Grumpuses

The Protagonist

    The Journalist

The player character, a reporter who ventures to Snaktooth Island to document the Bugsnax and meet Elizabert Megafig for an interview.

  • Abnormal Allergy: They're allergic to Bugsnax, explaining why the player cannot customize themselves as they can the other residents of Snaxburg. It turns out to be quite fortunate once the true nature of the Bugsnax is revealed.note
  • Ambiguous Gender: Their gender isn't exactly clear, being a Heroic Mime first-person player character. Further muddling things is that other characters usually refer to the Journalist with they/them pronouns.
  • Brutal Honesty: Capable of some very blunt yet accurate remarks about some of the more flawed members of Snaxburg like Cromdo or Shelda.
  • The Confidant: As they help the residents of Snaxburg out, said residents become increasingly open to The Journalist about their self-doubts, personal hang-ups, and the conflicts they've experienced in their lives and with others.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: They can have black fur if you choose the fourth save file in the bottom right, but they'll always become one of the most helpful and trusted residents of Snaxburg.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While not having a voice in-game, their dialogue options, especially during interviews, can get quite snarky.
  • Disability Immunity: Being allergic to what is later revealed to be a parasite that reproduces by converting anything that eats it into more of itself Grey Goo-style turns out to be quite beneficial for them.
  • The Faceless: You can see their limbs and body (although the colour changes every save file and can be changed at will in the menu), but their face is never shown, nor is their possible appearance ever commented on.
  • Featureless Protagonist: You never see their face or learn their name or gender (though close inspection of their shadow reveals they have a snout like Elizabert, Beffica and Chandlo). Even the body color changes on new save files, with the default orange color being used for the first save (a later update also added an option to change the fur colour). So the Journalist is mostly a stand-in for you, the player.
  • Heroic Mime: Has no voice-actor, but does have dialogue options.
  • The Immune: Considering that they're allergic to creatures that can assimilate Grumpuses by being eaten, the Journalist is effectively this.
  • Instant Expert: They're quickly acknowledged to be incredibly skilled at catching Bugsnax despite being nothing more than a journalist who arrived on the island very recently.
  • Intrepid Reporter: The very definition for better or worse: Elizabert mentions other daring pieces of journalism they've written, and they ultimately head off to Snaktooth Island for the scoop that Bugsnax promises to be. However, this trait also caused them no shortage of trouble in the past, as some of their past articles were recalled after they were revealed to be poorly researched or proven false (Grumpfoot below turning out to be a mascot), and the scoop of Bugsnax is explicitly made clear to be their last chance at getting a good story before they're fired.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Separating themselves from local Butt-Monkey Filbo. The Journalist can suffer some Amusing Injuries like getting knocked across great distances or even off of cliffs, burnt by fire or lava, or frozen solid, but they always recover rather quickly with no lasting detriment to their physical abilities.
  • Noodle Incident: It's mentioned that they've previously written articles on "Soylent Grump", the "Grumpacabra", and "Grumpfoot" (the last of which apparently turned out to be a fluke).
  • Only Friend: To Beffica, largely due to being the only villager to really hang out with her and help her snoop, around though the writing in their journal seems make it ambiguous how they personally feel about "apparently" being Beffica's "Bestie". Beffica herself acknowledges that she's only able to treat The Journalist like a friend because she knows almost nothing about them and how they actually feel about her. Still, with what little the Journalist has in terms of dialogue, they do seem to show concern for Beffica after she has a heated argument with Cromdo in which he claims no one likes her because of her gossip girl tendencies.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Exaggerated; they're referred to by a good number of nicknames by around half of the cast. Specifically, "Buddy" by Filbo, "Bestie" by Beffica, "Darling" by Wiggle, "Chum" by Snorpy, "Dawg" by Chandlo, and "Pal" by Cromdo.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: At the start of the game, it's clear that they've got only one more shot at making a big story or else they're fired. They journey to the apparently treacherous Snaktooth Island to document the Bugsnax and meet up with Elizabert Megafig for an interview only to get roped into having to personally find all the missing villagers scattered across the entirety of said island. They will also likely end up having to help resolve the many personal issues and insecurities of the Grumpuses of Snaxburg, contending with several rather dangerous Bugsnax in the process. By the time they return home, their boss reveals that she had them fired the moment they left her office, expecting them to never come back, and even had them pronounced legally dead. That said, in the Golden Ending, they apparently worked together with Filbo to successfully elect him as the new mayor.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While the impetus of the game's plot is The Journalist trying to interview Lizbert and learn about Bugsnax, they really don't go through the sort of Character Development that Filbo and potentially every other villager does. Of course, they're also important in that they can help in making them develop.

The Expedition

    Filbo Fiddlepie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/filbo.png
Hi Buddy!
"The self-appointed mayor. He seems to be trying his best. Likes making friends, throwing parties, and having boundless optimism."
Voiced by: Max Mittelman

The mayor of Snaxburg, Filbo is a well-meaning, if clumsy, Grumpus who wants everyone to get along.
  • Alliterative Name: Filbo Fiddlepie.
  • Amusing Injuries: Aside from the main character, he's the one who gets battered the most, adding to his Butt-Monkey status. He's introduced attempting to catch a Strabby, but lunging on it too late and painfully slamming onto the ground. Prior to meeting the Journalist, he ate a purple flower that turned out to be poisonous, causing him to vomit and go blind, at which point he stumbled into a pit and got himself stuck. And this is just before the story begins.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's often the target of Amusing Injuries and general misfortune, and the others on Snaktooth Island don't respect him.
  • Extreme Doormat: One of the main reasons he gets no respect as a leader. He tries to get everyone to get along and defuse conflicts peacefully, but he's non-confrontational to the point of being a pushover.
Personality Quiz Result: "Saying 'no' makes your mouth feel bad. If you hold a door open for one person, you're stuck holding that door until the building closes."
  • Grew a Spine: Gradually becomes more competent at taking charge and keeping Snaxburg from falling apart without giving into his own self-doubts.
    • In the aftermath of a mysterious creature being sighted in Snaxburg and possibly carving an ominous message on the town's gate, everyone seems to be getting ready to leave. He's able to convince everyone that they'll be happier and safer sticking together and keeping one another safe as opposed to separating again. Even Beffica, who openly disdains and criticizes him, comes to agree with his stance.
    • By the time of the endgame, everyone's gone hysterical over a massive volcanic earthquake that's wrecked Snaxburg and sent their food supply of Bugsnax fleeing, but he's able to give a stern speech over how they can't fall to pieces every time disaster strikes and once again affirming that they're stronger when they're working together. Both Eggabell and Lizbert consider him a good leader at the end of the game and the credits scene of the Golden Ending implies that he's managed to get elected as a real mayor, with all the former Snaxburg residents that used to doubt him now supporting him.
  • The Heart: An unsuccessful version at the beginning of the game, but as he gains more confidence, he grows be one of the two biggest reasons the town hasn't fallen apart in the face of mounting conflicts as the plot progresses.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite developing traits of a real leader towards the end of the game, when Lizbert tells him to leave her behind and save all the other Grumpuses, he's suddenly very frightened to return without her, believing that he's too incompetent to be as good of a leader as her and that everyone hates him for it. Lizbert reassures him that he's exactly what the other Grumpuses need to survive the imminent destruction of Snaxburg.
  • The Klutz: Filbo is not the most coordinated person, to the point that he's set things on fire on multiple occasions.
  • Nice Guy: He would much prefer it if everyone would be nice to each other, and so acts in kind.
  • No-Respect Guy: He's a Nice Guy who's kind to everyone and has no real vices, but at the same time, he's so non-confrontational that the other Grumpuses have very little confidence in his abilities as the leader and sometimes openly belittle him.
  • Number Two: Elizabert sets him up to be the leader whenever she's out. It doesn't work out too well, given that he's the last occupant of Snaxburg when you first meet him.
  • Plot Armor: The only resident of Snaxburg aside from The Journalist that cannot possibly be consumed by the Bugsnax in the ending sequence. Aside from the main character, he's the only Snaxburg resident whose survival is guaranteed.

    Wambus Troubleham
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wambus.png
You go on ahead. I'll... ketchup.
"A folksy farmer. Often brusque. Likes honesty, hard work, and cacti."
Voiced by: Fred Tatasciore

Part of Elizabert Megafig's expedition group, Wambus has taken up farming in Snaxburg.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Triffany calls him Wamby. Filbo also calls him Wambone, although Wambus is less receptive to that one.
  • Agent Scully: Even on an island of walking, sentient food, he stays stubbornly skeptical of other characters' claims of spirits, monsters, or cult conspiracies.
  • Brutal Honesty: Doesn't mince words, often bluntly rejecting the propositions of others.
  • Companion Cube: Dressed up a cactus to resemble his wife, who left him after an argument prior to the main character arriving. Even after they get back together, he keeps the cactus around and even brings it back to the mainland with him at the end.
  • Detrimental Determination: His hard-headedness is one of his most defining traits, and it largely causes more problems for him than it solves. Throughout his questline, for instance, he's convinced he can grow Bugsnax like crops and keeps trying every gardening method in the book to make it happen, even as everyone around him — including himself — can clearly see that it's not working.
Personality Quiz Result: "You would rather take a door off its hinges than admit that you lost your keys."
  • Freudian Excuse: Part of the reason he acts coldly and is ill-tempered is that he's still hurting over his wife who left him, to the point that he's set up a facsimile with a cactus that he speaks to every night.
  • Little "No": A Running Gag is that he tends to answer very bluntly with a single "no".
  • Oral Fixation: Keeps a piece of straw in his mouth, reflecting his laid-back nature.
  • Overalls and Gingham: Wears a gingham vest, as fitting for a farmer.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The diligent and practical Manly Man to Gramble's Sensitive Guy.
  • Tranquil Fury: He tends towards this in one of his more heated responses to Gramble.
Wambus: I'm gonna do violence to ya.

    Beffica Winklesnoot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beffica.png
Hey Bestie! ;0)
"A sharp-tongued socialite snoop. My bestie, apparently. Likes gossip, photography, and breaking and entering."
Voiced by: Cassandra Lee Morris

A resident of Snaxburg who made herself a home in a nearby cave.
  • Birds of a Feather: Feels like she can connect with The Journalist because they both like to investigate subjects in-depth to learn the truth, specifically having great respect for the interviews that they conduct. It probably helps that she also used to be a writer for what is presumably a tabloid newspaper called GMZ, so she was also a journalist.
  • Brutal Honesty: Never hesitates to call it like she sees it, no matter how harsh or rude.
  • Camera Fiend: Has her own SnaxScope that she uses to snap pictures of the insides of others' houses, and occasionally of the Player when their back is turned.
  • The Cynic: She's absolutely sure that everyone has dark secrets they want to keep hidden. Her view is challenged when she can't dig up anything on Chandlo, no matter how hard she tries, because he is every bit as nice as he appears to be.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She implies during her interview that she's on Snaktooth Island to hide from the law and/or her ex-friends.
"I'm here on vacay! ;03 Uh, unrelated fun fact: did you know that no international laws apply out here? [...] I'm just saying if you got in trouble, like a LOT of trouble, and all your friends turned against you, this would be a great place to hide out forever."
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Her abrasive personality and tendency to want to snoop on people's personal issues makes her quite friendless. Even Nice Guy Filbo says that she's "awful". She herself even admits that it's a little sad how she considers the main character her best friend despite the fact she just met you and knows almost nothing about you.
  • Gossipy Hens: Most of her non-quest related dialogue is sharing gossip with the Journalist.
  • Hidden Depths: Beffica's attitude turns out to be a defense mechanism for constantly being betrayed by people she thought of as friends, extending to the point of her having the player learn the townsfolk's secrets. She starts to rethink things when her attempts to find "dirt" on Chandlo come up empty because he really is just as straightforward as he looks.
  • Jerkass: Sharp-tongued and not afraid to verbally hit others where it really hurts, though she does seem to genuinely be more friendly towards The Journalist.
  • Nosy Neighbor: Defined by her fixation with digging up dirt on others. The other Grumpuses tend to avoid her because of this.
  • Only Friend: The Journalist is her only real companion, since everyone else either dislikes her or tries to avoid her. The fact that a near-complete stranger like The Journalist whom Beffica just met is her best friend by default gets commented upon by her sardonically as "sad". Still at the end of her series of sidequests, she does seem to consider not prying into the Journalist's dark secrets just to continue maintaining their relationship unlike the countless others that have previously been ruined. With the free Isle of BIGsnax update, she'll even give them her real diary as a show of trust... and to use as decorative furniture.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: During "The Intruder", both Beffica and Gramble end up seeing what was more than likely the Snaxsquatch coming into town before disintegrating into bugsnax. And while she's usually snooty, arrogant, and overall confident in her gossiping abilities, she gets the crap scared out of her here, judging by the way she screams. And while Gramble also saw this creature, he's almost always timid and nervous, so seeing him spooked by it isn't a surprise. But Beffica getting scared by this thing might definitely take the player off guard, especially when she snaps at Cromdo for "lying for a living" after he tries to accuse her of making it up.
  • Painting the Medium: Her dialogue text is occasionally peppered with emoticons.
  • Pet the Dog: Chatting with her after the night when Gramble and her saw some mysterious creature in town has her drop her usual smug attitude completely and express concern for The Journalist, telling them to stay safe.
  • Valley Girl: A socially active Grumpus who seems to be on top of all the drama happening. When you first meet her, the first thing she says is "O-M-G".

    Gramble Gigglefunny
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gramble.png
If you're here lookin' for Bugsnax, you best turn back! These little ones are my kin!
"A passionate pet lover. Runs the Bugsnak ranch. Likes collecting things, knitting sweaters, and giving biiig hugs."
Voiced by: Sam Riegel

A meek, sensitive "rancher" who sees Bugsnax as friends, not food.
  • Alliterative Name: Gramble Gigglefunny.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Gramble is a timid and tenderhearted sort, but he's capable of being startlingly savage when pushed to it, such as during his argument with Wambus where he throws Triffany leaving him in his face.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Gramble takes in multiple Bugsnax to form a "new family" because his original, real one apparently abandoned him.
  • Friend to Bugs: Gramble would rather not eat Bugsnax. He keeps a Strabby and a pair of Kweebles, among many others, as pets.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: A soft-hearted guy who coos over the cute Bugsnax he raises like children, often cries Tender Tears, and knits his own woolen hats.
  • NaĂŻve Animal Lover: He has endless love for all the Bugsnax and keeps an ever-growing number of them in his ranch. However, the fact that most of them don't take to being trained, ignore him if he's not feeding them sauce, and frequently wander out and "get lost" all illustrate that they're not domesticated.
  • Non-Indicative Name: "Gigglefunny", as surnames go, is an extremely poor fit for Gramble, who's much more likely to cry than laugh.
  • Papa Wolf: For all of his timidness, he gets extremely defensive of his pet Snax like they were his own children.
  • Prone to Tears: Downplayed. He can be heard sniffling during some conversations with him.
Personality Quiz Result: "You cry the second you see somebody else cry."
  • Properly Paranoid: Despite how some grumps like Wambus like to make fun of him for being so timid and nervous most of the time, he's actually right about some of his anxieties. Firstly, we have him saying during his interview that he thinks Lizbert is watching him like a "vengeful spirit" whenever he wakes up in the woods after sleepwalking. That's more than likely the Snaxsquatch, which is a construct of Lizbert's designed to watch over everyone for her. Then he tells you later on that Floofty shows up in his dreams, "always watching [him]". And sure enough, late at night whenever he sleepwalks, Floofty watches him for reasons unknown. And then we have him accusing the other grumps of stealing his snax and eating them. And that turns out to be the case with at the very least Filbo, Wambus, and even Wiggle, who you actually see trying to steal a Kweeble from his barn during Beffica's sidequest.
  • Replacement Goldfish: He keeps Bugsnax as pets as a sort of substitute to the real family which abandoned him for unspecified reasons in the past. Unfortunately, they're a poor stand-in, since they're basically just wild animals which don't pay much attention to him and constantly try to escape.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: A male example, being pink-furred and the most sensitive of the group.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The timid and openly warmhearted Sensitive Guy to Wambus' Manly Man.
  • Sleepwalking: He roams Snaxburg in his sleep at night. You can force-feed him Bugsnax during these periods for an achievement.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: He's the shortest member of the group and is involved in a somewhat complicated romance with Wiggle, who's one of the tallest members.

    Wiggle Wigglebottom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wiggle.png
I simply cannot rest until I've found my muse.
"An extravagant entertainer. Her star has faded. Likes fashion, creativity, and being extremely famous."
Voiced by: Kenna Ramsey

A pop star seeking inspiration for her next hit on the mysterious Snaktooth Island.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Downplayed. Although Gramble likes her back, he also considers her attempts to woo him as coming on too strongly.
  • Attention Whore: One of her characteristics noted in the Journalist's journals is that she likes being extremely famous.
Personality Quiz Result: "You bought your own spotlight to stand in. You introduce yourself to people you already know."
  • Cassandra Truth: The night Lizbert went missing, she tried looking for her on her own. At the last place she was said to be, Wiggle instead saw the silhouette of some sort of gigantic creature that she later dubbed "The Queen of Bugsnax". Everyone else is pretty skeptical of her, which isn't helped by how melodramatic she is and how much she clearly enjoys being the center of attention. While there's no outright confirmation, it can be inferred that the gigantic creature she saw was actually Lizbert herself after having been transformed by the Bugsnax that tried and failed to assimilate her.
  • Character Tics: As her name suggests, she's constantly swaying back and forth, even when standing still.
  • Gold Digger: Of a sort. Gramble suspects her frequent efforts to seduce him are her way of getting easy access to his pet Bugsnax in his secure barn. Seeing as she gets caught by the Journalist trying to eat his pets during Beffica's questline, it seems to be accurate.
  • Instrument of Murder: If you complete all her sidequests, she can effectively use her banjo against any Bugsnax that reach her during the siege on Snaxburg.
  • Large Ham: Very prone to bursting into song.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: In-Universe. She's frustrated by the possibility that her One-Hit Wonder, "Do the Wiggle", which she literally made up on the spot after five days of no sleep, will be her defining legacy, while nobody wanted to listen to the songs she actually put her heart into.
  • Noodle Implement: Even she was baffled when she caught herself holding a banjo the day she came to the recording studio.
  • Odd Name Out: The only Grumpus of the group whose name is an actual word instead of a silly derivation of a regular name.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Always swaying about when standing though one of the few times she ceases her movements completely is when recounting her frightening encounter with the "Queen of Bugsnax" when she tried to look for Lizbert the night after she went missing.
  • Repetitive Name: Wiggle Wigglebottom.
  • Sassy Black Woman: While Grumpuses are essentially raceless, Wiggle comes across as this trope with her accent and attitude, and her voice actress is African-American.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: She assumes that The Journalist is another fan of her music career and hands them an autographed photo. The Journalist simply regards it as useless if you check the pause menu description of it. If you look in Lizbert and Eggabelle's house, an identical autographed photo is laying flat on a table, suggesting that Wiggle hands these out to others who similarly have no use for them.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: One of the tallest Grumpuses on Snaktooth in a courtship with Gramble, the shortest.
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: In-universe. She came up with her big hit song, "Do the Wiggle", after she walked into the recording studio late and (for reasons she herself doesn't know) holding a banjo after five days without sleep. She hadn't thought of anything even after all that so, semi-delirious from lack of sleep, she just made it up on the spot.

    Triffany Lottablog
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/triffany.png
Try not to step on the skulls, yeah?
"An aloof archaeologist. Has a nihilistic streak. Likes historical fiction, backpacking, and bone puns."
Voiced by: Haviland Stillwell

An archaeologist researching the surprisingly far-back history of Snaktooth Island.
  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Zigzagged. She spends most of her time in-game actually digging up fossils and skeletons in a dig site, then bringing them to her research tent for study, somewhat more like an actual archaeologist. However, she's also put herself in several life-threatening scrapes when exploring deadly ancient ruins and claims to have compared scars with Lizbert.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Wambus calls her Triffy.
  • Appeal to Familial Wisdom: Sometimes quotes things her Gramma Bronica would say.
  • Informed Attribute: The journalist considers her aloof and somewhat nihilistic, but that's more of an exaggeration at best. Otherwise, she's one of the nicest, friendliest villagers in Snaxburg. Admittedly, she's initially rather cold towards her husband Wambus for not coming with her to the dig site, but she's otherwise pretty passionate about her job, even if her cheerfulness does clash somewhat with the grim history she often exposits to the Journalist. While she does occasionally comment on the inevitability of death and how nothing really lasts forever, it's more of a realist viewpoint when her job has her often research ancient cadavers and ruined civilizations.
  • Minnesota Nice: Is one of the nicest characters in the game and speaks with a thick Minnesotan accent.
  • Motor Mouth: Downplayed. She doesn't speak in a rapid-fire fashion, but does have an occasional habit of launching into long-winded spiels about ancient Grumpus history that nobody asked for.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: At the end of the Ghost Story event, it's the dead of night and everyone's sitting by the campfire as she starts to delve into the history of the Grumpuses on the island. The screen darkens and suddenly transitions to morning, implying that The Journalist fell asleep by the campfire while listening to her.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Fascinated by history and archaeology, including all the morbid and grisly details they entail — from excitedly expounding about ancient death rituals, to regularly handling old Grumpus skeletons (she casually uses a skeletal arm as a pointer). She's also one of the few who's willing to be friendly toward Floofty, and completely comfortable discussing her own mortality.

    Cromdo Face
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cromdo.png
The name's Cromdo Face, the one and only salesman in paradise!
"A shifty, surly salesman. Bitterly pragmatic. Likes filthy lucre, complex schemes, and karaoke."
Voiced by: Rick Zeiff

A hustler who joined Lizbert's expedition for new money-making opportunities.
  • All There in the Manual: The guidebook from the physical edition of the game for the PS5 reveals that Cromdo was once married. However, something happened that led to him losing what little he had in a very messy divorce (which, if a developer AMA is to be believed, included the ability to see his own child).
  • Cynicism Catalyst: He states he apparently tried to go straight multiple times before coming to Snaktooth Island, but it never panned out for unspecified reasons, so he went back to being a scam artist since going legit never worked.
  • Establishing Character Moment: You first meet him at a blatantly shady "Cromdo Mart", where he tries to sell you an actual broken bridge.
  • Expy: Strongly resembles and sounds like Danny DeVito, and acts like a PG version of his character Frank Reynolds from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
  • Freudian Excuse: He had really poor luck achieving his dream job and turned to crime after trying to make a living the honest way didn't get him anywhere.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: His unscrupulous and sometimes outright criminal business practices make him distrusted among the Grumpuses. Even the main character has the option to call him a "blight on society". Unsurprisingly, he doesn't get along with the other community pariah Beffica.
  • Guilty Pleasures: He really likes to sing and dance to "Do the Wiggle", but for whatever reason considers it embarrassing for others to find out about.
  • Hidden Depths: Has an amazing singing voice and aspires to be a singer with his own karaoke bar once he makes money. The good ending shows him on stage at his own karaoke club.
  • Honest John's Dealership: You meet him at his makeshift "Cromdo Mart" atop a hill in Scorched Gorge, where he tries to sell you a rickety wooden bridge, for 100 Bugsnax, and then gives you a Lunchpad that is "not at all stolen".
  • Odd Name Out: All of the named Grumpuses have last names that are usually two words put together (i.e. Wigglebottom, Gigglefunny, Winklesnoot, etc.), while Cromdo's is just simply a singular word.
  • Only in It for the Money: Came to Snaktooth Island to try and strike it rich and sees the Bugsnax as his ticket to fame and fortune.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: He tried going straight multiple times, but he had no more luck at it than being a unscrupulous weasel, so he decided to just let himself fall into being a criminal if there's no difference either way.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: His bright yellow eyes add to his already shady image.

    Chandlo Funkbun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chandlo.png
LIFTIN' YOUR CRIB, DAWG!
"A brawny builder bro. Surprisingly spiritual. Likes the outdoors, challenges, and 'rager parties, braw'."
Voiced by: Yuri Lowenthal

A weightlifter and basketballer who joined Lizbert's expedition to the infamously deadly Snaktooth Island to "test his limits."
  • Character Development: In the DLC expansion (set right before the story finale), he asks you to feed him some giant Bugsnax to see if it will make him grow giant like them. When it doesn't work, instead of moping about it like at the end of the Mama Mewon fight, he decides to just own up to his mistake and move on quickly.
  • Dumb Jock: Subverted. He's a largely simple and straightforward guy who doesn't always pick up on subtler social cues or figures of speech. However, when he catches the Player helping Snorpy with a dangerous "secret" task and they transparently lie about it, he calls them out for treating him like an idiot.
  • I Can Change My Beloved: In The Isle of BIGsnax expansion, he admits that his bringing Snorpy to Snaktooth was his attempt at this after noticing a sharp increase in Snorpy's paranoia, and that he isn't sure what to do now that it only seems to have gotten worse. Shelda has to point out to him that while he can protect and support Snorpy, he can't fix him. That's what mental health workers are for.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He usually acts fairly confident and cocky about his own abilities and physique, but is constantly looking to push his strength even further and gets very down on himself when he can't.
  • Innocent Innuendo: For one of his quests, he asks you to utilise the grappler to grab his balls... that is, his lost basketballs. This continues through his questline, too.
Chandlo: "I got a situation. Hunnabee's flew off with my back-up balls. Now my balls are up in the sky!"
  • Leeroy Jenkins: The only time he bothers to pick a fight is when he seeks out the giant Mama Mewon and attempts to bum-rush it... which goes rather poorly for him. A few moments later, he catches up on its weakness and decides to instead help bait it into ramming the walls, helping you line up your shots.
  • Literal-Minded: According to Shelda's comment of him in the Snaxscope, he has no understanding of metaphors.
  • Lovable Jock: The most athletic member of the island (sans possibly Lizbert) and an all-around chill, friendly guy.
  • Martial Pacifist: Will usually break up physical fights that spark up between townsfolk as coolly as he can, but is also completely willing to fight back against hostile threats such as the Bugsnax in the final fight.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: He stumbles with one when the Journalist tries to relate to him by bringing up sports terms.
The Journalist: Thanks, Chandlo. You really "slam-dunked" my questions.
    Chandlo: Bro. That's not - just... don't.
  • Oblivious to Love: Seems completely unaware that his best friend Snorpy has feelings for him despite it being painfully obvious to everyone else. This turns out to be subverted, as it's revealed before the final level that the only reason he never commented on it before was because he thought they were already in a relationship. Ironically, Snorpy is the one who fails to pick up on the obvious clues that Chandlo loves him back.
  • Opposites Attract: A laid-back, extroverted athlete in a Will They or Won't They? dynamic with the anxious, paranoid geek Snorpy.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Chandlo's among the shorter of the Grumpuses, but also the strongest.
  • Protectorate: One of the reasons he wants to keep getting stronger is that he wants to be able to protect Snorpy from anything life can throw at them. Eating Mama Mewon failing to make him stronger teaches him a hard truth that his strength can't solve every problem.
  • Reckless Sidekick: He leads the player character to try and defeat the biggest and baddest Bugsnak around, and once he finds it, he immediately yells, charges in, and is clobbered by it and knocked out. After the fight is over, he admits that it could have killed him.
  • Sleeping Single: He and Snorpy are in love, but they sleep in separate beds in their room.
  • Surfer Dude: He has the accent of the archetype, uses a lot of its lingo, and exudes its general personality.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Has prominent pecs and large, muscular arms, but his legs are short and stumpy.
  • Vocal Evolution: Due to Yuri Lowenthal getting older (being 49 years old at the time the game was first released and then reprising his role for the DLC at the age of 51), Chandlo's voice has gotten slightly deeper and gruffier than in the base game.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With Snorpy. Amusingly, this is subverted on his end, as he already thought he and Snorpy were in a relationship and saw the latter as his boyfriend for a while now.

Whatever sort of spy or counter-agent you are, I'm not about to fall for your tricks.
"An ingenious introvert inventor, conspiracy theorist. Likes the indoors, metallurgy, and charts."
Voiced by: Roger Craig Smith

An inventor and conspiracy theorist who joined the expedition largely at Chandlo's behest.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Has a rather testy relationship with his sibling Floofty, and they usually avoid each other's company, but when he catches Floofty about to chop off their head (to test if Bugsnax can regenerate it), he puts a stop to it because he admits he does still care about his sibling and doesn't want them risking their life.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Blind enough that Beffica turning her arms into green Snax and donning a baseball cap and Californian accent is enough to fool him into thinking she's Chandlo.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: His immediate assessment of any new development is that it must be a mechination of the Grumpinati. Which, in turn, he's seemingly connected to every other classic conspiracy he could tape to his corkboard. Part of his arc is about realizing that his supposed enemies only have as much power over his life as he allows them to (and he's allowed them to have a lot). Ironically, The Stinger proves he's actually right about there being a conspiracy who knows about the Bugsnax, although they turn out to bear little resemblance to the Grumpinati that he's envisioned.
    • This aspect of his character gets further deconstructed in The Isle of BIGsnax expansion, where it's revealed that a good chunk of his paranoia stems from the dissolution of a government-funded research project he and Floofty had been working on, as well as the smear campaign against them that followed Snorpy's attempts to blow the whistle when he found out that the government's plans for said project were a great deal more corrupt than what he was trying to accomplish. The whole incident tanked both his career and his mental health, as well as put a decently-sized strain on his relationships with both Floofty and Chandlo.
  • Cuddle Bug: Often tries to give others big hugs. Turns out to be an Invoked Trope to hide what he's really up to. The first time he hugs you, he's actually planting a device on you so that he can track and communicate with you on a hidden radio signal. When he hugs you again after you interview him, he covertly gives you info on the mysterious door Lizbert found before she went missing and hands you a map of where to find it.
  • Everyone Can See It: He considers his crush on Chandlo to be a "deep, dark secret", but it's so transparent that everyone else scoffs at it. In fact, Chandlo himself thought they were already dating for years now, but Snorpy was so bad at picking up on it he didn't realize.
  • Freudian Excuse: The DLC reveals much of the reason for his paranoid Conspiracy Theorist attitude was because he attempted to be the whistleblower for a government-funded research project when he discovered the government had less than savoury applications for the project, but got himself and Floofty fired from the project before he could, and then the government began an aggressive smear campaign against the two of them that ruined his career.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Most of the Bugsnax traps the player utilizes were made by Snorpy. He also made a bunch of more lethal traps and weaponry for a hypothetical fight with the Grumpinati which prove to very useful during the Final Battle.
  • Geek Physiques: Snorpy has a notably round body paired with much thinner limbs than most, in stark contrast with Chandlo.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: Snorpy is an accomplished inventor and the Bugsnax he asks for in sidequests are all based on sugary snacks. This is largely another Invoked Trope on his part, as he believes many of these sweet Bugsnax are used by the Grumpinati to observe and track him and that eating them will neutralize them.
  • Oblivious to Love: Exaggerated. Snorpy somehow thought that he and Chandlo were just "friends with benefits", even after they had made out while riding a ferris wheel together. A rather amusing twist on the formula, considering that it first appears that Chandlo was guilty of this trope, but it turns out Snorpy was the one that didn't pick up on the cues that they were boyfriends.
  • One Head Taller: Chandlo's one of the shorter Grumpuses in Snaxburg while Snorpy has somewhat long lanky legs, leading to this.
  • Opposites Attract: An anxious, paranoid, shut-in geek with a huge crush on his laid-back, extroverted, athletic Childhood Friend.
  • Properly Paranoid: Downplayed. Shelda makes it clear on Broken Tooth that Snorpy is "lost in a maze of his own making" and that he desperately needs therapy. His paranoia and anxiety has also caused problems for both him and Chandlo before. He refuses to go outside to get fresh air, is overly mistrustful of strangers, has often made rash decisions and most likely several other issues that we didn't see for whatever reason. And on Chandlo's end, he's at his wits end over worrying about Snorpy and trying to help him, to the point that Shelda has to tell him that he's not a medical professional and thus can't give Snorpy the help he needs beyond supporting him. However, as the DLC reveals, there actually is a secret society involved with the bugsnax and Snaktooth Island that are now spying on him and the other survivors if you get the Golden Ending. They aren't called the Grumpinati, however.
  • Sleeping Single: He and Chandlo are in love, but they sleep in separate beds in their room.
  • String Theory: Has a corkboard loaded with papers on everything from U.F.O.s to mind-controlling radio waves sent through tooth fillings. The Flavor Text notes how he has somehow connected every random conspiracy into one big web.
  • Tinfoil Hat: Has one sitting on his desk back in his cabin in Sugarpine Woods, with "antenna" sculpted into it to boot. It later sits on the post of his bed when he moves back to Snaxburg.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With Chandlo.

    Shellsy "Shelda" Woolbag
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shelda.png
One who is called Shelda exists beyond the self.
"A perplexing prophet. Doesn't eat Bugsnax. Likes riddles, discipline, and proper back support."
Voiced by: Debra Wilson

An elderly Grumpus that joined the expedition because she won a raffle. Fashions herself as a sort of a spiritual guru in service of "Mother-Naturae" and speaks against Bugsnax.
  • Chewing the Scenery: Really hams it up when she's sermonizing to the others at times with a lot of hand-waving too. She later admits that it's all to make her seem more omniscient and all-powerful because no one ever listened to her before when she was just Shellsy Woolbag from nowheresville.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Despite being regarded as nothing but a kooky New-Age Retro Hippie fraud by others (not like she isn't), her sermons that Bugsnax are unnatural vessels of desire that infest and consume you from within are proven right. She's very unhappy to realize how right she was all along, but in the Golden Ending, she's able to use her experiences to write and publish a novel about them.
  • Granola Girl: She acts as a stereotypical one. She wears a peace symbol necklace and constantly spews spiritual nonsense about "Mother Naturae", but she also constantly breaks the mystic facade she puts up. She also follows a form of vegan diet of sorts by abhorring Bugsnax (or claims to, but she isn't happy about succumbing to the allure of Bugsnax).
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: She genuinely believes that Bugsnax are dangerous and corrupting, even putting up "The Great and Wise Shelda" act in hopes of getting others to listen to her, but she still eats them in secret and regrets her failure to be strong enough to follow her own teachings. But it eventually turns out she is completely right.
  • Ice-Cream Koan: She spouts a lot of supposedly metaphorical jargon and ambiguously ominous-sounding nonsense. During her interview, the main character even has the option to call her out for being a complete fraud. If she survives the events of the game, she'll wonder if things would have been different if she had just skipped the riddles and directly told everyone the dangers she predicted.
  • Implausible Deniability: She absolutely refuses to admit that she has been eating the Bugsnax you've been donating, despite the fact that eating them very obviously turns your body parts into them. Even if she succumbs to the Bugsnax with her snakified body falling apart little by little, she continues to rant about how pure she is to the very end.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Acts like a mystical, all-seeing, and all-powerful sage because she thinks no one would care about her and what she has to say if she acted normally.
  • Mad Oracle: Chandlo seems to believe she can see the future and she's often raving vaguely about the dangers of Bugsnax and some impending cataclysmic event. While the "mad" part turns out just be an act, and she doesn't view herself as an oracle, her ominous predictions turn out to be eerily accurate to what ends up happening. The Isle of BIGsnax explains this by revealing that she first learned about Snaktooth from Snaktooth survivors, who warned anyone who would listen against consuming the "toxin" that is Bugsnax. Though Shelda does mention that they were also frustratingly vague about what would actually happen if one chose to consume them anyway...
  • Nothing but Skin and Bones: Has the thinnest, most emaciated build out of all the Grumpuses you meet, likely due to her refusal to eat Bugsnax while meditating in the desert and only having sauce plants as a source of food. In the DLC, she mentions that she has osteoporosis.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: During her discussion with Chandlo in the DLC about him trying his best to "fix" Snorpy's paranoia, she realizes that the topic is too serious for her to keep up her mystic mentor act, that Chandlo might misunderstand, and tells him directly that he can't and shouldn't try to fix Snorpy; that's the responsibility of medical professionals.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Sometimes her act slips and she briefly talks like a normal person.
"In seeking inner peace, Shelda has renounced material temptations. So it is that Shelda is really grumping hungry."
  • Thought-Aversion Failure: Maybe meditating six hours a day while repeating the mantra "Don't think about Bugsnax" isn't the best way to rid yourself of the desire to eat them.
  • Trrrilling Rrrs: Occasionally does this.

    Floofty Fizzlebean
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/floofty.png
Come, let's finish our work.
"A fiercely dedicated scientist. Disrespectful of others (myself included). Likes intellectuals, empiricism, and dark humor."
Voiced by: Casey Mongillo

A scientific Grumpus that joined the expedition to study the biology and capabilities of the Bugsnax.
  • Alliterative Name: Floofty Fizzlebean.
  • An Arm and a Leg: They literally saw off their leg as part of an experiment they were conducting. One sidequest also has them try to saw off their head. The golden ending shows that when the Bugsnax wore off, the leg they cut off didn't come back either.
  • Autocannibalism: Beffica claims she saw them dragging a severed leg along the beach at night and taking a bite out of it. This, combined with the revelation that they sawed off their leg for an experiment, implies that they ate their own lower leg.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: While they can easily dismiss other Grumpuses as frightened or ignorant, they can't bring themself to do the same for their brother Snorpy, since they consider him to be just as intelligent as they are, and the one time he calls them out to their face, it's out of genuine concern for their life. At the party before the final level, they can be seen awkwardly trying to apologize to Snorpy. It turns out to be partially to have him to peer review their research, but even then, it's a surprise that they trust his feedback at all.
  • British Stuffiness: Has a slight British accent and is a bit condescending, arrogant and short-sighted. They get better.
  • The Dreaded: Seems to have this reputation among most of the other Grumpuses, being a Mad Scientist with no regard for anyone's safety, even their own. At the very least, Triffany seems to appreciate their willingness to learn history and fondness of bad science puns.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: They show up when you first enter the beach to give you the Snaktivator and give you a tutorial on how it works, yet are one of the last Grumpuses to return to the village.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Loose as their ethical standards may be, they do acknowledge that the idea of testing the possible link between Grumpus sacrifice and snak gigantification would be a step too far.
  • For Science!: They perform rather extreme experiments of dubious ethical standards which the other Grumpuses all object to, but all for the goal of bettering the fields of science. They end up sawing off their leg, and follow that up by attempting to saw off their head to test Bugsnax' regenerative properties.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: One of their sidequests requires feeding them to fully snakify their whole body, and they request "only the sweetest, most filling Bugsnax" for it. The Journalist, in one dialogue option, notes that this seems uncharacteristically sentimental.
Floofty: Consider it a personal request. This could be my last meal, after all. (chuckles)
  • Insufferable Genius: Part of the reason why Floofty's studies are shunned and the other Grumpuses (including Floofty's own brother) usually avoid them is because they're always absolutely certain their theories are correct, and insults others for suggesting otherwise.
Personality Quiz Result: "You can empirically prove that you're better than everybody on the planet. You tell jokes that only you laugh at."
  • Jerkass: Can hardly speak two full sentences to someone without patronizing or insulting them. They resolve to get better about this by the end, having realized it's hypocritical to want to help other Grumpuses through their scientific advancements while still being unwilling to connect with them. If you get the good ending, they even become a biology professor.
  • Jerkass Realization: Only realizes they've gone too far after Snorpy shuts off the machine they've set up to decapitate themself and chews them out for being way too comfortable with the idea of dying just to test the Bugsnax' regenerative capabilities.
  • Just Think of the Potential!: Touched upon in the DLC when discussing their past: When discussing how Snorpy's paranoia is a result of him being a whistleblower about a governmental project the siblings worked upon which turned to be corrupt and how they were targeted by a smear campaign to discredit them. Floofty admits they would have largely preferred for the project to succeed despite the less than savory uses the project could have led. Shelda points out that's easy for them to say when they aren't the one living with the consequences of that action.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The other Grumpi don't let up about the fact that they ate their own leg, with some even assuming them to be a full on cannibal. While unsettling and unethical, this is only one of the times they'll put research before their own safety and well-being.
  • Only Friend: The only Grumpus they have a reasonably amiable relationship with is Triffany, mostly because they both have scientific backgrounds and like to share knowledge (and puns) from time to time. That said, even Triffany thinks their methods are "extreme".
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Since their experiments are so dangerous, nobody wants to volunteer to be a test subject. Because of this, Floofty has to conduct experiments on their own body, including amputating their own leg. In The Isle of BIGsnax expansion, one of their tests involves having The Journalist throw a jar of Shrink Spice (which is later revealed to contain sulfuric acid) at them.
  • Queer Colors: Floofty is non-binary, and their color scheme matches the non-binary pride flag: black from their goggles, purple from their body, white from their eyes and hair, and yellow from their nose.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Frequently speaks in technical jargon, often followed by condescendingly simplifying what they just said into borderline babytalk.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Floofty certainly thinks of themselves as this, as they admit they think of the other residents of Snaxburg as "ignorant, frightened children" at the end of their sidequest. The only other Grumpi they seem to respect as equal are Eggabell, Triffany, and (very reluctantly) Snorpy, who all share a scientific (or medical in Eggabell's case) background with them.
  • Tin Man: For someone who abhors giving into emotions and opinions and favors sound logic and scientific evidence, they can't stop being condescending and self-righteous and snide. If they survive the Bugsnax' attack on Snaxburg, they'll realize that they're completely at odds with themself and resolve to be calmer and more respectful going forward.

    Eggabell Batternugget

Stop sneaking up on me or I'll quarantine you!
"Well-rounded, but often scrambles to keep herself together. Likes sunny days, good stories, and self-reliance."
Voiced by: Fryda Wolff

Elizabert's right-hand girl, partner, and doctor for the village.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Liz calls her Bell.
  • Egg Folk: Eggabell has a round and white-furred body like an egg, a shiny egg-shaped nose, speaks with lots of egg-related puns. That said, she's still recognizably a Grumpus like everyone else.
  • Eyepatch After Time Skip: When you finally meet Eggabell in person, she's wearing an eyepatch. This goes uncommented on until she explains it to Lizbert. Turns out she only got pink eye while on the mountain, and keeps the eyepatch on because she thinks it looks cool.
  • Fusion Dance: Of a fashion. With the transformed Bugsnax monstrosity that is Lizbert saying that she's losing control, Eggabell resolves to stay and help her out rather than leave her behind. She then somehow manages to merge herself with Liz's Bugsnax body and form a second torso sticking out of it. The two of them are certain that they'll be able to withstand the corruption of the Bugsnax when they're working together. The ending credits of the good ending suggests that they're successful and that they've even returned back to normal after the events of the game.
  • Guilt Complex: Has a bit of one, with blaming herself before the events of the game for when the fellow expedition members get hurt and feeling she isn't strong enough to keep up with Lizbert. And this continues in the present, manifesting in an I Work Alone attitude that only breaks when she is faced with an obstacle that needs multiple Grumpuses to overcome.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Despite being a widely-respected town doctor, she suffers depressive episodes and feelings of worthlessness; especially when she can't help everyone at once, or has to rely on Liz to catch Bugsnax for her.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Her conversations with others often involve a decent number of egg-based puns with the recording of her exercising with Chandlo being a notable offender.
  • Light Is Good: White-furred and selfless to a fault, always putting the needs of others before her own.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: The Feminine to Lizbert's Masculine, being a sensitive and emotional nurse.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Prior to the start of the game, she used to struggle to keep up with Lizbert when going hunting with her. At some point, she requested that Chandlo help her get more physically fit so she could be less of a burden. By the time The Journalist meets up with her, she's been surviving all alone at the peak of an icy mountain for weeks, searching for the missing Lizbert and living off of the nearby Bugsnax if her snakified limbs are any indication.
  • You're Just Jealous: One of the recordings is of her lashing out and accusing Elizabert of this when the latter shows suspicion and hostility towards Floofty for having Eggabell participate in their experiments, which radically altered Egg's appearance and even her personality. Eggabell is implied to have immediately regretted this after the recording ends.

    Elizabert Megafig (UNMARKED SPOILERS)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elizabert.png
Together, you and I will share the incredible tale of Bugsnax!
"The missing leader. A passion for adventure and discovery. Likes nature documentaries, the unknown, and cool hats."
Voiced by: Helen Sadler

The leader of the Snaktooth Island expedition and the one who invites the player to join them. Elizabert and Eggabell go missing after a nasty falling out amongst the Snaxburg villagers, forcing the Journalist to try and find clues that can lead them find Elizabert.
  • Academic Athlete: Snorpy describes her as being intelligent to match his wits and strong enough to match Chandlo in arm-wrestling.
  • The Ace: Strong, intelligent, charismatic, and the most skilled catcher of Bugsnax before The Journalist came along. She was the most respected member of Snaxburg, though some villagers have their doubts.
  • Adventurer Outfit: She has the safari hat, a scarf, and a utility belt fitting for an explorer. When she's later revealed to be transformed into an enormous Bugsnax after falling deep underground, she's missing her hat but retains the scarf and utility belt.
  • Assimilation Backfire: She ended up being forcibly turned into a Bugsnax monstrosity, but instead of a complete Loss of Identity that would usually follow, through sheer force of will, she managed to gain limited control over the Bugsnax by becoming their new Queen.
  • The Atoner: Blames herself for bringing everyone to a dangerous island where they ended up trying to resolve their personal issues by consuming what are actually parasites. She tries to take responsibility by staying behind to restrain the Bugsnax as much as possible while everyone else escapes.
  • Awesome Aussie: The leader of the expedition crew as well as their most competent and respected member complete with a noticeable accent.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Cromdo and Floofty seem to have a dim view of her and claims she's not all what she's cracked up to be. She ends up having the same view of herself. As much as she had the respect of all the members of Snaxburg, she ultimately helped doom everyone into filling their bodies with mind-altering parasites rather than actually trying to help them sort out their personal issues. She believes this to be the reason why the town fell apart after she went missing.
  • Fusion Dance: An unintended one; after landing in the Undersnax and being force-fed hundreds of Bugsnax, she becomes a monstrosity that resembles a fusion of the four Legendary Bugsnax. The form itself is never fought against, mind you. Then there's also Eggabell deciding to help out her girlfriend by letting herself get assimilated into her Queen body, giving her more control and focus.
  • The Leader: In addition to being the leader of the crew itself, she was the one holding all of them together. After she disappears, they all split up.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: The Masculine to Eggabell's Feminine, being a somewhat tomboyish explorer and leader figure.
  • Noodle Incident: She got famous in the past when she discovered some lost civilization beneath "Grumpsylvania", and had an unfortunate misadventure trying to find "Grumplantis".
  • Scarf of Asskicking: A strong, skilled adventurer who wears a pink scarf. The Journalist's sketch of her in their journal even seems to depict it billowing in the wind.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: Attempted to stay behind to keep the Bugsnax from harming the other Grumpuses with Eggabell ultimately helping out too. The two of them are revealed to have survived and cleaned off the Snax in the Golden Ending thankfully.

Others

    C. Clumby Clumbernut
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clumby.png
Wow. That's your new lead? Another monster hunt...
"My editor. Used to love Mondays, now despises them. Likes hot scoops, accolades, and slamming a table dramatically."
Voiced by: Barbara Goodson

An employee at GNN and the supervisor of the player character.
  • Alliterative Name: C. Clumby Clumbernut. Seemingly a shout-out to J. Jonah Jameson.
  • Da Editor: The player's boss at GNN, and also (understandably) harsh with them for having to deal with the fallout of their stories.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She apparently didn't account for the Journalist to survive their excursion to Snaktooth Island, since she told them they were legally dead when they came back.
  • Expy: of Garfield, being orange, grumpy, hateful of Mondays, and apparently likes lasagna and coffee.
  • Foil: Implied to be one to the Journalist. If she was the reporter Alegander was talking to in the Triplicate Space recordings, then she also went on a team expedition to Snaktooth to learn what makes it tick. Unlike the Journalist, however, Alegander was there to stop the spread of Snaktooth's secrets personally and indict her into the Snakolytes to keep them secret.
  • Good Is Not Nice: If she is a part of the Snakolytes along with Alegander Jamfoot, then it's clear she has good intentions for the rest of the world. She's just got a very bad case of grumpy old woman syndrome.
  • Grumpy Old Woman: She's seen it all and is specifically tired of the player character chasing rumors that turn out to be bogus.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Assuming she's the reporter Alegander was talking to in the recordings in the Triplicate Space, she was one in her younger days.
  • Mole in Charge: At first, the player is led to believe that she's a Grumpinati plant that sent the Journalist on a suicide mission, but she's actually from a completely different organization called the Snakolytes, a group descended from Grumpbeard and his crew that tasked themselves with guarding Snaktooth Island's secrets and protecting the world from Bugsnax until they can control them. The reason why she was certain the Journalist would die was because she genuinely thought coming back from Snaktooth was unthinkable.
  • Must Have Caffeine: The personality quiz (which has since been taken down, sadly) mentions under Clumby's result: "You're three pots of coffee deep and if you have your way, you'll never sleep again."
Clumby: [Snaktooth Island] is like me before I get my coffee. Deadly.
  • Press Hat: Wears a reporter's hat, fitting for her place of employment. There's one just like it in a room in the Triplicate Space.
  • Repetitive Name: Clum Clumby Clumbernut.

    The Voice (UNMARKED SPOILERS)

Alegander Jamfoot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alegander_jamfoot.png

Voiced by: Tom Taylorson

A crypto-snakological researcher and archivist for the Snakolytes, a group descended from Grumpbeard's crew in charge of protecting Snaktooth Island's secrets and protecting the world from Bugsnax until they can control them.

  • A Degree in Useless: Bemoans his degree in library sciences.
  • Cabin Fever: Played for Laughs. He's evidently gone a bit stir-crazy being stationed on Snaktooth Island by himself for so long.
"I've named [the Cappucceetle] Joey Quickbeans. He is my best friend. I have been here for a very long time."
  • The Comically Serious: Despite having the air of an intimidating cult agent working from the shadows, he drops one or two lines that are sure to get a chuckle. One example is him wishing for a weekly stipend for basically surpassing everyone else in his organization.
  • Employee of the Month: On one of the walls in the Triplicate Space are numerous identical photos of him as the Employee of the Month. The joke being that he's the only employee, and he put them there himself. It also makes it clear he's been stuck on Snaktooth for a really long time.
  • Good All Along: Potentially. It initially seems from the Metal Gear-style ominous post-credits phonecall that he and Clumby are a part of the dreaded Grumpinati that Snorpy warns you about, but it appears the Snakolytes are benevolent in nature, trying to protect the rest of the world from the Bugsnax until they can learn to control them properly. On top of that, he really hates when people think that the Snakolytes and the Grumpinati are connected.
  • Kicked Upstairs: Despite how important his job undoubtedly is, he views being sent to Snaktooth Island to learn about the Triplicate Space as this. Not helping is the fact that the Snakolytes use it as a break room.
  • Meaningful Name: Alegander is derived from "Alexander", a name that means "Protector of man". He's the second major agent seen of the organization made to protect the world from the threat Bugsnax pose until they're properly controlled.
  • Must Have Caffeine: All of his pictures on the Employee of the Month wall feature his mugshot, which has him holding his Cappucceetle companion in his paws.
  • Mysterious Watcher: He spied on Bronica's expedition when she, Clumby and potentially some others went to Snaktooth Island. He said it was because he'd been stuck there alone for such a long time and had no other entertainment, though. He also clearly knows about Lizbert's expedition, judging by The Stinger you can get if you receive the Golden Ending and listen to all ten of his tapes in the Triplicate Space.
  • Only in It for the Money: The only reason he took a job with the Snakolytes was because of a magazine ad for an (unpaid) internship.
  • Skewed Priorities: The Golden Ending has him complaining to Clumby about an invasion of privacy rather than his organization's secrets being revealed.
  • Starving Student: He's hoping that the third Bugsnax Queen will bring prosperity before his student loans are due.
  • The Voice: You only hear his voice and he never appears in person, although you can see a picture of him on the Employee of the Month wall.
