Go To

Typical Colors 2 is a Roblox game published by ROLVe. It was first released on December 3rd, 2015.

As the name of the developer implies, it is a port of Team Fortress 2 with a re-imagined cast, new balance passes for all nine classes, and numerous other improvements to the base game.

Set in a more modern time period compared to the original's caricature of The '60s, the world is once again caught in a power struggle between two NGO Superpowers, spurred by a Sibling Rivalry and supplied by a second party Playing Both Sides. Thomas Gerhardt uses mercenaries contracted to his family company Gerhardt and Radisson Natural (GRN) to protect his inherited fortunes from his brother Reginald and the mercenaries working for his rival company Reginald's Earthly Discoveries (RED), later organizing sieges to take back Reginald's territories. Meanwhile, the strongman Joseph Fitten uses his company Fitten Co. to give both companies their supplies to keep the Forever War going.

Unlike TF2, though, that's kinda where it ends, although the modernized setting also serves as a means to give both the background story and the game's aesthetic more freedom than the original.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Context Change: The line "This here is just gonna keep happening and happening" is changed from a generic domination line for Engineer to an Annihilator domination line for Marksman (Sniper.)
  • Adaptational Mundanity:
    • There is no indication Joseph Fitten has the literal Testosterone Poisoning of Saxton Hale, and Fittanium is very explicitly chemical waste, nothing special enough to prop up an entire nation unlike Australium.
    • Because Jarate is just lemon juice in this universe, the extra damage can simply be justified by filling the victim's wounds with acid instead of the urine literally sapping their will to live.
    • Due to the modern setting, the Doctor's most basic Medigun is an Expy of the Kralle, a popular fanmade Medigun that was meant to be a high-tech model distinct from the original in function. However, it takes the role of stock in this game as previously mentioned.
    • The Vagineer is now the Mad Mechanic. Rather than a legitimate freak of nature, he seems to be a version of Kenneth that finally got tired of everyone else's bullshit.
  • Adaptational Nationality:
    • The Flanker (Scout) is a New Yorker instead of a Bostonian.
    • The Annihilator (Demoman) is Irish instead of Scottish, and is white.
    • The Brute (Heavy) is a midwestern American instead of a Russian.
    • The Mechanic (Engineer) is strongly implied to not be Texan, and is instead from somewhere in the midwestern US.
    • The Doctor (Medic) is British instead of German.
    • The Marksman (Sniper) is from Mississippi instead of Australia (or rather, the remains of New Zealand) and is black.
    • The Agent (Spy) is Italian instead of French and is also a woman.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: It's implied the Arsonist is a defective AI inhabiting the Pyro-like shell he uses, as the Trooper and Annihilator both call him a "reject" if dominated by them. The Trooper and Doctor also consider him to be unrepentantly evil, even by the mercs' standards if dominated by them, whereas their domination lines for all other classes simply call them pathetic or inadequate.
Trooper: You like fire? Let me send you to Hell!
Doctor: There is a very, very special place in Hell for you, my friend.
  • Ambiguous Robots: The joke with the Arsonist's identity is changed from the Pyro's Ambiguous Gender to the possibility of being a robot. Although the "ambiguous" part has been subject to continuous decay, with the other classes constantly referring to his mechanical nature if dominated and his head spinning unnaturally in several animations.
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • Damage resistance is now shown on your screen as an exact value, and adjusts your HP values to match while they're active. For example, a Trooper with 150 HP under the effect of the Battalion's Backup's 35% damage reduction will be said to have around 200 HP instead.
    • Because close-range shots deal less damage as a Marksman, scoping in will show the exact distance to your target in studs.
  • Anti Poop-Socking:
    • CTF maps actually have a timer to prevent the map from going into an infinite stalemate if the teams are too balanced, unlike the original game. They are allowed to go into overtime if one or both teams are missing the intelligence, but only up to the default limit of 45 seconds.
    • CP maps no longer extend their timer upon capture unless they are Attack/Defend maps.
  • The Artifact: Maps lifted from TF2 and its community are essentially this due to their unchanged aesthetic. Though meant to fit The '60s and how people from that time perceived certain things, TC2 is a Modern AU Fic set close to the present day, causing the maps to appear dated in comparison.
  • Balance Buff: Relative to TF2:
    • The Flanker's stock bat deals critical damage to anyone below 25% of their health, making the use of it slightly more appealing. The rest of his melees have additional changes to balance out the lack of this function.
    • The Boston Basher has 20% extra base damage.
    • The Sandman's baseball deals triple its base damage.
    • The Grill Scout (Sun-on-a-Stick) only mini-crits burning players and has 60% reduced swing speed, but will ignite targets on its own and has no damage penalty. It can also clear teammate debuffs.
    • All classes now have the ability to Goomba Stomp enemies regardless of loadout choice. To compensate, the Manntreads instead buffs reload speed and grants the Trooper complete invulnerability to airblast.
    • The Arsonist's stock melee clears debuffs on teammates.
    • All grenade launchers inherit the Loch-n-Load's increased velocity, and the Loch-n-Load itself, renamed to the Iron Force, deals even more damage against the Mechanic's buildings.
    • The Classic no longer requires a full charge to headshot.
    • The Model IV (Machina) can penetrate players without a full charge.
    • The Huntsman's arrows can't be reflected.
    • Cloaking and using disguises gives the Agent (Spy) damage resistance that stacks.
    • All knives no longer require backstabs to trigger their on-kill effects.
    • There is an additional radius around players where the Agent can inflict a weaker backstab that counts as a mini-crit.
    • Your Eternal Reward also buffs the Agent so that her choice of disguise also gives separate benefits to herself: offensive classes cause her to do extra damage (most importantly enabling the Ambassador to one-tap 125-HP classes), defensive classes give her even more damage resistance, and support classes cause her to regenerate health.
    • While using the Conniver's Kunai, you won't lose overheal as long as you remain invisible.
    • On Payload maps, overtime is no longer fixed to five seconds after someone stops pushing the cart. Instead, the timer scales based on capture progress, and rewinds when a teammate pushes the cart:
      • If first has not been captured, the timer is set to the cart's own. For example, if the cart has ten seconds left on its timer before reversing when overtime begins, then overtime will also start with ten seconds.
      • If first has been captured, overtime starts at 15 seconds regardless of the cart's timer.
      • If second has been captured, overtime starts at 30 seconds.
      • If third has been captured, overtime starts at 45 seconds.
    • Capture progress on control points can be reversed even when the point is already occupied by a team.
  • Boring, but Practical: The Ultimatum offers no net change to DPS for an Annihilator compared to stock and even deals less damage on the first direct hit. However, the Lemonade explosions it causes can be a massive boon to the DPS of your teammates if you're trying to drill a fortified position with them.
  • Bowdlerise: Downplayed; while the game does tone down some aspects of the original to comply with Roblox standards, the characters' voicelines make it clear it only does the bare minimum required to do so; if vanilla TF2 is rated M by the ESRB, then TC2 would be rated T. Lemonade plays this straight, however, as it's the counterpart to Jarate but is literal lemon juice instead of urine.
  • Character Exaggeration: The Annihilator is an actual knight, taking the Demoman's use of the Eyelander and the Demoknight loadout to its logical conclusion.
  • Company Cross References: The equivalent achievement to "Geneva Contravention" (kill three enemies during humiliation) is "Geneva Suggestion." This references the "Warcrimes" voicepack from ROLVe's Original Generation game Arsenal, which sometimes starts the round saying "The Geneva Convention? More like a suggestion!"
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
  • Easter Egg:
    • There's an extremely rare chance that certain voice commands will elicit different lines from the nine classes than their usual selections, including:
    • There is a 10% chance upon changing servers to produce a Jump Scare, flashing an image of the Brute's mug on Yellowvalley accompanied by a Vine boom.
    • Under unknown conditions, bots can join a server. If they select the Annihilator class, they will have access to a Sentry Buster tool that changes their appearance, AI, and stats to match actual TF2 Sentry Busters. And yes, they will detonate once they reach an enemy nest, and it will hurt.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar:
    • It's extremely obvious that being built and programmed in Roblox is the only reason many of the classes don't curse like sailors. Even still, they use "damn" and "hell" very often, and both Annihilator and Marksman often use Jesus Christ's name in vain. Flanker can also straight-up be made to yell "Badass!" on command with his "Positive" voicelines.
    • The Doctor may call other Doctors he dominates "pikey tossers." In America, where Roblox is based out of, these are Inherently Funny Words, but in the Doctor's native Britain, it's far more vulgar. While "tosser" is another word for "wanker," "pikey" as an adjective accuses whoever it describes of being a Lower-Class Lout or associating with them. In other words, because the Doctor finds enemy Doctors inferior, he assumes they must be or work with the impoverished.
  • Hilarious Outtakes: Seven whole minutes of the Brute's voice actor, Charles Lobaugh, reading a wide variety of memes, references, and exceptionally-vulgar lines. Some of them were implemented into the game as rare Easter Eggs replacing other lines.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: All nine classes are designed to vaguely resemble their current voice actors.
  • Modern AU Fic: It's basically the beginning of the original Team Fortress storyline time-shifted a few decades into the future. The maps are still the same because of The Artifact, but everyone and their gear is clearly from a more modern time.
  • Nerf: Relative to TF2:
    • The Market Gardener deals 25% less damage, imparts a 50% knockback vulnerability, and makes the Trooper take 25% more damage. He will also glow brightly whenever he is able to crit with the weapon.
    • The Equalizer swings 15% slower and hits yourself if it misses.
    • The Axtinguisher now hits yourself if it misses. To compensate, the Deathblow shotgun was implemented as an alternative to the "puff n' sting" strategy and is currently marketed as a backup weapon to the Axtinguisher/Degreaser combo.
    • The Black Death (Eyelander) also has a 10% movespeed penalty.
    • The Spartan Savior (Persian Persuader) reduces its benefits to charge time and increases charge cooldown if boots are equipped.
    • Shields do not grant damage boosts when charging, except for the Gladiator's Guard which negates all turn speed bonuses from a typical Demoknight loadout.
    • The Wrangler's shield is purely cosmetic and serves only to telegraph a Mechanic's use of the item.
    • Snipers deal 20% less damage under 40 studs, making quickscopes much less useful against weaker classes when cornered. To compensate, scoping in now shows an accurate readout of your current distance to a target.
    • Conversely, snipers also experience 20% damage falloff over a certain threshold. Critical hits won't suppress this.
    • The Model IV's damage bonus only applies to buildings and charges more slowly.
    • The Ambassador can only headshot on the first bullet in the magazine.
    • Anything that causes a Lemonade (Jarate) explosion will also coat the user if they're standing too close and aren't extinguishing a teammate.
    • The Dead Ringer doesn't have a grace period where taking damage won't short out the cloak or trigger visible debuffs.
  • No Fair Cheating:
    • Since Roblox's physics engine can permit it at times, escaping GRN's spawn during setup on Payload or Attack/Defend maps will blow the player up.
    • Arena rules for joining teams (stragglers are locked out of the round a set period after it begins if they haven't picked a team) are in effect for all maps to prevent manipulation.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: Because of the reduced server sizes and class limits, ROLVe has a hardline stance on friendlies and Griefers and stresses that both must be votekicked on sight since they eat up valuable space and class slots for nothing.
  • Shared Universe: With ROLVe's Original Generation game Arsenal, most prominently in the Saint Patrick's Day 2022 event where Roger Adams reprises his role as Annihilator for Bombfest's announcer.
  • Support Party Member: The Ultimatum is designed to allow the Annihilator to become this with minimal impact to his DPS, something lifted from the original concept for vanilla TF2. In exchange for 35% less base damage, all direct hits coat anyone caught in the explosion with Lemonade. If coordinated properly, this allows the rest of his teammates to take advantage of the damage buff and clean house easily.
  • Theme Music Power-Up: If a Payload match goes into overtime, the game begins blasting a remix of one of the main themes, with different orchestration for each team. RED gets a modern synth-heavy piece, while GRN gets a version with traditional instruments.
  • You Are Fat: The domination lines for dominating a Brute play this up so much more than in the original TF2. Below is one line from every class that does this except for the Brute himself and the Agent (who does not indulge in such humor.)
Flanker: Hey fatty cakes, get a new hobby!
Trooper: If I didn't kill you, heart failure would!
Arsonist: You are fat, and also dominated.
Annihilator: Y'know, being big makes this real easy for me!
Mechanic: How can that bike even hold you up, tubby?
Doctor: Hmph. I'm surprised cardiac arrest hasn't killed you first.
Marksman: Ate them bullets faster than you ate that burger!
