YMMV / Seven Mortal Sins

Go To

  • Awesome Ego:
    • Lucifer of course. As expected from the Sin of Pride, she hits the Smug Super trope full force. She is never NOT reminding the other Sins that she will defeat all of them and take over Hell and even laughs in their faces when she actually manages to overpower them thanks to the fact that she is very smart and clever. And seeing her keep all of her pride even when faced with some weird situations and Fanservicey hijinks is always fun to watch.
    • Belial's performance in the final episode. Despite spending much of the series as a Smug Snake, when she faces Michael at the end, she proudly proclaims herself as Belial of Vanity with all of the vain-ness one has come to expect from her. Only this time, it's actually awesome.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In episode six we see Leviathan acting the role of an NPC in Belphegor's game, dressed up as angel no less. Leviathan enjoying dressing this way is never mentioned again.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Mammon tricks thousands of women into a contract that condemns them to damnnation, forces them to babysit 500,000 of her demonic spawn and takes control of all of their assists. She states that this is because her husband left her and now she's forced to settle with the debt. Out of all the other Sins, she's easily the most sympathetic.
    • Also, Belial herself is one. Her own secret origin in Episode 11 as the angel Satanael (God's most loyal angel) reveals the Freudian Excuse that her own road to Hell was paved with good intentions when she was unexplainedly and unceremoniously exiled to Hell by Lucifer when her own overeagerly independent attempts to bring humans closer to God through half-true stories about supernatural miracles had the unintended and unexpected reverse effect of ultimately driving humans away from God and into the influence of the Mortal Sins, by causing humans (who had become lazy relying entirely on miracles) to lose faith when the stories were inevitably proven to be mostly inflated hype. Lucifer never bothered to explain this to her and just cast her out immediately. Despite this, Belial still remained loyal to God such that she betrayed Hell merely in order to become an angel once again, only for her to learn that she was exiled upon direct orders from God and not at all by the will of Lucifer.
    • Lucifer also counts. Like Belial, she too was faithful to God before He suddenly stopped listening to her. When she learned about his plans to erase both Earth and Hell to purge all sin, she attempted to stop him and ended up getting banished from Heaven as a result.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Lucifer, Fallen Angel turned Demon Lord of Pride, can achieve anything she sets her mind to. Deciding to take over hell, Lucifer has a policy of challenging the Demon Lords known as the Mortal Sins at their own games on their own turf, constantly getting the better of them and winning no matter what venue they choose, constantly coming up with new plans and strategies. It is later revealed that for all her haughtiness and deep pride in herself, Lucifer was the only angel to object to God's plan to wipe out hell and the earth, having been protecting humanity from the start, and manages to get the better of both her arch-rivals, the demon lord Belial and the new leader of the Seven Lively Virtues, her old partner Michael via a few clever gambits, culminating in Lucifer embracing her love for her human companion Maria and claiming her rightful throne as the ruler of hell and queen of pride itself.
  • Moe: Despite her raging Jerkassery, Leviathian fawning and squeeing over Lucifer is adorable. The fact she genuinely loves and cares about her as opposed to it being simple, empty lust, and the fact she also starts caring about Maria as well (in a vitriolic best bud way) helps drive it home.
    • Maria is the only truly good person throughout the series, with the cuteness to match.
  • Moral Event Horizon: God of all people crosses it by ordering a purge on Earth. While humans aren't perfect, God is very much in the wrong to enact mass genocide on them to restart everything from scratch.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The end of the first episode. Maria see Lucifer again and when she tries to talk to her, she gets impaled. It turned out be non lethal by the next episode, but at the cost of being dragged around as Lucifer's slave.
    • In the following episode, Leviathan's jealousy of Maria reaches the breaking point and she assaults her. Leviathan points out that because Maria is immortal due to Lucifer stealing her heart, she can do whatever she pleases to her and she'll survive it.
    • When Lucifer's Garb of Punishment is removed and she can gain followers, it turns out that she can forcibly do so with masses of people when they take pride in literally anything. She states if she wanted to she could do that to all of humanity.
  • The Woobie: Maria gets her heart stolen by Lucifer, who treats her like dirt; Leviathan wants to get rid of her so she can have Lucifer for herself; the other Demon Lords are planning to take advantage of her just to get back at Lucifer; and she gets belittled every time she makes a mistake. A very sad fate for such a sweet and gentle girl. Though one must give her props for actually befriending Lucifer after beginning to assert herself more. By the end, it's strongly implied Lucifer has fallen in love with Maria.
