YMMV / The Farside Trilogy

  • Angst? What Angst?: When Varia's first husband dies, she spends all of one month mourning before confessing her love to Curtis. She gets kidnapped from home and the husband she's so in love with, finds out the wonderful woman she looked up to all her youth is a cold calculating person grooming her to be just as cold and calculating, spends months raped nightly, and then gets captured TWICE during her escape. When a new friend idly wonders what it's like to be raped, Varia sheds a tear and tells her she doesn't want to know. And that is that. It's justified in that Sisters are bred to be docile and follow the will of their Dynast, and Varia's leadership test showed she had a low aggression level. When she makes it to her final destination, the Justification is turned up to eleven with Aduail and Mariil's therapy sessions, where Varia loses her will to dwell on the past, and learns to live in the moment. Towards the end of the last book, she kills her husband to spare him from torture, throws up, then spends the rest of the book either seeking escape from the enemy stronghold, or getting back together with her beloved Curtis, as if nothing had happened.
  • One True Pairing: Curtis and Varia. It's even stated outright in the third book. Twice. And one of those times was not by someone actually involved in said OTP, it was said by a supernatural being who'd spent time beyond the veil of death and chose to come back to the living world to help others.
  • Squick: Curt Macurdy marries his aunt. Sure, she's his aunt by marriage, but at least one reviewer twigged on that and was still grossed out a bit.
