Students:

Antagonists:

    Monokuma

The iconic mascot of the killing game series, and the main overseer of this particular game.

  • Bears Are Bad News: He's a teddy bear and he's running the killing game.
  • Big Bad: He is the main overseer of the killing game.
  • Blasphemous Boast: Claims to be more fair than Buddha, God and Jesus combined. Satsuki quickly points out that he technically used God twice.
  • The Corrupter: In Chapter 4, he tells the students the consider the ballroom a separate space from the school, meaning they're not the students that the rules, save for Rule 5 which dictates they can't harm him, don't apply to them anymore, meaning that they can do things like assault and imprison other students, clearly an attempt to get them to attack each other and cause more distrust.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Near the final chapters, Monokuma is revealed to be serving under Akane Taira, a member of Ultimate Despair, and Utsuro, the true mastermind.
  • Evil Laugh: His trademark 'Upupu' style laugh.
  • Exact Words:
    • During a confrontation between Yuki and the others about his secret of "Knowing the mastermind", Monokuma chooses the time to show up to claim there's a Mole among the students. While this nearly solidifies everyone's belief that Yuki's the Mole, it isn't him. He just say there was a spy, not that it was Yuki. In reality, The Mole was Kinji.
    • In Kakeru's Monokuma file, it's stated that he was killed at 8:30. However, the file never specified whether it was AM or PM.
    • He forced Kinji to work as The Mole by telling him that the children at his Church's orphanage would be released if he did. He however never mentioned that he wouldn't kill them after releasing them.
    • Rei points out that by introducing the fourth motive, he's breaking the contract he made with the students when he said he wouldn't try anything during the party. He however reminds the student that he's done nothing of the sort, with him remembering that he stated he wouldn't do anything until they were cheered up. When Kinjo tried to state that he himself wasn't enjoying himself, he states he was taking into account the majority opinion instead of his.
  • Kick the Dog: He kills the children from Kinji's orphanage despite promising to release them, driving the latter to a Despair Event Horizon.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: He's cute-looking, and has no issues with driving teenagers to kill each other.
  • Mook: By the 6th Chapter onwards, Monokuma becomes that of an enemy mook to antagonize the students and their family members.
  • Troll: He initially makes it look like he's going to kill Haruhiko for breaking the nameplates for Kiyoka and Tsurugi's doors, only to reveal he was gonna let him off since it was an accident, simply giving him replacement plates to put up.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: In Chapter 4, he seemingly does something nice for once and throws a party for the students, having them dance and treating them to a banquet. As it turns, it was actually so he could lure the students to the 4th Floor and trap them there with a limited food supply, as well as taking their clothes and E-Handbooks.

    The Mastermind

Utsuro

Ultimate Despair

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/38dd1081ce33fee91c4f6cd2239103453782762a_hq.jpg

The mastermind behind the killing game and the true identity of Yuki Maeda.

  • Blessed with Suck: His Divine Luck has rendered him virtually alone as most people are only drawn to him to exploit his luck for themselves and Utsuro can find no meaning since everything has always been handed to him. He couldn't even kill himself to end his suffering as his divine luck would always save him.
  • Born Lucky: Utsuro was born with impossibly good luck known as Divine Luck.
  • Break Them by Talking: In the final trial, Utsuro is able to break down each of the survivor's arguments and pushes them to despair.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When he was born, his parents were blessed with his Divine Luck as they were rewarded with good health and vast fortunes. Unfortunately, his parents became filled with greed and began to exploit Utsuro for their own selfish purposes. It reached the point that the family fell apart and Utsuro had to live on the streets.
  • Death of Personality: Undergoes this in the bad end when his personality fails to resurface after Yuki Maeda regains his memories.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: It's suggested that despite the apathy he appears to have for her, he genuinely cares for Akane, as shown when he states that he initially believed that she would be the only one to survive the Killing Game, and later voluntarily stays with her when it's revealed she can't escape the Kisaragi Foundation.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: Downplayed; although he still looks youthful enough, Utsuro is far more disheveled and haggard-looking than Yuki.
  • Expy: Of Izuru Kamakura. Like Izuru, Utsuro is a powerful but dangerous member of Ultimate Despair that acts in a stoic manner. And instead of Utsuro being an alternate personality like Izuru was for Hajime, it's actually Yuki who was the alternate one.
  • Graceful Loser: After Yamato's Alter Ego takes control and provides the survivors a means of escape, Utsuro doesn't put up much of a fight. And not only does he allow them to leave, but he decides to stay behind in the self-destructing Kisaragi Foundation alongside the critically wounded Akane.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Utsuro's divine luck also worked against him thanks to his alternate personality as Yuki. This would result in Yamato's Alter Ego appearing at the last minute to save everyone or even saving Tsurugi after he shoots himself.
  • It's All About Me: Is outright called out on this by Rei in Chapter EX. He's so fixated on his own misery and how his power has made everything boring for him, that he outright doesn't care about the people he's hurting.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: During his travels, Utsuro's luck would always help those in need of salvation. But rather then helping the unfortunate out of the kindness of his heart, he merely did it because he believed that doing these things would provide him with some stimulation.
  • The Killer in Me: Yuki Maeda himself is Utsuro. To be more specific, he is Utsuro's alter ego.
  • Messy Hair: One of his defining features is his unruly hairstyle.
  • Unreliable Expositor: During the final trial, Utsuro revealed the final and tragic secrets pertaining to Tsurugi, Rei and Teruya's families as a means of breaking them into despair. But as Yamato's Alter Ego points out, there's no way to know for sure if Utsuro was revealing the truth or not.
  • Victory Is Boring: Utsuro is capable of accomplishing any task without having to worry about the process needed to reach it. Without having to work for the results, accomplishing them eventually felt completely meaningless to him.
  • Villain Protagonist: He takes over as the POV protagonist and manages to influence the final three survivors to fall into despair.

    Junko Enoshima

Junko Enoshima

Ultimate Despair

  • The Cameo: She only makes an appearance as a silhouette in the final chapter's closing arguments and in the ending.
  • Demoted to Extra: Despite being the Mastermind behind the tragedy and the Big Bad of the franchise she only makes an appearance in the closing argument and in the ending.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: While she doesn’t make a physical appearance in this game she is indirectly responsible for the killing game due to causing the tragedy and corrupting Utsuro, the mastermind.
