• Angst? What Angst?: Tokiyuki has a LOT of issues you'd think would cause a lot of stress for a pre-teen — most of his family is dead, people are out of his head, and later on, he's expected to lead a rebellion against not only a powerful but popular military leader — but he never lets all of this gets to him, and tries to focus on living a day at a time.

• Designated Villain: The manga doesn't gloss over the fact that there are many brave and honorable men who are only considered "villains" just because they happen to be against Tokiyuki and his companions.
