- Hype Backlash: The film earned a fair number of detractors who found the focus on Stephen Hawking's romantic life (versus his scientific achievements) to be a bit saccharine and too heavy-handed in its attempts to showcase how inspirational a figure Hawking was. Those disliking the film were further exacerbated when Redmayne won an Oscar that they thought deserved to go to Michael Keaton for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), sparking a brief rivalry between fans of each film.
