YMMV / What It's Like Being Alone

  • Base-Breaking Character: Princess Lucy is either incredibly hilarious or incredibly annoying depending on who you ask. Even critics of the day expressed the opinion that the character was amusing but could potentially become tiresome as the show went on.
  • Critical Dissonance: Although critics considered the series unique and interesting, general viewers were more split on the show. A now-deleted excerpt from its Wikipedia page describes it well:
"The public reception has been decidedly mixed, with IMDb user reviews split more or less down the middle between contempt and adoration. This might not have been entirely unexpected, as the series itself relies heavily on absurdity and gothic surrealism, with an uneasy balance struck between the seemingly cartoonish animation and the distinctly adult-yet-immature brand of black humor, which nevertheless fails even to conform to typical standards of that style. This has led many viewers to question whether the show was either very poorly written, or very well written, with the answers depending largely on whether they themselves found it funny."
  • Cult Classic: Despite the show's abovementioned divisive reception, its dark humor and unusual presentation has earned it a small following with Canadian fans, to the point where the show has a very well-written and well-researched Wikipedia article that the site actually branded as a "Good" article - which is quite an achievement for an obscure short-lived Canadian cartoon.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Aldous, probably due to being a Goth. She seems to get the most fanart of the show's characters.
  • Quirky Work: Even critics of the show's time on the air deemed it surreal, and that's saying something. There really hasn't been anything quite like this show on CBC before or since.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Many of the negative reviews of the show accuse it of being little more than an attempt to ape the style of Tim Burton, due to its Black Comedy elements and stop-motion animation.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: One of the reasons the show never really caught on. The nonstop misery the characters go through put many viewers off.
