Noelle is a silver-haired royal from the prestigious House of Silva, as well as a member of the Black Bulls. Befitting her upbringing, she can come off as arrogant and cold at times as a defence mechanism due to her insecurities. However she grows to treat people equally and overcome her trauma to become a powerful Magic Knight. She eventually develops romantic feelings for Asta but is in denial about them.

As the youngest daughter of the late Acier Silva — and sister to Nozel, Nebra, and Solid Silva — Noelle has incredible magical potential, with Noelle using Water Magic. Unfortunately for her, she lacks fine control, resulting in collateral damage and being mocked by her own family. As a result, Noelle has veered towards defensive magic, mostly protective bubbles. Eventually she gains enough confidence to develop offensive magic and veer towards being a strong attack mage, thanks to her squad offering support and care.

Action Girl: Noelle develops into this over time as she improves her magic control, becoming an integral member of the main team with the offensive and defensive properties of her water magic. She fully evolves into one when she obtains her Valkyrie Armor, manifesting an armor to fight in close combat with a lance and spells.
Action Survivor: As a result of being unable to properly control her magic, she can't do anything to help Asta and Magna on their first mission until the motivation to save a little girl allows Noelle to manifest a defensive spell. From then on she acts as a defense mage until the Underwater Temple Arc, during which she manages to harness her magic offensively during the fight against Vetto.
Agony of the Feet: Suffers this when Asta accidentally steps on her toes during the Dungeon Exploration Arc. Wearing sandals made it worse.
Always Someone Better: By the time of the final arc, her siblings consider her to be this to them, consistently outstripping them in terms of combat ability and being the only one of them to match their Lucius-empowered mother.
Angelic Beauty: Noelle is the second most beautiful woman among the characters according to the Volume 12 Questions Brigade. Her looks have several men find her attractive, especially in a bikini. Kiato refers to her as "Sea Goddess" because of her beauty. Finral, meanwhile, calls her "royal babe".
Animal Motifs:
- Swans, with many of her dresses resembling feathers. Her Valkyrie Dress also features wing like head ornaments reflecting how she felt broke free of the cage of her family's abuse.
- A smaller one with bunnies, her pigtails resembling a pair of bunny ears and having owned a stuffed bunny as a child.
Apologetic Attacker: Says sorry to Fana when she accidentally destroys the upper half of her body using her Sea Dragon's Roar when they fight in the Shadow Palace. Fana easily regenerates from it using her Flame Recovery Magic, enhanced by the Forbidden Magic of the reincarnation.
The Baby of the Bunch: She is the youngest member of the Black Bulls, with Asta slightly older than her, and her squadmates all act as a loving, surrogate family for Noelle, in contrast to her older siblings who tormented her growing up.
Badass Adorable: She's a cute girl who's only 5'3", who happens to have powerful magic that she can use to unleash a sea dragon and fight with a water armor.
Balance, Speed, Strength Trio: Noelle is the Balance to Yuno's Speed and Asta's Strength with versatile water spells that can form powerful blasts or barriers.
Bare Midriffs Are Feminine:
- Not usually, but apparent when wearing a swimsuit in an attempt to impress Asta.
- Her Valkyrie Mermaid Dress plays it straighter, resembling Chainmail Bikini more than actual armour like her standard Valkyrie Dress.

Barrier Warrior: She becomes one in Chapter 7 with Sea Dragon's Lair. She manages to protect an entire group of villagers from a hail of jagged ice shards with it, allowing Asta to go on the offensive.
Bathing Beauty: She's seen bathing twice, in the hot springs after they train at the Yultim Volcano and in the Heart Kingdom with Mimosa and Lolopechka.
Battle Ballgown: Downplayed with her Valkyrie Armor. Its literal romanization from Japanese is "Valkyrie Dress", and the skirt and wing-like ornaments add to the armor's feminine aesthetic without making it a full-on armored dress.
The Beautiful Elite: Noelle is a royal from the House of Silva. She is rich, beautiful, elegant, has a fancy dress, and at the top of the social hierarchy.
Beautiful Tears: Kiato notes that Noelle looks beautiful even while crying.
Beauty Equals Goodness: She's considered attractive by many men, the second most beautiful female character, and becomes a selfless Magic Knight over the course of the story.
Because You Were Nice to Me: This is the reason why she stays with the Black Bulls: because they didn't look down upon her when they found out that she couldn't control her magic.
Beneath the Mask:
- This occasionally happens either when things are going well or she is praised for something. On the outside, she pretends to be haughty and aloof, while on the inside, she's shown to be very happy.
- Noelle tells off the Black Bulls for showing up late to help fight the elves at the Clover Castle, telling them that she held them off with a new spell. She then admits to herself that she was scared and is glad that they're here.
- Knows she can't win against Megicula and even admits to herself that she wants to just fall to her knees and cry, but still refuses to give up and asserts to the devil that that's the strength of humans.
Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Asta's Archie and Mimosa's Betty because she is a haughty and aloof girl. Incidentally, both of them are royalty instead of one or the other.
Big Brother Worship: Noelle greatly respects her older siblings, especially Nozel, and desires their approval due to their low opinion of her because of Noelle's bad magic control. She grows out of it after joining the Black Bulls, telling Solid that she's already been acknowledged by people better than him.
Big Damn Heroes:
- She pulls a big one in Chapter 176 when she steps in to join Nozel in fighting off Kivn and the elves to get Nebra some medical attention.
- Arrives with Gaja to help Charlotte and Rill against a 100% devil power Vanica and controlled Lolopechka.
- Shows up to protect all her siblings when their mother Acier attempts to kill them as a paladin.
Big Ego, Hidden Depths: Noelle is first seen to be arrogant and proud over being a royal, disparaging Asta and thinking herself to be too good for the Black Bulls. Soon after it's revealed that she has bad magic control, which led her to be mocked by her family and desperately desire their acknowledgement. Much of her Character Development has Noelle overcome her deep insecurity by honing her magic potential.
Black Mage: When Noelle learns Sea Dragon's Roar, Yami notes that she's an incredible attack mage even for her great latent abilities. Although she still uses her defensive spells, she makes the most of her magic when using it offensively.
Black Sheep: Appropriately enough, she is this to her family since she has trouble controlling her magic.
Blessed with Suck: Even for a royal, Noelle was born with an incredibly large amount of magic power. However, this is part of the reason for her lack of control of said magic, due to its vast power, which is worsened by her siblings mistreating her for her bad control. Thinking that Asta will mock her causes Noelle to accidentally let her magic rampage, trapping herself in a giant sphere of water that she has to be saved from.
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead:
- Of the girls who accompany Asta to the Heart Kingdom, Noelle is the Blonde to Nero's Brunette and Mimosa's Redhead.
- Lolopechka becomes the Brunette after they befriend her during the six month timeskip, with Nero usually in her bird form.
Blue Is Heroic: She envelops herself in a blue armor made of water, and is a Magic Knight who fights against threats to the Clover Kingdom.
Body Motifs: Her legs and feet, typically leaving them partially exposed with her skirt and sandles, and are given focus in the fourth and sixth ending credits. Her Character Development culminating in he standing tall.
Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Noelle poses in her Valkyrie Dress form, showing off her assets in chapter 297's colored page.
Born Winner: Her mana pool is enormous even for a royal. According to Tabata, her latent magic is about the same as her mother Acier, who even Mereoleona could never beat, and Julius, the Wizard King. She almost never has to worry about the same problems most of the commoners (who almost always have tiny reserves) in the Black Bulls have with using too much magic in one go. The only downside is most of her offensive spells like Sea Dragon's Roar take so much of it that it needs more than her squadmates could ever have at once (aside from maybe fellow nobles Finral and Henry due to his ability to stockpile whatever he absorbs), which drains even her magic in just a few uses. With training, she rectifies her magic usage to be able to cast more spells.
Borrowed Catchphrase: She yells out Asta's "I'm not done yet!" when she refuses to give up fighting against Vanica despite their power difference, showing how much Asta has influenced Noelle into becoming a Determinator like him.
Broken Bird: Her involvement in Acier's death and the horrendous abuse her older siblings put her through caused Noelle to become a depressed Upper-Class Twit. She gets better.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gender-Inverted. Noelle is the depressed Brooding Girl to Asta's optimistic Gentle Boy. His, along with the other Black Bulls', acknowledgement of her worth helps Noelle gain confidence in herself. Noelle becomes inspired by Asta's heroism, and falls in love with him for his kind, courageous nature.
Brother–Sister Team: With Nozel to defeat Megicula, with Nozel using his Mercury Magic to destroy the devil's flesh and Noelle destroying her heart, freeing their mother Acier's soul.
Caged Bird Metaphor: Compares herself to this when manifesting her Valkyrie Armor, which has a prominent Feather Motif, lets her fly through the air, and is based on the mythical Valkyries associated with swans, to save her siblings:
"The pain I felt earlier seems unreal now. It's as if I've been released from a cage. Oh, so magic is something this wild and free!!"
Cain and Abel: Downplayed. Noelle is the Abel to Solid's Cain, especially when they use their Water Magic against each other during the Royal Knights Selections Exam.
Catchphrase: "I'm royalty." Asta is annoyed for hearing her say it, even when anything has nothing to do with her status.
The Cavalry: She and the rest of the forces who were training in Elysia join up with the Magic Knights and Resistance in the Spade Kingdom to help them fight against the devils released from the underworld and the Dark Triad.
Chainmail Bikini: Justified. Her Valkyrie Armor — Mermaid Form is a bikini top and mermaid tail made of water that's meant for underwater combat.
Character Development:
- Noelle goes from being an Upper-Class Twit who thought her royalty status made her superior to others to a caring young woman who considers it her duty to protect the weak and helpless, even her older siblings. So much so that she comes to believe that royals should help others because they have the best magic in the kingdom.
- She begins as an insecure young woman due to her inability to control her magic, which made her mocked by her older siblings all her life. She becomes a much happier and more confident person after joining the Black Bulls, which helps her control her magic.
- Due to her bad magic control, Noelle starts off as somewhat cowardly, thinking of abandoning Asta and Magna to avoid being killed by Heath and his men, who are trying to massacre a village of peasants. A little girl's plead for Noelle to save them helps her gain the resolve to help her squadmates. And as she develops her magic she becomes much more courageous, to the point she staunchly refuses to give up fighting against Vanica despite their vast difference in power.
Character Exaggeration: Due to the slower pacing of the anime, it plays up her Tsundere characteristics a lot more compared to the manga.
Character Tics:
- She tends to flip her hair with her hand in moments of arrogance.
- She often turns her head in a Haughty "Hmph".
The Chosen One: Noelle is chosen by the Sea God - Leviathan. This is connected to a prophecy about Judegment day, the end of the world.
Clashing Cousins: Downplayed. Although they're usually friendly with each other, Noelle has this with her cousin Mimosa over their mutual crush Asta, with the two bothered by each other's displays of affection towards him.
Classical Anti-Hero: One of Noelle's most prominent character flaws is her lack of self-confidence derived from being deemed a failure by her family because of her bad magic control. Overcoming this is a big part of Noelle's character arc.
Cleavage Window: Her normal outfit shows a bit of cleavage at the top, A lot more in her Saint Valkyrie Dress.
Clingy Jealous Girl:
- Although she denies her feelings for Asta, she gets jealous when Mimosa starts developing romantic feelings for Asta herself.
- She follows Asta to the mixer, going as far as working as a waitress in the restaurant in order to watch him. She even follows him all the way to Nairn when he visits Rebecca. When Rebecca kisses Asta on the cheek as thanks for saving her siblings, Noelle's upset to say the least.
Clothing Damage:
- Getting attacked by Mars partially tears Noelle's dress and jacket, exposing part of her breasts. She gets really embarrassed when Asta points it out.
- Vanica's Curse-Warding Magic causes parts of her water armor to dissipate wherever the curse markings were afflicted.
Combat Stilettos: Her Valkyrie Armor gives her heeled chausses as well as a boost in magical power and speed.
Cool Crown: Noelle gains a crown in her Saint Valkyrie form with a halo, and another in her Dragon form with horns.
Cool Sword: In Saint Valkyrie she can form a sea-green sword made of water that has a hilt with the cross of Silva embedded.
Covert Pervert: Despite her air of superiority, she has these moments regarding Asta. Notably, when Mereoleona tells them she's dragging them to a hot spring, she imagines Asta asking her to wash his back. She promptly slaps Asta.
Crown of Power: She gains a tiara made of water when using her Valkyrie Armor, fitting her royal status. In Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor the tiara becomes a small crown with a halo.
Curb-Stomp Battle:
- Most of her fights tend to be one-sided in her favor with the exception of Vetto, who still took far more damage than he had from any single character from only one attack. The only one who was more effective in one hit against him was Yami.
- In the first round of the tournament, she destroys Solid in one move with Sea Dragon's Roar. While holding herself back.
Curb Stomp Cushion: Her fight against Vanica. Even with the help of Lolopechka and Nero, Vanica still defeats them fairly easily when she fully expends Megicula's power. Noelle is able to stab Vanica twice with her lance and avoid her deadly attacks, impressing Vanica enough to capture Lolopechka to the Spade Kingdom to motivate Noelle to become stronger and have a good fight with her.
Cuteness Proximity: She finds Nero adorable and is fully willing to take care of her despite the fact that she hates anyone with high magical power (namely her). Noelle even thinks Nero's human form is cute.
Dance Battler: Using her Valkyrie Armor gives Noelle perfect grasp of the mana surrounding her armor, letting her move through mana currents like a graceful dance to dodge enemy attacks.
Dark Horse Sibling: Growing up, Noelle was ridiculed by her older siblings for her bad magic control. After gradually honing her magic, she defeats her brother Solid in the Royal Knights Selection Exam to his disbelief. And when they're endangered by an elf, she learns a new spell to save them.
Dark Is Not Evil: Downplayed given the only 'dark' about her is her Black Bulls uniform, and she is one of the nicest members after Character Development sets in.
- Played straighter in the final arc with her Valkyrie Dress: Dragon Armour, which has a darker coloration, horns, draconic wings, and overall a more menacing design than her usual angelic ones.
Dark Secret: Megicula cursing Acier to death before Noelle was born was kept a closely guarded secret by Nozel to prevent the curse from spreading; he never told his siblings the truth about what happened to Acier. Noelle doesn't find out about this until Nozel tells her to ask Dorothy in her Glamour World.
Death Glare: Noelle is already distressed when Vanica states that she'll take Lolopechka to the Spade Kingdom. But when she recalls when she fought her mother Acier, who became much stronger when she took a child hostage, Noelle furiously glares at her.
Death or Glory Attack: Her Sea Dragon's Roar spell. It's powerful enough to rip off Vetto's arm, but uses up all her mana and leaves Noelle helpless afterwards. When attacking Salamander, she bets it all on the spell, which does defeat it. No longer the case after Noelle improves her mana use, letting her cast it without exhausting her magic power.
Declaration of Protection: When a little girl at Saussy asks her to save them from Heath and his mages, she gains the resolve to first manifest her spell Sea Dragon's Lair to protect them, proclaiming that she's a royal and Black Bull who will protect the people of the country.
Defrosting Ice Queen: She is introduced as an extremely proud royal who is unwilling to do anything anyone else says, as she doesn't want to appear weak in front of others. Asta and the gang's willingness to help her gain control of her powers and accept her for who she really is to warm up to them, but she still maintains her haughtiness around others.
Demon Slaying: Saint Valkyrie gives her this power, turning her into a Saint Stage thanks to Undine's power to purify malice and destroy devils.
Despair Event Horizon: She comes dangerously close to it after Asta is seemingly killed by Lucius, looking like she's practically lost the will to live. It shows how bleak the situation is — Not only her love interest is seemingly gone for good, the magic knights are potentially dealing with an enemy capable of threatening all of humanity. Just compare this to the moment after Lolopechka is caught or tampered by Vanica or Megicula.
Determinator: Flashbacks show that Noelle would keep on practicing her magic control all the time despite constant failures, never giving up. Her cousin Mimosa admires her for this because nobles look down on hard work, seeing it as something those who aren't born into power do. It pays off when she manifests her Valkyrie Armor to save her siblings, with it explicitly stated that she could do so because she trained hard to hone her enormous amount of magic. She tells Megicula this is the special strength of humans when she questions as to why humans, unlike devils, don't give up and cling to hope.
Deuteragonist: Noelle fits the bill better than the other deuteragonist, Yuno. She's the character with the most screentime outside of Asta, gets loads of character development, and receives consistent power-ups that put her on the level of her peers. She remains a constant element of the story the second she shows up.
Discard and Draw: She eventually gives Undine back to Lolopechka after the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc and loses the ability to go Saint Stage despite getting stronger following the two-year timeskip. In the final battle against Lucius and his Paladins including Acier threatening her family, Noelle reveals she gets a new spirit in form of the Sea God Leviathan which is the one Kahono and Kiato worships. As a result, she can use Valkyrie Armor: Dragon Form which Acier gives her praise for growing even stronger!
Dislikes the New Guy: Despite being a new member at the time of her introduction, Noelle disapproves of Asta joining the Black Bulls, given that he has no magic. However, she eventually reconsiders her opinion of Asta once he and the other Black Bulls help her accept who she really is.
Dragon Knight: Her Valkyrie Armor: Dragon Form through uniting with Leviathan, the dragon worshipped as the sea god in the Underwater Temple, giving her draconic fins, horns, and wings as well as scaled armor complete with a lance.
Dreadful Musician: According to the Volume 14 Questions Brigade, Noelle is the worst singer among the characters.
Dub Name Change: In Japanese, her spell is literally romanized as "Valkyrie Dress". In the official English translation, it is "Valkyrie Armor", which fits with the meaning of the kanji.
Dude Magnet: Sekke, Finral, and some bystanders in Kikka all find her attractive, and Kiato ends up having a crush on her.

Elemental Armor: Noelle's Valkyrie Armor spell compresses her mana to form a water armor that lets her control the mana around her to move through the air. She later gains a Valkyrie Armor – Mermaid Form that increases her power underwater and a stronger Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor through the power of the water spirit Undine. After losing Undine along with Saint Stage, she eventually gains a Valkyrie Armor - Dragon Form through the power of the worshipped Sea God... the sea dragon Leviathan!
Elemental Barrier:
- Her spell Sea Dragon's Lair forms a large spherical water barrier with whirlpools that can block piercing attacks.
- Motivated to help the Black Bulls, she learns the spell Sea Dragon's Cradle, which forms a large water sphere, to transport them to the Underwater Temple.
Elemental Hair Composition: The ends of Noelle's pigtails turn into water while she's in her Saint Valkyrie Armor.
Elemental Motifs: Water, as befitting a Water Mage. Like the ocean, her mood is subject to great change, and can be quite different than what others think beneath the surface. Fittingly, she is also the main character who undergoes the most Character Development, going from a haughty royal with an Inferiority Superiority Complex who can barely defend herself in a fight, to a benevolent and determined young woman willing to stand up to enemies who grossly outclass her in the name of defending her friends.
Elemental Rivalry:
- With her cousin Mimosa for Asta's affection. Noelle favors attacking with Water Magic while Mimosa mostly uses Plant Recovery Magic.
- Vanica becomes Noelle's Arch-Enemy by way of her role in her mother's death and abducting Lolopechka, and she uses Blood Magic which her Water Magic has an advantage against.
Elemental Weapon:
- She forms a lance out of water when using Valkyrie Armor and in Dragon Form.
- In Saint Valkyrie Armor, Noelle can use a longsword made of water with the symbol of the House of Silva embedded on the hilt.
Embodiment of Virtue: Of the three main characters, Noelle embodies "love" of the three values represented by the clover of the kingdom. Raised in a loveless environment in which she couldn't control her vast magical power, having a loving surrogate family in the Black Bulls allows her to hone her magic. When learning that Undine's maternal love for Lolopechka led her to not disclose the secret of Saint Stage to her, Noelle, while acknowledging that Undine was wrong, tells her that her love for Lolopechka itself is not a weakness. Asta coming to help her leads Noelle to internally admit that she is in love with him, regaining her mental strength and entering a final Saint Stage to defeat Megicula.
Ensign Newbie: Played with. At the beginning of the story, Asta and Noelle are the newest recruits of the Black Bulls. They soon becomes two of the squad's strongest members and two of its technical highest-ranked officers, only under Charmy, Nacht, and Yami, but that's because they kept taking missions that got them recognized along with actually being committed to advancing unlike their older peers. Plus, nobody in the Black Bulls actually cares about rank outside of "do what Yami says or die" and treats each other as effective equals.
The Exile: Noelle accompanies Asta and the rest of the Black Bulls as they go into a self-imposed exile in an effort to investigate the devils.
Exotic Eye Designs: In Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor a circle surrounds her pupils.
Expository Hairstyle Change: After the six month time skip, Noelle has thin sidebangs that frame her face and ties her pigtails with purple ribbons.
Fairytale Motifs: Subtle, but of The Ugly Duckling. She wears a feathered blazer and is disowned by the House of Silva, which is associated with eagles, for her bad magic control, which she only improves on thanks to the kindness of the Black Bulls, a group of fellow outcasts, who help her gain confidence in herself. Her Valkyrie Armor, which she first manifests in a moment that highlights her growth as a mage up to that point in the story, has a feather motif, and mythical valkyries are associated with swans and often called "swan maidens".
Fallen Princess: In the beginning of the story, she's a royal who's essentially been exiled from the House of Silva because of her bad magic control and rejected from her family's squad, the Silver Eagles. She only joins the Black Bulls, the worst of the squads, thanks to Yami.
Family of Choice: Noelle is far more sisterly with Vanessa and Magna than anyone in the House of Silva and it is implied her magic control issues were made worse by her real siblings' abuse.
Fanservice Costumes: Noelle has been shown in a bikini, lingerie, and maid outfit. Also revealing power-ups such as Mermaid or Saint Valkyrie forms.
Fanservice Pack: Noelle has grown more attractive after each time skip, alongside her bust size increasing. This correlates with the art style evolving.
Feather Motif: Noelle's white blazer ends in frills resembling feathers, like the clothing worn by her siblings, and on the cover of Volume 19 she's surrounded by feathers and a wing. She gradually frees herself from her family's abuse in the past and gains more confidence. When she obtains her Valkyrie Armor, which features featherlike ear ornaments, Noelle states that she feels like she's been freed from her cage.
Fighter, Mage, Thief: In their strategy against Vanica, Noelle, the one actually battling Vanica with her lance and attack spells, is the Fighter; Lolopechka, increasing the power of Noelle's Water Magic with her Ludic Sanctuary, is the Mage; Nero, inconspicuous as a bird to fly in and seal Vanica after she uses all of Megicula's devil power, is the Thief. Their strategy falls apart with Megicula's Curse-Warding Magic weakening rune arrays, breaking out of Nero's prison and destroying Lolopechka's Ludic Sanctuary.
Fire-Forged Friends: Along with the other Black Bulls, Noelle becomes much closer with her squadmates through facing dangers together such as saving Saussy and fighting members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun.
Fire/Water Juxtaposition: The Water to the elf Fana's Fire, with the two fighting twice. When they first fight, Noelle had learned to control her Water Magic enough to not let it rampage. Fana, on the other hand, unleashes massive, destructive flames out of her great anger. Noelle has a kind, sweeter side underneath her coldness, but Fana's quietness hides a deep-seated rage. When they fight again when Fana is reincarnated a second time, Noelle has become more of an attack mage, forming her Valkyrie Armor, while Fana has lost the power of the Fire Spirit Salamander but become a greater recovery mage, easily regenerating the upper half of her body.
Foil:
- To her squadmate Asta. Asta is a poor orphan, has zero magic, wears casual clothing, and despite his situation remains absolutely determined to become the Wizard King, rarely backing down from any obstacle put in his way. By contrast, Noelle was born into royalty, suffers from too much magic, dresses elegantly, and (initially) has serious self esteem issues. Asta starts out as a Close-Range Combatant who overwhelms his opponents with his physical might and Anti-Magic, and retains the same basic approach even as he gains ranged options, while Noelle starts developing as a Long-Range Fighter, she eventually shifts to a balance of it and Magic Knight as the series continues. Both even get a Next Tier Power-Up in the form of a Fusion Dance, Asta gaining a more demonic appearance while Noelle's evokes the image of an angel. Finally, while they both have silver coloured hair, Asta's is short and spiky while Noelle's is long and held in pigtails.
- To Yuno. Both have immense magic power, have an outwardly frosty yet ultimately friendly relationship with Asta, and wield a classical elemental magic eventually gaining a Super Mode from the corresponding Spirit Drive. However Yuno was raised in an Orphanage of Love, has always had excellent control over his magic (making him popular amongst his Family of Choice) and has a profound sense of friendship and respect for his Childhood Friend that he doesn't hesitate to express. By contrast, Noelle was raised by her abusive family, constantly bullied her for struggling to control her immense magic power, and quickly develops romantic feelings for Asta that she refuses to acknowledge, even to herself. In another contrast, Noelle was all but disowned by her family when assigned to the Black Bulls while Yuno learns the Spade Kingdom has long been awaiting the return of him as their prince.
- To Mimosa, her rival for Asta's love. Noelle has been mocked all her life for her uncontrollable magic but grows to become an attack mage, while Mimosa is praised for her Recovery Magic. In battle, Noelle forms an offensive water armor while Mimosa uses a healing flower robe. While Noelle is a Tsundere to Asta who denies her feelings for him, Mimosa is openly affectionate towards Asta. Noelle also often brings up her status as royalty. In contrast, Mimosa is much more modest about it.
- To Fana (more specifically the Elf). Both are powerful female mages whose magics manifest as dragons. Noelle uses Water Magic while Fana uses Flame Magic. Noelle's cold demeanor hides a hidden sweeter side, but underneath Fana's emotionlessness is a psychotic rage. When they fight again after Fana is reincarnated a second time, Noelle has developed her magic to become more of an attack mage, forming her water armor, while Fana has lost the power of Salamander and become an even greater recovery mage, regenerating the entire upper half of her body.
- Also to Leopold. Both are the youngest of their siblings and try to surpass them. Noelle uses Water Magic and Leopold uses Flame Magic. Leopold has a good relationship with his siblings, while Noelle is mocked by hers for her bad magic control. Noelle keeps many of her emotions to herself. Leopold, on the other hand, is much more emotional and hot-blooded.
- With Nero. Noelle wears a white feathered jacket while Nero is in a black feathered dress. Noelle is a powerful attack mage; Nero's magic has little combat use so she serves more as a support mage. Noelle's bad magic control left her with only the option of joining the Black Bulls in spite of being a royal. Nero was born a noblewoman, but became a royal servant because of her seemingly useless sealing magic. Noelle's family's sigil is eagles and Nero on the other hand is associated with the swallow. Nero's use of forbidden magic permanently affected her sealing magic and gave her wegs, which are considered cursed and lead her to be accused as devil-possessed. In contrast, Noelle is associated with holiness upon becoming a Saint Stage complete with a Holy Halo, gaining the power to purify devils and destroy malice.
- To Lolopechka. Both are female royals, water mages, have been tragically affected by Vanica and Megicula, have difficulty using their vast magic to attack (Noelle was unable to offensively manifest her vast mana due to her own pacifism while Lolopechka was unable to learn attack spells due to her kind heart), and insecure about their statuses (Noelle unconfident about her place in the House of Silva and Lolopechka having doubts about being a good enough queen). Unlike Lolopechka, who was raised in a loving environment by Undine, Noelle grew up in an unloving household until she joined the Black Bulls. However, Undine's maternal coddling of Lolopechka prevented her from becoming a fighter, while Noelle's love for the Black Bulls let her become a warrior to protect those she loves. Thanks to undergoing hardship, Noelle becomes the mage Lolopechka couldn't become – one whose love lets her fight enemies to save those she cares for.

Going Commando: Noelle doesn't wear panties in the manga, there are upskirt panels that imply this.Her Saint Valkyrie form outright shows this with many shots of her backside without panties.
Good Is Not Soft: Noelle grows to become a kinder young woman who considers it her duty as a Magic Knight to protect the weak. Despite this, she is still willing to use lethal force as seen during her fight with Vanica, stabbing her twice with her water lance. The Black Bulls' kindness and support for Noelle, especially Asta's, help her learn to control her magic as well as become a more confident, kinder person who no longer cares about social status. This leads Noelle to defeat her older brother Solid, who tormented her during her childhood, at the Royal Knights Examination, telling him she's already been acknowledged by greater people and no longer weak. I Just Want to Be Badass: A major part of Noelle's character. Due to being mocked all her life by her family for her poor magic control and relegated to joining the worst of the Magic Knight squads, Noelle greatly desires to hone her magic and make her siblings acknowledge her. With hard training and a supportive group in the Black Bulls, she gradually becomes more resolute and gains control over her magic, first learning barrier spells and eventually attack spells. By the time she has become a powerful attack mage, Noelle tells her brother Solid that she has already been acknowledged by people better than him in the Black Bulls.
I Just Want to Be Loved:
- Noelle desperately wants to be loved by her biological family, who mocked her for her Power Incontinence as well as her indirect involvement in their mother's death. She does find love and acceptance in the Black Bulls instead, which helps her become happier and confident. Ironic Name: "Noelle" is a name distantly derived from the Latin word "natalis", which means birthday. She was mocked by her older siblings for indirectly causing her mother Acier's Death by Childbirth as well as her Power Incontinence.
Irony: Although she was mocked by her family for being an Inept Mage despite being born to Acier Silva, a legendary mage renowned for the grace and dignity of her magic, Noelle ends up saving her siblings from the elf Kivn using a new spell that clads her in a water armor highly similar to her mother’s steel armor, with Nozel reminded of their late mother when he sees her fight the elf. Combined with their physical resemblance and shared compassion for others, Noelle ended up becoming the child most like her mother despite being mocked by her siblings for causing her death in childbirth.
It's Personal: Although the other Black Bulls wish to defeat the devils of the Spade Kingdom to clear Asta's name, Noelle has her personal motives to defeat Vanica who, with Megicula, fatally cursed her mother Acier, and Lolopechka, who she befriends after six months, to die. It becomes even more personal when Vanica takes Lolopechka hostage in hopes that Noelle becomes stronger.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's often a jerk to her fellow teammates, such as Asta, but she still loves and respects them as friends, as well as her siblings. Despite her flaws, she can also be really nice to others as well.
Jousting Lance: Using her Valkyrie Armor gives her one made of spiraling water. Because of its drilling properties, she uses it to override Kivn's Compass Magic and defeat her.
Just Friends: Through character development she becomes more comfortable with her affection for Asta. Instead of trying to convince herself that she doesn't care about him at all, she has elevated to a justification of professional/friendly concern. She only likes him as far as being his squadmate, which is definitely not a romantic crush. After Asta comes to help her against Megicula and entrusts the battle to her, Noelle finally realizes that she's in love with him.
Karmic Jackpot: After being mocked by her older siblings for much of her lifetime, Noelle's act of rescuing them from Kivn's attack causes them to reconcile with her.
Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Her normal outfit is a long, frilled white jacket and a purple dress, and she grows from being unable to control her magic into a Lady of War.
Kid Hero: She's a main character and one of the youngest members of her squad due to recently receiving a grimoire at the age of 15 in the beginning of the story. And as a Magic Knight, she has the duty of protecting the Clover Kingdom.

Noelle is the spitting image of her mother and strives to become a powerful Magic Knight like her, as well as avenge her death against Vanica and Megicula. Her father, on the other hand, is never mentioned nor seen aside from a very brief flashback which doesn't even show his face.
The Load: Noelle is a royal with great magical power but suffers from poor magic control that causes her magic to veer in the wrong direction. She even notes to herself that she's holding back Asta and Magna when they fight against Heath and his minions and thinks about running away. But when a little girl asks for her to save them, she gains the heightened emotion that triggers her to learn a proper spell, creating a protective dome of water that lets Asta go on the offensive. By gaining battle experience and training throughout the story, she steadily becomes a powerful mage.
Long Hair Is Feminine: She's a sophisticated royal and has long silver hair which reaches past her shoulders even when tied as pigtails.
Love Is a Weakness: Defied. Thanks to developing as a fighter throughout the story thanks to her own kindness and love from others, she doesn't believe this and tells Undine so:
"Not telling her about the Saint Stage, that might have been a mistake. But you did it out of kindness, didn't you? Being kind. Feeling affection for someone. How could those things ever be mistakes?!!"

Magic Knight: Noelle is this when using her Valkyrie Armor spell. She creates an armor and lance made of water, which she can use as a magical weapon and to manifest spells herself.
Magic Skirt: Her standard attire features a very short dress which somehow never reveals anything, even in her most active moments.
Magic Wand: She wields a slender brown rod as a wand to help control her magic.
Making a Splash: She has Water Magic and tries to use it effectively if it weren't for her inability to aim properly. Often crosses with Kill It with Water, thanks to the vast quantities she is able to produce. Over time, she gains control of her magic and learns to form barriers and blasts of water.
Male Gaze: There are several panels with camera angles that emphasise Noelle's upskirt and breasts, as intended fanservice to appease the audience. Especially in Saint Valkyrie and Dragon forms.
Male Might, Female Finesse: Zigzagged, but ultimately played straight between her and Asta as the series goes along. Noelle develops from spamming big water magic attacks to a graceful Lady of War with her Valkyrie Armour, while Asta develops as a swordsman but primarily uses his raw physical power and Anti-Magic swords to overwhelm foes.
The Many Deaths of You: In the Forest of Witches Arc, Asta kills Noelle twice first by decapitating her and then running her through with his sword. Well, except that the deaths were actually from the Witch Queen's perspective, since Vanessa uses the Red Thread of Fate magic to rescue Noelle and ultimately foil the queen's plans.
Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: She's subjected to harsh treatment by her surviving family due to Acier's death, with Nozel even lamenting that Noelle didn't die in place of their mother. The fact that Noelle was born and grew up unable to properly control her own magic, no doubt intensified this lingering resentment and belief already held by her family. Several years later, however, Dorothy tells her that Acier was actually cursed to death by Megicula.
Meaningful Appearance: She wears the standard white uniform used by the Silva family. It represents her status as royalty with powerful magic who becomes one of the main characters. And unlike the majority of her guild who wear closed-toe boots, she wears a rather fancy pair of high-heeled sandals, as per the tradition of the Silva House. The elegant, revealing, and fanciful nature of her footwear, as opposed to the ruggedness of the others', helps set her apart as a member of royalty. However, they aren't very protective from Asta stepping on her foot in a dungeon in the dark.
Meaningful Name:
- Her name Noelle, refers to White Christmas (snow), and fits with "da Silva" (silver). Besides that, snow is just frozen water, and she has water powers.
- The name Noelle derives from the gender-neutral name "Noel", which, because of the aforementioned Christmas association, is used for Santa Claus aka Saint Nicholas, who is based on the historical Greek saint. She later gains the power of Saint Stage after becoming the host of Undine to purify malice and destroy devils.
Minidress of Power: Her dress is very short and rises well above her knee, also applies to her Valkyrie forms. She still grows into becoming a powerful mage throughout the story.

Although Noelle cares for her comrades and defends the weak, Vanica doesn't care at all about her loyal Dark Disciples and is only interested in fighting strong foes.

Her Mermaid form, Saint Valkyrie form, and Dragon Form are revealing with a lot of cleavage and no clothes underneath.

- From forming a contract with Undine, she gains the power of the water spirit, letting her enter Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor, becoming a Saint Stage who can destroy even supreme devils.

No Range Like Point-Blank Range: Noelle unleashes her normally ranged Sea Dragon's Roar at point-blank against Vanica. Despite this, she No Sells it with her Red Beast.
Not Afraid of You Anymore: When Solid tries to mock her again during the match between Team O and Team P in the Royal Knights Arc, she flat-out stands up for herself and defeats him with her magic, saying she's not weak anymore.
Only Sane Woman: Especially early on, she usually acts this way over the antics of the Black Bulls, sometimes even sharing this role with Asta.
Our Mermaids Are Different: After training during the time skip Noelle learns the spell Valkyrie Armor — Mermaid Form, giving her a mermaid tail and armor bra, which is used for fighting underwater.
Out of Focus:
- In the Eye of the Midnight Sun Encounter Arc, as she is left behind in order to watch the town in case anything happens while Asta, Gauche and Theresa save the children. This is notably the only arc where she is separated from Asta until the Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc.
- Gradually, after the Royal Knights Arc her screentime gets lessened due to being more separated from Asta in their arc's plotlines and one of her main storylines (her family issues) getting closure.
Outside-the-Box Tactic: When Noelle and her siblings are trapped in Kivn's Another Atlas, disrupting their magic control in an enclosed space, she decides to let her Water Magic rampage, flooding the room and forcing Kivn to release it to avoid drowning. Although Nozel notes it's a tactic unbefitting of royalty, he acknowledges her strength and finally reconciles with her.
Personality Powers: She uses Water Magic and is usually calm but can be easily provoked like her element.
- The manifestation of her Valkyrie Dress occurs from her determination to protect her sinlings, while also giving her the ability to fly, reflecting how she's completely shed the negative image of herself their abuse instilled in her.
Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Noelle wears a light purple dress and has pink eyes. Asta, before the time skip, dons a dark blue jacket and pants.
Pink Means Feminine: Has pink eyes and prominent purple in her clothes. Being a royal, she also fits the traditional image of feminity.
Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Noelle may be 161 cm (5'3"), but she's a competent royal who can kick major ass when she needs to.
Plucky Girl: Noelle refuses to give up in tough situations, convincing Nozel that the elf-possessed humans do not have to be killed and will be saved by them. She passionately asks Patry to help her and the other Magic Knights in the Heart Kingdom get stronger after their loss to the Spade Kingdom. When he asks Noelle what makes her think they can become strong enough in little time when they had trained for six months and still lost, she tells him that giving up is even harder than getting stronger. He's impressed by her resolve and offers to teach the elves' esoteric art Ultimate Magic.
Powered Armor:
- When defending her family from elves, Noelle gains a spell called Valkyrie Armor, compressing her mana into an armor and lance made of water. Using it, she can control the mana around her, letting her fly through the air.
- Her variant Valkyrie Armor — Mermaid Form increases her power and speed underwater.
Power Gives You Wings:
- Noelle's Valkyrie Armor form has her gain a boost to her magical power and speed, with wing-like ornaments that jut out from her lower back and help her fly through the air.
- Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor gives her two feathered wings, and with the power of the water spirit Undine she reaches Saint Stage, letting her purify malice and destroy supreme devils.
- Valkyrie Armor - Dragon Form gives her dragon wings and has the power of Leviathan, the very powerful water dragon worshipped as the Sea God.
Power Incontinence: Being royalty, she has immense magical power. However, she has difficulty controlling it, causing her attacks to miss and accidentally trapping herself in a giant sphere of water. Her lack of magic control caused her to be ridiculed and called a defect by her own family and led to Noelle developing an inferiority complex. Throughout the story, she gains better control and learns to restrain her power at will.
The Power of Friendship: Not only is friendship the catalyst for Noelle's Character Development, but her friendship with Kahono moves her to finally become an attack mage, capable of the devastating spell Sea Dragon's Roar, that is capable of rivaling the Flame Spirit Salamander.
Princess Protagonist: Noelle is the main girl and tritagonist of the series. She is also royalty from elite house of Silva and is basically a princess in the kingdom.
The Proud Elite: What she grows to be. Despite the air of coldness and superiority about her royal status, she becomes much nicer and compassionate, especially around the Black Bulls.
Purple Is Powerful: She wears a purple short dress, earrings, and hair ribbons after the time skip, and even for a royal, she's blessed with an immense amount of magical power.
"The Reason You Suck" Speech: Noelle gives an indirect one at the Star Festival to the nobles who were dismissing a lost, crying peasant girl:
"Getting a swollen head, thinking you're better than the rest and looking down on others is something only those with shallow hearts do."
Red Baron: She's known as the "Sea Goddess" by the residents of the Underwater Temple, who saw when she first used her powerful Sea Dragon's Roar against Vetto.
Relative Button:
- Kivn threatening the lives of her older siblings, in spite of their mistreatment of her in the past, gives Noelle the motivation to learn her spell Valkyrie Armor to save them.
- Noelle is already distraught when Vanica takes Lolopechka captive to make Noelle stronger. But when Vanica brings up how fun it was to fight her mother Acier, who got stronger after she took a child hostage, Noelle is downright enraged.
Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She's quite modest. She becomes embarrassed when she finds out she suffered Clothing damage from the fight with Mars. And when she buys a bikini to try to catch Asta's attention, she's embarrassed while wearing it. She's also embarrassed when naked next to other women at a hot spring.
Revenge: Noelle gets revenge for her mother in her rematch against Vanica & Megicula. Finally putting her mother's soul to rest.
The Rich Have White Stuff: Noelle is a daughter of the House of Silva, one of the royal families of the Clover Kingdom, and she has silver hair and wears mostly white clothing.
Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Noelle grew up as royalty in the Silva family. As a result, she openly admits that she's never done cleaning or laundry. An early Running Gag had her pay ridiculous amounts of money for simple tasks, giving someone a small bag's worth of gold coins just for transporting her to a nearby town.
The Rival: She becomes this to her cousin Mimosa for Asta's affection.
Rotating Protagonist: The main trio (Asta, Yuno, and Noelle) are spread out throughout the continent and facing a different member of the Dark Triad shortly after Asta separates from Noelle following their completion of a mission against the Spade Kingdom. Noelle, with Lolopechka and Nero, fights Vanica, who's targeting Lolopechka, when she invades the Heart Kingdom.
Rousing Speech: After most of her teammates have reincarnated to elves and has threatened the Clover Kingdom, prompting Nozel to kill them in order to save the kingdom. She's the one who gives the counterargument to save them backed up with solid evidence such as Luck not killing her group despite being able to and Yuno still retaining his consciousness despite being one of the elves.
Royal Blood: She comes from a royal bloodline of mages who are part of the Silver Eagles.
Royal Brat: She qualifies when she first joins the Black Bulls and is even called a spoiled brat by Magna. Her royalty status causes her to think that she's too good for the squad, in spite of being accepted by Yami when Nozel rejected her from the Silver Eagles. After she learns that they're acceptive of her Power Incontinence and willing to help her, Noelle begins to grow out of this, remaining quite proud but becoming much kinder.
Royals Who Actually Do Something: Her initial character development is a transition from "I'm royalty so I don't have to help others" to "because I am royalty, I have to help others."
Runic Magic: After training in the Heart Kingdom, she learns to use spell arrays, letting Noelle use True Water Magic.

Say My Name: She yells Asta's name after he receives a massive shard of crystal to the gut, incapacitating him.
The Scapegoat: Nozel had a very good reason to blame Acier's death on Noelle: he wanted to prevent Megicula's curse from spreading to the rest of the family since it caused Acier's death in the first place.
Sexy Backless Outfit: Her dress leaves her back bare without her Black Bulls robe to cover it.
Shared Family Quirks: Her family members share her preference for using water attacks, save for the oldest brother, who uses liquid mercury. Apparently, they all get it from their dad — their legendary mother used steel magic.
- Played for Laughs when it turns out Solid is just as bad as expressing affection as she is, having an internal Freak Out after defeating Megicula and lifting the curse over how he should do so. Bonus points for being just like Noelle's own reaction to [[acknowledging her feelings for Asta]].
Ship Tease: With Asta. Due to her Tsundere disposition, this invokes many Clingy Jealous Girl moments out of her.
Shut Up, Hannibal!: Tells Vanica to shut up about enjoying their rematch after controlling Lolopechka:
"Just shut your mouth!! Someone like you who does whatever she wants and laughs like an idiot while kind people get hurt and cry. It's just intolerable!!!"
Sigil Spam: The symbol of the House of Silva is a cross fleury which is the shape of her earrings and the symbol on her jacket's pins. It even appears on her water armors.
Silk Hiding Steel: Noelle is an prim female royal who dresses the part in a white frilled jacket and purple dress. Despite this, she develops into a powerful attack mage, making use of her incredible magic power to unleash powerful spells.
Single Tear: Sheds one along with Nozel after their freed mother's soul hugs them after they defeat Megicula, complimenting them on having grown strong.
Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She falls for Asta because of his kindness, accepting and praising her despite her lack of magic control, and strong sense of justice, standing up for her against her siblings when they mock her and saving innocent people regardless of their status. However, she's in constant denial over her feelings and he's too oblivious to notice them.
Sphere of Power: Once Noelle has control over her incredible magical power, she can use the spell Sea Dragon's Waterball to form spheres of water that she launches as powerful blasts.
Stalker with a Crush: Although she denies it to herself, she follows Asta to his blind date because she has a crush on him, even disguising as a waitress to observe.
Steven Ulysses Perhero: Two guesses to what her hair color is. The first doesn't count.
Stone Wall: Thanks to her lack of magic control in the beginning of the story, for some time she can only use her magic to form Sea Dragon's Lair, a protective dome with whirlpools to block piercing attacks. She develops out of this when fighting Vetto.
Stripperific: Noelle's new valkyrie forms are impractical as armour, involving plenty of fanservice such as Noelle's Saint Valkyrie form and especially her Dragon form featuring a cleavage window that covers little, bare midriff, miniskirt, heels, without any form of underwear.
Strong Family Resemblance: According to Mereoleona, Noelle's the spitting image of her mother Acier. This is one of the reasons why Nozel didn't want to lose sight of her ever again.
Successful Sibling Syndrome: Noelle's insecurity regarding her poor magic control is tied to her being a member of the royal Silva family, with her siblings all high-ranking members of the Silver Eagles and her eldest brother Nozel being the captain of the squad. As a result, they mocked Noelle her entire life for being an incompetent royal. That said, she develops her magic, defeating her brother Solid in the Royal Knights Exam and is later acknowledged by her siblings as having become strong.
Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Fitting her Tsundere disposition. She usually acts aloof and haughty, but will show a softer, kinder side to those close to her, especially the Black Bulls and Asta.
Summon Magic: After being chosen by the water spirit Undine after Lolopechka gets captured, Noelle can summon her using Spirit Magic.
Superior Successor: Mereoleona believes that because Noelle, whose magic starts out as clumsy and crude, has to work very hard to become stronger, she will eventually surpass her mother Acier, who was known for her dignified and sophisticated magic use. This is high praise considering that Mereoleona, who is famed for being the strongest Magic Knight in the kingdom, never won against Acier herself.
Super-Reflexes: In her Valkyrie Armor, she's good enough to barely dodge Megicula and Vanica's many sharp projectiles simultaneously to avoid lethal wounds, to their great surprise.
Surrounded by Idiots: She often feels this way around the Black Bulls in the early chapters because of her royal upbringing. However, she proves many times to be Not So Above It All with her tsundere qualities.
Sweet Tooth: Noelle's volume profile states that one of her favorite things is sweets.
Sword and Sorcerer:
- Acts as the sword to her cousin Mimosa's sorcerer. Noelle's Valkyrie Dress makes her a Magic Knight capable of fighting foes in melee while Mimosa supports her allies through healing spells and her Magic Cannon Flower for ranged attacks.
- While they fight together less often, she also forms this with Asta. Asta typically fights in melee range with his Anti-Magic swords while Noelle would protect allies/civilians with Sea Dragons Nest, or prepare to fire Sea Dragon Roar.
Team Prima Donna: Noelle starts off as this, being a haughty royal who thinks the Black Bulls are beneath her. But over time, she becomes less haughty and befriends her comrades, who show her the love and affection she was deprived of from her siblings.
Tears of Joy:
- Noelle cries small tears when the Black Bulls accept her in spite of her poor magic control and encourage her to improve.
- She cries in happiness after they win against the Witch Queen thanks to Vanessa manifesting her Red Thread of Fate.
- When Asta, who she hadn't seen since the beginning of the Spade invasion, arrives to stop Lolopechka from exploding and provide Noelle some much-needed help against Megicula.
Technicolor Eyes: She has pink eyes.
Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Undine flat-out states that she'd prefer not to choose Noelle for being ill-mannered, belligerent, and noisy as her new host after Lolopechka is captured. However, Noelle's statement that Undine's kindness and love for Lolopechka isn't a weakness, even if she should have told Lolopechka about Saint Stage, convinces her to work together to defeat Vanica and rescue Lolopechka.
Tell Me About My Mother: Noelle asks Mereoleona about her deceased mother Acier when she states that she resembles her, lamenting that no one ever told anything about her since Acier's Death by Childbirth caused the Silva siblings to mock Noelle for her indirect involvement.
Thicker Than Water: When Noelle and her siblings are cornered by Kivn, she resolves to save them because they're her real family, despite noting that she doesn't have a single good memory of them up to that point. This motivation, combined with her natural talent, battle experience, and hard work, lets her learn her Valkyrie Armor spell to fight Kivn and eventually reconcile with her siblings.
This Is a Drill: When using Valkyrie Armor she forms a lance made of spiraling water that drills through spells.
This Is Unforgivable!: She shouts at Vanica, while Megicula is possessing half her body, that what she's doing should never be forgiven before impaling her with her lance.
Token Rich Student: Downplayed. Of the Black Bulls, she's the only member of royalty, with Noelle often bringing up her status. That said, the Black Bulls do have some disgraced nobility (Finral, Gauche, Henry, and Nero), and Noelle herself has essentially been disowned by the Silva family at the beginning of the story.
Took a Level in Badass: She starts off as a royal unable to control her magic, leading her to be mocked by her siblings all her life. She later becomes a defensive mage with her Sea Dragon's Lair to save a group of villagers from being killed. She gains the attack spell Sea Dragon's Roar when she overcomes her mental block to not harm others to save her friends from Vetto, ripping off his arm. Later, to protect her siblings against a reincarnated elf, she develops a new spell called Valkyrie Armor, which gives Noelle control over the mana touching her armor and improves her ability to fight in close combat.
Took a Level in Cheerfulness: At the start, Noelle, in spite of her haughtiness, suffers from low self-esteem due to her bad magic control, which made her seen as a disgrace among royals and mocked by her family. As she surrounds herself with the kind and caring Black Bulls, she becomes more confident, improving her magic, and happy, smiling more often especially in her squadmates' presence.
Took a Level in Kindness: At the beginning of the series, Noelle is a self-absorbed, pretentious jerk who often denies Asta's attempt to befriend her. But after spending time with the Black Bulls, who treat her with the kindness and love she was deprived of from her family, she becomes a much kinder person while still maintaining pride in her status as a royal. So much so that she helps a little peasant girl find her mother at the Star Festival, a huge difference from the Noelle who detested peasants in the beginning.
Training from Hell: She's subjected to this by Mereleona at the Yultim Volcano, where she practices Mana Skin.
Transformation Sequence: Her first use of her Valkyrie Armor is depicted as this in the anime, reminiscent of a Magical Girl transforming.
Tritagonist: After Asta and Yuno, her development in becoming a powerful mage and gaining confidence are significant parts of the story, and she has an important role in nearly every arc.
True Blue Femininity: Both her grimoire and mana have blue colours when in use, and she is quite feminine as well.
Tsundere: She is the harsh-type "tsun-tsun". She keeps her dere side hidden very well, but her concern for her allies is clearly shown in spite of her high-and-lofty demeanor. It gets taken up a notch when she begins to realize her feelings for Asta alongside Mimosa. She realizes her desperation at Mimosa crushing on Asta is jealousy, and then insists that she feels nothing for him. Noelle finally admits to herself that she's in love with Asta after he comes to help her against Megicula.
Two Guys and a Girl: The core trio of the series consists of Asta and Yuno as the Two Guys and Noelle as the Girl.
Unprovoked Pervert Payback: Early on, when Magna gives Asta and Noelle a ride on his broom, he tells Asta to hold on, so he innocuously grabs Noelle's waist. This leads to her elbowing him in the face without any provocation, which nearly causes him to plummet into the lake below. Afterward, she's still angry at him for what he did.
Unskilled, but Strong: Her defining trait initially was that she had great magical ability but little finesse. If it weren't for her lack of control, she would have easily been able to join one of the higher ranked Magic Knight squads. She couldn't even hit Asta, despite the fact that he was standing still right in front of her. Averted as the story progresses, and her control improves in leaps and bounds, with her already impressive power not being far behind.
Upper-Class Twit:
- She initially believes that she's superior to the other members of the Black Bulls and has preconceived notions about commoners and peasants due to her royal background, which understandably angers Asta. She gets better about this thanks to Asta and her friends.
- An early Running Gag is that she would pay exorbitant amounts of money for simple tasks.
Uptown Girl: Noelle, who's royalty, is in love with Asta, an orphan peasant from the Forsaken Realm who was born without any magic.
Used to Be a Sweet Kid: While she's a compassionate noble, she showed it more often when she was younger. Her abusive siblings hardened her, unfortunately.
Valkyries: Her Valkyrie Armor spell. She dons an armor with wing-like ornaments and wields a lance made of water that bring to mind the iconic warrior women.
Vapour Wear: Noelle doesn't wear panties or bra, in the manga there are many underskirt and cleavage shots that show this. Especially in her Saint Valkyrie form that makes no effort to hide it.
Waif-Fu: Noelle may be 161 cm (5'3") tall, but she learns a spell that clads her in a water armor complete with a lance to dodge attacks and fight up close.
Water Is Blue: The water magic she uses has a blue colour to it. This is distinct from some of her siblings, whose liquid is more a silver/metalic color.
Water Is Womanly: Noelle's magic attribute is water, and she is named "Sea Goddess" by the people of the Underwater Temple for her powerful Water Magic. She's a refined, if haughty, young woman from the kingdom's royal family who regularly wears a dress. After training for six months, she gains Valkyrie Armor — Mermaid Form which enhances her power underwater.
Warrior Princess: Noelle is a royal of the Clover Kingdom who decides to become a professional Magic Knight who defends the kingdom. Yuno describes as a "princess-type". She hones her magic to become a powerful mage, eventually manifesting a water armor to fight gracefully.
Weapon-Based Characterisation: Initially uses a Magic Wand for greater control over her magic power, at a point when she's started to accept encouragement and support from others along with her growing desire to help those around her.
We Help the Helpless: She comes to believe in this after joining the Black Bulls, stating that royals are said to have the best magic in the country and for that reason they should help everyone.
"Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: A sibling version. Due to being emotionally mistreated by them all her life for her bad magical control, Noelle desperately desires her older siblings' acknowledgement. After finding familial love in the Black Bulls instead, she tells Solid she's already been acknowledged by better people than him. Later on, Nozel's praise of her growth and apology to her, combined with her desire to save her siblings, gives Noelle the motivation to gain her Valkyrie Armor spell.
What Does She See in Him?: Mimosa tells her that she has a crush on Asta. Noelle asks Mimosa why she would like him, a stupid, short, and loud peasant. When Mimosa tells her that she finds all that charming and its gap with his body, Noelle tells her "no" and wonders why she herself sounds so desperate, denying her romantic feelings for Asta.
When She Smiles: Noelle rarely shows happiness due to her facade of acting noble but her rare smiles always feel earnt. Kiato notes that Noelle has beautiful tears and a gorgeous smile when Kahono tells her that she hasn't given up on her dream of becoming an idol singer, with Kiato falling in love with Noelle.
White Sheep: She's introduced as the sole Silva royal that isn't a raging elitist jerkass and is actually a decent human being. However, for being unable to control her magic she's seen as the Black Sheep of the Silvas and fittingly joins the Black Bulls. Well, until the aftermath of her fight with Kivn leads to her reconciliation with her siblings, at least.
Willfully Weak: Kahono reasons that Noelle is unable to control her magic for offensive use because she subconsciously does not want to harm anyone. She overcomes it thanks to Kahono's encouragement, and casts Sea Dragon's Roar which rips off Vetto's arm:
Kahono: [to Noelle] Because you're fighting to protect what's important to you. You're fighting to win!
Winged Humanoid: In her Spirit Dive: Saint Valkyrie Armor, she gains two sprawling feathered wings. In Valkyrie Armor - Dragon Form, she gains two dragonic wings.
You Killed My Mother: She says this to Vanica, who she angrily questions about killing her mother Acier as the host of Megicula.
Youngest Child Wins: Among even royals, Noelle was born with incredible magic potential comparable to, according to Tabata, her famed mother Acier Silva and Julius, the Wizard King. Despite being the family's resident Black Sheep for her poor magic control, when she gains better control she easily defeats her brother Solid at the Royal Knights Selection Exam to his disbelief, and goes on to save her siblings when they're endangered by an elf.
You Remind Me of X: Noelle reminds Nozel of their mother when she fights Kivn, forming an armor and moving gracefully like Acier.
