YMMV / My Little Pony: The Movie (1986)

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: More than a few people have noted that the sail on the witches' ship during scenes where they’re riding on the Smooze looks a little too much like a pair of boobs.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Some fans believe Draggle suffers from a type of learning disability and is a jarring example of how developmentally disabled children can be abused in less loving households.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Hydia briefly mentions a rival witch, Malevia at Nightmare Heights whose daughter somehow made Easter Sunday come up on a Tuesday, whose modus operandi isn't too dissimilar from canon threats the ponies would face as well as a potential Evil Versus Evil scenario.
  • Fridge Horror: What exactly happened to Grundleland, considering that there is only the total of five grundles left, including one female and no children?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: See here.
  • Informed Wrongness: The ponies are meant to be seen as jerks for berating Baby Lickety Split, but she had deliberately screwed up the dance performance that they had worked really hard on, so it's understandable why they'd be upset with her. It doesn't help that they had even felt they were too hard on her after learning that she had run away.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Based on its popularity, its clear that most fans watch the movie just to see the Smooze in action.
  • Memetic Mutation: The Smooze has gone memetic as a result of the "Gak" meme that came up after loads of ads for Gak aired during the premiere of the third season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
  • Squick: Most of the scenes involving the witches, especially Reeka.
The Cinema Snob: Why is this movie so gross?
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Reeka and Draggle. Sure they're evil, but they have a seriously abusive mother and genuinely sympathetic qualities.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: We’re supposed to feel bad for Baby Lickety-Split when she runs away after being scolded for ruining the ponies’ dance number. The thing is, if she had just cooperated with the others and not tried to make up her own dance, she wouldn't have gotten scolded in the first place. It doesn’t help that she neither apologizes nor owns up to her mistake either.
