Some official sources do dance around it, but the actual details of his past are much more important.

Many of the lines from the old translation are extremely memorable and quotable, and for people who i. e. played the game many times during their childhood or later, things like King "getting his ears in a tangle", Misery's rants, the broken robot's emergency alarm or the "Did you know that the witch-woman Jenka had a brother? His name was Ballos, and he wielded powers far beyond those of mortals [...]" are a great part of the whole Cave Story feeling/nostalgia...
and to those who don't know Japanese, the Blind Idiot-ness of the translation isn't obvious, since it's not nearly as bad as, say, Final Fantasy Tactics or Wild Arms 2.

Yeah,I agree with Octagon8. The Nicalis translation is boring compared to the original, FREE version. Good example: "The Doctor can eat it!" from Nicalis, compared to "Doctor Dumb can go s*~! himself!" In the original. I DID censor the cuss, but that's because of my standards.

the necessary things to unlock the secret hidden cave confuse me, to the nth degree. I finished the whole curly thing, and got the booster 2.0, but got the normal cave, and the shack had no signs of changing before the final fight — and didnt open after. With This Herring - Ehhhh..."elite combat androids"? Somebody check that if I don't get to it first; I remember them being scout androids, though admittedly still military and possibly elite.

I heard that his name isn't Ballos. It's actually Boros. Ballos is actually a translation mistake. But, I'm not exactly sure whether this is true or false. The source seems pretty sure of itself. Even says that Pixel himself said that Ballos was wrong. Sadly, the source is Korean. I'll just put it up here just in case.
For that "Egg Corridor?[sic]?" thing, I think the second version of the Egg Corridor is actually called "Egg Corridor?" with the question mark. The mark was there so that the second question mark didn't look like a typo. I don't know that for sure, though, so I didn't want to change it back, and it's not a big deal at that.

Given the way a vocal portion of the fanbase prefers Aeon Genesis' Fan Translation over Nicalis' translation (made in collaboration with Pixel himself), can we call the Aeon Genesis version a Woolseyism? Or is it too early to tell?
