YMMV / Starter Squad

• Awesome Music: Geodude's heavy metal theme song as he's beating the tar out of Charmander, appropriately titled ROCK SMASHER.
• Base-Breaking Character: All three main characters:
  • While some fans think Charmander is hilarious and essential to the show, others find his actions and personality to be too despicable to laugh at.
  • Squirtle is either a respectable voice of reason or a one-note character whose only purpose is to keep telling Charmander to stop being... well, Charmander.
  • Bulbasaur is funny and endearing, but the base breaks on whether this makes him a good character or bland comic relief.
• Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • The Hitmonchan who gets trapped by MissingNo.
  • Sandshrew (also known as Andrew and Dirtle) is well-liked for his adorable personality.
  • Mewtwo stole the show in Episode 8 by coming out of seemingly nowhere and having some of the best lines.
  • The screaming Golbat in Episode 9.
• Harsher in Hindsight: In the "Three Episodes Left" video, Charmander teases his in-series fate on whether or not he's dead. Come Episode 10...
• Moral Event Horizon: The Caterpie Leader crossed theirs not by going back on their word to spare Charmander, but by later having Squirtle execute a deserter who pointed out there was no point to their war if their side lost just as many as the birds and no longer wanted to fight.
• Unexpected Character: No one was expecting Mewtwo of all Pokemon to appear in Episode 8. The inclusion of Generation IV Pokémon in Episode 10 also counts, since the previous episodes had only used Generation I Pokémon.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Chimchar's outbursts of anarchy, for no other reason than because he can, make him hard to like for sure, and he's generally just more of a douchebag than Charmander ever was. His offscreen death, which is played for sympathy, can feel cathartic since he was potentially even more bloodthirsty and savage than Abomasnow ever was. A classic example of the bastard had it coming.
