YMMV / Power Bomberman

Go To

  • Abridged Arena Array: The three most commonly-played stages are Path to Glory, Full Power and Retro, likely due to not containing any obtrusive gimmicks.
  • Best Level Ever:
    • Out of Touch is fun due to most variants having pits and lacking boundaries on the left and right sides of the field, meaning you can Ring Out players using the Push or Power Glove items. Some variants also feature meteors crashing on the stage, for extra destructive chaos. UWAAAAaaaaaaaa...
    • Miniature City, thanks to its eponymous theme. What could possibly be more fun than blowing up toy cars for items? Sending Crumble Bombs hurling towards the other players, of course!
    • Adventure Island is well-regarded by the playerbase due to the tripping rocks proving to be a fun gimmick as well as it being a fun reference to another Hudson Soft property.
    • Adok is Full Power on steroids. It features a bunch of tiles that, when bombed, will send shockwaves, flames or discs around the field. The result is a chaotic, but highly entertaining battle with players waltzing around, trying to avoid getting hit.
    • Bomura's Rampage is a good usage of the increased size Wide Stages provide. You have to contend not only with the Bombers, but also the eponymous Notzilla roaming around and breathing fire, which makes for a memorable experience.
    • Runaway Train, another stage without any boundaries. The players are aboard one of two train wagons, and can only access the other using springs located near the edge. Every once in a while, the wagon following behind will detach, taking out all players in it if they don't get out in time before it goes off-screen.
  • Broken Base: The option to use healthbars. Are they a good way to ease beginners into the game, or do they take away from the fast-paced nature of game by allowing players to take more hits?
  • Demonic Spiders: The Onils, while not too smart or fast, have an advantage in numbers due to their constant spawning, and can quickly overwhelm the players.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Among the original Louies, Bottlooi is well-liked due to her Hard-Drinking Party Girl design.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: While the game contains a lot of references to earlier titles in the series, the focus is not on representing as much of the franchise as possible, but rather on making the game fun to play. Therefore, requests to add items or stages just so that they are represented in some way in the game is frowned upon by the community.
  • Gateway Series: The game has introduced many to some of the more obscure titles in the Bomberman franchise, including some mobile games that would've otherwise been lost to time like Bomberman Chains, the anime series Bomberman Jetters, or the Bomberman B-Daman toyline.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Just like the rest of the Bomberman series, a good amount of the player base hails from Latin America. When you play online, expect to see other players chatting in Spanish or Portuguese.
  • Growing the Beard: Version 0.7.1. Besides the usual addition of new stages, items and characters (far more than any update before or since, upping the roster from around 40 characters to over 300), this update also improved connection for online battles, overhauled the menus and interface (including the introduction of several new features such as the shop, character palettes, handicap selection and frag board), translated the game into Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese and removed many features that were seen as unpolished. Notably, the game's changelog lists any version prior to this one as "vintage".

  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Louies that are seen as underpowered often receive new abilities in updates. Specific examples:
    • Metalooi's only real power was being able to take two hits instead of one, making him the only Louie to not have a C button ability. Version 0.7.5 gave him the ability to self-destruct with a huge explosion, making him a reliable kill option.
    • Galooi could kick soft blocks, which was very situational and becomes useless when all the soft blocks are destroyed. Version 0.7.3 gave her the ability to kick bombs as well, while version 0.7.6 gave that kick a strong domino effect, to make it stand out from the Kick item, which can be found on almost every stage.
    • Bottlooi could throw bottles to send bombs forward only one tile. Version 0.7.6 made the bombs get kicked forward instead and able to jump through single-block walls, which made it more useful in pushing them away from the player.
    • Nagurooi could stun opponents with a punch, which was seen as difficult to use properly. Version 0.7.7 gave him the secondary ability of blocking, which turns him completely solid, in order to give players more options.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The trampolines in Jump Zone bounce players in a random direction with no way to control where they land. Their spawn location is also randomized, so they may appear in unwanted places.
  • Scrappy Weapon: The Blow Bomb splits into multiple bombs when kicked or thrown at the cost of making their firepower minimum. This makes it situational at best, and completely worthless at worst.
  • That One Attack: The Light Bomb has been the bane of many players because it goes against the game's established rules by exploding in a diagonal pattern instead of the usual cross shape.
  • That One Level:
    • B-1 Circuit. Most variants have the players running at Super-Speed, which naturally makes it problematic to dodge explosions and maneuver through the grid. Better hope to find some Geta sandals to slow yourself down!
    • Monster Havoc, due to its main gimmick being the Mook Maker in the center, which generates Onils and can end up causing lag during online matches.
    • Out of Time has the in-game speed constantly changing between normal, very slow and very fast, which can easily trip a player up if it happens when they are least expecting it.
    • Lights Out, the designated Blackout Basement level. Not only is it difficult to see what's going on, but there are also not enough items to take out the opponents efficiently.
  • Unexpected Character:
