It may also contain unmarked spoilers. You may wish to finish the manga before reading.

    Shiori Kirihito
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbdw_shiori.png
”Shiori is certain that… Shiori has gone through so much to reach today… just for this day. Shiori never would have thought that it could have been so beautiful… not killing someone, but using all my strength to help those I love keep living.”

Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (Japanese)

A character introduced in the second half of Remix Heart and appearing in Variable Heart. Initially appearing before the Team Remix Heart as a polite and humble new transfer student and becoming Mai and Kajun's roommate, she then shows her true nature to Mai - being an assassin sent to kill Jin Kisaragi. But after Mai understands her inner feelings, Shiori softens and then goes to Mai's side. Is partnered by Chachakaka, another assassin who handles recon job and assists her.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: She points out that she's immune to getting poisoned. Her flashback shows her younger self getting surrounded by poisonous snakes, which likely contributes to this.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Variable Heart ch. 5, she and Taro save Kajun from being captured by the Zero Squadron. In ch. 7, she, again with Taro, save Mai from being strangled to death by Ragna.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Beneath her courteous persona lies a calculating mind of an assassin. She ditches the sheep's clothing later.
  • Black Cloak: In her past, she's shown wearing this, complete with a Cool Mask.
  • Combat Stilettos: Can move quite quickly even while wearing these. She even uses them to brutally stomp on a NOL officer's hand.
  • Costume Evolution: She gets a new outfit in Variable Heart that consists of a dark grey garb that makes her look like a ninja.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When her past is shown through Mai when she licked Shiori's blood, we see her being put in Training from Hell from a young age and being treated harshly by her own parents.
  • Foregone Conclusion: She's tasked to assassinate Jin. Of course, by the time the games start, he's shown to be alive and well.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Keeps her hair in small pigtails inside of large ribbons.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Initially appears this way, but then quickly subverted later.
  • Heel–Face Turn: When Mai gets a glimpse of Shiori's past, she sympathizes with her. Shiori then cries as she realizes that Mai really meant it when she said that she'd like to help her whenever Shiori has a problem, and on the morning after she becomes Mai's ally (although she's still going to kill Jin).
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In Chapter 24 of Remix Heart, when Cypher is going to kill Mai, Shiori Took The Bullet for her. She lives.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Possibly; Mai never shows any attraction to Shiori and instead falls in love with Taro. But the manga is vague about whether Mai becoming female made her cease being attracted to girls at all (or ever was) or just doesn't like Shiori that way.
  • Jerkass: After her Heel–Face Turn, she stops hiding behind her polite persona and defaults to her constant bitchy nature.
  • Master Poisoner: Is knowledgeable about multiple kinds of poisons.
  • New Transfer Student: Comes to the Military Academy in order to assassinate Jin.
  • Professional Killer: the Kirihito family has been one since generations mainly for Hazuki family, and Shiori is no exception.
  • Punny Name: "Kirihito" may derive from "hitokiri", or "homicide".
  • The Rival: Declares Taro as this as Mai shows some affection towards him.
  • Sadist: Is shown to be one when her true nature is shown. She poisoned a NOL officer and then tortures him, while detailing how she'll going to inflict horrible pain on him and he'll forget everything due to said poison. She also mentions to Mai that not only she'll turn Mai's friends into her mindless puppets and have them kill Jin, but she'll make Tsubaki realize it once she does the deed. And she does all that while maintaining her polite tone.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She's clearly Mai-sexual. This is proven when she finds out that Mai's a man all along; she just doesn't care and says that she still loves Mai even if she was a man.
  • Sixth Ranger: For the Team Remix Heart.
  • Skinship Grope: Her first introduction with the Team Remix Heart involves her sneaking behind Mai and then doing this to her, telling her to not let her guard down. Later after her Heel–Face Turn she occasionally does this as a sign of affection.
  • The Sneaky Guy: Pretty much.
  • Sore Loser: When she loses to Taro in the shaved ice eating contest, she shoved some shaved ice onto his face and then gloats about it.
  • Tyke Bomb: Her Dark and Troubled Past turns her into this, making her an assassin from a young age. However Mai manages to defuse her by understanding her feelings.

Supporting Characters

    Taro Sasaga'e
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbdw_taro.png
”Oh no, Jinjin. Didn’t make you mad, did I? So sorry! Forgive me?”

Voiced by: Chiharu Sawashiro (Japanese)

A character appearing in both Remix Heart and Variable Heart. Jin Kisaragi's roommate from the Academy days, and a member of the student council. Has an amiable and easy-going personality, and cooks for the team. Seemingly, Kagura Mutsuki's relative.

  • Accidental Kiss: With Mai in chapter 12 of Remix Heart. He seemed to treat it as such since he never made a big deal out of it afterwards. Or maybe because he is too fixated on Jin to notice.
  • Ambiguously Bi: There's his Accidental Kiss and subtle interest with Mai. On the other hand, he is also extremely close to Jin (a little too extremely close, mind you) and takes his "secret" bodyguard duty to him very seriously.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Is very tan, especially noticeable in comparison to his relative Kagura.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Variable Heart ch. 5, he and Shiori save Kajun from being captured by the Zero Squadron. In ch.7, he again with Shiori, save Mai from being strangled to death by Ragna.
  • Big Eater: Is known for this. In one omake, when he, Jin and another roommate goes shopping for supplies, he's always shown buying some snacks. He even wins a shaved ice-eating contest against Shiori, and later other people as well.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Even in the academy years, Jin is still stronger than Taro as seen during Jin's Yukianesa-induced rampage. Despite that, Taro still does his duty.
  • Bodyguard Crush: He is Jin's "Secret" Bodyguard and extremely heavily implied. Take note that he never made a big deal about his Accidental Kiss with Mai and the two seemed to have maintained a strictly friendly and professional relationship as of present-time. But when Jin was in trouble? Good God, he literally had a My Greatest Failure moment and had to be snapped out of it by Mai.
  • Canon Immigrant: At least given mention in Chronophantasma by Noel and Makoto.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He can be quite silly and undignified, but when encountered with danger, he'll be quick to show his battle Ars Magus skills.
  • Hero Secret Service: Works as one for Jin, under Kagura's orders.
  • Idiot Hero/Dumb Is Good: Shades of this.
  • Mundane Utility: Somewhat inverted: He's quite apt in using Ars Magus in combat, but he can't open an Ars Magus letter meant for him.
  • My Greatest Failure: Averted. After one incident where Jin got badly injured, Taro had a rare moment of self-pity where he says that he had failed completely due to not being able to protect Jin, but Mai managed to snap him out of it.
  • Nice Guy: Never fails to be amiable. Even when Shiori openly threatens him over winning Mai's love, he just takes it easy.
  • The Nicknamer: Calls Jin "Jinjin", Mai "Maimai" and Shiori "Shioshio". Also "Big Bro" for Kagura. In Variable Heart he also has "Junjun" for Kajun and "Bad-guy-face Bro" for Ragna. In Alternative: Dark War he gives Juusan the nickname "Juju".
  • Power Fist/Tricked-Out Gloves: He has a pair of gloves which he uses for using his Ars Magus.
  • Razor Floss: Specializes in making magic strings that can cut things. He can also use them to restrain people.
  • Secret Stab Wound: In ch. 10 he has to hold Mai, Bell and Kajun while avoiding Fuzzy's attacks. After some moments talking, he says "Guess I'm at my limits..." and only then Mai notices several cuts on his body.
  • Ship Tease: Has a lot of Ho Yay moments with Jin and has been teased with Mai, as well.
  • Team Chef: He's the one doing the cooking for his roommates. This becomes problematic in one chapter when Mai, right after eating Noel's cooking, accidentally kisses Taro and passes Noel's horrendous cooking skills to him. It ends with he and his roommates getting bedridden.
  • The Glomp: He loves to hug Jin every chance he gets much to the latter's annoyance.
  • The Tease: He is mostly this towards Jin. More than a little bit, too.
    • Not to mention this gem in the beach scene in where he is literally tempting Jin to strip nakednote  and take a swim. Jin being his usual self just denied him of that pleasure. Taro's reaction afterwards is nothing but utter disappointment.
Taro: "This is great! Why don't you try making one too, Jinjin?"
    Jin: "... I'm fine."
    Taro: "Ehhh? Aren't you hot~? I bet you're over-heating in that, huh~~??"
    Jin: "... Not really."
    Taro: "*Bummed Face* Jeez..."
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards his mission of being Jin's closet bodyguard. He is even willing to sacrifice his life in order to keep him safe - up to and including taste-testing a supposed porridge that is "believed" to be poisoned by Shiori intended to kill Jin. In Kagura's side story in CPEX, he has a talk over the phone with Taro off-screen; Taro apparently still does his job even during the Ikaruga War.
  • Won't Take "Yes" for an Answer: In Alternative: Dark War, he and Shiori end up transported to a Phantom Field and meet up a group consisting of Rei, Juusan and Drei. When asking if all five of them could form a team together, he completely expected the aloof Juusan to say no only to realize that she accepted without any hestitation.

    Chachakaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbdw_chachakaka.png
“As you might expect, bringing you two back was pretty rough! So you oughta praise meow!”

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (Japanese)

A character introduced in the second half of Remix Heart. She transfers into the Military Academy alongside Shiori. She is secretly an assassin who supports Shiori in her mission to kill Jin Kisaragi. She was also assigned to kill Mai by her father.

  • Big Damn Heroes: She appears to save Team Remix Heart from Cypher’s alchemical barrier, and later she carried Mai and Shiori from the entrance of the Cauldron as they fainted after the encounter with Cypher.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Like Shiori, she pretends to be nice but is actually a shrewd assassin.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Whenever she has no job to do, she's usually seen napping.
  • Cat Girl: A given being a Kaka.
  • Custom Uniform: On two levels. Her Military Academy uniform is customized by her wearing the signature Kaka jacket and her Kaka outfit is unique in that it is open with a school uniform underneath.
  • Expressive Mask: The same one all Kakas wear.
  • In the Hood: Always wears her hood, even in the bath.
  • New Transfer Student: Comes to the Military Academy partway through Remix Heart
  • Only One Name: Like all Kakas. Her full name is simply “Chachakaka.”
  • Professional Killer: She is Shiori’s partner in assassinations; she was also hired to "assassinate" Mai (in truth, she's giving Mai a Secret Test of Character from her dad). Unlike Shiori however, she specializes in reconnaissance and information gathering as opposed to getting her hands dirty; while she can fight, she becomes easily demotivated if it takes longer than she wanted.
  • Third-Person Person: Refers to herself as “Chacha.”
  • Verbal Tic: Shares the Kaka Clan’s trademark “meow.”
  • Whip Sword: Her knives are attached to extendable chains so they could be used at long range.

    Bell
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bell_2.jpg
”Danger… Must leave this place quickly… that thing is dangerous to “you” as well…”

A character introduced in Variable Heart. She is a Dimension Boundary Prime Field Device Embryo Storage. She was locked in a coffin to be sent to Kagutsuchi but was set free when Jubei attacked the train she was on. Mai Natsume then decided to follow her in order to protect her.

  • Artificial Human: A given being another Prime Field Device.
  • Chained by Fashion: She still has the handcuffs from when she was trapped in a coffin around her wrists.
  • Death of Personality: She explains to Trinity that the personality/consciousness of hers act as a "limiter" to the Luna-Sena program inside her (and to delete the program in case it falls to the wrong hands), and because of that she doesn't expect to "live" long, especially if Trinity was to inhabit her body. She (Bell) is also fine with it, as even though Trinity (indirectly) made her go through tough times, she gets to interact with people and understand their hearts, and even got a friend from it.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: While she starts off as an Emotionless Girl, she slowly warms up to Mai as she learns about the world.
  • Emotionless Girl: Starts off as this since she has pretty much no knowledge about the world.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Since Central Fiction shows that Mai calls Platinum "Bell" and revealed (in story mode) that she was empty by the time Jubei and Trinity put the latter into her body (which, as VH stated, deletes Bell's personality and causes Luna and Sena to awaken), her soul and personality will not survive the events of Variable Heart.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: She doesn’t have a name so Mai calls her Bell because of the large bell on her collar.
  • Mysterious Waif: A little (artificial) girl who's important to the plot, and her true nature is the reason Meifang looks for her.
  • Soul Jar: Jubei intended to make her one for Trinity. At the end of the manga, they succeeded. This comes at the cost of ceasing Bell's personality.
  • You Are Number 6: She is designated Dimensional Boundary Prime Field Device Embryo Storage Test Model -Es- No. 28.

    Rin Hazuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cts1siz.png
"But since Mai knows his true strength the best, there is no reason to be worried about her."

A character introduced in Variable Heart, she's Mai's mother.

  • Education Mama: She apparently plans to train Mai to get tougher so she can take on her father's challenge.
  • Foil: For her husband. While he believes in Tough Love for his child, she is very loving and nurturing towards Mai.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: Speaks in a very polite and dignified way, befitting her status as part of the family of Duodecim.
  • Idiot Hair: Seems to be hereditary between her and her child.
  • Power Copying: She has an ability called Vision that lets her copy any techniques she has seen. However, it can't work on magic.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She really looks like Mai if the latter lets her hair down.

    Hoichiro Hazuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hoichiro_hazuki_scan.png
"...who said "get out"? I asked, "what are you doing?""

A character introduced in Variable Heart, he's Mai's father and the head of the noble Hazuki family. Also once the supreme commander of NOL military, and holds the rank of "Butei" (Military Lord).

  • Deus Exit Machina: He apparently wanted to help Mai during the last chapters where she's having the climactic battles, but he and his wife are being held down by the visiting Relius.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's actually seen first in Remix Heart, but he wasn't named and only appears in one of Mai's flashbacks.
  • Retired Badass: He may no longer work in the NOL, but he's still able to tank Mai's attack without budging an inch. He's also revealed to be the one who stopped Azrael in the past (although it apparently isn't common knowledge in universe).
  • Social Darwinist: Somewhat. He's a big believer in personal strength, as, as a high-ranking member of NOL and one of the heads of the Duodecim, he's a big target for assassination, and as Shiori puts it, "if one lets their guard down they'll die." He also tries making his child strong in any way necessary.
  • Tough Love: He's big on this for his child. As Chachakaka revealed in Remix Heart's epilogue, he may be harsh (like calling Mai a disgrace to the family), but he actually wants the best for Mai and her life. He's apparently concerned that Meifang managed to corner her (as part of the Hazuki family) and thus he motivates her to get stronger... by threatening to kill her friends if she doesn't manage to even make him step out of her assault after a week's pass.note

NOL Staff and Teachers

    Estella Mc Kenzie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/estella.jpg
”Analysis unknown…!? The so-called wondrous Librarium is crap. Just what is the meaning of this?”

A character who appears in Remix Heart. Also known as Emma, she's a professor at the Military Academy who handles the Ars Magus assessment of the students and teaches several classes.

  • Deep Cover Agent: She secretly reports what happens at the academy to Kagura Mutsuki. She refers to herself as "Agent E" when talking to him on the phone.
  • Hot Teacher: She is very attractive, though her stern demeanor intimidates her students.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Beneath her exercise room she has a secret room where she keeps a large amount of cute clothes. She becomes furious when she finds out that Team Remix Heart went into it.

    Fuzzies
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbdw_fuzzy.png
””Mai Natsume”… What an interesting girl. So she is a “Grimoire.””

Voiced by: Aimi Tanaka (Japanese)

A character introduced in the Variable Heart, Fuzzy is an assassin working for Meifang.

  • Achilles' Heel: Legacy Weapons (especially with Immortal Breaker) are the only things that can really hurt him. He's considerably wary of such weapons, but he also views them as a challenge.
  • Animate Dead: He can summon people he has killed as ghouls. He can also summon a skeleton of a dragon. By the nature of his ability, his dead summons have no souls and thus Ragna's Soul Eater is ineffective against them.
  • Artificial Human: Or rather Artificial Vampire. He is not a real vampire. Ragna calls him an "imitation" and sure enough he is No.16 in a series of artificial beings. They're apparently created from Black Beast remnants, which also explains their regenerative ability.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Has a very androgynous look. In fact, if not for the rather noticeable bulge in his crotch it would be very easy to mistake him for a girl.
  • Enfant Terrible: Looks like a cute little boy (with mannerisms to match) but is extremely dangerous.
  • Healing Factor: When Ragna slices his stomach, the wound closes pretty quickly. Ragna states that he hates fighting vampires due to this.
  • Just Toying with Them: He refers to fighting his foes with "playing with them". However, in ch. 10, he's forced to get serious when he figures that his opponent has a Legacy Weapon; he even mentally apologizes to Meifang that he might have to kill them against her wishes.
  • Razor Wings: He can use his wings for offense and defense.
  • Sadist: Enjoys toying with a group of NOL soldiers he has been ordered to kill before he feeds on them.
  • Stripperiffic: Look at his outfit.
  • Undead Child: Is a vampire.
  • Vampiric Draining: After feeding, the corpses of his victims are left as withered husks.
  • You Are Number 6: He is "No.16."

    Meifang Lapislazuli
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbdw_meifang.png
”Mai Natsume. For the sake of my longstanding desire I am going to have you hand over your body to me.”

Voiced by: Shizuka Itō (Japanese)

A character introduced in the Variable Heart but who also appears in the Spiral Shift LN. The leader of the Novus Orbis Librarium's Zero Squadron, which is the NOL secret police.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Leader of the Zero Squadron and has the power to match that position.
  • Ax-Crazy: Is extremely violent and clearly insane. Even Hazama thinks she might be too unstable.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a white one with gold highlights.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: A variation. She stops Mai's Outseal with her palm by focusing strengthening Ars Magus on the spear's edge. Downplayed in that her arm is still damaged when she does this.
  • Berserk Button: Any sign of disloyalty towards the Imperator is met with immediate execution.
  • Big Bad: Is the main adversary in Variable Heart.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Villainous version. After Fuzzy is downed by Mai's attack, Meifang intervenes before Mai can finish him.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Her One-Winged Angel gives her these.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Really enjoys both inflicting and receiving pain. The fact her ability allows her not to feel pain frustrates her to no end.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: During the final battle, she got distracted with an image of Lord Tenjo. Mai sees this as an opening to deal a heavy blow with her spear. Said distraction came from her deepest desire: to meet with her lord again.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers one to Kagura offscreen.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The way she says she wants Mai’s body is suspect to say the least.
  • Dragon Lady: She's the main villain and her straight black hair and name suggest she's ethnically Chinese.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Her past shows that she had a friend she loves very much: the very Lord Tenjo. Even when they were separated from each other, Meifang still loves her. It turned into Love Makes You Evil later on, however.
  • Feel No Pain: Her power allows her to feel no pain, something that frustrates her since she enjoys pain.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her bodysuit leaves nothing to the imagination.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her long hair is tied in twintails. She's a mature lady and thus not really girlish, however.
  • Horns of Villainy: She wears a headpiece that looks like horns.
  • Just You, Me, and My GUARDS!: In ch. 11, it seems like Meifang is going to go against Ragna, Mai and their companions... but then she summons the Zero Squadron.
  • Light Is Not Good: She's associated with the gold and white-colored Zero Squadron who upholds order. She's also a real creep and a very ruthless warrior.
  • Mind over Matter: Appears to have the power to inflict telekinetic blows, in one case tearing open a large hole straight through a character's chest. The source of this power is currently unknown.
  • Motive Rant: Around the later chapters, she blurts out her motives: growing disillusioned with the Ikaruga Civil War (especially for what it did to her dearest Tenjo), she concludes that she wants "power" that she can use to topple everything to create a world without conflict, and for that she's going to use Mai and Bell to create her own Take-Mikazuchi. Bell also adds that, as humanity fears a power, over time they'll come to worship it and find a way to wield it.
  • Off with His Head!: In Spiral Shift she does this to Captain Hastur, Jin's commander at the time.
  • One-Winged Angel: Near the end, with the help of Terumi, she's transformed into a more powerful form that lets her perform darkness-based attacks such as Dead Spike. Said form also allows her to temper herself, along with Mai's body, into something like Take-Mikazuchi. If Terumi's words are to be believed, it relies on The Power of Hate.
  • Psycho Supporter: For the Imperator.
  • Sadist: Obviously enjoys inflicting pain.
  • The Sociopath: Has no compunctions and shows no remorse when killing people. The 10th anniversary website confirmed it was the former.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: She enjoys pain. When Terumi threatens to cut her into pieces she says that sounds fun.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Imperator. The later chapters show, however, that her true loyalty specifically lies to Lord Tenjo, the previous Imperator; she apparently never know that the one in the position has changed, to Izanami. She even says "Tenjo" as her last words.
  • The Unfettered: She will do anything and everything for the sake of the Imperator.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She apparently used to be a rather normal kid from a lower noble family who was friends with the young Lord Tenjo. Then she lost that when she's separated by her lord, and lost it further by the time Ikaruga Civil War starts.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: She calls Mai a “former human” since Mai has become a Grimoire and treats her like an object. Likewise she refers to Ragna as "Azure Grimoire" which angers him as well.
  • The Worf Effect: Meifang is able to defeat both Jin and Kagura, though it happens years before the games so they're not at their full power.
  • You Have Failed Me: After failing to capture Mai, Meifang tells her men to dispose of Fuzzy and use his data to activate units 17 and 18.

    Cypher Albar
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seifer_albar.png
”With this, a road has been made… A road which connects to the abyss, the Burning Red…”

A character introduced in the second half of Remix Heart. A professor at the Military Academy who teaches alchemy. He spent most of his time away from other people, being busy with his own researches. Later shows an interest in Mai due to her grimoire.

  • Ambition Is Evil: His mad pursuit of the Crimson Grimoire leads to him conducting dastardly experiments on various people and, later, attempting to sacrifice the entirety of the Academy on making said grimoire.
  • Alchemy Is Magic: Pretty much what his alchemy abilities boil down to. He can create a Blob Monster and control another monster with it, and he can also create barriers and transfigure things into weapons.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: He's ultimately killed by Hazama when he ambushes him and impales him from behind with Ouroboros.
  • Big Bad: Although his intentions aren't revealed until much later in the series.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Is the one who ultimately stops the rampaging Jin Kisaragi (when he was influenced by Yukianesa). Also saves Mai from falling down the building after a Blob Monster attacks her.
  • Breaking Speech: He tells Mai that she has been lying in front of her friends about her true nature the entire time, and that she's losing her true self as she becomes a complete "Remix Heart", but she counters this by saying that I Am What I Am.
  • Deadly Upgrade: He later manages to acquire the Burning Red and then demonstrates its tremendous magical power. But as the Grimoire is incomplete, it rejects him and then shocks him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Screams this at Mai when she's sympathizing with his past. He then proceeds to take the Remix Heart from her.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Is revealed to be the Big Bad.
  • Freudian Excuse: Somewhat: he was ridiculed in the past for trying to find/make the Crimson Grimoire, which was believed to be a myth. This just made him wanting the thing even more, to prove himself.
  • Just Between You and Me: When Mai becomes incapacitated because of the device Cypher put on her, he then blurts his true motives while nobody's around.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: He pretty much gets what he wanted... but the Grimoire was incomplete, it harms him, and later Hazama comes down and kills him easily.
  • Loners Are Freaks: He claimed that friends, companions and somesuch are nothing before the power of the Crimson Grimoire. Later on, after Mai is saved and she gets news on him missing, she goes to say that he wouldn't turn out so bad if he had friends to support him and scold him whenever he made mistakes.
  • Mad Scientist: Is hinted to be one. Turns out he really is one, what with his disregard of human life as he performed experiments on them for his goal.
  • Manipulative Bastard: First he created a monster to observe Mai, and as the monster threatened her, he then swoops in to save her, earning her trust. She then explains her situation to him, which leads to him putting a device on her that collects information about her. After he gets everything he needs, it shocks her to unconsciousness, and Cypher manipulated her friends to flood her with Ars Magus to reconfigure the Azure fragments within her, and indirectly turning her into a full "Remix Heart".
  • Nice Guy: Appears as amicable and collected, and is concerned with the well-being of the students. In reality, though, he's a cruel bastard who will stop at nothing to reach his goal.
  • Never Found the Body: After he's killed, his body is mentioned to have been disappeared from the place.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man : He wears a very stylish outfit, complete with a Badass Cape.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses : A genius alchemist who wears circular glasses.
  • Walking Spoiler: This dude is, shall we say, quite a big deal later.
