YMMV / Murdered: Soul Suspect

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Face it, the background music is incredibly haunting, and absolutely perfect for the setting.
  • Complete Monster: Abigail Williams, the real Big Bad, defines hypocrisy in its cruellest, nastiest nature. During the Salem Witch Trials, her vendetta against witches motivates her to falsely report multiple women as witches leading to their execution. Abigail swears vengeance on all “Witches” that set foot in Salem and blames witches for her execution. Thereafter, as the Bell Killer, Abigail uses witchcraft to possess people into murdering young women through the same methods Salemites used to execute witches. This is demonstrated when she possesses Rex Reyes into shooting Ronan to death after the latter is brainwashed into killing Sophia.
  • Demonic Spiders: Almost literally. Demons are much harder than the investigations, with an upward of four at once, and their erratic movement makes finding out when they can or can't see you difficult for some.
  • Game-Breaking Bug: Just by having the PS4 version installed to your hard drive, your console can repeatedly crash and need to be restarted.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: One of the main problems people have with the game is its length - it can be completed in about ten hours. And it's very, very easy. The only challenge is to exorcise the demons and even then, it's a very lax quicktime event. Dying sets you back a minute or so as you are instantly returned. Not to mention finding clues is a matter of walking towards the light and collecting the evidence. Figuring out the right evidence just amounts to a guessing game. Not only are there no repercussions for getting it wrong, there's no reward for getting it right on your first try either.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Over the course of one night, Ronan solves the entire Bell Killer case as a ghost.
    • In the climax, when Abigail Williams tries to open a portal to hell right under Ronan's feet, he tries to pull a Taking You With Me on her. It only gets better from there. In the process of doing so, he somehow manages to switch places with her, managing to send Abigail presumably to the depths of Hell while he manages to get away.
  • Obvious Judas: If you're even slightly familiar with the famous play The Crucible, or know anything about the Salem Witch Trials, you should know right from the very beginning not to trust Abigail Williams.
  • Questionable Casting: Downplayed. There are a lot of oddities with random NPCs, such as how the lines for their internal thoughts often have noticeably different voice actors from when they're actually speaking, or how old ladies sound like 20 year-olds.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The gameplay ranges from "functional" to "vaguely enjoyable", but isn't exactly very challenging or deep. Likewise, the narrative is a fairly competent and entertaining murder mystery, but nowhere near strong enough for Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game territory.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Most of the faces in the game are fairly well done, but somebody in the graphics department went wrong with Abigail, who seems to have a child's face with an old person's aging lines, which looks really weird.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Downplayed. There are a lot of oddities with random NPCs, such as how ghosts from over a hundred years ago are sometimes wearing modern clothing.
