Magic Attribute: Shadow

"Unjust evil. They're the type I hate the most. Even if God and the devils forgive them, I never will."

The mysterious Vice Captain of the Black Bulls who has been serving as a spy in the Spade Kingdom. Nacht is a blunt man who hates the Black Bulls, but works with them and the other Magic Knights to stop the Dark Triad. Like Asta, he's devil-possessed and teaches him how to use his devil's power. Nacht is the host of four different devils: Gimodelo, Slotos, Plumede, and Walgner.

Nacht uses Shadow Magic, able to move himself and whatever he touches from one shadow to another.

    A — E
  • All-Encompassing Mantle: He wears a long cloak, and is the Black Bulls' Vice Captain introduced well into the story who has been serving as a spy within the Spade Kingdom.
  • All Your Powers Combined: He's the host of four different devils, and can undergo Devil Union with each of them, conferring onto him one of their attributes: summoning a pack of wolf humanoids, covering him in a tough, heavy armor, increasing his agility, or unleashing paralyzing sound waves. He can even use Devil Unions with the powers of two devils, like with Gallus x Felis and Canis x Equus.
  • Aloof Ally: The Vice Captain of the Black Bulls who's been a spy in the Spade Kingdom, but hates the squad for their character flaws and doesn't even like the other Magic Knights captains. His constant smiling and closed eyes yet perpetual emotionlessness, pragmatism, black-and-white morality, and being the host of four different devils make him an enigmatic ally to Asta and the rest of the Magic Knights.
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Back in his youth, Nacht had a younger twin brother named Morgen. While his brother formed a pair with Yami and became famous as a great Magic Knight, Nacht started studying devils. However, his studies led Morgen to sacrifice his life to save Nacht from a powerful devil when he recklessly went through with casting a Devil-Binding Ritual. Nacht says he still can't forgive himself for causing Morgen's death even years after the incident, and modeled his appearance after his late twin brother's. To atone, he joined the Magic Knights and dedicated his life to destroying unjust evil before it can harm good people.
  • Anti-Hero: Nacht is firmly against the Dark Triad for their meaningless evil and forms the plan to stop the Tree of Qliphoth from forming, and has a deep admiration for righteous individuals like Asta. Despite this, he's very rude and disparaging to those he sees as good-for-nothings, follows a belief that refuses to acknowledge redemption and for this reason he hates his own squad, and is willing to put Asta into a life-or-death situation for training without his prior knowledge and kill him should he lose and turn into a monster as a result. He tries to persuade Asta to subjugate Liebe into a slave, believing all devils to be unprincipled, but is happily proven wrong with a genuine smile when Asta makes an equal contract with Liebe out of mutual friendship.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Grey speaks up and tells him not to judge Magna and Zora by how they look, he replies that they shouldn't look like that if they don't want to be judged, with Grey unable to respond.
  • The Atoner: Nacht joining the Magic Knights and his goal of destroying evil before it can harm good people stems from having been an amoral delinquent who cast a Devil-Binding Ritual which led to his moral brother Morgen's death in stopping it, seeing himself as unforgivable for it and willing to sacrifice himself if needed to save those who're right.
  • Badass Cape: His Devil Union Mode: Canis forms a furred, mantled cape made of shadows and gives him the power to utterly trounce Asta for most of their training.
  • Badass Longrobe: Devil Union Mode: Gallus gives him a dark robe complete with a feathered mantle.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: He is a devil host who uses a magic that forms long, creepy arms of shadow, but is a Magic Knight who infiltrated the Spade Kingdom and offers to teach Asta how to use his devil's power.
  • Bash Brothers: Yami and Nacht go back to being this after their friendship is repaired, with the two teaming up against Lucifero.
  • Beneath the Mask: Underneath Nacht's seeming smugness, stoicism, and rudeness is a deep self-loathing for causing his brother's death when he was reckless and unprincipled, with it heavily implied that Nacht's dislike of good-for-nothings like the Black Bulls is projection of his hatred for his past self.
  • Berserk Button: Although Nacht easily detests someone for their faults, he especially hates Yami and mannerisms that remind Nacht of him. He gets visibly irked when Asta mimics Yami's swordsmanship while fighting Liebe. Asta takes advantage of this when he states that he'll "surpass [his] limits" while training against Nacht to locate him, with Nacht stating that he hates that phrase. It's later revealed that Nacht hates the phrase because Yami's influence on Nacht in part caused him to recklessly perform a Devil-Binding Ritual of the high-ranking devil Lucifugus, stating that he would surpass his limits despite Morgen trying to convince him not to go through with it, which led to his brother's death. When Asta points out his similarity to Yami, Nacht messes with him using his shadow arms. It's later shown that it's less Nacht's hate for Yami than it is Nacht's hate for reminders of himself in the past that caused Morgen's death.
  • Beware the Honest Ones: Nacht is Brutally Honest to the derision of those around him. He's also a powerful mage who has the power of four different devils as well as sly and pragmatic, willing to resort to dangerous methods to make Asta strong enough within a few days.
  • Big Brother Worship: Inverted. Nacht deeply admired his younger twin brother Morgen for his altruism and kindness, so much so that he didn't want his presence as a selfish troublemaker who would later dabble in Forbidden Magic to taint it. Causing Morgen's death left Nacht in deep mourning and guilt, causing him to change his appearance to his Morgen's and become a Magic Knight to honor his memory.
  • Birds of a Feather: Nacht befriended Yami shortly after getting his grimoire because of their similar magics and rough personalities, with the two causing trouble together.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Nacht believes that the greatest people are good from the beginning and can't stand those who're unable to properly do their jobs like the Black Bulls in the past. He hates them for that and their personality faults and thinks that their accomplishments during the war against the elves doesn't erase their past failures. Nacht outright states that he hates it when nasty-looking or bad people are more liked after they suddenly do something good.
  • Black Magic: He's a master of Devil Magic, able to fuse with each of his four devils and summon a devil into the living world using relics, or Asta's now possessed arm in the case of Liebe.
  • Black Sheep: Subverted. Nacht saw himself as this all his life to his family, being an irresponsible, amoral delinquent until his parents chose him as the heir to the House of Faust and their legacy of demonology over his more responsible, moral twin brother because of these traits. This made him realize that Morgen was actually the White Sheep of the family all along.
  • Blue Blood: He was born one of the twin sons of the distinguished noble House of Faust.
  • Body Motifs: Hands, typically using his Shadow Magic to remotely manifest arms and hands to quickly take down opponents, befitting his pragmatic nature.
  • Breakout Character: Became loved by many fans not long after his introduction for his Brutal Honesty, mysterious nature, pragmatism, shadow powers, and the sleek designs of his Devil Unions, with Weekly Shonen Jump even mentioning the popularity of his character with Japanese readers. In the fifth popularity poll, he placed third, behind only Asta and Noelle.
  • Break the Haughty: Became overconfident in his genius in Devil Magic and decided to go through with summoning the high-ranking devil Lucifugus, who killed his parents and the other cultists and had his brother Morgen stop the ritual at the cost of his life. The event left Nacht in grief over his brother's death and unable to forgive himself for it, turning him from a bad boy delinquent into a more serious, logical person well-aware of his own limits.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Was a lazy, troublemaking delinquent but showed a genius talent in Devil Magic when his parents chose him to be the heir to their legacy of demonology. Definitely no longer Lazy after he became a Magic Knight following Morgen's death, which changed Nacht to become a more active, moral person devoted to destroying evil.
  • Brutal Honesty: He has no filter whatsoever. When he first meets Asta, Nacht tells him that he has no chance defeating any of the Dark Triad and that going off to save Yami would be stupid and reckless, later calling him a fool. He also lists of all of Yami's negative qualities to Asta to show his familiarity with him. When first meeting the Black Bulls, he lists out their, very much true, flaws as reasons for why he hates them.
  • Byronic Hero: Nacht is a Magic Knight who detests evil and is dedicated to destroying it, whether it be devils or the villainous Dark Triad, before it can harm good people. It's later revealed that he developed into this after his ritual to summon Lucifugus went wrong and his brother Morgen sacrificed himself to stop it, with Nacht unable to forgive himself for this and his moral brother's death motivating him to save those who're righteous.
  • Casting a Shadow: He uses Shadow Magic, hiding within shadows and dragging foes into them, and forming long arms out of shadows.
  • Childhood Friends: With Yami, becoming friends due to being young delinquents with similar magics and getting into trouble together. This friendship lasted until Nacht caused the death of his twin brother Morgen, Yami's squadmate in the Gray Deer, with Nacht feeling guilt for taking Morgen from Yami and Yami reminding Nacht of his past self that he came to hate. Their friendship is saved when Yami still calls Nacht his friend and tells him to keep living and save people for Morgen when Nacht says that he doesn't care if he dies and shouldn't be saved.
  • Clothing Damage: His top and pants get torn while fighting Lilith and Naamah.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He's first seen lurking in the shadows and then dragging a Spade soldier into it from behind. And when he trains Asta and Liebe, Nacht resorts to using Mana Zone to turn the area pitch-black and having his pack of wolves attack them while they can't see or sense their ki. When fighting Lilith and Naamah, when it becomes clear he can't defeat them, Nacht chooses to use his Mana Zone to avoid their attacks indefinitely.
  • Combination Attack: With Yami while fighting Lucifero, using Shadow Magic x Dark Magic: Kids' Playground through their Mana Zones to form the buildings they caused trouble through as kids, with the dark spreading shadows and shadows creating darkness for infinite synergy between their magics.
  • Cosmic Motifs: The Moon. He's associated with one half of a white moon on the Chapter 326 color spread (the other half associated with Yami), his name means "night", is cold and mysterious, has an ethereal look about him, and uses shadow magic.
  • The Cowl: Vowed to become this because of his guilt over causing Morgen's death, refusing the spotlight and praise and instead destroying evil from the shadows before it can harm the right. As such, he acted as a spy within the Spade Kingdom for years to obtain intel. He's a devil host with shadow powers, and willing to sacrifice himself if needed to achieve his goals.
  • Creepy Blue Eyes: He has very pale blue eyes which add to his eerie look whenever he does open his eyes on top of his perpetual smile.
  • Creepy Good: He's a devil host who wears a hooded cloak and uses Shadow Magic that can form creepily long arms, and is the Black Bulls' Vice Captain.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique:
    • Performs a devil-binding ritual, a form of Forbidden Magic, for Asta to gain the power of his devil with the drawback that he gets fully taken over by his devil and becomes a grotesque monster if he loses. When asked by Asta if they shouldn't be doing this, Nacht blatantly points out that they only have two days and questions if he actually thought that they could use decent methods to grow stronger in that timeframe.
    • His Devil-Binding Ritual summoned the high-ranking devil Lucifugus but with its unsuppressed magical power, leading to the deaths of his parents and other cultists until Morgen stopped the ritual by destroying the relic used to summon it, which led to his own death to Nacht's immense grief.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Mocks Jack during their fight with Dante for being crushed under his Gravity Magic in spite of all his talk, telling him to let his skills do the talking instead. It works when he forms blades throughout his body to slice through Dante's gravity and wound him.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Fitting with the rest of the squad's dark theme. He uses a magic involving shadows and is a spy trying to foil the Dark Triad's plans. He's even a devil host.
  • Darkness Von Gothick Name: Nacht Faust, the cryptic vice captain of the Black Bulls as well as a shadow user and devil host. His first name literally means "night" in German. And his last name comes from the myth of Faust, a German scholar who made a Deal with the Devil.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Prone to making snide remarks about someone if there's anything about them that he dislikes.
  • Deal with the Devil: Like Asta, he is a devil host, having made contracts with four devils, and offers to teach him how to use the power of a devil.
  • Delinquent Hair: Born with black hair, he had it dyed light and in a long, free hairstyle as a teenager, and was a troublemaking, irresponsible delinquent.
  • Determinator: Resorts to dodging indefinitely when Lilith and Naamah seem impossible for him to defeat instead of running away out of his hatred for evil. Even getting impaled throughout his body won't prevent Nacht from trying to stop them.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Uses his intel gained from being a spy in the Spade Kingdom for years to concoct a plan to stop the Dark Triad and prevent the Tree of Qliphoth forming by saving Yami and Vangeance. Although it goes as planned at first with the initial fights against the Dark Triad, Nacht's plan gets derailed when Morris reveals himself to be a devil host and uses himself as an accelerant for the Qliphoth's formation to Nacht's complete shock. His initial strategy gets rendered naught with unexpected events like the Triad entering their 100% forms, devils emerging from the Qliphoth, Magna defeating Dante, and Morris using his magic to modify the Qliphoth so that the Triad are no longer needed and Lucifero will come out of the second gate.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Morgen died in Nacht's arms after he sacrificed himself to destroy the relic used in his brother's ritual to summon Lucifugus.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Nacht will condemn others, go on an invasion, and tell Asta to enslave Liebe all with a pleasant tone, his eyes closed, and a smile on his face. He only opens his eyes and stops smiling during more serious moments, such as when he condemns the Dark Triad, Asta refuses to enslave Liebe, and he tells Asta that he wants him to rewarded because he's always been right.
  • Domain Holder: Nacht can use Mana Zone, covering the surrounding environment in his Shadow Magic and turning it pitch-black, preventing Asta from sensing anything.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: When Henry recalls the members of the Black Bulls whose presence in the hideout saved his life, the distinct boot of Nacht, who up to that point had not been introduced until over a hundred chapters later, can be seen among the other Black Bulls' shoes.
  • Easily Condemned: Nacht hates it when evil people or failures suddenly do something good, making others find them more likable. He believes the greatest people are good from the beginning.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He has long black hair in a ponytail and pale skin, and is a devil host with Shadow Magic who always eerily smiles and usually keeps his eyes closed.
  • Egocentrically Religious: Nacht called himself out for this when he realized that he was begging the gods to save his brother after being irresponsible and self-centered all his life:
"Don't go spouting whatever's convenient for you at the time. You did whatever you wanted. Now when you're in trouble, you count on the gods? Don't gimme that, you idiot. Who in their right mind would save you?"
  • Eldritch Location: His Mana Zone: Dark Prison Hunting Ground is this, turning the environment pitch-black with swirling masses of long arms that attack targets.
  • Elemental Armor: Nacht's Devil Union Mode: Equus covers him in an armor made of shadows complete with long shields on his arms, with its characteristic as "toughness".
  • Elemental Hair Colors: Nacht has long black hair tied in a ponytail and uses Shadow Magic. It's later revealed that he had it dyed a light color as a teenager.
  • Elemental Motifs: Shadows, befitting his magic. His status as a delinquent in his youth matches the darker aspects of the element, while as an adult he remains out of the limelight until the Spade Kingdom becomes prominent, having focused on gathering intelligence in the meantime. He also adopts a much colder, pragmatic mindset, and is easily one of the most ruthless members of the Black Bulls, not mincing words even to his squadmates.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: A more subdued example than most, but Nacht can't stand incompetency which is the reason why he hates the Black Bulls and never came to the hideout, because they were a band of destructive good-for-nothings in the past which he believes isn't necessarily erased by their recent accomplishments in the war against the elves.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his first formal appearance, he brings up Yami's negative qualities, calls Asta a fool for trying to go save him, but tells him that he likes him for his sincerity. This establishes Nacht as being a Brutally Honest, logical person who hates Yami (along with the other Black Bulls) and has an admiration for those who are morally righteous.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: Nacht has a scar on his left wrist from where Lucifugus' relic was destroyed by Morgen, which led to his death and Nacht to completely change as a person out of guilt.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Performed a Devil-Binding Ritual to summon the high-ranking devil Lucifugus, whose power was too strong and ended up killing Nacht's parents and the other cultists and had his brother Morgen sacrifice his life to stop the ritual and the devil.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: As a troublemaker in the past who recklessly dabbled in Devil Magic, Nacht had dyed free-flowing light hair. In the present day, he has his hair in its natural black color in a ponytail, in the same style as his late brother after he caused his death in a devil-binding ritual gone wrong.
  • Eye Colour Change: Nacht's blue eyes become red when he uses his devil power.
  • Eyes Always Shut: His eyes are almost always closed, only opening when he's speaking during more serious moments.
    F — O
  • Fairy Tale Motifs: He can summon four different devils (Gimodelo, Slotos, Plumede, and Walgner) based on a dog, donkey, cat, and rooster respectively, a reference to The Bremen Town Musicians. Despite being enslaved through Devil-Binding Rituals, the devils became loyal to Nacht because of the experiences in the human world they've had thanks to him after having lived in the underworld.
  • Fan Disservice: Nacht gets his shirt torn off... from Lilith and Naamah attacking him with ice and fire as they torture him to fulfill their sadistic desire of hearing him scream.
  • Fan of the Underdog: Despite hating the other Black Bulls for their pasts and rambunctiousness, Nacht highly respects Asta for always having been a good, honest person who's been right from the start despite his life as a Cosmic Plaything, having watched him since he joined the squad. Nacht himself believes that those who're right aren't always rewarded, but tells Asta that he wants the right like him to be rewarded.
  • Foil: To Yami. Yami is the captain of the Black Bulls while Nacht is the vice captain. Yami uses Dark Magic while Nacht wields Shadow Magic. Yami established the Black Bulls to create a refuge for societal misfits. Nacht detests the Black Bulls for their flaws, so much so that he never came to the squad's base. Yami is a gruff man whose uncouthness hides a deep care for his subordinates. Nacht, on the other hand, is a Perpetual Smiler who easily hates others. Yami’s creed is for the Black Bulls to surpass their limits and become stronger by being placed in dangerous situations. Nacht is fully aware of the limits of his power as well as Asta's, and trains him for days so that he may master his devil's powers.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Nacht was the Foolish Sibling to his twin brother Morgen's Responsible Sibling, being a troublesome delinquent who had done bad things since childhood while Morgen was a selfless person since he was young who joined the Magic Knights. Interestingly enough, their parents sought Nacht out to be the heir to the House of Faust to study demonology because of his amorality instead of Morgen as Nacht himself expected. Morgen sacrificed himself to stop Nacht's ritual that summoned Lucifugus, leading to his death and Nacht to become a more responsible, moral person devoted to destroying evil.
  • Former Teen Rebel: Since he was a child and as a teenager, Nacht was a delinquent disapproved of by others, creating trouble with Yami as young teens. However, his recklessness in summoning Lucifugus in a Devil-Binding Ritual caused the death of his twin brother Morgen, causing Nacht to never forgive himself for it and dedicating himself to destroying evil before it lays its hand on good people.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Not that he tries to be friends with them, but the only person Nacht is shown to respect among the Black Bulls is Asta. It's revealed he never came to the hideout because he hates Yami and the rest of the squad. When first meeting the other members, Nacht outright states he can't stand them, points out each of their flaws, and leaves them to their own while he trains Asta. He finally comes around to them after dealing with his guilt.
Nacht (to the Black Bulls): I can't stand people like you. People who don't do things right. But I'm that way myself. So let me live with you guys... properly, this time.
  • Fusion Dance: Using Devil Union Mode lets Nacht merge with one of his four devils. He fully draws out its power and adds it characteristics to his Shadow Magic.
    • He can even fuse with two at once, using Devil Union Mode: Gallus x Felis to boost his power to that of a supreme devil. Sadly, it isn't enough to stop Lilith and Naamah, whose magics can burn and freeze even invisible concepts.
    • Nacht uses Devil Union Mode: Canis x Equus to form giant equine hellhounds to momentarily immobilize Lucifero. But because it's Lucifero, it almost immediately gets undone.
    • After Slotos is taken out, he uses Canis x Felis in his team-up with Yami against Lucifero.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: His Devil-Binding Ritual summoned the high-ranking devil Lucifugus... but without its magical power suppressed. This caused the devil to attack people aside from the ritual caster, killing Nacht's parents and other cultists. Morgen destroying the relic to stop the ritual led to his death to Nacht's immense grief.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Nacht states that he doesn't even want to understand why the Dark Triad would hurt others without guilt so long as they benefit.
  • Good Is Not Nice: He's been acting as a spy against the Spade Kingdom and helps Asta master his devil's power to defeat the Dark Triad. Aside from that, he easily hates people and can't stand the Black Bulls, pointing out their flaws to their face and calling them Destructive Saviors whose past failures aren't erased by their recent accomplishments.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Very much on the side of good and deeply loathes the Dark Triad for their meaningless evil, but is willing to resort to forcing Asta into a ritual that will have him lose control of his body and turn into a mindless monster that Nacht himself will kill if he loses. And when Asta and Liebe's results aren't sufficient enough in their training, Nacht turns to lethal methods to get them to achieve Devil Union.
  • Gratuitous Latin: His Devil Union Modes are Latin: "Canis" for "dog", "Equus" for "horse", "Felis" for "cat", and "Gallus" for "rooster".
  • Has a Type: According to the Volume 31 Questions Brigade, he likes someone who is righteous.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: It's easy for Nacht to dislike someone. He hates Yami to the point he's only been to the hideout once, the Black Bulls for being destructive good-for-nothings even in spite of their major role against the elves, and tells the captains to be quiet because he hates people who can't even hold proper meetings. This is Played for Drama when he mentions how he hates the Dark Triad the most for being unrepentant scum who hurt others. That said, he states he likes Asta for being a good person, and doesn't hate people like Yuno. And the person he hates most of all is himself.
  • Hellhound: His Canis x Equus Devil Union has him form two giant equine-hellhounds out of shadow to bite down on Lucifero's arms with their teeth to temporarily stop him. Lucifero undoes it right after.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Under all his rude comments about other people who are "good-for-nothings" lays a projection of his hatred towards his own self who used to be irresponsible, a delinquent and, more importantly, caused his brother's death. When he loses against Naamah and Lilith, he even says that Asta shouldn't worry about him and go defeat the Dark Triad because he is not important, and Yami to not save him because he doesn't want anyone, especially an irreplaceable friend like him, to die saving someone like him. Asta and Yami of course will have none of that.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Although he is quick to deride someone for their actions and character, Nacht holds a deep admiration for people like Asta he sees as morally right who have always been good since the beginning. He smiles happily when Asta's decision to make an equal contract with Liebe instead of enslaving him turns out to be the right one. And after their training, he tells Asta that he wants people like him to be rewarded even if the world doesn't always let them be.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like other devil hosts, using his devils' power manifests wegs on his head.
  • Hypocrite: Played With. Nacht believes that the best people are those who've always been good and hates it when people who've been bad become liked suddenly when they do something good, despite having formerly been an amoral, unethical person even as a child until he caused the death of his brother Morgen, who sacrificed himself to stop his Devil-Binding Ritual. However, Nacht himself holds a deep self-loathing for his past self and causing Morgen's death, stating that he'll never forgive himself, and his ideology was born out of admiration for his late brother, who was a selfless person even as a child. Nacht doesn't think of himself as a good person at all, and can't stand the idea that anybody would see him as a hero for doing good things only after his selfishness got his genuinely heroic brother killed.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Pale blue eyes and an eerily calm man who will deride anyone with a smile on his face.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He gets impaled throughout his body by Lilith and Naamah.
  • Instant Armor: Devil Union Mode: Equus covers him in a shadow armor that looks like a castle tower, and gives him the toughness to withstand Dante's Gravity Magic.
  • In the Blood: The House of Faust was dedicated to studying devils for generations, with Nacht's parents choosing him as their heir and Nacht showing a genius talent in Devil Magic.
  • In the Hood:
    • He sneaks into Dante's room while wearing a hooded cloak, obscuring his face to the readers. He unveils himself when he first meets Asta.
    • In Union Mode: Felis he wears a hooded jacket to fit with its sleek, ninja-like look.
  • I Work Alone: Why Nacht took up the Vice Captain position. It gives him the freedom and convenience to operate as a Magic Knight without him having to work with people who can't do things properly like the Black Bulls, whom he can't stand. Nacht only starts working with the other Magic Knights when Yami and Vangeance are captured and they need to plan the Spade Kingdom assault force to rescue them and stop the Tree of Qliphoth from forming.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • He tells an emotionally distraught Asta, who wants to go off to save Yami, that there are two others just as strong as Dante, his devil considers him hopeless, and he doesn't understand his new devil arm, so going now wouldn't be courageous but stupid and reckless.
    • When mentioning that he can't stand the Black Bulls, Nacht brings up each of their flaws, all of which are true. And despite their vast improvement since Asta joined, he is correct in that they were, for a long time, good-for-nothings who caused more damage than exploits, and their major role in the war against the elves doesn't erase their past failures.
  • Karmic Jackpot: A core philosophy of Nacht's. He deeply respects people like Asta who are good and wants the morally right like him to be rewarded even if they aren't always. This stems from his guilt over causing the death of his twin brother Morgen, who was an ideal and selfless Magic Knight in contrast with Nacht, who at the time was a selfish troublemaker.
"Using shadow magic, I watched you and the other Black Bulls. You were born without magic. By accident, you were possessed by a devil and toyed with by unforgiving fate. But you were always right. I said that people who were right weren't necessarily rewarded. However, I would like them to be!"
  • Kill the Lights: His spell Mana Zone: Dark Prison Hunting Ground shrouds the surrounding environment in shadows and cuts off all light, turning it pitch-black, with Asta unable to sense the ki of Nacht's wolf pack. He does this to force Asta and Liebe's backs against the wall for them to achieve Devil Union.
  • Last of His Kind: The last living member of the House of Faust. His parents were killed when he summoned Lucifugus and his younger twin brother Morgen died from destroying the relic used in the ritual to stop it.
  • Lean and Mean: Nacht has a thin build and is very blunt and rude with a dislike for most of his fellow Magic Knights.
  • Light/Darkness Juxtaposition: Morgen was the Light to Nacht's Darkness. Morgen was a loving, kind person beloved by everyone who would endanger himself to save others while Nacht was an irresponsible, amoral delinquent who used Shadow Magic and devoted himself to studying devils as part of his family's legacy. Nacht even means "night" in German while Morgen means "morning" in German. Morgen's dream was for him and his brother to protect the country as Magic Knights of shadow and light.
  • Living Shadow: In his Devil Union Mode: Canis, Nacht can summon a pack of humanoid wolf shadows with the same ki as him using Gimodelo's power. He has them fight Asta for training.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has long dark hair in a ponytail to compliment his androgynous face.
  • Magical Accessory: He has a necklace of relics linked to his four devils with animal masks: a rooster feather, donkey tail, and dog and cat claws.
  • Marked Change: Black lines appear on his face whenever he uses his devils' power.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: Has a sacrificial nature over his guilt from causing his brother's guilt, vowing to never forgive himself for it and to atone for the rest of his life. He's willing to trap himself in an eternal game of tag with Lilith and Naamah, and trap himself and them in his Monument of Atonement spell forever. When Asta comes to save him, he tells him to go defeat the Dark Triad instead of saving him despite him already being there, with Asta telling him to live to witness his new strength thanks to him. This self-sacrificing comes up again when Nacht tries to sacrifice himself to save Asta from Lucifero, only for Yami to save him and successfully convince Nacht to keep living and save people to honor his brother's memory, still considering Nacht his friend.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "Nacht" is German for "night", and he's a devil host who uses Shadow Magic. It contrasts with the name of his brother Morgen, which means "morning" in German.
    • His surname is Faust, the legend of a German scholar who sold his soul to the Devil for pleasure and knowledge. The House of Faust was engaged in studying devils for generations. Nacht arrogantly performed a Devil-Binding Ritual of the high-ranking devil Lucifugus that his brother Morgen sacrificed his life to stop, which completely changed Nacht's personality.
  • Me's a Crowd: When using Devil Union with Gimodelo, who has the characteristic "pack", Nacht can clone countless wolf humanoid shadows of himself that won't disappear until he's defeated.
  • The Mole: He's serving as a spy within the Spade Kingdom, searching for information on the Dark Triad's plans within Dante's room.
  • Mr. Exposition: Having been a spy in the Spade Kingdom, at the captains' meeting he explains the Dark Triad's plan for the advent of the Qliphoth and Yami and Vangeance's roles as sacrificial offerings.
  • Multiform Balance: Thanks to being the host of four different devils:
    • His Devil Union Mode: Canis has the characteristic of "pack", letting him summon wolf humanoids made of shadows to gang up on targets.
    • Nacht's Devil Union Mode: Equus has the characteristic of "toughness", covering Nacht in a large armor with longshields letting him stand against Dante's Gravity Magic and trade blows with him.
    • Devil Union Mode: Felis has the characteristic of "agility", letting Nacht avoid an attack from high-ranking devils that even sent Jack flying.
    • Gallus has the characteristic of "call", letting him unleash sound waves that can freeze enemies momentarily.
  • Must Make Amends: Nacht's goal to destroy evil before it harms good people stems from his guilt over causing the death of his brother Morgen, who was much more kind and just than him, when his Devil-Binding Ritual of Lucifugus went awry. He states that he's dedicated his life to this mission and won't ever forgive himself for it.
  • My Greatest Failure: His Devil-Binding Ritual to summon Lucifugus led to his brother Morgen's death in stopping it, with Nacht stating that he will never forgive himself for it and vowing to destroy evil before it touches good people because of this.
  • My Sibling Will Live Through Me: After Morgen's death because of Nacht's Devil-Binding Ritual, he changed his hair back to its original style to resemble his twin brother's, adopted his brother's perpetually happy demeanor, and became a Magic Knight, with Morgen having joined the Gray Deer and dreamed of the two working together as Magic Knights to protect the kingdom.
  • Mysterious Watcher: While a spy in the Spade Kingdom, he was watching the Black Bulls the whole time through his Devil Union: Felis's ability to see through shadows, which allowed him to learn about Asta's life prior to meeting him and gain a deep admiration of him for being right and overcoming fate. Yami deduces this when they reunite, with Nacht admitting that they've surpassed his expectations during the Spade raid.
  • Mythical Motifs:
    • Faust. Like the scholar Faust who made a contract with Mephistopheles to exchange his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasure, the delinquent Nacht without any purpose eagerly delved into devil magic when he showed a gift for it, feeling joy from the malice inside himself. Nacht's summoning of Lucifugus leads to the death of his beloved, good, and righteous brother Morgen, tying into how Mephistopheles kills the good humanity within Faust in the myth. Nacht and Morgen being polar opposites references the myth's theme of polarity. And Nacht's character arc of atonement goes with the myth's aesop that humanity is capable of sin but able to be forgiven through repenting.
    • Devils, given that he has four under his control and frequently uses Devil Union with them, giving him horns to evoke the same appearance. Also fits given his families history of studying devils and his own shadow magic in spite of his heroic character.
  • Ninja: His Devil Union Mode: Felis appearance invokes this with a hood, long scarf, and belts wrapped around his arms and torso.
  • Noble Bigot: Despite being the Vice Captain of the Black Bulls working to stop the Dark Triad, he's shown to have some classist tendencies, mentioning that the absent Magna and Zora are peasants when deriding the Black Bulls.
  • Not Afraid to Die: Is not scared of dying fighting Lilith and Naamah, stating that he won't run away because he can't forgive their unjust evil. So much so that he's willing to enter an eternal game of tag with them, and when that doesn't work trap himself with them for all eternity in his "Monument of Atonement". He tells Asta that he doesn't matter and to go defeat the Dark Triad instead when he comes to save him, with Asta replying that he does matter and should live to witness his new strength thanks to him, with Nacht reminded of Morgen and realizing that all this time he was "hoping a new morning would dawn".
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Asta points out that he's a lot like Yami when he tells Asta "well done, you idiot" after he defeats Lilith and Naamah. He hilariously binds Asta with his shadow arms when he does, but notes that looking at Yami reminds him of who he used to be.
  • Not So Stoic: His emotional moments are made all the more prominent with his smiling yet composed, near emotionlessness most of the time:
    • He breaks his constant smile when Asta proposes making an equal contract with Liebe, telling him there's no merit in a contract where the devil has no guarantee that he'll listen to him. He makes a genuinely happy smile when Asta does befriend Liebe and makes an equal contract with him, telling Asta that he chose right.
    • He opens his eyes and stops smiling when he tells Asta that he has been watching over him and the Black Bulls all this time, telling Asta that he's always been right and that he wants the right people to be rewarded.
    • Nacht sweats profusely after Asta enters Devil Union for the first time, with it nearly hitting him with a slash and erasing part of his own Union Mode and magic.
    • He looks downright terrified when sensing that Morris is acting as an accelerant for the Tree of Qliphoth, rushing to try to stop him before Lilith and Naamah appear after the gate is opened.
  • Number Two: Despite having never been seen until well into the story, he is the Black Bulls' Vice Captain. He begins acting the part after the Spade Raid, telling the squad to behave and leading them to find Asta.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Very pale blue eyes and a powerful mage with the power of four devils.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Managed to have defeated four different devils that he had subdued in devil-binding rituals.
  • Oxymoronic Being: Nacht is a self-contradictory character — he hates the Black Bulls but is the squad's Vice Captain, he believes that devils have no principles but is the host of four devils, calls Asta a fool but states that he's right, and believes that the best people are those who are good from the beginning but is friendly with his devils, who he each bound to a slave contract.
    P — S
  • The Paralyzer: In Devil Union Mode: Gallus, he can shout a rooster crow that momentarily paralyzes listeners.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents were killed by Lucifugus when he was summoned in a Devil-Binding Ritual without his powers suppressed.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Nacht dedicated himself to destroying evil with evil from the shadows, seeing himself as unforgivable and not letting himself be praised or stand in the spotlight, after causing Morgen's death.
  • Perpetual Smiler: He always smiles, even when mentioning that he hates Yami and telling the Magic Knights captains to be quiet. He stops smiling in his more serious moments, however.
  • Personality Powers: Nacht uses Shadow Magic and is an enigmatic, pragmatic individual who served as a spy in the Spade Kingdom for years. His backstory reveals that because of the guilt of his past sins he can't let himself be praised or stand in the spotlight, vowing to destroy evil with evil from the shadows until he dies.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite Nacht easily despising others for their flaws, especially the Black Bulls, he shows a much softer side to Asta for his moral righteousness. When Asta makes an equal contract with Liebe, Nacht even smiles and compliments him for his decision. And after he finishes training him, Nacht tells Asta that he wants people like him who're right to be rewarded.
  • Plague Doctor: Devil Union Mode: Gallus gives him a beaked plague mask complete with a feathered mantle, hat, and robe.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Says this to Mereoleona, who's bathing but emerges without hesitation, when he seeks her out to join the Spade Kingdom assault force.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: The House of Faust had twin sons, with Morgen being the picture of a good man, beloved by many and having joined the Magic Knights to save others while Nacht was a delinquent disapproved of by others who used his magic only for himself. Morgen's name even means "morning" in German while Nacht means "night" in German.
  • Powers via Possession: He's the host of four different devils that he can fuse with in Devil Union Mode to fully use their powers.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Nacht follows his own personal moral code. Despite being firmly on the side of good, he's blunt and rude to anyone he deems a failure due to their personal flaws, and believes the best people are those who are good from the beginning. He sees no merit in making an equal contract with a devil whereby the devil would have no guarantee of obedience. That said, he's happy when Asta proves him wrong, and wants those who are right like Asta to be rewarded for their actions.
  • Production Throwback: Nacht shares the same name as a character from Tabata's previous manga Hungry Joker.
  • Psychological Projection: Heavily implied that his dislike for the Black Bulls is this. Nacht hates them for being flawed misfits, believing that their recent achievements doesn't make up for their past failures as the worst Magic Knights squad. He's later revealed to have been a no-good delinquent like them in the past until he inadvertently caused his brother Morgen's death when he went through with the devil binding ritual of the supreme devil Lucifugus, with Nacht hating himself for this and vowing to never forgive himself over it.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Nacht wields a purple grimoire, wears purple boots and belts, and is a very powerful mage with the power of four devils and the ability to use Mana Zone, easily trouncing Black Asta during his training.
  • Purple Is the New Black: Nacht uses Shadow Magic but his grimoire is colored purple.
  • Reasoning with God: When Morgen died from stopping Nacht's Devil-Binding Ritual, he pleaded with the gods to save his brother, thinking that he should have died instead. He quickly realized that he has no right to ask because he's been doing whatever he wanted and is only counting on them now when he's in trouble.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives one to the Black Bulls for why he can't stand them:
"A brazen witch who does nothing but drink. A spatial mage who was so careless with women that it interfered with his missions. A ruined noble and former convict. And then, although I don't see them here, there's an evil-looking, openly delinquent peasant. An evil-looking belligerent masked peasant. …Etc., etc. Granted, you do seem like a bunch that worthless man would pull together."
  • Remember the New Guy?: The Black Bulls ask him why he's never come to the hideout before. Not only has he been a spy in the Spade Kingdom for some time, but he can't stand the Black Bulls so he's only been to the hideout once. And as a Vice Captain, he has the freedom to operate wherever he wants. The only people who knew that he's been the Vice Captain are Julius and Yami, who forced Nacht to take the position against his will.
  • Removed from the Picture: A family picture in his old how has three people blacked out, leaving only one person still visible. It is later revealed that the remaining person is his late twin brother Morgan. Nacht apparently removed himself from the picture as well as their parents, with Morgan the only person in his family, including himself, that he still respects.
  • Ritual Magic: He performs a Devil-Binding Ritual for Asta to make a contract with his devil and formally make its power his own, summoning the devil for Asta to defeat.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Nacht's spell Monument of Atonement, from gaining the power of fusing with two devils, forms a black tomb above and below Lilith and Naamah. The top half of the tomb has his brother Morgen's gravestone, representing Nacht's guilt over causing Morgen's death and atoning for it by trapping himself and the devils in a shadow world forever. However, Lilith and Naamah's magics can affect invisible concepts and they break out of it.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: Gains a long scarf made of shadows in his Devil Union Mode: Felis to compliment his ninja-like look.
  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: A variation. His Devil Mode: Felis gives him this, using the spell "Heaven's Shadow Second Sight" to see through shadows to other locations, sensing Morris accelerating the opening to the gate of the underworld.
  • Self-Made Orphan: His Devil-Binding Ritual of Lucifugus went awry and resulted in the deaths of his parents and brother.
  • Shadow Pin: He can form a large shadow on the ground that stops his target from moving.
  • Shadow Walker: He has this magic, using it to hide in a shadow and drag a Spade Kingdom soldier who notices him into it.
  • Shout-Out: His form when using his devil Gimodelo's power, which forms a dark cape and tricorn hat atop the rest of his outfit, is clearly inspired by the Hunter from Bloodborne.
  • Significant Birth Date: Nacht's birthday is April 30 which is Walpurgisnacht, originally a festival in honor of Saint Walpurga which has become associated with Satanism. In Faust: First Part of the Tragedy, Walpurgisnacht is a dark celebration in which witches gather to celebrate the Devil. During this festival in the play, Mephistopheles distracts Faust from Gretchen's gruesome fate to try to complete his moral degradation.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: He makes Asta become stronger by casting a Devil-Binding Ritual to summon his devil for him to defeat, with Asta losing his body to Liebe and becoming a demonic monster that Nacht would kill himself if he loses. After he makes an equal contract with him, Nacht uses his devils' power and makes them try to defeat him, calling it the beginning of the training. When they don't meet his expectations after two days of training, he resorts to using Mana Zone and trying to kill them.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Was a smoker as a young man, fitting with him being a bad boy then. In the present-day Nacht hasn't been seen smoking, having become a more serious, responsible person after causing Morgen's death.
  • Smug Smiler: He maintains his smile when talking down on and insulting others, even when asking the Magic Knight captains to be quiet.
  • Sole Survivor: The only person to have survived his Devil-Binding Ritual that summoned Lucifugus, with his parents and the cultists killed by the devil and his brother Morgen dying from interfering with the ritual by destroying the relic that was used.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Has an abrasive, blunt personality quick to point out someone's flaws and express his hate for them. It's tied to him being a former unethical delinquent who inadvertently caused his brother's death, which he'll never forgive himself for.
  • Straight Man: The Black Bulls are, for the most part, a rambunctious bunch who each have a defining quirk to their personality. Nacht differs a lot from the rest of the squad thanks to his competence, pragmatism, and seriousness, chiding Asta for hastily trying to save Yami and training him for three days because he's well aware of the Magic Knights' current limits. He outright hates most of the squad except for Asta, thinking them to be flawed, useless misfits and wanting nothing to do with them as Vice Captain until Yami is captured.
  • The Strategist: Being very logical, pragmatic, and with information about the Spade Kingdom and Dark Triad's plans from being an undercover spy for years, he acts as this during the Spade Kingdom invasion.
  • Strong and Skilled: Nacht is a powerful mage with the skill using his Shadow Magic for many different applications: hiding in them, transporting foes, transporting himself and many others through them, and giving them properties such as the power to summon a pack of wolves to attack, a tough armor, extra agility, as well as the power to see through shadows by uniting with his four different devils. He's even one of the very few mages in the story who can use Mana Zone, taking control of the mana in his surrounding environment for him to use.
  • Summon Magic: He uses the relics on his necklace to summon four devils with animal masks to the living world.
  • Super-Scream: In Devil Union Mode: Gallus, he can unleash sound waves able to freeze Lilith and Naamah for a moment.
  • Super-Speed: Devil Union Mode: Felis gives him the characteristic of "agility", letting him move and evade attacks at great speed.
  • Super-Toughness: Devil Union: Equus gives him the characteristic of "toughness", giving Nacht the resilience to withstand Dante and even Lucifero's gravity.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: How Nacht feels when he meets the Black Bulls for the first time at the hideout. He chews them all out and sees Asta, who he likes for being a good person, as a fool.
  • Survival Mantra: In his fight against Lilith and Naamah despite their vast power, Nacht expresses his hate for unjust evil as his reason for continuing to live and keep fighting.
  • Survivor Guilt: Cast a Devil-Binding Ritual that his twin brother Morgen sacrificed himself to stop. Cradling his dead body, Nacht begged the gods to save him, thinking that he should have died instead and unable to forgive himself for it.
  • Swiss-Army Superpower: His magical attribute is shadow, and thanks to being the host of four mid-ranking devils he has a huge variety of different applications of his magic like crossing large distances through shadows, seeing through them, cutting off light, on top of his Unions with his devils that give him their characteristics.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: Is the sorcerer to Yami's sword. While both have Casting a Shadow powers, Yami uses it to enhance the destructive power of his sword, being primarily a close ranged Lightning Bruiser, whereas Nacht uses his Shadow Magic for mobility and ranged options, on top of several Devils for a variety of forms for different optinos in combat.
    T — Y
  • Taking You with Me: He resolves to do this to Lilith and Naamah, fusing with Plumede and Walgner to gain the power to lock them with him in a world of shadows to play an endless game of tag. Their magics are too powerful and they break out, and nearly kill Nacht until Asta comes and saves him.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Long black hair tied in a ponytail, 180 cm tall, and soft facial features.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: With his height, black hair, and derisive attitude towards others.
  • Tears of Joy: Cries small ones when Yami still acknowledges him as a friend and tells him to keep living and help others on behalf of Morgen after Nacht said he doesn't care if he dies and shouldn't be saved, helping Nacht get over his guilt for causing Morgen's death and taking him from Yami.
  • Tears of Remorse: Cried tears of grief and guilt while holding Morgen's dead body, blaming himself for his death and thinking to himself that he should have died instead as he asked the gods to save him.
  • Teen Genius: As a teenager, he showed a genius talent in Devil Magic that let him make contracts with four devils and control their power in a short amount of time.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He's only been to the Black Bulls' hideout once because he hates Yami. He hates the other Black Bulls for being destructive good-for-nothings, believing that their recent achievements don't erase their past failures. Nacht later acknowledges their accomplishments to Yami when they make up.
  • Temporal Theme Naming: Nacht means "night" in German. His twin brother Morgen's name is German for "morning".
  • That Man Is Dead: When Jack recalls that Nacht was a member of the Gray Deer, he states "that man is gone." It's later subverted — Jack was actually unknowingly referring to Nacht's twin brother Morgen, whose appearance he took on.
  • Theme Twin Naming: His name is German for "night", and his twin brother was named Morgen, German for "morning".
  • This Is Unforgivable!:
    • States so about the Dark Triad, calling them paragons of scum who hurt others for their own desires and unjust evil.
    • Regarding himself, thinking that he'll never forgive himself for causing his brother Morgen's death until he dies.
  • Thrill Seeker: In his younger years. He would rather pal around with Yami and get into trouble (though not too much trouble). He performed the Devil-Binding Ritual against his brother's wishes because "life really should be this much of a rush."
  • Took a Level in Idealism: By the end of the Spade Kingdom Raid arc, thanks to Yami's acknowledgement of him as his friend despite causing Morgen's death, seeing the Black Bulls, whom he hated out of Psychological Projection for himself being a no-good delinquent in the past, accomplish great things, and meeting Asta and witnessing the product of his training in him, Nacht gets out of his Martyr Without a Cause tendencies and projection of his self-hatred. He acknowledges that he hates people like the Black Bulls, but admits that he's like them himself and resolves to live on.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Zig-Zagged. While Nacht is by no means kind in the present, being a Brutally Honest person who's unforgiving of character flaws even in good people, Nacht was an unethical delinquent who dabbled in Forbidden Magic in the past. Him causing his brother Morgen's death led him to become a more responsible person dedicated to destroying evil and wanting the righteous to be rewarded, even if he can be a Jerkass at times.
  • Too Many Belts: His Devil Union Mode: Felis has many belts wrapped around his torso and arms.
  • Too Much Alike: Nacht's hatred of Yami is revealed to be because of their similarities as young, irresponsible delinquents when they were younger and friends, with Nacht coming to hate their formerly shared personality traits after he recklessly went through with the Devil-Binding Ritual that led to his brother's death. Nacht messes with Asta using his shadow arms when he points out his similarity to Yami, noting that Yami reminds himself of who he used to be.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: He became friends with Yami when they were fifteen because of their similar magics, with the two causing trouble together. Played for Drama when Nacht stated that he would "surpass [his] limits" when going through with the Devil-Binding Ritual to summon Lucifugus despite his brother Morgen's attempt to stop Nacht, which led to his tragic death.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: His decision to go through with the Devil-Binding Ritual of Lucifugus despite Morgen's insistence for him to stop, with Nacht stating that he would "surpass [his] limits", led to the deaths of his parents and other cultists when the devil attacked them as well as Morgen's, who sacrificed his life to destroy the relic used.
  • Undying Loyalty: Deeply admires Asta for his morality and heroism in spite of being toyed with by fate all his life, and is willing to sacrifice his life for Asta's if needed. He puts himself in between Asta and Lucifero to save him from the devil king, but luckily in turns get saved by Yami.
  • Walking Spoiler: His existence reveals that the Black Bulls have an inside man in the Spade Kingdom. When he formally shows himself, it turns out he's the squad's Vice Captain and a devil host.
  • We Used to Be Friends: As a teenager, he was friends with Yami, bonding with him over their similar magics and troublemaking. However, in the present-day Nacht hates Yami, which is heavily implied to be because his influence on Nacht led him to recklessly go through with the Devil-Binding Ritual that caused Morgen's death, on top of Yami's own negative personality traits which Nacht now disdains after his brother's death. Their friendship gets repaired when Yami tells him to keep living to help enough people for Morgen and acknowledges Nacht as still being his friend, helping Nacht get over his guilt for taking Morgen from Yami and Yami being a reminder for Nacht of his past self that he hates.
  • When He Smiles: Nacht flashes a genuine, happy smile with a little blush when Asta's choice to make an equal contract with Liebe turns out to be the right one, with Asta surprised at Nacht's reaction.
  • Winged Humanoid: Devil Union Mode: Gallus gives him black feathered wings.
  • Worth Living For: After causing his beloved twin Morgen's death, Nacht dedicated his life to destroying unjust evil with a disregard for his own life in his mission, willing to trap himself in an eternal game of tag with Lilith and Naamah if it meant stopping them. When he tells Asta that he doesn't matter and to go defeat the Dark Triad instead of saving him, Asta tells Nacht to live and witness his new strength thanks to him.
Nacht (seeing Morgen in Asta): Was I hoping a new morning would dawn?
  • You Are What You Hate: Despite being a Black Bull and the host of four devils, Nacht himself hates the squad and sees devils as unprincipled. It's later revealed that Nacht himself was once an irresponsible, unprincipled delinquent similar to the other Black Bulls, but came to hate those same traits and became a completely different person after he performed a Devil-Binding Ritual that led to his moral, just brother Morgen's death.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Asta's movement while wielding Yami's katana and statement that he'll "surpass [his] limits" reminds Nacht of Yami, which he gets very annoyed by because he hates Yami.
    • Watching Asta and Liebe interact reminds Nacht of his own past relationship with his twin brother. When Asta saves him from Lilith and Naamah and tells him to live and witness his new strength thanks to him, Nacht sees Morgen in Asta, realizing that he was hoping that a new morning would dawn.
    • Yami reminds Nacht of his old self, who was friends with Yami for their similarities, who he came to hate for causing Morgen's death.

Gimodelo's voiced by: Ray Chase (English)

Debut: Chapter 261 (Gimodelo), Chapter 263 (Slotos, Plumede, Walgner) (Manga), Episode 168 (Anime)

Four mid-ranking devils that serve as Nacht's familiars.

  • Animal Motifs: Each of them:
    • Gimodelo's is a dog. In its normal form Gimodelo has a canine form with a dog mask, its Devil Union Mode with Nacht is called Canis, and its characteristic is "pack".
    • Slotos' is a donkey. In its normal form Slotos has an equine form with a donkey mask, its Devil Union Mode with Nacht is called Equus, and its characteristic is "toughness".
    • Plumede's is a cat. In its normal form Plumede has a feline form with a cat mask, its Devil Union Mode with Nacht is called Felis, and its characteristic is "agility".
    • Walgner's is a rooster. In its normal form Walgner has an avian form with a rooster mask, its Devil Union Mode with Nacht is called Gallus, and its characteristic is "call".
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Despite being devils, they have cute appearances and serve Nacht through their contracts.
  • Fairy Tale Motif: They are based on the brother Grimm's The Bremen Town Musicians.
  • Familiar: They serve as Nacht's in a slave contract and have the small, animal-like appearances.
  • Fusion Dance: Through Devil Union Mode Nacht can merge with them, fully drawing out their power and added their characteristics to his Shadow Magic.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Despite being slaves to Nacht under contracts, they're fiercely loyal to him, with Plumede and Walgner willing to die for Nacht out of gratitude for him letting them live outside of the underworld.
  • Made a Slave: They were bound to Nacht under slave contacts through Devil-Binding Rituals years before the story.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The first parts of their names combined write out "Walpurgis", a.k.a. Walpurgisnacht, a festival associated with witchcraft and devil worship in German folklore.
    • In the German myth of Faust, "Wagner" is the name of Faust's assistant. Fitting name for one of Nacht Faust's loyal contracted devils.
  • Satellite Character: Justified. As devils bound to Nacht by a slave contract, they are completely subservient to him, therefore being with Nacht most of the time and appearing whenever he needs to use them.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: They have smaller chibi-like forms which are small enough to let them sit on Nacht's shoulder.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Nacht. Gimodelo worryingly tells Asta that Nacht is in danger, and Plumede and Walgner willingly fight alongside Nacht against Lilith and Naamah, telling him that they're grateful for the experiences they've had outside the underworld thanks to him. And when Gimodelo reunites with Nacht he's crying out of relief.
