YMMV / Kill Six Billion Demons

Go To

  • Archive Binge: The author recommends this. From the "About" page:
This is a webcomic! It’s graphic novel style, meaning it’s meant to be read in large chunks, but you can subject yourself to the agony of reading it a couple pages a week!
  • Awesome Art: Very awesome. The sheer scale of the story's events would be awe-worthy enough, but the author also has an incredible eye for detail. The comic is occasionally called an over-the-top, otherworldly Where's Waldo, considering how many dozens of unique and strange characters can be on-page at times.
  • Broken Base:
    • Zoss revealing that true strength in the KSBD universe cannot be attained by gathering power for and holding it to yourself, but by being willing to pass that power onto others alongside you ("strength beyond [your own] strength" and "a terrible fire, that grows as it passes to others"). This revelation immediately split the fandom into opposing factions.
      • One side claimed that the comic is throwing aside its unique in-universe philosophy of ignorance and want for power, and replacing it with a trite "friendship was the real strength all along" message, and that the replacement is infinitely more boring in comparison. They point to the fact that the only way so far that Allison has managed to access her power is by using it to destroy the current status quo and "cut herself into greater shapes" using Royalty.
      • Meanwhile, the other side is saying that the self-interested pursuit of power has always been shown in the negative, from the Seven Rulers of Heaven - for all their power - being trapped in prisons of their own making, to the fact that self-admitted liar YISUN's scriptures exalting self-interest could mean that the opposite is true, or could be taken as an Anti-Nihilist message to construct meaning where there is none. There's even in-universe scripture to support it. Meti insults all followers of Sword Law and the smaller-minded wielders of Royalty as idiots, using their divine power for nothing but destruction. And they point out that the in-universe philosophy still hasn't abandoned its core "upturn the status quo" and "cut yourself into stronger shapes" messages, just that the method has been revealed to be different.
    • Also in response to the revelation that the Kill Six Billion Demons universe is entirely deterministic, with free will being an illusion and absolutely no way to change or deviate from this in any way; many fans refused to accept this even after the author established it repeatedly in the comic and then stated it unambiguously via Word of God on twitter.
    • Is Solomon David an Anti-Villain or Anti-Hero? Of all the demiurges, he's the only one who seems to genuinely care about making lives easier for the common folk, in spite of Felony Misdemeanor being in full effect throughout The Celestial Empire. Mottom mocks him for thinking he's The Hero. White Chain reminds Allison that they all became demiurges by committing an untold amount of atrocities. Every time he's part of the story, comments are divided between those who admire his Well-Intentioned Extremist aspect and those who decry his Tautological Templar aspect.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • INGSVLD, the Pursuer with a book for a head, due to his strange yet memorable design.
    • Likewise, Hrotomos (another Pursuer, and usually referred to as "giant baby" or "murder baby") has something of a following, mostly just due to the fact he's a gigantic baby.
    • Mammon is probably the most liked of the Seven due to his unique design (since he’s the only non-human among them), as well as his tragic backstory and personality.
    • During the heist of Yre, Cat Master became an unanimous fan favorite due to his silent and (for a devil) honest nature, as well as his affinity for cute cats.
    • 10 Vigilant Gaze, the hammy and slightly loopy angel who sits guard outside Koss's Workshop. Mainly for being one of the few angels who actually acts like one and shows support for White Chain. Their grand return in the Tournament Arc to remind White Chain of her oath and help out the Yamga crew only made him even more popular. Unambiguously validating White Chain's identity as a woman raised the awesome to even greater heights.
  • Evil Is Cool:
    • Oscar is a laidback gangster who wears pants with the word "evil" all over them. His favorite jacket says "Bad Man" on it, and even though he antagonizes Cio whenever he sees her, he has made the conscious decision at least once to merely mock her, as opposed to getting into a fight. In a word, he's just... cool.
    • Most of the Seven have their cool moments, whether that's a huge dragon spitting fire on top of a mountain of gold or a worm-woman splitting into several bodies in order to be all of the commentators to a live event.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Allison is often known by Alice-UN, Al-YISUN, Al-YIS-UN, or All-YIS-UN due to the implications of Zoss mistaking her name for "Alice".
    • Once Mammon was introduced properly in the comic and seen to be quite different than he was built up to be, many people in the comments section began referring to him as Grandpa Dragon or Grandpa Mammon due to his doddering mannerisms and elderly behavior.
    • "Salami Dave" and other incorrect variations of his name for Solomon David.
    • The Machine that Jadis uses to view all of causality (and which she tosses Allison into in order to break her) is called the Total Perspective Vortex by fans, in reference to a similar machine from The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
  • Fountain of Memes: Virtually any new meme will invariably end up primarily featuring Solomon David.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Fans of the tabletop RPG Exalted have embraced K6BD as the closest representation of that game's themes, aesthetics, and power levels.
  • Growing the Beard: Book 2, where the art is noticeably improved on Allison, she takes initiative in the plot, and Throne is established enough for a story to truly begin.
  • I Knew It!: The mysterious one-eyed angel who pursues White Chain in the Tournament Arc is Vigilant Gaze. Lampshaded in the Alt Text for the page: "Pretty sure you know who this is by this point."
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Mammon caused great suffering and destroyed his own family in his quest to attain his riches... then proceeded to go senile and completely forget it all. Now he's just a sad old man, wandering about his vault and counting the money, trying to remember why it was important to him. Especially bad because age seems to have made him a better person, but he can't make amends for all the things he's done because he doesn't even remember doing most of them and the ones he does remember were too evil to ever fix.
    • Solomon David is an arrogant, egotistical tyrant who forces his Celestial Empire to center entirely around him, and will slaughter countless individuals without hesitation just to cement his power and authority. Before all this, however, he was a humble Rayuban who lost his entire family in the Universal War, made worse by the fact that the one group of people who had any power to save his loved ones refused to intervene. Even as a God-Emperor and one of the seven undisputed rulers of all Creation, its clear that the scars of his past still cut deep, evident in how he sets himself as the sole layer of bedrock upon which his empire lives and grows. Everything he worked for comes to naught when Jagganoth devastates his world, and Solomon's people slowly realize that their god is not as infallible as he made himself to be.
  • LGBT Fanbase: A pretty active one which has engaged with Abaddon with helpful feedback to avoid some of the negative stereotypes in writing LGBT characters.
  • Love to Hate: Oscar. He may be a callous, backstabbing, lying, possessive murderer and thief who ends up trying to murder the heroes, but the readers love him anyways, some expressly because he’s such a prick that it’s actually kinda entertaining.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Salami Dave note
    • Women want me, Fish fear me note
    • Jaggahog note
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The first book and a half or so have a lot of exposition as White Chain and later Cio explain to Allison the nature of the multiverse and its various factions and rules, with relatively little plot progression. By the time Allison decides to go to Mottom's palace, she knows enough to be able to spend more time doing instead of listening, and the plot picks up steam quickly.
  • Stoic Woobie: White Chain, especially after they get banished.
