Roleplay Namespace Cleanup and Maintenance

Go To

Lately, we've been having some trouble with pages in the Roleplay/ namespace, and much debate over how to handle said pages. Problems include:

  • Auto-Erotic Troping
  • Major problems with example context
  • The difficulty cleaning up or verifying the content on said pages, often due to these roleplays being private or otherwise inaccessible

In this thread, we will discuss and clean-up these works so they conform to the rules of the wiki, and can be understood by any reader regardless of whether or not they take part in the roleplay.

Here are some useful sandboxes for our cleanup effort:

  • How to Clean a Roleplay - a sandbox guide to determining availability of, locating, and cleaning up pages to roleplays.
  • Roleplay Cleanup Thread is used for sorting pages after we examine them, whether they've been cleaned, cut, or shelved, and anything in-between.
  • Roleplay Cleanup Thread Indexing is used after a cleaned and verified page has been added to the first sandbox. We try to add these pages to our indexes, with the plan to create actual indexes later on.

[up]May help with that soon

Also, found Roleplay.Faith Testers because someone was cutting its YMMV page for being pointless.

Can't find any record of it anywhere, it appears to have been edited entirely by a single troper, and said troper only edited its page.

Can't prove auto-erotic troping, but it's very likely, and the page should be cut anyway for being unavailable as far as I can find.

The quotes page seems to imply it's a forum roleplay, but no further links or leads anywhere, and the editor left TV tropes in 2015, same year as they joined.

Edit: Backtracking, I did find a link buried in the examples (rather than in the description), seen here.

Appears that the game was deleted and even if it wasn't, it would have required a login to view.

I just stumbled across Long Long Ago, 21st Century while wick cleaning. If we move examples back from the character page, we can at least get it above the stub line. It's still pretty bad though. I'll try to fix it when I have time, but any help would be appreciated.

[up] I noticed there's a lot of ZCEs on the characters page, so I'll comment those out so we can see just what we have to work with.

Roleplay pages shouldn't really get YMMV pages, right? If so, should YMMV.We Are Our Avatars be cut?

People definitely shouldn't be adding YMMV for anything they participated in personally. Can't recall if we ever came to a conclusion on whether there's a sufficient level of separation for people to add something other players did in the same roleplay.

There's no policy but it has been discussed to death already.

Personally I don't think anyone in an RP can be truly unbiased, but I also don't see them as tropeworthy (they're rarely made for an audience) so...

TBF it's not like "normal" YMMV pages are edited by unbiased people in the first place.

I mean... it's a different type of bias when you are actively involved in creating the story. Yes, each player has a different character, but they're still directly involved in the action and I don't think it's possible for them to really look objectively at what they wrote.

I guess it's what this question was refering to? Or at least YMMV/ for them.

(I'm definitely mixing up ATT posts, though it's still worthy to consider.)

In any case, it seems like there's a large overlap between the page's editors and the RP's participants. However, due to the edit history's length, it seems like it'd be impossible to sift through the edit history and carefully purge all player-added entries while avoiding non-player-added ones.

Hey quick question, I was binge-reading this thread because...I was bored, and if someone finds a link to an rp that was previously Darthed for not having one, do we have license to just move that back into the normal Roleplay/ namespace? (granted, the page in question has a lot of commented-out ZCEs besides, but it's at least not teetering on the edge of stubhood)

i guess you can watch me shitpost i guess

So, I'm attempting to make Quests into a trope (because it desperately needs it; the word "quest" in the work descriptions gets potholed to Interactive Fiction, Play-by-Post Games or Gamebooks depending on the author), and going through your sandbox index for examples, I found a few that probably should be moved out of Roleplay:

  • Acid Soup: Has already been moved to Webcomic.
  • Alanna: The forum that hosted this has actually been taken down, and all that's left is a .zip containing a compilation. Maybe cut it as unpublished?
  • Archipelago Exodus: This is a website, and should probably be moved to that namespace.
  • Crystal Rave: Reccomend moving to Webcomic.
  • A Little Town Called Coxwette: Has already been moved to Webcomic.

As for Quests going forward, the line between Interactive Comic and Forum Quest can be pretty murky. The whole thing started as text descriptions with accompanying images, but posted on a forum (specifically 4chan's /tg/ board) rather than being published on the author's own website, and the two formats underwent divergent evolution from that shared seed. I'm not sure I like the idea of Quests being considered "not roleplay" just for having images (which seems to be what ended up happening last time), but saying that the difference is just a matter of production value seems kinda arbitrary? I honestly don't know how to handle this, and this thread seems like the right place to ask for opinions.

At the very least, the Quests that are currently namespaced under Fanfic should be moved to Roleplay. I'm a lot more certain of that. These are the ones on my launchpad at the moment, though there are probably a lot more scattered around the site:

An edit to Fanworks.Friday Night Funkin brought Errorverse to my attention.

The problem is, I can't seem to locate any actual links to any of the stories recapped. A Google search returns nothing except for the unrelated Undertale AU and the roleplay's creator announcing the creation of the page on August 29th of this year as if it were a full work, and their bios on social media do not actually mention Errorverse whatsoever.

The sole editor of all pages, High Speed Troper, may need to be investigated for Auto-Erotic Troping and/or meatpuppetry on the creators' behalf, as given the circumstances, it is physically impossible for regular users to have that much knowledge of a story that isn't even in writing.

E: PM'd them asking for a link to any recap or All There in the Manual material.

There's a lot of pages in the deprecated Let's Play namespace that are play-by-post and succession games of various games, usually Dwarf Fortress — I'd like to inquire if y'all would be willing to take them?

They're collected in a folder on Lets Play Wick Sorting right now.

I'm inclined to think forum quests aren't roleplays because they have a primary creator who is driving the story, and the audience — well, is an audience, as opposed to other players; their effect on the story is based mostly if not entirely on their interaction with the primary creator, and interactions they have with each other are filigree at most and often not part of the story at all. Also, any given individual suggester in a quest can drop out at any time, with no special accommodations needed to handle this.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.
