YMMV / Human Resources (2022)

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: How much of Claudia's mental instability was caused by exposure to the monster world and how much was pre-existing mental illness? Sonya does say that being with a monster can mess with a human's mind, and Claudia only starts showing serious mania and depression after getting with Sonya. However, Sonya suggests that Claudia was already "sick" and that's why she was able to see Sonya and her light, though it's never outright confirmed. While her relationship with Sonya made her worse, it's unclear just how much it affected her, as opposed to triggering symptoms Claudia already had. One thing is certain, it appears that she can no longer see Sonya in the end.
  • Catharsis Factor: In the first episode of Season 2, when Dante finally pushes Pete too far by shoving Rochelle, the Logic Rock snaps and uppercuts the Addiction Angel into the air. It’s quite a satisfying moment for anyone sick of Dante’s toxic behaviour.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • "Rutgers is for Lovers" has Emmy casually mention having gotten three abortions, and confuse Pete's "Inbox Zero" organization method with the name of her abortion clinic. Because Emmy is so shameless, the exchange leads to further plays on the name of the clinic (such as Pete remarking "A clean box is a happy box" and realizing they probably say the same thing at her clinic) and ends with Emmy preparing to vent about her abortions to Pete because her therapist "ghosted" her.
    • When Rochelle and Nadja are mourning their breakup at the end of "Rudgers is for Lovers" Petra makes a joke about Nadja meeting and dating a white woman with drealocks, to which Rochelle responds "Ugh, I hope not." Later in the season Nadja presumably goes to college, as her grandmother Yara is shown to be staying in her bedroom. The entire sequence at the end of "It's Almost Over" is devastating, one of the saddest, sweetest episodes in the entire canon. But during the montage of all of Yara's family coming to say goodbye is a heartbroken Nadja sobbing by her bedside... with a white woman with dreadlocks standing pensively at the door.
    • As sad it is to see Paul struggle to live life after the death of his wife, Lionel and Montel are ridiculously over-the-top at shaming him for "forgetting" her. The peak is when Lionel guilts Paul on a date by having Montel dress as a skeleton and pretend to be Evelyn, disapproving of Paul's actions.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Claudia is implied to be mentally ill, but it's unclear what exactly is the matter. Sonya seeing her have an existential anxious breakdown about the world is what convinces Sonya to call off the relationship. While exposing Claudia to the secrets of the universe triggered Claudia's spiral, Sonya wonders if Claudia only saw Sonya's light in the first place because she was "sick." Claudia stops being able to see Sonya after Claudia gets help from her sister.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Cat Stevens, one of the few Depression Kitties shown in both this series and Big Mouth, only appeared in one episode in the first season, but was instantly beloved for genuinely caring about his clients' wellbeing unlike Kitty and being one of the nicest monsters, and playing a key role in helping Emmy grow fond of Barry and understand why he and Becca love each other, ultimately succeeding in saving their marriage.
  • Estrogen Brigade: Pete's surprisingly ripped figure combined with his kind and helpful personality gained the Logic Rock a lot of fans. It's no wonder season two gave him multiple more shirtless scenes.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • It's almost unanimous that fans want to see Emmy get together with Cat Stevens due to their quick but sweet friendship, the undeniable chemistry they shared and the fact that Cat was nothing but kind to Emmy, as well as the fact that Emmy herself grew to like Cat before she was interrupted by Dante.
    • General consensus among fans is that Rochelle and Dante should break up in season two to make way for fan preferred couple Rochelle and Pete. Fortunately, Dante dumped Rochelle in the very first episode of season two, and the rest of the season deals with a Rochelle and Pete plot... albeit not in a perfectly happy way.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In "Birth," after a depressing forty millionth birthday, Maury returns home to a surprise party his dicks threw for him, and he realizes that he does have some love in his life.
    • In "Rutgers is for Lovers," Connie pauses her Kinky Role-Playing with Maury to take a drunk Sonia home, much to Maury's disappointment. She decides to stay the night to watch over Sonia, and tells Maury that they can't have sex. Before she can even tell him this, however, she finds a gift basket full of goodies and a note from Maury (still in character) saying that Connie can have the night to herself and they can get back to business tomorrow. Then it becomes funny when Maury jerks off to Connie's equally heartfelt response.
      • Grim but sweet is Connie instantly thinking Sonja has killed someone, and is immediately willing to help her hide the body.
    • "Love in the Time of Postpartum":
      • Cat takes Emmy on a journey through Barry's memories to show their emotional connection. Becca met Barry in college and snapped Barry out of his depression, and when Becca's dad doesn't come to the wedding, Barry walks her down the aisle instead.
      • Barry helps Becca cope with her postpartum depression by bringing her Taco Bell and venting about his own experiences with depression, and how his love for Becca helped him get through those tough times. This finally gets Emmy to glow for Barry. The episode ends with them "at sea" together, with Barry promising to stick by Becca until she feels better.
    • In "The Addiction Angel", Lionel helps Emmy out with her addiction to Dante's angel dust.
    • In "International Creature Convention", Connie and Maury realize they've never said "I love you" to each other. They go to a hotel room and take a special time to say it to each other. However, when the emotional intimacy makes their sex life weird, they decide the best way to love each other is to act like they hate each other. At the end of the episode, Maury stares lovingly at Connie on the plane and tells her, "I'm just thinking about how I'm really, really, not in love with you."
    • "It's Almost Over": Amir, Walter, and Pete finally accept that Yara is dying and share a good cry. Not only does Yara get to tell Amir that she loved spending the day with Natalie when she snuck her out of the house, but after she dies, Walter becomes Natalie's Lovebug to help her through her grief, and Yara gets to meet both of her lovers in the afterlife. It's even implied that they want a three-way relationship with her (which she's game).
    • The start of Season 2 has a slideshow of the good times Maury and Connie had with their child, Montel.
    • In "Pity Party," Petra gets assigned to a neurodivergent four-year-old named Sal, whose main issue is getting his parents to buy him a toy truck. Initially reluctant to focus on such small endeavors, Petra grows close to Sal and gets really invested in getting him that truck. She even calls in Hope because she's so dedicated to making Sal happy, which pays off as Sal learns to communicate what he wants to his parents. Petra even joins him in playing with the truck.
  • Informed Wrongness: After Rochelle, Emmy's best friend, sleeps with her on-and-off friend with benefits Dante the Addiction Angel and even starts a relationship with him, Emmy does have a right to be angry since she had feelings for him that Rochelle knew about. However, Emmy is consistently regarded as a jealous brat even though she is a genuine victim of Dante's given how he used her low self-esteem to satisfy his own desires while bleeding her dry when she's clearly emotionally vulnerable. To make matters worse, she gets little to no support from anyone genuinely helpful save for The Shame Wizard, who helps her for the sake of indulging in her shame and putting her down even more, and the show seems to act as if Emmy deserves the mistreatment and harsh criticisms. Then Rochelle never receives any other backlash from anybody for her actions and her reputation even gets better while Emmy's gets worse.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: General Malice from the second season is beloved by the fandom for her lizard-appearance and being a passable example of Evil Is Cool. Dante the Addiction Angel is hated by the fandom for his jerkass tendencies, alongside being a toxic boyfriend for both Emmy and Rochelle as well as planting a seed of chaos that causes a rift of their friendship.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Dante's severed zombie penis, while silly in concept, looks disgustingly creepy. It has teeth around its urethra and is visibly cut up, and attacks Pete by violating him orally and anally.
    • The Hate Division squashes a cold epidemic by killing the infected. Specifically, they have a giant masked goon in a party hat named Anthony Piñata squeeze the infected until their eyes bug out and head explodes. When Anthony himself gets infected, he squeezes his own head in horror... and unlike the gremlin he killed, his blood is not colored Alien Blood, but real red blood.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The main opinion of the show is that while nowhere near as popular as Big Mouth, it is a generally passable series at best.
  • Squick: Pete cutting off Dante's penis was nasty enough in the season one finale, but it comes back as a toothed zombie in season two, constantly attacking Pete and even penetrating his mouth and asshole. Pete has to squish it and chop it several times, and it's always oozing cum and green goo. Pete even lampshades how disgusting and uncomfortable it is for the viewers to watch.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Cat Stevens only has a major role in "Love in the Time of Postpartum," but he serves as a great chill Foil to Kitty (showing a Depression Kitty can be a decent creature) and has a positive effect on Emmy that almost turns romantic. Unfortunately he only shows up for a few cameos in Season 2, and doesn't interact with Emmy.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: At the end of "It's Almost Over," Walter becomes Natalie's Lovebug, something that interested many fans who wanted to see the family's plot continue, as well as give Natalie more screentime and explore what love is like for a young trans teen. Unfortunately, Natalie and her family are absent from season two, and Walter has subplots with totally new clients.
