• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Scyther is stated to hate the color red in this episode. Come Generation 2, its next evolution Scizor is red.
  • It took twenty years, but Sword and Shield finally added a Dark-type gym to the series in the form of the city of Spikemuth. And wouldn't you know it, even when made official, the gym challenge still consists of walking down an abandoned street and being jumped by random thugs with Pokémon.
• Memetic Mutation: For the longest time, this was the only episode to show that Pikachu liked ketchup. However, because of his sheer overreactions to it, many people would often portray it as one of his defining traits, to the point of near being a Cargo Ship. It wouldn't be until two decades later would the anime again acknowledge this in one of its end credits sequences.
• Tearjerker: Be honest. Comical Overreaction or not, your heart just can't help but go out for poor Pikachu when he cries over his ketchup bottle being broken.
