YMMV / Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay

Go To

  • Broken Base: Harley's lack of relevance to the plot. Although some feel that she got way too much focus in previous Suicide Squad adaptations and are happy that this film finally gives her teammates the opportunity to shine, others are disappointed because she is a very popular character that goes underutilized.
  • Complete Monster: See here.
  • Contested Sequel: Fans are split on whether this film is a massive improvement over previous entries in the DC Animated Movie Universe or one of the franchise's weakest efforts. Defenders will point out that the Deadshot and Bronze Tiger arcs offered some great dynamics between both characters; the action scenes are much more intense thanks to the film's R-rating; and the reveal of Zoom's secret is one of the most shocking twists in any DC film period. Critics will argue that the large cast prevented fan favourites like Harley Quinn and Dr. Fate from having adequate screen time; the excessive Fanservice and crude humour detract from the film's darker tone; and the plot being essentially "Find the MacGuffin" made for a less compelling narrative.
  • Fanfic Fuel: What happened to the old Doctor Fates (if there were any) and the identity of the new one.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Scandal Savage makes an offhand comment about her father, "He likes Wonder Woman." In the 2020 comic DCeased: The Unkillables, Wonder Woman, now turned into a savage zombie, kills Vandal Savage by tearing him in half.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Deadshot is an expert marksman, assassin, and de facto leader of the Suicide Squad. Amanda Waller's ruthlessly competent hatchet man, Deadshot mows down any enemies in his way and expertly manages the deranged villains of Task Force X to carry out her will in exchange for a lighter prison sentence. Opening the movie pretending to step down as leader, all as part of a scheme to lure out traitors on the Squad for Waller to execute, Deadshot is later assigned to find for her a magical "Get Out of Hell Free" card, and leverages Waller's personal desire for the card to shave off the remaining years from his sentence. Even with the interference of Vandal Savage and Professor Zoom, Deadshot manages to keep his team ahead of them, threatening to use the card for himself when Savage seems poised to mow them all down. Later managing to kill Zoom with the help of a fatally wounded Bronze Tiger, Deadshot honors his fallen comrade by discreetly allowing him to use the card before handing it off to an oblivious Waller, securing his freedom to make amends with his daughter.
  • Nausea Fuel: The uncensored execution of Reverse Flash by Flashpoint Batman. The bullet is shown piercing his skull up close and in slow motion, as blood and chunks of his brain fly directly at the screen.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Jewelee being reduced to a sobbing, blubbering mess when Waller activates her explosive. The previous scene may have established that she was a backstabbing and cold-blooded murderer, but it's still brutal to watch.
    • Deadshot attempting to reach out to his daughter, which leads to a brutal fight with Bronze Tiger, during which the latter reveals his past.
    • Bronze Tiger, the only truly sympathetic member of the Squad, suffers crippling injuries from an explosion and is further tortured by Zoom, who slashes him with a small knife multiple times. He ultimately succumbs to his wounds, though thankfully Deadshot is merciful enough to give him the card so he can find peace in death.
  • Too Cool to Live:
    • Bronze Tiger is a Badass Normal whose expertise in martial arts make him a formidable warrior capable of going toe-to-toe with the likes of Deadshot and Zoom. However, he's caught in a bomb explosion before the final act, leaving him crippled with injuries before the final battle. He ultimately dies in a Heroic Sacrifice, confronting Zoom and being tortured by the villain to stall for time until Floyd can catch up to them.
    • Killer Frost's cryokinesis makes her the most powerful member of the Squad, but she leaves the team halfway through the film to join Zoom. She's ultimately killed when her former teammate Copperhead pins her down, after which the explosive within his head is detonated, incinerating them both.
    • This movie's incarnation of Copperhead, having an awesome voice, a cool visual design, being a badass in every fight he was in and surviving far longer than anyone expected. He bites it when Waller uses him to kill Killer Frost as mentioned above.
