YMMV / The Castles of Doctor Creep

Go To

  • Awesome Music: If you let the game idle at the title screen, it'll play music after a while. This game's version of Brahms's "Hungarian Dance No. 5", the first one in the game's playlist, is one of the best, and the most familiar to fans of the game.
  • Best Level Ever: Carpathia is one of the most tightly-designed of the difficult castles. There's much less repetition than some of the other difficult castles, the game subtly nudges you onto the right path, and you can see your progress as you continue on through the castle. Other castles that don't require too much repetition even if they are long and/or difficult, such as Callanwolde and Lovecraft, may also qualify.
  • Breather Level: If you take the levels in the listed order, Freedonia is a big breather after the marathon that Alternation was, and a much easier romp than the following castle, Carpathia.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Usually when a player escapes a castle, the player's character will run for some distance, stop at a certain point to wave at the camera, then leave. Occasionally the character doesn't stop and keeps going off the screen...then comes back, does the wave, and then leaves.
    • One particular Frankenstein trap in Callanwolde, which involves you exploiting their Artificial Stupidity by having them endlessly running against moving sidewalks.
  • Good Bad Bugs: Several.
    • Doublecross has two doors that don't lead to the correct place, both of which considerably shorten the levelnote :
      • Player 2's starting door leads to the lower path in the next room, via a door that normally goes to a completely different room.
      • A door in the upper right room, if entered (actually reentered, since it's a door you just came through), moves the character in front of the exit door in the upper left room. If you are fast enough, the Frankenstein monster won't come out, and you don't have to run the legit path at all!
    • The original game was subject to slowdown in some circumstances due to hardware limitations, which in some cases worked to the player's advantage. The Steam port lacks this slowdown, but the developers in charge of the port attempted to compensate by altering the timing of the existing mechanics to match the expected slowdown.
  • Nintendo Hard: Some of the later castles (especially Rittenhouse and Lovecraft) are absolutely brutal in difficulty.
  • That One Level:
    • Baskerville wins the award for "most hated" level. While it's not the hardest castle, the ridiculous amount of Fake Longevity combined with the difficulty of some of the puzzles tends to wear out players. The fact that you have to do some of these difficult puzzles many times in single-player mode just to escape doesn't help, and also not helping is a particularly nasty trap late in the second half of the castle. Romania is little better in this regard...except that a clever player can get through the exit room in a way that renders four of the upper rooms, and indeed several of the early rooms, meaningless. And Doublecross also is arduous if you run it the intended way (but see Good Bad Bugs above).
    • Rittenhouse and Lovecraft are more standard cases of the trope, with very difficult puzzles and easy ways to get killed.
