Boating Buddies

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene where SpongeBob, Squidward, and Mrs. Puff are in a runaway boat and after plowing through a costume store, they drive into a laboratory and are shrunken by a shrink ray that was intended to be used on a mailman, who then breaks out of his restraints to eat a potato chip that they ran under.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: This is widely considered one of the worst episodes of the series because of SpongeBob acting creepy towards Squidward, and all of the torture Squidward goes through when all he did was drive over a stop sign.
  • Funny Moments: When Mrs. Puff learns that she's not the only one who is bothered by SpongeBob.
Squidward: I was trying to get away from him! [points at SpongeBob who is gazing at him creepily] He is the bane of my existence!
    Mrs. Puff: Yours too?!
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A story revolving around Squidward getting a ticket and having to go to Boating School to reclaim his license becomes a bit too realistic after hearing that Roger Bumpass (Squidward's voice actor) got arrested for DUI activity.
  • Ho Yay: Lots of it. It starts with SpongeBob searching for the source of a "noise", and upon reaching the silent Squidward, claims it was his breathing. After a chase that gets Squidward assigned to boating school, SpongeBob adheres to Squidward's side, stares at him with huge eyes while breathing in heavy glee, strokes him with a loving two-fingered caress, and even draws a big "SpongeBob + Squidward, Boating Buddies 4-ever" picture on the chalkboard, complete with hearts!
  • Memetic Mutation:
Squidward is out sunbathing, when SpongeBob walks by and spills his drink.
    SpongeBob: Coffee rain!
    Squidward: It's hot chocolate!
    SpongeBob:... Chocolate rain!
  • Never Live It Down: SpongeBob's creepy stalker-like expression towards Squidward as the latter is openly chewing him out for his usual annoyances.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Squidward and Mrs. Puff's Commonality Connection of not being able to stand SpongeBob could have led to some connection between these two within the story, but it’s never brought up again after a single offhand joke.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Generally agreed to be one of SpongeBob’s worst appearances, on par with other infamous episodes such as “Choir Boys”. Like the latter, his Lethally Stupid and Stalker without a Crush tendencies are exaggerated extremes.
  • The Woobie: Squidward. SpongeBob wouldn't stop being a creepy stalker towards him throughout the episode, he gets badly beaten by a bullying fish twice thanks to SpongeBob's incompetence, and lastly, he has to start over boating school because he didn't finish his boating test in time thanks to being covered in bandages. In that case, he would have to be stuck with SpongeBob again.

The Krabby Kronicle

  • Catharsis Factor: SpongeBob turning the tables and writing a hit piece against Mr. Krabs, who is then mobbed by the angry townsfolk (including the people SpongeBob was forced to write defaming articles about) and having all of his money taken back is oh-so sweet to watch. That is, until he decides to print his own money.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Patrick is shown to have married a pole at the end of the episode. As bizarre as it seems, in the years since this episode aired, the awareness of objectum sexualitynote  has allowed for people to go from mere attraction to inanimate objects to marrying them (complete with official weddings and everything), just like Patrick does in this episode. Examples of this include the woman who married a train station and the woman who married her duvet.
  • Never Live It Down: Mr. Krabs forcing SpongeBob to tell insulting stories about others.
