- Breather Episode: Lighter than the majority of Satoshi Kon's works, which range from Drama to Psychological Horror and usually provide a more cynical and often nightmarish depiction of mankind and Japanese society. This one is more of a comedy that rests firmly on the idealistic end of the sliding scale, and was also released between Millennium Actress and Paranoia Agent, the former being a Tear Jerker and the latter very dark and intense.
- Moral Event Horizon: The nameless hoodlums crossed it when they gravely beat and injured a homeless old man For the Evulz.
- Tear Jerker: A lot. Miyuki's dream sequence may count. "Where's my angel? What have you done with Angel?"
- Values Resonance: Hana, a homeless transgender woman, is depicted as a person in this film, rather than a joke character (though her identity is still the butt of jokes occasionally). Not too shabby for something from 2003.
- The Woobie: The three main characters, with their sad backstories and pitiful living conditions, certainly qualify, as does the movie's Anti-Villain, Sachiko.
