- Creator's Favorite: Kon never stated which of his films was his favorite but Tokyo Godfathers was the one he had the most fun working on.
- Creator's Oddball: You wouldn't think that legendary filmmaker Satoshi Kon would make a magical-realist tragicomedy set during Christmas time but here we are. The film is more light-hearted, comedic, and grounded than Kon's more serious and dreamlike works. This trope is somewhat subverted as it does still contain his Signature Style with his insight on the human mind, his atmospheric touch, and it does still blend reality with surreality just in a different way.
- He Also Did: The film's composer, Keiichi Suzuki, is also the founder of the band Moonriders and is best known for working with Nintendo and Shigesato Itoi for his compositions on EarthBound Beginnings and its better known sequel.
- Late Export for You: It took seventeen years after the film's original release to get an official, widely-released English dub.
- Playing Against Type: In the Latin American spanish dub, campy transwoman Hana is voiced by Gerardo Reyero, who's better known for playing either baritone heroes or villains with deep voices like Frieza.
- Promoted Fanboy: Crispin Freeman has said that he absolutely loves this movie and that if it were to ever be dubbed into English, he wishes he could play Hana. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't cast as her in GKIDS's upcoming new dub, but he has been cast as Miyuki's father, so he at least gets to be in the movie.
- Queer Character, Queer Actor:
- Hana's GKIDS English dub actor, Shakina Nayfack, is trans like her.
- Kate Bornstein, who is gender non-conforming, voices "Mother" in the GKIDS dub as well.
- Trans Character, Cis Actor: Hana, a trans woman, is voiced in both the original Japanesenote and Latin American Spanish dubs by cisgender men.
- What Could Have Been: Had she still been alive, Maddie Blaustein would likely have been cast as Hana for the GKIDS dub. She was still Michael Sinterniklaas's admittedly high bar when they were trying to find Hana's voice.
