YMMV / Transformers: Beast Wars (2021)

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Nyx is greatly loved by the fandom. Skold... is slowly gaining popularity.
  • Fridge Logic: In this adaptation, the Maximals and Predacons already had their names before getting their Beast Modes, mostly since it was an unnecessary change and it makes their random beast modes a Contrived Coincidence. And it’s very much still random as in the second issue Ratrap is shown to not be happy with the beast mode he got stuck with.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "Power Surge", an episode of the original Beast Wars series, Rattrap tells Optimus "If I wanted to fly I'd have become a bat, not a rat.". In this continuity Rattrap is now working alongside a Maximal who turns into a bat.
    • Said bat was based off of the original toy release for Optimus, back when the character was going to be Prime instead of Primal.
  • Moral Event Horizon: See here.
  • More Popular Replacement: Nyx is easily one for Nightscream from Beast Machines, being a bat based, youthful Maximal added to a classic four-man band who, unlike Nightscream, isn't a sulky Emo Teen.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Whereas in the first show he at least lasted a full season and got fleshed out enough before falling into lava, Terrorsaur dies in this series just barely after ten issues at the hands of Skold. Any potential for IDW Terrorsaur to distinguish himself from his TV counterpart as his own unique incarnation and even enact future schemes to overthrow Megatron are completely thrown out the window. After he is revived as Tarantulas' mindless, undead slave, the potential possibility of the other Predacons discovering Skold killed him are never touched upon, and Skold only briefly faces him.
    • Razorbeast has made popular appearances in past Beast Wars fiction and has a wonderful friendship with Skold, but is killed off almost immediately after being introduced to the series to motivate Skold to kill Terrorsaur.
    • The Children of the Vok contain several fan-favorites like Tigatron, along with more obscure characters like Saberback, but since they're introduced near the end of the comic, most of them in the final issue, they get barely any focus. It's saying how unimportant and interchangeable most of them are that two of them die in issue 15 but show up in the final issue alongside the rest with no explanation!
    • Powerhug is introduced in the Annual with no explanation for where he came from, and despite not being killed at the end of the issue, he never appears again, not even as a Back for the Finale deal.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Many fans were disappointed that Dinobot defected from the Predacons only three issues in, feeling that having him remain with the bad guys for a bit longer could have led to some interesting stories. They were also confused by Dinobot abandoning the Predacons out of disgust for their immorality since it made no sense for him to have agreed to join up with Megatron if they have such a wide difference in ideology. The latter at least gets an explanation in issue 5: Dinobot and Megatron both agreed that the Maximals were shameful for hiding the contents of the Golden Disk, and Megatron tempted Dinobot with promises of revealing the truth once they had it. It's everything ELSE about the Predacons that disgusted him.
  • Unexpected Character: The comic mostly takes after the original cartoon but issue 9 brings in fan favorite Razorbeast, a character that was made popular in the 2006 Beast Wars comic.
