name is William Carter, and he used to be a rather average guy until he found the Codex Umbra.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Maxy" by Charlie, before the events of the game.
  • And I Must Scream: He's been trapped on the Nightmare Throne (which looks pretty uncomfortable, as Wilson points out) in a pitch-black, hellish realm for "an eternity". Also, he's been forced to listen to the same ragtime song on his phonograph the entire time.
  • Arc Villain: Maxwell serves as the main villain of Don't Starve but this is no longer the case in Together when Charlie takes over.
  • Beneath the Mask: He still acts pompous and arrogant in Together, with plenty of rude and insensitive comments aimed at his fellow survivors. Other quotes, however, imply this is all just a facade to mask the immense guilt he feels for causing all of the problems everyone is suffering through. His behaviour in 'Encore'' shows it best, as he looks utterly guilt ridden as he's shown the events that led up to the series.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Like many of the other characters.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Engages in this a few times, such as calling a more-effective-than-flint gold tool "game logic".
  • Chess Motifs: The pieces of the Wooden Thing are usually found in areas known as the chess or Maxwell biome, guarded by Clockwork Knights, Rooks, and Bishops. His prison in the last world also keeps this theme, and he at one point remarks that "even a king is bound to the board".
  • Deal with the Devil: He gave Wilson forbidden knowledge in exchange for building a machine that pulled him into the world of Don't Starve. He also told Wigfrid he could "make the world [her] stage" and "put [her] back in the headlines", with the headline in question being "Star of the Stage Latest in String of Mysterious Disappearances". Webber's quotes in DS and Warly's bio in DST's Compendium also imply he had a role in how they ended up in the Constant as well. It might also be how he ended up there, with his stage assistant Charlie as collateral damage.
    • By his character update, he seems to have entered one with Charlie, her now in his former role. His motivations for taking the deal are, as of now, unclear.
  • Debt Detester: His biography reveals that he feels this way towards Wilson and his baffling choice to save him from the Nightmare Throne.
  • Decoy Antagonist: He starts as the Don't Starve main antagonist. After beating Adventure Mode, he becomes a playable character. In Shipwrecked and Hamlet, there is no core villain. And Together has Charlie as the new ruler of the Constant.
  • Doppelgänger Attack: In the Forge, Maxwell's shadow puppets appear to strike a target after he focuses fire on a single target long enough.
  • Easily Forgiven: In Together, some of the characters are on good terms with Maxwell, even if he is the reason they're trapped in this world. Others are still holding a grudge, Wilson and Willow most of all.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • He's clearly very fond of his assistant, Charlie, even though she's now the Grue and attacks him on sight (the same as any other player character). If he takes damage, he'll protest that she's hurting him and try to jog her memory. He also deeply regrets recklessly dabbling in dark magic to further his magician career, which led to Charlie getting sucked into another world and becoming the Darkness.
    • Unlockable letters show he also has, or at least had, a decent relationship with his brother, Jack, who is the father of twins - Wendy and the deceased Abigail. When Maxwell examines them it makes him wonder how his brother is doing.
    • For some reason, he's good friends with the Ancient Guardian found in the Ruins, and explicitly mourns his old friend's death after you kill the boss.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He is the tallest of any humans and the antagonist. Until he becomes a playable character and his height is changed to the same as everyone else.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: He used to be a struggling stage magician, until he got his hands on the Codex Umbra and started using actual magic in his act.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. While the other survivors are perfectly willing to give him a second chance, some of them are still holding grudges for what he did to them all. Despite that, this behaviour is mostly reserved for jabs at his personality than anything truly malicious.
Wurt: "You the one other scale-less don't like?"
  • Fourth-Wall Mail Slot: He's posted on the Don't Starve site, on a hidden page.
  • Glamour Failure: His Creepy Shadowed Undereyes are a bluer color than everyone else's, and in the character selection screen or when using the yawn emote, his Survivor skin has fangs similar to the ones in his monster form near the end of Adventure Mode.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Is seen holding a cigar when he greets the player character at the start of Survival mode, though he doesn't have it in Adventure mode or as a playable character.
  • Grumpy Old Man: While not the oldest around by far, he definitely plays into this sometimes. He even has a Scrooge inspired skin.
  • The Heavy: He has more lines than any other character, if you count Lucy as being separate from Woodie. He also plays the biggest role in the lore, and it was his actions that kicked off the entire plot.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: He started off as well meaning, but the stress garnered from reading into the Codex Umbra lead to his grasp on sanity loosening, until he eventually became the Shadow Creatures' puppet. Once rescued, he's able to put aside his hatred of Wilson and the other survivors to survive in a dangerous new Constant under Charlie's rule... but "Encore" shows he's not above returning to the dark side for more power when Charlie offers it. Although his overall behaviour in the animation implies otherwise.
  • Humanoid Abomination: He Was Once a Man and still looks like one but it's clear he's something more now. It's just not clear what.
  • Keeper of Forbidden Knowledge: He clearly knows a lot more about what's going on than both Wilson and the other survivors (including Wickerbottom) and the players themselves (including a person playing him), but is refusing to say much about it, due to it all being highly lore-significant stuff. He probably gained a lot of this knowledge from reading the Codex Umbra and his time on the Nightmare Throne.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He becomes this after being freed from the Nightmare Throne, while most of his dialogue has him coming off as haughty as he once was when he sat upon the throne, every now and then the façade cracks and it becomes clear that he regrets the things he's done that have brought him and the people around him to this point in time.
Maxwell: Truthfully I was always a hack.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Twice over.
    • Maxwell was a failing stage magician who turned to dark magic to boost his own popularity, regardless of the consequences. His reckless dabbling with it got both him and his stage assistant, Charlie, stuck in another world and unable to return home. What's more, Charlie had turned into the Night Monster, viciously attacking Maxwell in the dark despite his pleas for her to remember him. By the "A New Reign" update, Charlie had taken the Nightmare Throne and become a host for "Them", becoming a threat far dangerous than Maxwell himself would ever be.
    • Maxwell was also responsible for getting many of the player characters trapped in the same world he was whisked away to, whether through Faustian deals or straight-up kidnapping them — presumably so they could help free him from the Nightmare Throne. He eventually does get his wish, but with Charlie having seized the Nightmare Throne, Maxwell is now forced to work with the very people he tormented in order to stop her, some who understandably hate his guts like Wilson. In the base game, the player can choose to turn on the phonograph after initially turning it off so he'll have to keep listening to the same ragtime song again, prompting this response: "I suppose I deserved that."
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Don't Starve Together makes it clear that Maxwell got off the Nightmare Throne and is now a playable character from the beginning.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: He wears a very sharp pinstriped suit, or, in adventure mode, a blue fur coat. Presumably he regenerates Sanity because of his dapper clothes.
  • Me's a Crowd: With the Codex Umbra, he can create shadow clones to do his bidding. Each one he makes takes a chunk off his maximum sanity.
  • Mirror Character: With Wilson, in regards to how they ended up in the current world; after experiencing an all-time low in their lives, both started dabbling with unknown forces that they shouldn't have touched. Either Maxwell didn't know about this, or he didn't care.
  • The Mole: "Encore" implies that he and Charlie are working together once more... with Maxwell becoming evil again.
  • Mundane Utility: Maxwell's shadow puppets, made from the very essence of nightmares, are extremely useful when harvesting resources. Maxwell also thought it would have been the best idea to use the Codex Umbra for use in his magical act.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: When first greeting the player and in Adventure Mode, he is much thinner and taller than the player characters, but when becoming a playable character, his appearance is drastically changed to fit more with the standard height of the other characters. The Don't Starve Together cinematics and menu art have used both designs.
  • Odd Name Out: He is the only playable character without a name starting with W. Subverted as his real name is actually William Carter...and an M is really just an upside-down W anyway, so that name is still having fun with the pattern.
  • Pet the Dog: He has his moments. See Even Evil Has Loved Ones.
  • Power at a Price: The downside of his demonic powers is that the shadow creatures keep him trapped on the Nightmare Throne. He knows it, and deeply regrets what his dabbling in dark magic did to Charlie.
  • Promoted to Playable: From antagonist NPC to unlockable playable character. He fits the bill.
  • Pungeon Master: He's pretty fond of puns in his dialogue. Maxwell can give Wilson and some of the other characters a run for their money. Some examples:
(at a Moleworm) Are you picking up what I'm putting down? Do you dig it?
(attacking a charged Volt Goat) Chaaarge!
  • Satan: Or at least very close to it. A hidden image even has him offering an apple to a starving Wilson. The imagery isn't lost on the others as well. For laughs, when Maxwell let the other survivors pick a Halloween costume for him, they chose to dress him up as a Krampus.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: After being removed from the Nightmare Throne his rivalry with Wilson turns into this; past the fistfight in Cyclum they don't try to do anything worse than passive-aggressive mockery and foisting chores onto each other.
  • Slashed Throat: When examining a razor:
Maxwell: If only the world had a single neck.
  • Squishy Wizard: As a playable character, his sanity regeneration lets him use magic without much fear, and his health is extremely low compared to any other character's.
  • Stage Name: Maxwell is not his actual name. It was the name he used while he was a stage magician in California.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Wilson during the events of the Cyclum Puzzle comics and Don't Starve Together.
    • Character quotes from Together show that he gets along with (and actually kind of likes) WX-78 the best, and is worst off with Woodie, who still clearly doesn't like him much (and is only willing to revive him as a ghost because Lucy, who is a bit more forgiving, said so). Willow also continues to make a lot of jabs at him, and Winona seems to have not entirely forgiven him for dragging her little sister into the Constant. However, Wolfgang and Wigfrid regard him as a friend and ally.
  • That Man Is Dead: Not stated directly but the eyes and name of William Carter slowly being removed from all shown pictures/letters implies that either his Maxwell persona or the shadows don't like his past self very much.
  • Theme Naming: Think it's odd that he's playable when he doesn't have a W in his name? Consider that his original name was William. Also a "W" flipped upside down becomes an "M". In the in-game files, he's referred to as Waxwell to differentiate himself from the Maxwell NPC.
  • Tome of Eldritch Lore: The Codex Umbra, which lets him summon shadow clones of himself.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In Together, many of his dialogue lines are much softer and contain mentions of the other survivors that are milder and more respectful than anything his single-player self says, for instance finding the statues of himself scattered around the world embarrassing in hindsight. Most of the others in turn have kinder words to say about him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: For "Them".
  • Villainous Breakdown: Starts out smug and composed, but begins losing his composure as the player progresses through adventure mode. He also becomes much more monstrous in appearance.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Disconnecting him from the Nightmare Throne causes him to cry out in joy — whereupon he promptly screams and disintegrates, likely due to his advanced age. Subverted once the player character gets put on the Nightmare Throne; it will cut to Maxwell waking up and saying "Free at last!" and if you decide to remove the player, the same thing happens but with the roles switched.

    Wagstaff

The Cryptic Founder

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wagstaff.png
"Eureka! My destiny awaits!"

"Theoretically, it could be my Aunt Velma."
Voiced by: some kind of whistle, possibly a train or factory one

Robert Wagstaff is the 10th playable character of Don't Starve, added to the roster in 2019 along with the Hamlet DLC but as a part of the vanilla game. Before then he was already known for being the founder of the Voxola Radio Company, the inventor of the Voxola PR-76 radio featured both in the Wilson's origin cinematic and in game as a component of the Divining Rod, and the boss of Winona from Don't Starve Together.

As a playable survivor in Don't Starve, thanks to his skills as inventor, Wagstaff has access to a unique Tinkering tab in the crafting menu, where he is able to create everything from visors that allow him to see in the dark and shoot fireballs at enemies to teleportation devices. He's nearsighted, and anything not right next to him will be blurry and impossible to make out unless he is wearing goggles, preventing him from wearing other headgear. Despite having a larger hunger maximum than most other survivors, he has a sensitive stomach, and takes a small amount of damage when eating raw or dried food. And, the more health he loses, the more it becomes clear that there might be something really wrong with him.

In Don't Starve Together, he appears as the Grainy Transmission, asking assistance from the other player characters to help him in his experiment with the Lunar Siphonator to stop the moonstorms and defeat the Celestial Champion.

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Wagstaff is shown applying this trope several times in his quotes. Often overlaps with Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness.
    "A pelt of pabulum properties!"
    "Glorious! A grasping gargantuan appendage!"
"Buttery bounty of a berry blintz!"
  • Absent-Minded Professor: He is fascinated by everything in the Constant, including dangerous creatures that want to murder him. Luckily there are armors for examining them more closely.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The fact that he shows up as merely a holographic projection in Don't Starve Together, and had such a trait all the way back in his playable appearance in the single-player version, strongly implies wherever he ended up, he's not actually in the Constant. The end of Wilson's rework short implies, and the Host of Horrors video confirms, that he has somehow escaped the Constant and is now residing in Wilson's home, aka his old workshop, and is now projecting himself from there.
  • Astral Projection: Wagstaff uses a technological version of this trope. He's actually back in Wilson's old home, and is projecting himself as a hologram into the Constant in order to do his research.
  • Badass Normal: Wagstaff has no special abilities, but he uses his ability as inventor to create some useful gadgets to survive.
  • Bastard Understudy: An interesting example. Wagstaff studied about They and Their magic, but he never had any direct interaction with Them. They never summoned him to the Constant, he came in by building a portal on his own.
  • Because Destiny Says So: A firm believer of this. But he fails to realize that he is The Unchosen One.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Way bigger than his eyes, for sure. Unless he puts on goggles and they become hidden.
  • Blind Without 'Em: When he's not wearing goggles, anything more than arm's reach away is just a blur.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Wagstaff notices that time flows differently and many other weird things that happen in the Constant.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Before getting into the Constant he was an eccentric, yet accomplished inventor.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He was mentioned for the first time by the game developers in 2013, with little to no evidence suggesting his actual existence as a character in the game (except for his surname starting with a W). Then Winona, one of his employees, joins the crew in Don't Starve Together in 2017. Cue 2019 and Wagstaff himself joins the roster.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Wagstaff worked all his life to reach to Constant, and he studied it to the point he knew about Charlie, the Nightmare Fuel and the Throne before he directly saw them. His researches were so well known that Winona got herself hired into his company so she could gain access to them to save her sister Charlie.
  • Continuity Nod: Winona, WX-78, and Maxwell recognize Wagstaff when he finally appears in Don't Starve Together, as they are his former employee, one of his creations, and the one person who greeted him in the Constant respectively. Winona is compelled to help him, WX-78 acts like a Tsundere and begs their "sister" not to trust him, and Maxwell seems to have understood his intentions and he thinks Wagstaff is a fool.
    • Webber's spider half also seems to recognize Wagstaff, and is hesitant about helping him ("Should we help him? I don't mind, but he's not so sure..."). The animated short accompanying Webber's character refresh later revealed that Wagstaff had captured the spider and taken it from its home in the Constant to be studied by Webber's father.
  • Cool Old Guy: He is nearsighted and he suffers from an intestinal disease, but he is still surviving in the Constant on his own.
  • Creating Life: He mentions some attempts to create an automation in his character quotes. It is heavily implied that the automation in question is WX-78.
  • Ditzy Genius: He is a genius and one of the craziest characters in the game.
  • Einstein Hair: Fitting for a mad scientist.
  • Energy Weapon: His Fryfocals allow him to shoot laser beams at his enemies.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Wagstaff is just referred to as "Grainy Transmission" by the other characters when he appears in Don't Starve Together. This is defied if playing as Winona, who will be the only character to refer to him by name. WX-78 presumably knows his name due to their history together, but refuses to say it due to a personal grudge.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Slightly amoral and reckless with his experiments he may be, but whatever it was WX-78 planned when they were still working together, combined with their increasingly eratic behaviour, was too much even for Wagstaff to condone. He would eventually choose to burn away all of WX-78's work and banish them to the Constant.
  • Eyes Always Shut: When he is not wearing his Spectoggles. Justified because he is severely nearsighted and he needs them to see.
  • Fearless Fool: He loves everything about the Constant, no matter how dangerous or crazy it is.
  • Foil: To Wilson Higgsbury and William Carter: they were two idealistic young men who tried to pursue success with their field of expertise only to fail, be tricked by Them and to get dragged into the Constant against their will. Robert Wagstaff instead is an idealistic old man already recognized as a successful inventor whose ultimate goal was to reach the Constant all along, even though he wasn't chosen by Them.
    • And to his employee Winona: she is a Workaholic no-nonsense gal, Wagstaff instead is a crazy old Cloudcuckoolander.
    • Don't Starve Together adds also a new foil in Walter, a young Canadian boy scout who loves outdoorsy life and is as fascinated as Wagstaff by the monsters living in the Constant.
    • He becomes one to Charlie as of the From Beyond updates. Charlie is involved with the shadows, Wagstaff with the moon. Both get you to perform some tasks for them that further their agendas, but while Charlie only shows up once and stays unseen, Wagstaff is a common sight who frequently interacts with the player.
  • Freaky Is Cool: His life philosophy in a nutshell.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: A skilled inventor able to create special visors and even teleportation devices. He's also implied to be the creator of WX-78.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: He can upgrade his Spectoggles so they are not limited just to give him a better vision. Even the base version of them is useful, as the Spectoggles allow Wagstaff to analyze Peculiar Objects and to locate hidden traps.
    • Goggles Do Nothing: All the other characters in the game are unable to use the Goggles without experiencing Wagstaff's nearsighted vision.
  • Hero of Another Story: For years no one had any idea of what happened to him after his factory burned down. Then he was released as a character in Don't Starve, revealing that he wanted to reach the Constant, and he did it without Maxwell's help. And for some reason, some pieces of the technology he created can be found around in the Constant.
    • Don't Starve Together takes it to a whole new level as he appears again as an NPC requiring the help of the other survivors to assemble a new machine that causes the Celestial Champion to fall onto the Constant.
  • Idiot Ball: His obsession with the Nightmare Throne is what brought him into the Constant.
  • Teleportation: His Telebrella can allow for a short range teleport to the nearest telipad, but it stops working if you're out of range, as indicated by the green light on top. Unless you get struck by lightning while wielding it.
    • As the Grainy Transmission in Don't Starve Together, Wagstaff can freely pop in and out of existence anywhere he pleases, appearing wherever a Moonstorm has formed, and disappearing once the job is done. He can bring bigger things with him as well, such as the Lunar Siphonator when you defeat the Celestial Champion.
  • Jumped at the Call: He was not supposed to be in the Constant, but he loves it anyway.
  • Last-Name Basis: Because every character has a name that starts with W, he is referred to by his surname instead of Robert.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: His character quotes reveal that he never talked to Maxwell before reaching the Constant, but the fact he greeted him when he arrived and the statues he found during his explorations made him realize he was someone important. And because of this he decided that he wanted to meet him in person.
    • Inverted in Don't Starve Together. In Return of Them it is revealed that Wagstaff is still around and experimenting on his own, and he appears as an NPC because he didn't join the survivors' group. His latest creation, assembled thanks to the help of the other survivors, caused the Celestial Champion to descend on the Constant to be challenged by the survivors.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He is heavily implied to be WX-78's creator.
  • The Maker: He was already known as the creator of the PR-76 Radio, but his quotes reveal that he also created the Throne Room's Gramophone (model ML-77) and potentially WX-78.
  • Night-Vision Goggles: The Infroggles variant of his goggles. He modified them to catch a glimpse of Charlie.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He wants to meet Charlie in person and sit on the Nightmare Throne.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He looks oddly more detailed than any other characters. Even his portrait seems out-of-place.
  • Ominous Visual Glitch: When his health gets lower he starts glitching.
  • Picky Eater: Justified as he suffers from some kind of disease. He needs to cook his food first so he can eat it with no health penalty.
  • The Pollyanna: He reacts with childish enthusiasm to everything that happens to him.
  • Red Herring Shirt: He was well known by the fandom because he was mentioned as the mysteriously disappeared inventor of the radio used by Maxwell to communicate with Wilson. It took six years to finally see him in the game and have his story and motives revealed.
  • Right Man in the Wrong Place: The Constant doesn't seem to take Wagstaff's presence well as he starts to glitch whenever his health is low.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Sometimes he falls into this, but he is not as bad as Wickerbottom.
  • Shared Family Quirks: While really a creator and creation relationship, both him and WX-78 describe a pine cone as a "portable Fibonacci sequence".
  • Skewed Priorities: He wants to have a closer study of deranged creatures that want to eat his face off. Including Charlie.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: In the form of a pair of Spectoggles that he can modify into a helmet (Visor), night-vision goggles (Infroggles) and a headgear that shoots laser beams (Fryfocals).
  • Soap Opera Disease: Downplayed. He suffers from a stomach disease that causes him to lose 3 HP from every raw food he eats (but he still gets healed by the curative raw food, minus 3 HP). Played straight when he starts to glitch after losing enough HP.
  • Spanner in the Works: Given his backstory he might become one for Them in the future.
  • Teleportation Spam: With a modified umbrella.
  • Theme Naming: Robert Wagstaff. It was one of the reasons the fandom realized he would be playable one day.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He is glad to be into the Constant despite all the horrors who inhabit it. But wanting to claim the Throne is what really puts him in this territory.
  • The Unchosen One: He thinks that his destiny is to sit on the Nightmare Throne... but it was actually Wilson's to take Maxwell's place on it, and there is no indication that Wagstaff's presence in the Constant was wanted by Them.
  • Unseen No More: After years of being name-dropped and referenced he eventually appeared as a playable character in singleplayer. Then again in Don't Starve Together as a mysterious NPC.
  • The Unsolved Mystery: Wagstaff disappeared the same day the Voxola factory mysteriously burned down. Next of Kin reveals the factory's fire was caused by Wagstaff's portal device, which was how he and Winona ended up in the Constant.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
    • All the people who actually sat on the Nightmare Throne can tell him why taking their place is a really bad idea.
    • In a straighter example, his experimentations with the Constant's creatures caused the string of events that led to Webber becoming the spider/human fusion they are today, having somehow brought one from the Constant for Webber's father to experiment on.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: If you consider him WX-78's father they fall into this.
  • Walking Spoiler: He was already known by the fandom for being the creator of the radio used as a component of the Adventure Mode's Divining Rod and Winona's boss. His actual introduction in the game reveals that it was only the tip of the iceberg.
  • Wham Episode: Robert Wagstaff never met Maxwell before reaching the Constant. He reached that dimension with no help at all to study the creatures who live in there, the Nightmare Fuel and to sit on the Nightmare Throne. However something seems to have gone wrong as the Constant seems to consider him a glitch in the Matrix.
Examining the Nightmare Throne: "I've found it! The portal that can link worlds! The throne of ultimate power!!"
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Wagstaff really wants to make the world a better place, and he doesn't care if The End of the World as We Know It is the price to pay for it to come true.
  • Wild Card: Wagstaff himself is cheerful and adorable, but he is also a crazy person whose motives and final goals can be described only as "epically stupid" and/or "morally questionable". And the fact that he is heavily implied to be WX-78's creator does not help the question either.
    • He continues to play this trope as an NPC in Together, as he acts as essentially his own faction, with his own plans that go against Charlie's and the Shadow Creatures', and often screwing over the other survivors in the process.
  • The Wonka: Despite his weirdness he owned a factory and is a talented inventor.

Introduced in Reign of Giants

    Wigfrid

The Performance Artist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wigfrid_resized.png
"All the wörld's a stage. För me!"

"Valhalla awaits!"
Voiced by: a very processed brass horn

An actress playing the role of a Valkyrie. She's considerably combat-oriented, having higher strength and defense as well as regenerating Health and Sanity with each kill. However, she refuses to eat anything other than meat, and she has slightly lower Sanity and Hunger.

  • Action Girl: Fighting increases her sanity due to her excitement to do it.
  • The Bard: Her character refresh in Together gave her the ability to craft unique songs she can sing when she in combat, each of them with a unique effect upon herself, her allies and her enemies. She can stack up to three different effects.
  • Blood Knight: To the point that she gets healthier the more she kills.
  • Blush Stickers: Combined with freckles.
  • Brawn Hilda: Though skinnier than most examples of this trope, thanks to the game's artstyle.
  • Cool Helmet: Her warrior helmet. It even has wings!
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Her voice can best be described as an erratic horn but her sneeze is adorable!
  • Does Not Like Spam: Although she won't eat anything that's not meat, she has a particular distaste for mushrooms.
  • Fiery Redhead: Is very eager to fight, and often refers to herself as a passionate warrior.
  • Foil: To Wes. They are both performers, and while he is a humble, weakling mime, she plays a boisterous valkyrie who knows how to pack a punch for real.
  • Heävy Mëtal Ümlaut: Upön every öccasiön where Wigfrid vöices wörds which cöntain the letter Ö in them, every single Ö will find itself the pröud pössessör öf twö döts flöating aböve it. There's a setting specifically allowing players to turn it off in the game menu.
  • Hot-Blooded: Well, she is an actress performing as a warrior...
  • Jack of All Trades: Wolfgang is stronger on a full stomach, Woodie is more resistant when transformed, Maxwell constantly regenerates sanity, and Wortox can recover more health by dropping souls. However, Wigfrid is the only character with bonuses to all four characteristics.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: The fact that she charges willy-nilly into the Ancient Gateway while everyone else in the group is hesitant about running into strange portals more or less cements this. The resulting expression on Wilson's face pretty much sells it.
  • Lost in Character: This 'performance artist' will steadfastly remain 'performing' as a battle-hungry Viking shieldmaiden, every moment of every day for as long as you're able to keep her alive. Wigfrid could give Kirk Lazarus a run for his money.
Whoever Wigfrid was before her titular role has been lost to time, and the power of method acting.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Wigfrid" is the name of the Valkyrie character portrayed by the actress, who herself has never been named. Willow does mention in DST that there's a name scratched into the inside of her helmet, which is likely the actress's, but she can't seem to read more than the initial W.
  • Picky Eater: She refuses to eat anything that isn't meat (with a few exceptions in Together), which can prove detrimental as she cannot benefit from the bonuses granted by certain non-meat recipes. She does eat Crock Pot dishes that require both meat and vegetables, but nothing without a meat component. She complains a lot about gardening in Don't Starve Together since she has no interest in the resulting fruits and vegetables. This was a major hindrance in Hamlet until the Meated Nettles dish was added, because every other hayfever-relieving food was vegetarian and her only other option was to wear a gas mask throughout most of lush season.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: Fitting with her Valkyrie persona and Tomboyish personality, she eats meat dishes exclusively — vegetables are not a food fit for warriors. The only plant she'll eat is 'Leafy Meat.'
  • Sweet Tooth: Downplayed and implied. The only two non-meat foods she'll eat are Jellybeans and Taffy in Together.
  • White-Dwarf Starlet: Her backstory. She was a promising performer whose debut as a Valkyrie stunned audiences and catapulted her to stardom. Unfortunately, it was a Tough Act to Follow and Wigfrid never managed to recapture the charm of that first act. This lead her to slowly fade to irrelevance while retreating into the memory of her Glory Days, until the day Maxwell made an offer...
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: What happens to mobs she kills.

    Webber

The Indigestible

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/webber.png
"We're always together, and never alone!"

"Spiders understand us."
Voiced by: a synthesizer that's possibly being dropped down a flight of stairs

A young boy who has been eaten by a spider causing him to merge with it into a monstrous hybrid. He has characteristics of both human and monster, being able to eat monster food, befriend spiders, and has slightly higher physical attributes compared to most characters. However, not only does he have the mind of a kid (and thus can't take many hits to his Sanity), most mobs that are usually befriendable will instead attack him on sight.

  • Animals Hate Him: Pigs, Bunnymen, Catcoons, Wildbore, Ballphins, and Pogs (who would otherwise be neutral) are all hostile to Webber. Spiders are this kid's only friends.
  • Back from the Dead: He is unlocked by finding his skull and burying it in an open grave. Lightning will strike the grave and revive him.
  • The Beast Master: Can become this for spiders. He even starts with spider eggs to create a spider den.
  • Breakout Character: His popularity among the fandom due to his unusual nature and cuteness has lead to him being frequently featured in promotions, and he was one of the first characters from the DLCs to be added to Together.
  • Breakout Mook Character: Although he's only half Spider, he's still the closest thing to a playable version of the Spider enemy. Additionally, the spiders themselves become friendly when playing as him.
    • Don't Starve Together amplifies this, as Webber's perks get some significant buffs; tamed Spiders will follow Webber until he dies or disconnects, he can pick them up and transform them into more powerful variants by feeding them treats, and he gains the ability to sleep in Level 3 Spider Dens like a Tent.
  • Buffy Speak: Uses childlike terms for some items, such as calling Manure and Phlegm "Doodoo" and "Boogies", respectively.
  • Cheerful Child: Despite his situation, he seems to be taking it all in stride as he's one of the more nicer characters in the game, who's managed to endear himself to the other survivors, including noted arachnophobes like Wilson and Willow. Maxwell says it best:
Maxwell: "This child doesn't have a mean bone in his body."
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Webber can create special "Switcherdoodles", cookies that can transform Spiders into their more stronger variants. The key ingredient Webber uses to make these cookies however, is Monster Meat. Any other survivor that tries to consume these cookies will get a negative hit to their health and sanity.
  • Creepy Good: After his transformation, Webber is a monstrous looking fusion of boy and spider, with scraggly fur and a maw full of teeth. He may be part spider and frightening-looking, but he is one of the more innocent, sweet characters.
  • Crutch Character: Webber possesses a relatively stable early game as his easy access to meat, silk, and spider glands for healing, as well as using Spiders as allies to keep himself safe from other mobs will ensure easy survibality through your first winter when you play your cards right. However, on later stages of the game, Webber struggles against certain boss mobs due to his lower maximum Sanity and the fact that most boss mobs have large area-of-effect attacks that essentially renders mass Spider allies useless. This makes it more difficult for him to explore the whole world effectively on his own compared to other characters. Webber's character refresh remedies this somewhat by giving him special items that allow him to transform Spiders into stronger variants and giving him additional abilities.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: He's one of the sweeter characters but he essentially sounds like a demonic piano in a trash compactor. During an official stream, a fan once asked the developers whether he was voiced by a synthesizer falling down a flight of stairs; the answer was "Maybe."
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Apart from his appearance and understandable hatred of certain normally-friendly creatures (mainly pigs, which try to kill him), he's actually a pretty sweet kid.
  • Easily Forgiven: Webber doesn't show any resentment towards the spider that he was eaten by and (somehow) fused with, instead treating him as a friend and ally.
  • Extreme Omnivore:
    • He is able to eat poisonous items without damage, although he'll complain about it.
    • Prior to an update, he was the only character who could eat Pig Skin and Bunny Puffs and other items deemed "horrible" by the game which are edible by carnivorous mobs (including spiders) but not normally by players.
  • The Faceless: In his short, Webber's human face is never shown. The most we see are his eyes, which are white.
  • Foil: To Wendy. Wendy looks cute, but has a somber and creepy personality. Webber looks like a humanoid spider, but is innocent and sweet.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Spider: Webber is probably the nicest playable character in the game, despite effectively being a Monster Lord to the most numerous hostile mobs in the game.
  • Fusion Dance: Performed one with the spider that tried to eat him, somehow. Whatever happened, it resulted in him becoming the hybrid between boy and spider he is today. His short implies this happened due to whatever Wagstaff did to bring the spider from the Constant.
  • Giant Spider: He is treated as a kid-sized spider by other mobs and has some spidery traits.
  • Guest Fighter: He makes an appearance in Cult of the Lamb, unlocked the same way that he is in his original game.
  • The Heart: Webber's kindhearted and polite demeanor seems to have endeared him to most of the other survivors. Even Wilson, Willow, Winona and Wolfgang, noted arachnophobes, are shown to not have any problems with him, bar some nervousness from Wolfgang that quickly dissipates the moment Webber's in danger. His friendship with Wendy also tends to bring out her softer side.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: He's merged with a spider which tried to eat him long ago. And some of his quotes suggest that the spider's mind is still intact.
  • Living Body Suit: He looks like a human-shaped spider. Unlike the usual use of this trope, Webber seems to mostly be in full control, as his behavior and speech suggest.
  • Mind Hive: He alternates between using "I" and "We", depending on whether he's referring to just himself or his spider as well. Some of the quotes appear to be said by the spider instead of the boy.
"Sandwich for me[boy], frog legs for him[spider].
    "He[spider] likes the fish heads. I[boy] don't.
"We could be good at football, much better than I[boy] was!"
    "I[spider] can't read, but he[boy] can."
  • Monster Lord: Downplayed in Don't Starve, but in full effect come Together. Webber can easily amass a horde of Spider minions to follow him into battle, including very dangerous variants like Warriors and Nurses; he's also the only character in the game to be NEUTRAL to a boss mob, the Spider Queen.
  • Odd Friendship: With Wendy, presumably over being the only children in the camp. He once gave her a friendship bracelet, and plenty of quotes between the two show they play together frequently.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In the Hamlet DLC, Webber gains access to the "Shamlet Mask", a pair of sunglasses and fake mustache that somehow keeps pigs (and other neutral mobs that attack spiders, such as the Mants and Pogs) from mistaking you for a monster. Unfortunately, this also fools his fellow spiders who will attack him on sight until he takes the disguise off.
  • Parental Neglect: Though it's implied that he wasn't always so and it wasn't out of malice, Webber's father became fully caught up in his studies of the spider Wagstaff provided him, locking himself away in his lab and ignoring his son. This eventually led to Webber acting out for attention, releasing the spider, and subsequently becoming fused with it.
  • Pest Controller: Webber can amass a large following of Spiders, including the ones found in the caves. Bonus points for also being half-spider himself.
  • Pungeon Master: This kid has puns galore.
    "Marbelous protection!"
    "Wood you like to fight?"
  • Stock "Yuck!": When examining carrots, he'll say that he sort of misses being forced to eat them. It doesn't stop him from eating them though.
  • Swallowed Whole: It didn't work.
  • Time-Passage Beard: Despite his young age, he grows a silky "beard"note  as time goes on. It works just like Wilson's beard, but silk drops when it's shaved and it isn't as insulatory.
  • Vocal Dissonance: See Cute, but Cacophonic. It's worth noting that despite being a child, he has one of the deepest voices amongst the characters.
  • Voice of the Legion: Though, like the other characters, his "voice" is just a series of musical notes, they fit this description.
  • Was Once a Man: And once a spider. Then the latter ate the former, and they became... whatever it is that Webber is now.

Introduced in Shipwrecked

    Walani

The Unperturbable

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/walani_7.png
"Forgive me if I don't get up. I don't want to."

"If I was on my surfboard I could catch you!"
Voiced by: an out-of-tune ukulele

Walani is a relaxed and mildly lazy surfer. She starts out with her own surfboard with a 1.5x faster sailing speed than a raft and has the ability to dry off quicker. Surfing over a wave will grant her 1 sanity point. While her health is low she has a large hunger meter which can compensate for her faster hunger drain. Walani can also ride more sizes of waves, unlike all the other characters.

  • Big Eater: Has a larger Hunger meter than most characters, and it drains 10% faster.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Downplayed. She's so skilled at surfing she can ride bigger waves and control it with ease. Yet her attitude remains chill.
  • Foil: To Winona, who's a Workaholic no-nonsense gal, meanwhile Walani's a laidback Outdoorsy Gal who's not a fan of lifting a finger. They're both still very skilled at what they love doing.
  • Fragile Speedster: Her Surfboard only has 100 HP, even lower than the flimsy Rafts that are available from the start. It is also the fastest watercraft in the game without sails and is an all around reliable vessel from its speed alone, even when stronger boats become available for her.
  • Hidden Depths: According to a few of her quotes, it's suggested she may have formerly been a pirate or involved in a nautical crew, resolving to be more of a 'lover than a fighter'.
  • Mellow Fellow: Alongside her title "The Unperturbable" a lot of quotes strongly indicate this, some bordering on stereotypical hippy-comments. This isn't just for characterization either; gameplay wise, Walani will lose Sanity at a slightly slower rate than the other characters.
  • Nature Lover: Downplayed, but it comes with the mellow fellow attitude. She's not above eating what she has to.
"How will I hug trees in this?"
  • Outdoorsy Gal: While every character trapped in The Constant is stuck outside, she seemed particularly fond of that even prior, being a beach-going surfer and all.
  • Pungeon Master: Like Wilson and Webber, quite a few of her quotes are puns, though they're slightly more subtle.
    "I'm digging this fancy shovel."
  • Really Fond of Sleeping: One of her favorite activites, according to her quotes. A lot of her quotes.
"Heads I take a nap, tails I go to bed."]
  • Screaming Warrior: Shockingly, her battle cry quotes are some of the only spoken in all uppercase letters, and they're some of the most furious on top of that.
Walani, attacking: "I'M A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH!"
"Oh man, you shoulda seen the look on your face."
  • The Slacker: Downplayed. She has the characteristics of one and will often express not having the motivation to do anything else but wanting to nap but she still has the skills and smarts to rough it in the wild and survive like the rest of the characters.
  • Surfer Dude: Female version. She's a Hawaiian surfer. Her personality fits the trope, and she even has a surfboard; it's as fast as the first tier of sailboats and cheaper to craft, but has much lower durability.
  • Token Minority: Being Polynesian, she was the first ever non-white character added in the franchise's history when she debuted in late 2015. Only 4 more have been added since, if you count both games.
  • Totally Radical: Comes with the Mellow and Surfer attitude in her quotes.
Walani: "Would make a radical skirt."
    "That's one gnarly-lookin' whacker."
    "Flowers totally get me."
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: While there's no related gameplay, her quotes have her near a panic attack whenever it gets dark.
Walani: "H-holy geez, it's dark! HELP! Help me!"

    Warly

The Culinarian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/warly_0.png
"Nothing worthwhile is ever done on an empty stomach!"

"A masterpiece takes time."
Voiced by: a steel drum

Warly's passion is cooking. Being the chef he starts out with his own portable crockpot and a backpack that also acts like an early icebox. He gains 33% more health, sanity, and hunger from crockpot foods, this mostly compensates for his quicker hunger drain. However, he only gains 70% stats from raw foods, 80% from dried foods, and 90% for ones cooked over fire. He also needs to diversify his diet, as eating the food item over and over again within a day or so will reduce its benefits. He can also cook Warly-specific dishes in his crockpot, giving him slightly more options for food than other characters.

On July 25th 2019 Warly was added to Don't Starve Together with slightly modified perks. He now gains normal statistics by eating Crock Pot foods, but he will refuse to eat any other kind of food. His Chef Pouch needs to be crafted, and he can now craft a Portable Grinding Mill and Seasoning Station to add spices to any available Crock Pot food to give it additional bonuses. In addition, some of the Portable Crock Pot's exclusive recipes are missing or altered from the single player version, but has gained many more exclusive recipes with unique effects.

  • Big Eater: Has a larger Hunger meter than most characters, and it drains 33% faster (20% in Don't Starve Together).
  • Chef of Iron: As evidenced in his battle quote: "I'm also an accomplished butcher!"
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Some Warly's exclusive recipes in Don't Starve Together include not normally edible ingredients like Volt Goat Horns, Bone Shards or even Nightmare Fuel. Not only they are still edible, but they give temporary buffs to the person who eats them. Justified, as being a Supreme Chef allows him to reap the benefits of these ingredients in his cooking in ways others cannot.
  • The Dutiful Son: Before getting into the Constant Warly was taking care of his old mother who suffered from dementia. In fact, Maxwell tempted him with the promise of helping Angeline remember him.
  • Family Versus Career: He chose to abandon a promising career as a sous chef in Paris to take care of his mother.
  • Farm Boy: By examining the photographs in Taste of Home it is possible to notice that Warly's parents used to live in a farmhouse where Warly probably grew up (justifying this way his quotes about having had goats in the past). He moved away to a more tropical location with his mother only later on.
  • Gratuitous French: Often peppers his speech with French, particularly when talking about food.
  • Hidden Depths: Originally his quotes didn't hint much at his past, especially his Supreme Chef nature. However, it's since been revealed that to him, cooking is "a language through which to express love and gratitude to those he holds dear". Most notably seen with how he took care of his dear Maman.
  • Inappropriate Hunger: Other survivors' examination quotes for the various mobs are usually reactions of awe, disgust, terror, or occasionally Cuteness Proximity. Most of Warly's examination quotes, however, are usually him fantasizing about cooking or eating said mob. Even if the mob in question is either a friendly or a boss monster.
Warly: (at Yaarctopus) Trying not to think about his delicious tentacles...
  • Item Amplifier: Eating crockpot foods restore statistics for him in Don't Starve. In Don't Starve Together he loses this perk, but he gains the ability to add spices to the Crock Pot foods to give additional buffs to himself and the other survivors.
  • Mad Libs Catch Phrase: Usually says some variation of "Could use [one or two ingredients]" when examining cooked or dried food. Some examples:
(at roasted berries) Could use a pinch of sugar...
(at a cooked morsel) Could use some sea salt...
(at a roasted coconut) Could use rice and some curry spices...
(at cooked leafy meat) Could use less oxymorons...
  • Momma's Boy: Before getting into the Constant he lived with his mother, and their house was full of photographs of them together. Justified as the woman is old and affected by dementia.
  • Picky Eater: In Don't Starve Together he refuses to eat foods not cooked in a Crock Pot, and he will complain if he is forced to eat the same dish more than twice within 2 days (1.75 in single player).
  • Poirot Speak: Often peppers in French in his dialogue randomly, to highlight his French background.
  • Supreme Chef: Warly mentions that he was a chef before in some of his quotes and he often remarks on what can compliment whatever dish he's making, with the descriptions sometimes bordering on Food Porn. His portable crockpot also allows him to cook dishes unique to him, such as Monster Tartare (which, unique for a monster based dish, actually restores some sanity, although only in single player.) Don't Starve Together takes this a step further by allowing him to use certain items for ingredients that other characters can't use, such as Volt Goat Horns, Nightmare Fuel, and Bone Shards. Quotes from the other survivors on some of his exclusive recipes have quite a few talk about his cooking positively (even Maxwell).
    • Fantastic Light Source: Glow Berry Mousse makes its eater glow for a day, allowing one to forgo light sources such as Torches or Miner Hats for its duration.
    • Shock and Awe: The Volt Goat Chaud-Froid gives its eater added lightning damage to all attacks for one day.
  • Team Chef: Warly already was already a chef in Shipwrecked, but he inevitably evolved into this after joining the other survivors in Don't Starve Together. Their quotes reveal that he is now the designated cook of the team, and that they are more than happy to be able to eat real food again thanks to his cooking skills.
  • Token Black: Justified since his culture is actually relevant to both his mechanic and the setting. Eventually, Walter was added as another black character.
  • Through Her Stomach: A tearjerking example. He used to cook for his mother to jog her fading memory.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: It is difficult to notice, but according to the background photos shown in Taste of Home Warly looks almost identical to his father, albeit there are some minor differences to distinguish the two (Warly's father had a slightly darker skin tone, his beard was trimmed differently, he wore glasses and he had black bead eyes).

The Monkey King

"Oooh Oaoh."
Voiced by: an organ grinder

Wilbur is the king of Prime Apes. He is slightly slower than the other characters but can run after walking for 3 seconds, making him go faster than them. While running his hunger will drain by 33%, but he will usually arrive at the destination 33% sooner than the other characters. Prime Apes also consider Wilbur a friend, similar to Webber with spiders. Wilbur will also generate manure every 2-5 days, which he can fling as a stack.

    Woodlegs

The Pirate Captain

Woodlegs, being a pirate, has all treasure mark locations, including a few extras he generates revealed on the map. However, his sanity constantly drains when he is on land. This is why he can build his ship, the 'Sea Legs'. It is slow but armed with a powerful cannon that has infinite uses.

  • A Pirate 400 Years Too Late: This is the case so long as he's from the same early 20th century setting as the other playable characters.
  • Badasses Wear Bandanas: Actually, it's more as a part of his pirate look, but he is still a bandanna-wearing badass under his pirate hat.
  • Cool Boat: A cannon-equipped ship named the 'Sea Legs'.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Intended to be used in Shipwrecked, thus suffers horribly in the base game.
  • Distressed Dude: He is first found locked in a cage and must be rescued to be unlocked.
  • Dressed to Plunder: Although you can tell he's a pirate, he actually doesn't have much stereotypical pirate wear. He's only got the hat (which doesn't even come with a feather), beard, and two wooden legs!
  • Flat Character: Sometimes you just need a fun character full of funny piratical quips and quirks and nothing more for your tropical island setting. Woodlegs fills this role perfectly.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: His quote upon examining the eyeshot made out of a Flup.
    Woodlegs: "Flup you."
  • Handicapped Badass: He walks with two woodlegs, and walking or even standing still on land drains sanity at a fast constant rate. However when it comes to boats, he is the king of the sea. He even has his own ship, which can fire an infinite number of cannonballs.
  • Hat of Power: Wearing his lucky hat makes treasure chests pop into existence around the map.
  • Meaningful Name: No need to point out why he is named like that.
  • Named After the Injury: A guy named Woodlegs, who has two Seadog Peg Legs.
  • Noodle Incident: It's never really brought up what Woodlegs did to end up caged by the volcano prior to being unlocked by the player.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Known as Woodlegs, which sounds more like a nickname than anything else. He is a pirate captain after all!
  • Seadog Beard: Has a pretty big one. And like Woodie, refuses to shave it with a razor.
  • Sea Dog Peg Leg: He has two and is even named after them.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: His motto above is an example.
Woodlegs: "Can I be diggin' treasures wit' this?"
"I'd like ta throw 'em overboard."
"Me ship. She's me Sea Legs."

Introduced in Hamlet

    Wilba

The Royal Adventurer

"MAKE KINGDOM PROUD!"
"ADVENTURE LIE'ETH YONDER!"

Wilba is the daughter of Queen Malfalfa from Hamlet. Her Pig Princess status causes the fellow pigs to give her random gifts every now and then. And thanks to her mixed heritage she is able to turn into a Werepig like the pigs in the Constant, but she has a secret amulet to prevent her transformation if needed.

  • Artifact of Power: Wilba's exclusive Silver Necklace that allows her to control her Werepig transformation.
  • Blue Blood: She is a princess and her pig subjects will give her gifts to help her during her adventures.
  • Cheerful Child: With that constant smile on her face, she is one.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Downplayed in a similar manner to Wurt in that she's more of a childish ugly cute than conventionally so.
  • Damsel in Distress: Parodied. Wilba needs to be unlocked by giving the Royal Crown to the Pig Queen because she is grounded for having lost it in the first place.
  • Gluttonous Pig: She has a hunger stat of 200, which is 50 more than most characters' average of 150, meaning she can put away a lot of food if she wants to. She also doesn't take sanity loss from eating spoiled food or, in the case of Monster Meat, health or sanity loss (though eating too much Monster Meat at one time will turn her into a Werepig which will probably make your food situation worse as detailed below) even if she doesn’t get the full hunger and health benefits from spoiled food like WX-78 does.
    • In her Werepig form her hunger drains five times faster in this form, meaning the player is going to need to pretty much be constantly eating to avoid starving to death.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's a child pig princess who has the necessary skills to survive in the wilds.
  • No Indoor Voice: She speaks in all caps.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Wilba is able to turn into a Werepig during the Full Moon and the Aporkalypse, or in case she eats too much Monster Meat. She can prevent the transformation by wearing her Silver Necklace, but it will drain her Sanity.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: If her appearance in the Early Access trailer is anything to go by, she is pretty competent at surviving and fighting things.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Despite being the young princess of Hamlet, she has lots of survival skills that do her good out in the wild.
  • Rebellious Princess: Several of her quotes indicate that she doesn't want to be queen after her mother, preferring to go exploring instead.
  • Regal Ringlets: She's a princess and sports the look exactly.
  • Videogame Cruelty Potential: Before you unlock her, Wilba is just a normal NPC who hangs out in her room in the queen's palace. Which means that she can be killed like any other pig to get some extra resources, but doing that will make it impossible to unlock her for that version of the world.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Like her fellow Pigfolk, she's afraid of the dark, and loses Sanity faster than the other characters when engulfed in darkness.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Due to living in Hamlet, a place for civilized pigs, and being the daughter of royalty, she speaks in Early Modern English. Much of it is paraphrased Shakespeare.
  • You Are Grounded!: Wilba needs to be unlocked because she lost her mother's crown during one of her adventures and she will stay grounded until the crown will be returned.
  • Youthful Freckles: She has six freckles, three on each cheek.

    Wormwood

The Lonesome

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_1207_0.PNG
"Hello friend?"
"Mmm...Smells good!"
Voiced by: a didgeridoo

Wormwood is a humanoid plant who was born when a magic piece of rock fell from the Moon to one of Hamlet's islands and it got fused with the local plants. He has exclusive access to his own Green Thumb tab that allows him to create several powerful plant-based items, such as thorny armor and a strong healing wrap. Wormwood can also plant seeds without the use of a farm, and planting anything can boost his sanity. Additionally, he can use manure and its variations to heal himself. In exchange, Wormwood cannot gain health from food; however this also means items such as Red Caps will not hurt him when consumed. If any plants get destroyed near Wormwood, then he will lose sanity. During Spring, Monsoon, and Lush seasons, he will bloom; blooming increases his walk speed, but also drains Hunger faster.

As of July 2023, in Don't Starve Together Wormwood has received a skill tree with varied branches, concerning his interaction with surrounding plants and nature.

  • An Arm and a Leg: His method of producing living logs involves growing a gnarled mass of wood around his arm and then violently breaking it off, costing him 20 health.
  • Animating Artifact: His origin cinematic reveals that Wormwood was born when a gem fell from the moon and fused with a root.
  • Arc Welding: Wormwood was introduced first in the single player DLC Hamlet. A few months later he was ported in Don't Starve Together and he got an origin cinematic which reveals that he was born thanks to the new multiplayer exclusive Celestial Magic.
  • The Beastmaster: Of lunar mobs once he unlocks his Lunar Cultivator Skills, done so by defeating Celestial Champion and having at least five skills unlocked on the right branch of his Insight tree. Sacrificing some health and an appropriate ingredient, Wormwood can summon Carrats to help grab items for him, Bulbous Lightbugs for light, and Saladmanders for combat.
  • Big "NO!": He gives one if he sees a burning sapling.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: He apparently finds rot and wet goop yummy. Also, fertilizers are some of the few things able to heal his wounds. Justified, as he is a plant and such objects fertilize him and promote his growth.
  • Born as an Adult: As it was shown during his origin cinematic.
  • Born of Magic: Of Celestial Magic, to be precise.
  • Clothing Appendage: A lot of his skins, even his default forms, have his leaves imitate clothes and hair styles.
  • Companion Cube: He'll refer to other non-animate plant life as his "friends", and judging from some of his examination quotes, likes to start conversations with them.
  • Compressed Hair: Variant. The flower that blooms on his head is about as big as he is when it's in full bloom, but can still be squeezed under any headgear.
  • The Cutie: Wormwood is a sweet and naive creature, with an endearingly innocent view of the world.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: He can plant seeds directly in the ground and hostile plants are neutral to him, but he is more susceptible to fire as a result. He can also be frozen by the Ice Flingomatic.
  • Fertile Feet: He gains this effect while he's in full bloom. It isn't just cosmetic either; bees are attracted to it.
  • Foil:
    • To WX-78. Whereas WX-78 is a mechanical construct who wants all organic life dead, Wormwood is a sentient plant life who wishes to have friends.
    • Gameplay wise to Willow. Whereas Willow gains sanity through burning down things often resorting to burning down entire forests for a sanity boost, Wormwood loses sanity from seeing plant life burned but gains it from planting other plants and trees. Willow also has an immunity to fire damage, while Wormwood is more susceptible to fire.
  • Friend to All Living Things: To plants. Averted with animals, which he keeps on unintentionally scaring off. Though unlike Webber and Wortox, they're not hostile to him in-game.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: His origin cinematic shows he was born when a green gem fell from the moon, and sure enough, his Insight tree lacks an option to become Shadow Alligned. He can only be Lunar Alligned.
  • Gem Heart: The green gem on his chest is the reason why he came into being, and it seems to be the source of his sentience.
  • Green Thumb: He has access to the "green thumb" crafting tab, allowing him to craft items that no one else can use, gains sanity from planting most plants, blooms in the spring (or DLC equivalent), gaining a faster speed and increased hunger drain, and plant-based enemies don't bother him. He also has the unique ability to plant seeds without the need for a farm plot, and in DST the resulting crops stay fresh on the vine 50% longer than if they were planted by anyone else. However, he also loses sanity whenever he kills a plant, whether by chopping down a tree or picking flowers. With his skill tree, he can also craft bushes and saplings, including the rare monkey tails and fleshy bulbs and summon the plant based lunar mobs.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He'll ask a lot of things to be friends, even if they're hostile and are in the middle of trying to kill him, such as Treeguards. If he reaches Maxwell's throne in Adventure Mode, despite all the worlds that Maxwell had just put him through, the only thing Wormwood will ask Maxwell is if he wants to be friends.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: One of the few characters to avert this, along with Wanda. Wormwood is unable to heal himself from damage by consuming food, requiring him to make use of non-food items for healing.
  • I Choose to Stay: Just like Wurt, Wormwood is actually a Constant native who decided to join the survivor's group in Don't Starve Together.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Titled "The Lonesome" for a reason, his origin cinematic shows him trying to befriend other creatures and failing and ends with him lonely and alone for the night. His quotes also express a huge desire for friends.
  • Meaningful Name: Common wormwood was used to make alcoholic drinks, originally for medicinal purposes.
  • Nature Hero: He is able to plant seeds directly in the ground and the normally aggressive plants in game are neutral to him. He also gets upset when other plants die around him.
  • The Nicknamer: He has a descriptive alternate name for just about everything, for example calling pigs "Twirly Tails" and pangoldens "Shiny Poopers." He seems particularly fond of naming things after the sounds they make, such as calling Hounds or other canines in the game as "woofers" or even more fittingly to the trope, calling Koalefants "Bruamp Bruamps" or calling Ballphins "EEE! EEE!". Justified by the fact that he is actually a newborn in a fully developed body.
  • Plant Person: He is a plant given sapience and a humanoid form.
  • Prone to Tears: Examining any burnt tree or an axe will make him cry. And so will killing swordfish, oddly enough.
  • Really Was Born Yesterday: He is the only character who is not surrounded by the Air Balloon's debris when he wakes up in Hamlet's world. His origin cinematic reveals that the ruin location where he spawns in is the very place where he was born and where he fell asleep at the end of the previous day.
  • Terse Talker: Descriptive names aside, he doesn't mince words.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Being a sentient plant, he's uncomfortable around axes and fire.
  • You No Take Candle: The rare times when he is not speaking one word at a time, his sentences tend to be broken.
Wormwood: (at a Palm Treeguard) How doing, friend?

    Wheeler

The Intrepid Explorer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wheeler.png
"The whole world's mine to explore!"

"You haven't heard the last of Maybelle Dorothea Wheeler!"
Voiced by: a ragtime piano

Maybelle Dorothea Wheeler is an adventurer who has crashed landed in the Constant. Though she has low health and less pocket space compared to the other survivors, she's faster when carrying less and is able to perform a dodge roll that can make her avoid being hit.

  • Abnormal Ammo: Her Pew-matic Horn can use every not unique item in the game as a bullet. Which includes food.
  • Action Girl: She has a gun and knows how to fight.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: It was her profession according to her quotes.
  • Ambiguously Brown: The straightest example of this in the game. She has the same skin tone as Warly, the darkest in the singleplayer game.
  • Badass Bookworm: Downplayed. She is an archeologist aeronaut.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Her hair looks gorgeous for a woman who constantly raids hidden ruins full of death traps for a living.
  • Bold Explorer: She's described as "A gutsy aeronaut whose latest adventure has blown off course." and her quotes follow suite.
  • Boring, but Practical: Her Navigadget is a compass that point the location of the same object the player puts inside of it. Which can be useful for tracking the items you are in desperate need of or the source of that item. It certainly isn't as awesome as her Pew-matic Horn or her Dodge skill but it's still a very useful tool.
  • Catchphrase: “Swell.” Usually said sarcastically.
  • Challenge Seeker: She loves adventure to the point she gets excited at the sight of human skeletons.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A lot of her lines seem to be absolutely dripping with sarcasm.
Wheeler: (examining a Cooked Banana) Swell. I made baby food.
  • Fragile Speedster: She has the second lowest Health in the game, but she has a natural speed boost that increases for every empty slot in her inventory. She is also the only character with the ability to dodge enemy attacks.
  • Grin of Audacity: Her default facial expression.
  • Gun Nut: Most of her item quotes revolve around whatever it would make a good bullet for her Pew-matic Horn.
  • The Gunslinger: One of her exclusive items, the Pew-matic Horn, is the cartoonish version of a gun that uses everything as a bullet.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Her weapon of choice, the Pew-matic Horn, though treated by her in-game and by this article as a gun, is actually an airhorn. When she gets an actual gun in the form of a blunderbuss, Wheeler still prefers using her Pew-matic much more.
  • In Harm's Way: "Dangerous" to her seems to mean "exciting".
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: She has a fondness for cats and feline-looking mobs and has a preference to them over dogs, according to her dialogue.
  • Last-Name Basis: Wheeler is her surname. Because of the W-names convention, she is referred to by it.
  • Meaningful Name: Her middle name, Dorothea, is similar to Dorothy.
  • Pretty in Mink: Her jacket has a fur collar.
  • Third-Person Person: Sometimes she refers to herself by using her own full name.
  • Tomboy: One of the straightest examples in the game.

Introduced in Don't Starve Together

    Winona

The Handywoman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/winona_6.png
"Anything can be fixed with hard work and elbow grease."
"Ha! I know all your moves!"
Voiced by: a tubulum

A dauntless young woman. She is a factory worker — specifically, one that used to work for Voxola/Wagstaff. Thanks to her history in manufacturing, she crafts items and builds structures much more quickly than other characters, and can craft a special tape that repairs clothing. When she enters darkness, she ignores the first hit from the Night Monster, due to being Charlie's older sister.

  • Alliterative Name: The unimplemented script for Charlie's play is apparently "Authored by C.W.", implying Charlie and Winona's last name begins with a W.
  • All There in the Manual: Her existence was first mentioned in Charlie's notes to Maxwell in the William Carter puzzles, long before her official introduction as a playable character.
  • Arc Number: Her release date, September 13, 2017.
  • Arc Welding: Of a sort. She connects the main storyline to Wagstaff's anecdote, and expands a bit on both.
  • Big Sister Instinct: One of her examination quotes reveals that she went to the Constant to rescue Charlie (while lamenting that she is not doing a very good job of it).
  • Black Bead Eyes: Unlike most of the other female characters (other than Wickerbottom), she has these instead of solid white ones.
  • The Blacksmith: Her Victorian skin is based on this.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Being a riveter, she sports the look. None of her skins even have her hair go past the chin.
  • Cain and Abel: Invoked. Despite Winona being Charlie's sister, she can still get attacked by the darkness like any other PC by staying in it for too long.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: Her unique craftable item, Trusty Tape, is a cheap, stackable single-use item that repairs clothing durability.
  • The Engineer: She was labeled as one by her exclusive character tab.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Her character upgrade gave her the ability to create exclusive spotlights, catapults, and the generators to power them.
  • Hidden Depths: For a tomboyish engineer, she meshes surprisingly well with formal parties, judging by her "Guest of Honor" quote.
Winona: "The life of the party has arrived!"
  • I Will Find You: She's really dedicated to finding Charlie, to the point where she went at it for over a decade.
  • Jack of All Stats: Her Health, Hunger and Sanity stats are identical to Wilson's; the difference between them lies in their character-specific abilities. They also have the same fields of weapon expertise in "The Forge", although Winona has more health, different perks, and starts with a hammer instead of darts.
  • The Lad-ette: She's a pretty rough-and-tumble woman.
  • Meaningful Name: Winona means 'firstborn daughter', subtly hinting at the fact she's Charlie's older sister.
  • Ms Fix It: Her Trusty Tape invokes this even if it only repairs damaged clothes, though it is played straight during her origin cinematic.
  • Sibling Rivalry: When Winona evades an attack from the Night Monster, she'll exclaim "I already know all your moves!", implying she often fought with Charlie growing up. She also snarks at live Mandrakes that they're exactly as annoying as little sisters are.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Compare her, a brave and tomboyish engineer to her more demure, friendlier sister, Charlie.
  • Tomboy: Writes itself.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: In a family photo shown in her short, Winona bears a heavy resemblance to her own father.
  • Wrench Wench: Being a young woman good with machines, this is obligatory for Winona. She even managed to repair Wagstaff's portal device.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Like Wilson and Willow, she isn't too fond of Spiders.
  • Workaholic: She really loves her hard-working life, to the point of getting excited about ruined structures because she'll get to rebuild them, and accusing sleeping caged birds of having it far too easy to be tired at night.
Examining Booster Shot: "I've never taken a sick day in my life!"

    Wortox

The Soul-Starved

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wortox.png
"Pardon me if I don't shake your hand."

"Oh, we're going to have some fun!"
Voiced by: a violin

An imp and a former friend of Krampus. He has the ability to absorb the souls of the dying creatures for him to employ for multiple uses, but as the souls are the main source of his nourishment he gains only half of the Health, Hunger and Sanity from normal food. He was added to the game on March 28th, 2019 and the only way to unlock him in the game is to pay $6.99 or to weave him with the Spools you obtained by playing the game for some time. The reason why he was put as unlockable by payment was to help support the development of the game.

  • Accidental Murder: He accidentally absorbs the soul of Krampus in his introductive short. Good for Krampus that Death Is Not Permanent in the Constant.
Examining Krampus: Heh heh. No hard feelings?
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: If his quotes don't rhyme, they often alliterate instead.
  • Animals Hate Him: Justified by his nature of soul-eating demon.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Zigzagged. He sometimes speaks in this manner, but it's inconsistent and varies from one quote to the next.
  • Apologetic Attacker: He will apologise when examining a dead pig, frog or spider, even if he was the one who killed them.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Wortox is nice and friendly, but he is still a demon who needs to eat souls to sustain himself and use his powers.
  • Beast Man: He mostly looks like a humanoid dog or fox, with the horns and hooves being more goat-like.
  • Big Eater: As he's unable to process physical food properly, he only gains half the normal stat values from it and so has to eat twice as much as any other survivor to get the same effect.
  • Big Red Devil: His current appearance. His introductive short shows it is due to the accidental absorption of Krampus' soul.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Wortox is one of the good guys, but he loves chaos and destruction as much as his species does.
  • Character Catchphrase: As well as his "Hyuyu!" laugh, he often says "Whoops-a-doodle!" or some variant.
  • Cursed with Awesome: In-game at least, his curse allows him to heal himself and others and teleport at will.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He is mischievous at his worst. He was fine stealing from the survivors because he saw them as innocent pranks, but when Krampus tried to steal a baby Beefalo from its mother he opposed and the scuffle resulted in him absorbing Krampus' soul.
  • Deadly Prank: Krampus' plan to steal a baby Beefalo resulted in Wortox absorbing Krampus' soul, killing Krampus and giving Wortox his curse.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: He will sometimes repeat a phrase at the end of his sentences, such as "they say, they say" or "I will, I will".
  • Devil's Pitchfork: Referenced when he examines a pitchfork or the Strident Trident. For the former he'll say that it suits him, and for the latter he'll say that holding it feels natural to him.
  • Does Not Like Spam: He doesn't like human food in general, but he seems to particularly hate garlic, watermelon and jelly beans.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Wortox was never truly evil to begin with, but his friendship with Krampus ended when he decided to kidnap an innocent baby Beefalo for no reason.
  • Evil Former Friend: He used to be friends with Krampus, until one day Krampus crossed a line and Wortox was forced to oppose him.
  • Fish out of Water: He's unfamiliar with some everyday items like bath plugs, egg whisks, ice and Winter's Feast trees, as well as most food items.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: He is a soul-eating demon, but he is also one of the most friendly characters in the game. If given the chance he will use his powers to heal the other players.
  • Friend to All Children: He's not a bad person by default, but harming children is his biggest Berserk Button. Krampus planning to kidnap a Beefalo calf was the catalyst for Wortox turning on him, and the only two Survivor ghosts he doesn't express a desire to eat are Wendy and Webber. Their examine quotes for Wortox imply the feeling is mutual.
  • Furry Reminder: He occasionally shows his demonic side by hissing at objects he dislikes.
  • Garlic Is Abhorrent: Wortox can eat normal food, but he does not like it. As his body is not designed to do it, he will gain only half of the nourishment the food normally gives. His examine response to garlic in particular is just to hiss in disgust.
  • Healing Hands: Wortox can use his spare souls to heal himself and his companions.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Like Wormwood, he'll refer to hostile mobs and even bosses as friends, such as Treeguards, the Antlion and Klaus.
  • Horror Hunger: He's compelled to consume souls despite his guilt over it. In particular, most of his quotes for other players' ghosts suggest that he'd like to eat them.
  • I Choose to Stay: Wortox is not a survivor, and could leave the Constant any time he wanted to. He is acting like the other survivors just because he thinks it to be fun — and possibly because he likes the company.
  • Lack of Empathy: Specifically, he doesn't seem to understand why people might not enjoy his pranks, to the point that he thinks that a fish will find getting caught and killed funny.
  • Least Rhymable Word: Runs into this when he tries to find a rhyme for an orange gem, though he gets around the purple gem by calling it "amethyst".
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: He makes a few quips about the gameplay mechanics of Don't Starve Together, such as commenting that fish are "still spawning." He also states that the light of day will drive away the Eye of Terror, a nod to how many bosses can only be fought at night in Terraria.
  • Life Energy: It seems to be the true nature of the Souls he absorbs, as they could be used to heal other people besides himself. And the fact that when other players die around Wortox they will release a soul and become a ghost at the same time with no apparent ill-effects when resurrected seems to support this. However, Wortox will also refer to player ghosts as if they are souls, despite ghost players having already released their soul on death.
  • Mysterious Past: Absolutely nothing is known about his life before the Constant. The only information that we have is that he wasn't drawn in by Maxwell like most of the other survivors, instead he seemed to come of his own free will through the Ancient Gateway.
  • Nice Guy: He's polite and friendly to everyone he meets, including hostile mobs. That is, when he's not playing tricks on them, though that seems to be less about a desire to upset people and more about a lack of understanding that mortals don't enjoy that sort of thing.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: "Eye For An Eye" shows that he was responsible for breaking the Terrarium, and summoning The Eye of Terror to the Constant.
    "Hyuyu… whoopsie…"
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He saved a baby Beefalo, but he lost his Best Friend in the process.
  • Noodle Incident: We only get vague clues about what exactly caused the world of Terraria to merge with the Constant, and Wortox certainly isn't admitting to anything.
Examining the Eye of Terror: "Whatever he says I did, it's a lie!"
  • Only One Who Likes Spam: He seems to be the only character who likes the smell of the Air Unfreshener.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: He will occasionally drop his carefree personality to reveal that he actually feels quite guilty over his own actions.
    "My existence is a curse"
  • Our Imps Are Different: He is explicitly called an "imp". He has the ability to absorb and devour souls to gain nutriment, to teleport away or to heal himself and the others.
  • Our Souls Are Different: The Souls are his exclusive items and an animal-based mob (or a player) will drop them while dying when Wortox is in range. Wortox can collect a stack of 20 of them for him to eat or to be released to heal himself and any other player around him by 20 HP. The downside is that when the 20 Souls cap is surpassed the Souls will explode out of his inventory making him lose 10 Souls and some sanity in the process. And the Souls can be stored only in his main inventory.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He is a demon, so his demonic side tends to do this to his enemies in the form of eating their souls.
  • Picky Eater: He finds pretty much all physical food disgusting and prefers to stick to souls whenever possible.
  • The Pollyanna: He sees life as a game and so isn't usually fazed by bad things happening to him, finding it amusing rather than upsetting. In-game this manifests as him experiencing only half the usual sanity drain from monsters. He does occasionally lose this trait to show a more unhappy and vulnerable side, so it may be a facade at least in part.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: His fur turned from brown to red when he absorbed his first soul. However, it is possible to choose his original form as an alternate skin.
  • Power Incontinence: Many of his quotes suggest that he's unable to touch other creatures without taking their souls.
  • The Prankster: As shown in his Possessions cinematic he likes to play pranks to the others. His quotes suggest that he sees killing and destroying other creatures' nests just as jokes, and seeing what the other members of his species normally do it is easy to see why.
Examining Stuffed Pepper Poppers: "I'll stuff them with toothpaste when Warly's not looking. Hyuyu!"
  • Pungeon Master: He's just as fond of puns as some of the other characters.
Mistimed rowing: "Time to sync or swim, hyuyu!"
Examining Mumsy: "I'd ask hircine, but I think it's Capricorn."
Unsuccessful fishing: "Maybe they're still spawning."
  • Pyromaniac: Downplayed compared to Willow, but he reacts positively to other players starting fires and is excited by burning objects, rather than being shocked or upset like most of the other survivors.
  • Reluctant Monster: Eating souls will cause him to lose sanity.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: A large number of his examination quotes are rhymes.
Examining Red Gem: ""Deepest red, from golems bled."
Examining Blue Gem: "Somber blue from seabeds grew."
Examining Green Gem: "Gentlest green from lush vales gleaned."
Examining Orange Gem: "Bright and orange like a... a..."
  • Salt Solution: He acts nervous around salt, and his reaction to salt crystals is to just hiss at them. Salt doesn't harm him in-game though.
  • Scary Teeth: He has very sharp-looking fangs, which aren't normally visible but can be seen when he yawns.
  • Security Cling: The An Eye for an Eye trailer shows him doing this with Wilson.
  • Signature Laugh: His distinctive "Hyuyu!"
  • Silver Has Mystic Powers: He compares being stung by fire nettles to being burnt by silver.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • The other survivors will release a soul upon death when he is around (and a ghost too, unless it's a Wilderness Mode server). There are two exceptions: Webber, who releases two souls upon dying, and WX-78, who releases none.
    • Many of Wortox's quotes for critters outright say that he can't touch them, however he's still able to use the "pet" interaction on them. He's also shown Security Clinging to Wilson in the An Eye for an Eye trailer.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Constantly slips in and out of Antiquated Linguistics. For example, his quote for an impaled merm head is "I guess there are more distasteful things than soul consumption.", while his quote for a similar pig head is simply "Yuck."
  • Soul Eating: His diet consists principally of souls, even though he feels some hint of guilt about it. He can survive purely on regular food, but he hates it and some of his quotes suggest that it upsets his stomach
  • Soul Power: He can collect souls. He can just eat them restoring 18 hunger at cost of 5 sanity, he can use them to teleport for a short distance and he can release them to heal himself and whoever is around him.
  • Stepford Smiler: He uses his upbeat and playful persona to mask his guilt about taking souls.
  • Sticky Fingers: Along with Krampus, he used to steal the Survivors' belongings for fun.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: When examining Krampus he will say "Heh heh..." rather than his usual "Hyuyu!", to indicate nervous rather than happy laughter.
  • Super-Hearing: He can hear the Lucky Whistle, a dog whistle that emits sound in the ultrasonic range.
  • Sweet Tooth: Judging by his quotes for Hallowed Nights and Winter's Feast treats, he finds sweets more appealing than other physical food.
  • Strange-Syntax Speaker: His speech uses an inconsistent mix of rhyme, alliteration, Verbal Tics, Puns, unnecessary repetition and Antiquated Linguistics, all of which gives it a subtly odd quality.
  • Tastes Like Chicken: Examining a ghost Weregoose will prompt him to ask if goose souls taste like chicken.
  • Teleportation Spam: Wortox can consume one soul to teleport away from his current location. As of Wickebottom's rework, he can also perform a "soul echo" after soul hopping, which allows him to teleport again for free.
  • Teleportation with Drawbacks: Each teleport costs at least one soul, depending on the distance.
  • Teleporter's Visualization Clause: His long-distance soul hop only works for locations which have been filled in on the map.
  • Touch of Death: Some of his quotes reveal that his soul absorption ability activates through touch.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Pomegranate, which seems to be the only physical food he actually enjoys. Though for some reason he'll say that cooked eggplant is his favourite upon examination.
  • Verbal Tic: His "Hyuyu!" seems to be more of this than a genuine laugh. He also tends to say "Ooo!" whenever he's excited.
  • Walking Wasteland: He is unable to touch other people without taking their soul, killing them in the process.
  • Warp Whistle: In Wickerbottom's rework, Wortox gained the ability to teleport anywhere on the map that he's previously been to. Each teleport costs a certain number of souls, which increases with the distance traveled.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Zigzagged, his quotes for salt and garlic imply that they hurt him, but he's able to consume both with no negative effects. He also says that touching silver burns him.
  • Weaponised Teleportation: Wortox is invulnerable while soul hopping, which allows him to use it defensively to avoid enemy attacks.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Krampus, until Wortox realized how evil he was.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: While the player can force him to do it, kidnapping or hurting children is where he draws the line. In his backstory, he turned on Krampus when the latter planned to kidnap a Beefalo calf. In-game, examining Beefalo calves has him say that they belong with their mothers, and he's upset if the player examines an empty Tallbird nest. Examining the ghosts of most Survivors will have Wortox either imply or actively state that he wants to eat them - but he promises not to harm Webber and Wendy.
Examining empty Tallbird nest: "Her baby is gone. That's just wrong."
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: When an animal-based mob (or a fellow player) dies around him and Wortox is close enough he will absorb its soul.

    Wurt

The Half-Pint

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wurt.png
"Mermfolk known for hos-per-tality, florp."

"Hi, florp!"
Voiced by: a sawtooth tone combined with someone gargling water

A young female merm. She was added to Don't Starve Together on October 24th, 2019. As a Merm, Wurt has a natural boost in speed when she walks on the Marsh ground, she won't drop items when she is wet, and she is able to see where the tentacles are located when she is in close proximity. She is also able to build Craftsmerm Houses, which makes normal Merms neutral to every player character in the game, Merm Flort-ifications, which allow Loyal Merm Guards to spawn if a King is in the world, and the Royal Tapestry, which will turn the Merm sitting on it into the Merm King to boost the statistics of all the Merms in the world, including Wurt. Other than that, she can borrow Wickerbottom's book to boost her own sanity and she can't eat any meat-based food, but she gains extra statistics by eating Durians and Kelps. Like Wortox and Wormwood, the only way to unlock her in the game is to pay $6.99 or to weave her with the Spools.

  • Action Girl: She is a Merm Guard as her horns can attest. And the Merm Guards are born to protect the Merm King.
  • Arc Welding: It is thanks to Wurt that we finally learn more about Mermkind and their culture.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Her quotes imply that she gets easily distracted by the bright colors and novelties.
  • Badass Adorable: A young merm-warrior who, with time, can help her society go from a scattered village of huts into a powerful faction with their own ruler and armada, and her as their leader.
  • Badass Bookworm: Downplayed. She can borrow some of Wickerbottom's books to boost her own sanity, but it will have the opposite effect if the words it contains are too complicated.
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: Her opinions on things are often the opposite of what's normal, for example she calls flowers and butterflies ugly and thinks garlic powder and durians smell nice.
  • The Beast Master: She can befriend Merms and Merm Guards, and she can even craft houses and fortifications for them and the Merm King.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: She can summon the Merm King to the world, who will boost her statistics as well as the other Merm Guards'.
  • Berserk Button: Pigmen, just like the other Merms.
  • Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp": She calls humans "scale-less", Spiders "spiderfolks" and Merms "mermfolks". Probably because the Merms normally refer to these species using this terminology in their native language.
  • Children Are Innocent: She might be a Merm Guard born and grown into the Constant, but she is not as competitive or aggressive as the other members of her species. And this caused her to befriend the survivors, which can lead to the Merms' Heel–Face Turn.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Downplayed. Wurt's certainly adorable, but not necessarily by conventional beauty standards, instead leaning more towards ugly cute. Many players probably won't even realize that she is a girl.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Her character quotes imply that she likes to taste things that normally no one would eat (with the exception of meat, which she thinks to be disgusting).
  • Fish People: She is a young Merm Guard, and because of this she reacts to water better than the other survivors.
  • Friendless Background: Downplayed. According to her biography, Wurt gets along with the other Merms well, but sometimes she feels isolated because she is the only child in the whole swamp.
  • Furry Confusion: A weird example. Wurt is an anthropomorphic fish and she likes to keep fishes as pets in her inventory. The fact that the Merm King will repay Wurt if she brings him fishes implies that for the Merms this is normal.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Wurt exists as a rare male name in the real world.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Merms become neutral to the other players and they won't attack unless provoked if Wurt causes a Merm King to spawn in the world. The other characters still need to wear a special mask that only Wurt can craft in order to befriend them and feed the King to keep him alive, though.
  • I Choose to Stay: Wurt is a native from the Constant, but she chose to team up with the survivors because she was fascinated by their costumes and culture. Her choice paid off for every part involved.
  • Little Miss Badass: Wurt is confirmed to be a child Merm Guard, which makes her more powerful than a regular Merm.
  • Marked Change: When the world has a Merm King to protect, red marks appear on Wurt and the other Merm Guards to indicate their boost in power.
  • Only One Who Likes Spam: She is the only character who likes durians, and who doesn't lose health or sanity from eating it.
  • Poirot Speak: When Wurt and the other Merms speak their grammar is a mess, they mispronounce some words, but the meaning of their sentences is clear. Though this might be justified by the fact that Wurt is a child who is trying to learn a new language from scratch, and that she might be unconsciously trying to translate the Merm language inside her head for the player to understand.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Averted, leading to many players not realising that Wurt is female.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Unlike her fellow Merms, who are hostile towards other creatures, Wurt gets along just fine with the other survivors. She can even make her species go through a Heel–Face Turn via summoning the King of the Merms.
  • Verbal Tic: She will often end her sentences with "flort" or "florp".
  • Xenophobic Herbivore: Downplayed. Wurt is vegetarian and she still dislikes Pigs, but she doesn't blindly attack them like the other members of her species would normally do.
  • Young Conqueror: She wants Mermkind to become the masters of the Constant, and improving the living conditions of her people is just the first step for that to happen. Thankfully she likes the survivors enough to consider them allies in her personal quest.

    Walter

The Fearless

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/walter_dst.png
"A Pinetree Pioneer is always prepared!"

"Anyone want to hear a scary story?"
Voiced by: an out-of-tune bugle, or possibly a grass whistle

A young boy scout. He was added to Don't Starve Together on June 15th, 2020. His special weapon is a slingshot which ammo will cause several status effects on the enemies, other than not draw aggro. Also, his knowledge of the outdoorsy life grants him immunity from the darkness and the insanity auras, but he will lose sanity every time he gets hurt or if his health is below 100%. He can build his own camping tent and bedrolls, he restores sanity by staying near to the trees and he can tell stories at the campfire to restore the other survivors' sanity. However, he has a bee allergy that will always grant him extra damage from the Bees and all of their variants. He is also accompanied by his dog Woby, who will act as a portable inventory and, if well feed, as a mount.

  • Admiring the Abomination: He is fascinated by most of the creatures who live into the Constant.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Expectable from a Canadian. He apologizes every time he attacks. Even when he is fighting against Boss Monsters.
"Sorry!!"
  • The Beast Master: He befriended a lost pet dog named Woby mere seconds after being banished into the Constant. She will act as a secondary inventory container like Chester and Hutch, and she will grow up to a ridable size if she is fed with enough Monster Meat.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Implied. From time to time he refers to the other child survivors as "the younger kids" and he expresses the desire to teach them what he knows about scout life, healthy food and safety norms. Sometimes he does this with adult survivors too, in particular with Willow.
  • Brats with Slingshots: He is a young boy and he uses a slingshot as his main weapon. Its projectiles can cause status ailments on his enemies.
  • Camp Cook: He has the "chef" trait like Willow and Warly, meaning that he can cook faster over an open fire and use Willow's Lighter to roast basic ingredients. He presumably learned how to do that from the Pinetree Pioneers.
  • Camping Episode: Walter's perks are all about him being a boy scout, and therefore his ability to tell stories around fire, to cook faster on an open fire and to build special camping equipment.
  • Canine Companion: Woby will assist him by providing extra inventory slots and by letting herself ride by him when she is in her bigger form. She will refuse to fight against the monsters, however.
  • Character Filibuster: A lot of his quotes show he has a tendency to ramble on, usually about camping or stories, and intentionally cuts them off.
"This reminds me of a radio program I heard where a guy was hit by lightning and turned into pure electricity and-"
  • Childish Tooth Gap: It can be noticed during some of his emote animations.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: He often falls victim of this when he tries to tell a joke.
  • Fire of Comfort: He can tell stories at the campfire to restore his fellow survivors' sanity points.
  • Foil: To Robert Wagstaff, of all people. Both of them are smart people who love weird, scary stuff. But unlike Wagstaff, Walter knows where to draw the line and he agrees to kill the monsters if they turn out to be too dangerous. Also, Robert Wagstaff is a white old man who owned a factory and works using technology, while Walter is a black child who loves outdoorsy life and knows everything about nature.
  • Freaky Is Cool: He likes monsters, he likes being a ghost when he dies, and he was looking for the Werebeaver when he ended up into the Constant.
  • Friend to Bugs: He loves bugs and he repeats quite often how useful they are.
  • Ghost Story: His own favorite kind of stories.
  • Hypochondria: Downplayed. The only thing that really scares Walter is to get injured. When his Health is low enough he will start to lose Sanity, and the drain won't stop until he gets healed.
  • Monster Clown: He doesn't like clowns, and because of this he doesn't like Wes. But he will still be nice to him.
  • Nature Lover: Walter loves everything about outdoorsy life, to the point that he restores Sanity just by standing close to the trees.
  • Nerves of Steel: His title is "The Fearless" and he is not affected by the sanity auras at all (unless something hurt him and reduced his maximum health).
  • Nice Guy: He is friendly and polite with everyone, monsters included.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: He likes ghosts and he is sympathetic towards the monsters. And because of this he is immune to sanity auras.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, his mother banned him from her garden after a certain "Slug Incident".
  • No-Sell: He can't lose sanity through sanity auras. The only way to deplete his sanity meter is to keep him at low health or to use magic items that grant a sanity penalty to the player.
  • Plot Allergy: Walter is allergic to bees and all the bee-based mobs will deal more damage to him as a result. And no armor can protect him from the extra damage.
  • The Reliable One: He is a Canadian boy scout. It was unavoidable.
  • Scout-Out: He belongs to a Canadian scout group named Pinetree Pioneers.
  • Youthful Freckles: He is a child and he has freckles.

    Wanda

The Timekeeper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wanda_dst.png
"Time! I just need more time!"

"If at first you don't succeed, reverse time and try again."
Voiced by: clock chimes

A young, middle-aged, and elderly clockmaker who has been avoiding Them with her ability to manipulate time but ultimately failed and wound up in the Constant anyways. Wanda has the ability to manipulate time in different ways with special clocks that she can make. However, due to her condition, her health meter is replaced with an age meter instead. She rapidly ages over time and taking damage will cause her to age even faster up to her death at age 80. Due to the absence of the health meter, Wanda cannot heal herself through normal means but always has the ability to reverse her age back to her younger self. When young, Wanda is faster when attacking and doing tasks. As she ages she gets physically weaker and slower at doing tasks but becomes stronger with her magical abilities.

  • Achilles' Heel: She can hypothetically forever avoid death, but not if she gets hit hard and reverts to old age.
  • Ambiguously Brown: She has the second darkest skin tone in the game. However, the only quotes that might hint at her origin have her referring to a parental figure as 'baba', common in South Asia and the Middle East.
  • Casting a Shadow: As Wanda ages, her proficiency in magic increases. This includes the Dark Sword, which actually gets stronger the more she ages contrary to how Wanda usually gets weaker with melee weapons as she ages. In addition, her exclusive Alarming Clock is fueled with Nightmare Fuel and, like the Dark Sword, gets stronger the more older Wanda is. It also makes Greater Gestalts attack her on sight if she has the Alarming Clock equipped.
  • Clock King: She's obsessed with time and is constantly fretting over it.
  • Epic Flail: Her exclusive weapon, the Alarming Clock. Under the right circumstances, especially with Old Wanda, it can deal the most damage out of all the melee weapons in the entire game.
  • The Fog of Ages: It is heavily implied that she suffers from a variation. As her Ageless Watch broke when she was dragged in the Constant, she experienced visions from all the possible timelines which happened, were happening, and will happen in the Constant. This means that not only Wanda acts like she always knew all the members of the Survivors' group, but she has warnings to give to some of them... too bad that she forgot what she was supposed to say.
  • Fountain of Youth: Her Ageless Watch makes Wanda's age regress by 8 years for every use. Given that every damage Wanda takes causes her to age up instead of hurting her, this is also her only means to heal herself.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: Averted even more than Wormwood. Wormwood at least can use healing items to recover health: Wanda can't do that as her health bar is actually an age bar. She must rely only on her character-exclusive Ageless Watch to heal herself (or rather, to recover some of the years the hit stole her).
  • Mental Time Travel: She can constantly fluctuate her age between 20 and 80 years old.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Old Wanda's perk of reduced Sanity loss and her proficiency with magic weapons makes her a Glass Cannon able to deal nearly as much damage as Mighty Wolfgang. The downside is that, as she loses years instead of health when she gets hit, she will get killed in one hit by almost every enemy in the game unless she is using a good armor. This is inverted when she uses normal weapons, as they will deal only half damage because Old Wanda is physically weaker than the other characters.
  • No Body Left Behind: Wanda has a unique death animation as she can only die of old age. When it happens, the Shadows claim her original body leaving no skeleton behind, differently from all the other characters in the game.
  • No-Sell: Her condition makes her immune to any kind of damage. However, the damages she would have taken still cause her to grow old, and she can't heal from that unless she uses her exclusive Ageless Watch.
  • Non-Linear Character: She created her watches to escape from the Shadows who were chasing her for a very long time, other than keeping herself young in order to do so; when her Ageless Watch broke in the moment They finally got her she experienced visions from every possible timeline from the Constant, meaning that she is constantly unsure if an event she remembers already happened or is bound to happen in the future.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Wanda's perks change based on her age: Wanda's proficiency with magic grows stronger with age, being normal in her Young form, 1.2x when she is Normal, and finally 1.75 when she is Old. This applies also with the resulting sanity drain these items usually cause: it is normal for Young Wanda, halved for Normal Wanda and it takes only a quarter of the original drain for Old Wanda.
  • Rapid Aging: Damaging Wanda causes her to lose years from her lifespan instead of physically injuring her. Thankfully she has the means to revert it.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Her default outfit has a bunch of clocks randomly affixed all over her body for some reason.
  • Sweet Tooth: Her favorite food is taffy and her quotes imply she has a like for foods that are made with honey.
  • Teleportation Spam: She can use her Backstep Watch to teleport back to a position she moved from shortly before. It has a two seconds cooldown and the distance she can cover depends on her age.
  • Time Is Dangerous: Taking damage or simply existing fast forwards her age, up to her death at 80 years old. In a loop. Trying to use a broken and hastily repaired magic clock to escape the shadows is what got her stuck in the Constant.
  • Time Master: Wanda can use her pocket watches to control her point in time, her age in time, and even create rifts in it.
  • Time Rewind Mechanic: Wanda can rewind to a previous point in time with one watch. As well as rewind death with another.
  • The Watchmaker: She's a clockmaker.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: She's destined to be captured by Them and later die at the age of 80. Wanda however is completely determined to do whatever it takes to fight against it anyways, though she eventually failed at the former.

    Wonkey

The Accursed

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wonkey_dst.png
"Ook OOK!"

"I'm feeling a little wonkey.."
Voiced by: a cuíca

Not a new character per se, but a new form for all survivors unfortunate enough to suffer the Moon Quay curse. Defeating Powder Monkey's will have them drop accursed trinkets that will force themselves into the players inventory, and once ten are collected, force a transformation into the monkey form known as Wonkey.

  • Cursed with Awesome: Downplayed. Transforming into Wonkey will make your character lose all of their perks in exchange for Wonkey's. Wigfrid and Wolfgang's strength, Wickerbottom's books, Wortox's teleportation and soul collection. However, that also applies to all of their flaws too. Wurt and Wigfrid lose their food limitations, meaning they can eat meat and veggies respectively. Wanda's age mechanic gets swapped for regular health that can be healed with food, Wortox won't suffer from his food penalties, so on and so forth. It can make being cursed into quite the boon for certain characters.
  • Forced Transformation: As the game puts it:
Whoever they were, they're a monkey now.
  • Secret Character: Won't show up in the Curio Cabinet until a character is cursed for the first time.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Has many of the same abilities that Wilbur does: They can break into a sprint, gain bonuses from eating bananas, and won't be harassed by monkeys (at least the ones on Moon Quay).
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Doesn't matter if they're vegetarian, a meat eater, or Warly. Turn into Wonkey, and they will all love bananas over everything else, receiving the same hunger bonus that they do for their own favorite dishes.
  • The Unintelligible: Not you, other players can still understand you, but every other talking mob that isn't another monkey will become this to you, speaking in randomized grunts. Even the Crabby Hermit and the Ancient Fuelweaver will sound like they're speaking gibberish to you.
    • It also affects the dialogue that pops up over other non-monkey players' heads, whether the characters' quotes or the players' typed messages; it just doesn't extend to the chatbox.

Removed Characters

    Warbucks

The Affluent Explorer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/81df9d3e_d0a1_4237_8e63_4559148199b1.png
"I say ol' chap! This will be a game to remember!"

"I say! There's something hidden here!"

Warbucks is a stereotypical late 19th to early 20th century British explorer. He was originally the first character to be added to the Hamlet DLC, first appearing in the beta, but was removed by the developers for being not very interesting and culturally troublesome. He gained Sanity depending on how many Oincs were in his inventory, and due to his experience as an explorer he could use treasure hunting tools for twice as long as the other characters. However, he lost Sanity whenever he ate food that wasn't prepared in a Crock Pot.
