It's unclear if this article is describing "perky goths" as they appear in fiction, or if it's describing the subculture itself. If the former, the description is largely accurate, but the fact that it's focusing on fictional depictions should be stated more clearly.
However, if it's the latter, it's blatantly untrue to say that perky goths are almost always female, as many current and former goths will attest (ten years ago, I was considered a male example myself). If this is the case, the page should be re-written in a gender-neutral tone.
Hide / Show RepliesWhy would we be focusing on anything but fiction? It's the entire point of the site.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. The link to the "Perky Goth Manifesto" in the pagequote is broken, which is quite sad. It looked interesting.
GM of AGOG S4: Frontiers RP; Sub-GM of TABA, SOTR, & UUA RPs Hide / Show RepliesBrittany Taylor in the Daria episode "Ill". Jane Lane mentions about Brittany the next day to Daria.
- Jane: It was a rare opportunity, getting to hang out with Brittany in a grunge club, Although her hair did leak onto my shoes.Daria: You're sure that wasn't her brain?Jane: No, there was too much of it.
- There are a couple background Goths (who are inevitably Ensemble Dark Horse OC Stand Ins) who seem to happily congregate within and outside their subculture.
Just wondering, is there a trope for this similar thing? Is it an inversion/subversion of this? A character looks and acts Genki, but also has a fascination with dark stuff (ex. is a Nightmare Fetishist, Fluffy Tamer, Monster Fangirl, etc)
Can we please change the picture? Please? That girl doesn't even look goth; she's just dressed in black. Maybe the character's goth—never read it—but couldn't there maybe be a better picture?
Hide / Show RepliesYeah, seriously, this needs a better picture.
Taking steps to abandon this handle.Death from Sandman was the previous picture, wasn't she? If she does not look goth to you, then you know nothing of goth, son.
If this:
had been the picture, I would've thought it was perfect. But, if I recall correctly, in the previous image, she was just wearing a black tank top. Maybe this is due to my lack of goth-knowledge, but it really didn't strike me as very goth.
Oops, apparently, I should not have linked to an image. That didn't work... but, anyways, I found pictures on a google search in which she looked very goth. Just not the one on the trope page, from my uninformed perspective.
This page should be reserved only for actual goth characters that happen to be perky. I'm not implying there should be a "Perky X" for every subculture that happens to have the stereotype of being gloomy; however, there should be another trope, a more general, subculture-less, trope that could be more relevant to the characters. Instead of saying that every character that has something black on is goth. Just a few words from a fellow perky goth.
Comment on the Western Animation/My Little Pony example of Saga that didn't quite seem appropriate for the page itself: it's entirely in character for a self-identified Goth to believe and say that all Goths are posers. Uncommon, especially in the younger set, but in character.
I always thought he emo counterpart of Perky Goth was "cupcake emo". Scene girls are those who only dress emo while a cupcake has everything between but still act in a girly way (Some may say random or crazy heck some even lampshade themselves)
#nolivesmatter Hide / Show RepliesAbby from NCIS is a prime example of a perky Goth. She looks dangerous, but is in fact a ridiculously effervescent woman, who I seriously suspect has daddy issues....
Sym-BionicTitan: Kristin from Episode 12: The Ballad of Scary Mary, seems to fit right in. She's spooky but she doesn't bite.

I like this, being both dark and cute.
