* ''Theatre/CesareIlCreatoreCheHaDistrutto'' has teenagers from powerful families of all of Italy's city-states, plus further afield, from France, Spain, and the like. The title character is the leader of Spain's student organization, and his group constantly comes up against the French students. The Florentine students end up in the middle of their fights. Cesare was sent to the school to befriend the head of the Florentine association, Giovanni de'Medici, to keep their families allied.

* ''Fanfic/LeaveForMendeleiev'': After Marinette transfers to another class, one of the ways [[SpoiledBrat Chloé]] tries to regain access to her favorite target is by convincing [[MisplacedKindergartenTeacher Miss Bustier]] that she needs a tutor. Bustier then tries pressuring and guilt-tripping Marinette into taking up the role; while it's ultimately {{Averted|Trope}} by Marinette and others refusing to let her be forced into anything, it still speaks volumes to Bustier's naivete and [[EntitledBastard sense of entitlement]].

* ''Fanfic/OffToTheRaces'': While Fukuda and Suzuki are both espers, the only other thing they have in common is that they attended the same class in middle school. Their entire thirty-year friendship is built off of those two factors.

* In ''Literature/AreYouThereGodItsMeMargaret'', Margaret (after her class acts out out) is made to sit between to ClassClown Freddy Barnett and [[SlutShaming "bad girl"]] Laura Danker. She later has to do a group project with Laura, Philip Leroy, and Norman Fishbein, which means sitting together and talking; Margaret, who has been believing all the rumors about Laura Danker, is upset at this. She also is irritated that Philip doesn't help at all, her AbhorrentAdmirer Norman reads moving his lips, and [[SkewedPriorities the project is on Belgium, which she thinks is a boring country]]. She eventually takes her frustrations out on Laura while they're at the library, and [[WhatTheHellHero Laura calls her out on it.]]

* The usage of this in ''Franchise/MyHeroAcademia'' is occasionally {{Deconstruct|ionFic}}ed and called out as a [[FandomSpecificPlot/MyHeroAcademia Fandom-Specific Plotline]]. Specifically, several stories criticize Aizawa and other teachers forcing Izuku to work with his BarbaricBully Katsuki:
** In ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/40396812 Snap Before You Break]]'', Izuku outright ''refuses'' to partner with Katsuki for their Final Exam, which turns into an extensive TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Aizawa for being an ApatheticTeacher:

You should be able to figure out, Mr. #1 Underground Hero, that Bakugou was, is, and has always been my ''bully'', but you keep putting us together! What am I supposed to learn from teaming with Bakugou?\\
'''Aizawa:''' You're supposed to learn to work with people you don't like.\\
'''Izuku:''' I CAN WORK WITH HIM, YOU FUCKING LUNATIC! HE'S THE ONE WHO CAN'T WORK WITH ME! Now I ask again. What. Am. I. Supposed. To. Learn? How to take abuse and shut up because it's better for my abuser? How to smile and nod even when an asshole is burning me? ''(shows off a burn scar on his shoulder in the shape of a handprint)'' I fucking know very well how to do that!
** ''Fanfic/YesterdayUponTheStair'' turns the Final Exam into a [[MyGreatestFailure deep personal regret]] for both Aizawa and Toshinori when they realize that Katsuki [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beat the shit]] out of Izuku for the [[SarcasmMode high crime]] of trying to work with him.

A common problem in fiction is to get a group of people with differing backgrounds and contrasting personalities together. When writing characters who are children or teenagers, there's a simple solution: Have the school system force them together in some way. They could be placed in the same class or have to do a group project. Perhaps they could all have detention at the same time. Maybe they bond over their mutual hatred of the school system or enjoyment of school. This trope doesn't work all the time - for instance, children from rich families might be sent to private schools and won't have the same opportunity to interact with poorer kids. Kids who grow up in different neighborhoods may go to different schools. However, in general, schools can be used as a way to get characters from different backgrounds to form friendships. If these bonds last into adulthood, this becomes EveryoneWentToSchoolTogether.

* The trope is invoked in ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' Most of the killing games involve classes of students being forced to kill each other within a school setting. In ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony'', this is heavily exploited by the mastermind. None of the students knew each other prior to waking up in the school and all have drastically different personalities and backgrounds. Nonetheless, they form relationships with each other during their stay. After TheReveal, [[spoiler:it turns out the characters were originally fans who auditioned to be on the killing game reality show ''Danganronpa'', and had their personalities and memories fabricated to satisfy the audience]].

* Summer school forces the main cast of ''VisualNovel/DoubleHomework'' together. How could a traumatized world-class athlete, his ExtremeDoormat sister, his rightfully resentful ex-girlfriend, a convicted juvenile delinquent and closet fantasy nerd, a wannabe popular girl who [[spoiler:used to be a member of the convict’s gang]], and [[spoiler:an incognito princess]] with a love of gaming all become close friends? Put them in a weird summer school class together as [[spoiler:part of a sex experiment]].

* Possible in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemThreeHouses''. The player can assign two students to group projects, where they can gain [[RelationshipValues support points]]. Since the primary way of earning support points is making units fight alongside each other, group projects are useful for units who wouldn't normally fight together (such as a flier and an armored unit). However, [[DownplayedTrope characters who can't support each other won't gain any support points]].

* This happens in ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'', where Huntress teams are essentially formed at random and spend their entire school career together. [[LovableAlphaBitch Weiss]] never would have had anything to do with [[NaiveEverygirl Ruby]] or [[BrokenBird Blake]] if she had any choice. In fact, during their introductory trial run, Weiss actually tried to walk away from Ruby, but seeing that her only other option was [[NaiveNewcomer Jaune]], she reluctantly joined Ruby.

They ''met'' at the School of Friendship, but then it was closed indefinitely by the EEA. It was them hanging out outside of school and becoming friends on their own that convinced Twilight Sparkle to say ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem and reopen the school. In other words [[InvertedTrope Us Forced the School Together]].

While they naturally start off on rocky footing, through their various adventures they forge an unbreakable bond and consider each other as close as family.

* ''Literature/TheAnderssons'': In "Spränga gränser", Cecilia is the de facto leader of a group of five very different girls in school. Cecilia is a FieryRedhead and the one who comes up with all the new ideas. Bibbi is the [[EveryoneLovesBlondes pretty blonde]], who seems to know more about men than the others. Aina is a StrawNihilist, who likes to read Sartre and worry about a new war maybe starting. Gunilla is the shy and very religious PreachersKid. Helene is the one girl in the group with the most nondescript personality, but she got a leg damaged from polio and looks like Creator/AudreyHepburn. Also, Cecilia and Bibbi have working class parents and the other three have middle class parents.
