YMMV / Superior Spider-Man (2018)

Go To

  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Otto manages to defeat, with a combination of Heroic Willpower and and smart planning, Terrax The Tamer, one of the heralds of Galactus.
    • Doctor Octopus' final victory over Spider-Osborn, in which Otto uses all of his arms including his multiple backup ones, to rescue James after Osborn drops him out of the window, incapacitates Spiders-Man, and crushes all the bones in Spider-Osborn's body before tossing him back into his own dimension.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Anna Maria's realization that Otto Octavius is the only hero around to save San Francisco from a rampaging cosmic terror in #2, after being reminded that the Avengers are off-world at the moment:
Anna Maria: Okay, call Peter Parker. Even if he can’t get here in time, he knows who can. Captain Marvel. The X-Men. Hell, even Deadpool
Living Brain: I am unable to reach Mr. Parker or any of the enhanced first responders.
Anna Maria: Oh God. Please don't tell me that the only thing standing between San Francisco and agonizing death is Otto freakin' Octavius?
    • Everything about Otto as Eliot Tolliver's date in #5
      • Since Anna Maria told him to be honest in his relationships, and Ock has no idea how to people, he tells her that he is secretly Otto Octavius in the middle of their first date. It goes about as well as you'd think.
      • After his date gets possessed by a demon forcing him to fight and restrain her.
Superior Spider-Man: I am beginning to reconsider dating.
      • Anna Maria tried advising against the date in the previous issue, citing Otto's inexperience and the fact that he's still a supervillain on the top-ten most wanted list. Otto insists he's in the top five, and adds that the Red Skull has an unfair advantage by virtue of being an actual Nazi.
    • San Francisco is being invaded by frost giants. Seeing as Superior Spider-Man cannot make contact with any legitimate heroes, he has chosen the West Coast Avengers to aid him (his words). So he proposes a plan to take the fight to the giants' realm, and defeat them there.
Gwenpool: Whoa. Hold on. That's not how this works. It's a crossover event. And we're an ancillary tie-in. We do our little part of the story, score a small victory and then go back to our regular narratives.
Superior Spider-Man: This woman is quite mad.
Fuse: Ignore her. She thinks this world is fictional and she's the only "real" person here.
Gwenpool: Trust me. This is how you want it. The other option is we die tragically to show how high the stakes are. But I don't think we have anything to worry about. That usually happens to newer characters the writers didn't grow up with, or legacy characters whose freshness has worn off.
Superior Spider-Man: At the risk of encouraging your insanity, what, pray tell, is a "legacy character"?
Gwenpool: You know. Ones who were created as hipper, edgier versions of previously existing characters, but just end up making fans want the originals back. So, uh... maybe we should go hide!
    • Issue #9 and the return of Z-list nobody villain Turner D. Century, and his crusade to return the world to the ways of the 19th Century. Otto has zero patience for him, pointing out that he's barely old enough to recall the Twentieth Century.
      • Then Peter shows up to check on how Otto's doing, leading to this gem.
Spider-Man: Hey, Turner D. Century! Last time I saw you, you were getting beaten up by a senior citizen! I thought you were dead or something.
Turner D. Century: I was resurrected by the Dread Dormammu to cleanse the world of hipsters-
Spider-Man: (thwips his mouth shut) Yeah, just realized I don't care.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In issue #4 of the Superior Spider-Man relaunch, Otto is forced to help in rescue efforts after a particular large battle in San Francisco. During the search, they find a boy who's mother was killed and Otto sits the boy down and comforts him on his loss. He notes that he lost his parents and knows the pain of the loss, and this inspires him to willingly remain helping others around the city.
    • Otto gets hit with a Heroic BSoD after War of the Realms that hits him a lot harder than he lets on. Despite all his posturing and arrogance, he confides in Peter that he could and should have been able to help more. Peter gives him encouragement and Otto breaks down after he leaves, and begins opening up to Emma more easily about his problems.
Peter: Okay. No more advice from me. I will grant you. I'm not a therapist. I'm barely a motivational poster of a cat. And you're older than me. You have more life experience. But I have been doing this longer. I mean, from the good guy side of things. And there's one thing I can tell you for sure. The way you feel right now...? ...means you're doing it right. So give yourself a break, Otto. You just might have a future in this.
      • Peter showed up to check on Otto because Anna called, concerned about Otto's well-being.
  • Tear Jerker
    • The War of the Realms ended up hitting Otto a lot harder than he lets on and he ends up suffering a Heroic BSoD after Spidey drops in on him.
    • The series basically ends with Otto sacrificing his heroism and everything he learned from Peter to do the right thing one last time, preserving his foe's secrets but leaving it completely open if he will go back to being a villain or try and be a different kind of hero again.
