YMMV / 101 Dalmatian Street

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • The song "In The House" features the lyric, "Sixty-nine to go."
    • Dylan suggesting a private swim to Dolly, y'know, his step-sister, in "Long Tongue Day" sounds really suggestive out of context.
  • Adorkable: Some of the pups can be downright endearing at times due to their dorkiness.
    • Dylan loves paleontology, space, and video games - he also has a Diplodocus plush that he calls "Dippy."
    • Dolly also qualifies whenever she's around her crush, Hansel.
    • Dawkins also has his moments, such as his playing with his Princess Positron doll in "The Walls Are Alive."
Dolly: Dawkins, step away from the baby doll.
Dawkins: Princess Positron is no baby! She's an aerospace engineer. [to the doll] Fancy a space walk? [pulls draw string]
Princess Positron: Positronly! [Dawkins gives Dolly a huge grin and makes excited noises]
    • Deepak's reaction to Constantin's Guru Miaow-related things is nothing short of just plain cute. His overall sweet-natured and skittish personality can make him come off as this in general as well.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Because there are loads of characters in this series, even fans are bound to be divided over at least some of the cast.
  • Cargo Ship: Dawkins is prone to get involved in these, mainly with Princess Positron and Fetch. He loses both of them.
  • Catharsis Factor:
  • Complete Monster: Cruella de Vil, the one and only Devil Woman, returns in this series to seek revenge on the descendants of Pongo and Perdita. The decades since the original movie have turned Cruella into a harridan by harridan's standards who now acts with full regard to the Dalmatians' sapience. Cruella plans to mince all 99 of the puppies in her very own skinning machine, intending to force their parents Doug and Delilah to watch the entire macabre process before turning them into "matching luggage". Cruella is also hideously abusive to her grand-nephew Hunter, at one point leaving him locked in a shipping container for six months with only dog food to eat, resulting in the poor kid undergoing Sanity Slippage. When he discovers that she actually intends to kill the puppies and calls her a monster, Cruella takes it as a compliment before ordering his henchmen to have him caged up with the puppies because she has grown bored of him.
  • Creepy Cute: Dante is this in spades. Despite his dark fur, baggy eyes, and spiked collar, he's often seen as just as cute as his fellow pups and wouldn't look too out of place in a show like Ruby Gloom.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Hunter threatening the Dalmatians' house and causing a mass panic among the puppies is Nightmare Fuel. Dante becoming overjoyed about being right, dancing about and cooing to a panicked Dorothy about it? Very Skewed Priorities, and downright hilarious.
  • Designated Villain: Pearl in "The Nose Job." She is treated as the bad guy for arresting Diesel, but the trouble is that Diesel DID break the park ban by digging into the already-vandalized park (he did it in his sleep, but still). This may have been intentional, though, as it is actually lampshaded when Pearl catches Dylan and Diesel finding the evidence and says that "a jailbreak is a serious offense."
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Among the pups, Dante is arguably the most popular outside of Dylan and Dolly thanks to his cool character design, hammy personality, and the fact that nearly every time he appears, it's a Funny Moment.
    • The second most popular when it isn't Dante is Deepak, for his Woobie Nice Guy personality and his unique spot pattern.
    • Fergus the fox seems to have a bit of a following as well. Especially since he's the only non-Scrappy member of the Canal Crew.
    • Deja Vu is arguably the most popular out of Triple-D, due to her kooky personality.
    • Da Vinci is a pup who only got spotlight in one episode so far. She got a lot of attention from the fans for being unique compared to the other pups. Her spotlight episode, “Doggy Da Vinci,” is arguably the most popular episode of the series by far.
    • Summer surprisingly got quite a cult following for a one shot character. She is hands down the most popular love interest of Dylan’s that the fans like to ship him with.
    • Delgado has quite an impressive fan base. It could be largely because he’s a Handicapped Badass. He barely did a thing in the series. Rumors also suggest his popularity could come from his voice actor, Jack Binstead, since he was the one who announced the official US launch date of the series.
  • Epileptic Trees: Due to the show being quietly cancelled in 2020, rumors about a second season continued into 2021. The link on the main page saying it was renewed before the series premiered was eventually deleted, implying that it might have been cancelled. However, it was confirmed that a number of episodes were written and ready to be animated, even though Season 2 was never even greenlit by Disney, and all news of the show itself was swept under the rug for many months. Fans tried asking the creators for more info, but all remained silent on the matter. Atomic Cartoons then confirmed in February 2021 that they would not be involved in production of any further seasons. It should be noted that not every Disney show lands an automatic renewal though - Season 2 of Big City Greens was greenlit before the show aired and it took until January 2021 for Season 3 to be confirmed to the general public. So whether or not the show was Screwed by the Network was unclear for many months, until at long last, in June 2021, the show was confirmed to be fully cancelled.
  • Fan Nickname: The Dimitri Trio are sometimes referred to as "The Dimitrio."
  • Fanfic Fuel: A lot of fan interpretations have popped up of the other 81 puppies' personalities and appearances.
    • Hunter's fate being left ambiguous in the series finale. This has led to serval fan works having the Fandom-Specific Plot of Hunter becoming Happily Adopted by the Dalmatian family.
  • Fanon: Back when the only thing released of "A Summer to Remember" was the "Summer Sun" song, some fans theorized that the mysterious character that Dylan had the hots for was evil and/or working for Hunter in pursuits to help him out with capturing the other members of the Dalmatian family, but during her plan she would accidentally fall in love with Dylan and feel bad for betraying his trust. She was also given the placeholder name of Cynthia. This was based on the leaked storyboards that some people suspected was from this special, and was obviously jossed when the special aired as her name is Summer and she wasn't the evil character of the special at all.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Has one with Bluey due to both being centered around dogs as well as both shows airing on Disney branded channels.
  • Good Bad Translation:
    • Dylan and Dolly's parents, Doug and Delilah, were changed in the Brazilian Portuguese dub to Pongo and Perdita respectively. Yes, this isn't a joke. It brings up a lot of mixed implications that the translators obviously never considered.
    • In the Latin American dub of Poetry Scam, Dolly's initial rap scene went from innocent to cruel. She basically calls herself a nocturnal bitch due to a translation error since "la perra" is more commonly translated as a bitch rather than a female dog.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The scene in "The Longest Night" when Dawkins has his Princess Positron swiped away becomes much less funny after Cruella shreds it in the season 1 finale. Also, the scene in "Puppy Dreams" when Dawkins hugs his doll after having a supposed nightmare becomes a straight-up Tear Jerker.
    • The episodes between "London, We Have a Problem" and "Dante's Inferno" become a little tough to rewatch knowing that during that time Hunter is trapped in a metal box and losing his mind.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Large groups of background pups are usually depicted with a mix of full-bodied models and a vague blob of white speckled with black spots and puppy faces and tails. Once you notice it, it quickly brings to mind the Dogscape.
  • Ho Yay: Many fans started shipping Dylan and Hansel after Poetry Scam. In the episode, Dolly borrows Dylan's poems to impress her crush, Hansel and lying to him that she is the author. After Hansel finds out the truth, he asks Dylan to talk more about poems with him.
  • Incest Yay Shipping: Dylan/Dolly is an interesting case of this, since they're step-siblings and thus technically not related. Da Vinci/ D.J has also gotten some of this from fans due to them being the artists of the family.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Dante also qualifies, especially in "Dante's Inferno." He's a moody and nihilistic goth pup who can be a bit too giddy about the apocalypse for his own good. In Crushed Out, he makes Dylan smash his own moon rocks and in "Curse Of The Ferryhound," he gets involved in a cruel prank. However, he's also deeply sad that no one ever takes him seriously and most of the other pups treat him like a joke. There's also the fact that he's easily frightened and gets terrorized by Bessie in the summer special episode.
    • Hunter starts to become this in the final episodes of season 1, after months of isolation start to mess with his head and constantly being shouted down by his great aunt Cruella, leading to his Heel–Face Turn.
  • LGBT Fanbase: For starters, Roxy's owners were pretty much revealed to be a lesbian couple in Dal-Martians. Secondly, quite a few fans on Tumblr and Twitter have adapted the headcanon that Da Vinci is also a lesbian. Third, show creators have implied Hansel is this, commenting that while Dolly may have a crush on him, he actually has eyes for Dylan. Fourth, "The De Vil Wears Puppies" does feature a LGBTQ couple. Finally, the show is rather Popular with Furries and there's a very strong LGBT presence in the furry community.
  • Love to Hate: A lot of fans have praised this show's incarnation of Cruella de Vil, as it's one of the most despicably evil and frightening versions of the character to date.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Zombies 2: X Days To Go" has become a meme in some parts of the fandom, cause of the giant watermark about it on screen during the Season One climax episodes.
  • Moe: Pretty much all the pups are this to varying degrees but Deepak and Dorothy in particular stand out.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Bessie from "A Summer to Remember" crosses it when she attempts to kill the Dalmatians by pushing their bus off a cliff.
    • Cruella easily struts over the horizon several times once she arrives, but two examples especially stand out: Leaving Hunter trapped in the shipping container for six months, and planning on forcing Delilah and Doug to helplessly watch as she killed their children.
  • Never Live It Down: Dolly has trouble living down attacking Dylan and Roxy with a hose in "Perfect Match," to the point where even some of her fans consider it to be her biggest low. She also gets flack for putting Dylan through hell in episodes such as "Balancing Act" and "Poodlefall," even though she realized the error of her ways in both episodes and fixed her mistakes in the latter.
  • Popular with Furries: Most of the show's Periphery Demographic consists of furries or furry fans.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Big Fee gets a lot of disdain from fans for being arguably the least sympathetic member of the Canal Crew, due to her shameless Gasshole tendencies and greedy exploitation of Dolly in "Don't Push Your Luck."
    • The Canal Crew's other rodent, Sid Squirrel, got similar hate earlier on due to manipulating Dolly into helping him steal nuts in "May Contain Nuts." However, his hate began to die down once Big Fee was proven to be an even bigger jerk than him in "Don't Push Your Luck."
    • While Bessie, who comes from A Summer to Remember is meant to be hated, the fact that she gets away with attempting murder - combined with the fact that she isn't well written compared to Clarissa and Hunter - have made her near universally despised.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Triple-D were initially not as popular as the rest of the main pups, and were seen as being rather one-note, annoying and having too much unnecessary screen time. However, their individual personalities became much more defined as the series went on, culminating in "It's My Party," which was well received by the fanbase.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Da Vinci and DJ are a pretty popular pairing in fan works due to their love for art. Their only interaction was in a blink-and-you-will-miss-it scene where they listen to music together from the series finale.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The show is filled with an adorable cast of pups, most of which just scream Moe.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The premise being revealed to be about a different group of Dalmatians that happen to be very similar to the original except taking place in a setting that audiences will connect more easily to. A similar complaint was made towards DreamWorks Animation's Spirit: Riding Free.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: This was bound to happen, since obviously the show wouldn't be focusing on 101 unique Dalmatians at a time, but even then some are still disappointed that only 20 of the puppies (including the Dimitris) get to share the spotlight, while the rest are basically the same model of a young puppy copied and pasted with different collars and spots, especially since some of them have interesting names that could've made for good background puppies in the least like the Dimitris are (Debbie-May, Debbie-Lou, and Debbie-Lee for example).
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:
    • Dylan in The Wow of Miaow. While he doesn't do the best job at defending Deepak from the Dimitri Trio's bullying, it's still hard to watch him get blamed for everything, and even get punished by Deepak and Constantin for the crimes of their siblings. It also doesn't help that Deepak calls him out for insulting cats, when Constantin insulted dogs first, in the same scene, and in clear ear shot of both of them.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • Confirmed by one of the storyboard artists, Dizzy is a girl. Prior to this, many thought she was a boy, especially due to the similar head shape shared with the main boys of the family, and the lack of eyelashes when compared to her partner, Dee Dee.
    • Similarly, Da Vinci was believed to be a boy due to her being named after and based on a male artist. It wasn't until "Poetry Scam" (and further proof by another storyboard artist) that it was revealed that she's a girl.note
    • There was also a bit of confusion about what gender Dante was before yet another artist confirmed it. However this time it was easy to tell after clips of him were released due to his voice, unlike the above two examples.
    • Ignoring the name, Hugo was thought by some to be a woman while he's actually a man. He never talks much in the show and most of the owners are based on their pets, in this case being Clarissa, so it was fairly easy to make the mistake.
  • Wangst: Bessie's reason for trying to kill the Dalmatian family in "A Summer to Remember" all happened because they threw their toys in her face on accident. Granted, Dylan being racist to country people was pretty rude, but even mixing those two together, does that really sound like a good reason to kill anyone?
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The Season One climax, "The De Vil Wears Puppies," has Cruella return, seeking out her puppy fur coat again. It shows that Cruella is very abusive in her relationship to Hunter in order to get him to do her bidding. What makes it especially dark is that 1) she has a skinning machine which she intended to throw the puppies in, 2) she uses Dawkins' doll to demonstrate to the puppies what it will do to them, 3) she tells Delilah and Doug that she is going to force them to watch her do this before turning them into matching luggage. It is a relief that the Dalmatians, the other animals and Hunter are able to stop Cruella's plans before any Dalmatian could be harmed.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Previews of the show at the Annecy film festival and the Bridging the Gap Animation Lab event were highly praised. The animation and design updates were much more well received, too.
  • The Woobie:
    • Deepak is often seen as this by fans, given that no matter how much he tries to find his inner peace, there's always something scaring or disturbing him. The scene where he breaks down in tears in "The Wow of Miaow" after Dylan hurts his feelings pretty much cements his status as one of the most sympathetic characters in the show.
    • Da Vinci became one in her focus episode, where her artistic skills get taken advantage of by everyone for profit, which causes her to have a major anxiety attack.
    • Dorothy also counts, as she is not only the canine equivalent of a toddler, but also a Cheerful Child who has been through several stints of bad luck. In particular, she's almost run over by a snowplow in "Snow Day," bullied by Dizzy and Dee Dee to the point of making her cry in "My Fair Dolly," and captured by Hunter twice in "London, We Have a Problem."
    • Dawkins was shaping up to be this in "Fetch" and his status as this is officially cemented as of "Dawkins Strikes Back." In the former episode, he expresses feelings of loneliness and in the latter, he gets so overworked that it causes a toll on his mental health, making him unable to relax. The cherry on top of Dawkins' woobie-cake is the fact that he watches Princess Positron get shredded in the season 1 finale and if you look closely in the scene where Hunter pleads with Cruella not to kill the puppies, you can see him staring with a blank expression as tears fall from his eyes.
    • Hunter becomes this in the season one climax, with it revealing that Cruella is very abusive towards him, and that he is only doing what Cruella is telling him to so that he can be accepted by and belong to someone.
