YMMV / Justice Society: World War II

Go To

  • Complete Monster: The Advisor, this universe's Psycho-Pirate, is Aquaman's Evil Chancellor who allied himself with the Nazis. Once a pirate who was rescued by the Atlanteans after his ship sunk, the Advisor thanked them by brainwashing Aquaman, using him to give Atlantean weapons to the Nazis to assist in their world domination scheme, hoping to betray them once they achieve their goal. After luring the Justice Society into a trap in Atlantis, the Advisor sends Aquaman and his Atlantean army to wreak havoc on American soil, hoping to destroy the entire country to make it easier for the Nazis to conquer. Smugly killing Steve Trevor after Aquaman breaks his control and retreats, the Advisor also reveals to have called in some planes to bomb the entire country should Aquaman fail.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • As soon as the premise was announced, it was immediately theorized that Flash would be traveling back from the ending of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, especially since it also appeared that this film would be the beginning of another DC Animated Movie Universe-esque Shared Universe with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and Batman: The Long Halloween. The film itself jossed this theory, but it did confirm it was part of a new shared universe.
    • One theory is that the prisoner who gave the Earth-2 Superman his costume is Kamandi from the DC Showcase short of the same name that was included in the bonus features of Justice Society: World War II. This is supported by his physical similarities to Kamandi, his comments implying that he's from the future, having acquired the Superman suit in his own short, and recognizing Superman on sight. This was eventually confirmed to be true in 2022 by Jeremy Adams.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The "Picnic Dates" clip shows Barry and Iris going on a picnic date because Iris wants him to step away from superheroing and living life fast for a while, only for Barry to keep using his powers and their date being interrupted by an emergency, forcing Iris to let him go. This is exactly what happened with Red Rush and his girlfriend in the first episode of Invincible (2021), which was released over a month before the film came out, though Barry's story is a lot more fortunate…
  • Memetic Mutation: With the reveal that the mustached WWII reporter, Shakespeare, is Justice Society's version of Clark Kent who eventually became Superman, many viewers joke that this version is inspired by the botched CGI attempt to remove Henry Cavill's mustache during the reshoots of Justice League (2017). It's even more hilarious Flash comments, "You've shaved." after seeing Superman in action.
  • Narm Charm: Aquaman saying "Heil Hitler" and doing the Nazi salute is meant as a Wham Line and Wham Shot revealing that he's been brainwashed, but is a bit offputting for how suddenly absurd it sounds. Not helped that Aquaman is infamous for his dickish and silly portrayals across DC media, and even his voice actor thought it was unthinkable yet hilarious. Of course, it is meant to be an Out-of-Character Alert and everything about it is played seriously.
  • Older Than They Think: Aquaman unwillingly affiliated with the Nazis? In The Multiversity, on Earth 10 — the universe where Superman was found by Nazi Germany and became Overman, Aquaman (or rather, Underwaterman) was forced to ally Atlantis with the Nazis to protect his people and otherwise believes that the only reason that offer was extended was because the Nazis believe Atlantis is the origin of the Aryan race.
  • Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading: An example where the writer and others involved in making the film realises this. Meghan Fitzmartin admitted in the Blu-Ray special features that while writing the relationship between Hawkman and Black Canary, she had intended for them to be Like Brother and Sister. However, while watching the film, she began to see romantic undertones in their dynamic which some reviews also noticed, and while jokingly complaining that she didn't mean to ship the characters it does add to the tragedy. The director personally feels that Canary has stronger feelings for Hawkman that he does for her.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The movie's creators said that they deliberately kept the cast small to avoid having too many characters to properly develop, and fans agree that this is a logical argument. Still, it can be disappointing how Justice Society members and associates who are heavily associated with World War II like the Sandman, Mr. America, Commander Steel, etc., are neither seen nor mentioned.
  • Unexpected Character: Superman and Brainiac, who weren't listed in any promotional material at all. Much less Superman: Man of Tomorrow's Superman played by Darren Criss, as it also wasn't expected that there would be any indications of a new Shared Universe or even a Justice League so soon after the conclusion of the DC Animated Movie Universe.
