YMMV / Mr. Men

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: It's popular among some to psychoanalyse the characters and conclude that Mr. Bump is a masochist, Mr. Strong is a Straw Nihilist, Mr. Tickle has a tickling fetish, Mr. Happy is a Stepford Smiler (he actually is one in The Mr. Men Show), etc.
  • Awesome Music: The 1983 series Little Miss/Mr. Men and Little Misses has some notably catchy and decent songs. Such as the intro/outro called "All Friends Together" which is fast-paced and performed by a banjoo and 80s synthesizers. However, some Little Miss episodes has some unique character themes.:
    • "Absolutely, Totally, Scatterbrain" which is about Little Miss Scatterbrain's well... scatterbrain nature. Such as guessing which house is her own house.
    • Little Miss Neat's character theme has a frantic and busy tone fitting the character's constant urge to make everything neat and tidy at her home.
    • While Little Miss Bossy doesn't have her own theme, the song that plays when The Bossy Boots forces her to walk is fast-paced, energetic, and chaotic. A short reprise of the theme is heard after she learns her lessons near the end of the episode.
    • The 1992 direct-to-video exclusive "Mr. Men: The Great Alphabet Hunt" has an upbeat and relaxing theme about the Letters of the Alphabet.
  • Bizarro Episode: Mr. Snow. He isn't defined or named by any character or personality trait, he's a snowman instead of a Living Polyhedron, his story's holiday-themed instead of being a look into his everyday life, and he never appears in any of the other characters' stories... nor do any of them ever appear in his.
  • Can't Un-Hear It: It's very difficult to read a Mr. Men or Little Miss story and not imagine either Arthur Lowe or John Alderton narrating it.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Mr. Bump and Mr. Tickle beating up Little Miss Trouble after she tricked Mr. Uppity and Mr. Clever into attacking Mr. Small and laughed at the result is a huge breath of fresh air.
    • In light of Little Miss Naughty's actions in "Little Miss Shy And The Fairy Godmother", her being forced to scrub the plates as punishment for attempting to ruin a street party at the end of "Little Miss Princess And The Very Special Party" might come off as extremely well-deserved.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Little Miss Trouble. Given her Lack of Empathy, tendency to spread lies and her getting jollies out of watching people get hurt, it could be stated that she's a sociopath but it has not been officially confirmed.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • The fact that the Nonsenselanders apparently keep their doors open to prevent burglars from coming in. Suppose a burglar that's not a Nonsenseland native came round?
    • One regarding Mr. Men Go Dancing, what are the chances that Mr. Fussy, Mr. Cheerful, Little Miss Sunshine and Little Miss Splendid (Who were the judges at the dance contest) were unfairly blamed by the press for what happened to Mr. Perfect and Little Miss Star when it was really Mr. Mischief and Little Miss Naughty who ruined their turn on the dance floor?
    • Mr. Impossible is by far one of the most powerful characters in the series — he can do anything even if it's impossible. This does not seem to have any limits making him a potential Reality Warper, and his abilities could theoretically include horrible things like blowing up the world with a snap of his fingersnote . Fortunately, he's one of the nicest Mr. Men and wouldn't do such terrible acts, but one can only imagine what could happen if he had the disposition of Mr. Grumpy, Mr. Mean, or worse...
    • Similar to Mr. Impossible above, you have Little Miss Lucky - She would, as likely as not, literally get away with murder if she had a mindset similar to Mr. Mischief and Little Miss Naughty, which luckily (No pun intended) she doesn't.
    • The books Mr. Men Go To School and Mr. Men Hospital show Little Miss Bossy as the headteacher and the matron respectively and Mr. Mischief and Little Miss Naughty are shown as working under her in the latter book and Little Miss Naughty is shown as a student in the former book. While Mr. Mischief and Little Miss Naughty are both troublemakers, there's a very likely chance that having to deal with Little Miss Bossy's bossiness may have excacerbated their bad behavior instead of making it better.
    • One from Little Miss Inventor And The Robots: What are the chances that the Bossybot taking control of the other robots that Little Miss Inventor built and causing them to spiral out of control may have resulted in a Terminator-esque or Nineteen Eighty-Four-esque scenario had Little Miss Inventor not created a stop button?
      • Take into account the bullet points regarding Mr. Impossible and Little Miss Lucky. The citizens of Misterland are very lucky that Little Miss Inventor didn't create robotic clones of them or who knows what they would've done when the Bossybot took control of the other robots.
    • Considering that cats eat mice and Little Miss Magic turned the Witch from Little Miss Sunshine And The Wicked Witch into a cat at the end of the story, there's a high chance that the witch-turned cat probably would've eaten Little Miss Dotty (Who had been turned into a mouse) had Little Miss Magic not turned her back to normal.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • The series often goes along with The Railway Series due to both being British franchises starting out as something made from the author for their kids to enjoy filled with colorful characters. The fact that both franchises have shows that were adapted with some of the same sharing cast members also helped out.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • So popular in France that in the 90s, an extra eleven ghost-written entries in the series under the name Roger Hargreaves were made specifically for the country and are now part of the official French canon! (although Little Miss Prim and Little Miss Show-Off were later removed from the lineup)
    • The franchise enjoys a lot of popularity in Greece too; the aforementioned French stories were released there, as well as "The Mr. Men Songs", the Greek versions of which were met with a big success and led to the founding of bands such as "Zouzounia" and "Kimon & his Gang".
  • Growing the Beard: Early on, the Mr. Men characters started to interact with each other in the book, "Mr. Grumpy". The series began to crystallize with the introduction of the Little Misses in the 1980s. Soon after, it became commonplace for the Mr. Men and Little Misses to meet new faces and/or interact with each other.
  • Memetic Badass: Mr. Crosspatch, the French/Greece-exclusive character, who will beat anybody up for anything short of bumping into him.
  • Moe: Little Miss Tiny's very adorable given that she's the Token Mini-Moe.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • Mr. Forgetful's and Mr. Snooty's songs on the tapes narrated by Douglas Blackwell both have beats very similar to Best Years Of Our Lives by Modern Romance.
    • Mr. Bounce's song is similar to Grand Old Duke Of York.
    • Mr. Bump's song has similarties to If You're Happy And You Know It.
    • Mr. Snow's song resembles "Horray, Horray, It's a Holi-Holiday By Boney M.. note
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: A lot of fans aren't happy about Mr. Uppity's seemingly out of nowhere and unnecessary name change, some even out right refusing to call him Snooty.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Considering the amount of characters who are Foils to each other (E.G. Mr. Grumpy to Mr. Happy and Little Miss Sunshine), you'd think that there'd be a story showing Little Miss Inventor and Little Miss Magic having such a relationship but so far, such a storyline hasn't come to light.
  • Unexpected Character: Cybermats in Dr. Twelfth, which factor into The Reveal.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: While whether they're supposed to be sympathized with or not is debatable, Mr. Quiet and Little Miss Shy can be see as this in Little Miss Sunshine On A Rainy Day where the narrative attempts to paint them as poor company due to them giving Little Miss Sunshine an awkward silence when the latter invites them round for tea. The problem with this is the fact that they were both established from their respective introductions to both be extremely shy so their reaction to being in company would seem understandable. It also comes off as a Temporarily Exaggerated Trait considering that Mr. Quiet and Little Miss Shy have been shown in a number of books and episodes in both the 90s cartoon and the 2008 cartoon to be legitimately nice people whom if given a fair amount of prompting would drop their shyness to help out others in need or take part in special occassions.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Mr. Sneeze having visible sclera would be a little less off-putting if he weren't the only character in the franchise with them. And that doesn't even get into the fact he has no arms.
  • Values Dissonance: The word "uppity" has a racist history, so, most likely in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, Mr. Uppity's name was changed to Mr. Snooty in all territories, making him the second character to undergo a name change in all territories after Little Miss Greedy.
    • Even Little Miss Greedy's name was changed after the word "plump" was deemed offensive in the UK in The '80s.
  • The Woobie: Mr. Bump and Little Miss Whoops are always clumsy and accidentally hurting themselves, Mr. Forgetful forgets everything and anything, Mr. Muddle is always mixed up about everything, Mr. Clumsy breaks stuff simply by touching it and is always tripping up, Mr. Quiet is unable to raise his voice very much resulting in people not being able to hear him, Little Miss Shy is shy to the point where she spends most of the day in her own house, Mr. Jelly is scared of his own shadow, Little Miss Late is late for everything and often gets yelled at even when she doesn't mean to be late, Mr. Clever is only clever when it comes to intellectual areas and is stupid when it comes to emotional areas and Mr. Small and Miss Tiny have problems that are caused by their height.
    • Mr. Small in "Little Miss Trouble".
    • Mr. Good is also one in his own story due to having his generous nature spat in his face by the residents of Badland. Fortunately he manages to leave by the end of the book.
    • Mr. Tickle can come off as one in the New Library "Mr. Tickle In A Tangle." His extraordinary long arms prove to be nothing but a nuisance due to getting them tangled in the stair banisters and the revolving door at a hotel where he was meant to meet up with Mr. Uppity for lunch, getting stepped on by a bus conductor and getting tangled up by Little Miss Naughty.
