YMMV / Spider-Man Beyond

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: Issue #82 contains no superheroics or any connection to the overarching Beyond plot, instead being a horror story in which the hospitalized Peter nearly falls victim to a vampire-like creature before being saved by Mary Jane.
  • Character Rerailment: After so many comics with over-the-top suits and mixed in character groups with little in common, Misty Knight is back at just common red clothes and teaming up (and snarking back-and-forth) with Colleen Wing. Just like in Daughters of the Dragon.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: It says something that out of the many unpopular contenders to the Goblin legacy, Queen Goblin was largely praised by readers upon her introduction. As an already corrupted character under Norman's influence, sporting a wonderfully gaudy design,, combined with a unique method using Norman's sins instead of yet another use of the formula, she already had a good start. Then she turns out to be as gleefully insane as her predecessor, gives both Ben and Peter a heck of a fight, and damages the Daily Bugle.
  • Fashion-Victim Villain: Maxine Danger's pink bowl cut.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: There is a Bat Family Crossover with Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022): the Beyond corporation now owns the rights to everything Spider-Man related, and gave Miles a "Cease & Desist" order to give up the identity. Although this was published shortly after the Steve Ditko estate filed a lawsuit against Marvel over the rights to the characters created by Ditko (mainly Spider-Man, Dr. Strange and those introduced in the The Amazing Spider-Man run), the story was written before it.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Even before the end of The Amazing Spider-Man (2018), Marvel was teasing that the reason Ben would be taking over for Peter was the latter’s death, something fans were immediately skeptical about as the death would be occurring a mere two months before Spider-Man: No Way Home was due to be released, and less than a year away from the sixtieth anniversary of the Spider-Man franchise as a whole, and the publication of issue 900 of The Amazing Spider-Man. Not even getting into how the last two instances of Peter's proclaimed demise, The Other and Dying Wish/Superior Spider Man, never took permanently (This's comics we're talkin' here, guys). Sure enough, Peter spends the bulk of the run recovering from radiation poisoning in the background.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Queen Goblin's fight against the Spider-Men, Black Cat, and Mary Jane barely lasts half an issue, but many readers considered it the most entertaining part in the Beyond storyline.
  • Replacement Scrappy: While the previous storyline wasn't without its fair share of criticism, Peter's characterization was overwhelmingly praised as a return to form that grounded the character away from recent gimmicks, while reestablishing his relationships with his supporting cast. In contrast, Ben has always been a controversial character for largely sharing a vast swath of Spider-Man's history that's rarely touched upon outside of his jealousy and largely unearned envy of Peter. Come this arc, and said jealousy only drives him to further levels of nihilism, turning away even Ben's audience as he only continued to do increasingly unlikable things that damage Spider-Man's reputation while Peter sits out the bulk of the arc. As Ben only digs himself deeper working for an Obviously Evil corporation, letting them voluntarily mess with his mind, the fanbase largely stopped caring about what happened, and yearned to see Riley get what was coming to him.
  • Uncertain Audience: If you're a fan of Peter, he's out of commission for most of the story. If you're a fan of Ben, you'll find his characterization jarring, and his descent into darkness once again infuriating. If you're a fan of Nextwave, where Beyond originates, you'll find little in the way of the quirky insanity the original series provided besides occasional token nods to the series. If you’re a fan of Spencer's run, there will be little acknowledgement or follow-up. It all makes you wonder who exactly this is all for.
