Removed this from the Tiny Toons example:
- The short "The Anvil Chorus" is especially egregious. In it, Babs and Buster cause anvils to repeatedly fall from the sky on top of Plucky Duck...and that's it. That's the cartoon. It's so repetitive it's boring, so mean-spirited it makes you feel sorry for poor Plucky, and of course, it's not funny. Yet the No Fourth Wall gag is used to Anviliciously tell us that what we're watching is funny. In between anvils, Plucky gets berated by a Moral Guardian who claims to be the Chairperson of the Adults Against Funny Cartoons (she should've had no problem with this one). And at the end, it's revealed that the studio audience loved the cartoon, so Babs and Buster can subject Plucky to "The War of 1812 Overture" (basically the Anvil Chorus but with cannons instead).
No gag in the cartoon actually states that it's funny nor does anybody respond to it being funny. The Chairperson is against the Tiny Toons in general, and is targeting this cartoon due to it's violence. (Also Tiny Toons constantly attacked censors and media watchdogs) and the audience clapped, but never laughed.
PLEASE PLAEASE PLEASE! Can someone explain Guinan's original joke from the script? I can't stop thinking about it! I NEED TO KNOW THE PUNCHLINE!
Hide / Show RepliesIt reads like the closest thing to a punchline would be in the middle. Being "under a commitment to keep a secret about nothing" could be funny with the right setup. (I could go further speculating on how this came to be in the script, but maybe later.) On closer inspection, it may be supposed to not quite add up ("no soap radio") and leave Data as confused as the audience on this one.
Contrary to what the example entry insists, enough is not said about Borat to justify its presence on the page. Ordinarily I would clarify myself, but I haven't actually seen the film and don't intend to.
I think the point of 'fish dicks' was that it was such an obvious pun, yet one nobody had ever done before. the 'undiscovered' aspect of the joke was half the point. That, and the first couple times, it was extremely funny.
The laughing scene from FFX was not supposed to be funny. It was indicative of Yuna's emotional repression. Why can't people get that?
Hide / Show RepliesMethinks this is one of those situation were viewers are indeed morons.
This is listed on the Laughter Tropes page as "The characters find something unfunny funny.", but how can that be if this is a YMMV audience reaction-only thing?
