  • Broken Base:
    • The recurring guest appearances of Matt of SuperMega can be considered this. While many fans felt that he brought a sort of chemistry that blended well with the main trio at the timenote  to create many memorable moments, a lot of others disliked him for his tendency to show up randomly in series that were already in-progress with just the main three, not to mention his infamous shriek that served no purpose other than to catch viewers off guard.
    • Cory Beck was unanimously liked in the earlier days of the channel when he would make sporadic appearences whenever he was in town to visit. But as his appearences became more frequent in 2022 opinions on him became more divided. While some find him hilarious due to being the biggest space case on the channel, others can't stand his tendency to enter into a screaming rage at the slightest inconvenience, his constant lusting over any thing that looks remotely female (as well as how frequently he brings up disgusting fetishes) or his habit of being confidently wrong about half the topics he brings up.
    • Whether or not the show remains good or has gotten somewhat worse over time is a topic of fierce debate and, of course, entirely subjective. The debate's been raging since the end of the Ding Dong-Julian era and shows no signs of stopping. The base is so broken by this that no one can even nail down what the issue might be, whether it's hosts, the frequency of uploads, or the games being played.
    • The above two points came to a head during the summer/fall of 2023 with a several month-long streak of no content aside from Sonic Frontiers (Which had multiple episodes of Cory wandering around seemingly aimlessly) and Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 (which, while fun games to watch on their own, having the two run concurrently offers little diversity)note , not to mention all three series feature the already base breaking Cory. Some fans find these series to be the best OneyPlays have put out in a while, while others are stuck waiting for any new content.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Boy, do the boys ever. Not an episode goes by where Chris doesn't say something mildly offensive at best. The best example of this is the "Tiny Dictator Hypothetical" that takes up over 10 minutes of Kingdom Hearts episode 7... and manages to continue in an episode of Banjo-Kazooie.
    • The Worms videos also get in on this in two ways: one being the hilariously inappropriate names of certain individual worms (Standouts include Lil' Epstein, Enward, and Fetal Alcohol Syndromar), and the other being the custom maps in later videos that result in people like Markiplier, Justin Bieber, Chris Chan, and Tomar himself getting tons of holes blown in them as the battles rage on, much to the Boys' amusement.
    • Chris asking Tomar how he would respond to a brick falling off a truck and crushing his wife's head?note  Shocking and disturbing. Tomar's calm, measured response that he would take the time to get the driver's plates and file a complaint? Absolutely hysterical.
    • Once they bring up how terrible Marge VA's voice had degraded and they made a very mocking monster-like voice impression of her, mean spirited? Yeah, Funny? Yes.
    • The entire sketch about Chuckie's dead mother in their Kingdom Hearts playthrough. Only Chris & co. could make the most infamously heart-breaking and depressing episode of Rugrats, if not the actual most heart-breaking episode of any cartoon ever absolutely hilarious, especially when it culminates in Julian joking that Mr. Friend/Fiend is actually the transformed remnants of his mother's corpse, causing Oney to assume the role of Chas, who presents Mr. Friend to Chuckie and go "Look, Chuckie, it's your mom!", and DingDong points out how that means Chuckie killed his reincarnated mother.
    • The AI-generated Nostalgia Critic review of the Boy In the Striped Pajamas, a movie about the Holocaust. It's no wonder the guys all lose it, particularly Zach.
Nostalgia Critic: The biggest problem with the film is that it's incredibly manipulative. The film constantly tries to tug at your heartstrings, and it doesn't always succeed. The other problem is that the film is very one-sided. It's clear that the filmmakers have a very specific point of view, and they're not interested in hearing any other side of the story.
  • Designated Hero: Conversed. Chris recounts a time where he was on a date with someone and they went out to watch a movie with her, which was about a woman actively trying to find a husband amongst everyone she's ever slept with to "not be labeled as a slut" and a guy who "used her house to hide from girls he used for sex"note . He, DingDong and Julian talk about characters that "they're supposed to like but are total assholes" for a bit shortly after.
  • Discredited Meme:
    • Ding Dong implied during Kingdom Hearts he was tired of fans repeating "rhyming hypotheticals" in the comments. Though he's seemed to have softened on that according to Yooka-Laylee. He might also think this of "Lotsa spaghetti," as he edits in a laugh track when he says it.
    • The "Woah!" meme had become popular to people who haven't even heard of Chris or OneyPlays. Naturally, Chris was sick of it REALLY fast.
    • Some items that are normally Once an Episode have been parodied to hell and back lately by Chris and Ding Dong; the only one that doesn't seem to get this treatment is the occasional hypothetical.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Ding Dong for his constant snarking on the show while also having his own streaming show where he shows himself to be very humble, well-spoken and friendly.
    • Of the guest hosts that came on when Ding Dong and Julian were busy, PsychicPebbles AKA Zach Hadel, tended to be the most liked due to his delivery and crossing the line even more than than Chris does. Helps that Chris and Zach have frequently collaborated in the past. Once Ding Dong and Julian left, Zach became a mostly full-time cast member, much to the fan's delight.
    • Convicted Felon is just one of Zach's many worms that's no different than any others of its kind, but his amusing name and Zach's oddly deep characterization of him being a reformed criminal who's down on his luck made him surprisingly popular with viewers.
    • Corey is slowly growing into one due to his... rather bizarre behaviour.
  • Epileptic Trees: Parodied by Chris and Ding Dong when they suggest fake "Game Theories" about Crash Bandicoot, such as Aku Aku being Crash's future self or Bowser being the one who placed all the crates thorough the levels.
  • Estrogen Brigade: The audience for Oneyplays is primarily male, but there are plenty of female fans out there. Most of them tend to find at least one of the boys attractive or cute (especially Lyle for obvious reasons).
  • Fandom Rivalry: A VERY small amount of fans have a rivalry with Game Grumps and to an extent SuperMega fans, primarily having issues with Arin and bringing up Julian and Ding Dong's negative feelings towards Dream Daddy, a game endorsed by the Grumps. Averted HEAVILY in real life as the two teams are on good terms with Arin, Matt & Ryan being frequent guests on OneyPlays; for a while starting with the Sonic Adventure 2 playthrough, they even shared the same recording space.
    • This changed as Ding Dong revealed on one of his stream that he and Julian no longer hang out in the Game Grumps' offices after people began to act weird towards them after their critical comments towards Dream Daddy.
    • For a while, people thought that the Dream Daddy situation is the reason they stopped recording in Arin's studio. Over a year later Ding Dong said on one of his streams that the actual reason was that Arin's recording setup was all controlled by a single universal remote that, according to Ding Dong, was prone to not working and everything had to be put on hold while it was either fixed or new batteries were put in. By comparison, recording in Chris' living room may not be soundproofed, but it's quick and easy and lets the three of them relax.
    • Atop the Fourth Wall fans have a low opinion of Oney fans as these fans will happily torment Linkara by tap dancing on his Berserk Button and think it's funny.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Conversely, Oney fans are on good terms with fans of The Nostalgia Critic, mainly due to Doug Walker himself seeing the boys' jokes of him as good-natured ribbing and that he found their impressions of him Actually Pretty Funny.
  • Gaslighting: During the Pokemon Red playthrough, Matt told a hypothetical about how he wanted to come into the Game Grumps officenote  one day wearing a fedora for the sole purpose of hoping someone would come up and tease him about it. Then he would pretend to be upset about it all day to the point that Arin would pull the offending person off to the side and scold them for it. Chris sums it up succinctly.
Chris: *Laughs* Wow, you're an asshole.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • A glitch in The Grinch causes the Grinch to fall out of the level area, which the boys find amusing.
    • While playing Star Wars: Obi-Wan, the boys encounter a glitch in a cutscene that causes a man to spawn in the middle of the Jedi council chamber, make a bizarre scream/buzzer noise for half a second and then fade away while Obi-Wan holds half of a conversation with the non-existent Jedi Council. They react with a combination of laughter and disbelief at what they just witnessed.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • As part of the "Season's Greetings" video, Chris and the gang play "Last Christmas" by Wham!. George Michael passed away on the day the video was uploaded.
    • During their playthrough of MarbleBlast Ultra, the boys congratulate Stefan Karl Stefansson on beating cancer, before poking fun at his character some more. While he was doing better for a little while, he unfortunately relapsed and passed away at a later date.
    • During their playthrough of Illbleed, they remark that everyone who has ever met John Kricfalusi has had a bad experience with him. Kricfalusi was exposed as a sexual predator only a few months later.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: The boys are very, VERY honest and clear about their opinions about the games they play. This has led to call outs of this, most notably for God of War (PS4) which Chris panned on Twitter, resulting in several comments criticizing him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • At one point during the Dark Souls playthrough, Julian says "Welcome back to OneyPlays everybody; we're playing Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy." Given a bit of lag time between recording and posting, this comment might have been made shortly before the GamesRadar review comparing the difficulty of the N. Sane Trilogy to Dark Souls was released. Manages to become funnier in a later episode - and a later recording session - where Ding Dong states they won't make that joke.
    • Just a few months after their Hercules videos, Kingdom Hearts III released, and in the Olympus world the player can find tiny Hercules action figures laying around all over the place... a.k.a, collectibles in the Hercules game that Chris infamously gaslit Zach into believing were all a character named Herculad. This did not go unnoticed among the fans.
    • In episode 20 of their Kingdom Hearts II playthrough, Ding Dong jokingly asks "Do you think Sora will use an iPhone in the new game?" In Kingdom Hearts III, Sora does indeed get a smartphone called a Gummiphone.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • The fandom jokingly refers to Genesis Valentine as a God-like figure. This is thanks to the fact that he would make outrageous and unverifiable claims like being able to destroy someone else's computer with his sword, being invincible, and having beaten Shadow the Hedgehog on a supposed secret difficulty.
    • Tomar also counts as one while being a Memetic Psychopath at the same time, as it's common to depict him as an Invincible Villain who nobody is safe from, much like Seanbaby's interpretation of Popsicle Pete.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • HypotheticalsExplanation
    • "Hey Tomar, what would you do if..."Explanation
    • The Hitler HypotheticalExplanation
      • "Shapiffany" Explanation
    • Doug Walker/Nostalgia Critic JokesExplanation
    • Linkara/"The Lightbringer"Explanation
    • Jon and Chris as Arin's exes.Explanation
    • "Lyle! Lyle! Turn on the TV they hit the PENTAGON! THEY HIT THE FUCKING PENTAGON!"Explanation
    • Herculad Explanation
    • "Look Tomar, it's you!" Explanation
  • Memetic Psychopath: Fans love to paint the friendly, easygoing Tomar as a stone-cold sociopath who has committed every human rights violation known to man and then some, likely due to Chris and Zach playing around with this in their commentary.
  • Misaimed Fandom: A minor example, but Chris has attracted Channel Awesome detractors to the channel thanks to the many jokes he and the boys make at the expense of the Nostalgia Critic and other CA alumni. However, despite not being afraid to criticize them for their shortcomings, Chris really does enjoy watching Nostalgia Critic and Linkara among others and is worried that they'll think he legitimately hates them.
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
  • Nausea Fuel: OneyPlays does not shy away from gross-out humor.
  • Sensory Abuse: Matt's ear-piercing, high-pitched scream is the most notable example. It's especially jarring because he sometimes did it out of nowhere, and for a short time it was used as the end gag for a couple episodes. Needless to say, it's earned the ire of many watchers for episodes where he makes appearances in.
  • Signature Scene:
    • Practically the entirety of Chris, DD, and Julian's classic playthrough of Lord of the Rings for DOS. It even received its own re-animated collab!
    • That moment when Chris accidentally starts a new game in Wild Woody, which effectively erased all of Ding Dong's progress. Ding Dong was not very amused, to say the least.
    • The battle of Markiplier, Trumpet Guy, and Inflatus Bieber in their Worms series, partially because of the hilariously bizarre map, but mostly for it being one of very few times Zach wins a match.
    • The entire clone hypothetical, from Little Hitler during the Kingdom Hearts playthrough to the Shapiffany continuation in Banjo-Kazooie. Both situations devolved into hilarity as the boys screamed at Chris due to his weird wording and sudden additions to the hypotheticals.
  • Tear Jerker: During episode 23 of their second Dark Souls playthrough, the boys discuss ways they might die. Though in typical OneyPlays fashion, it delves into Black Comedy territory.
  • That One Level: Floor 15 in Super Monkey Ball becomes this for Ding Dong.
