YMMV / Shimoneta

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: In the anime, does Gouriki develop a crush on Tanukichi after seeing him dressed as a woman, or does he simply like knowing another guy who shares his habit?
  • Anvilicious:
    • The series is incredibly unsubtle about how censorship is bad and there's nothing inherently wrong or evil with sexuality. This works in its benefit, as a more restrained or "subtle" message would have been completely against the point. When your message is that lewdness is its own type of freedom, taking it as far as you can drives the point home.
    • Ignorance about sex, relationships, and how to properly express one's sexual desire is a potential recipe for sexual misconduct, and authoritarian restriction of freedoms for the sake of limiting deviancy only worsens the problem. This point is also taken to its most ridiculous, cartoonish extents in this series.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Anna. Despite being one of the main draws of the series, she isn't without her critics. Especially those who take issue with the fact that she tried to rape Tanukichi.
  • Broken Base: The message that pornography is not evil and about how being a pervert is okay. Viewers are split on whether or not it's a genuinely sex-positive message or if the author is Wangsting to not take away his porn stash.
  • Crossing the Line Twice:
    • In the very first episode, Ayame's plan to teach Tokioka's students about how sex works is to hijack a school assembly and show them a video of flies mating, while providing a human voiceover. And it works.
    • Anna's attempted rape scene wouldn't be funny under normal circumstances. Except she's clueless about how it's supposed to work, since she was never taught about sexual intercourse thanks to her parents forbidding it. Thus, Hilarity Ensues, though some still don't think it's funny.
    • In the same scene, someone watching a friend being sexually assaulted and doing nothing to help isn't funny. Saotome leaning out of the closet, burning with artistic inspiration, and mouthing encouragement to Tanukichi to keep going? Gut-busting.
    • Any disgust over the "love rainbow" made from Anna's vaginal secretions when she jumps off the cliff (episode 5), is mitigated by just how over-the-top the scene is.
    • The scene where Anna squirts on Tanukichi's face, though Gouriki assumes that it's "sweat" when he finds them.
    • If that wasn't enough, much of the next episode is practically a do-it-yourself video on how to make self-pleasuring aids, which is then recapped in the credits in live action.
    • Tanukichi having to carry all his underwear with him at all times to keep Anna from stealing them is awful. The fact she suffers obvious withdrawal symptoms after being forced to go cold turkey for a week is hilarious.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: While the series did reach a high popularity in Japan, it was definitely much less than what it got abroad.
  • Growing the Beard: For many, the series really starts picking up its pace once Anna goes absolutely nuts for Tanukichi.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The ending theme has a funny moment where a silhouette of Anna licks a freaked out Tanukichi. This moment is not so funny after episode 4 where Anna attempts to rape him. It's made worse in that they even color her in the credits from that point on, too.
    • Anna became a meme generator thanks to her "love nectar". Then her Japanese voice actress, Miyu Matsuki, tragically died shortly after the series finished airing of a lymphoma caused by a very rare form of the Epstein-Barr virus. The virus is a form of herpes which can be spread orally via saliva and genital secretions. For some fans, the joke lost its humor after that.
    • More than a few fans have noted how eerily prophetic the series is with the rise of increasingly puritanical content policies on various internet platforms, and bills like SESTA and FOSTA pushing them to go even further under risk of criminal prosecution.
    • In Chapter 1, a woman tries to falsely accuse Gouriki of sexual harassment in an attempt to make quick money. Tanukichi is aware of what's going on and quickly puts a stop to it. In response, the woman tries to turn the harassment claim on him out of spite. Unfortunately, because of increasing laws meant to stop sexual harassment, false accusations have become more common with the motives of the accuser being money, revenge, etc.
  • Ho Yay:
    • The locker room scene between Tanukichi and Oboro, in Chapter 10, leads to a surprise gender reveal, right as Ayame walks in on them.
    • In the anime, once Gouriki sees how good Tanukichi looks in drag, he abandons all animosity towards him and starts making him lunch daily. He blushes the first time he offers it to him, causing Ayame to comment on how close they've become. They become such a popular ship (in-universe) amongst the girls at the school, that Ayame and Otome make a ten volume doujinshi titled Please Don't Hate My Banana about them.
    • In the manga, some of the female members of Gathered Fabric have been caught stealing other girls' undergarments.
    • Kosuri's admiration of Ayame eventually develops into a full blown girl crush at the end of chapter 12. It doesn't go unnoticed by Ayame, who makes it clear that the feeling isn't mutual.
    • Saotome begins the series being secretly in love with Anna. Several times she mentions Anna being the inspiration behind her drawings, including full body (presumably nude) portraits, and calls her "My sweet Anna" right to Tanukichi's face in one scene. She's also visibly aroused by erotic magazines that feature other women and discovers the potential of yuri in the bath when Kosuri gropes Ayame, as she immediately starts drawing anew at the sight.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: It's no secret that a lot of people decided to watch the series due to Anna's crazy antics, especially regarding the "cookie" scene.
  • Memetic Mutation: Anna putting "Love Nectar" in food is a common joke among Western fans.
  • Mis-blamed: Fans often say Anna "broke into" Tanukichi's apartment (episode 4). This isn't the case. He plainly left a note outside the door, note  which said he reciprocated and wanted to meet with her, and left the door unlocked.
  • Nausea Fuel:
    • The fact that Anna baked cookies with her "love nectar" mixed in the dough and fed them to Tanukichi.
    • White Peak sips wine that has a pair of panties soaking it in. And given his preference for women's underwear that've been freshly worn, it's safe to assume the same applies to the pair he's drinking from.
  • The Scrappy: Fans started to get weary and tired of Kosuri's bratty attitude and shenanigans when she revealed that the reason why she joined SOX is to stir up trouble for shits and giggles. Her brief Faceā€“Heel Turn didn't help matters.
  • Squick:
    • The fact that members of Gathered Fabric choose to wear freshly worn panties and boxers as masks.
    • White Peak, the leader of Gathered Fabric, wears an entire body suit of white panties that haven't been washed in days, in order to retain the scent of the women who wore them. And he soaks another pair in a wine glass, to enrich "the flavor".
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • "SOX" stands for "Sex most Often happens on X-mas". Yet, viewers have noted there isn't a single Christmas episode. The short length of the anime and the lack of a second season are at least partially to blame.
    • The fact that Gouriki never finds out about Oboro is another missed opportunity, given that both of them wear women's lingerie underneath their uniforms. One also wonders if Gouriki would react the same as when he saw Tanukichi disguised as a girl and, if so, how would Oboro respond to someone hitting on him?
  • Values Dissonance: Tanukichi's backstory focuses heavily on the Japanese idea that a criminal parent would have a criminal child, whereas western nations ideally view each person individually. A criminal parent might be a matter of embarrassment or shame, but nowhere near the level of ostracization Tanukichi faced.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Helped fans gain a renewed interest in J.C. Staff alongside Prison School and Food Wars!, which aired during the same season.
