Dragons, Butterflies, And Who Knows What Else? by HotPatooty is a drabbles spinoff of The Dragon and the Butterfly, a Encanto/How to Train Your Dragon Crossover fanfic where Hiccup and Toothless runaway from Berk, only to find a home in the Encanto.

The fanfic can be read on Archive of Our Own here.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Dagur seems to find the idea of killing a "demigod" as a one-way ticket to being the most feared and respected Viking in the Archipelago.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Like his canon-counterpart, Dagur winds up stranded by himself, slowly being driven to madness (or more madness) by the isolation. While this gave canon!Dagur clarity that led to his Heel–Face Turn, all this did for fanfic!Dagur was solidify his hatred into a generalized vendetta against everyone in his life, joining Drago Bludvist as one of his generals with the promise of revenge against Hiccup.
  • Anachronic Order: Being a drabbles series, the chronological order the chapters are told in flip-flop between the beginning of The Dragon and the Butterfly (where Hiccup and Toothless discover the Encanto) and the ending (their children's gift-ceremony).
  • Arc Villain: Dagur the Deranged takes over as the antagonist of the "Dagur Arc", being the first fully-evil antagonist introduced in the series.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Valentina completely forgot about the life-changing news that she was pregnant after enjoying a pair of Gronkles sparring in the streets.
  • Big Sister Bully: Hiccup gets a front-row seat to Mirabel and Isabela's relationship when Mirabel accidentally bumps into her and Isabela responds by verbally assaulting her.
  • Black Widow: Hiccup jokes that the "boyfriend" that Mirabel "makes goo-goo eyes at" (according to Isabela, anyway) won't last because she would kill him.
  • Blatant Lies: Everyone tries convincing Dagur that Hiccup was trying to kill Toothless and that the rumors he had been hearing are just misunderstandings, and that there are no "demigods." He doesn't buy it for a second.
  • Bread and Circuses: When Isabela covers the wrecked shop in flowers, everyone acts as though Isabela did a great thing, much to Hiccup and Mirabel's frustrations.
Hiccup: She didn't even do anything! The shop is still wrecked, now it's just a wreck that's covered in flowers!
    Mirabel: Welcome to my world...
  • Cassandra Truth: While Dagur is suspicious of all of the lies they try to feed him, the one thing they tell him that is the truth — that Mirabel is Hiccup's girlfriend, not his servant — he scoffs at.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Peep from the legend was a woman with godlike prowess who was eventually imprisoned within the Earth for her treacherous antics, her attempts at freeing herself causing earthquakes on Berk. This is the same fate Loki suffers in Norse Mythology, this being the Viking's explanation for earthquakes.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Mirabel and Hiccup manage to get all but one of the donkeys when trying to round them all up, that donkey accidentally destroys the entire stock of china in a china-shop. This gives Alma an excuse to show Mirabel that she can't be relied on, treating this one misstep (including the fact that she had to use a machine to accomplish this) as though it invalidates everything else.
  • Futureshadowing: In Chapter 3, Hiccup and Mirabel have a Seinfeldian Conversation about how satisfying eel soup can be, this taking place years before "Belly Bump" when Mirabel has Wacky Cravings for Eel Soup.
  • Gaslighting: In the second chapter, Isabela usually waits until it's just her and Mirabel before she starts to bully her. That way, people will think Mirabel is crazy when she tries to tell someone.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Mirabel's parents apparently keep a stash of ice cream specifically for when Mirabel suffers from heartbreak of some kind. In this case, it's over their fight.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The crux of the conflict in Chapter 6 is that Hiccup unwittingly upsets Antonio with the idea that everyone will die eventually, Hiccup having been taught such things at a much earlier age (as were everyone else on Berk).
  • Knows a Guy Who Knows a Guy: Dagur learns about Berk's "dragon army" from "a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a group of guys, who knows a lady" who knew about it.
  • Legend Fades to Myth: As impressive as the kind of feats Stoick and the other Vikings are capable, the kind of Super-Strength and invincibility Peep was capable of definitely sound like exaggerations that inevitably happen through oral tradition. Over time, her name became sort of a boogeyman for Berk's children, eventually outlawing the name from being used on Berk all-together because of how scary she was. In reality, the whole legend was made up by elders to honor the second-born of the Chief's family who died at a young age, thus the name was made taboo because hearing the name was his Trauma Button.
    Hiccup: That sounds... highly implausible.
Mirabel: Yeah, I'm willing to bet none of that stuff happened.
  • Like a Duck Takes to Water: Despite having never cooked before, Hiccup takes to it immediately, managing to help Julieta fix the next day's batch of medicinal food and that night's dinner with exceptional skill and efficiency.
  • Muggle Power: Dagur aspires to kill the Madrigals because he believes them to be Demigods, therefor killing them makes him better than them and, by extension, everyone else.
  • One-Steve Limit: Apparently, Hiccup's positive reputation has resulted in a few babies on Berk being named after him, the negative connotations originally associated with the name having gone.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Dagur mocks Mirabel for her poor eyesight and declares that he'll have "physical impairments" be a felony that means life in prison.
Dagur: The Berserker tribe is only for the strongest!
    Gobber: How progressive.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Mirabel rightfully points out that Dagur is acting like a Spoiled Brat and he won't be taken seriously as a leader if he continues to throws tantrums over every little thing. Dagur being Dagur, the lecture goes over his head and tells Hiccup to reign in his "servant."
  • Scheherezade Gambit: After Dagur kidnaps him, Bruno manages to buy himself time by making various requests (untying him, feeding him, etc.), knowing that they don't actually know how his gift works and thus making up various arbitrary parameters for it.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: After Mirabel and Hiccup cool off from their fight in Chapter 6, they both think one will dump the other in favor of a person in town they percieve as more attractive than them.
Mirabel: He's totally gonna dump me... Probably for Paulita, her hair's way prettier than mine...
Hiccup: She's totally gonna dump me... Probably for Mattias, that guy's got abs for days...
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Dagur figures out that everyone was lying and has Bruno kidnapped after Bruno saves him from being crushed by a falling statue.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: When an unconscious Hiccup screams when his leg gets amputated, Camilo vomits over the side of the boat.
